"Who wants to share a tiny, savory pie? Not likely. This casual Australian pie shop and cafe is where to go for a hot beef stew pie and a bottle of Bundaberg ginger beer at a cozy table inside or on the pretty patio. Afterwards, wander among the interesting art within the East Boston marina, and make a stop at the Downeast taproom to buy some cans of hard cider. If the weather is sunny, head down the street to Piers Park, which boasts some of the best skyline views of Boston." - Tanya Edwards, Eater Staff

"Everyone loves having nothing to do. But wasting an entire day is another matter. You wake up at noon, wear sweatpants till three, spend half an hour shoveling cereal into your mouth straight from the box in front of The Steve Harvey Show, and then realize that, shoot, you only have so much time on Earth and you’re about to let an entire day slip away without having made anything of it. It’s not a good feeling. When you need to feel like you made something out of an otherwise empty day, KO Pies is here for you. Just going to this place is a little bit different, a little bit special. There aren’t a lot of eating experiences that will make you feel this way, especially in a world where we consume most of our food in front of screens, but there aren’t a lot of restaurants where just getting there makes you feel like an unironic urban explorer. photo credit: Amanda Lewis KO Pies is hidden in an active shipyard in East Boston, the only Boston neighborhood that you can’t walk to from any other Boston neighborhood (and even if you live in Eastie, you still have to walk past a security booth to get to it). Take a boat across the harbor (or, if you’re boring, the Blue Line), walk past multiple aluminium fabricators and an art gallery, and eventually, you’ll find the Australian beach bar of a restaurant that is KO Pies. It’s a half-indoor/half-outdoor brick shack filled with flags, picnic tables, and Aussie curse words - a post-industrial hideaway of good food and drinks in the middle of a shipyard that looks like it could have a dead body or two buried underneath piles of rusted cables. In other words, it’s a lot of fun. photo credit: Amanda Lewis The food vaguely looks like bar food, in the sense that it’s a lot of meat and and a lot of carbs. But all that beige-ness is put together in different ways than you’re used to seeing if your toilet flushes clockwise. That’s how you get things like a big, juicy sausage wrapped in puff pastry, or giant, crispy potato wedges served with sweet chili instead of fries served with ketchup. The meat pies are the stars, of course, and they’ve earned that designation. They’re soup bowl-sized pies filled with really tender meats and vegetables encased in a flaky crust. The ingredients are all pretty familiar, but you’ll love this stuff anyway - it’s meat and carbs you eat with your hands and you wash it all down with a beer or sangria. It’s enough to make you feel like you’re really enjoying your time on Earth rather than wasting it, even if you never managed to change out of those sweatpants. Pull up a deck chair next to the corn hole, order a cider that was brewed in a warehouse next door, and then play a round of guess which shipping container contains something illegal hidden inside stuffed teddy bears while you wait for your food. You made to KO Pies, you’ve done something today. Food Rundown photo credit: Amanda Lewis Irish Beef Stew Pie You really can’t go wrong with any of the five standard pies they serve every day (beef stew, lamb shank, curried vegetable, classic, and classic with cheese) but we think the really tender shredded beef has the most flavor. photo credit: Amanda Lewis Pie Floater You can get any pie made as a floater, where it’s completely doused with mashed potatoes, peas, and gravy. It’s sloppy, it makes you wish it was Thanksgiving, and it’s delicious. photo credit: Amanda Lewis Sausage Roll It’s the adult version of the pigs-in-a-blanket that you and your cousins would completely devour in under three minutes at every family holiday, and it’s great. photo credit: Amanda Lewis Potato Wedges We don’t blame you if you have an aversion to thick-cut steak fries - the best part of any french fry is the crispy outer edge, and these types of fries have the smallest edge-to-inside ratio. But the potato wedges here are different. Even the ones that are roughly the size of your forearm will be really crunchy. You won’t stop eating them. photo credit: Amanda Lewis Wok Tossed Salt And Pepper Wings They’re perfectly fine bar wings (though not Buffalo style) but you don’t need them. Get another pie, instead. photo credit: Amanda Lewis Chicken Schnitzel Burger If you’re not in the mood for a meat pie, this enormous fried chicken sandwich with sweet chili sauce is your best bet. But if you trekked all the way out here even though you’re not in the mood for a meat pie, we’re going to question your decision-making process." - Dan Secatore

