The Best Restaurants in Athens, Georgia | Eater Atlanta

"It’s pretty much a given that any lover of seafood and good cocktails needs to make their way to Prince Avenue hot spot Seabear, where rounds of oysters flow just as steadily as the humming Negroni slushie machine. The oyster selection is primarily harvested in the South and along the East Coast, sometimes inching up to Canadian locales, including Newfoundland and PEI. Expect to order more than anticipated because portions are on the smaller side. But nothing on this menu disappoints." - Sarra Sedghi

It was chill when I got there right after open. Already a couple of people at the bar. I got a beer and looked at the menu. The bartender was polite and checked just enough. The oysters were shucked right in front of me. After the oysters, I ordered a merman after asking the bartender what she suggested. It was beautiful and delicious.

Google
Amazing little spot for creative seafood dishes. Fun atmosphere and great service. No reservations so get there early or prepare for a wait. But it’s worth it!

Google
We were referred to this place by someone who raved about the menu. Especially, the oysters. Whenever I can get a north Atlantic oyster I jump at the chance. They had six reasonable priced ones varying from New Brunswick to RI and they were all great. We also had grouper sandwich and a lobster roll. The lobster roll was done just right. Chilled, with mayo and a light seasoning on a proper toasted bun. Being from the NE it's always to get a roll with the right amount of knuckle, claw and tail meat. Well done....To compliment the whole evening, our bartender, DANI , was outstanding. Great suggestions, well made cocktails and stellar engaging conversation. It is in the bottle works section of Athens with plenty of parking in the rear. Parking is cheap with the app.

Google
A bustling spot with amazing food and drinks. The oysters are incredible and don't miss out on the lobster rolls. They get crowded and don't take reservations, so be patient (it's worth it).

Google
Great meal. The oysters were great! Great attentive server and we ate inside as it was chilly rhat day, but cute atmosphere! Cute drink holder for my Pina Colada

Google
First visit here. Setting the mood...patio seating was very pleasant after a rainy day left cool breezes. Boys highly recommended the oysters, some of the best they've had. Caesar salad and clam strips to share and both were delicious. My husband loved the scallop fried rice. My son and I both had the grouper sandwich, lightly coated and fried without being greasy. Toasted bun and the special sauce were the perfect match. Fries were some of the best. Will be back to try all the menu!

Google
My wife and I had the most enjoyable visit last night. The space is super cool and relaxed. We sat at the bar, and the entire bar staff was attentive, friendly and chatty. The service was excellent. The food - WOW!!! We had the okra, squash, crab & shrimp cakes, and the bratwurst. Most inventive food we’ve had in a while.

Google
I think Seabear might be my current favorite restaurant in Athens. I came last minute on a Thursday night because I was in the mood for some seafood and Seabear did not disappoint. I ordered their Saturn tiki cocktail which was great and got an order of the shrimp cocktail and a dozen oysters on the half shell. This place is a bit pricey but really really worth it for a great meal.

Yelp
Very nice little place in Athens! Great service and great food. Had a half dozen oysters and the oyster stew. Everything was terrific!!

Yelp
I was in Georgia recently and decided to stop here for dinner. It is a really small place, I'm going to guess about 25 seats inside and there are some seats outside on the patio also. I was greeted at the door and they sent me at a two top near the window at the end of the restaurant. I had a friendly server and he did his job well. It was nice inside and I don't recall music playing but there was a lot of chatter from the closeness of everybody and it seemed to be sort of a neighborhood place. I ordered the fish house punch which was a cocktail that was rum based. It was a decent cocktail. I saw they had many different oyster choices but I am not an oyster fan so I did not partake in those today. They also had a fish and chips special which was fried grouper but I was not interested in a fried fish dish although it did have a very reasonable price point. To kick off my meal I ordered the kale chop salad and OMG am I glad I did. This was the best kale salad I have ever eaten. I would actually love to have the recipe if you all are listening. There was nothing skimpy about this salad and boy was it full flavor. It had lacinato kale, roasted sweet potatoes, pecans, apples, pickled red onions, blue cheese, and it was all done in a red miso vinaigrette. I will be thinking about this salad for a while. For my meal I ordered something off of their snack menu called a crispy scallion pancake and this differs from okonomiyaki because it is basically fried on the outside to make it crispy. On top of the pancake was blue crab, spicy mayo, radish, and a sesame vinaigrette. I also ordered another cocktail to go along with this, the Cassis and Desist I of course had to order dessert but the dessert that I wanted was on their menu but they did not have it so they had a substitute for it which was a chocolate ganache dense cake and I do not remember the surrounding thicker cream sauce but it was a very rich dessert. I ordered a espresso martini along with the dessert. Overall, it was a very good meal and nice cocktails but the standout to me was the kale salad I would definitely give this place another try to try a couple other things on their menu.

