"Scoops is one of our favorite post-lunch guilty pleasures. Located between Chego and Endorffeine, Scoops is a great place to visit after getting your lunch time fix. Known for its unusual flavors like Brown Bread and Black Sesame, Scoops will have something for everyone (including vegans)." - Rubric

On the Grid : Scoops

"Every neighborhood should have an ice creamery- East Hollywood is pretty lucky that we got a Scoops. Come here often, the flavors change frequently, and with combos like roasted sesame and kabocha you'll actually want to. Try Brown Bread, it's the only flavor they keep permanently on the menu." - Cris Cimatu

The Best Ice Cream Shops in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"With locations in Highland Park and Chinatown, Scoops is the place for an ever-changing array of innovative flavors, like Grapenut-infused brown bread and strawberry balsamic created by founder Tai Kim. Kim has always served a good selection of non-dairy, oat milk-based options as well with the same approach to interesting flavors." - Eater Staff

16 Outstanding Ice Cream Shops in Los Angeles, Summer 2023

"One of LA’s most classic shops at this point, with a history going back to the mid-2000s, Tai Kim’s enduring ice cream destination in Highland Park and Torrance (plus a separately owned Chinatown outlet) is the place to find a rotating array of changing flavors. Find anything from Grapenut-infused brown bread to things like strawberry balsamic. There’s always a good selection of non-dairy oat milk-based flavors as well." - Eater Staff

Google
I didn't go directly, and I actually waited a long time for my ice cream to eat it once I got home, but it was still amazing. The fact that I waited 30 mins-1 hour to eat my ice cream, (once I got home) and it is still good is obvious that it deserves five stars. My cousin also says that they only have like 4 workers who make all the good ice cream is crazy.

Google
First time in Scoops at York. The place is bright with cheerful decor. I really love the light installation made of ice cream spoons. Service is friendly and excellent. We sampled several flavors before ordering and the staff were very accommodating. The matcha horchata Oreo, blueberry cheesecake and sea salt chocolate Oreo were our hands on favorites. I had high hopes for the lavender coffee but the floral note was too light.

Google
So good, so unique. I am always excited to find out what their new flavors are. Tonight, I went with the pandan coffee + ricotta cheese cognac - wow! Staff is always helpful, too, def ask for their recos!

Google
This place has amazing staff and will give you great flavours for a great price, very affordable. Indoor seating is great as well.

Hard to say no to a spot with non-dairy ice cream! I was visiting Donut Friend next door and decided to pop in to try out the ice cream here. I got a kiddie scoop of the vegan caramel oreo. I was hoping for caramel ribbons in the ice cream but instead there was a salty caramel taste to the oreo ice cream. Not bad though. Many flavors, including 4 non-dairy and a few more sorbets. The sign posted on the door didn't full match the available flavors inside (weird). We also waited for a while before anyone came out of the back to greet us. They were surprisingly slow on a warm Saturday afternoon (while next door had a line out the door). Covid precautions in place - plastic divider at the register, hand sani provided, no samples.

Google
Awesome little ice cream shop in a cool neighborhood. I was planning on going to Donut Friend next door but ice cream sounded nice for a change. We each got a single scoop in a cone, each with two flavors. All together we tried Butterscotch Oreo, Sea Salt Chocolate and Burnt Sugar Vanilla all of which were great. Highly recommend!

Google
Wanna get some yummy ice cream after you’ve had a burger at Amboy? There’s a variety of unique flavors at Scoops, in which I got a red velvet & oreo + vanilla & m&m shake. Probably would recommend having ice cream rather than milkshake because I think you can savor it better. The flavor was sweet and creamy, but in hindsight, I would have chosen just one flavor for the shake.

Google
I’ve been a fan of Scoops for more than a decade now tracing back to their location in East Hollywood. Of all the delicious homegrown LA ice cream shops (thinking of Afters, Wanderlust, Magpies) and transplants (Jeni’s, McConnell’s, Salt & Straw), Scoops stands out for both its creativity, excellence, and humble local vibes. A recent poll with my wife and kids of our favorite ice cream we’ve ever had, Scoops’ brown bread was first or tied for first for all four of us. If you’ve never had it, it is the one flavor that never changes at Scoops, and it is sheer perfection. The team here is so kind. The samples are generous. The flavors change constantly and explore a wonderful range of flavors. If they are offering their Guinness or sea salt chocolate or pistachio (in any combination), do yourself a favor and get it.

