Sears Fine Food is a true San Francisco classic! you can really feel the history and charm the moment you walk in. I had the spinach omelet with extra mushrooms and an orange juice, everything was amazing. The omelet was perfectly cooked, fresh, and flavorful. Service was fast, friendly, and efficient. Love this historic spot - definitely a must-visit when you’re in SF!

Can't fault this at all. In a city and country where food prices seem to be soaring, this spot is still offering reasonably priced and perfectly prepared breakfasts. Ambience is classic, service was polite, prompt and professional, and the smoked salmon benedict perfectly prepared. With a tomato juice to accompany it...and excellent start to the day. Sears Fine Food has been serving San Francisco since 1938, an absolute institution just off Union Square. The 18 famous pancakes, light, fluffy, absolute heaven in every bite. The eggs Benedict with smoked salmon, perfectly poached, silky salmon, hollandaise with just the right tang. And that thick-cut bacon, crispy on the outside, meaty and rich inside, proper bacon! Everything executed spot-on. A classic San Francisco gem still at its finest. Absolutely amazing.

This place has been around for a long time, and it shows in the best way, with authentically old pieces all over the interior. The food is excellent if a little pricey (but what isn't pricey in this city?) and the service is fast and friendly.

Wow, we had some of the best food of our lives here. The NY strip, lobster ravioli and the Lee's egg's Benedict the next morning for breakfast. We stayed at the chancellor hotel which is literally next door. I must for the food and old world atmosphere if you're making a stop in San Francisco

Firstly visited in 2014 and enjoyed great breakfast with the family. In 2025, returned to buy their pancakes mix, which is winning and delicious, for home cooking. Thanks for keeping up and sustaining such a nice historic place for several decades.

We enjoyed our nostalgic breakfast experience here (open since 1939)! Great mocha coffee with whipped cream, great fruit bowl, great fresh eggs, great hash browns (a little mushy in the middle), great bacon and great sausage. One of the best breakfasts we've had. Also, great service and great music of the era too!

Cozy and old timey place. Lots of good food options for reasonable prices. Went with the fish and chips, fisherman's platter, and I'm really happy with my choice. Got a bunch of calamari and some deep fried shrimps which were both delicious. The fish itself was also really good, not too heavy and not too light, crispy, flavorful and not dry. The chips is probably the weak point, a bit plain and boring. The coleslaw also didn't really add much but to have a bit of green on the plate. Lots of good beers on tap as well, thoroughly enjoyed that.

I had heard that Sears Fine Food was a popular place for locals and tourists and had to try it. We started with the a couple appetizers...Brussels sprouts and Calamari. Both were very tasty. I tried the burger and it was okay. The service was great and attentive. The interior decor was definitely took us back in time , a reflection of when the restaurant originally opened in 1938.

Ordene la especial "Al" y me encanto! Ordered the "Al" breakfast and it was delicious! Corned beef hash, small pancakes, maple syrup and eggs. Sweet and savory bites tasted great after an hour of ice skating. Breakfast ends at 2pm. Easy location, good service, clean bathrooms, no lines and an old San Francisco feel!

Sears Fine Foods is your standard fare diner with some class. They do Eggs Benedict with great consistency as are most of their breakfast dishes. Year after year the menu almost never changes. Great for tourists in the Union Square hotel district. There can be a line outside, so if you are really hungry go to the Ihop. A little pricy for diner eats, but service and atmosphere is great. There can be long waiting periods for ordering and serving. Very clean considering how long they have been operating. The coffee there is just okay and at 10 dollars a person, (in 2024) you might want to bring your own.

Another mandatory stop on my God-father's (walking) tour of San Francisco. His advice: Come here for the pecan waffle. It was great advice. The waffle was delicious, the service fantastic (Laura Pa.) and the ambiance super cool. I enjoyed the old photos, and the accolades. If it was just a bit later in the day, I might have had a drink at the bar. A short walk from Union Square, and the trolley, it was a great stop to get off at. Take the trolly up the hill, have a waffle, walk you way downhill to the bottom.

The crab cakes were small compared to the price. They were just ok but the sauce was good. We had the lobster ravioli, which was very disappointing. No flavor in the sauce or filling at all! Even adding my own salt and pepper could not save this meal. Service was nice, kind of curt hostess. Ambiance is fine, nothing really special. We won't be back!

