New Restaurants and Bars That Have Opened in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"A bean-to-bar chocolate shop where the entire process—from roasting cacao to tempering chocolate—is on display; owner and chocolatier Jim Lantry teaches chocolate-making classes and produces single-origin bars, truffles, bonbons, chocolate-nut spreads, and loose-leaf tea made from cacao husks and ground cacao nibs." - Candice Woo

Today I took my family for an afternoon chocolate truffle decoration day. This experience was for my wife for her birthday but wanted to bring the kids. It was truly a fun time. Over 2 hours of decorating and learning about how to make truffles. This experience was great for kids. Kept them entertained for the entire time. I have 2 boys 5,7. They hung in there and had a great time. Mel helped us and she made the time ever so fun. I recommend this for anyone. It was a great time for our family of 5. Thank you Seabreeze and Mel for a great time.

My family goes to this place many times. We drove a half hour to get there because we had to try the amazing hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was terrible. It tasted like Swiss Miss made with water. My family member told the staff this and they argued with her that this was how they always made it. There's clearly a new member making it and she really did not know how to deal with it and she did not know how to deal with with a customer. They did make a new batch for us and it was the same. I then got really sick for about 3 hours from it.

This is really a gourmet chocolatier, with wonderfully beautiful handmade chocolates and excellent hot chocolate offerings. They are a very high end, niche chocolate seller. Makes wonderful gifts. They roast and make all their chocolate in house. Such a wonderful smell when you enter. The service is friendly and top notch. The decor in the store is some lacking - and does not really match the high end nature of their chocolate offerings. Still, it’s a great place to buy a gift of chocolate.

Google
Very cool place. These folks roast high quality cacao beans sourced only from the Americas and Caribbean. They then make their chocolate right there in the shop. If you come in, you can see it being made. They sell all sorts of chocolate-based treats, all made and decorated in-house, from the chocolate they prepare themselves. Definitely worth a visit!

Google
I took the chocolate class here and what can I say... it was one of the best experiences ever! From decorating your chocolates to making the ganache and choosing the flavors... its definetly a hands on experience and I would recommend it any second. The staff is AMAZING (Im talking to you John!) And taking a whole box of truffles home is a blast. Thank you so for much for this experience ❤️

Google
We ordered truffle boxes for my daughter's wedding. The flavors were so much fun, the chocolate was amazing, and the design on the truffles was beautiful! The customer service was fabulous!! Going with Seabreeze was one of our best and easiest wedding decisions!!

Google
Incredible. That's the only way to describe this new chocolate shop. Each chocolate and treat is unique, capturing a flavor and texture that I have never experienced before. The selection is huge and varied, with no two sweets being similar. For example, the Peanut Butter and Jelly chocolate is filled with actual PB&J. The Lychee chocolate tastes as if you just ate a fresh chocolate dipped fruit. I have never, in my life, had anything like these chocolates. They are a new, eye opening experience, and I encourage everyone to try Seabreeze Chocolates. On top of that, the staff and owner are incredible people, who are passionate about what they're doing here, and they are doing something truely unique and new.

Siddartha D.

Google
This place makes their chocolate in-house, and it's a visual feast to watch the chocolate making live. I tried the hot chocolate, and it was the best ever I had. They melt the chocolate into the milk that makes it special.

Yelp
It's not very often i get to go to an artisan chocolate shop thanks to a severe but allergy... but I thought I'd pop in and ask how safe it might be. The staff were so sweet and assured me they do a serious job of avoiding cross contamination and they've never had anyone with issues. They showed me which cases to stay away from. I walked away with yummy box of 6 truffles. They were so good. I'm certainly be back.

Yelp
Signed up for a private chocolate making class for a team building event. They're flexible with time/date which a plus! However, the venue itself is quite small. They set up a table in the middle of the shop and provide a tray with a variety of colors and flavors to work with. We essentially decorated the outer shell of the chocolate by painting the trays, then they pretty much do the rest of the work (although you do get to pipette the pre made chocolate into the tray afterwards. While it's solidifying, one of the workers provides a tour and background of their store's history. Chocolate itself was delicious!