Yelp
We are so lucky to have Scoops!! The owner is a an artist and such a lovely human being! He says he tries to share about flavors with the community. It is so nice to go into the cool shop with its awesome mobile and giant icee cream. He even allows people to recommend flavor they'd like to see on a white board. How community minded!! I feel so grateful my kids are growing up with a place like this. It's like a fairy tale. Support Scoops!! Scoops loyal!!

Yelp
Simple, good flavors. And they finally take cards now. Appreciate the simplicity of this spot!

Yelp
Always friendly faces at scoops. As a lactose intolerant lady it's nice to have someplace that will always have a few good dairy free choices.

Yelp
LA is not short of amazing ice cream~ every time I get the "itch" for sweetness, I get thrust into another adventure of finding the next best dopamine rush. Scoops achieved this by not only the flavor of the dessert, but by the warmth we felt from Rudey (I apologize if I spelled your name wrong)! He was the only worker here at the time and welcomed my partner and I with such a bright spirit that we couldn't help but smile! It made the ice cream taste THAT much better! Atmosphere: 4/5 The simplicity of the store allows for you to focus on the flavors offered there. There wasn't any fancy decor, but you know that will not take away from the gustatory experience. Service: 5/5!! Rudey greeted us and really showed us genuine hospitality. He took his time explaining the flavors and did not rush us into selecting a scoop. His lighthearted energy was the perfect complement to the mellow evening my partner and I were having. Presentation & flavor: 5/5 We opted for the oreo cheesecake and forgot the second scoop flavor, but anyways... YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH ANYTHING HERE! They have an assortment of unique flavors such as Genmaicha and horchata oreo, and they cycle through flavors as well, so you'll always be enticed by new selections when you return. The scoops were absolutely delicious, light, and creamy. . The cones aren't housemade, but you can select a sugar cone or cake cone, classics that will stir your nostalgia for childhood Pricing: 5/5!!!!!!! The small size is $4, as pictured. They really pack it and give you a lot for your dollar which is RARE in LA. I love the value here. Parking: 5/5 Public lot street parking and residential parking nearby. You won't have to worry! You don't have to worry about the congestion, as this is Highland Park, and it's not nearly as congested as other hipster areas of LA.

Yelp
There are all kinds of fancy premium ice cream shops around town...some quite good...but to me, nothing beats Scoops! Fresh made ice cream, always some nondairy options (oat milk based, or sorbets) and a vast array of innovative flavors. Other places may have tasty toppings, but Scoops ice creams are so flavorful that they don't need any! If you want crunch, there are always flavors with nuts, peanuts, Oreo, or burnt sugar mixed in...sometimes cereal too. There's a whiteboard where you can suggest new flavors, and if you're lucky, Tai ("Mr. Scoops") might make your dream come true! Also, check out the mobile of giant ice cream spoons that finally migrated to Highland Park from the original location on Heliotrope. It's colorful and fun.

Yelp
Best ice cream place in the neighborhood. They change the flavors every week or even sooner. Craft ice cream and also cheaper than other places. Also they have the best staff. Very friendly and pleasant. I appreciate this place being in my neighborhood and am a regular.

tats b.

Yelp
Why charge for tasting flavors? What an alienating bizarre rule. Also, don't ask if I want to taste something, hand me it, and then after I don't want it, say you charge. Say it up front, if a customer asks. Better, just remove that anti-customer experience. Will make for a warmer, more welcoming experience. At the 2.00 you charge for tasting, into the cost of your ice cream. The one sorbet they had was pure sugar. What a bummer.