Seabiscuit is permanently closing on 2024/03/14, so I moved it to the top of my to-visit list, especially since there are not many Aussie food places in Boston. It has a very nautical and private vibe and (thankfully) has its own parking lot. Service was fast and very friendly. - Beef Stew Pie ($14.50): Expensive for the size but delicious. The inside was all meat. Despite the name, it wasn't a stew in the sense that liquid spilled out when cut, so you could eat it by hand. The meat was tender and had a sweetness to it, which I liked because I was worried it would be too salty. The pie crust was nice and flaky. I probably should have tried this with ketchup, as is the tradition. - Lamington ($5.95): Larger than I expected. These are prepackaged and stored in the fridge. Eating it cold was refreshing. The inside was a dense sponge cake that I wish had been moister, but I enjoyed it overall. Coconut is the dominant flavor, so if you're not a fan of that, this is not the dessert for you. Overall, this place was worth the trip, so check it out while you still can!

Google
Great little place! Everything was really good, scratch made. Crust was great! Nice flavor! Interesting music playing. One thing that would take it over the top is a little gravy or sauce to dip or drizzle with, if one wanted a more pot pie style interior.

Google
This place is such a hidden gem! We finally had a chance to visit on a Sunday morning and had a lovely time. The patio is dog friendly, so we took our pup and had a seat at a picnic table. There were space heaters, but the temp was only about 50, so bundle up! My date had the biscuit bacon egg and cheese and it was perfect. The perfect size, perfect bacon, perfect tomato jam, perfect biscuit! I had the Smoked Salmon Brioche Sandwich and it was delicious. The egg was scrambled but not over cooked. The salmon portion was generous. And the BUN! Ahhh the bun was crispy and kept its integrity while eating the sandwich - a rarity for brioche! We both had coffees as well. My almond milk latte had the yummiest, stiffest foam I’ve ever had. We will absolutely be coming back.

Google
Excellent place to try. We needed to be close to the airport and eat something before going. This place we found by chance and loved everything about it. We didn't know it was Aussie infused food. Since it was something quick we ordered chicken sandwich and meat pie. Loved both. A good surprise is they had the game between Argentina and Australia, so even better. Good service. Not even the rainy day affected how I liked the place. Will Be Back.

Google
Really tasty. I’d been to KO pies and The Biscuit before they both closed, and Seabiscuit does a great job following in their footsteps. The breakfast sandwiches were delicious with perfectly cooked eggs and great biscuits. The pie was great with a tasty filling and flaky crust, and the blueberry scones were a nice treat. The location is very nice too. Definitely recommend.

Google
Lots of easy free parking. Not the great place it once was in Somerville, The Biscuit. I was very disappointed with the food selection. The quality is still there, but it's not the same. If you are a customer from the old location it's not worth the drive. But I'm sure they will get new customers that will appreciate the food. If you have mobility issues the toilets are difficult to get to

Google
Seabiscuit had big shoes to fill in the KO Pies space but they’ve done it. Rest easy the Australian meat pies are still available but they’ve added much more. Great bakery items. Brunch was fantastic. Great take on biscuits and gravy and avocado toast!

Google
Stopped in during a heat wave for something cold to drink in the afternoon. Saw this place and got a jasmine green tea - hit the spot! The pastries and scones looked delicious...didn’t have one, but they looked like 5 stars so I’ll go ahead leave that (also because the staff was super nice and chill).