Yelp
Overall had a great experience at the chocolate making class. It was fun to make designs and channel your inner creative - something not many of us do anymore with our busy schedules! The 3 hour class includes many lessons about chocolate including where cacao beans grow, the harvest process, and what happens once the beans are roasted. You spend more time in the lessons than the actual chocolate making. I enjoyed the class and definitely created some of the best chocolate I've ever had. Jim really cares about this business and you can taste the love in the finished product.

Yelp
Lovely little chocolatier, with a nice variety of truffles and bonbons. The gal at the counter was very patient and set our choices aside where I grabbed a photo of some. I tried the dark chocolate with salted caramel and think it was good but too much caramel. I should have gotten a cream center instead. Husband had raspberry and chocolate fudge filled, and our friends had a strawberry cream and a pistachio flavor. All very tasty and not super small bites. We sampled five pieces, for four adults. It was just under three ounces and subtotaled $16. Plus tax and tip, dessert for four people was under $20. I would say this is fine for a special occasion but I wouldn't make it a habit!

Yelp
We did a private group of 4 people for the chocolate truffle making class at Seabreeze. We learned how to paint beautiful designs into the molds and the process of how chocolate is made. One of my favorite parts of the class was tasting chocolate from different origins and trying to identify the flavor profiles. We got to mix and flavor our own ganache for the filling. The best one our group made was raspberry and almond. You each get 21 take home chocolates plus the extra ganache. Overall it was a fun experience and easy for my 92 year old grandma to participate in. The chocolate for the shells is already prepared in the tempering machine and I do wish we got to participate more in the process besides decorating and flavoring.

Yelp
They transform quality cacao beans into fun bon bons in different flavors as well as handcrafted chocolate bars. They even have their machine on display right as you enter. I really enjoyed the Dubai bar filled with pistachio creme, tahini, chopped pistachios, and kadyif. They ran out of the full size so I got the one they had and it was pretty good. I've had their solid chocolates and bon bons and they have unique flavors that I liked. They also offer chocolate making classes which is something I am interested in and especially when it's to support local businesses.

Yelp
Our group booked a chocolate making class for our kids ages 6-7 on a Saturday afternoon. There is a 90 min class and chocolate making class that is available for about 12 students. When we arrived there are 2 long tables and chairs available only for the students (all kids). If parents accompanied kids, then they would need to stand. Please note that this shop is already tiny and space is very limited. Kids would need to wash their hands prior to taking a seat. The class was very educational and fun. The girls enjoyed the chocolate making process and the host was very informative of the process and how where chocolate comes from. The talk was about 20 mins and some of the younger kids were staring off into space and yawning so keep that in mind for kids who cannot sit still or the attention span is not very long. The kids made their own designs for one candy bar and colored a photo for an Oreo cookie. It was a cool process to see how these chocolates are made. Because it was the holiday season, the constant flow of customers was crazy which made space even more limited. The chocolates are expensive (chocolate bar is $12) so keep that in mind if you decide to come here for delicious chocolates. Also, it appears they specialize in dark chocolate so if you're looking for milk or white then you probably won't find it here. They do have Dubai chocolate which costs more than your standard chocolate and I did see some customers come in to buy them for Christmas. The employees and owner are wonderful and were very patient with the kids. Such a fun thing to do! This class books quickly and oftentimes booked out a couple months so sign up early! Our class lasted an hour and 15 mins which was perfect because they were ready to eat their chocolates! Located in the Pavilions shopping center to the right of the mall. Plenty of free and ample parking!

Yelp
Owner and craft chocolatier Jim's retirement/passion project, Seabreeze specializes in dark chocolate (my fave!) and is currently San Diego's only chocolate factory and retail shop, sourcing cacao beans directly from farmers to ensure quality, sustainability, and fair compensation. The end result is utterly fantastic. In addition to a wide selection of bonbons, truffles, bars, spreads, and more, this place offers both public and private chocolate-making classes either during or after store hours depending on your preference. Can't wait to bring my friends here for one suh-weet girls' night!