Yelp
Such a cute neighborhood ice cream shop. Stop in because of a local's recommendation. Very glad I did it was so good. Definitely worth stopping in. The ice cream is tasty and has a variety of tasty flavors. The service is great. The place is small and clean but has some benches to sit on or you can just take stroll through the neighborhood there are plenty of shops. Such a great and welcoming neighborhood.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream spot! Love their flavors -- tried almost all the flavors before ordering (yes, they do samples) and love that they have non-dairy options too so they're vegan friendly! They have interesting flavors and combinations. The owner was sooo nice and the place was nice and cute! Their prices are cheap compared to most ice cream places so this is really one of our go-to dessert places!
google avatar

Kristen T.

Yelp
Delicious as always and they started doing sampling again which is great! The guy behind the counter was friendly. I got the butter coffee and sea salt chocolate. The butter coffee was so delicious and flavourful, and I'm excited to have it again. The sea salt chocolate is good as always too! Will be back again soon.

Yelp
Great local spot in Highland Park! It was a pleasant surprise to see Scoops when I stopped in Highland Park for dinner. Really interesting flavors to choose from, but I wish they were doing samples. I wanted two different flavors and was able to get them in the kids size, which I really appreciated (can't beat the price there, either). The ice cream tasted a bit more like gelato and I wish it was a little more creamy, but it was definitely good and you could tell it was more homemade. Would go again if I was in the area!

Yelp
No samples at this time but the flavor was pretty good. Great value for price as well

Yelp
Scoops is my ultimate favorite ice-cream shop in Los Angeles. RIP to the Heliotrope location, where I initially discovered this gem of a place that stole my heart. (I'm not too much of a fan of the China Town one b/c they give you a skimpy scoop instead of a scoop full of love like they do here.) Located on the infamous York strip, so you can find easily as you're taking a walk to sight-see, eat, drink, and/or be merry. Please stop in and try their unique flavors that are changed on the daily, people!!! (Yes, a few vegan options are available.) Make sure to try the Brown Bread flavor that is the only one that remains loyal and always available. I love you, don't ever leave me Scoops! Love, Your obsessive girlfriend KLT

Yelp
I'm often baffled by how weak LA's ice cream game is given that the world knows us for sunshine and beaches. That being said, Scoops feels like an oasis in a desert (a dessert desert!). They may be one of the few ice cream shops around that don't offer samples, but the trade off is that they can sell split scoops for 4 bucks, which feels like an absolute steal in this economy. I don't think it's very helpful to describe individual scoops that I've had here since they're constantly switching out their flavors, but I will say that I've yet to find something here that has failed to put a smile on my face. Service has also consistently been fantastic as well. Shoutout to the worker who reopened the shop at 8:29 to let me and my friends order (it seems they have changed their closing time to 8 now).
google avatar

Darylynn D.

Yelp
I love Scoops!!! I miss the original location on Heliotrope near LACC. I never went to this location until recently. This location is their factory where all the ice cream flavors are made. They still have the same scoops set up I remember with the two freezers of ice cream flavors. Prices have gone up through the years as with everything else nowadays. The quality and service is always consistent. This trip I had the horchata Oreo and gen maicha. The best! I love how the flavor is consistent with every bite. Sometimes when having ice cream it is good the first few bites and halfway through the ice cream it's like the flavor has lost its luster. Scoops doesn't have that same type of feeling. It's good from the first scoop to the last.

Yelp
Flavors are GREAT, Price is GREAT and Portion is GREAT! I walked by the location in Chinatown several times but it was always closed... I was walking by and finally got to try the one in Highland Park and it was delicious! Maple Green tea. Spot on. I wanted to try the Black Sesame but they were all sold out.

Pattie E.

Yelp
I used to go to the original location near LACC over 8 years ago and loved the ice cream so much I followed to this location. It used to the BEST ice cream in town. I hadn't gone for over a year because it don't live close and was so disappointed! The ice cream was not creamy, like it used to be, but icy and grainy. The flavor of each ice cream was hard to detect and it all tasted the same. I'm not sure what happened, but I think the original owner probably sold it and it went to hell. Definitely will not be coming back. Ever.
google avatar

Crystal N.

