Where to Find the Best Breakfasts in Portland

"Yes, many consider Screen Door a tourist magnet, but since the restaurant opened a new location in the Pearl, brunch has become more frequent, more consistent, and with nowhere near the wait. The classics — buttermilk fried chicken and sweet potato waffles, praline bacon, griddled brioche French toast with rum-flamed caramelized bananas — are all strong options here, especially when paired with a pickled-okra-topped bloody mary or a cold brew spiked with Crater Lake hazelnut vodka and Kahlua." - Zoe Baillargeon, Janey Wong, Rebecca Roland

Love! My family and I are mac & cheese connoisseurs and we all agree that this is the best mac & cheese we’ve ever tasted. The decor is adorable, including the lighting fixtures, wallpaper, mirrors. Service was great. We sat at the bar so we didn’t have to wait for a table. all of the pickled items on the appetizer menu were delicious. The atmosphere is fun and energetic without being too loud. highly recommend.

Google
Went with a group of 8 during a busy Saturday brunch. The waitstaff was patient while everyone arrived. Food-wise everything was great. I had the chicken and biscuits and it was perfect. Juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside even when smothered in sausage gravy. Forgot to get a pic of that because I was too excited to try it. Everyone at the table enjoyed their food as well!

Google
I ordered the candied bacon, quiche, and the huckleberry mule. The bacon was very hearty and delicious. The quiche was next level delicious. The salad that accompanied the quiche was well balanced with the various types of radishes. The service was great. I highly recommend this restaurant as the food is excellent and work staff is very attentive. As a bonus, they even have Uncle Nearest 1884 whiskey.

Google
Always great food. Wait times can be an issue, so make a reservation. Wait staff can be a bit b pushy. LOVE LOVE LOVE the chicken and waffles and the Chicken Fried Teak with Sausage Gravy.

Google
Best brunch place in Pearl district! Have been willing to visit this place since a very long time and finally made it 😅the fried Okras were delicious! This is a good appetiser to share for the table. Fried chicken and waffle was great as well. I loved the fried chicken and biscuits with Mushroom gravy. The gravy was creamy and mushrooms and biscuit was delicious. Pomegranate mimosa was my favourite among mimosas. Squash and Brussels scramble was also good.we also tried their creamy cheddar grits and it was just like described in the name.

Google
Screen Door is a must for my family, anytime we are in Portland. We travel from Idaho to Portland a couple times a year and we have to stop here every time. We go for dinner and brunch almost each time. The fried chicken dinner is amazingly incredible delish. Perfectly fried boneless chicken breast and thigh with collard greens and mashed potatoes! The Tasso gravy is the perfect addition to the meal. If you are going for brunch I recommend the fried chicken and biscuit breakfast with sausage gravy. My only complaint is they used to offer an amazing gumbo over rice, and it hasn't made it back to the menu since Covid :( Other than that, 10/10 would recommend.

Google
Food was good. The waffles have a mix of cinnamon within them so some may find it on the dryer side. Chicken had a plesant flavor to the fried bits. The building had nice colors which made the environment enjoyable. The praline bacon was nutty and tender at the same time.

Google
I rarely give 5 stars for food. Mostly, I experience a letdown when simple things are not done to the best possible outcome. The food here was authentic and properly prepared. We started with fried ocre, one of my favorites, and the portion was generous. I always try chicken fried steak because, apparently, it is a challenge to make. People do not understand gravy, and they certainly are challenged with the breading on the steak. The Screen Door has it right. I will suggest that this endless craze for home fried potatoes needs a reconsideration. Ehat has become of home fries done on a flat griddle? We also tried the quiche, and it was quite good, perhaps with too much bacn overwhelming the rest of the quiche? Service was prompt, and the food was good.

Yelp
Best fried chicken in Portland. No kidding. We have been going here for 15 years. What are you waiting for?

Yelp
Screen Door is perfect is you have a hankering for Southern Food as I often do. I'm not sure why their fried chicken is so revered. It's good, don't get me wrong, especially the dark meat, but it lacks the heat I desire. When the fried chicken is presented with red beans and rice it gets soggy. Service though was impeccable. Our waiter behaved as if we were in a Michelin star restaurant. Drinks are nothing that special although the cocktail menu is extensive. I want to like Screen Door, I really do want it to be a five star experience. Sadly the food is a notch below that.

