The Best Dishes Eater Detroit Editors Ate in August, 2024 | Eater Detroit

"A newly opened Korean spot where everything—kimchi included—is made in-house; the highlight is the jajangmyeon, the Korean-Chinese noodle classic with a thick chunjang sauce studded with diced pork and vegetables. The Korean rendition leans darker and sweeter than its Chinese ancestor, and ordering the hearty, shareable preparation with rice instead of noodles transforms it into a comforting, deeply satisfying meal." - Eater Staff

Absolutely wonderful. From the moment I walked in until my eventual departure, the experience was top-notch. Service is impressive. Waitstaff was quick, professional, happy to answer all my questions and polite throughout. I ordered the Jjamppong, a spicy seafood noodle dish. 😋 Quantity is quite filling, quality is excellent, flavor is impeccable. While looking around, I noticed the majority of the patrons were of East Asian descent. And several tables nearby were speaking Korean amongst themselves. Seems high marks for authenticity are deserved here. The decor lands an upscale air. The music is soft, in the background, and in English. Ok. My only complaints: the padding on the chairs is skimpy and they aren't closer to my home.

The jjampong here is so delicious- it has a really nice smoky flavor and depth to it, we also got the youringi chicken. The portions are sizable, my husband and I usually share noodles and another dish with a little leftover! Service is also friendly, the owner noticed I was wearing a white shirt and he gave me an apron so I wouldn’t spill soup on myself 🙏🏼 We love coming here for a quick and delicious meal!

Google
Great way to spend our anniversary, with piping hot seafood tofu pot and hambak steak on rice! The fish that came with my tofu pot meal were fried and seasoned to perfection and we could probably eat ten more! Service was friendly and we will be back again!

I love jjambbong, and I recently had an amazing bowl after moving to Michigan. The rich broth, fresh vegetables and seafood, and just the right touch of savory oil made it incredibly satisfying. I’m so glad to have found a place that serves delicious jjambbong here in Michigan. Now I’m excited to try their other dishes too!

Wow 🤯 the food here is out of this world. We just moved into the area Aug, and this has easily become my favorite restaurant here. I’ve had food in the Seoul airport and other authentic Korean food in the past - Food here at Seoul Myeon is top notch for Korean food. My husband grew up in Arkansas and he also loves food here. We have had five dishes so far and love every one of them. Aside from the shrimp dishes (I have shrimp allergy), I’m excited to try all the other dishes. You can’t really go wrong with ordering - everything on the menu is stellar and flavorful - so pick according to your preferences. I’ve had to ask for modifications due to allergies and the customer service here is incredible. We will be taking our coworkers, clients, and friends/family here soon. Thanks for sharing your amazing food and talent with us!

Google
No words. This place is to the point. Its delicious korean food beloved by everyone who recommended it to me. The tonkatsu is impeccable and the kimchi was the right level of spice. All of the dishes we tried were lovely but that yourungiri is so lovely. It could be an entree on its own. The service was awesome and the price was pretty good too. Will return and highly recommend.

Google
Some of the most authentic Korean food I’ve had in Michigan so far. The crispiness of the yuringi was perfect, and we loved the tanginess of the sauce. The tonkatsu was HUGE and tasted just liked in Korea. I also ordered jjampong that I sadly forgot to take a picture of. The squid had a nice bite to it and shrimp were sweet and not overcooked. The taste of the jjampong had the proper “bul” smokiness. Most of all, the owner was super kind and gave us some kimchi to try. Can’t wait to be back! 🌟

Google
The Jjampong is truly one of the best foods I have ever had in my entire life. The staff is friendly and helpful. Food comes quick and prices are reasonable. 11/10

Yelp
Hospitality was top notch. We were in the area and found this little gem. We were seating immediately the server was super sweet and took the time to explain all the dish to us. Although the menu is very limited everyone can still find something they like. We had the beef bulgogi, mandu and jjanjanmeyon (sorry for the misspelling ) and kimchi and radish. Food was soooo good. I can't wait to go back and try other things. It's a very casual little place to sit down with friend and family. Ps try the strawberry milk they offer and thank me later

Yelp
Their jjajangmyun and rose jjamppong were a bit greasy but pretty tasty. Tasted similar to what you'd get in Korea. Good portion size and great service as well.