Yelp
Don't sleep on the "brown bread" flavor, you will regret it. For the most unassuming flavor name, it was easily the tastiest ice cream scoop I have ever consumed. I love me a crunchy texture. Scoops has some interesting flavors to choose from and you are free to try them all! It helps narrow down which flavors I would like to commit to. I love the texture of the ice cream and the small size with 2 flavors is perfect to share between two people. There's some benches inside the shop but not much seating overall and no bathroom, so be aware. Scoops is a perfect dessert stop after eating around the area.
google avatar

Danny C.

Yelp
A little pricier than I would like for ice cream and far less selection, but you can't deny the quality of a great hand scoop on a hot Highland Park day. Service is great, and you can't beat crushed Oreos in malted vanilla. This isn't the most famous or most frequented creamery in LA, but it's not terrible. I hope they start giving samples again soon.
google avatar

Shweta B.

Yelp
I am always exploring ice cream spots around the greater LA area and found Scoops through Eater LA's curated list. I was pretty disappointed with the ice cream here. Both flavours were on the sweeter side and I was hit with a sugar rush on the first lick. I also thought it was pretty icy and I personally prefer my ice creams to taste creamy and milky. I will caveat that the quality matched the price I paid ($3.25 for a kid scoop). I would recommend Wanderlust if you're looking for good, unique flavours.
google avatar

Dani S.

Yelp
Came here to get dessert after lunch and the staff was rude! We walked in to get some ice cream and as usual I'm indecisive about what flavor I want. So I asked for samples and one of the staff there kind of gave me a dirty look and reluctantly gave me a small sample. After 4 samples he got progressively ruder and told me that they charge after 4 samples! Holy cow. I've never heard of this before! We ended up getting 2 scoops of 2 different flavors. The scoops were really small and melted really fast and it wasn't even a hot day. Overall unpleasant, I would not come back!

Nancy S.

Yelp
Scoops is amazing! The most creative flavors, the nicest proprietor ever (so patient with kids)...something for everyone here.
google avatar

Ernesto E.

Yelp
It's almost never open. But the ice cream is great. My favorite that I'll like to recommend is cookies and cream.
google avatar

Epic P.

Yelp
Amazing service, great ice cream, but not really any flavors for kids. I had also noticed in the last 3-4 times I have eaten there, the flavors are always different. Overall, great ice cream store.
google avatar

Keith H.

Yelp
Earlier during the COVID-19 pandemic, I was in Highland Park and had a hankering for some ice cream. I stopped at Scoops, and while there was a bit of a wait, I was happy with my visit. The employee working at the front was patient and welcoming, and they offer a wide variety of flavors (including non-dairy options). I have a been a fan of their Brown Bread since first going to Scoops Westside, so it was an easy choice. I ordered two pints, and I even received a small scoop to take with me on the house (possibly due to the wait). I love the sweet barley flavors of this ice cream, and having this ice cream at home was one of the nicer parts of staying at home.
google avatar

Sal P.

Yelp
Without a doubt, the best Ice Cream in LA. Try any flavor and you won't be disappointed! It is amazing how they keep up the quality and consistency. Best of all, you don't feel as heavy after like you would eating most other ice cream! Always recommend Scoops to my friends!
google avatar

Astrid M.

Yelp
Always worth the drive Pistachio fig. Lavander. I may try the vegan options next time.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
People. It's National Ice Cream day - why you getting vegan donuts (sorry, Donut Friend, this isn't about you) when you can have ice cream?? Haven't been back to Scoops in a while but glad I grabbed a cone for a walk around the neighborhood. I got the Horchata Oreo and Vanilla Miso Burnt Sugar - a little too sweet for the boyfriend but definitely creamy milky and addicting for me! I'd favor the horchata Oreo just because it had more texture but if like anything like sea salt caramel the miso hits the spot. Boyfriend went for the yuzu basil sorbet. So good! If you're a fan of the frozen lemons cups, this is even better! Definitely want to try the oat milk options next time. They don't do samples anymore for Covid reasons and only allow for 4 people at time but they are also having a good sale - buy one get one pint half off! Get to it.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Save yourself from the Donut Friend line and grab some ice cream. Scoops has really unique, delicious flavors! The strawberry lychee is DIVINE but if you're into other flavors, my boyfriend really enjoyed the maple oreo. Depending on how busy it is, you might have to wait for a hot second so people can try some flavors, but I know you appreciate the samples as well so you wait and you're patient.
google avatar

Henry L.

