Where to Eat the Best Burgers in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"An eatery called Scoop du Jour is not the place one would expect to find a good burger. Tell that to all the Madison Park denizens who have become regulars. While the listed burger is a well-rounded affair enriched by mayonnaise on the bottom bun and thousand island on the top, insiders know you can customize with whatever is possible in the kitchen (like grilling the onions and subbing in mustard or ketchup). The lack of fries leaves room for ice cream for dessert! Best for: Casual first dates." - Jay Friedman

Scoop Du Jour Review - Madison Park - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Scoop Du Jour is a tiny ice cream shop in Madison Park with flavors that will make you feel like a child at a birthday party - e.g. cookies and cream, cake batter (with enough blue frosting to dye your tongue), and cotton candy. There are also tamer flavors like vanilla and rocky road, so whatever you’re looking for, you’re likely to leave happy. There’s nothing special about the space, but it’s a perfectly great spot to grab a cone on a hot day. photo credit: Erin Lodi" - Aimee Rizzo

Google
Honestly the best coffee in the area. A must if you want an ice cream or a good cup of coffee. Staff 10/10!

Google
Very cute place in the neighborhood especially in the summer! Lots of ice cream flavors. I had a simple green tea and you can't go wrong with treating yourself to an ice cream cone! Friendly workers.

I wasn’t sure what the closing time was as I pulled up and parked across the street to his shop. I pulled it up on google and it said it closed at 8. It was 6:58 when I arrived. The door was locked so I walked away and an elderly man came and opened it. He said he was closed but would let me in. I told him I checked first for this very reason. He said he didn’t care what it said he closes at 7 but would assist me. I decided to leave since he made me feel like it was such an inconvenience.

Google
Perfect coffee in GLASS and not paper cup! A true gem! With good prices and tip options starting with 10% not 18. Great break from all the gentrified cafes. I loved it ❤️

Google
Great classic ice cream flavors at surprisingly reasonable prices! Plus friendly service! We like to stop by whenever we’re in the area.

Google
The burger is the best I've had in a long time. It's the classic drive-in burger. It'll get a little messy, but you'll just lick your fingers!

Google
The hamburger was amazing. The salted caramel brownie ice cream I will have dreams about. No pic disappeared to fast.

Hours online are wrong... Twice. Walked across the neighborhood and just getting annoyed now lol

Yelp
Cute spot with fun flavors right in Madison Park near the water. They have froot loops, bubblegum, and a bunch of sorbet options. The hours on yelp are not accurate and they are open until 9pm Mon-Sat

Yelp
There were lots of flavors to choose from but we went with birthday cake and moose tracks. The service was attentive and speedy and it was pretty relaxed as they were closing in the next hour or so. Great spot for ice cream not too far from the beach and other restaurants.

Yelp
The food is surprisingly excellent. And the Scoop Burger is the best! Compare it to the best burger restaurants around, Scoop meets or beats the local burger places A wide variety of ice cream and sorbet flavors and toppings. However, I am so surprised that they have a very mediocre tasting, lower quality, ice cream supply. FOOD AND BURGERS ARE AMAZING! Get a frank or a sandwich or a burger. The cook has been there for decades and he has always been a careful creator and knows how to make the best tasting food. Limited food menu- the burgers and cold sandwiches - although having it on toast is an option The BLT is excellent- carefully crafted and high quality lettuce, ripe tomatoes and lots of bacon - and the big frankfurters are a local insider favorite. I really like the food, I have several favorites, and who needs to read through a long menu of mediocrity. I am confident that most everyone will be able to find something they like on the menu and will enjoy the great preparation and the high quality ingredients. The ice cream is not up to the same quality as the food.

Yelp
When walking in the space looks really cute, but actually taking a look a the flavors the ice cream looked melted and unappetizing. I ended up getting a scoop and trying it, but it was totally flavorless and mushy. For being in one of Seattle most expensive neighborhoods, I'd rather go to baskin Robins or Molly Moons.

