How Mabel’s Gone Fishing Makes San Diego’s Best Mackerel Dish | Eater

"A bakery that supplies the country loaves essential to the mackerel toast, following a disciplined production schedule: the team begins baking country loaves around 3 a.m. daily and delivers them to the restaurant around noon so the bread can be served fresh and un-toasted. The loaf’s process—from first ferment until it comes out of the oven—spans three days, yet the pastry chef stresses that for this use the bread “has to be made day of,” making the bakery’s timing and practices integral to the finished dish." - Annie Harrigan

Nice coffee shop with quality food options. Ordered a cappuccino and breakfast sandwich. The coffee was little stronger than I take it. Not a negative just a consideration depending on how strong you like your coffee. Went early so easy ordering and sitting at a table but it definitely picked up as we sat there.

Google
Came here for Sunday brunch and really appreciated the healthy/ artisan vibes. The quiche was the tallest I’ve ever had and tasted rich. They have a perfect balance of indulgence and healthy - due to the fresh baked goods options. I liked that the waiter asked details about how I wanted my matcha latte such as type of milk, flavored sweetener options etc. The al fresco dining made this space stand out! This is a definite yes for me.

Google
Loved that they had so many sourdough treats. They had this strawberry earl gray baked good that tasted so heavenly. Loved well the food and the customer service was awesome. Oh also, they sell their sourdough starter! Just ask!

Secret Sisters is an absolute delight! I stopped in on a whim and was immediately drawn to the warm, inviting atmosphere. I ordered the Olive Oil Cake, and wow—it was moist, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with just the right amount of sweetness. You can tell they use quality ingredients and put a lot of love into their baking. The service was friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. This place is a true hidden gem in South Park, and I can’t wait to come back and try more from their menu. Highly recommend!

Google
Sourdough lovers pull up. Secret sister has absolutely top notch bread and pastries, with a truly sour flavor that I feel like many sourdoughs don’t quite achieve. The pastries have such unique flavors. The morning bun options are absolutely exquisite, usually some gooey, doughy cinnamon flavors with all sorts of additions - this one had earl grey and strawberry rhubarb. I always get a baguette if they aren’t sold out, slice it, and freeze it so I can heat it up to perfection when I’m ready for a slice. Come early for the biggest selection and if you’re hoping to snag a baguette. To note: plenty of vegetarian options, limited vegan (maybe just bread), usually a couple gf pastries

Google
One of my favorite bakeries closed down (Flour Power), so I began the search for a new bakery that makes custom cakes. I stumbled upon Secret Sister and noticed all the different cake flavors, fillings, and icings. Bingo! Bookmarked and saved for later! Well turns out my husband pleasantly surprised me with a couple of cakes slices and the country sourdough loaf for Mother’s Day. Wowww… the fennel chocolate cake with orange malt vanilla cream cheese was incredible and knocked my socks off. The vanilla chiffon cake with strawberry earl grey jam was just as good, but very subtle and light. After tasting these two cakes slices, it is confirmed that Secret Sister will be making my next custom cake. I typically buy my sourdough loaves from local micro bakeries, but it is nice to know Secret Sister makes an amazing country sourdough. So happy to finally try this place!

Google
Nice team. Nice guests. Top notch baguette. Good cappuccinos. Lightning fast internet. Cleeean restrooms Amazing cozy outside seating. And nice music.

Google
I've been wanting to try this bakery for some time. It is often very busy and the patio fills up. I have a dog so need to sit outside. Went at 8 today and enjoyed the bake goods, egg sandwich and coffee. On the egg sandwich- great roll and quality ham and cheese. Pecan bun was delicious. This will be my new go-to bakery when going to the dog park.

