The Best Restaurants Around Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO), According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Although San Luis Obispo now has many third-wave coffee shops, Scout Coffee still stands out among the pack with its consistently great brews and pastries to pair. Founded by Jon and Sara Peterson in 2014, Scout uses beans from its own coffee roaster, HoneyCo Coffee Roasters. All the classics here are well-executed, like macchiatos, Americanos, and the simple drip coffee. Scout also sells bags of beans to take home." - Rebecca Roland

Scout Coffee Review - San Luis Obispo - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"One martini led to four martinis and before you knew it you were stumbling out of The Madonna Inn at 2:15am with a soy bean engineer’s number in your phone. Now it’s the morning after and you need a good cup of coffee and some bread. Scout Coffee is far and away our favorite coffee shop in San Luis Obispo. Every coffee bean is grown and roasted right in SLO and their house-made pastries are also tremendous (get the almond croissant)." - Brant Cox

Creative and delicious baked goods, carefully crafted espresso drinks, and clean satisfying drip “filter” coffee. Reasonable prices compared to some of the other shops in SLO I visited. Rarely do I dish out 5 stars across the board, but this place earns it. I first tried to stop at their location on campus which looked like trying to get into Walmart on Black Friday. Glad I came down to their location town. Got a raspberry dark chocolate scone and some sort of sugar roll. I am a bakery lover, home baker and thought both were delicious.

Google
Scout coffee is a famous coffee chain with this been their second location (locals called it Scout 2) and it is always a must stop for alumni Located in the same plaza as rite aid, near campus many students come here and visit to study with hipster vibes in the background. Their drinks are amazing with cool latte art on it. Would recommend the honey lavender latte or if you’re feeling not coffee their honey tea bowl is also really good. They have an assortment of pastries as well and I would recommend their almond croissant! Parking is plenty in the lot and plenty of tables but might be hard to get as this place is bustling

Google
Really cute coffee spot! Get a little crowded so it can be hard to find a table to study. I got a honey tea bowl with coconut crème tea!!

Google
Went here for a coffee and croissant. Guest off the line was long but the people working where three girls one at the cash register while the other two where working on making drinks. Girl at the cash register was great however didn’t even offer to warm up my croissant so it tasted cold and not good. And the drink took over 10 mins to get because the girls making the drinks didn’t seem to care and where moving at the Pace of a snail and drinking there own drinks with no sense of urgency or care for the customers piling and waiting. My drink wasn’t even that great. Not worth the wait. Probably would have been better if the staff actually seemed to care about providing better customer service.

Google
This is my favorite Scout location. Plenty of parking in the plaza and the surrounding area. There are lots of good things in the surrounding plaza and across the street too. This location is very close to the campus and is almost always busy. There lots of space inside and out and the staff is very friendly and can handle the high volume. We got a cheddar and bacon scone , blueberry muffin, matcha Latte, woodlands latte. The cheddar scone was awesome and the muffin was good as well. Matcha was good but slightly milky in flavor. The Almond milk latte I got was their Homemade woodlands flavor. It was a mix of maple , citrus and Douglas Fir. Like as in the tree. I know it sounds crazy, but it was actually subtle and pleasant. I enjoyed the flavor all the way to the bottom of the cup. I also went there another day for a winter seasonal and got the maple and sea salt latte which was great as well. This is my most favorite location and will keep coming back for more.

Google
There are mixed feelings about Scout’s coffee. They have great options for those who love their lattes and tea bowls. They have in house made Almond milk and syrups. Their Honey Tea bowl flavor options are great, too. But the coffee can often taste too acidic for my liking. The location is always full and can feel very loud. There is always a line to wait for your order so unless you’re not in a hurry and you are just grabbing and leaving this is a place you can grab a cup of coffee. Oh, their pastries are always tasty.