Yelp
Grainy ice cream, stale cones, It could be a lot cleaner. Saw a doggy outside refuse to take a lick of a vanilla cone, Yes. terriers are rather picky. Maybe his flavor was pistachio or maybe He got a whiff of the dirty floor.

Yelp
I love supporting a small shop here in Seattle. They sell ice cream the way it used to be in big barrels of homemade goodness. I was very excited to see maple walnut ice cream available as I can never find it on the West Coast. Apparently they have amazing burgers, but I really appreciate that ice cream cone for less than five dollars.

Tom W.

Yelp
Best burgers in Seattle. Ice cream is great too. Closes too early, but just get there.
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite icecream spot in Seattle. Been going there for 13 years. Wonderful owners and staff and the icecream is fantastic. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
The hamburger is delicious. Big, juicy, fresh. 5 stars! I wish they had more dairy-free ice creams/sorbets. So that's my only comment. Ownership, if you see this... please have more dairy-free options so my lactose-intolerant self can spend more money at your business.

Emily C.

Yelp
So many choices! Tables for sitting, too! Good ol' ice cream shoppe!

Yelp
Before you shop here, please remember. They do not accept debit or credit. Cash only establishment. Super cute neighborhood shop. A great go to after a nice day at Madison beach park. The store also sells espresso and coffee. Lots of seating outside as well. The ice cream prices are relatively cheap, under 3$ for a small scoop and 4$ for a regular scoop. Made from real fruit banana ice cream and other Olympic mountain brand flavored ice creams (which has been handcrafted for over 30 years). There is this really cute elderly gentleman who works the floor, and he's very giving. Thank you for the generous small scoop! There is no extra charge for cake or sugar cone. And asking for samples are welcomed. Will have to try the burger, looks like it got an excellent review!

Yelp
This spot really hits my soul! The burgers with chips and ice cream is just what makes a weekly and weekend thing much needed! Me, my girl, and her daughter would go all the time back in the day! It was one of the first spots I had when I got back from NYC! Ahhhh how I missed this spot! Still delicious and I heard they are getting renovated guess who will be there to support and check out! Me Juicy flavorful and made to order with perfection! That's how I like it. They hve some seating and parking in the front and across the street! This place is pretty stinking cute!

Yelp
The only thing I can comment on is the customer service as I walked out after being ignored for 10 minutes. The person with the short shorts, hair pulled back and an attitude that could kill was less than pleasant and ignored me in line. Never once said hi, one second, hold on or anything of the like. They just proceeded to help the drunk man who walked in and barked the order at her. Your product isn't worth the paper cup it's served in, when you don't have the customer service to go along with it. What a disgracefully shameful experience especially when calling after I left (to get an email address), asking if there was a manager and the same person just barked "no" and hung up.

Yelp
My overall impression is meh. Burger was $11.50 + tax and I personally didn't like it very much. Ice cream was okay, between the two of us, we tried the party animal, birthday cake, strawberry cheesecake and pb chocolate. The girl working there said there was cheesecake bits in the strawberry cheesecake ice cream, but there weren't. There were some ice bits though, I didn't really like the flavor. Wasn't crazy about the birthday cake or party animal flavors either. Pb chocolate was pretty good. Two small two flavor/scoop cups and one burger cost about $28. I don't see us coming back for more.

Yelp
I've been going here off and son since 1985. Great selection of ice cream flavors and good service. I have never eaten their hot dogs, etc but I love their sundaes. A bit steep prices in a wealthy neighborhood.

