"Pointe-Saint-Charles Lao eatery Sep Lai has come up with a new takeout menu, including Lao rice salad Nem Khao Tod; a choice of laap including vegan, chicken with liver, and fish; som pak (fermented cabbage with garlic); and Lao-style papaya salad, Tam Mak Houng. There’s an emphasis on freshness, and vegans and gluten-free diners can find satisfying choices here through the carefully annotated menu." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Laotian Lunch and Dinner Spot Sep Lai Opens in Pointe-Saint-Charles | Eater Montreal

"I'm looking forward to a new Laotian day-to-night restaurant opening Thursday, June 24 on Centre Street at the corner of Charlevoix (2601 Centre Street). Run by chef-owner Natassia Marier, who has transformed the former Machiavelli space, Sep Lai will dish up spring rolls and egg rolls—from fresh to fried and even mozzarella-filled—salads including a minty yum salat made with a traditional egg yolk dressing, and soups such as a spicy red curry khao poon with somen noodles and slaw and a chicken-broth wintermelon option. Open for lunch and dinner (initially Thursday to Sunday, 5–10 p.m., with lunches beginning next week), the menu branches out at night to include white fish steamed in a banana leaf, Laotian pork sausage meatballs, and maeh thuu jeow, an eggplant-and-ginger dip. The BYOB model remains, the renovated space will be more open and airy so Marier can engage with patrons from the kitchen, and new bar seating is planned for solo lunches of fragrant soups, herbaceous salads, and crisp deep-fried spring rolls. The name Sep Lai means “That was delicious!” in Lao, and Marier’s mother—who once ran a restaurant specializing in stuffed cylindrical snacks and now helps with recipe development via FaceTime—has been closely involved." - Valerie Silva

They have a very cute yard. We didn't sit in the yard because it was supposed to rain but we checked it out after. It was really cute. The food was good. I liked the soup with meat and noodle better (the non creamy one). The beef skewer was good too. Not a big fan of the steam sticky rice tho. Overall we had a good time there!

Cozy little spot with décor that perfectly fits its intimate vibe. The menu is simple but appealing, we tried the chicken brochette, pork boulette, papaya salad, rice salad, and fried chicken skin. Everything was tasty, but unfortunately almost all dishes were a bit too salty. It’s a charming place, especially for a date night or a quiet evening with someone special. Probably less ideal for bigger groups due to the space. Overall, a good experience and worth a visit if you’re looking for a cozy night out.

I was really excited to try Sep Lai for my first taste of Laotian food—and while the food itself was delicious, the overall experience left a lot to be desired. We waited over an hour to place our order, even after telling the waitress multiple times that we were ready. When the food finally started arriving, it came in waves—so people at our table were eating at totally different times. Some were still waiting while others had already finished, which made things pretty awkward. I had the dried meat with a super tasty sauce, the chicken spring roll, and the soup. All of it was genuinely delicious, and I was very happily surprised. The biggest downside: we were seated on the back terrace, right next to a pile of garbage that smelled strongly of dead fish and cat litter. It was disgusting. We had to step away several times because the stench was unbearable. That really ruined the vibe. Food was great—but bad service and a gross setting made it hard to enjoy.

Google
this place offers the Laotian food. We ordered papaya salad, nem khao, kua mee, fried chicken skin. I love fried chicken skin, crispy and a bit salty. Very hard to find here. I wish the papaya salad would be more sep, its still not hit. Kua mee and Nem khao is good tho. When we went there, it was only one serveuse so the service was really slow. But the serveuse is really friendly and attentive.

I’ve been here so many times as it’s such a fun place to bring visiting family and friends. We always get the tasting menu, as it’s a good diversity and amount of food, and is such an easy decision! They’re accommodating to dietary restrictions (gluten free, vegetarian, vegan), which also makes it a great choice for groups. The seating areas are divided into smaller rooms, so it’s never too loud. The terrace is really beautiful in the summer. Everything is delicious. I love the soup and pandan crème brûlée in particular. Everything feels fresh, so you don’t feel overstuffed afterwards. There’s a local wine shop across the street where we get our drinks, since it’s BYOW. But I always get the homemade ginger ale too! The service is attentive, quick, and kind.

Google
Delicious food and reasonable!! Definitely, we’ll go back again🩷 Update: The first time I absolutely loved everything I ate and gave 5 stars but recently I went back expecting the same experience I had i. the last visit. However this time everything we ordered was quite salty. Not sure if they changed the menu or we ordered different plates but I was a bit disappointed🥹 My friends seemed to be enjoying their meals.

Google
Great atmosphere with very welcoming (and patient) staff who make for a great experience if you're interested in trying food from Laos. You'll find some similarities between the ingredients used in the dishes if you're familiar with Vietnamese cuisine. The 'freshness' of the ingredients is a major factor in them tasting the way they do. Overall, I'd recommend this to a group of people who don't mind ordering dishes to share. Note that the portion sizes maybe big on paper, but the quantity of food will likely make you order more. Make sure you order enough but also keep an eye on the prices, as they sure add up. PS Highly advise you to save some space for dessert!

Yelp
It's a shame that sep lai does not have more reviews! It was my first time having laotian food, many of the dishes and flavours were reminiscent of Thai cuisine. It's a fun spot to order many different plates and share. We had the kua mee (pad thai), khao poon (soup noodle), calamari and mango salad. The pad thai was so fresh, garnished with bean sprouts, veggies and peanuts! The fried egg was a nice touch and the flavours were balanced. The khao poon was a bit mild on the flavour. But the curry flavours were tasty. The shrimps were quite small, I've never seen anything like it! The calamari was excellent, one of the faves of the night. The fried basil and tomato/pineapple mixture paired so well. Finally the mango salad was refreshing, crunchy, sweet and sour. Great way to start the meal! The ambeience was lovely, please ask to sit on the terasse. You're surrounded by plants and string lights.. an unbelievably cozy experience.

Yelp
THE hidden gem in town. For its fine unique cuisine to its incredibly cozy back patio, this place is a must try in PSC. The tasting menu is worth indulging for, as you'll get to experience the true Laotian meal. The team is welcoming, very friendly, alert to make each guest's experience great. Dont forget to try the crème brûlée which is the signature dessert, and definitely a pleasant surprise!

Yelp
This resto is adorable and has such a chill and cozy vibe. Laos food is delicious and I've never had it before. Very similar to Thai, but it has its little differences in spices and preparation. I reserved for two and we got a nice place at their bar, which is looking out at the window. It's not a great view, but you go for the food and company. It was my birthday, so we each got the Soup Khao Poon as an entrée which is a good move because the repas size is gigantic. We also got the Boulettes Veggie/ Gluten free, some hot Jasmine tea and the mini pandan crēme brûlée. They have many dishes they can do gluten free and vegetarian. The waitress told me their brownie was gluten free but probably not dairy free.

Yelp
I would like to firstly point out that the back terrasse at this place is fantastic! The perfect little oasis on a busy street across the metro in Pointe St Charles, with plenty of comfortable seating, cute hanging lights, and a heating lamp for those chilly nights. Second, I must commend the great staff and perfect service. Our group was warmly welcomed and perfectly accommodated albeit a last minute surprise guest who wasn't on the reservation. The service was smooth and quick too! We all tried a variety of dishes from the menu but the papaya salad and chicken laab really stood out for me! Fresh, flavourful and perfectly executed; I couldn't get enough! Leave room for dessert cause you will regret leaving without having tasted their crème brûlée or even the decadent chocolate brownie with condensed milk ice cream! Did I mention that this is a BYOB and super affordable? Name your reservations now!