Google
Solid coffee shop with great coffee, vibes, pasties and merch! Went today and tried some stuff. Out of what we got, they had a great hot vanilla latte and hot chocolate. For real, the hot chocolate...get it. You won't regret it. The pastry selection was amazing. Tons of selection and they can heat the pastry . I loved the morning bun. Perfectly flaky, a slight chew to the dough, and tossed in a cinnamon sugar mix. Not too sweet in my opinion. The savory chives scone was also really good, I was pleasantly surprised. I would definitely go again. There are a ton of seats and the natural light from all the windows is beautiful. It gets really busy around 9am. So for those who want to work and chill, get there early. They open 6:30am-6:30pm.

Google
Nice bright and airy cafe with plenty of seating and college kids working on their laptops. A tad bit too much retail merchandising for my taste, but damn good coffee! The best pour over coffee I had out of three cafes I tried. The scones were also excellent! I'd go there everyday if I could.

Yelp
When we were traveling to San Luis Obispo over the weekend, Scout Coffee was a college staple for my friend and I a few years ago. It looked almost the exact same as it did the first time I visited--modern, clean, and sophisticated but also cozy with minimal colors. I love the primarily white color scheme! My friend and I ordered one pastry each and at least one drink. Everything came out relatively quickly despite the long lines (~5-6 minutes!). I went a bit all out and got two almond milk iced lattes: matcha and a decaf! The chocolate banana cake, while decadent (it took me nearly all day to finish), was DELISH and so fluffy. 10/10 love this spot for any SLO trip!

Yelp
It's definitely a cute place. Lots of merch, in fact, my $58 Scout sweater is one of my faves. But maybe skip the $19 wooden spoon Made in China The coffee is acidic. If you love true European espresso, what you'll get here is gross. I couldn't drink it. I come here twice a year when passing through town, every single time without fail, they're overstaffed with lackadaisical employees who will make everyone else's drink then suddenly remember yours after you expire and stare at the counter with dead eyes. 3 out of 4 staff members are polishing things and existing in peaceful ignore-everyone bliss. I will never forget how bad the espresso is now that they've established a clear pattern of not caring about their customers.

Yelp
Came here today with my husband to get our morning coffee. The place is a shopping center. So you have great parking. It is a very nice coffee shop with lots of seating areas. Which were mostly taken my students on their laptops. I guess it makes sense since it's situated across the street from a college. We were able to find a table outside so we can drink our coffee. We ordered a hot vanilla bean latte and it was very good. They have a wide selection of pastries, we got a pumpkin muffin and it was very tasty. I would come back if ever in San Luis Obispo again.

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - My daughter used to be a regular here, probably on a daily basis... Simple menu done well. Today we got the following, all of them were good. Honey Tea Bowl. Americano - My daughter ordered for me; it was just okay. Vanilla Bean Latte - Decaf, my daughter's drink; not sure why people order decaf... Ginger Molasses Cookie - A bakery in San Leandro is our favorite. Lemon Pistachio Shortbread - My daughter's regular cookie. Sunshine Bun - Amazing. My wife's order. It was fluffy like a croissant and the orange zest on top was a nice touch. BTW - All baked goods are baked daily in-house. Atmosphere - Almost always a long line in the morning. Good size location. Clean organized bathroom. Open 7 days a week from 6:30am to 6:30pm. Service - Counter service. Price - $26, reasonably priced for all that we got. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2014 with your 3 locations.

Yelp
I needed to move out of slo after living there for 5 years and every time I pass through I stop here. Their beans are exceptional for at home espresso. The pastries are lovely, the staff are always friendly. They are busy and there's a good reason for it. I love all the merch and things to look at in store. The seating is great if you're looking to get work done, catch up with friends, or enjoy a quite bite and leave. 10/10 would recommmend to a friend.

Yelp
This place is a SUPER vibe. My buddies came here and always adored this coffee spot. coffee: i got a vanilla latte as the standard and man it is super smooth. I always notice the top tier places make something super basic feel like a top tier drink. i got to try the whisky and raw sugar syrup coffe my homie got to try. So good! ambiance: beach life, open windows, plenty of college kids and people working throughout the day. I would work here for sure. it can get super busy even towards the latter part of the day.