Yelp
Small chocolate shop in Carmel Valley with handcrafted chocolates and hot chocolate! We got a box of various chocolates to try and were not disappointed. Good place to purchase unique chocolate gifts.

Yelp
They make the viral Dubai Bar here!!! I happened to be walking by and saw the poster on their window. I got so excited!! Been wanting to try it since it's still so popular on TikTok. They sell it for around $40 on TikTok. Here they sell 3 different sizes- small, medium, and large. The small one is pretty small but it's a good size to start with to see if you like it. It was the best $10 I spent. The large bar was much more substantial at $35. I'll be getting that one next! Super friendly employees and cute chocolate shop. Happy to support this small business! Will be back real soon!

Yelp
Seabreeze is a small business whose owner Jim started making chocolate as a hobby. Now he has this store where they practice the art of making all natural high quality chocolate from scratch - meaning starting with cocoa beans. It was extremely impressive to see such a pure form of this process in person. They're constantly making chocolate and the sights and smells of the process are enlightening. They also offer hands-on chocolate making classes for a very reasonable price. Worth a stop to see what's going on and sample some chocolates.

Yelp
These chocolates are so fresh! I've been here twice already and the owner is so personable and nice. You can even ask for a demo! I got to see and learn how chocolate is made. He only sells dark chocolate l, which is my favorite kind. I love all the different flavors and varieties. There were some glow in the dark ones, a charcuterie kind, chocolate houses, and ornaments! Hot chocolate samples and chocolate making classes are also available as well. For my box, I chose matcha, toffee, salted caramel, peanut crunch, passionfruit infused, lavender, black sesame praline, earl grey, and chai. Hubby opted for magnolia brandy, horchata espresso, habanero, blood orange, pistachio praline, hazelnut dark, bourbon caramel, bourbon infused solid, and black bottom. Some of the fillings were liquids, which is not what I prefer, so the next time I asked for less liquidy ones haha. Overall, a great place to get some of the best chocolates for yourself or as a gift!

Yelp
Came here for a chocolate making class. It was a great experience. Very educational and the chocolates were excellent. One thing I really enjoyed about this premium chocolate is this is not exposed to the lead and arsenic other chocolates may have. Something I learned in the class.

Ulysses C.

Yelp
Our friends booked a chocolatier class for a group of 6th graders. It was great experience... educational- and we made our own chocolate truffles. PROS: Jim Lantry (owner) taught our class, (and Mel was helping us also). Both were very kind and patient... ample parking, cozy atmosphere, educational... the aroma of chocolate through the entire experience... CON: I had a water bottle with me during class... I should have brought milk... I swear if they sold milk there for $30 a pop I would have bought a few bottles. Thank you, Jim!

Yelp
Delicious, sumptuous, and beautiful chocolate at Seabreeze Chocolates. Run, jog, skip, and hop over to Carmel Valley for a taste of heaven. It isn't See's Chocolate, it is the grown-up version. My favorite is Dubai, but there are so many choices that it is hard to narrow it down.

Yelp
Food: Is chocolate food? Regardless, I've been searching for the best hot (not lukewarm, not cold) truly HOT not McDonalds scorching, it's going to scar you, but Starbucks hot, anyway, I ordered the mexican/cinnamon hot chocolate and was very chocolaty and rich. Iit was lukewarm, although, the girl did say, if it wasn't hot, she could put it in the microwave, but I was already in my car & didn't feel like going back. I tasted the chocolate in a jar spread with a cracker and that is super yum! Service: AMAZING, professional, friendly, great attitude! Ambiance: Great store with beautiful chocolates, great for gifts and more items to try!