Yelp
The atmosphere at Screen Door is the perfect blend of Southern hospitality and classic diner energy--an unexpected combo that works beautifully! Service was solid, even with how busy it was. Our server was handling multiple tables but still kept a great attitude, which we really appreciated. Now, the food? Absolutely delicious. We had the shrimp and grits and the bananas foster French toast--both were packed with flavor! If you get the French toast, I highly recommend adding a side of bacon to balance out the sweetness. All in all, an amazing experience. Definitely coming back for more!

Yelp
Pearl Eastside District is a super popular spot in Portland and while it was good it was not the best. We started with the hush puppies with pepper jelly which were solid. The mac and cheese tasted like Kraft which was disappointing. The deviled eggs were good but $9 for essentially one and a half eggs was wild. I ordered the fried chicken and it was actually great. My partner ordered the salmon which lacked seasoning and came with veggies that were oddly paired and undercooked. Ended with the cheesecake which was pretty good. Overall it was very pricey and those eggs were straight up laughable.

Yelp
I've dined here numerous times since I am lucky to be a neighbor to this iconic Portland brand in the Pearl. Full disclosure: I am a super fan of the original Eastside location. I find the decor and design of the Pearl location to strain too far from what I have in my head of the other location(s), but that could be the point here. So, I will let others decide and let the quality of the food and experience reign true Most of the time, I arrive knowing there will be a delay in seating due to popularity here. However, in my most recent jaunt here, I was delighted t be seated immediately at 10:00 am. I sat down, opened my book, and enjoyed several minutes with an espresso martini before ordering food. I have a habit of consistently ordering fried chicken and biscuits with mushroom gravy, but, on this occasion, I went diverse. I enjoyed the quiche, potatoes, and a side salad to keep the healthy vibes of January flowing. The team was talkative and attentive, and they always provided a good experience for me and other guests when folks were in town. I love being outside on the patio when the weather is better since finding brunch joints with outdoor spaces is weirdly rare in PDX. However, my espresso martini was not the best here. It was a little too sweet, and the coffee flavors were minimal. I would also love to see a coat check area since everyone in winter has difficulty sitting in tight areas with winter coats scattered everywhere. I would prefer to brunch elsewhere most of the time, since, I have had my fill of Screen Door. But, I will be here when friends come to town, since, it is of course, iconic. Great work always, team! You have the best staff in the Pearl.

Yelp
I have loved the Screen Door's east side location for over a decade and their Pearl location is also great. As far as I've eaten, the food quality is the same. On my latest Saturday evening trip here, I enjoyed a unique-to-Pearl Theatre dinner. It is a 2 course (start + entree) with optional desert (+$7) for $28. I got more appropriately sized portions for 1 and got to have deviled eggs that I normally wouldn't have had room for with their standard entree portion. Everything Screen Door makes is amazing. But I am a sucker for their fried chicken and brisket. Yelp is prompting me to talk about ambiance. I like the style they chose for the pearl, but when eating with a construction knowledgable person, he had no problem pointing out quality of the millwork and tile work. So we both wouldn't hire Screen Door to do or oversee a construction project. ;)

