"Schubert’s is an institution in the Richmond, known best for its magical Swedish Princess cake, “enrobed” in pale green marzipan. Originally founded by German immigrants in 1911, the bakery now features many old-world European cakes, as well as cookies, tarts, and turnovers." - Dianne de Guzman, Becky Duffett, Eater Staff

"Schubert’s has inhabited the Richmond District for over a century, serving old-world European cakes for at least half that long. The stunner is the princess cake, and it’s San Francisco royalty. Fluffy white layers alternate with custard, jam, and whipped cream, all regally draped in marzipan." - Dianne de Guzman, Becky Duffett

We stopped by Schubert's on a whim and tried their pretzel croissant and custard croissant. The croissants were ok. However, we saw a lot of locals coming in to pick up cakes so I wonder if they are more known for their cakes. They had the cakes in a variety of different sizes. I would have tried a Princess Cake but they didn't have that as an individual serving.

Google
They said the princess cake is the best. It’s the best. Cream is light. Cake is moist. Jam cuts through. The marzipan is the perfect amount. AND it’s beautifully, elegantly decorated. Forgot to take a before picture.

Adorable Fluffy Cakes and Classic Treats 🍰🥭 Schubert’s Bakery is the perfect place to go for classic and cute cakes. They never miss; their cakes are light and flavorful with the perfect frosting-to-cake ratio. I always get their mango mousse cake which is wonderfully fruity and airy without being too sweet. The chocolate cakes are rich and their princess cakes are neat and jammy. This place is a tried and true spot with reliable sweet treats. They always top them with adorable white chocolate candies and dainty icing. I would recommend this place to any cake lover; the perfect spot for an afternoon treat or a pick-up for a special occasion!

The princess cake was so irresistibly yummy that I went back for seconds after eating the first piece. It was a fan favorite at Thanksgiving!

Google
The display is filled with a plethora of colorful, handmade and delicious looking desserts. It was hard to choose just one but I picked a mini chocolate mousse cake. This turned out to be one of the best desserts that I've ever had! The mix of solid chocolate, mousse and cake is...to die for. Can't wait to try more!

Google
I was looking forward to visiting this famous bakery in Richmond, the number of positive reviews for Shubert is really impressive. But unfortunately, after trying their pastries, I was rather disappointed. Being a European myself, I have tried many traditional cakes and pastries in different countries, which gives me an understanding of the balance of their tastes and textures. From what I tried, the raspberry mousse cake only looked good, but the biscuit and mousse (not even similar to raspberry) were separate components that did not interact with each other. Puff pastry with cream was just sweet and very fatty, I think it would not hurt a little vanilla and some sour note. Also, this bakery lacks coffee and a place to sit and taste their goods, fully grab and go spot. Overall it’s unlikely that I’ll give them another try.

We were walking down the street and just stumbled upon Schuberts. We were so pleasantly surprised. We purchased an apple croissant that was not too sweet but delicious and clearly made with real apples. We got a Neapolitan cookie. And finally the best was a slice of princess cake. It was AMAZING! The marzipan icing was beyond soft and melted in my mouth, the cream and jelly layers were immaculate. 20 out of 10! Only thing is this is a pickup bakery and there is no where to sit down to eat, but we sat next door at the coffee shop and enjoyed our pastries. I will be returning soon!

Google
First time buyer at Schubert’s and will absolutely be a returning customer! My partner loved his cake. I got him the Tiramisu cake and everyone was crazy about it. So delicious and loved the touches of the red ribbon wrapped around it and they wrote a happy birthday note on the cake as well at check out. 10/10 !!

Yelp
Prior to Covid Schubert's had inside seating available. I was disappointed that they didn't bring any back at all. There is a wood bench affair outside but if the weather is bad then nowhere to enjoy your treat ‍. With that said, for me, it's all about their Princess Cake. It's a cake that few bakeries make and none I've ever had can compare to Schubert's! That alone is worth 5 Stars.