Yelp
Scoops is a gem of an ice cream store. I've tried brown bread, whiskey, and maple matcha and I was delighted by its soft creamy texture and airy flavor note that nicely accompanied the vanilla base. The price was amazing too. The small cup was under 4 dollars, which could be split into two flavors. An amazing deal for someone who is used to paying 5-6 dollars a cup - which let's be honest is overpriced. Scoops is much like that hole in the wall, mom and pop store with an honest price!
google avatar

Karolina N.

Yelp

Yelp
I feel bad that Scoops is right next to Donut Friend because you can tell which one is way more popular than the other. I was happy though since Scoops had no line and I was craving ice cream for a dessert. They had a good amount to select from but the flavors were not amazing. I ended up having to settle because I could not find a flavor that was much better than the others. This is the first ice cream place I have ever gone to where I actually disliked more than one flavor that I tried. I got the kids scoop in a cone and it was more than enough ice cream. I would probably go to a different ice cream shop next time, but it was still enjoyable.
google avatar

Ted C.

Yelp
So sad that the original location is gone, but apparently all the production and R&D is here anyways. While there are a ton of fancy ice cream shops around with more off the beaten path flavors, Scoops is still doing their thing and does it well. They have a lot more Oat Milk/Vegan options which takes up about 30-40% of their daily selections. I haven't tried those, but their actual ice cream flavors are still really good. My last visit I had the green tea and the Thai iced tea. Service was really friendly, definitely far more patience than I would have with people wanting to try ALL of the flavors, but that's part of the reason to come here. The flavors rotate and you want to be certain of your choice, the guy behind the counter was cheerful and great with trying to juggle everyone's different demands. The ice cream is as good as I remember it. What's not to like about well made ice cream?
google avatar

Angela C.

Yelp
A wonderful small ice cream place with rotating, imaginative flavors on one of the most hip streets in Highland Park! Now accepting credit cards! With one permanent flavor (brown bread - delicious and always a good choice, light vanilla flavor, small bread crumbles throughout) (that I know of), and the rest rotating, it's always a pleasure to drop in after dinner or just because. The ice cream is beautifully sticky (I love that first scoop with the little spoons and marveling at how the ice cream clings to it, so inviting!) and luxurious, lightly sweet, good amount of creaminess, not too "heavy". Our most recent visit, we ordered the "1 scoop" which includes two actual scoops / flavors; nice for a refreshment for two! We got the strawberry balsamic vinegar and the malted burnt sugar, a wonderful combination. The strawberry has the classic fruit flavor, and the balsamic flavor is just enough to give the fruit flavor a zingy punch! Malt burnt sugar has little globs of the burnt sugar ribbons throughout, has a nice deep caramel flavor. Vegan options available, sorbets too! Nice to grab a little cone or cup and eat inside on the benches or wander outside to stroll and people-watch.
google avatar

FreedomFries T.

Yelp
Best ice cream in the area. Always just the right level of creaminess. They may not have the "sophisticated" flavors that others have. Like Olive Oil-Rose Water-Oregano-Fig. But who actually enjoys that crap anyway? The flavors here are genuinely yummy.

Niki K.

Yelp
this ice cream shop is darling. Owner is lovely and the ice cream is well made. Good mix of super creative flavors and classics. We come here a lot and are super happy we have this place on york As we are always at the playground in walking distance. One of my favorite neighborhood ice cream spots in LA.
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
A lovely neighborhood ice cream shop. Love coming here with our toddler after dinner on York.
google avatar

Robin Y.

Yelp
Dropped in because my boyfriend felt like having ice cream while we were in the HLP area. I was pleasantly surprised!! He chose the taro butterfinger which was delicious-consistency was right on as it didn't melt too fast, flavors were fresh and rich. Loved it and can't wait to be back to try their other interesting flavors like HK milk tea and matcha hazelnut!!
google avatar

Karlo G.