Yelp
We happened to drive by the day before and luckily when I was looking for a brunch place, it turned out to be The Screen Door! What caught my was eye as we were passing by was the packed patio and large bright yellow patio umbrellas and chairs. It was the weekend, and we didn't make reservations prior to arrival. It was completely packed inside and outside. Thankfully we didn't have to wait long. Seeing how busy it was we were glad to get seated fairly quickly. We got seated at the bar top near the front check in counter. We ordered the Chicken & Waffles with one piece of fried chicken. You can opt to have one, two or three pieces of fried chicken, each piece being 6oz! Looking at the pictures, it looked more than enough for us to share. I absolutely have to have some sort of potatoes so we added a side of breakfast potatoes. The waffles were different and not your typical batter, these were sweet potato waffles and absolutely delish with two servings of syrup. The fried chicken was perfectly battered, cooked and very juicy. The side of breakfast potatoes was a generous serving and was cooked well without having any overcooked pieces or anything that seemed previously frozen. We also tried their homemade lemonade, which was a perfect blend of sweet and tart. I absolutely love fried chicken, so this dish is usually at the top of my list off must tries, but Chicken and waffles is not my hubs favorite, but it's definitely growing on him! Sweet, savory and salty, hmmm...., what's not too love?! It was jam packed busy when we dined here, it's probably like this every weekend for brunch. Parking is street only, we got lucky and only parked a block away. Make sure you pay the kitty! Weekend brunch vibes, the staff was friendly, restaurant was clean, and of course great food! This place was so yummy! What a treat to have brunch here! Absolutely worth the wait and a try! 2025: 5

Yelp
This review is for a take-out order delivered via a second party. So here goes the good and the bad. Pros: Food was still warm when I received, as this was my expectation. Food was boxed individually for best taste. The catfish is crispy and very well seasoned. It is thin and provides perfect crunch. Try it. Get the hot sauce, they do charge 1.50 for a small cup. I will discuss later in my cons section. Cons: 1.50 for a cup of hot sauce. Smh. No option to sub the sauce that comes with the fish. This just feels greedy. It is hot sauce. Your customers are spending on average 30 plus dollars for an order. No silverware, no napkins and no place/comment box or other option to ask for it when ordering. I mean do you expect me to use my hands? Cinnamon rolls-Dry. Dry. They are not good. Huge but not good. I have had between store bought. These actually taste like they are not homemade. Grits-I am from the south, so I am possibly a little critical here. They were bland. So in all honesty, I will not eat here again. The three stars is simply for the fish.

Yelp
I was randomly exploring Portland when I stumbled upon this place on Yelp and had to check out for myself! This place is known for their chicken and waffles since they're made with sweet potatoes, and wow, definitely worth it! You should book a reservation if coming for brunch, and absolutely won't regret it. The atmosphere is very posh and pleasant, and service was prompt and polite. The cocktails are also very nice, I tried a seasonal pumpkin spice cocktail, which was just the right pick me up. Their espresso martinis also looked delicious! Definitely going back.

Yelp
Nice open space and very quiet during the week so was great for a ling dinner with friends. I usually go to the East side but same menu here. I had the chicken and dumplings which was very good as the dumplings were perfect not raw but still moist. My only issue is it costs the same as most entrees but has a very tiny amount of chicken. My friend gave me some of her chicken as I was still very hungry. I could order some chicken strips but then it would be a very expensive meal compared to the rest. All enjoyed their chicken and waffles or full chicken meal. They did have a good cider I don't remember seeing on the East side. Love they take reservations and not hard to park on a weekday at least.

Yelp
I can't remember the last time I had a breakfast this good! The bananas foster french toast was amazing. Soft and pillowy bread that's thick enough so it won't become soggy. The sweet caramelized bananas topping that paired well with the praline bacon. I just had to add the soft yet crunchy biscuit with a healthy helping of butter... The only fault is that they did not provide utensils, but the food was worth getting my hands dirty. OMG! I'm not going to forget about this meal for a long time.

Yelp
Had a great experience at Screen Door (Pearl District)! Made a reservation (highly recommend doing that), and everything went smoothly. The vibe is laid-back but lively. Ordered the $24 chicken tender plate and the $26 fried chicken dinner. Both were worth it! The portions are generous, and the flavors are on point. Service was quick, staff were super friendly, and the bathrooms were clean (always a plus!). Street parking is available, but depending on the time, it might take a few minutes to find a spot. Overall, solid spot for fried chicken and Southern comfort food.

Yelp
This is a classic breakfast spot in Portland. A must try for sure but it does get pretty busy. Make sure to get there early or make a reservation.