Yelp
Loved this place! came on a Friday for date night, and there was a bit of wait, but nothing crazy, and very accommodating. We were seated outside, and the service was pretty good. I got 2 oysters to try and they were so fresh and delicious with the mignonette! We got the bowl, calamari, mussels, and scallop fried rice. The fried rice was so good and the scallop chunks were well cooked. The mussels went so well with the green curry. The calamari was okay, but you don't get a ton because they mix it in fries. Overall, it's good portions, good food, good vibes.

Yelp
So delicious! The fish sandwich was truly one of the best I've ever had- sat at the bar and had a ball. Loved!

Yelp
Hard to believe you can find good seafood in a college town not located on the coast. But Seabear manages to find a way. If youre lucky enough to get there before six, fresh oysters are only $2 a piece but I had late dinner plans. I started with one of each of the six listed oysters and I loved them all! Super fresh and delicious, I wish I could have ordered four of each. I saved room, however, for the lobster roll and a side of fries. The portion of lobster was generous with very light dressing to help the flavor of the meat really shine. I paired with a side of fries that were cooked to crispy perfection. I enjoyed it all at their outside bar during some pleasant weather. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
If you're looking for fresh oysters and a damn good lobster roll, this is the place. It's a hip restaurant that brings up scale dining to Athens. It's a bit pricey but I thought it was worth it for a nice date night. I went definitely recommend going on a warmer night so you can enjoy the patio seating.

Yelp
Amazing sea food , good service, best sea food place in Athens. Definitely would recommend very highly. I'll be back soon.

Yelp
Again. I will find any excuse to eat here. Scallion pancake? Superb! Oysters? None better! Trust me...this is your date night/casual vibe splurge. PS Riley is the best
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
Fresh, homey, phenomenal staffers. Makes for a pretty complete package. Thank you, Seabear.
google avatar

Sali M.

Yelp
We keep forgetting about how great this place is! Went again on Sunday night and service was exceptional, thanks Riley! Food was great, fresh, flavorful, unique and not the same old same old that others do. Love the colored light on the porch they add a romantic ambiance. Again, I highly recommend!
google avatar

Gabriel B.

Yelp
Best oysters in town! Best service in town! Great bar and lobster roll is a second choice if not an oyster fan.
google avatar

Yelp
Would come here again. Oysters were fresh and entrees were decent. One negative in the service was when I asked what type of oysters were available, our waiter pointed to a board, which was behind me and also was difficult to read off of.
google avatar

Debi R.

Yelp
Love this place. We came on Saturday and sat at the bar. Some great cocktails being created. We shared 2 dz oysters ($2 before 6:00) fried clams strips, lobster roll and clam chowder. Everything was 5 I highly recommend for fresh seafood and great menu and cocktails.

Yelp
Seabear does everything right and deserves every one of the five stars. 1. Have a cool vibe. Check. Relaxed, cozy but not too tight, and easy for conversation but enough noise for good energy. 2. Have knowledgeable servers. Our tried everything on the menu and had great recommendations for both food and drink. 3. Service. Our food got to us quickly, but not rushed. 4. Quality. Every bite we took was awesome, and my squad is picky as hell. Not a bad bite on the menu. 5. Price. We paid $200 with tip for 3 people and a couple drinks each. For the best oysters and more that we have had in ages. The only warning is the menu. It is small. One pager, but you can throw a dart at any dish and win, so who cares. Walk past the BBQ and college chuckwagon restaurants in downtown Athens and get to Seabear. Then just say thank you for a great meal.

Yelp
Came back on a Friday night with my best friend. The service was great! I'm not even sure what our server's name was, but she was great. I mentioned I wanted the calamari and fries special even though it was a 45 minutes wait, she immediately checked how many was left and got us a spot at the outside bar. The service continued to be amazing, she suggested great drinks and got our calamari meal out to us as an app. We then moved to a table and ordered oysters, mussels, and a lobster roll. Everything was very delicious. This was a great Friday night dinner and I hope to return soon, especially for the calamari special. It sells out so quickly!