Yelp
How did we not go here sooner?? The cutest local coffee shop we've found in SLO when me and my husband visit. The matcha is delicious and I love that I can get it in my reusable cup from their store, added cuteness. My husband loves his espressos. We went here nearly everyday of our trip and it's sweet to see how busy it is with college students. Also important to add, very kind workers :)
google avatar

Yelp
What makes Scout Coffee fun is the ambience and student who hang out here. There's a long table of people to plug in their laptops and do their homework. I love this because it makes students feel comfortable with hanging out here for longer periods of time. The menu of coffee, tea and other drinks is extensive. The bakery items look fresh made but we didn't try them. We were on our way to the beach for breakfast. Scouts is a great place to stop on the way to the beach especially for those who get coffee on their way to wherever...

Yelp
One of the places in slo with good matcha lattes! Their matcha is more on the milky side and it tastes pretty smooth. I also enjoy the variety of pastries that they offer (sweet and savory). The staff are nice and there are a lot of indoor seating spots however if you are there to study/do work, they do not have outlets to charge your devices. They sell cute trinkets and gifts in then front of the store and their decor has a cozy aesthetic.

Yelp
I don't drink coffee, at all. But I do like hot chocolate. This was the most amazing hot chocolate I've ever had! Had a croissant that was really good! The only negative is that it took a long time to get, but it was definitely worth the wait!
google avatar

Mahi G.

Yelp
My brother and I came here a couple of days ago and got a wilderness latte and a vanilla latte. The wilderness latte was great! I think the vanilla needed a little more sweetness/syrup. We also got the blueberry almond croissant and the jalepeno cheddar croissant, both of which were great. They even warmed them up for us. It was busy when we went so there was a little bit of a wait for the coffee, but otherwise the service was quick. I liked that they had a good amount of seating options as well! The place was lively but not too loud/chaotic.

Yelp
Cute place! Love the open, chilled out environment. So spacious which is good because it gets BUSY. Staff was fine, not over good or bad! Drinks were alright, I did a matcha-wish I did a coffee instead but oh well. It wasn't my favorite but also not bad. Croissant was yum! Would definitely come back-for coffee ;)
google avatar

Brooke B.

Yelp
I am a sucker for the wilderness latte, which is funny because I actually have an allergy to pine. We can call it exposure therapy, but seriously it isn't overpowering and before you scoff at the flavor, try it. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Cherish K.

Yelp
I'd go back for the Morning Bun alone. Haven't had a pastry soo good since Italy! The black tea was brewed perfectly. We also tried the Sunshine & Whiskey both were delicious. This spot is definitely a must when you're in SLO. The service was excellent & informed. Not going to lie, I also had to buy a cute SCOUT hat. Gotta promote small business all while looking cute :)

Erin M.

Yelp
Their matcha is not very good. I have to get a flavor or something in it to be able to drink it. The pastries though are good! None of the baristas are very nice and barely acknowledge your presence.
google avatar

Libby O.

Yelp
I love the addition of ordering online, they had my drinks ready on time and tasted great. I recommend the Honey Tea Bowl for a warm drink. The iced teas are also refreshing but a little light on flavor. Baristas and cashiers are always friendly. Hit or miss on how packed it is but we went during the summer on a weekend and it wasn't too packed. I love how much natural lighting this location has.
google avatar

Charles S.

Yelp
The coffee here is great! The place is kept clean and they get you your order in a timely manner. This is my coffee spot whenever travel to the coast. Thank You

Yelp
Been going to this particular scout location for years and love this space! Wish there were outlets so make sure you charge your device before heading over. The drinks made here are always delicious and baristas are super welcoming! A must visit when you are in SLO or need a spot to study!
google avatar

Yelp
Scout is the cutest coffee shop. Perfect for grabbing a quick coffee, pastry or studying! It is a very popular spot for a reason. Their pastries are all incredible, my favorites so far are the oat raspberry bar and banana muffin. Their coffee is also amazing and the staff is so friendly!
google avatar

Anjana T.

Yelp
Whilst going to school here during undergrad, this core shop would be my go-to for a quick dose and a place to do work. The baristas were nice and took their time with making the drinks. Every time I go to SLO, I make it a point you stop here for a latte and the infamous scout cookie. They are a must have, no doubt! The other pastries there are also very good and always fresh!