Yelp
Order: the southern chicken dinner meal w/ mash potatoes and greens. Also a side of mac and cheese Pros: I've had a taste for screen door for a while and I finally stopped in to grab dinner. The price was damn near $40 bucks for my meal (sheesh). Im from the south and can get 2 full meals plus dessert for these prices lawd. Anyways, The chicken was great the mashed potatoes were great and the greens were okay today. Listen, Ive been here before and I never had an issue with their food until today. Cons: so this is an instance of what I ordered vs. what I got. Usually in store you get what is in the picture that I posted. Mac and cheese with a nice cheese crust on top with garnish etc. the cheese crust usually comes over the side, which is how I normally get it. So today, I did a carry out-and checked to see that I had all my food. I didnt check the actual condition of the food because I never really had an issue in the past when ordering from them. This time I get home, and my mac & cheese look like I got it from KFC. I was so upset because I spent $7.50 for this mac & cheese, and it was not what I expected, nor did it look like the picture. I'm waiting on a refund which hasnt come yet. I was a little upset.

Yelp
My first visit to Screen Door in the Pearl District. Meet family from Ca and Portland to celebrate a dual birthday breakfast. The restaurant was very nice, and clean. Super busy! I wish they offered reservations because they're so popular. We were seated within the hour and had a wonderful breakfast and conversations. My go to was the Chicken and Waffle. Delicious Chicken, seasoned perfectly with a whole wheat waffle. My husband had the Cajun Scramble with a side of sausage gravy. Both dishes were delicious. We did share Praline Bacon at our table, it was a bit too sweet and there was no crunch to the bacon. Plan on leaving your name at the door and coming back in 40 minutes or more. Dress WARM!!!
google avatar

Yelp
It was so good!!!! We had the candied bacon as an app and they should just open a stand and sell the bacon it was so good. I got the chicken n waffles and wow delicious. I loved the sweet potatoes waffles and the chicken amazingly crispy and juice. They have house hot sauce that's nice vinegar base. I'd love to go back and try more items. The restaurant is busy but we were helped right away and the hist and waiter were so nice and friendly.

Yelp
Outstanding Portland Southern restaurant!! Stumbled upon it while visiting Powells bookstore. Saw great reviews and it did not disappoint. Service by Kelsey was attentive and friendly. She offered to get my husband's chicken and dumplings re-made when he discovered it was spicy unexpectedly. Once he got it without a dash of hot sauce, he loved the flavorful sauce and generous amounts of chicken and vegetables. I snitched some and loved the herbed dumplings. We started with light hush puppies. He claimed there was some heat, but I didn't notice. If you are sensitive to spicy, you may want to pass or ask for a modification. I loved the crispy fried chicken. Not greasy either. Excellent creamy mashed potatoes, rich tasty gravy and awesome collard greens with nice touch of vinegar. Indulged in the Lemon cheesecake that was creamy, but not super dense. Lovely tart lemon top and crunchy crust. Warm blueberry compote was extra touch of yumminess. Forgot to mention that sweet tea was on point too. Lastly, the ambiance and decor helped provide an overall comfortable and pleasant Southern dining experience. As my mama would say, I am fat, dumb and happy now.

Yelp
I tried their fried chicken and biscuits and shared an order of praline bacon. I want to preface with this statement - I don't particularly think this is the best breakfast I've ever had and not sure I'd go out of my way to visit screen door BUT is it a staple and am I going to drop by every time I plan to go to powell's books too? For sure. I don't think you can go wrong with the food. However, since I'm not a huge sweets fan, I wouldn't order the praline bacon again. It was way too sweet for my liking. But I can see people falling in love with that candied bacon flavor. Is it worth the wait on the weekend? Maybe if you plan to shop next to the Anthropologie next door while you wait for that text.

Yelp
Such a busy place for a weekday morning! We didn't have a reservation which the hostess asked us when we walked into the packed restaurant. Thinking we'd be turned away, we were pleasantly surprised when she sat us immediately. Our server was very experienced and kept things rolling at multiple tables. Our coffee and juices were kept up with and food arrived in a decent amount of time. I ordered the Fried Chicken and Biscuits; while my friend ordered the shrimp and grits. The shrimp and grits were absolutely delicious, and a plentiful portion. The Fried Chicken dish was also delicious and HUGE, unfortunately a tad to salty for me. We'd definitely come back and try other dishes in our next visit to Portland.