Yelp
I cannot say enough glowing things about this terrific high end neighborhood joint. I think I did once already, but I'll do it once a month. I'm that big of a fan. oysters? of course, always a great fresh selection on tap. knowledgeable staff and bar tenders make me feel like I'm living a real life CHEERS. DEF try the shrimp-crab cakes!, shrimp and grits, the seared okra, any seafood soup they do, and the kale caesar salad, damn. So many good things here and too many to list so try em all. Their cocktails are other worldly also.

Yelp
A MUST visit when in Athens Perfect Oysters, fried or steamed , my lord. You know they take their time when cooking em. They come out delicate & juicy Oyster Shooter was exquisite; Took me back 20 years living on harbor in Balto Nice lively indoor younger bar crowd; bar area was spotless & lively. Came in on a reco. So glad I did: Place packed fo dinner, post-vaccine. (It's a college town btw) I'll Definitely b visiting again for my seafood & oyster cravings when back In Athens Did I mention the clam chowda w oyster crackers?

Yelp
Food was great and service was just as great. Had the oysters as well as the scallop fried rice. It was all delicious.

Lorri C.

Yelp
Very small menu but what they do serve has always been delightful . The hours could be expanded. Service is a hit and miss depending on how many people show up to work that day

Yelp
If there is a patio im sitting on it, decided to stop by during shellfest and have a drink. Very nice. Service was great even when a busy establishment. Would definitely return on a nice sunny day.

Yelp
Cute little restaurant. Nice ambiance. Food was fantastic. Service was great. Very attentive. We'll be back!

Yelp
While trying to find a bite to eat after exploring Creature Comforts, we found a oyster happy hour special at Seabear that we couldn't resist. And the Sunday peel-n-eat shrimp special!!! We ended up missing the oyster happy hour... but we were too hungry to find someplace else. We ordered some cocktails to begin with - I settled on the Loveboat, one of many gin cocktails to choose from. It was sweet and pink and i loved it! We ordered a dozen oysters even though it wasn't happy hour, mostly because we couldn't decide which ones to order. They were pretty tasty - not the most unique that I've had, but some were more standout than others. Instead, I enjoyed the peel-n-eat shrimp more. Pretty simple stuff, but delicious and seasoned to my satisfaction. We ended up placing another order since we weren't full and maybe because we were feeling pretty good from the brewery tasting prior to dinner and the cocktails. We finished up with the key lime pie, which was a-ok! A pretty slice, for sure, though! Overall, I'll have to check my watch a little better next time for happy hour specials. But next time I'm in Athens, I'll have to make another pitstop at Seabear!

Yelp
Best place for oysters in Athens. Great setting, great service, delicious drinks !! One of my favorites in Athens.

Kaila M.

Yelp
We waited two and a half hours. we got there at 6 and the hostess said it'd be an hour wait. We kept checking in and she kept saying "there's X groups ahead of you." MeanwhIle, we saw people in larger groups who came after us be seated before us. Possible racism, as we were the only Black people there. The hostess said "you're up next" but other groups were called before us. At 8:30, we left. Don't think they would've called us. We've been before and the food was nothing worth waiting three hours for.

Yelp
Loveeee love love this place. Some of the best & freshest oysters I've had! The appetizers and drinks were delish too. Gotta get the fried clams or calamari, crab cakes, the bao & the curry mussels, they are so good! The only downside is they can get extremely busy and parking in th area is kind of tough. Definitely a must try! Such a good spot for a date night too ;)

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Athens . Incredible oysters and great service. Atmosphere also is really good. Love to go there with my friends and family

Yelp
This was the last stop on a food crawl of Athens. We showed up a little after 10pm for their late night happy hour with includes a $5 pour of wine and $1.50 for any and all oysters until sold out. My partner and I sat at the bar and ordered drinks and 2 of each oyster. They were fresh and spanned from briny to sweet, but none gritty. We had some conversation with the bartender over drinks, many of which were completely custom to the restaurant. We had a couple of extra rounds at his suggestion and got a very smokey play on an old fashioned along with a gin based briny drink that went quite well with the oysters. Lots a tile in the design, a huge back bar, and a great place to end the night.

Yelp
Seabear is an amazing Oyster bar. Their selection of oysters is outstanding. On top of that - their Shrimp and Grits is by far the best I've ever had. The shrimp came out perfect. The service is also tops - from the host to the wait staff. They were quick and polite. My wife and I really enjoyed our dinner and I think you would as well!
google avatar

Pedro S.

Yelp
The best Oysters you can have around Atlanta (and the best for sure in Athens). A must place for Oyster lovers.
google avatar

Rita M.