Yelp
The coffee and pastries are spectacular here at Secret Sister. We stopped by around 11am on a Sunday and were able to snag a table for two indoors. They were reserving several patio tables for the lunch service at Rose cafe that was opening up. The place was packed! We ordered the breakfast sandwiches and two iced coffees. I was tempted to try one of their sourdough pastries and settled on a chocolate chip cookie to go. It was soft and chewy - delish! I love the cozy feeling with the tables and couches inside. It's a great place to enjoy a meal, read a book or get some work done

Yelp
Highlights: - Delicious matcha! Perfection over ice with sweetened with some honey and almond milk. - Perfectly salty sourdough salted chocolate chip cookies! - Rich buttercream cake slices in interesting flavor profiles. Not super sweet, either, which I appreciate! - Baguette sandwiches, yum! The one area I would love to see improvement in is their service. It is something I have noticed at the Rose as well. It can be inconsistent depending on the day and who helps you. Sometimes they are so sweet and happy to be there and well, sometimes it is the opposite. Regardless, the quality of the baked goods and drinks keeps me coming back. Definitely worth the visit if you live in the area or are visiting.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast/pastry places in San Diego. I've been thrice now. I got the carnitas hash the first two times because it was so good the first. This last time I got the OG breakfast. Also good but I preferred the hash. I don't like how they ask if you have reservations for breakfast though. It just seems pretentious. Then they look around at the totally empty dining room like, "I'll see what I can do." And the seating was just as open by the time we left. I don't think they have that much demand. Lol Also recommend the olive oil cake if you want something on the less sweet side.

Yelp
Cute place with indoor and outdoor seating. You order at the counter then find a seat. The employees are kind, helpful, and patient. They brought all our things to where we were seated. The breakfast sandwich was decent. The flavor was definitely good. If it was all warmed up it would be so much better! The chicory cold brew is more bitter and acidic and I didn't really notice the chicory flavor. The chai also needed to be waaaay hotter and less watery. If it had more of that chai flavor and actually hot or even just warmer than it was, it would've been delicious. The citrus sourdough donut had good flavor, but again, we wished it was warmed up. The breakfast bun was very tasty but also would've been better warmed. Maybe we should've asked but it would've been nice if they asked us if we wanted them heated up. It felt a little expensive to have lukewarm chai and cold food that we thought would come out warm.

Yelp
A South Park staple. Me and my family love walking our dog and toddler here for some coffee and their yummy bread. We always get their cheddar gougere bread and their olive oil cake. They have a really yummy breakfast sandwich that uses the cheddar gougere bread and it is rich and delicious. Sometimes we'll just buy the bread and make a sandwich out of it at home ourselves. The staff there are very friendly and nice. I took my toddler here for a mommy and me date and they offered her free milk and waved hi at her every time my toddler would say hi which was a lot haha. They have some tables inside but when the weather is nice, which is often in SD, we like to sit outside under the umbrella. Only problem is you have to find street parking if you're not from the area.

Yelp
I love this spot! Inventive pastries that never disappoint and a very accessible, community vibe. This is where I go if I want a little adventure with my morning coffee :)
google avatar

Yelp
Cute spot and they have lots of options for drinks and food. I just stopped by for a loaf of sourdough and it was so yummy! The staff was sweet and even offered to slice my loaf. Parking was a little tricky but that's because it was a weekend and I found a spot a few blocks away. I want to come back and try some of their breakfast options

Yelp
Definitely one of San Diego's hidden gems. Came one morning and got the Citrus olive oil coffee cake and the garlic cheddar chive gorgere. The citrus olive oil coffee cake was the bees knees, dense and moist, not overly sweet. I could eat this any day, it screamed for a cup of coffee to go with it. I'd get this every time. The garlic cheddar chive gorgere was good but not what I was in the mood for. It was more of a savory pastry. Light and savory, I think it would be good made into a breakfast sandwich with eggs cheese and sausage or bacon. There isn't a large sign outside only a small decal on the window, guess that's what makes it a secret. They are next to Rose wine bar and I think the food for the wine bar comes from the secret sister kitchen. There are a small handful of seats inside and out, but I'd say it's mostly a take out type of place. They have a 150 year old sourdough starter which is something I'll have to.comeback and try next time.

Yelp
Super cute and quaint local spot. Lots of pastry options as well as bread and breakfast options. Folks were attentive and was willing to answer my question about what's their favorite thing and why. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with ham for myself and also a gluten free brownie for a friend. The bread on the breakfast sandwich was super unique, almost like a soda bread bun. Loved the sandwich and would order another the next time. Looking forward to visiting again trying a coffee as well.