Yelp
Scout Coffee has been a favorite of ours when we attended Cal Poly a number of years back. Since we last visited them, they have an on campus location and a downtown location, but our favorite location is on Foothill. Our go-to drink orders are: - Iced vanilla bean latte with oat milk - Cappuccino - Hot latte w/o flavoring We didn't pick up any pastries during this last visit of ours, but they have a great selection of tasty items that will pair nicely with any drink.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing coffee. Ever since I tried their VANILLA BEAN LATTE I've been coming here almost every day! Their matcha latte is delicious as well. The coffee (and home-made syrups!) is super flavorful and high-quality. It really stands out compared to other coffee shops I've been to. When I graduate from Cal Poly I'll definitely be stocking up on their beans!
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Great coffee shop. Lots of seating. A small store front inside featuring some of their branded merchandise including mugs, tees, bags, etc. Friendly staff. Attention and care given to each coffee order. A wonderful place for your caffeine needs.
google avatar

Sam R.

Yelp
The pastries and food is good but the coffee is very inconsistent for me. Sometimes I'll have a great coffee and other times I can barely drink it. Cute cafe and good service though.

Yelp
A local favorite for all occasions Drinks: There are 3 perfect drinks! Sparkling Hibiscus Cooler Tea, Iced Americano and the glorious Vanilla Bean Latte. Sparking Hibiscus Cooler Tea is refreshing, very natural, and fizzy kick with the sparkling water touch. It has a small hint of sweet tart, which I do prefer over the Happy Sparkling Tea. Americano Connoisseurs this is your place. I love their espresso beans and only place I get my Americanos. You know good espresso by just consuming espresso shots and water. Iced Americanos pair well with any of their baked items; a balance of tastes. Iced or Hot Vanilla Bean Latte has my entire heart. For years and to this day, I refuse to get a vanilla latte, but this is far from basic. Their homemade syrup is yummy and no artificial aftertaste. An unmatched vanilla latte with their homemade almond milk! The raw sugar and whiskey is my second option of a flavored latte to mix things up, but their vanilla bean is too good to resist. I had the Honey Lavender latte once and it was not yummy. Mochas and matchas are okay. I have had their mochas and matchas before and there are inconsistencies based on who makes them, definitely stick to the vanilla latte if you want some sweet espresso drink. Desserts: their bakery items are always fresh and fun to try a new one every time. My favorite is the Dark Chocolate Zucchini Muffin, which is both vegan and gluten free so a double bonus! The Lemon Pistachio Shortbread is the best cookie getting butter and nutty. The Lemon Poppyseed Muffin was more on the sugary side, but I appreciate the zesty lemon and poppyseed combo. Environment: This is the best Scout location in SLO. The drinks and bakery items always taste better and fresher. I love the variety of seating and big tables to do work. If you are studying, it's located by Lassens or Neighborhood Acia so you can grab a quick bite in the middle of studying. The only reason I don't come here everyday is because they have zero electric plugs to charge your computer or devices. Just charge up your computer before coming and the WiFi is dependable/fast Service: everyone always has a warm smile and welcoming demeanor. Quick to take orders and help with any additional things needed. More professional and friendly than the DT location forsure Overall: To die for vanilla bean latte With homemade almond milk!! Must try any of their bakery items, which is complimented greatly by their Iced Americanos!! But if you want a matcha defiantly get that at Field Day!
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Super cute coffee shop with a TON of merch and local artisanal earrings and decorative items. I've had their affogato, which was good, but when is affogato not good? I had their sparkling tea today and I wasn't a fan. Prices are super good, as is the service, which is probably why this place gets packed! Unfortunately as someone with celiac disease there isn't any foods here that I could eat as far as I noticed, but if that isn't your issue, they have a large pastry case.
google avatar

Yelp
I come here every weekend with my mom. Best coffee I've had in SLO since I moved here 2 months ago. Also love their matcha!

Kathy X.

Yelp
Incredible hot oat latte. Oh my gosh. Literally put a smile on my face after first sip and made my drive back home so enjoyable.