Yelp
Great food! Service was amazing. Was driving bye and decided to stop somewhere new and I wasn't let down at all.

Yelp
It was a pretty clean restaurant. The waiter was kind and helpful. The food could have been better. The fried pork was good but the Jajangmyeon was okay. It tasted lukewarm.

Yelp
Stopped in to check the place out. Thankfully found a parking spot, but I can see this being a major issue. It's your standard full service sit-down restaurant. It wasn't busy when I walked in and I got to sit anywhere I wanted. I had been studying their menu for a while, so I went with the following: - Jjampong - Youringi Jjampong was disappointing. The noodles were overcooked and mushy. For spicy seafood noodles, only saw few shrimps and squids, five mussels, of which one was dead (wasn't open). The broth was ok, didn't get that "refreshing" taste from the broth. Definitely not on my list to try it again. This dish was 1 out of 5 for me. Youringi - for $25, you can order it once and try it, but can't justify ordering this often. This dish is to share, for around 2 to 3 people. If you come in with a large crowd, definitely worth ordering to share. The soy based sauce wasn't too sweet or sour and the chili's weren't spicy. It went very well with the chicken and the lettuce it came with. They do not serve banchans with your order, the only two items I got was salad (those you get at a sushi joint) and yellow radish. Overall, walked away disappointed with their noodle dish. With "noodles" in their name, I would have hoped it would have blown me away, but it did not.

Yelp
Tried Seoul Myeon for the first time tonight... was surprised how limited their menu was. I ordered the jjamppong and my husband ordered the soba noodles. I liked my dish, it was spicy... too many onions and carrots though. On the other hand, my husband was still hungry and did not have any protein in his soba - he was just given a side of wasabi. With the prices, we thought they should have also included some side dishes. They also handed us our check when we were only halfway done eating. This restaurant has so much potential but I don't know if we will be back any time soon.
google avatar

Rob X.

Yelp
A Korean colleague recommended this place stating that their Jjamppong is really good. He wasn't kidding. It was full of flavor and noodles were cooked well. I'd like to comeback and try some other things on the menu.

Yelp
My friend was looking for a late lunch, and she decided on Seoul Myeon. SInce it was almost 2:30 PM, the restaurant was practically empty, so we were seated immediately. We decided to share an entree since I wasn't too hungry. Both of us were served complementary house salads to start. The iceberg lettuce was fresh, but the dressing was on the greasy side. JJAMPPONG - 15.95 I don't eat jjamppong too often, but the broth here was flavorful with a nice depth. It wasn't incredibly spicy, though, so if you prefer your jjamppong extra spicy, be sure to let your server know when placing an order. The noodles held their texture well without being soggy. There was a decent amount of seafood and onions, as well. The only downside was how oily the broth was, but other than that, the jjamppong was pretty good. For Troy standards, Seoul Myeon is a solid option for Korean-Chinese dishes. The interior is clean with around 10 tables for dine-in.

Yelp
Went here a few weeks ago to check out this new Korean restaurant in the area. They don't have the full menu up right now but the options they did have were pretty good. In the soft opening menu we got the Fried rice, spicy seafood Jjampong, and dumplings. My Jjampong was pretty good and lots of flavor first time trying it so not sure if it's all like this but they definitely overloaded it with onions which was overwhelming I had to take slices of onions out, it was like 2 onions worth per bowl . But overall flavor was really good.

Yelp
Tried carryout for our family one night and Seoul Myeon became our new favorite! We were all very happy with all the food we ordered. They have all our Korean favorites, but Japanese options as well. You can dine in or carryout. We ordered Katsu curry, bulgogi, black bean noodles and more! Everything was delicious!

Yelp
Was nice to see Seoul Myun replaced the old Korean restaurant. Stopped in for an early dinner on a Thursday, walked right in, was pretty quiet so we were able to get a quick table. Very clean inside and service was just fine. The food was great! Loved everything we ordered. The jjajangmyun had great flavor. Loved the jjambbong, had great flavor, not too spicy, and lots of seafood! The tangsuyook was perfectly crispy and the sauce was good too! Definitely will go back!