Yelp
Street parking was easy on a Sunday morning - matcha and breakfast sandwich were delish!

Yelp
Secret Sister has an amazing selection of sourdough.  The baked goods are based on a 150 year old sourdough starter.  I first tasted their sourdough while dining at Mabel's Gone Fishing. Sourdough baguette has a crunchy crust and full of sourdough flavor.  Loved it. Cookies had an interesting texture.  Not crunchy and not soft and gooey.  Rather kind of inbetween.  I liked the flavor. Sourdough country loaf had a crunchy crust and soft and fluffy insides.  Loved the sourdough flavor.  Usually french bread is my favorite but I love the sourdough flavor here as it has some sourdough flavor but not too much sour flavor. Customer service was excellent.  Staff was friendly and sliced my country loaf for me.

Yelp
We had a lunch reservation at an Italian restaurant in South Park recently and decided to visit this bakery beforehand. Secret Sister and Rose Wine Bar occupied adjoining suites in this building on 30th St. The signage to Secret Sister was minimal with only a label on the window of the front door. The inside was not large by any means with table space for maybe a dozen customers. A short line allowed us to study the menu board and look at the products on display at the service counter. The highlight was the use of a 150+ year old sourdough starter to make the baked goods. Baguettes, country loaves, and brioche buns made up the core breads. A breakfast sandwich, baguette sandwich, Rose burger, and seasonal quiche were some of the other offerings. If you wanted to dine in, a multi-page menu from the Rose Wine Bar was available with plenty of other choices. I wanted to purchase a few baked goods to take home and ended up with the following... * Citrus Olive Oil Coffee Cake * Sourdough Morning Bun - jam, malted vanilla cream * Sourdough Sticky Bun - raspberry, white chocolate, macadamia The coffee cake appeared to be a signature item available daily. It was very moist and smooth for a cake. Each of the two buns was loaded with sweet toppings to contrast the sourness of the dough. The sticky version was gooey as you pulled it apart to eat. They may have been a little pricier, but the quality was top notch. I really liked the flavor combinations. When I scrolled through the social media photos, there were unique profiles that the kitchen had created for the various baked goods. I gave a 4.5 star rating for our Secret Sister takeout experience.

Yelp
I feel like this place is such a not hidden gem. Right in the heart of South parks main area, it was pretty busy on a Saturday morning but we were still able to find seating pretty easily. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and you order at the counter before sitting. They seem to focus on/feature a lot of sourdough options which is great. I got a drip coffee with a blueberry rhubarb bran muffin. My partner got the breakfast sandwich but didn't want any cheese so they were able to swap the bread out for a sourdough brioche bun and no cheese in the sandwich. It had ham, egg, arugula and aioli. We loved everything. The sandwich tasted super high quality. The bun was light and chewy. The muffin was gigantic and even though it was bran, it was so moist with fruit embedded throughout. Not too sweet either. Prices are also super reasonable! Pretty rare nowadays. Muffin was $4.00 and the coffee was $3.50 for a giant mug. Breakfast sandwich was $11. Service was really friendly as well.

Yelp
I had seen that this spot was one of the top bakeries in San Diego and had to come check it out! My friends and I had a lovely experience here. It is a great place to grab a bite or coffee with a friend or for a date (also pet friendly!!). They have an adorable patio area and a welcoming inside seating area. I got a cappuccino which was delicious and the strawberry, thyme, raspberry, poppy seed sourdough scone. It was delicious and I loved how all the flavors came together. A few of my other friends also ordered this and did not regret it. The breakfast sandwich looked delicious, I would like to try it next time. I hope to be back there soon!

Yelp
I don't have much to say cuz their sourdough is perfect, and the staff is so nice! I also tried their sourdough chocolate chip cookies, and that was surprisingly really good.

Yelp
This cute and walkable coffeeshop is a great spot to grab some breakfast or a yummy snack. Their breakfast sandwiches were yummy though not knock your socks off. The coffee was pretty good too! All the staff we encountered were friendly and quick to serve us.