Yelp
Amazing bakery! This is a must each year for my mom's birthday celebration. The personnel is very helpful making sure that you receive the service needed. I love to have each cake with custom detail and they do that exactly as I want it. I can be picky at times. The bakery has two areas where a customer can pick up items that have been pre ordered or a line where you can choose to pick what you would like. Not noisy at all, their service keeps lines moving along pretty fast. The Swedish princess cake is a must for my mom's birthday each year. This year I also picked up a mango mousse cake that was so delicious! From my experience, I been buying cakes at Schubert's for years and each cake is soft, moist and not overly sweet. That is what I love the most. I can't do overly sweet cakes. The mango mousse was a total surprise. I could really taste the mango, and that creamy mousse went very well with the cakes bringing it all together.

Yelp
I love a good princess cake because c'mon, the name itself is too cute! It's also my sister's favorite cake, so when I was hunting for a satisfactory cake, I got a ton of recommendations for this bakery. Schubert's absolutely delivers when it comes to a princess cake. The marzipan coating is super thin and soft, making it pretty palatable. Some bakeries make it so that the marzipan layer is thick and hard which, as much as I love almond paste/almond meal, is not enjoyable at all. I then end up peeling off the layer and just eating the innards. Fear not, this was not the case with Schubert's! The sponge cake and the fillings are incredibly light and airy. The thin layer of raspberry jam helps tie it all together by adding some tart sweetness. It's also decorated beautifully with minimalistic details - baby macarons, tiny stars, leaves, and patterned chocolates. A must try!

Yelp
We ordered Schuberts for a birthday and boy was it amazing. The creme and how tasty it was blew my mind. I love the topping also because they have fresh fruits. Will def come back here

Michelle R.

Yelp
We had the Strawberry Shortcake and it was perfect. Beautifully decorated and the cake was moist with the perfect amount of sweetness. Highly recommend.

Irene L.

Yelp
I was always interested in trying out their Apple Pies here. I heard it was delicious. I passed by today and decided to walk in and check out their selections. I gravitated towards the Mini Dutch Apple Pie. I enjoyed it, with a top crumb that was still crispy and apple filling that was just right. It was not too sweet but gave a satisfied feeling when finished. The bakery is very simple looking with a few glass vases that display their pastry, tarts, pies, and cakes. It gives off a nice feeling when you walk into this bakery, clean and brightly lit. The workers were nice and friendly. I would buy a whole Apple Pie or try their Fruit Tarts next time.

Yelp
Wow, just WOW. Have I died and gone to heaven? Just attended a memorable birthday party where this raspberry creme birthday cake was served and I kid you not, after taking a first bite of birthday cake served ... the person next to me and I looked at each other and the look in our eyes was saying "this is THE best cake I have ever eaten!" A light, not too sweet yet bursting with raspberry flavor with a layer of almond paste. I was told this type of cake is made at many different bakeries of various quality and variations; called a "Princess cake". I can be a princess everyday but I must insist... my cake will only be from Schubert's! Located on Clement Street. Am sure I will be making a trip there soon. Until then.... yes, I was "that" guest who asked for seconds on the cake... in fact, everyone at our table had a second slice of heaven on earth that day with Schubert's princess cake.

Yelp
Friends brought Schubert fruit tart to a party and it was a big hit. So much fruit on delicious custard with a buttery crust with white chocolate leaves. It was a wonderful way to wrap up a wonderful evening. Heard the service was great and ordering was easy. We'll be going back for our next celebration!

Rose C.

Yelp
The place appeared smaller than I recalled from ages ago. The pastries still looked incredibly appealing and mouthwatering. The staff was incredibly friendly. However, finding street parking was a bit of a challenge.

Ypn82 N.

Yelp
I got this delicious fruit tart cake for family.'I was surprised that they finished the entire cake today.

Will W.