The restaurant is quaint inside and the service was good and attentive. Overall , the food was just okay and slightly overpriced. To start, with the pricing and the simplicity of the bread I feel it should have been complimentary. My partner said his ravioli was fine , but nothing special. As a pescatarian, I often order salmon when it's available. The salmon was a good portion, but there could have been more veggies. The potatoes were pretty simple and a little undercooked and the salmon was not tender and a little dry. It was a good meal, but something I could have made at home. We were disappointed for the quality with the price

If you are in the Union Square area of SF and are looking for a breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner spot...Sears is the place. A busy packed restaurant that is an established iconic business in SF! Great fast service, ample menu with tons of choices to satisfy any appetite. A great place to gather before a show, while shopping or touring.

Typical deli fare. Came in with friends for breakfast Everything was as expected with pancakes, omelets, juice and coffee. All good and a clean place

I spent quite a bit of time researching must eat restaurants in SF. We finally came here and it did not disappoint. The food was excellent. Our group had everything from octopus, to risotto, to the fisherman's platter and all were very good. To top it off our server Amit was EXCELLENT. Super nice, very attentive, and gave excellent suggestions. We will definitely be back when in SF!

Back in San Francisco with the wife visiting the kid who is in college in SF. The kid had some things to do one morning and the wife and I were in a hotel across the street from Sears. We had been here before many years ago and we remembered that we liked it. Off we trekked avoiding feces, needles and walking zombies now commonplace in San Francisco. Was a short walk, so not too much to prevent us from getting to the restaurant. We were there on a Saturday morning around 8am, so it was busy, but not packed and no line. When we were shown to our table, there was a table that the wife saw up against one of the front windows so we asked to be seated there and it was no problem. The waiter was quick to come and take our drink order. Diet coke for me and, coffee and a Mimosa for the wife. I didn't want to drink since we were taking cable car later and I wanted to be sharp in case the driver needed help pulling on the brake to stop us from flying out of control down one of those steep axx hills! After looking through the menu, I had to choose my typical fancy restaurant (it is called Sears Fine Food) breakfast item, the corned beef hash and eggs. The wife ordered scrambled eggs with sausage and hash browns. The food appeared quickly, even with the bustling crowd of hungry tourists packing the place. The wife's scrambled eggs: Yellow and white, not all yellow. A huge pet peeve of the wife. Scrambled eggs should be scrambled, not tossed. The wife's sausage and has browns: very good. My over medium eggs: Over medium well... My corned beed hash: Got to give it to them, they make their own and the corned beef flavor was evident. It was a bit dry and as a corned beef hash connoisseur, I do prefer the Libby brand corned beef fresh from the can. All was hot, so that was nice. The food was a solid 2.5 stars, so a bit disappointing since the prices were, typically these days, outragious. Not to mention that, but San Fran adds on multiple fees and taxes and charges, oh my! $90 for pretty simple breakfast for two. Yikes! Our sever took very good care of us, so the 3 stars is for the food, not the service. Go. Eat Somewhere Else. HAVE FUN! p.s. I laughed at some of the comments about the decor. It is eclectic and is fun to look at all of the stuff spread around the place.

The food was really good and fresh. Large variety of dishes . Service was also great I would definitely come back if I'm staying in the area. The ambiance was really like a nice coffee shop the vibe was great. Perfect location to many hotels .

Lets first talk about parking, there is none lol. You probably have to look for a parking garage when you're in San Francisco. Food: this is the second time that we've been here and the food is good. I don't know if everything is oooh soooo good. Just depends on what you order. For example, my friend ordered the linguine and she added chicken breast. The chicken was like it was out of a can. She finished the pasta but left most of the chicken. Now Pan Toasted Salmon, 100% recommended. The salmon was cooked to perfection, the buttered asparagus so tasty and the potatoes were tender. I also recommend their clam chowder, it's has the right proportion of meat and potatoes. The service: is excellent, all the servers we encountered were very polite and attentive. ask them for recommendations and they'll tell you what's good. Ambiance: it's well lit. It's has like a very vintage look, maybe like the early 1900s era? Ummm, there's photos of old photographs and military things. It's also very historic to San Francisco. I like it. I totally recommend this place if you're in the area.