Yelp
First time trying out this place -- the tomato and goat cheese quiche is the best thing I've eaten in San Diego. I will be back here at least once a week from now on. Had a bite of their sourdough donut, which was truly unlike anything I've tasted before. You can tell they put a lot of love and time into the dough. Order at the counter, casual, but cute vibe :) neighborhood gem! Good for a quick bite and a drink.

Yelp
Incredible pastries, relaxing ambiance, easy parking, delicious coffee. What more could you ask for?! I can't wait to try The Rose (the wine bar next door) but for now Secret Sister is my favorite brunch spot in South Park :)
google avatar

Aly Q.

Yelp
Went for Sunday Brunch with a girlfriend and the food did not disappoint! It was a bit crowded and service was a little slow. But once we got our food, the short wait was worth it! The party on the Rose Burger was seasoned to perfection! I couldn't put it down. The carnitas hash was also 10/10. We wanted to try the polenta that's a big hit but they were sold out. Definitely get here early to get the goods! You can also smell the fresh breads from the bakery. Added this place to my brunch list!

Yelp
One of the best vanilla cafe lattes I have ever had in my entire life . Where have you been all my life? I literally paused after taking my first sip in the middle of the street because it was that delicious. Tasted like the burnt sugar on top of a crème brûlée I also got a slice of olive oil cake and tried my best not to wolf it down . It was perfect. Flavorful, moist, I know I hate that word too but idk what other word to describe it. I live in NP and haven't had the chance to check out the newest coffee shops in that area. When I lived in SP I usually would hit Rebecca's Now I have a favorite coffee & bakery shop. Can't wait to go back & buy some bread and try another flavor of coffee. The gentleman that took my order and made the drink was super sweet

Yelp
How am I supposed to go back to LA after eating at secret sister? I'm a bread girl. I don't like cake, cupcakes , chocolate etc. I'm a bread girl. Give me a good loaf of bread and amazing butter and i'm satisfied. Secret Sister delivers! The sourdough bread with a side of organic butter and jam was perfection. You can't go wrong with any of the bfast sandwiches. The salty ham and cheese just melts in your mouth. The sourdough chocante chip cookie was everything you want in a cookie. Great service, great space with doggies everywhere.

Yelp
Such a cute spot!!! I visited on a Sunday morning (around 9:30am) and it was busy but there was ample seating. We ordered the buns, matcha latte, and chai latte. Everything was great! There's intimate indoor seating and outdoor seating for larger parties.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and sandwich. The breakfast sandwich was packed with flavor and the house potatoes were especially flavorful and crispy. The cocoquiles are a must. The Thai green curry is delicious and brings a unique twist to the traditional chilaquiles.
google avatar

Sami L.

Yelp
Delicious spot for coffee and pastries. They offer a lot of breads that are freshly baked. I got some items to go, and they have great flavor. I wish there were more spots like this! :) Right next to the Rose Wine Bar, and the spot is super South Parky and I LOVE IT!
google avatar

Felicia R.

Yelp
Met with a friend and we decided to try lots of dishes lol. So we ordered the quiche - sooo good, the sticky bun that's only available on weekends - delish! And the breakfast sandwich with ham. That one was okay... but not as amazing as the other 2. The coffee was pretty tasty too. We sat outside which was perfect. It's such a fun spot snd everything was freshly baked so it is definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
Lots of reviews already. I've been lazy about reviews lately so after about 20+ visits, I decided to write one. I really like their baked goods, Bread and Cie will always be my favorite bakery as they have a lot of vegan choices but I do love the bread I have purchased here at times. My gym is right next door so if I want to pop in after a workout on a Saturday or Sunday to grab a good cup of coffee I do. Their drip coffee is always fresh and I appreciate the fact that they have oat milk creamer. I like the atmosphere after the crowds leave which is around 1:00 pm, sitting on their comfy couch reading a book and sipping a coffee after a hard workout is my favorite thing. The service here is very good and friendly, I've never had a bad experience here and will continue to come back after the gym. They have beautiful desserts and baked scones from what I've seen too, my husband loves their scones and cookies.
google avatar