Yelp
Schubert's bakery on Clement Street in San Francisco is a German style bakery serving a variety of pastries from cookies to cakes to pies and more. Once you step in the restaurant, you are teleported back to a 1950s era bakery with glass counters, and metal ceiling tiles highlighted with red accents throughout the storefront. The service is fast and friendly and the staff is more than happy to make recommendations based on your preferences.

Elena D.

Yelp
I love the croissants, madeleine, and gotta have the princess cake and chocolate almond cake. Everything here are moist and delicious. The cakes are smooth velvety and not too sweet.

Ben J.

Yelp
Did you know they call it Swedish Princess Cake because it makes you feel like a princess when you eat it? But no, seriously, we have been coming here for years. It is a reliable go to for birthday cakes and special treats alike. In recent years, they have only seemed to get better and better, which I find rare. There is also now a parklet out front so you can eat your sweet even sooner. For years, the Swedish Princess Cake has been our go to and, frankly, it was so delicious that it prevented us from branching out for a while...The marzipan, berries and sponge are perfectly and not too sweet. The black forest cake also has a great balance of tartness and sweetness. You really can't go wrong with their pastry case! Another strong business to grace a delicious block of Clement. Schubert's is a bakery that we hope will stay around for a long time - may their cakes never stop blessing us.

Cuddly B.

Yelp
Wonderful cakes. Delicious. Always back for more. A bit pricey though but i guess its worth it for family members.

Mara K.

Yelp
I ordered 2 cakes for my Dad's 90th birthday celebration. They were absolutely gorgeous and definitely had the old European style and taste that we were looking for. We also tried the napoleons and my father declared them "absolutely outstanding". The bakery was hopping when I arrived at 9am on a Friday so I suspect it's a good idea to order ahead on the weekends. I met a lovely lady in line whose family has been coming to Schubert's for cakes and pastries since 1921!!!!

Sergio L.

Yelp
Schubert's has been winning hearts since 1911, and you'll feel the history in every bite. Their Swedish Princess Cake is pure magic--you can't just describe it, you've got to experience it. Layers of sponge, cream, and marzipan come together in a perfect symphony. The friendly and welcoming ambiance, thanks to the incredibly kind staff, makes the experience even sweeter. Whether it's your first visit or you're a regular, this place is a must for anyone with a sweet tooth. Trust me, you'll leave with a smile!

Gabe P.

Yelp
Schubert's, not to be confused with Sherbert. That's a type of ice cream silly. If there is a well renowned bakery in San Francisco it's my duty to try it and confirm. I like Schubert's, I got a couple different items on 2 occasions. I wouldn't say I was disappointed but I will say maybe the baked pastry items aren't their main specialty. The cakes and whole pies in here looked insane. I think that's the move at this place. As far as the bakery items goof but not great. For my birthday I want you to get my cake from here though okay? It's July 17th. Don't forget. Thanks. (3.9 Stars)

Nobbi L.

Yelp
Great German Bakery with beautiful pâtisserie. This is a San Francisco/Clement Street institution. If in the area, a must stop!

Ting Ting W.

Yelp
The most beautiful cake for my daughter's first birthday. Truly a work of art. It was a crowd pleaser! I would definitely get the strawberry shortcake sheet cake again. Curious to try all the great reviews on other cakes as well. Thank you Schubert's!

Kyra K.