I have to say, the choice for decor seemed a bit odd. I'm not sure I fully understand the concept, as it appeared more like a mix match collection of stuff that didn't go together. I personally did not care for the World Famous 18 Swedish Pancakes. I thought they tasted grainy and dry. The eggs over easy, chicken sausage, hash browns, and toast were earlier to digest. We came here because it was very close to our hotel. Service was decent and the food came out quickly.

My mother and I recently visited Sears Fine Foods in San Francisco, expecting a fine dining experience, but unfortunately, it fell far short of my expectations. The Ambiance: Upon arrival, I was disappointed to find that the ambiance did not match the fine dining experience I was hoping for. The plastic-covered menu with curled corners was a major letdown and gave the place a very casual and unrefined feel. It was not what I expected from a restaurant that markets itself as "fine dining." The Experience: The overall atmosphere felt outdated and lacked the elegance and sophistication I was looking forward to. The presentation of the menu set the tone for the rest of the experience, and it was clear that attention to detail was lacking. Decision to Leave: Given the initial impression, we decided not to stay for a meal. Instead, we left and headed to Morton's around the corner, where we had a much more satisfying dining experience. Overall Impression: I was very disappointed with Sears Fine Foods. If you're looking for a true fine dining experience in San Francisco, I would recommend looking elsewhere. There are plenty of other options in the area that offer a more refined and enjoyable dining experience.

Pleasantly surprised by the food. When I first walked in I thought it might be a typical dinner type of a place. It has that vibe but the food was pretty good!! -pan roaster salmon was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. -Dungeness crab chowder was very tasty as well. Didn't see much crab but really good flavor -Fresh squeezed orange juice was also o so perfect!

Service and ambiance is great, but the food quality is not good. Eggs Benedict, not good! Hollandaise sauce packaged, not prepared well. Banana bread isn't the same quality.

sigh...i remember the days when mr. sears greeted us at the door of this venerable breakfast place on powell. and the line snaking out the door, if you did not arrive early. and the small dollar pancakes-18 of them, i remember... with warm syrup. and a bottomless cup of joe. it's just not the same. bigger pancakes (maybe there was too much waste?? who knows.) coffee was fine, not stellar. service was very good. it's just different from before.

My first visit here and it was easy to get in and get a seat at the bar. I was solo today but they can even accommodate pretty large groups as they have multiple floors. I tried the Mocha Latte and it was delicious, then for breakfast had a veggie omelette which comes with hash browns but you can sub large home style potatoes. I like my potatoes a bit more crispy so I'd probably stick with hashbrowns if you are the same way. I also saw giant burgers which looked delicious and some crazy French toast whipped cream and strawberries extravaganza which looked delicious. My waiter was kind and edited my order after I had placed it even though it was busy which was appreciated. Would definitely return again when in the area.

An overpriced letdown serving lowly diner fare at fine dining prices. With mini portions of regular pancakes/hash-browns, stale ambiance and minimal service, no ol'timey nostalgia justifies the ripoff at this "institution"--just your curiosity.

We were staying next door but I wanted to try Sears for breakfast. On a Sunday morning we arrived around 9/9:30 AM. We were promptly seated even though there were several people waiting as well. I opted for the two eggs, hash browns, and sausage link breakfast. It was very good! My wife had the pancakes with her breakfast and I tried a few of those and they were very light. Our waiter was friendly and efficient but not over the top. Restaurant itself has a classy/traditional feel to it. This is a San Francisco staple and I highly recommend it. Good food, good location right there in Union Square. Definitely worth the stop.

The food was tasty. I appreciate that they were able to accommodate our group of 8 people on short notice during the holiday season. We have been in for both lunch and dinner, both were good and the service was friendly. I will be back.

Looking for some good diner style food at a San Francisco mainstay restaurant? Then this is the spot! I was here YEARS ago, and my friends and I popped in for a late lunch. Service was attentive, the menu extensive and they have that old diner vibe but sort of in an upscale way given they serve drinks. Sure, you will pay more than you would normally for a salad or sandwich but if you are in this area, you are likely touristing. The Swedish pancakes are a must if you are a pancake fan, everything else on the menu we ordered tasted fresh/great.

After walking back and forth past three days in a row, we finally decided to have lunch here. The service was so good and it's a historically interesting place. You don't find many restaurants anymore that have been in business over 80+ years! There's a lot of nostalgic pictures to look at as you enter and the ambience is relaxing yet classy. We shared a Louie Louie and Rueben sandwich, both very delicious! Don't let the old sign out front fool you. It's not a dive, it's a very nice place to eat with very good food and the prices are comparable with other places in the neighborhood that are about the same but not as good! We'll definitely be back for breakfast next time!