Yelp
Gentlemen out there (and Ladies who want to give your partner a hint for a date night).... Behold... THE best place to have an affordable date night is HERE. No joke. Seabreeze offers a chocolate making class that's mind blowing. It was a three hour class that was hands on, informative, fun, and included bringing home all that you make (which was A LOT of chocolate truffles). The price was so ridiculously affordable and Jim, the owner, even provided some wine for the adults. I totally forget the girl's name who helped him out that night but she was so sweet and helpful. You get a mold that contains 21 cylinders to fill . You make the ganache that will fill the mold and you can flavor the ganache with any type of flavor you want. You then learn how to use their tempered chocolate machine to make the shells. He gives you dyed chocolate so you can also uses brushes to custom design each shell. It was so much fun and we met some really cool people who laughed and enjoyed the night as much as we did. It was a long event that could have been a bit shorter (I think we ended around 930p?). The chocolate we made were yummy and made great gifts to give to family and friends. We also were able to pick out two chocolates from their vast selection of the stores custom made truffles so that just made this event even more special. Thank you Jim and staff. We wish you success and blessings to this incredible shop.

Yelp
This place was not so much a chocolate place, but it was more of a chocolate inside filling place. And this place certainly did a great job making a unique filling that goes real well with the chocolate. But I did notice some fillings were loose and it will drip down your mouth. Trick is to eat it in 1 bite. Lol

Yelp
I'm so impressed with this charming new chocolate shop, handmade chocolates, customer service and the owner friendliness! We were welcomed into the store with a complementary chocolate, and we were provided superior assistance in making our chocolate selections. The dark chocolate sample was extremely smooth and creamy! We also tried the chocolate sauces. We tried several and purchased 2x of the Chocolate Merlot sauce because of its flavor complexity and we expect it to be an excellent topping on our ice cream later. Also purchased the Sabra Charcuterie bar(Dark orange ganache marmalade) & Tropical dream charcuterie bar (coconut, guava, pineapple)... looking forward to trying these with friends. The owner Jim has such a caring, thoughtful way of running his business. I really enjoyed reading his bio and how he came to be a Chocolatier.

Marlena

Yelp
Was really looking forward to trying their chocolate iced drink--but unfortunately, it was a huge letdown. The person working there took my order, and everything seemed fine until I took one sip and immediately gagged. The milk was clearly sour. I told him to try it himself because it tasted like it had been sitting there at least a month past its expiration date. He apologized profusely and even offered to go to Pavilions next door to buy fresh milk and make the drink again--which I appreciated--but by then the trust was gone. I get that it might not be a high-volume place, but checking expiration dates is basic. Most people do that at home. Why not in a food establishment? I can't in good faith recommend this place.

Yelp
First, this is a true high end chocolate place. Literally being made right by the door! The Dubai chocolate bar was AMAZING. Unlike other chocolates, the aftertaste goes down clean and nothing is gritty. The person behind the counter was wonderful and accommodating, and it's a shame it can't be a full on café!

Vladimir P.

Yelp
Delicious chocolate, very nice people! They are true bean-to-bar chocolate makers, they start with cacao beans and finish with amazing fine chocolate.

Amrita D.

Yelp
The best chocolates in Southern California--although the radius is possibly bigger. They mix the chocolate in-house (you can see some of this in the lovely little store) and hand-paint the bonbons. The dark chocolate bonbon is nothing short of a rich, deep melody going off in your head.
google avatar

Yelp
Try the hot chocolate, you won't regret it! So much more delicious than any "hot cocoa" that you've ever had before. Jim and his team are just incredible. We had our Girl Scout event there this past weekend, and the girls had so much fun making and decorating chocolate, and the chocolate we took home was absolutely incredible. Jim ensures that the cocoa he purchases comes from sustainable, fair-trade locations from around the world. Prices are fair/not bad, for a place in Del Mar. Inside of the store is beautiful and smells like heavenly chocolate. Can't wait to go back for Mother's Day gifts, birthday gifts, every holiday gifts..,

Catherine C.

Yelp
Took the private chocolate class. What a fun experience! And the truffles were amazing!

Lynne S.

Yelp
I reserved a private class for four as I wanted to do something special with my three granddaughters (15-21 yrs old) and we enjoyed it immensely. We learned about the history of chocolate and each of us designed and made 21chocolate truffles plus the filling (ganache) which we took home to share with friends and family.

Laura K.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed a private chocolate making class at SeaBreeze! Very informative about the whole chocolate process from cacao pod to truffle. We make 21 truffles will their absolutely delicious dark chocolate . So smooth and rich !
google avatar

Cala P.

