Best Restaurants in Waco, Texas | Eater Dallas

"A Waco institution since 1975, Schmaltz’s has always kept its sandwiches the same. The bread at this no-frills spot is baked in-house, and then piled high with pastrami, salami, corned beef, or deli meats. Its second location in Valley Mills serves the same reliable handhelds. Both are counter service with a lunch-spot feeling — nothing to write home about in the design, leaving diners to focus on the excellence of the sandwiches." - Amy McCarthy

Where to Eat on the Road in Between Dallas and Austin

"Pop in for some freshly baked bread, which is made by hand daily. The muffulettas here are legendary. Try the one named after the house with ham and salami plus mozzarella and cheddar. Or go for a classic pastrami — or a veggie sammie." - Courtney E. Smith, Amy McCarthy

During lunch it was quite busy but there were a few open tables. Their sandwiches come toasted fresh from the oven and are flavorful, but they skimp on the deli meat. For $10+ a sandwich, it seemed a little expensive.

Schmaltz's has delicious sandwiches that are not too filling and come on warm, crunchy buns. We enjoyed both the turkey and the cheese sandwich. Despite a lunchtime line the orders moved fairly quickly and there always seemed to be a table open. The shop is in the middle of downtown and I'm ready walking distance of desert or coffee afterwards.

The smell of fresh bread lets you know your appetite is in good hands here. Pride in their product shows from start to finish. If you have any questions, the helpful counter people cheerfully answer them and make spot on recommendations. You can't go wrong with their signature sandwich and a bag of chips or slaw, if you prefer. They do a booming take away business, and it's interesting to watch all the people come and go. Be a little patient; your freshly make sandwich will come and it will be worth the wait. All the locals go here.

A neat old school sandwich shop. It gets busy, but the food comes out quickly. I had the roast beef. It was good. The bread was interesting. Apparently, it's all made on site and reminded me a little of sourdough.

Loved this local sandwich shop with some history! Sandwiches were delish, served warm with homemade bread, garlic butter, and melted cheese. A must try!

Nom nom nom nom was all I could think while I gobbled the Pastrami on a lightly crispy sesame seed bun. If they had a never ending sandwich that would be the end of me. Thankfully, it does not because I truly wouldn't want to gain unlimited weight. Just the 1 - 2 lbs will do but the heel kick of flavor made me smile with yum. Keep rocking those delicious smamiches.

This is such a cool, friendly sandwich place - just a couple of blocks from the Dr Pepper Museum. The perfect place for a filling lunch after visiting the museum. Their namesake sandwich - the Schmaltz sandwich - sounds absolutely delicious but I didn’t try it (not a ham eater). Instead I had their veggie sandwich on the jalapeño cheese bread. Really good! Others on my table had the chef’s salad and other sandwiches - all were delicious And the folks behind the counter are friendly and patient if you have any questions. Make this a “must visit” place on your next trip to Waco.

These guys are the best! They've been around forever and the food is always A+ consistent. I always get the chef salad with double meat, but the regular chef salad still has plenty. They packed my to-go bowl so full that I turned it upside down on a plate to break it up. When I did this, it turned into this upside-down salad cake thing that I thought was hilarious! It was absolutely delicious as usual. I thought the employees would get a kick out of this so I'm including a pic of the "cake". P.S. Please refer to the actual pictures of their salads on other reviews before you judge their product. They are beautiful.