Yelp
They prepare lunch for takeout quickly, which is great if you're on lunch break from work. I was pleasantly surprised by the fish I got on the side of my beet salad- the chef said it was from local waters, and it had just a bit of breading and was perfectly cooked. The beet salad was smaller than I expected- it was more of an accompaniment to the fish. I don't think it would have been enough food without adding a protein. It was all delicious. The berry iced tea I got was also delightful- just a tad sweet. When I'm in a more carb-y mood can't wait to try the pies and other baked goods that they are known for.

Yelp
Nothing better than a hot meat pie on a 90°F day. Actually, though, with the shade from the patio and a breeze blowing through, dining on a meat pie at Seabiscuit was a great summer meal. The weirdest thing about Boston is that there are at least two places that do Australian pies, including Seabiscuit. It's weird reconciling the $12 price with a hand-sized pie, but the buffalo chicken was worth it. Not a traditional Aussie pie flavor (shame on me for not trying the beef stew or lamb shank) but it was delicious. The buffalo chicken flavor is apparently the pie of the month for July, but I hope it comes around again. The filling was flavorful, soft, juicy chicken in a very mild spice. It wasn't spicy at all, which can be good or bad depending on your spice tolerance. The Anzac biscuits ($3) looked flatter and thinner than I expected, but taste like a mildly more coconutty oatmeal cookie which I love. The ice cream sandwich ($8) was delicious-- just the right ratio of ice cream to cookie. The sausage roll was good, but I kept getting bits of gristle (?) in there, which kind of ruined eating it. The flavor, though, is spot-on. They also sell frozen pies and sweet pies, coffee, lamingtons, sandwiches, and some other small baked goods.

Yelp
Grabbed a bite as we walked along the Greenway. Cute little place with great food and a fun view of the businesses in the harbor. Fresh caught fish sandwich was our choice for our first visit. Perfectly cooked. Enjoyed with a local beer and cider along with a side of potato wedges. Next time definitely trying a meat pie!

Mark B.

Yelp
Bonza Aussie tucker. Few places in the US understand what a pie is. This place does. Pasty 10/10, filling 10/10. Even better, gourmet mushy peas and gravy awaits the senses slathered over the pie like the last wave over sand at Bondi on a good surf day. Had the beef steak pie. Choice. Super soft beef, great pastry and cooked perfectly. Of course this required a topping of "Tomato Sauce". Yes, that's it's proper name to you ketchup-numpties. Sadly not Fountain's from down under but Heinz is ok as a shoe-in despite my sarcastic banter. Peas had a touch of....coriander? Mint? Lovely variation on the usual mushy delight. Topped off with a Cooper Ale, straight from Adelaide. Sausage roll on the side also worthy. Delish. Edit:- Lamingtons also good. Up to snuff. Fair dinkum.

Yelp
Yummy food. Super fast service. A definite win in an otherwise bleak area. Make sure to check for the daily specials

Yelp
I came to Seabiscuit back when it was KO Pies and loved it, and I'm happy that a lot of the charm and character of the old spot is still here. If you're a fan of KO Pies, I'm happy to report that the pies (and the fries) are just as good as ever. The old owner passed on the pie recipe so it's definitely worth trying if you haven't, or coming back if it's been a while. This time around we go the fish and chips and fish sandwich, and both were delicious. The fish sandwich was a bit hard to eat but I liked the fry on the fish better. A less firm bun would make it easier to eat and less messy. We were also able to get beer from one of our favorite Everett breweries, Bone Up, while we were there, and I'm glad they are doing partnerships like that. The scones, biscuits, and coffee looked very good, so I'm hoping to come back soon in the morning to try them out!

Yelp
The perfect spot to grab something to eat and bring over to the Downeast Cider Garden. I had the Lamb pie, it was delicious. Very flavorful with a top and bottom crust. Food was fresh, excellent selection. 5/5 would definitely eat there again!

Anna Y.