Yelp
You're guaranteed to have a sweet time at Schubert's Bakery! Word on the street from my Bay Area friends, Yelper reviews, and social media posts is that this is one of the well-worth iconic bakeries to visit for a crafted cake. The bakery has been in operation for over a century so it's a given that they know their stuff and are beloved for it. My longtime friend wanted to visit Schuberts to pick up a cake she'd been yearning for after first trying it decades ago. Surprised I'd never been, we made a day out of it and embarked to the city to visit the bakery. Upon arrival at the shop, it was quiet, fast-paced, and efficiently run by welcoming staff. You're able to view their pastry and cake display while patiently waiting to place, pay, and receive your order. As of September 2023, the infamous bakery has no indoor seating and operates as take-out only. They also have a pickup order window which is beneficial for placing orders online. Schubert's is favored for their diverse selection of cakes. They sell traditional cakes with a flare as well as fruit tarts, pastries, and cookies. For those into sweet things, this is your place since they're heavy on the mousse, whipped cream, and lots more. I've never been a fan of cake--for me, it's too sweet, dense, creamy, and heavy. But for Schubert's, I made the exception to try their iconic Princess Cake. It was moist on the inside, fruity and creamy with each layer, and divine with the marzipan. This cake was ultra sweet for me but I'm glad I got to try their famous slice. My friend got their Berry Blast Cake. Cakes are sold in slices as well as different sizes. Depending on the occasion you can buy in-store or online to pick up which allows customization. For those living in the Bay Area, Schubert's is a landmark known for their cakes and nestled in the Richmond District. Parking is on the street and it's popular to splurge on their pricier cakes for various occasions or their individual sweet treats. Loved for their quality and consistency, this place doesn't play around and I highly recommend it if you love cake.

Brock P.

Yelp
Tried some of the famous Schubert's desserts today. Everything was delicious. The cakes and mousses were light and fluffy. The chocolate was decadent and super rich. Worth every penny for a professional dessert for events, reasonable prices for the individual desserts. Worth going back again for some of the other desserts.

Shannon S.

Yelp
Beautiful desserts that taste even better! Huge hit at our party- took some treats home to my kids and my daughter says they make the best Madeline's she's ever seen!

Jasmine S.

Yelp
Love love, love love this place. I drive all the way here from Concord every year for my birthday to get a princess cake and a few extra treats. Their moose cakes, tiramisu, and shortbread cookies are other favorites of mine. Everything I've had from here is delicious. It's located on a busy street that I've been told is new Chinatown. Lots of fun shops and affordable places to get dumplings or housewares or Boba. Staff is nice. A little on the pricey side, but it's a treat so who cares!

Molly L.

Yelp
They have a delicious princess cake that I've been lucky enough to have a couple of times for a birthday and baby shower. The cake is moist and not too sweet, but still a good amount of sweet. The outside crispy texture and moist inside with the filling is something very unique and so perfect about the cake. Definitely would come back here and try their other offerings.

Sourya S.

Yelp
Ordered a Black Forest and Opera cake for a party. They were kind enough to make them on a very short notice, and the cakes were absolutely delicious and loved by all the guests! The cakes were beautiful, not too sweet, and so so tasty! We also tried some of their pastries when we went to pick up the cakes, and they were really tasty as well. Definitely coming back for more ..

Andrea R.

Yelp
took a chance on the princess cake as not the biggest fan of marzipan and let me tell you, so worth it! we were all so happy with the birthday cake here.

Debbie T.

Yelp
The baker amped up the tiramisu cake. We all lit up after our first bites. It's our go-to for birthdays. The ladyfingers were so fresh, light, and airy. Slightly sweet, too. The cream layers were substantial, not too much. It was like we had it for the first time. Lots or sweet treats at reasonable prices. Waiting for their Christmas stollens. The petit fours are nice with tea or coffee. How 'bout the opera cake? Mango mousse cake and so on. Always polite and helpful service. Still Recommending.

JJ C.

Yelp
These folks have the European touch, especially with the Opera and chocolate mousse cakes. I've ordered both as birthday cakes and they have been a great success. Their small items such as the butter cookies are also excellent and I've bought them to make my own confections. Be careful because they do sell out!

Dave T.

Yelp
I've been coming here for their Swedish Princess Cake for nearly 30 years now. It is one of the best--though all their cakes are excellent. I also regularly get their pear almond or nectarine almond tarts--they are so good and remind me of one of my childhood favorites.

Raymond L.