Yelp
At least 3.5 of these stars are for the sourdough bread itself. I felt bad not giving an extra star but I feel the bread was doing so much of the heavy lifting here. It is made with a super old starter and tastes just like it - spongy bouncy bread inside a firm crunchy crust that is just to die for. I love me my sourdough and was glad to have happened upon this place. The down side :( almost all the other stuff I have tried. I tried a lemon pistachio cake which in idea sounded good, but was lacking in something? Flavor? Fat maybe? I was disappointed. I also ordered a berry ricotta pastry which was okay, but definitely felt I could get better at the donut shop. Really bummed out, but at least the bread made it worth the trip. The workers are friendly and helpful, they do offer some GF items, but there is cross-contamination so not celiac-friendly, and they have some nut items so not totally allergy-friendly. I don't dock points because they don't market themselves as such but just noting as I have friends who are celiac and have allergies and I'm always looking out for new things for them, which are hard to find. I digress. The inside is pretty small and always packed, and there is indoor and outdoor seating. I usually take my stuff to go so I don't have to wait for a seat. Parking is parking, and usually a good 2-5 minute walk to find anything.

Yelp
What awful customer service! I went in to try this place. As a fellow smallest owner in South Park, who refers many clients to other businesses in the neighborhood I was excited to try some thing new to me in the neighborhood. I walked in and began looking at the menu, and was greeted by an employee who asked me if I knew what I wanted. I told her no I wasn't ready yet and she seemed exasperated that I hadn't made up my mind. Hello! Never been here before! After some perusing of the menu, I saw some hibiscus shortbread cookies that looked amazing. However, they were a packaged with chocolate cookies and I simply asked if I would be able to just buy hibiscus shortbread cookies on their own. The gal behind the counter was so abrupt! I Explained that I can't have chocolate, but the hibiscus shortbread cookies sounded amazing and she firmly indicated to me that it was impossible for me to purchase them separately. OK... So I opted for a baguette and there were two left on the shelf. One was a beautiful light golden brown and the other one had spent a little bit too long in the oven. She bagged up the burned baguette then handed it to me. So I will not be returning, or referring any clients in the direction of this business. Wow.

Spencer M.

Yelp
The breakfast sandwich was really good, best I've had in SD. Good area to, love South Park

Magdolen K.

Yelp
Just get a slice of the citrus olive oil cake and a baguette sandwich (if you make it in time). You will not regret these choices I promise.
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
Lovely like wine and coffee place. Not your traditional coffee. No lattes or foamed milk. But French press, teas by the pot, and lovely service. They took great care of my large group of 8 with amazing service. Lots of seating both indoors and out. Super cute neighborhood. Will be back.

Juliana C.

Yelp
The best sourdough bread since I lived in San Francisco. Get there early as they are often sold out.

Nikko S.

Yelp
I came here on a beautiful Saturday morning for the first time. But the lady who took our coffee order was rude and lacking customer service. She ruined the entire experience. She probably needs more coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely another hidden gem in San Diego, specifically the South Park area. This wonderful bakery bakes right adjacent to The Rose Wine Bar, so if you know where they are, you are set. They are only opened Wednesdays through Sundays 8 am to 3 pm. I stopped in for a coffee and a scone. They had a Strawberry Shisho Sourdough Scone which I just had to try, and I had it with an iced coffee. The scone was outstanding and the strawberry flavor came out nicely with a subtle flavor of the sourdough. I liked the texture to. It was not as dense as I am accustomed too, but it was good, and one could tell it was a scone. I light that it had a light crisp exterior texture. I would certainly have it again, but next time I need to try the Green Garlic Cheddar Biscuit. Service was quite friendly and also informative regarding their product and such. They offer comfortable inside and outside seating.

Yelp
Amazingly delicious GF chocolate walnut brownie! Cute location. Salads looked really good - need to try next time.
google avatar

Curt T.

Yelp
The cold brew was good and strong. Got the cream on the side. The drip coffee was plain and ordinary The gougere was delicious. Flaky and crunchy and good onion and cheese flavor. The breakfast sandwich was very good also. I liked how the yolk was a little runny and delicious. The bread it was served on was delicious. I think it might have been the gougere made into the bread for the sandwich. Totally delicious. Service was good as well.