Yelp
Got the beef with rice on their soft opening menu. Beef was tender. Sauce flavorful. Yolk was raw which was ok. Dish came out fast which makes me think it wasn't made on the spot. This was not one of the dishes that was recommended however we gave it a try and it didn't disappoint. Service: there were several servers and only two tables. Servers were chatting audibly amongst each other. Given the staff ratio Service was not amazing. Did not come check on us after food arrived but did come to give us the check at the end in a hurried fashion. Environment: overall, clean. However I could hear someone chopping meat in the kitchen for the duration of our dining experience. Loud. Very unpleasant.

Yelp
The food here is super authentic and tasty. The portion sizes are very good for the price. I had the tonkatsu which was only $17 and was double the size of my hand. The bulgogi was also amazing. Ambiance is very laid back and chill. Service was very fast.

Yelp
Seoul Myun is a new restaurant in the area with a soft opening menu available currently. There was a decent amount of seating inside with a sleek, clean interior design. If you look at the pictures available for this restaurant, you'll notice that a majority of it is Jjamppong. That is for a reason! Upon our arrival, we were strongly recommend either their jjamppong or jjajangmyeon as their most popular dishes. I was not disappointed, possibly the best in the area. Very flavorful and they were very generous with the vegetables and seafood. Service was wonderful and accommodating. I do plan to visit again to try other menu items as I am sure they are just as good.

Yelp
An excellent place for comforting Korean cuisine! I came with a few friends on a Sunday evening, and we were seated immediately, as the restaurant is quite spacious and not too crowded. This was actually my second time here--the first time I tried the soondubu (spicy tofu stew), and it was absolutely delicious. My friends ordered the jjamppong, and I knew I had to come back to try it, so I ordered it this time around. The broth was cooked wonderfully and had a great depth of flavor. I also appreciated how large the portion size was! The service was wonderful, with the worker checking on us frequently and even making accommodations to allow us to fit 5 people at a table! Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
Tried their fried pork with curry and beef bibimbap. Both dishes are delicious. My toddler loved the fried pork. Pork is well fried. Not too greasy or salty. Bibimbap also excellent. Ingredients tasted fresh and well flavored. Served on a hot plate. Service and ambiance very good. Would return again to try their full for sure

Christopher S.

Yelp
Most authentic Korean food in town. Amazing hospitality and service. Nice vibe. Very hard working team, and it shows in the food.

Yelp
Delicious i love the rotating menu. Got the pork katsu (HUGE) and the sweet and sour pork. Would definitely go here again. Food came out fast and everything was great quality and authentic

Yelp
This place is newer. It is near tous les jours and a bubble tea place. It is a mini Asian plaza. I didn't have to wait long to get a table and they are known for their noodles. I got the jampong. Honestly the food was really good and authentic. The servers can speak Korean and English! Overall I enjoyed the the experience and will come back with my family!

Yelp
Finally a good place to grab a bowl of jjajangmyeon near me! Super tasty. Love it with the tangsuyuk. The tteokbokki was soupy and delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Newly opened korean noodle restaurant! The youringi was soo delicious and flavorful! I want to try the tansuyuk next time! The jjampong also had so much seafood and had that firey taste to it! Highly recommend if you are looking for korean-chinese noodles! The service was quick and restaurant was very clean!

Yelp
I've never been to a Korean restaurant that doesn't serve bon chon. I could let that pass. I ordered Beef Bibimbap. The rice is supposed to be crispy on the bottom. On their version the rice was burnt beyond eatable standards. The whole dish just tasted like char. Besides that the beef wasn't good either. During our whole dining experience there was a loud pounding coming from the back that was louder than the music. Constant pounding! I do not recommend. Sorry I do t

Yelp
As someone who moved recently from California, I have been craving authentic home style Korean Food. This place nailed it on the mark! It was great portions enough to take home for lunch the next day. The flavor was amazing. The Jjambbong was just the right spice and perfect on a cold day. Tonkatsu was huge and crispy and definitely filling. The staff were friendly and constantly checked in to make sure you had everything you needed. I highly recommend this place!