Yelp
The management of Schubert's bakery is no good after the change of ownership. They shut their doors in their official business hours. This is the second time it happened when I arrived at the bakery at 4:44 pm and found their door locked with iron bars. The poster in front of the door indicated holiday business hours on December 27 is at 6 pm whereas their website indicates their closing time is 5:00 pm. It hurts longtime loyal customers coming to the bakery and leaving in disappointment.

Yanli X.

Yelp
I got the princess cake for my nephew's birthday. This was my first princess cake aside from IKEA so I may not be the best judge. It was well received although a little too sweet for our tastes, especially the marzipan. The jammy layers in between were really rich and moist. Would recommend for someone who has a sweet tooth!

Kim T.

Yelp
My friend ordered a cake from Schubert's Bakery recently for a birthday/baby shower event and I have to say: it was the best strawberry shortcake I've ever had and I sure do love my strawberry shortcakes! There was an abundance of strawberries! They were so fresh and delicious! The cream was perfectly whipped and not too sweet. The actual cake was very light and fluffy! I'd you're looking for cakes, this is the place!

Lauren L.

Yelp
WOWWW! I always used to get cakes and cookies (madelines are a must here) here as a kid, everyone in my family ordered various cakes over the years and have never been disappointed. I visited again recently, introduced my chocolate fanatic friends to their array of mini specialty cakes and they all fell utterly in love. Head over heels IN LOVE. I don't think you can go wrong with of their treats here. I even tried their crème puffs, literally so soft and airy without being overly sweet. There isn't anything i've had that I've strongly disliked. I've had friends who have worked here, as well, and bakers start so early and are so detailed. Just the dedication and care they put in has been unmatched. A local gem. It gets busy for good reason! But it's 100% worth it.

Bessie T.

Yelp
Oldie but goodie. Do you love German chocolate? Yes? Do you love fresh whip cream? Yes - you say? For the first yes (lover of dark chocolate) - order any of the chocolate cakes! You won't regret it! For the 2nd one - you like whipped cream? Get the strawberry shortcake! Still can't decide? Get a mini of each and try it. This is my "go to" dessert place when I bring desserts to parties. And this is why I'm always assigned desserts.

Adrian L.

Yelp
My brother told me about Schubert's as his wife really enjoys their cookies. I could totally see why. I tried the shortbread with blueberry and it was fantastic :) They have nice assortment boxes and the one go to is for $14.50 with three different types of cookies. They make wonderful gifts. The service is always wonderful and friendly. I've got to try their other pastries and cakes. I'll definitely be back :)

Rob C.

Yelp
princess cake is perfect. lives up to the yummy white cake layers with raspberry filling and kirsch custard, iced with whipped cream, and enrobed in marzipan. not too sweet

Helen L.

Yelp
Hot criss buns are here. Thank you for Yelper HL for letting me know. I don't have to keep on wondering. I got my fix! Frozen ones too.

Richard W.

Yelp
Very fresh cake. The best strawberry shortcake I ever have. I am not a strawberry person but their is so fresh and good that my friend ate half of the 10" by herself. Their princess cake is awesome too and always our favorite and we have that many times. This year we decide to try something else and the simple strawberry shortcake gave us a very pleasant surprise.

Priyanka S.

Yelp
Schubert's bakery is absolutely delicious. It is one of my family's go to spots for getting any celebratory cakes. For mom mom's birthday this year we got the strawberry shortcake and it was divine! The buttercream frosting was perfectly whipped and fluffy while not being overly sweet. In addition, every single layer was packed with berry goodness with strawberries and strawberry cream. The team even went above and beyond and added a white chocolate decadent sign saying happy birthday atop the cake. I cannot recommend schubert's more highly!

Jana C.

Yelp
Some amazing SF history on this same site-- since I911? In the queue, ladies reminisced about their childhoods and told me how the counter was a former U-shape. So nice to see a bakery withstand all of the economic factors at play here. Light whipped cream and the sponge in the cakes are always what is so dreamy and light here!!!

Florence G.