Yelp
Really cute spot right next to their sister restaurant. More takeaway style but you can still sit in and enjoy some baked goodies. Service was great and they were busy with the morning Saturday rush. You order and pay at the counter. If you ordered any hot food, you get a number and they'll bring it out to you. The restaurant next door was packed which made outdoor seating a little confusing. Wasn't sure which seats were for which establishment. They had a cake, savory quiche, two options for baguette sandwiches, and a few other things. Their coffee selection is small. Highly recommend viewing their Oven Hours to ensure that what you're craving is available when you arrive. Bring your pup too! There were a few dogs chilling inside while their owners worked or enjoyed a snack. We got the breakfast sandwich, iced coffee, and ham & butter baguette sandwich. The breakfast sandwich was ok. The biscuit was kind of like a really dense croissant. Couldn't taste any of the chive/garlic. The ham and butter baguette sandwich was great. The baguette!!!!! Wish I had bought a whole baguette. Don't doubt the simplicity of this sandwich. Would come back for this again.
google avatar

Danielle N.

Yelp
The breakfast sandwich is amazing. They only have it certain days and times but worth getting it. The lunch sandwich is alright. Good vibes and super nice patio to sit and eat and drink coffee.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious baked goods. Such a cute spot in one of my favorite SD areas. So happy Secret Sister is here to stay!
google avatar

Bruski N.

Yelp
We just stopped by for a quick bite of their desserts. The Citrus olive oil coffee cake was decent, light, and moist. My party said the scone was good and not as dry as most scones. The Vanilla Chiffon w/Meyer Lemon Curd was just average and tasted old. The inside is more spacious with two dining areas. It's an order-at-the-counter model which fits the vibe of the place. We'll try their lunch menu next time.

Yelp
I am not sure why I have not been here sooner as this is a local bake shop and tea house (two of my favorite things in one!). Got here as they opened, but almost missed it as the exterior of the building does not have a sign that says Secret Sister hence the name LOL. One of my concerns was if I was going to be able to find dairy free desserts as I am lactose intolerant. Not many options for the sweet bread as the only dairy free option was the coconut macaroon. As for the loaves of bread no dairy issues there. I ordered a turmeric latte and the breakfast sandwich with ham. The girls at the front taking orders were helpful in double checking to see if the had vegan cheese for the sandwich. They did! They were able to switch out the bread for sourdough and add vegan cheese. The sandwich was pretty good and ironically tasted better than the original version (my friend ordered the original version and wasn't a fan). I was pleasantly surprised that the turmeric came in a mini glass pot for you to prepare your own turmeric latte. The size of the mini glass pot was probably two mugs worth at other places. The turmeric was no sweetened so I asked for honey to help with the taste. But I appreciate that it is not sweetened as I am not a fan of overly sweet drinks. Me adding the honey allowed me to make it to my liking. If coming for breakfast highly recommend coming early as it starts to get busy around 9.30 am. Loved my choices and appreciate the staff for answering my questions and making the adjustments for a dairy free breakfast sandwich.

Yelp
Wow! Was super excited to finally stop by! Came around 9 am on a Saturday and it was already a little busy - people are early birds! I got the Earl Grey morning bun and the drip coffee. I think I'd enjoy the pastry heated up and will do so next time. I felt the lemon and the flavor was unique but it didn't taste super Earl grey to me. I still enjoyed it though! There were so many pastries I wanted - I have my eyes on the sticky bun. I will be back as people there were so friendly and it looks like a great community. I saw people by lots of bread so I think that's also on my list.

Yelp
Wow. How did it take me so long to visit Secret Sister?! I have been going out of my way to one of my favorite San Diego bakeries, Wayfarer Bakery in Bird Rock, for a delicious fresh baguette when I had an amazing option in my own backyard at Secret Sister. I am already looking forward to coming back. Secret Sister has all things sourdough. I had no idea so many things could be made with sourdough. My favorite item was the classic sourdough baguette. I came a little after 9am as highlighted in the oven schedule and my baguette was still warm. What I look for in a good sourdough baguette is a crispy exterior with a nice bite, soft inside, a balanced sour taste (not too much and not too little where you can't tell it's sourdough), and overall freshness. The sourdough baguette at Secret Sister has all of this!! I enjoyed my baguette on its own, with charcuterie items, and in a mini sandwich. All amazing. Scones can be a hit or miss for me. The Secret Sister scones were a hit! Crispy exterior. Tender, buttery, flaky, but not dry inside. Mild sourdough taste. Lightly sweetened with dried seasonal fruits folded in. A light sprinkle of sugar crystal. The scone was huge and so good with a cup of tea. Finally, I tried the salted caramel and sourdough chocolate chip cookie. Both were amazing and if you're in the mood, go for it, but just know you will not be getting the Secret Sister sourdough as much with these items