Ceara S.

Yelp
I do not recommend this place to get a nice drink and get going. Baristas are constantly chatting with one another instead of doing their job and getting orders done quickly (and there are a lot of baristas on the clock at once). I have ordered the chai tea twice now and been disappointed each time. It has a weird taste to it and I asked them what they put in it and they said just vanilla and milk but it does not taste like it. It is absolutely rancid and if you are looking to get a chai, you will probably end up throwing it out like how I did. Other than that, my friends seem to enjoy the coffee. The chocolate banana bread I ordered was good but I would have enjoyed it even more if it were warm. I'm not sure they warm anything, but they should. Hope this helps.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered a Gibraltar. Waited about 5 min. Drove to Deltina about a mile away, got a cappuccino, drove back to scout. Waited another 5 min and then my name was called. Don't expect speed. Coffee was just ok.

Yelp
It's all the above in a coffee house. It's cool, comfy, vibrant, fantastic! It's even magical to me the way all is displayed. To continue celebrating the Holidays I'm sipping, oh so deliciously, on a TANGERINE CINNAMON LATTE. Perfection in a hot coffee drink. Have been patronizing SCOUT COFFEE for over 6 years. Still absolute sipping enjoyment to me. Hot or Cold! A lil jingle for you today - Some like it hott ah Some like it cooold Some like it everydayyy I LIKE IT ALL

Yelp
This is a great spot in SLO to get a good cup of joe. The baristas are always incredibly pleasant and I like the vibe and well lit, open interior. The two locations I frequent are always packed and for good reasoh
google avatar

Saemlinh I.

Yelp
This coffee was a huge letdown. My latte was bitter in such a way that the roast just seemed poorly tempered. And my wife's decaf americano was surely chemically washed. A huge letdown with all the talk of being SLO's best. Service was negligible s as well. But the interior design was cute, so that'll get people in the door.

Yelp
Scout Coffee is such a fun café. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and so lively. All of the employees were super nice and it showed that they truly enjoyed their jobs. I had a golden mylk latte and it was incredible! I sipped it slowly because I wanted to savor every ounce of that latte. I can't stop thinking about how good it was. The husband got a butterscotch latte and he also raved about it but he slurped it down like a Nascar driver. Scout is on the top of my list of all-time favorite coffee shops and I will become a regular here. 10/10!!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm in love with this charming coffee shop! Located right by the Cal Poly campus is packed with students and young people, it definitely has a lively vibe. On a weekend morning, the line snaked out the door, but it was worth the wait - gorgeous interior, displays of home decor and artisan goods (shirts, earrings, candles) on sale inside, and quality breakfast goodies. We tried two hot drinks and a goat cheese-leek scone. First of all, I'm not usually a scone fan but the flavor sounded delicious. I was pleasantly surprised that it was delicious and now I plan to try my hand at baking some myself. The drinks were also good, had a "wilderness" latte (Douglas Fir, maple, citrus) -- sounds interesting, tastes good. They also had a featured vanilla-matcha latte that was also really good. Worth waiting in line for!

Yelp
This is a really nice shop, and the coffee is really good. They also have various food items and different knick knacks The atmosphere is also wonderful. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Visited SLO from SF for the weekend and was in desperate need of an iced latte. So glad we found this place - the lattes we got were yum and decor was so cute. We ended up coming back all 3 days over the weekend - even though this location is smaller than the other one, this one feels more cozy and the location is right in the center of downtown. Our group also got a hoard of pastries, highlights were: - vanilla shortbread cookie (10/10): buttery perfection - banana walnut muffin (10/10): moist moist moist - vegan gluten free chocolate banana bread (9/10): dense and moist, doesn't taste vegan! - fig oat bar (4/10): way too sweet - chocolate croissant (5/10): a bit too airy and not enough chocolate - citrus roll (4/10): dry dry dry - chocolate blueberry scone (8/10): crumbly and moist at the same time - how did they do it?? Only complaint is that the service could've been a bit faster since we ended up being late for a meeting, but I guess good things take time
google avatar

Yelp
This place is super cute and cozy !! Very nicely decorated and friendly staff. I'm a bit of a coffee noob so I just asked what's most similar to a caramel macchiato and the cashier nicely recommended either their seasonal flavored lattes or thru vanilla bean latte. I chose the latter with oat milk substitution and it was delicious fast service too It was a quick pit stop for me but if I lived closer I'd definitely try their pastries too!
google avatar

Brenna G.