Joseph J.

Yelp
The food and service is always top notch!! I've never had a problem here. It's always rather empty which sucks because it's a great restaurant!! They always have great kim chee! And the pork cutlet is incredible!
google avatar

Donna M.

Yelp
The food was much better under previous ownership. Ordered Bulgogi.. unchewable beef...80% discarded. Lined like Lots of beef but dark mushrooms made it look like lots of beef. Sorry. But there are much better Korean restaurants in Troy. Final visit.

Yelp
Very good food. Tasty! Fast service. Servers are very attentive. Price is right. Definitely will come here again and again.

Yelp
Was super excited for this place! Unfortunately, they only had the soft opening menu. But let me tell you- everything we had was incredible. Staff and service were excellent!!! Can't wait to be back to try to full menu.

Yelp
The Rosè Spicy Seafood Jjamppong was incredible. Completely balanced and fresh. Service was top notch. Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Stopped for lunch. Very friendly staff and excellent service. Restaurant is clean and modern. Authentic Korean food. Only complaint is the small menu with limited choice; however, the manager explained that would be changing in the next few weeks.
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant is my favorite on earth. The hospitality is amazing and welcoming. The food is other worldly and every dish. I've had every dish on the menu and everything is perfection. My wife is Korean and says this has the best Jajangmyeon she's ever had. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone.
google avatar

Yelp
Disappointed with no bonchon, limited menu, small portions. There are better Korean restaurants in the area.

Jacob Z.

Yelp
All I can say is WOW!! The food is soooo good!! The waitress was very friendly!! Good food, good service and very clean!!

Yelp
Hayashi Rice was good. Decent portion. Friendly staff................................

Yelp
Service was great. The soup was spicy but very good. Just one not so great thing was the squid was too chewy. The shrimp was tender and the muscles were also cooked fine.

Yelp
We loved this place! We ordered the jjamppong, a spicy seafood soup with spaghetti-like noodles. Seoul Myeon's customers that night were all Asian, which I thought was a good sign that the food would be first rate. As two Caucasian retirees, we sometimes are not taken seriously when we ask for spicy food, and we appreciated that this did not happen. The staff were extremely courteous, and service was superb. The decor was very attractive as well. We are new to Michigan and really enjoyed our experience. Try this place--it's great!

KL ..

Yelp
Ordered the jjamppong, donkatsu, and tangsuyuk. Jjamppong was a 10/10 outstanding! Super flavorful, so much seafood and veggies, noodles were cooked perfectly, and the broth was deliciously aromatic. Donkatsu was a 10/10 also! The portion was huge. I'm telling you, it would take more than two people to finish it. Fried perfectly and the katsu sauce was really yummy. Tangsuyuk 4/10 Although it was fried perfectly, the sauce tasted kind of weird. It was bland, citrusy, and the sauce consistency was more watery than I would have wanted. It wasn't that sweet either, when it's supposed to be! Customer service was great, but for me, the jjamppong was incredible. Def going back!

Aoi Z.

Yelp
Food is authentic and delicious, I've been struggling to find good jajangmyeon in the area so I'm pretty excited about finding this place. Great atmosphere, and service is quick even tho it's busy! To get the attention of your server just raise your hand. All the food was a 10/10.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Best jjajanmyun ever! It tastes just like Korea. The portions are small, so we asked for rice and mixed it in, when we were done with the noodles

Patrick S.

Yelp
Incredibly happy I stopped in for dinner. The service was A+ and the food was just as great. I wish that I live closer so I would be able to make this a regular stop in.

Sofia B.

Yelp
I love love loveeeeee the food, it taste amazing and the waiter was nice. They severed us well and I'm definitely coming back.

Mark M.

Yelp
Sooo happy!!! New, clean, cute space and the food is really great. Wife and kids all loved their meals. They had a small menu for the "soft opening". I had the excellent beef stew and rice. Menu needs more descriptions (mine and the pork black bean noodles came with a fried egg, which was a surprise bonus). Large (and sometimes extra large portions). Pork cutlet was as big as my head. Bravo! Can't wait for the full menu. And they have Ramune !!!! (IYKYK)