This place has your classic, old school diner vibes. The food is priced well and tasted good. And the mini pancakes were perfect to share. Food-wise, it's a solid breakfast spot. My only wish would be to have a better breakfast cocktail selection.

Super grateful they were open on new years day! I had the ham and cheese omelette. My boyfriend had the Swedish pancakes (eaten before I got a chance to take a picture). My omelette was pretty standard, swedish pancakes were delicious! Definitely would recommend the Swedish pancakes! It was packed, so getting our orders placed took a little longer than expected. The interior has lots of seating, including the bar. It's a great breakfast diner experience.

Disappointed. I was looking forward to eating here but it was terrible. I'm not sure what happened here. The steak was somewhat tough and tasteless and my wife's lobster was the same. The risotto was ok and the mashed potatoes too. The service was absolutely fine and the servers were kind and helpful. The restaurant was what I remembered but the food overshadowed the whole experience sadly. I gave 2 stars for the ambiance and service. Sadly the food wasn't to match.

Old time diner located on Powell Street near Union Square and all the nice historical hotels with history dating back to 1938. According to the restaurant's website, they are well known for their Swedish pancakes made from a recipe inherited by one of the owner's wife's Swedish family. I don't remember if we tried their Swedish pancakes last time we visited (a while ago), but on a recent visit, I had a glass of Cava, Beet and Goat Cheese salad, and crispy calamari. All delicious! Service was nice also. I got there midafternoon after a late appointment, so the place was pretty empty.

A diner with history...a perfect place for comfort food. We came here for breakfast on a trip to San Francisco and then came back again for dinner. The servers were all very attentive with great tips when we were between items to select. The dining room is classics 1950's cafe with great photos and memorabilia on the walls. Truly a great place to get your comfort food on.

I liked Sears enough the first time (about a year ago, forgot to review), that I gave it a second shot for lunch. I chose to sit at the bar since I was solo. Staff were fantastic; friendly and efficient. I just wanted something simple so opted for the chicken wings, naked with sauce on the side and extra crispy, and a side of fries. Food came out hot, fast and exactly as I ordered it. I didn't realize a side of fries would be a gigantic basket, but they were good. Wings were perfection. Recommend, especially if you're staying in the area and want a quick bite.

Nothing fine dining about the food they serve. Tried them again for brunch hoping it has gotten a bit better. Unfortunately for us the food and service are on par with a free hotel breakfast for the price of a Michelin star restaurant. $5 drip coffee that's been sitting for hours with no refills? Omelets made from a mix and waffles and whipped cream all from store bought packages? For a $30 pp breakfast? Are you fucking serious? From a year ago: Went in for dessert in the evening. The place was death. The chef's selection chocolate mousse cake had a weird taste to it. Didn't trust to eat it. The bread pudding tasted mediocre and was microwaved. I expect much better when paying $33 for dessert and some hot water.

Everything was slightly better than middle of the road, but nothing spectacular and nothing horrendous. Prices on par with Union Square, so go a few blocks away in almost any direction and find the same quality with better prices or better quality with the same prices. However, if you have to stay in the area, it's a good place for a relatively quick bite without being true fast food. Service was good and decor is cute old-time stuff.

This place is so cool! Love the old world ambiance and the service is great. Especially when you take into fact that this is a diner. They are known for their Swedish pancakes, so of course I had to get some! Loved them, the menu says 18 pancakes. Don't let that intimidate you. They are silver dollar size and very thin. After you finish you don't find yourself miserably full. Sounds crazy, trust me. I also got a side of corned beef hash. Really solid hash. Wasn't sure what to expect, but I'd definitely get it again!

The bacon was horrible, and how can you mess up bacon, really. Super disappointing. Been here before and it seems to have gotten dangerous food wise. Service and ambiance were great, food however, never again. Plus, it's crazy salty, even for a seafood restaurant.

If you have a smaller appetite, recommend ordering a half order of the pancakes. Then you can also add your favorite side order. I picked the corned beef hash. So good, so retro! Very good service, a comfortable ambiance. Will definitely be back.