Yelp
Okay... so I'm hesitant on writing this review but every time I leave this place I'm sad by how they make me feel. The food is amazing but the lady behind the counter is always so rude. For instance, I asked about the sandwich available, like what's in it? Response: "ham." "Oh, just ham?" "Arugula and an egg" "Sounds good, I'll take one" -blank stare- I proceed to finish my order and pay. I leave with my freaking delicious food with a sour taste already in my mouth.

Yelp
I had been here a few times before, but my latest experience was extremely disappointing. The menus they had out were for the Rose/Secret Sister, but when we tried to order certain dishes we were told that they weren't able to do them and that we'd need to go next door to the Rose to order. Overall just really unclear and the tall fellow behind the counter was pretty rude , dismissive, and unhelpful in explaining. They shouldn't have menus out if they're not serving those items. Pretty simple fix, in my opinion. One person in our group got their coffee immediately, two others waited 20 min for their drinks. Some food came out after a wait, but the rest and another drink were completely forgotten about. The cold seasonal quiche ($13?!) was super salty, to the point of being inedible after a few bites. The breakfast sandwich was good, but pretty overpriced. We had to go up to the counter three different times to check in on forgotten drinks/food. After about an hour of waiting we gave up and asked for a refund on the last 'wich, as everyone else had finished their meal already. Pretty disappointed overall. The girl taking our order was kind and apologetic, so props to her, but they've gotta work on their staffing, customer service, and efficiency!

Yelp
Fun spot in South Park, the cashier was friendly and patient with us since it was our first time. The matcha was amazing (sweetened) I found the chai good, I've had better... but learned later that they specialize in French press and tea so stick with that if there's something that piques your interest. The turkey sandwich with apple butter was a great start to the morning. All the staff was awesome and they are sisters with the wine spot next door. Plenty of outdoor seating and dog friendly! I can't wait to come back and try the wine!

Yelp
Something about this place, it's magical. The ambiance, food, coffee, glassware, mural, lights. Loved every bit of detail. We got the blueberry bran muffin, chocolate chip cookie, and breakfast sandwich- all amazing. We honestly had to refrain ourselves from ordering everything on the menu. Then the cold brew and coffee were so smooth and not bitter at all. Easily the best cold brew I've ever had. I've had Secret Sister on my list for a long time and I'm kicking myself for not going sooner. Already can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
The staff was friendly to me! Even accommodated my mom's request to pick a specific loaf, all smiles! We got two loaves, three breakfast Sammie's add ham, two bagels for later, two coffees, $5.00 tip, $88.00. Breakfast sammy on funky biscuity-like roll, eggcellent runny egg and overall it was perfect, assuming you love the roll. Small indoor with AC, lots of outdoor patio, ultra dog friendly. 8:30 am was five deep line, only one small table available inside. By 9:15 it was picking up, the line was to the door inside. Sourdough country loaf is big, but unfortunately not anymore sour than most others here in town. Chewy inside with a great crumb, but I was hoping that 152 year old SF starter would be the difference I've been searching for. I bake and I'm constantly tweaking the style and recipe and ratios and moisture levels and cold fermentation times to try and make my sourdough more sour, all while searching Artisian bakers for the same thing. Still searching....

Yelp
This is my favorite bakery in San Diego. We go here early to grab the whole wheat seeded sourdough before it sells out (and it will)! Make sure to check online for their oven schedule. I usually pick up the bread and order a few pastries, and sit in their outdoor seating area for a chill time. Try the olive oil citrus cake!