Yelp
Shipyard Fish and chips plate (around $20) - the fish itself was OK, but the breadcrumbs soggy, probably wrong temperature of oil, the fries this time just passable. Chicken sandwich worst than mediocre, very thin, very small. Ukrainian "borsch" was probably made with water, not broth, so the very small portion was enough. A beer, cup of white wine, $72. We used to love to sit outside (they used to play great lounge music), just chill. It does not feel like that anymore. The person inside taking order was nice, otherwise no service, they just bring your food to your table, get your plastic utensils yourself. And we are supposed to tip for what? Our last time there. Sad.

Kristina M.

Yelp
Aussie meat pies are at the top of both mine and my partner's "Best Things About Australia" lists, so when my godmom told us there was a pie shop in Boston, we had to stop in. We were bummed first because the place was originally called "Ko's" and their website said it was closed, but from the pictures, it looks like the menu is all the same. We ordered a classic beef and cheese, beef stew, and a sausage roll - ABSOLUTELY delicious. Crust was beautifully buttery and flakey, meat was super tender, and even the mushy peas looked delicious and freshly puréed. The location is a little odd, but the food is delicious - plus the dog-watching was pretty good too.

Natalia B.

Yelp
Food tastes identical to when it was KO Pies- I think prices are on the high side, but my kiddo, who survives on air and water, actually ate a beef stew pie. It may have been the best and most filling meal he's ever eaten. He doesn't eat meat otherwise (aside from hot dogs) and doesn't really eat much of anything so that must tell you something. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the potato wedges.

Fat Foodie F.

Yelp
the foods good and its rlly convenient, but this place is wayyyy to expensive. side of potato wedges are $9??? a potato is like... $0.20. And your salads are the same price as that?? adjust ur pricing please.

Matt D.

Yelp
When I heard K.O Pies were planning on closing I was crestfallen. Their delicious Australian-style meat pies were a great addition to East Boston. I was overjoyed to learn they would stay open under a new name, Seabiscuit. I have such a fun, relaxing time when I come here. My wife and I really enjoy sitting at their picnic tables eating a beef stew pie with some fries and a beer during the summer. The staff are the best. We like coming here for lunch and then head to Downeast Cider popup afterwards.

Derek R.

Yelp
This place is a wonderful addition to Eastie and is so tasty, I got the breakfast sandwich there and the potatoes and both my girlfriend and I were pleasantly surprised. I have lived in Eastie since KO Pies was around and Seabiscuit is just as good with some additional offerings and more fun events for locals and those visiting for the day. I would highly recommend this place for the friendly staff and the extended hours! My only advice is for them to incorporate their environmental charge into their food cost and present it as one total cost so that strange people don't have anything to complain about.

Liz P.

Yelp
This is the former KO pies with a new owner and new name, but still serving delicious, flaky Australian meat pies. Everything we got was delicious! We caught the beef stew pie (yum) and a pie of the month, which was a veggie medley. Also got fish and chips, a side of mac n cheese, and a lamington and anzac biscuit for dessert. The beef stew pie was my favorite. So flavorful. Loved the flakiness of the pies. The fish was so fresh. Dessert was ok, probably wouldn't get again. The prices are ok but the portions are not huge, so I recomend getting 2 things per person, like either an entree and a pie or two pies. Bonus, there is parking next to the restaurant.

Michelle D.

Yelp
Stumbled upon Sea Biscuit the other day while walking through the ship yard. Staff was friendly, food was excellent, and the seating area is so cute. They've even have corn hole and outdoor music. It's always fun to walk through the shipyard, so I am excited that there's now a restaurant to go to. Would be a great place to stop for lunch after visiting the ICA!

Les P.

Yelp
Sadly after the original owners left this place has gone down hill. Not only is the service bad but the prices have gone up and the food isn't as good. I was so excited to see "ko" remain open but not worth it for a $20 salad at half the portion size.

Erin T.

