Portland Coffee Shop Matta Cafe & House Music Bar Secret Grove to Open | Eater Portland

"Transforming the same venue into a cocktail bar with live house music, Secret Grove will start music around 5 p.m. on days it’s open and program varied nights — Thursday leaning toward jazzy R&B and house, Friday showcasing local acts plus Latin house and reggaeton house, and Saturday as the “flagship” night focused on minimal, tribal, and Afro house — with longer-running theme nights like Vibru aiming for a laid-back, dance-friendly vibe. The evening menu will tilt Latin American, emphasizing agave spirits and aguardiente, and include approachable, music-friendly drinks such as the Verbena (gin, cranberry, and ginger ale). Secret Grove grew out of Daniel Maloney’s history of underground parties and pop-ups and intends to be a communal space where people can enjoy music and be social; the physical layout includes communal bench seating designed by Colombia’s Julio Jimenez, and some dishes served at the bar will be specific to the concept." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Had a few cocktails here they had a special going on for espresso cocktails so I’ve got a espresso martini and another drink. The coffee was pretty bitter, but the martini was more balanced than the drink. I chose pretty place. Didn’t try anything else from the menu, friendly staff.

Connor made me my espresso martini and it was wonderful!! Highly recommend visiting here and maybe moving the Secret Garden to number 1 on the best espresso martini place in Portland!

From entry to exit i had a fantastic experience at secret grove. The cocktails were delicious and the service was quick, fun and kind. The music and energy of the room created an atmosphere unlike any other since the dinosaurs were boogying down in the mesozoic era! But the true crowing jewel of this venue was a bartender by the name of Camryn. Like a windswept sun goddess she effortlessly created fragrent and approachable beverages that greased the wheels on this crazy train we called life. Watching her make drinks made Michelangelo painting the cistene chaple look like a vulture picking at roadkill. To catch but a glimpse of this sultry lynx in action is enough to make you wanna return again and again. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes she rebirth new purpose and hope not only in myself and those surrounding me, but in the very idea of why we all come out to experience consciousness as a whole. Anyway. Go to secrect grove. Also I met the owner and manager and they were awesome! Conner the other bartender was super cute and funny too! Well worth your time and almighty dollar.

Had a great night here! Connor the bartender makes great cocktails, I love the fresh espresso in the espresso martini. Daisy, the bar manager, is also such a sweetheart. Everyone working helped create a good atmosphere. Good vibes, good music, good cocktails. Will be visiting again soon!

I’m from Spokane. I love it there. One thing about me is…it’s hard to get me out of Spokane. It’s home. It’s comfortable. It’s a place I’ve established myself in. I like to think it’s where I was destined to be. On a quick vacation to visit my ex-boyfriend, I happened upon this bar. Consumed by the vibes, I stayed. Marc, let me say, gave me a drink. I then sat myself down in reflection. Enjoying perhaps the greatest drink of my life. It takes a lot to make me fall in love with a place. I’ve fallen. For Portland. Hard. Thank you.

This has been on my want to go list for a while. I thought the pictures of the interior had a fun aesthetic. Went here on a Saturday night and they had a great DJ. The cocktails are amazing especially the espresso martini but I definitely couldn't have more than one so I tried the firing squad and another tequila cocktail. I tried my friends drinks too and they were all great. Will definitely be back.

Not only does this place have the best espresso martini in Portland, but the music is always on point. You can tell that it is run by people who genuinely care about the experience they are creating.

Yelp
Evenings transform the Mata Café space into Secret Grove Collective, one of Portland's most alluring new cocktail bars. Guests will first notice the large garage doors opening up the space. Upon entering, you'll be greeted by lowfi music, tropical plants, warm-climate hues and atmosphere, and a team that really knows what they're building. As the night builds, you can expect unique mixes from some of Portland's newest and best DJs. This is when the crowds arrive. I was lucky to recently spend several hours here, celebrating recent events with international friends. We started our evening around 6:30pm, and, the bartender crew was a slam-dunk for us. I am known to be pretty indecisive when it comes to menus, and, they were incredible at making us custom drinks or menu items with a twist. It's lucky to stumble upon a bar that is intentional, social, and ready to have fun. After a few rounds of drinks, Travis, the man of our night, decided to try a few drink recipes out on us that he had planned to make later that weekend. We obliged, and were grateful that our social energies had been met with a good time from him, too. As the music and crowd began to grow, we made new friends. In Portland, this is rare at a bar/club. However, Secret Grove brings out the most international and diverse group of the community that we have experienced, and we are the type of people to connect with strangers. So, if you are on the hunt for a good time, international music, vibes, and new friends, stop on down here. My only feedback would be to add a few bartenders later in the evening to keep the drinks and food flowing faster. The food menu could have a few more late-night items added, since, we and others, did leave to have a better array of food to snack on. The team could easily make more money and keep guests for longer with a few tweaks. This is definitely my new go-to Pearl bar/club. Can't wait to see how it grows overtime.

Yelp
This place is a great lounge and offers coffee cocktail happy hr from 5p-8p. All coffee drinks are $10 which is a steal for the quality you get. They had a live DJ come in around 9ish. Don't really think he was needed but that's just my opinion. Service was excellent! I would come back.