Yelp
Delicious! I had been searching for a place that sells the Dubai chocolate bars I've seen online (chocolate filled with pistachio and kafaiti). I saw that Seabreeze makes them so I ran to get one today. The person at the counter was super friendly and made it a pleasant experience. The dark chocolate of the Dubai bar has a nice crunch when you bite into it and melts in your mouth, and the generous portion of pistachio filling in the middle is slightly salty with a nice crunch of the kafaiti. I had to stop myself from eating the whole bar in one sitting! I also got a few other chocolates and all of them were great quality with soft, flavorful centers. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Took my daughter last weekend for a chocolate making class, very cute concept however kids aren't really thrilled for dark chocolate super acquired taste even for adults.

Yelp
Great customer service and delicious chocolates. Just wish they had more gift box varieties for special occasions and holidays.

Yelp
I wanted to treat myself to a box of quality truffles. I decided to try Seabreeze Craft Chocolates, and I was surprised by their substantial menu. I've never seen a truffle store with more than a dozen flavors, but this shop had TONS! For sheer variety, this store would get five stars. I decided on four stars because most of the flavors I chose were so mild, I could barely taste the flavors. I have very sensitive taste buds (supertaster here), so if I can barely taste something then the flavor is mild. That being said, these all contain quality ingredients. But if you're looking to be blown away by bold flavors, this probably isn't the shop for you. But if you want to test a bold flavor, then these truffles are excellent because of their mild flavor profiles. Also, these are priced by weight, not pieces. I think the cost was $5.65/lb when I visited in July 2023. I bought 12 pieces for about ~$38. And the staff is wonderful and patient. The person who assisted me was endlessly patient while I debated over what flavors to choose. Since I didn't think to write down the flavors, it was hard for me to identify these unless the flavor was strong. These are the ones I bought, and the 3-star flavors are my favorite: -Brown sugar* -Margarita** (barely there flavor) -Chai*** -Horchata*** -Plain dark*** -Sweet caramel -Aztec spice*** -Merlot** (barely there flavor) -Whole hazelnut* -Vanilla cream* -Cardamon (no idea which one) -Mystery: maybe Bourbon? Anyway, give this shop a try just for the novelty of so many flavors and quality chocolate!

Yelp
I recently came across this establishment online when searching for the famous Dubai Chocolate. I was pleased to see that it was offered and I enthusiastically ordered three large bars and two medium bars at a hefty price. However, since I've tried this chocolate before, I was overly excited to order from a local establishment. Long story short, it took longer than anticipated to receive my order. The size of the Dubai chocolate bars were extremely overpriced for what you get. Although the chocolate was in a nice box and wrapped in plastic, I was very disappointed with the outcome. In comparison to what I've tried from another establishment, the Seabreeze version of the Dubai chocolate was too bitter in taste. I believe it's the type of chocolate used (which seems to taste more like a dark chocolate). The taste of the chocolate was very overbearing that it takes away from the true flavoring of the pistachio and kadayif which truly made this chocolate bar very popular. I can't speak to the other products that this establishment sells. I'm sure many of their other offerings are very good. However, if you have never tried a Dubai chocolate bar, I, respectfully, would not recommend Seebreeze Craft Chocolate's version of the chocolate bar.

Yelp
My boyfriend got me a box of these chocolates and WOW were they delicious. Came back again tonight and was wowed once again. Jim, the owner, had a great story and an amazing passion for chocolate. He spent 2 weeks studying chocolate making in Oahu before opening the store. Not only can you taste different chocolate spreads and teas in the store, you can also watch the chocolate being made behind the counter. There are tons of flavor options so you won't leave dissatisfied, and there is even an entire section dedicated to vegan chocolate. This place blows See's Candy and other chocolate franchises out of the water. Will definitely be coming back again and again!

Yelp
Holy moly this is the most amazing place ever! Try the Dubai bar and the chocolate tea! What an awesome place to take kids and out of towners

Jacklyn H.