Yelp
Absolutely adorable and delicious little spot in Madison. My friends and I stopped in for ice cream on a warm Wednesday afternoon. The girl behind the counter was very sweet and friendly, and let us try as many flavors as we wanted. She didn't rush my friends who took a long time deciding. I knew fairly quickly that I wanted something with berries. I sampled the Marionberry Cheesecake and the Wild Blackberry. It was very difficult to decide because both were wonderful. The cheesecake crust in the Marionberry Cheesecake tasted like it was freshly made and it was still crispy. (Sometimes the crust can get soggy when it's an ice cream.) Still, I went with the Wild Blackberry because it almost bowled me over with how tart and tangy and sweet and fresh it was. Like a scoop of summer in a cone! Speaking of cones, they were making waffle cones fresh and mine was just still slightly warm. Not warm enough to melt the ice cream, but warm enough to indicate freshness. And boy was it! I think it was one of the best waffle cones I've ever had. It was nice and thin and crispy, with a delicious flavor but not too sweet. We didn't stay inside but I noticed they had free water and restrooms. There are lots of windows, so it's bright and cute inside. There were families inside enjoying their ice cream but most people were sitting out front or walking around, enjoying the day. I definitely recommend coming here for a sweet treat!

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was a kid. They have the best burgers but be prepared to have lots of napkins. They are messy. Glad they're starting to carry frozen yogurt with toppings it's always nice to have a variety of choices when it comes to indulging in dessert.

Yelp
Very tasty ice cream and a must stop if you're in Madison park!!! I had the mint chocolate chip ice cream & cake batter in a cup. I wish I would have had it in a waffle cone. I can't wait to come back and try the scoop burger. Highly recommend going to Scoop Du Jour!!
google avatar

Yelp
Now these guys can make a burger! Ordered a burger with cheese & the works (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle & house sauce. Simply delicious & one of the best traditional burgers I've eaten - I will be back to try their sandwiches which are basic (tuna, BLT, turkey, etc.) but Scoop Du Jour does the classics right!

Yelp
Sort of has a sports bar feel, with TVs in each corner of the shop. A hint of grubbiness exudes from the premises, inside and out. This place has been around for many years. I'd been here a few times, and had fairly neutral experiences each time. However, I was disappointed on my last visit. I ordered a Cookies & Cream milkshake. The shake had no flavor whatsoever (not even vanilla). Also, it started out runny, but before I was even half way through it, it had completely melted and was the consistency of milk (it was not even hot in there). And to think I got a spoon to eat the shake with. That turned out to be rather unnecessary. What happened to their ice cream shakes? An unmitigated disaster.

Steven H.

Yelp
For an ice cream joint, their burgers are weirdly good (As well as the rest of their fast-food-esque offerings). And the ice cream is good too!

Yelp
I was starving and so were my puppies. I saw a sign outside of this place that said service dogs only. I walked in with my tiny pups in my coat and asked if I could just quickly order, and have my food brought to their outside seating. Young wait person said, "Absolutely no dogs inside restaurant." I tried to ask again if she could just take my order and she repeated her mantra. Any place with rude wait staff like that, cannot be good and thank you young lady for steering me and my friends away from your unworthy establishment. The next time you entertain another customer with animals in tow, you might ask if they are service animals before you summarily dismiss them.

Shana M.

Yelp
After a hot day at Madison Park Beach with friends we were in some dire need of that cool ice cream so we headed over to Scoop Du Jour. I got a scoop of the Moose Tracks (peanut butter cups) and a scoop of Death by Chocolate and it was very satisfying :) I also got a grilled cheese (cheddar on sourdough) and it was warm, buttery, and really brought me back to childhood. I thought $8.75 was a little steep for bread&cheese, but I can't complain about the flavor! My friends both got burgers and said they were GREAT. Overall, good experience!

Yelp
This place gets a full star or two based on location alone. It is one of the closer places to my apt. and it is an area that is nice and relaxing to enjoy a cone in. It is a no-frills joint but offers about 20 flavors, all of which make me drool thinking about. I had a dulce de leche and it was amazing. Apparently they sell other kinds of food there as well. They lose a star because despite getting a pretty huge scoop even for a regular size the price borders "almost" ridiculous and because they are cash only. Other than that I'm sure I'll visit several times over the summer.
google avatar

Kirstie C.