Yelp
3.0 Their Ice cream is not the same from what it was a few years ago! It taste more like an Icy than a creamy ice cream texture... in addition all the flavors start to taste the same. I cannot differentiate the nuances or distinct flavors that should be present in the different ice creams they have.
google avatar

Shalea K.

Yelp
Scoops serves up unique and delicious ice cream flavors, both vegan and (mostly) non-vegan. I tried the burnt sugar sake ice cream and the vegan green tea peanut butter. The sake flavor was subtle and creamy, the green tea pb was very flavorful but had an icy texture. Flavor-wise, both were delicious! I hope in the future they offer more vegan flavors with creamier textures. However, I do appreciate that they use oat milk for the vegan ice cream! The shop itself is cute and clean and the staff is helpful and very kind. Ample street parking is available: meters, paid lots, and neighborhood. The shop is located right next to Vegan Friend, so grab a donut and slap on a delicious scoop from Scoops. I would happily recommend Scoops over LA's many uniquely flavored, artisanal ice cream shops -- Scoops is simply down to earth and delicious.

Tatiana C.

Yelp
So good! The flavors are so unique, I tried like 4 of them and they were all so delicious I ended up getting all four flavors in pints. They do two flavors in one pint so super worth it. They ended up giving me a baby scoop for free after, really kind folk! :)
google avatar

Franklin M.

Yelp
What can be better than a scoop of home made ice cream after having dinner. I love how these small shops specialize in unique flavors you won't find at Rite-Aid or the local supermarket. They also have vegan flavors available but I ordered the regular cream Butterscotch Oreo which was delicious.
google avatar

Taylor S.

Yelp
Amazing vegan Rocky Road! Decently priced for a local, handmade ice cream joint, the Red Velvet Oreo is simply blissful! Parking can be a bit frustrating, but then again so is most of LA! It's well worth the stop to try this place at least once!
google avatar

Pierre C.

Yelp
Tried the brown bread bc it tastes like bread dipped in milk... The first cold comfort food the brought me back to my childhood having mini sandwiches and milk lol. First time to see this flavor and it was worth trying. They definitely have other cools flavors to try, but something just drew me to this one. Thanks scoops for the fun flavor!
google avatar

Jonathan N.

Yelp
Here's the scoop on Scoops. It's a small chain ice cream shop with another location in the Los Angeles Chinatown plaza serving up some out of the ordinary and spectacular flavors you don't see every day. You're met with friendly service as you try some amazing flavors like raspberry lychee, banana matcha, and my go to favorite of brown bread in case I ever feel so indecisive that I need to default to a classic. All their scoop prices are fairly reasonable too, I'd say even below the LA standard fare which is also another neat plus in my book. Check them out if you're in the area!
google avatar

Denis S.

Yelp
Sesame coconut ice cream is genius. Whoever came up with it should win a Noble prize. For chemistry maybe? They might need to create an entirely separate category for this one
google avatar

Meena N.

Yelp
Long long line at donut friend. Was not crazy about going here but I was pleasantly surprised. We got the Bread pudding with sea salt chocolate. Nice size scoop for $4.99. Not real bread pudding but I think it worked well with the ice cream.
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
First visit to Scoops and it was Sweet Goodness. The sun had peeked out in the afternoon and ice cream was on the agenda. Found metered street parking. Its squeezed between Town pizza & Donut Friend on York. Very basic shop w/cushioned benches on the side to enjoy your ice cream. Note: CASH only & NO bathrooms. Friendly Service. Unique flavors. I tried a sample of the Brown Bread and Lemon Cheese Cake Burnt Sugar. Both were sweet, but I went with the Lemon Cheese Cake, because it had a slight tart taste that offset the sweetness. You can get a cup or a cone. Sat on the benches at first, but then decided to stroll York. I'll have to go back and get a scoop of the Brown Bread.

Yelp
It was a hot day so we ran in to get something cold. Got roasted corn and hazelnut matcha - it was surprisingly delicious!!!! Especially the corn.