Yelp
Mixed feelings about scout. Love the ambiance of all the college kids there my age studying or hanging out with friends, but because of that, it's super hard to find seats. I've only tried their iced cinnamon latte, which was pretty good, but not as good as other places because it was kinda watery?? Super cute place though with nice workers

Yelp
I am sad to find out about this coffee shop on my last day in SLO, that just showed how memorable the coffee was for me! I even bought some beans from here and hoping to make my own espressos as well. Scout Coffee can easily be one of the top 10 coffee shop for me and I am from San Francisco (tried many coffee here). First impression of the shop was that it has such a warm/relaxing atmosphere and extremely spacious. I loved the interior decoration as well, it was mostly white and wood tone which is probably why I felt relaxed being there. I know that Cal Poly is nearby and they provide wifi and lots of single/ group seating spaces for students to just chill/study there. Even though they were quite busy, the baristas were kind enough to let me know what kind of bean was used for their latte and pour over. The vanilla bean latte that I got was chef kiss!! That first sip of the drink was the reason why I wanted to buy the beans. The vanilla bean flavor was also very strong but I would preferred it to be a bit less sweet so I could taste the espresso more. Overall, the latte was incredible and I wanted a second cup afterward. Their pour over was also really nice, not too acidic but rather a pleasant fruity flavor. I believe that the barista told me that it was a mixture of beans that they used to make the pour over. If I ever do stop by SLO again, Scout Coffee would be a must for me from now on~~

Yelp
Always a go to when we come to SLO! Our order: my husband gets a regular coffee with cream, and I get the honey tea bowl ($4.50). Pros: - Delicious drinks. I know the honey tea bowl sounds ridiculously priced, but it's so unique and so delicious. It's honestly better than any boba you've paid $4.50 for. - My husband said the regular coffee was also delicious - Super fun merch inside that you can browse while waiting for coffee (standard hipster stuff) - Lots of tables outside to chill and talk, great first date place - Really efficient and kind service - Very aesthetic - nice study vibes, first date vibes, or coffee marriage date vibes

Yelp
Always a favorite!!! They have great coffee, great flavors, and good pastries. They also have great little things for sale like mugs and tea towels!

Yelp
Best Oat Milk Latte in SLO and great pastry love the desserts!!! Really like the staff always friendly and courteous! One Downtown SLO on Garden and another off Foothill in SLO ! The One on Foothill is large with indoor and outdoor seating and much easier parking. Great Comfortable Ambiance. Lots of goodies to pick up and take home to enjoy. The Best Coffee! Best Treats ! Enjoy !

Yelp
I came here for the first time in 2019, and I'm glad to see it still exists post-covid! It was Saturday morning, so it was pretty busy inside even at 11 AM. We ordered our drinks to go. The cappuccino was very creamy and tasty. The standard is 2 shots, whole milk and some foam art. Everything can be adjusted though. My wife tried the sparkling iced tea but said she didn't care for it. Don't come to the SLO area often but would come back if I did!

Yelp
Favorite coffee shop in SLO. Have great food as well! The chia seed pudding is amazing.

Yelp
Cute cafe that offers a wide selection of coffee, pasties, beans and merch! Got their iced 12oz americano and enjoyed the cup to the last sip. Strong flavors all around and gave me that perfect high ;) The ambiance is relaxing and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating to chat up with friends, work and to enjoy that cup of joe. Prices are fairly standard for a third wave establishment and parking here is a breeze. Located in a plaza, there is ample parking and free wifi that is password protected.

Great joint for iced mocha and regular mochas. The chocolate chip cookie was the bomb. The negatives about this place, they're slow. Plus the mocha was lukewarm and not hot as expected. Still a great place for a cup and snack.