Yelp
This place is cute and quaint, and has an old school feel with a good selection of ice cream. The only thing i'd say kind of sucks is the pricing (probably because of the neighborhood it is in?) which is a little high for ice cream. It isn't even specialty/gourmet ice cream like Molly Moons but just as expensive for smaller scoops. Plus the guys that work there are kind of pushy and rude and answer back like they don't want to be there (which they probably don't honestly) which made no sense since there weren't any customers in there besides myself. I think i'd only come here again if I was in the area and really craved ice cream, but other than that, I don't think i'd go back.
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
Went here for the first time ever and I believe they have the best mint & chip ice cream in Seattle! The customer service was excellent & I wish I found this gem sooner! We will be back for more scoops, thank you!
google avatar

Morgan S.

Yelp
If you want to support a local business who has been around for over 35 years (owned by the same family), look no further. All of Scoops ice cream comes from the PNW. Alpenrose, Olympic Mountain, and Cascade Glacier are all brands that cannot be found in ice cream stores anymore. They usually get new flavors in every week and don't limit you to seven options like "fancy" ice cream stores. Pricing is pretty reasonable and you'll get more bang for your buck if you order a pint or quart. Obviously get the Scoop Burger with grilled onions and "the works." The BLTs hit the spot too. Locals know this place doesn't compare!
google avatar

Sally R.

Yelp
Best hamburgers in town. BLT is over the moon. Milkshakes are a must. My son lives in Los Angeles and loves to stop in when he's in town.
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
Had the " Maui Waui" sherbet. It was very good. The girl behind the counter was rude. Completely uninterested to be there, and just plain miserable. I'll go back for the ice cream, but only if she's not working.

Kim S.

Yelp
Scoop has delicious burgers and some of the best ice cream in the city. Ignore the people leaving negative reviews about service, this place is a sweet neighborhood spot with nice people working it who care about their customers and their community.
google avatar

Nick L.

Yelp
Scoop is a family run little place. The Washington's are great people, the Father stocks everything for the day in the morning, the son runs everything in the front, while the mom is the chef in back. During the summer months they hire young kids to help out to gain work experience. The Scoop burger is awesome, the meat actually has flavor as opposed to other places where the meat is bland. They do sandwiches too, with your choice of bread (white, wheat, lite rye, dark rye, sourdough), meats, and condiments.
google avatar

Richard S.

Yelp
We've enjoyed coming here for years (love the remodel btw). A great stop on a sunny summer day, although it can get busy. Lots of great flavors!

Vita S.

Yelp
Great ice cream, even more excellent burger. Having gone meatless only a year ago, this is the only burger that I actually miss. It's been here for ages and is a staple, especially on beach days. Great and essential part of the community.

Yelp
On the very short list for best cheeseburger in Seattle - that's not news, but you need to know. Now I learn they have the absolute best tuna sandwich in town, which I learned recently somewhat by accident when my wife asked me to go there using FlyBuy (where you order through the FlyBuy app and they bring your order out to you curbside - awesome service). I am a really tough customer when it comes to tuna sandwiches and we were blown away by how good it was. Scoop is run by Ed, someone I went to grade school with in the same neighborhood (40 years ago or so), and they have sort of been the only game in town for ice cream in Madison Park for 25 years or more. The cheeseburger / bacon burger thing has happened slowly, but now it seems everyone in Madison Park who is willing to indulge from time-to-time, and admit it, will get the burger, though I would hazard a guess that most of them/us have rarely eaten one there - it's something to take home and indulge in at home. But now with FlyBuy - it's even easier to indulge now that you can almost be anonymous when you pick up your order. Sure you need to eat at Monsoon, Harvest Vine, Crush, Mamnoon, and Nishino and some of the true signature restaurants in town, but if you miss Scoop, whether you live here or are just visiting, your experience is incomplete.
google avatar

