Selam International Mart & Cafe - Review - North Lamar - Austin - The Infatuation

"Selam is a small Ethiopian grocery store and butcher shop in North Austin with a restaurant attached to it. There’s a big selection of vegetarian options that we like a lot—including the Ultimate Veggie Combo that’s basically a giant sampler platter—but the biggest strength here is beef, since it comes from the butcher side of the operation. Order some tender beef tibs and kitfo (tartare), and maybe throw in a few vegetables for balance." - Nicolai McCrary

5/5 – A must-try hidden gem! This was my third time at Saleem, and each time feels like discovering it all over again. The sizzling anjera, the perfectly spiced veggies, the rich and flavorful dips—it’s a full sensory experience. The smell of the food hits you before you even sit down, and the traditional Ethiopian coffee seals the whole moment. The owner cooks everything himself with so much care and passion, and you can taste it in every bite. He’s just now expanding the restaurant, and it deserves all the love. Warm, welcoming, and unforgettable. Don’t sleep on this place—it’s worth it!

Google
A real gem! Authentic, delicious and fresh food. Limited menu but the two dishes I had were amazing! Coming from NYC I have been looking for authentic ethnic food spots and this place reminded me of the favorite Ethiopian spots I used to go to. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Also a great place to pick up spices and other Ethiopian speciality groceries.

The amazing man working the day I came in recently was so nice and HE WAS SLAYING. He was cutting the meat in the back, he was running the register, and he was checking on us between all of this. My friend and I came in to find ingredients we had just googled the day before to make a special dinner for their birthday. It was obvious we had no clue what we were looking for, but he was so patient and seemed excited to help us. I accidentally dropped a bag of kolo right before checking out, and I was told to leave it for him to clean up and to get a fresh bag of it. Very respectable store. They have everything you need to make most easy dishes. So much fresh injera (bread) and berbere (spice) which are staples, and now I will never run out! But when I eventually do (because this food was SO amazing), I’m coming back here.

This was one of the best meals I’ve had in recent memory. Large portions, absolutely so delicious at an affordable price. Got the vegetarian sampler and oh my goodness - so good.

The most delicious food I have ever tasted. Everyone there is so kind and helpful and I plan on picking up their fresh baked Injera on a weekly basis.

Yelp
Fantastic Ethiopian food and friendly service. The owner and the staff are amazing people and of course the food is as authentic as it comes.

Yelp
We've only had one experience, but it was a positive one. We wanted to make Ethiopian style food at home and found all the relevant ingredients here. The person was a bit unhappy - understandably - that we couldn't pronounce things correctly but patient and helpful in trying to understand what we were looking for and then pointing us to it. The items were a bit pricey compared to other ethnic grocery stores though they did say they were authentic and arrived straight from the motherland.

Yelp
Selam is a gem. A hole in the wall tucked into a strip mall, with friendly inviting people and delicious Ethiopian products at a fair price. I found the besobela and kosseret I was seeking for my niter kibbeh and could not resist an enormous package of barley flour and teff injera that cost all of $8. (Sadly, it broke in my suitcase on the trip home to NY but was still delicious.) They also serve hot food but I was with a group of non-adventurous eaters so will have to return.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in north Austin Fantastic, authentic Ethiopian food. The cafe is part of the store with just a few tables. There isn't a huge menu, there are a few choices each day and customers eat what is cooked that day. What that means is, everything is super fresh. The staff are super friendly and will explain the food to you (if you aren't familiar) and help make sure the slice level is suitable. The coffee was out of this world too. I will come back here again!

Yelp
Authentic Ethiopian food. Injera and all the great stews. Not too spicy for this gringa. Owners are very nice and explain the food options.