Such a wonderful place--and it's been graciously serving good food for 75 years. We asked for a table by a window, and happily watched the traffic and people negotiating steep Powell Street. I had a blue cheeseburger--delicious! and my friend had the rightly renowned pancakes. So much has changed for the worse in San Francisco--but not Sears. It's has great as ever.

This place was great! The interior was super cool, old timey and interesting. The prices were just a little inflated because it's a bit of a tourist trap. But the pancakes were great. Also getting a side of bacon is so worth it even though it's expensive bc there's so much The trolley pulls in right by it so it's great!

What a CUTE little place near Union Square. The moment you walk in you are immediately taken back many decades with the retro floors, black and white photos, vintage coat hangers, and so much more. The ambiance is amazing. The restaurant serves breakfast a little later than usual and begins lunch around 11. It was perfect, because we were able to choose off either menu during the brunch hour that we went. I chose the calamari and my boyfriend had a hamburger. Both plates were delicious. The service was great. I definitely recommend if you need a breakfast or lunch spot near Union Square, SF! Will I be back? Yes!

I ordered the pecan waffle and it was delightful. The portion was large. This diner feels like you're stepping back over a decade. It was fun vibes, and they were very accommodating for our large party.

I went for Thanksgiving dinner today and was disappointed. The butternut squash soup was too salty; the salad was flavorless; I ordered dark turkey meat got both dark and light and it was not fresh, tough/dry on edges, and the gravy was too salty. I couldn't eat it, probably the worst Thanksgiving turkey I've ever had. On the positive side, the mashed potatoes were good along with the pumpkin pie. The cost was high for what I got--$50.00--and they deducted $10.00 for the disappointing turkey. I will not be returning.

Had the fish and chips and they were horrible. The fish was like rubber and I'm not exaggerating. It was really difficult to eat. And barely got any fries. And this place came recommended from someone.

Went there and got my food, FOOD HAD HAIR, the service was so bad! McDonald's could do better And this was so filthy. Yuck

We had a great time here! Super homey cute interior decorations, decent portions, good vibes. The pancakes were definitely the star of the show; they were smooth and flavorful, the texture almost a cross between a fine-grain cornbread and a normal buttermilk pancake. SO tasty, especially with the butter and syrup spread on top. Perfect little bite sizes, too! The eggs florentine were nothing too special, but a decent meal for sure. Just standard. The accompanying hashbrowns were a bit dry, but easily remedied with some ketchup. But my friend loved the spinach; it was well cooked and almost tasted as if it were mushroom-infused (in a good way!). And the mimosas were tasty! Not super strong, but a fun accompaniment, and they had yummy pulp from the orange juice :)

It's fine. The place smelled like a cross between a college bar and a cafeteria. Bathrooms had really strong-smelling air freshener. Food was ok, nothing to write home about. Went with a couple of friends, none of us are tourists but figured we'd give the place a try since it's supposed to be "historical." I ordered the Dungeness crab chowder cup. Tasted like it came from a can and they added maybe half an ounce crab meat. I also ordered the salmon, which was actually quite good. Both my friends ordered sandwiches. No one was wowed. Coffee tasted like diner coffee. Service was good. Note that Sears is known for their pancakes but none of us were really feeling like ordering a sugar-carb bomb for lunch. So maybe order that if you go and maybe you'll be wowed.

As a local, I loved having breakfast or lunch at Sears. However, something has changed! Now, when you are a woman sitting alone at the bar, no one comes over to take your order, unless you get up and ask for help. I have gone in at different times, the same thing happens. Other women friends go in, sit at the bar too, and have to get up to ask for help. My husband goes in alone, sits at the bar, and he said, "Women and men rush over to take his order." Now we go across the street to the Beacon (2nd floor in the old Sr. Frances Drake Hotel) for a wonderful breakfast or lunch. You might pay a bit more, but no one will over look you!

Well, the nearly empty plate of their famous Swedish pancakes should give some indication of how fabulous Sears is. Add to that the history and ambiance is and I definitely label this a Must See while in San Francisco. The servers are distinguished and outstanding and the prices are more than fair. Be sure to go for breakfast as no reservations are required and wait times are relatively short during the week. Enjoy!

Restaurant near my hotel. Came for breakfast. Very old decor. Looks family owned. Waiters were attentive and knowledgeable. Had a breakfast 2 eggs over medium, 2 chicken sausage, 2 pieces of bacon, 2 pancakes. Although the bacon was largely tasteless, everything else was fine, If fine means adequate.