Yelp
I go here for the burgers. I went here to get ice cream for like decades, but my brother raved about how bomb the burgers were. I usually disregard his recommendations because when my brother hypes up places, as they tend suck ass since he's loaded when he goes. I know from personal experience that the shittiest food tastes like mario bitali personally made it for you when you're baked off of your ass. But when you go back sober it's bootylicious and not in a good way. But this place actually delivered, the burgers are awesome be warned though, you have to call in advance because I think these guys have to go through the whole process of slaughtering a cow and grinding it up since it takes them like 45 minutes to make one. But it's worth it, especially since they put real cheddar and not that plastic american food cheese bullshit.
google avatar

Alison V.

Yelp
The scooper was a bit snippy, but that was ok. I think she was just frustrated with 3 giggling people trying to figure out ice cream decision making. She was super helpful to a friend though with avoiding stuff with too much milk in it. I had a scoop of toasted coconut with fudge. It was deeeelicious. I wanted the chocolate fudge one, but they were out. I was supposed to get that by the blue lid, but didn't. (See above paragraph with snippy scooper). However, it was a great little shop and it's close enough to a park and the beach that you can go to enjoy your cone or cup at! We had lunch before we got there, so no trying the other food, but it smelled yummy. Oh, and beware, CASH (or check) ONLY!
google avatar

Dea A.

Yelp
I love this ice cream shop! They are the only ice cream shop that sells the local ice cream, Olympic Mountain Ice Cream, which is sold at all of the top restaurants (Daniel's etc) in Seattle. I have found the staff always helpful and fun, even though I always come in right before they close. This store has some small outside seating and is always a place of gathering on any summer day. The Coconut Almond Fudge is my favorite, but all of the Olympic Mountain Ice Cream flavors are all awesome. I recently discovered something amazing though... you can buy a whole pint for only $4.75! For all of those people that said that it is expensive should just buy a pint and they will be a lot happier.

Yelp
I'm always impressed with a business when they remember who I am. I don't expect them to remember my name at all but I'm always stunned that anyone can remember me, especially after a few years. I used to go there a lot when I was younger for an egg-salad sandwich and a strawberry milkshake. I was waxing nostalgic the other day walking through the park when I happened by Scoop, and suddenly I was transported back quite a few years to much easier days of my life. I went in and the wonderful man behind the counter immediately recognized me and asked me about my life and how I was doing as he made my milkshake. We talked a bit before I left with my milkshake and my extra bit in a paper cup. The milkshake was quite tasty and hit the spot. It was perfectly made just the way I remember, crystallized pieces of milk and ice crunched in my mouth and kept my teeth tinglingly happy the whole time. I was very happy... and will go back next time. By the way, they have awesome burgers the size of your face!
google avatar

Nerick M.

Yelp
On a nice, sunny day nothing really beats a cool scoop (or two...or three) of delicious ice cream. I particularly love those mom-and-pop type of ice cream shops because they usually have something out of the ordinary that's good......like unique ice cream flavors, or extra large scoops, or interesting atmosphere, etc. Scoop Du Jour doesn't really have any of that but I still like it because of the location in beautiful Madison Park. The service is friendly and they give fairly big scoops of ice cream from their big selection. So, check it out and get the latest "scoop" on the place (OK, I know that was corny but had to do it).
google avatar

Mitchell A.

Yelp
The staff at Scoop Du Jour were more interested in chatting than serving clients. It took over 5 minutes for the young woman behind the counter to make an iced coffee drink for the gentlemen in front of us... The ice cream was disappointing, for the price I expected more than Edys and a handfull of other flavors. My companion had a bland cookie dough and I had the Lemon Vanilla. The waffle cones were also rather stale. Will I venture back to Scoop... not likely.

Jamie P.