Yelp
This place has the most delicious and beautiful chocolates I've ever tasted! My fiancée and I went here to sample chocolates to hand out as wedding favors for our 2025 wedding. John was the perfect chocolate tasting guide. He was informative, friendly, and passionate about the craft. He made sure we had a great experience and answered all our questions. He even told us about how they offer chocolate making classes at their factory! It was so refreshing to experience such incredible customer service. John, Nikki, and Leslie's enthusiasm made me even more excited for my big day!

Yelp
Taste-like-dream chocolate. Look beautiful, taste unreal. Creative flavors and decor. Plus Jim and his team are as sweet as the chocolate! Amazing gift option -- even better for treating yourself !

Sharon B.

Yelp
You can improve the Dubai chocolate bar! Not worth the hefty price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing quality chocolates!! We placed a chocolate bar made for slicing on our charcuterie board! And the chocolate walnut spread is divine!

Jack M.

Yelp
Me and my partner recently took a class here and the staff was super friendly. That being said I felt it was super steep for what we got to do. Basically all we did was decorate and mix while paying $150 for the 2 of us. It felt like 90% waiting for them to do it for you while you did nothing even though you're paying for a class.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow, Simply amazing Chocolate confections that are hand crafted individually and can taste in the exceptionally high quality ingredients in every bite. Great for any holiday, occasion and just a random Tuesday when you need a Chocolate pick me up.
google avatar

Vicky C.

Yelp
Very friendly and informative staff. Had a great experience in the store. One of the highlights was definitely the packaging for the chocolates. The box was a beautiful blue and it definitely elevates the experience. Regarding taste, note the chocolate here is on the darker side, so it's not overly sweet, which I like. Flavor-wise, it's pretty good, although not the best I've had. I only got two flavors during this visit - bourbon & passionfruit. My favorite so far is the vegan bourbon which has a ganache center. Everything was very well balanced. The passionfruit was good, but I felt the passionfruit flavor got lost within the flavor of the chocolate. Still not bad overall though.

Yelp
If this isn't a shining example of a local small business you hope to succeed, one must not exist. We happened to be walking by (we don't live in the area and were just going to the grocery store) and stopped in. Jim was fantastic and gave us a mini tour, let us see the chocolate at work, explained the chocolate making process to us and what sets his apart, and guided us well for a purchase with which we were very happy. From my limited experience with non-See's and Godiva/commercial chocolate, this is very good stuff and priced accordingly. You can buy singles so give it a shot!

Tianen J.

Yelp
Taste absolutely fresh. I've tasted a lot of the most famous and top rated chocolate. I can tell they use top quality ingredients and make the chocolate with love. The stuff was super helpful and helped me to pick the flavor. They also give samples. Store front is extremely clean. Since they make the chocolate in the store, the smell of the store is amazing!

Elaine F.

Yelp
Delicious chocolates and the truffle making class was so fun and informative! We learned about the cocoa business and what makes quality chocolate and learned from a true professional. It was a great ladies night!
google avatar

Stan S.

Yelp
This has replaced Neuhaus and Leonidas as my favorite chocolate! In addition, some of the chocolates have their own excellent "home made" peanut butter in them.

San M.

Yelp
We had reserved this for a girls outing . We had a blast making our own dark chocolate. Let them know ahead of you need sugar free chocolate they will accommodate the request
google avatar

Benjamin J.

Yelp
Grand opening was today! My wife and I live nearby and have been walking past this place for quite some time. As chocolate aficionados, we're happy to see it's finally open. What's more, the chocolates are incredible. Not too sweet, you can taste the attention to detail/ingredients, and the prices are more than fair. I'd recommend you try the dark chocolate w/ peppermint.

Yelp
What an awesome shop! When we walked in we were greeted immediately with a warm smile and an offer for a chocolate shop tour, complete with optional tastings. Omg this place, the chocolate, the artistic designs, the friendly service, and of course the incredible taste! It was hard to leave. Lena helped us pick out some tasty treats, and she was great! Well priced and excellent quality - we found our new go-to gift buying destination in Del Mar. Love love love!