Yelp
Never again. Very disappointed. Caesar salad flavor hidden by way too much pepper. I was asked if I wanted it with my dinner or before. I chose before. That didn't happen as it arrived with my dinner. Waitress stopped by to see if the food was tasting good to which I replied " my salad is ok" as she glanced at my dinner getting cold. Not that it mattered very much. The "Crab and shrimp cakes" were the worst I've ever had. As you can see from the photo it was mainly bread crumbs. I searched for crab and or shrimp, even put on my glasses, ...minuscule amount. I left what the photo shows and there was silence when she removed the plate. Disgraceful service, horrible food.
google avatar

Malika B.

Yelp
I love Negronis and was excited to see there Negroni Slushie machine. I was disappointed that the serving size is in a mini glass. Just know if you order it, the reason it is only $7 is because it is tiny. Why not just charge more and put it in a bigger glass? I did order another drink that was much more bang for your buck. Then I got my lobster roll that I ordered. So small. It was like 3 bites. Really good but so tiny. The fish and chips my husband ordered was more substantial and tasty too. We spent $75 (plus tip) and still had to go somewhere else to eat shortly after because there the portions here are so small.

Jamie C.

Yelp
Delicious food and nice atmosphere, but expensive. Service is excellent. I had oysters for appetizer which were fresh and tasty and ramen for main. Really enjoyed both.

Kay D.

Yelp
On the day I went it was for the purpose of trying different oysters. I was not disappointed in the taste, but it was a little pricey. The ambience is good.

Yelp
What can I say, this place is awesome. This continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in Athens. Come during Happy Hour for the oysters! Oysters, you can ask for recommendations or just get a sample all of the available ones that day. For the other plates, I liked the mussels and the crab patty but they didn't particularly stand out. The lobster roll is small and $15, but it is such a good treat. It's so buttery and delicious. That is a definite must-try. I saw a Tiki Drink section on the bar drink menu. I think the one I got was called Rum Runner, but I'm not too sure. It was delicious, strong, and had a beautiful presentation. The other tiki drinks I saw were all beautiful. There is a parking lot close that has free parking up to a limited time. The only downside is at no fault of the restaurant. Sometimes during Happy Hour, it gets really crowded. The tables are very close together. I've been here a good amount of times, but the most recent time we were seated next to 2 very rude people. They complained loudly about how disgusting they think oysters are and when our oyster plate came, they were laughing and gagging at us. I'm not sure what their purpose was since this is a restaurant primarily for oysters. Every other table had ordered some. They didn't ruin the whole experience, but just keep in mind that you are within earshot and sitting basically inches away from another table during crowded times. Overall, every other time has been a good experience and I will continue coming here!
google avatar

Rachel Y.

Yelp
We went here for an early dinner on a Saturday. Service was friendly & fast. Our cocktails were strong & tasty. They had 6 varieties of oysters available, so we enjoyed a sampler dozen- two of each kind. They were all fresh & delicious, zero grime or grit. We also ordered the chicken confit steamed buns, lobster roll & green curry mussels. My only critique is that the lobster roll was a small portion. But it tasted amazing. Highly recommend it. The mussels on the other hand was a generous portion, and they were so meaty and delicious. We liked the steamed buns too but not as much as the lobster roll/mussels. I will definitely be back for a lobster roll snack next time I'm in Athens. Nom.
google avatar

Ang K.

Yelp
Outdoor seating was open for dining. There are about 6 tables and some other seating. Order and pay at the hut (front door) , grab your own utensils and napkins, and throw away your own trash. Happy hour 4-6pm on one type of oysters I think for $2. We tried 4 different types, and liked Polar Pond and Beausoleil the best. The rum runner was pretty good and strong. The fish sandwich I think was cod - tasted pretty good. Fries were salty but good. Crab and fish cake tasted more of shrimp imo. Overall satisfying dinner, but on the pricier end. I did like that they brought food and drinks out in disposables, but felt like a fast food restaurant since we had to throw away our own trash and no table service.
google avatar

Yelp
How does a land locked little spot in Athens have the freshest oysters you'll ever eat? I'm not sure really but I don't care. Truly the best oyster experience that you will have anywhere. Drinks and other food items are incredible as well. Service team is kind and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Melinda M.

Yelp
Just moved from Brooklyn, NY- it was my birthday and I wanted oysters. This restaurant was recommended by a co-worker and boy you guys hit a home run! We ordered 2 dozen fresh oysters (3 different choices available) appetizers and dinner. All fantastic and what we thought was reasonable pricing. I believe Zoe & Walter were our servers and couldn't give them enough thanks for superior service and fun. We will be back:-))

Emma G.