Yelp
We loved The Biscuit in Somerville and finally made it over to its reincarnation, Sea Biscuit, last weekend - it was just as good as we remembered! We got the biscuit egg sandwiches, biscotti and pecan shortbread. Their baked goods are totally delicious and, of course, the biscuits are the main attraction for me. The savory biscuit and the tomato jam on the egg sandwich were absolutely incredible. They have indoor & covered/semi-insulated outdoor seating, a full coffee menu, weekend brunch, and lunch and dinner. They weren't too busy when we went on a Saturday morning so it was easy to get a seat inside and linger over coffee and biscotti. Can't wait to be back soon!

Charles R.

Yelp
We had very high expectations based upon the most recent reviews. We ordered 3 meat pies, grilled shrimp on feta salad and various sides. The sides and shrimp on feta salad was fine. The pies however were oddly disappointing: the crust was savory and buttery, NOT the same for the pie innards. The beef was dry and overcooked. Ditto for the lamb shank. The cheeseburger pie was basically ground beef with no semblance to a cheeseburger, the decision to melt the cheese on the outside of the pie is a mistake, both esthetically and flavor wise. On top of this, the portions are small and the tally was over $100. They also charged us full price for a slice of pecan pie. Guess they missed that one on top of the others misses. Maybe the new owner needs a period of adjustment. We'll give it another try in a few months.

Carrie B.

Yelp
I'm a neighbor to the shipyard and we loved KO, so I'm trying to not be too nostalgic about the greatness that was KO... I have gone to Sea Biscuit a few times now and I think that for the price, the dishes are really small. Plus last night while checking out the cashier quickly rung me up and I noticed an "environmental charge" on the bill so I asked what that was. She said it was a fee for the packaging of the food. I'm all for this in theory but *make it clear you are charging* - have a sign or explain it so it doesn't seem like a SNEAKY upcharge. Even better, have metal silverware (like KO did) or compostable silverware and then compost.

Freda Z.

Yelp
Were any actual Australians consulted when you took the classic beef pie off the menu??? What really hits the nostalgia feels is the elevated version of the classic Four N Twenty... nothing else hits the spot. Extremely disappointed not to see it on the menu anymore, especially since KO Pies was so amazing. Please bring it back!

Craig P.

Yelp
If you want Aussie/British style pie then this your place, gravy pie floater is awesome, also dog friendly and super nice staff.

Jah V.

Yelp
Fantastic spot for anything from a simple drink, lunch or to satisfy your sweet tooth! Staff is always super friendly and accommodating!

Tom H.

Yelp
So disappointed. The menu looks amazing. But I had the lamb pie. It was tiny. The lamb was so dry. No gravy at all. Tried adding brown sauce but tastes didn't mix well. For $13.50 I could have bought 4 Mrs Swanson pies and been happier. My friend had the beef pie. Also very disappointing. She also wanted a glass of red wine. They were out. Instead she got white. Served in a miniature plastic wine glass for $10. Crazy! They had a big jar with water. Never refilled. Overall a terrible experience.

Olivia K.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place leaving the ICA and loved it! I had the cheeseburger pie and Arnold Palmer, both were amazing.

Rolando R.

Yelp
I ordered the pie beef shank pie and they charged an extra dollar for "package costs" what is that? Plus the lady in the front desk was rude. Great food but man service and extra fees need quite some more work to make the experience pleasant.

Jeanne L.

Yelp
Amazing pies!! Tried the chicken gumbo, lamb, and dessert pies. Fish and chips were also really nice and loved the selection of drinks.

Matthew S.

Yelp
This place had a really good Sunday brunch, and nice outdoor seating. I had the smoked salmon brioche sandwich. It was filling, but light. I'll be back to try the hand pies.

Sarah J.

Yelp
Delicious! They've done a great job picking up where KO left off! They also have amazing bread pudding.

Johnna L.

Yelp
Food so good I couldn't wait to write a review. The pies are just as good as KO shipyards and sea biscuit really showed up!! Must try place, get the pie floater too!