Yelp
Screen Door is our absolute favorite brunch place!! We bring all of our out-of-town guests here and they all enjoy it! There's always a wait time but we usually never wait longer than what we've been told. I'm always impressed at how quick we get seated. Honestly, anything you order will be delicious! The Sawmill Breakfast is usually a top choice for me, among others. This particular visit, I ordered the Blueberry Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and while I absolutely loved them(!) I wish there's something more with it. Some sort of savory dish, like eggs and bacon. I'd give them a 6/10. The Pulled Pork Benedicts were 10/10!!!!! It's probably going to be a usual soon! They typically come with potatoes but my partner decided to ask for fries instead and it was *chef's kiss*. If you enjoy breakfast and pulled pork, I strongly suggest trying this! Their staff is also super nice and extremely helpful when asking questions! I always enjoy going here and don't think there will be any brunch place that'll take its place any time soon!

Linda R.

Yelp
Food and service was excellent! Great cocktail and mocktail drinks. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
I was here on a 8 hour business tax write off trip to buy every electronic possible but this was the only place I wanted to eat at. 1st time at this pear location.... This shhhh was either no brunch spots hit this hard in the SF Bay Area or I just never want breakfast as bad as I want this place. I sat at the bar, the place is nice inside, the bartender was dope. I don't know but this place serves the best breakfast in the United States lmao

Yelp
I went to the other screen door location a few years ago and have been wanting to visit this one for quite a while now. my friend wanted to go for her birthday dinner so a group of eight of us came on a Sunday night around 7 PM. we were seated promptly and greeted warmly. we got our menus and were able to order pretty quickly although we were chatting a lot so it took us a little while to figure out what we wanted. I ordered the two piece chicken and waffles. A friend ordered the hush puppies and I tried one and I honestly didnt like it. it's expensive cornbread with sweet-and-sour sauce. The chicken and waffles arrived with an orange slice and syrup. The chicken itself was cooked perfectly. Although I would've liked to have a little bit more salt. It would've been so much better with gravy. I tried the mac & cheese that my friend got and didn't really like that either so skip the mac & cheese. the chicken and waffles were good but not outstanding. The service is great. The restaurant itself was beautiful, but the bathroom is hard to find.

Yelp
Stopped off at the screen door on a road trip back to California. The place was super busy when we got there, luckily we brought our dog (their patio is dog friendly) so we got sat right away. It was cold outside but they have warmers which helped! The service was good and the menu had some pretty good variety. I chose the fried chicken and biscuits. The gravy was a sausage gravy which was Super bomb. Chicken was crispy and juicy but the star is actually the breakfast potatoes. Best I've ever had. They also have alcohol which is always a plus lolz Definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Heidi H.

Yelp
We had Shrimp & Grits~ it was fabulous. Large, juicy shrimp atop creamy, cheesy & flavorful grits. A total comfort meal on a drizzly day in Portland. It's served with a biscuit with butter & homemade jam. Very tasty! The tables are a bit close together for my liking, but I understand they are trying to get as many customers in as possible to dine. It has a fairly lively ambiance of tables chatting throughout the restaurant so don't expect to have quiet, intimate convos when the restaurant is packed. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Ruben V.

Yelp
The food, service, ambience were all 10/10. On our 7 day Portland trip this was the only place we visited twice. Best country fried steak I've ever had, and I've had a lot. If you don't stop by this joint, it's your loss. You snooze you lose
google avatar

Frankie K.

Yelp
Very busy, even on a Monday around the lunch hour. Also, very loud. Cute space, love the southern feel. The food, very big, heavy portions. I had the cajun scramble. It was pretty good. Needed some salt. The breakfast potatoes and homemade biscuit were delicious. I did order their homemade eggnog and it wasn't for me. My partner liked it. My partner had the shrimp and grits. He enjoyed it, again large portion so we had some leftovers. Overall, not bad. We had tried eating here before, and finally got to try it. We weren't disappointed... but stuffed. Would recommend if you're in the area. Definitely do dine it! We will be back to try the other food.
google avatar

Alex D.