Yelp
The food and service from the servers/food runners were amazing, specifically from the woman workers. However, the manager-owner was so incredibly rude. As someone who is well familiar with the restaurant industry, I have never been treated with such rudeness by an owner or manager.
google avatar

Tracy C.

Yelp
Hands down, the best oyster bar I've ever been to. A super quality bar, the biggest variety of oysters, and the best description of each oyster's texture/flavor/size. Such a wonderful place to eat!

Paul P.

Yelp
Amazing selection of fresh oysters plus yummy lunch/dinner and bar food menu. Stylish, chill vibe. Love that SOB is open late

Michelle C.

Yelp
Been a couple years since we have been to Athens. Unlike other places, this place has stayed top notch. The employees obviously take pride in their job and workplace. Awesome drinks. Zack was an outstanding bartender, treated me like a person, not an annoyance like most places in Athens. Oysters were delicious and not super over priced like other places. Always love the okra. Such a great vibe here.

Yelp
I went on mother's day evening and there wasnt a wait and was seated immediately. Ive heard alot of good things about this place and was expecting amazing food. The mussels were bland and I didn't like it compared to ones I eat at George's old country restaurant. I tried the new England clam chowder and that was better then the mussels, but the waitress told me it was the last of it and I could definitely tell but I didn't complain. The shrimp and grits were OK, but again it didn't feel like it was better then other places I've eaten at in town. The oysters were good but I've never had a bad Oyster lol. We had 1 specialty drinks which was like a raspberry mojito which was good and we ordered the negroni frozen drink which had a bitter taste to it and I hated it and didn't finish it. I'm not sure if I went on an off day or maybe because it was late in the evening and they kind of slacked on cooking the food well but I wasn't impressed at all by the taste of their food. I've heard ramen night is good. Maybe I'll try it again on that evening
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place! My boyfriend and I went here on a Saturday night to get some drinks at the bar. The bartenders were friendly and helpful. We ended up ordering the avocado toast in addition to our drinks. It was amazing! I highly recommend. Overall great service and great food/drinks!

Yelp
THE BEST OYSTERS AROUND! HAPPY HOUR 3P-6P SO JUST DO IT. Seabear is one of my favorite restaurants in Athens!! I love the variety in the Oysters and their drink menu is so fun! The service is incredible and I've never had anything go wrong here. I love this place so much! Try everything on the menu - you'll love it all. For the other plates, I liked the mussels and the crab patty but they didn't particularly stand out. We also had the lobster bisque soup which was perfect. GREAT SERVICE! GIVE IT A TRY!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious... fantastic cocktails, fabulous lobster roll! The service was top notch, can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Heard great things about Seabear so I had to give it a try. OUTSTANDING !!! Love this place !! The food here is really special. So fresh and extremely high quality ingredients. Hats off to the chef. The crab and shrimp cakes are BETTER than any I've ever had on the coast. The ceviche was my favorite, Must have Now on my Top list of places to eat in Athens.

Yelp
Came for oysters during Happy Hour (10pm-12am) with my boyfriend. The lights were dim and cozy, and mood of the overall restaurant was hipster-ish. 10pm was a good time to go because there were not as many people and no wait time. Oysters did not disappoint! We got sampling's of 6 different varieties. My favorite one was Sweet Kiss but all were fresh and salty and yum. Shrimp cocktail was good but nothing outstanding. Also ordered a Guinness for $4 and I liked it. Oysters weren't very filling so we ordered more. I read good reviews about the Lobster Roll so I decided to give it a go, but it wasn't as delicious and buttery as reviews said. I probably wouldn't order it again for the price ($15) and size (about as big as the palm of my hand). Bf says Fried Oyster Po' Boy was good. Price of food items is expensive for college students, but we will 100% come back for the oysters.

Yelp
My sister lives in Athens and we came here to visit her. So after reading the reviews and great praise from my sister we decided to come in. It took us about 15 minutes to get a table. But not too bad to get a drink meanwhile at the bar. We were really hungry and got into dinner. My sister got the okra, which was tasty. My husband who is a huge oysters fan got those. He couldn't decide which oyster he liked more (he got everything they had available). My crab cakes were good. A bit oily for me. The peach salad was tasty. We had key lime pie and was it fantastic? Our drinks were just delicious. Great service. Definitely be back when back in town.

Yelp
Outstanding choice of oysters. Incredibly fresh and delicious. I really enjoyed sitting at bar, ordering an assortment of all oysters of the day, having an ice cold beer, and engaging with the friendly staff. Can't wait to back. Damn shame I live in Arizona.
