The 16 Best Atlanta Breweries

"Two middle school science teachers opened Schoolhouse Brewing in Marietta, Ga., more than a decade ago, and their second location called Gymnasium gets an A for their clever take on fusing suds with academics. In a shopping district just a few steps from Atlanta’s prestigious Emory University, tap handles resembling pencils complete with the pink eraser pull 16 different ales and lagers for beer nerds, gamers, sports fans, and even educators who get their own monthly “Teacher Tuesday” night. And we really love Gymnasium for their community activities. Besides hosting everything from European car meetups to run club nights, food pop ups, and trivia, Schoolhouse also takes folks to school with homebrew courses and cooking lessons. The Salty Donut Is Opening in Buckhead and Krog Street and Schoolhouse Brewing Opens at Emory Point in Atlanta - Eater Atlanta

"A second location of Marietta brewery Schoolhouse Brewing opens Friday, November 11, at Emory Point next door to the General Muir. Called the Gymnasium, the brewery is owned by Justin Waller and Thomas Monti, with this location offering a sports theme. The Gymnasium features 12 televisions, 16 beers on tap, and wine as well as games and live music throughout the week. As former teachers, Monti and Waller also shared a love of home brewing before opening Schoolhouse on Franklin Court in Marietta in 2019. Beers made by the brewery include IPAs, sours, stouts, an Irish red ale, and German pilsners, along with barleywine." - Beth McKibben

Nice spot! Seven beers on tap at time of visit; had a hazy IPA, a lager, and a sour…the IPA was my favorite with the sour being the least impressive, but it was still enjoyable enough. Space itself is nice with a pleasant mojo. Staff are friendly and quick to take your order. Parked in the garage and got my parking validated for 3 hours. I simply came to check out the Atlanta location, but will stick to the Marietta one since it has more than double the beers (close to triple) on tap and more to offer in the space especially regarding games. Still a nice second spot though, and definitely fits a niche for the area. Follow-up: Based on owner response staff never informed me that each bar area was serving different beers. Not a big deal, but wish I had known.

This was my first time going to this Brewery/Brew pub, located near Emory in Decatur.  GPS led me to the general vicinity and I found a parking lot in the Emory Point mixed use area .  After parking, a little bit of wandering led me to a sign pointing me towards the entrance, where I was meeting a group of fellow beer lovers.  Stepping inside, I spotted the group near the bar and immediately noticed how huge the place was, offering plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options. Making my way to the main bar, I later found out there was a second one on the opposite side of the brewery. The beer menu, while not overly extensive, offered enough choices for me to settle on trying an IPA.   Besides our group, the spacious establishment was pretty empty, with just a few scattered patrons. The Gymnasium does not have their own food menu, but has teamed up with a neighboring restaurant to offer some of their menu items. Fun games and sports memorabilia were scattered throughout the space.   I stuck around for a couple of rounds before deciding to call it a day. Though the ambiance was pleasant, it felt somewhat low-key. Perhaps we were there too early on a Saturday, even though it was around 2:30pm.  Overall, it was a good experience, but I'm uncertain about a return visit. Maybe for a special event or a sports watch party. 3.5

Google
Love the original so I thought I give this a try. Located on Emory campus, this location has a completely different vibe. Lots of good beers with a sports bar feel featuring two bars with different taps. Lots of near by restaurants if you want to bring in food. Not having kitchen is a con at most places but that also means dogs are welcome inside. Lovely covered patio and large green space with pergolas and tables on the grass complete with a window bar.

Finally!!! This brewery is so close to our home and parking is super convenient. There’s plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with live music on the weekends. The beer variety is awesome with sixteen beers on tap and never a repeat batch. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere very nice. I welcome this brewery!

Visited the new Schoolhouse Gymnasium yesterday for their grand opening weekend. The location is in a really nice area (Emory), and there are multiple food options nearby if you want food. The inside of the Gymnasium is decorated in a fun way with a sports motif all around, and if you're a fan of the iconic Chuck Taylor shoe you'll really dig the Gymnasium's logo. There are also numerous TV's, and while it doesn't have your typical sports bar vibe it would be a solid place to watch your favorite team. As for the beers, the beers were excellent just like you'd get at the original location in Marietta. Living on the Southside of Atlanta this is definitely a closer location for us to enjoy Schoolhouse, and we are already planning a return visit.

Love the atmosphere of the brewery. The location is great and the beer is great. The staff is so nice and inviting. They do not have food, so bring something to eat. If you want a quick snack, you can purchase bags of pretzels. The brewery is located behind General Muir, if you want to grab some food before you get there. The music selection was perfect and they also have live music. If you’re in the area, check them out. Cheers!

Google
They are a wonderful variety of beers that have been well planned and executed. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, in addition to any sports event you’d ever need. It’s a low key sports bar, with the very chill brewery vibe. Ps. They make a house wine, in case you came with someone that is still on the dark side 😉

I have nothing but high praise for The Gymnasium. The place is spacious, well lit, and very clean. The staff were all friendly and knowledgeable about their beers. The beer was excellent and full of good variety across their menu, I’ll definitely be coming back!

Yelp
We have wanted to visit the Gymnasium location since it opened (we usually go to Marietta). It's really nice inside, decorated with fun sports items. They have a lot of seating inside, and the outdoor seating is really nice too. The bartender was helpful and nice! You can bring dog's inside, and he asked if he could bring our pup some water. It's a great place to hang out. I'd recommend if you're in the area!

Yelp
My friend comes here on Thursdays because they offer bogo for drinks! Yes, you're reading it right. Buy one get one free and they let you taste test things so you and a friend can each get a drink for the price of one! They offer sangrias, beer, and wine served in a large space and big windows. Staff were super friendly and there's even a pool table and some games you can use too. Will certainly come again and recommend others to check them out too!

Yelp
SIgn posted that last day open is Oct 27th. Their Marietta location is still open, though.

Yelp
Came in for both a pre and post dinner beer with colleagues during our stay in Atlanta for a conference. The bartender was truly welcoming and chill, patient and curious about us as patrons of the bar. We had a lot of choices on setting, indoor or outdoor, the place was not too busy at all. I got the Sisu Sahti (farmhouse ale) and Lab Partner IPA. Both were enjoyable but nothing too remarkable. I appreciated that they had the pretty wide variety of types of beer, but the list was not overwhelming or too saturated. They welcome you to bring outside food in and I believe they did have small bags of chips for sale. Would recommend if you're nearby.

Yelp
Nice place, very clean and friendly associates. Drag it list isn't my favorite, but I'm somewhat of a beer snob and like what I like. The two hazy IPA's I tried were decent. I would like to see another and maybe a big stout. But that's me and nobody needs to base a place of my likes. I thought the place was really well done. I was one of three people when I visited on a Wednesday afternoon. It has a decent location to Emory and where I was staying. Nice grass area outside too with picnic tables.

Yelp
This is a welcome addition to Emory Point, and I think it will quickly become the happy hour spot of choice for CDC employees given the convenient location! They have two bars, each with a different set of beers on tap, so check out a menu when you walk in to view all the drink options before deciding. The main downside for me is they don't have a kitchen or food options, except for a few snack items like popcorn, but they welcome people bringing in their own food. There is plenty of garage parking available, and they will validate your parking ticket so it's free for two hours. I haven't had the opportunity to try the outdoor area yet, but looks like a good option for when the weather improves!