Yelp
If you're wanting great southern food this is a place to check out if you're visiting Portland. It can be busy but it is worth the wait! Amazing location so exploring around is something to do while you wait. Eating either inside or outside is a good experience if you're eating here during the day. Their menu offers plenty of great dishes to try from either from appetizers or entrees. Try the Praline Bacon and Cheesy Grits both are really delicious if you are into savory foods.
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic southern cooking in a great atmosphere with a really fun and engaging staff.
google avatar

Yelp
Possibly the best chicken, biscuit, gravy concoction I've ever had. I chose the mushroom gravy. Absolutely delicious. Our server was personable and engaging. Stayed attentive to table maintenance and drink refills. The restaurant is warm and inviting. Everyone was very nice. Can't wait to return.
google avatar

Yelp
Totally worth the hype. With just two of us, seating was easily found at the corner of the bar. The interior of this space really reminded me of a NoLa type of location. It is really well done. Staff were friendly, if not entirely clear that it was staff. I'm not saying places need to wear uniforms or name tags all the time, but the person at the bar assisting us was wearing very casual clothing and a bass pro shops hat. Had they just been walking around the restaurant I'd have guessed that they were a patron haha. Anywho. I ordered the fried chicken and biscuits but there were so many options I could have tried. This food was great. Huge portion of course but every piece of this was just fantastic - the chicken was amazing, the sausage gravy was delicious, the biscuit was soft, buttery and just right, the potatoes were savory and well seasoned. Nothing was over done or under done. Just right. I quite enjoyed my visit, even if the place was absolutely packed on a Sunday around noon.
google avatar

Yiqiu C.

Yelp
It's good but I wouldn't call it southern food. The fried chicken got a particular taste to it. The chicken sandwich has way too much coleslaw.
google avatar

Cole S.

Yelp
Wow, wow, WOW -- Screen Door is hands down one of the best breakfast places I've ever had the pleasure of visiting, and I've traveled a lot! The maple bacon appetizer is a MUST. It was insanely good. The downtown location can get pretty busy, so I highly recommend making a reservation, but it's well worth it. The location is perfect, right in the heart of town, and the atmosphere is vibrant but cozy. As for the food, the chicken in the chicken and waffles was ridiculously flavorful -- one of the best combos I've had. My eggs benedict was the highlight of my meal, hands down. The hollandaise sauce was so creamy, and the eggs were perfectly poached. Everything here was just on another level. I can't recommend this place enough, and I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Portland.
google avatar

Bexx K.

Yelp
My first time trying Screen Door and I was obviously hoping it lived up to the hype of being the best fried chicken in Portland. I was very pleased with what I ordered. The mushroom gravy was delicious, the potatoes were seasoned very well, the chicken was juicy and crunchy at the same time, and the biscuit was beautiful. I was very impressed overall. I will definitely come back. I was happy to have beaten the crowds on the weekend and came on a Monday morning. I also ordered the Sunday coffee and it was really strong, which is a good thing. I'm waiting to come back to try more menu items and drinks.

Yelp
First time at the Pearl location, been to the one on SE Burnside countless times. The wait time to be acknowledged and dropping of the bill was very long, and there was no asking if I needed anything. Waaa, waaa, first world problems I know. The Migas tart with ample side salad was worthy, I'd order it again.
google avatar

Naomi L.

Yelp
A nice Southern meal in the Pearl District! Came on a weekday and was able to get a seat outside right away. I found that the outside area was nice since it was a little bit stuffy inside. I ordered the chicken fried steak with the pork sausage gravy. When it arrived, the food was lukewarm at best -- I think it was sitting out a bit compared to my friend's dishes? The fry on the steak was good! Not too oily and had a good amount of crunch. The pork gravy was a bit one dimensional though. I kind of wish I got the mushroom gravy instead. Eggs and potatoes were also nicely seasoned. Nothing was "bad" but I think the dish still left me wanting something more? I felt like I needed a little freshness -- like a slice of orange or something to accompany the dish. Service was a little slow outside, but our server was nice overall.

Morissa P.