Yelp
schubert is literally my childhood and i grew up eating schubert's and what a privilege that is. for people who love fruit based tarts, mousses, or cheesecake, to classic chocolate based stuff, i feel like schubert's has never gone down in quality and they have such a large range or variety. there is nothing bad to say about them, i love y'all. service is usually pretty good, though waiting in line kinda sux and can be time consuming. i love how in my 20+ years of life, the interior has never changed. ALSO they sometimes give freebies and do discounts when it's later in the day/ they wanna close with the least amount of waste as possible. for freebs, i once got a mini cake, and the other day my companion got their cream puff as a gift (SO SO GOOD MUST GET THE CREAM PUFF/ recommend) i always love their cheesecake and mousses, i'm a sucker for their strawberry or mango cheesecakes or mousses and my companion love their fruit tarts because they just do not cheap out!! they give hella fruits and esp cus it's summer, the fruits are so sweet. i definitely want to try their non cake related stuff like their cookies, pastries, etc on the right side. i felt like i never really considered that when i go to schubert's cus i just always got their cakes haha

Sharon V.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 15 years. One of the best places when you need a cake or want an assortment of desserts. Our favorites are the double chocolate mousse, St. Honore cake, strawberry shortcake, eclairs, napoleon, and croissants - just to name a few. The only thing missing is a gluten free cake but they're traditionalists with over a century of baking. I get that you can't create the same great results with gluten free and you don't have to when what you've been doing so well for as long as they have, works.

Mars R.

Yelp
Delicious and beautiful products! Very helpful and friendly staff. Beautiful and inviting shop, be prepared to wait in line especially in the mornings but well worth it. Ordered a custom black forest cake for a birthday, and it was gorgeous and delicious!

PracticalOne S.

Yelp
Desserts look pretty, ordered a cake and was bit dry, didn't expect that for the cost. Cake was decorated nicely.

Vanessa L.

Yelp
Our family's favorite bakery for birthday cakes. For decades, Schubert's cakes have been the stars of our birthday celebrations. We love the princess, strawberry shortcake, and opera cakes the most. But they are all delicious! We usually get some cookies when we pick up our cakes too. The cakes are light, moist, not overly sweet. The fresh fruit toppings and chocolate message plaques are such a wonderful touch. And they are always quick and courteous no matter how crowded and busy it gets. We love Schubert's!

Lady K.

Yelp
Cakes were amazing! Light and fluffy texture, less sweetness, well-balanced flavor, and tasted really good. Customer service was great.

Luke S.

Yelp
This place is so good. I want to be able to bake like them. I blame the easy bake oven. It gave me way too much confidence when I was a kid. It gave me the impression that baking was going to be a cake walk. I was so young and stupid. I didn't realize the delusion I was living in until I started baking with a real oven in my twenties. I know the easy bake oven had good intentions, it was trying to grow my confidence at a young age, but I just don't think it set me up for the reality of baking. Unfortunately, I think it's too late for me now, I'll never learn how to bake like Schubert's Bakery and even if it is possible...it's so much easier for me to continue to blame the easy bake oven, so that's exactly what I'm going to do. Anyway, it's nice to know I don't need to be an incredible baker, I can just go here.

Ayse C.

Yelp
Five stars. The best bakery in SF in my opinion. My favorites are chocolate mousse cake with almonds and cream puffs. And fruit tarts are heavenly.

Winnie W.

Yelp
Can you believe Schubert's been around since 1911?!?!!!! A SF stable, they have just the MOST DELISH strawberry shortcakes!!! And are famous for their variety of baked goods, including: pastries, cakes, pies and tarts. I totally lucked out and walked in today with no line! And ordered one of each of their strawberry shortcake, the Princess cake, Double Chocolate, and a couple boxes of their almond cookies to go!! SO YUM!! Their store is always super clean, and service is always friendly and their staff are so friendly and knowledgeable, and are happy to make recommendations as needed. A must try if you haven't yet done so!