Yelp
Best place to get a burger in the madison park area. Super flavorful and special sauce is delicious. Definitely would recommend.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Locally owned = +1 Good location near a park = +1 Lots of parking = +1 Cash only = -1 Ice cream quality = -1 The ice cream isnt as good as Molly Moons or Full Tilt, but it's completely passable and serves locally made ice cream. Lots of standard flavors, not much interesting to an ice cream connoisseur. It really hits the spot on a sunny day though! Reasonable prices and nice people who work there. The blueberry cheesecake is good. The sorbet tastes a little over-sweet to me. I want to give it more stars because it's so hole-in-the-wall-y, but "A-OK" is as good as I can give in good conscience.
google avatar

Evita-Marie R.

Yelp
I visit this cute ice cream shop on a regular basis as it is right down the street from where I live. The ice cream is delicious. Although not homemade, they serve many flavors by Olympic Mountain Ice cream which I frequently see in many nice dining restaurants around the city. My favorite flavor is a salted carmel swirl brownie. Delicious.
google avatar

Donte P.

Yelp
Ths place would get a 5 if only the milkshakes were better. Sure, it was made with the simplest recipe (ice cream + milk), but even with that being the case, the consistency needed a bit of help. Don't get me wrong, it was still a damn fine milkshake, but more of an average experience there than the real point of this review, the burger. I've read here and elsewhere that Scoop had great burgers, and finally got a chance to check it out. All of the praise is well warranted. The bread was just right, the meat was tasty, and the overall package was far beyond "satisfactory." This is a burger without pretension, without any aspirations to be more than what it is, but it works all the same. Sure, it's shredded lettuce that falls all over, but so what? Yeah, that's a white onion, not a red one, but big deal. The cheese tasted more American than cheddar, but no matter. This was an all-American burger in all of the best meanings of the phrase. The only real criticisms I have of the place are that they don't accept credit cards and that they're just beyond walking distance for lunch. Small gripes, and I'll definitely be returning soon.

Maddie P.

Yelp
Great ice cream and frozen yogurt (in the warmer months) and The Best Burger! It was such a pleasant surprise. We will be going back soon!
google avatar

Beau J.

Yelp
Best burger in Seattle. Boom. It's all about the Washingtons. The family who owns it is named the Washingtons. If you want a burger, it's actually all about the Hamiltons. Cuz them tasty meat-pies round up to 10 bucks. But worth every president.
google avatar

Sheila Y.

Yelp
I agree with all the reviewers that this is the best ice cream shop in Seattle, however there is no way I can give it a five because I have had much much better in Denver/Boulder, Chicago, and SF. The waffle cones here are a must and the butter pecan is super yum. However I can safely say that anything you order will be creamy and perfectly balanced between rich and sweet. The service can be a bit slow, but they are always very friendly and generous with the samples. I don't really recommend hanging out per se, but for a post Cactus snack this is where I head (as if the 10 dollar Nachos aren't enuf as it is).
google avatar

Emma R.

Yelp
It always frustrates me that I finish my cone at Scoop then walk over to the small grocery store across the street and realize that I could have gotten a huge tub of ice cream for less than my own scoop and cone. The price aside though, this is, in my opinion, one of the last try ice cream parlors in Seattle. They have all your classic flavors, good cones, they make shakes and malts and they offer up great grilled cheese sandwiches and hamburgers. In the summer this place can become packed and for good reason. It is just a few blocks away from the Madison Park beach, a hot spot of beach goers during the summer months. Another thing I love about Scoop is that while there has been the same guy working behind the counter since before I can remember they also always hire young high school or college students, a fact that I find refreshing and sweet. If you want that sweet family run feel and a great scoop or two of quality ice cream head on over to Scoop Du Jour.

La M.

Yelp
One-stop-shop! Affordable and delicious! I come here all of the time and hands-down they have thee best burgers and sandwiches in the Madison Park area!!! Their ice cream servings are very generous with tons to select from. On top of that, the staff is super friendly and upbeat!