Yelp
The food here is very good and delightful for brunch. We went early to avoid waiting, which I highly suggest because the place is not huge. They have patio seating as well, which I enjoy and it is less crowded feeling. Both dishes were excellent, and our server Ciana was on point even though she was handling a lot of tables. The fried chicken is outstanding, and I would come back for that alone, but everything was great. The batter on the chicken fried steak has a slight spice to it that hits only the back of your tongue while the other flavors are in full force. Well done! I would definitely come back!

Yelp
Had a lovely dinner at this beautiful restaurant before a performance at the Armory. When we arrived we were seated immediately. The server was friendly, helpful and attentive. But what really made our dinner was the delicious food. I ordered the Seared Salmon. It was done perfectly, tender, just barely done. The brown butter carrots, mushrooms, apple mostarda, carrot purée complimented the salmon perfectly. It added a bit of acidity and highlighted the tender salmon. The popped sorghum was a delightful addition of texture to round out the plate. Sooo good! My husband's burger was fried too, but I'm sure the salmon was better! Haha! Can't wait to go again!

Yelp
Born and bred a country boy turned city slicker I still love some biscuits, gravy, and fried chicken like down on my grandpa/ma's farm in the midwest - there meat, potatoes, biscuits and gravy is a way of life! That's my flashback sitting down at the table, cafe buzzing with hungry patrons enjoying laughter, conversation and a hearty breakfast this morning. Screen dood was packed. My tummy was packed too after I grubbed down some crispy outside, moist inside biscuits with house jelly, lip smacking southern fried crunchy chicken covered in a mountain of sausage gravy with fried potatoes. Yum yum! But not too full - I could have shoveled in more gravy.

Yelp
This is hands down one of my favorite brunch spots in Portland. Their Bananas Foster French Toast is absolutely divine. The toast is perfectly cooked--not soggy at all--while still bursting with flavor. The bananas and rich sauce are pure heaven, and the whipped cream is silky smooth and perfectly creamy. I always pair it with their breakfast potatoes, which might just be the best I've ever had. They're flawlessly crispy on the outside, soft and buttery on the inside, and seasoned to perfection. I've admittedly fallen into the habit of ordering the same thing every time, but with how incredible the entire menu looks, I know I need to branch out. If you're looking for a standout brunch spot, this is it!

Yelp
I just want to say how I looked forward to visiting Portland because of Screen Door. My expectations were very high and they exceeded them. Our waitress always checked up on us to see if we needed anything, and when a wrong order came out because she misheard something it was quickly fixed. The ambience inside is very Instagram worthy, but the main star is the delicious food! I ordered the chicken and biscuits and they did not disappoint! It's chicken breast smothered in sausage gravy and oh my goodness it was rich and heavy. Don't get me started on their homemade biscuits either. It was fluffy and buttery, definitely did not need any more butter. It was the most delicious biscuit I've ever had and I'm not a biscuit fan either. I ate the whole thing up and dipped it into my gravy! The chicken was moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. Perfect all around! My partner got the chicken fried steak and he said it was delicious. It was flavorful and tender and beautifully crispy on the outside. He would definitely come back here again when we visit again. Their oysters were great too! It was fresh and lightly battered so you can still taste the natural flavor of the oyster. Definitely worth a try if you want to try their seafood! Can't wait to come back and eat here again.

Yelp
I love this place! I haven't had a bad dish once! Beautiful space, clean. Service seems stretched a bit thin, but it's always busy. I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by my aunt who frequently visits Portland. She had mentioned that we absolutely should not miss out on trying out Screen Door's chicken as it is the best. So I came in with high expectations. The place was very classy, reminded me of a high class restaurant but serves chicken. Seems like a great brunch place before a big shopping spree. Food: It was definitely tasty and the buttered chicken really popped when eaten with their crunchy but also soft waffles. It was definitely a very satisfying meal. I did feel like the prices were a bit high for what it is, but the service definitely made up for it as they were very accommodating, explained each dish and even gave us some backstory to the dish, and of course our orders came in a timely manner. If you were visiting Portland, I would say to try to make your way here if you can.

Yelp
Loved my drink, very tasty. My son said the chicken and waffles were wonderful. I didn't love sitting in the window on barstools, but otherwise the service was great and fast. The scramble was so very tasty- creamy and delicious.

Yelp
This is my second review of this restaurant in less than a month because I talked about it so much a friend wanted to go! I'm so glad I did because I didn't realize the menu is different and I was able to try a delicious breakfast dish! I had the quiche and it was delicious! I was to full to try anything else except I had some of my friends potato's and they were fabulous! You want a filling meal that is delicious' this is your place!

Yelp
We can hear for a celebration and made reservations ahead of time. It was my first time here but I've heard a lot about Screen Door. The building is gorgeous and clean, nice part of downtown Portland. There's parking garages to park at, street parking (a bit harder to find), public transit as well. Staff were wonderful. We ordered a couple appetizers, some non alcoholic drinks, and entrees. For four of us, this was more than enough food. We shared it family style and had leftovers too. For appetizers we got the crispy fried oysters, fried green tomatoes and blistered shishito peppers. For the hot plates/entrees we got the New Orleans Red Beans & Rice with Crispy Fried Chicken, Fried Chicken Dinner and Memphis Style BBQ Ribs Half Rack. For the drink, I got the Violet Beauregarde which had lemon, grapefruit, orange, rosemary simple and butterfly rosemary pea tea. Pretty refreshing. It's also nice to see they have zero proof drink offerings as well. About the appetizers we had, everything was good, loved the fried oysters with the tartar sauce. The oysters were very crispy a with a cornmeal crust. The blistered shishito peppers had some pickled shallots, chile threads and garlic chips with an aioli. I don't see much fried green tomatoes on menus in Portland metro area so had to get those. It was fried nicely, with a nice dipping sauce. For entrees, u know they are known for their famous chicken & waffles but we just weren't feeling waffles for dinner. Their fried chicken was delicious, juicy and moist and boneless too. The fried chicken dinner came with two big pieces of chicken, with creamy mashed potatoes and gravy and we picked the collard greens. The red beans and rice were out of this world, probably our favorite dish of the night. The red beans had some pork stewed with it, then mixing it with the chow chow which had some acid, and the fried chicken was so wonderful. This came with some delicious cornbread as well - which had a jalapeño honey butter to accompany it. The Memphis style bbq ribs were also delicious, they were so tender, juicy and pretty much fall off the bone. We liked their baked beans, coleslaw, homemade pickles and cornbread. For all of the dishes, the portions are big. We weren't expecting it to be so big, but they are generous. Definitely recommend visiting here!

Yelp
First time trying Screen Door Pearl District! I went on a Saturday afternoon with a few friends. Definitely make a reservation for this place! There was no line when I went, but the restaurant started to fill up. There were indoor and outdoor seating options. The interior had a bit of an older/classic ambiance that made it fun to enjoy. We ordered the chicken tenders and chicken dinner plate. The chicken was prepared perfectly! I liked their Mac n cheese, but the coleslaw was just okay. There is some parking on the street. Bathrooms are gender neutral and clean. I would come back again.

Yelp
We went here on a holiday for a late-morning brunch, and it was pretty crowded. They had a 20-minute wait time for a table, but we were seated within 10 minutes, which was great.  We sat indoors. The decor was pretty cool. We started with praline bacon, as that was highly recommended by other yelpers, and it didn't disappoint.  For mains, we got the pulled pork Benedict, shrimp, and grits. As someone who's had shrimp and grits several times in South Carolina, I would say their shrimp and grits were of superior quality. The Benedict was equally delicious. Portions were huge. The grits came with buttermilk biscuits and jam, and they were pretty good as well. The staff was pretty nice and attentive. Food did take a while to come, but it was worth the wait.

Yelp
I am in Portland for a conference and decided to look for Southern-style food spots. First, the restaurant space is nice and cute, where you can also read as you eat as well. The service was quick and professional as the waiters were attentive to get my order on a timely manner. As for the food, it was really filling, but I think the fried chicken could have used more seasoning. Overall, great service, and I'll come back again.
