Essential Napa Valley Wine Experiences You Have to Try - AFAR

"This cabernet-and-food pairing (reservations recommended; around $125) offers a seasonal four-course menu by Chef Britny Maureze that deliberately upends conventional matches—for example serving the 2017 Christian Vineyard cabernet sauvignon with a grilled stone fruit salad, using grilling to amplify sweetness and complexity so the tannic red and fruit become a complementary pairing; the menu rotates with the seasons." - Regine T. Rosseau

Stopped by right after brunch, and despite being one of the highest-rated wineries in the area, reservation was really easy. The outdoor space was gorgeous, shaded by massive sequoia trees, with plenty of patio seating. We got a cozy couch setup, which made the whole tasting experience feel extra relaxed. The basic tasting flight was cheaper than most others we looked into, but it ended up being the best we had that day. Thoughtful blends, generous pours (we were offered 8 glasses instead of the standard 5), and absolutely top-tier service. The Cambium and Reserve wines were our favorites.

Such a beautiful winery at the end of Napa, you pass Yountville going towards St. Helena/Calistoga and you’re right there. Greeted by their lovely Sequoia trees which you don’t often see out here but the property is gorgeous! I did a wine and bite pairing for 4 and our server Oscar was amazing and was very thorough. Sequoia Grover Winery has world chefs that have came and gone and I was excited to try their pairing. We were greeted with a welcome glass of Chardonnay, then 4 other reds. My favorite were the first 2, the cab franc and reserve. The bites were truffled popcorn, honey pretzels, meatballs with cab sac glaze, sourdough Foccacia and garlic olive oil, and a shallot dip. All so very good! They have shaded outdoor tasting areas and some indoor areas. Can’t wait to come back!

We had a lovely tasting here. The venue is gorgeous inside and out. Mark was friendly and knowledgeable about the wines and the history of the vineyards. I've been a big fan of their red wines, and today discovered and enjoyed the rose of gtenache. Highly recommend!

Google
Terrific experience. Great host, great wine, great food, very informative. The only thing that stood out was when we were reprimanded for taking photos with a state of the art camera that flys and they thought it was a drone and were spying. Kinda an awkward moment but other than that, we would definitely go back— but just take our Polaroid🤣 instead! Excellent winery!!! GO

Our team had a fantastic time. Nikki, our host, was awesome & the food pairings with their Cabernet's are wonderful. Sous Chef Ben is very talented. Highly recommended!

We had an amazing time at Sequoia Grove! The wines were all fantastic—smooth, well-balanced, and really representative of the region. But what really stood out to us was our guide, Serf. Serf made the whole experience feel personal, fun, and relaxed. He’s incredibly knowledgeable but explains everything in such a genuine and approachable way. You can tell he really loves what he does, and it shows. We've been to quite a few wineries, and Serf is easily one of the best guides we’ve had anywhere. Highly recommend stopping by Sequoia Grove—and if you can, ask for Serf!

Tom was very knowledgeable and gracious during our visit. He was patient while answering our questions and gave us a very positive experience. Highly recommend this winery and Tom as your host!

Enjoyed our wine and bites tasting. Really appreciated them for having gluten free options for those with dietary needs. Left with a bottle to share on our anniversary.

Yelp
A friend had recommended visiting here prior to a planned trip. Make a reservation. Like most places in the region, reservations are needed to experience their wines. I got us scheduled and it was well worth it. Mark was our host. He got us started with a taste of their Chardonnay. This was refreshing and delicious. Our tasting then consisted of their wonderful reds. 2018 Napa Valley Malbec which was made with 100% Malbec grapes. My personal favorite, 2019 Rutherford Bench Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The last two we tried were 2019 Tonella Vineyard Cabernet and 2019 Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Mark answered all our many, many questions. I think my husband had 2-3 more every time he checked on us. He showed us a topographical map of the valley which was fascinating. The land there is perfectly situated for growing grapes. This is a worthy stop for both the wines and the grounds. There is a fairy ring of sequoia trees in front of the building. Just beautiful.

Yelp
Looking for a beautiful winery with great pairing options? Sequoia Grove Winery offers a great house winery selection with potent flavors and an amazing pairing menu. Service was impeccable, Kenny took care of us and his expertise and candid spirit made this a great Valentín experience at gorgeous Saint Helena (close to Napa Valley).

Yelp
Love the experience here with the food pairing - you must try it. I live in Napa and this is the way to do it, showcasing the wine and food!

Yelp
We attended the wine and food pairing which was absolutely lovely. We learned so much and had the best time experiencing how wine can change with what you're eating. Highly recommend!

Yelp
While the wines at Sequoia Grove are quite good (I'd recommend the Cambium any day!) it's the food pairings that are exceptional! The chefs prepare a multi course fine dining experience pairing each delicious dish with a complimentary wine. Presentation is beautiful, chefs explain each plate and flavors are amazing. Highly recommend

Yelp
We here for tasting on a weekend, and were able to get a reservation for this on short notice. Had called in just a day earlier. The place does have the vibe of a cabin. On arrival we were seated in the patio area surrounded by the sequoia trees. It was really great day to be seated outside. Gary was an amazing host and he walked us through the different wines we were tasting. He did a cheese and lemon experiment while tasting one of the wines , and we were blown away by how drastically a food pairing changes the taste of a wine. That was definitely the highlight!
google avatar

Yelp
We had a wonderful wine tasting here back in April. Our friends had made reservations well in advance. The tasting is done outside and it is a gorgeous setting. There were 6 of us and we loved the Cabernets. Their food pairings were so delicious. Service is amazing- the team is so attentive and knowledgeable of all things wine and the area. It was such a fun experience.

Yelp
What a truly charming experience with great wine and delicious snacks. We can't wait to try the food pairing next time. Hidden gem and wonderful service!

Yelp
Overall, we had a decent time at Sequoia Grove, but it isn't our favorite Napa winery. Sequoia has some affordable tasting options, which could be great depending on what you're looking for. The estate itself doesn't have the grandeur of some of the other estates we've been to. When you first arrive at Sequoia Grove, the entrance to the property looks more like a small cabin in the woods vs. a sprawling Napa wine estate you'll see at other places. Upon entering, there are some clothing racks and merchandise available for sale. We were greeted and taken out to the patio for our tasting. They have a small patio area with some tables and couches for seating. Service was friendly, albeit a bit brusque. There were a few other parties there at the same time, and since the space isn't very large, it felt rather packed. We finished our tasting within 30 minutes, which we felt was pretty quick. Our server did try to sell us a bit but nothing over the top.

Yelp
What a beautiful spot! This has long been a favorite wine of mine. Today I had the chance to stop in and do a tasting. The people were amazing and welcoming. I had a really nice time tasting a bunch of delicious wines. The property is also just amazing. Loved getting to try it in person.

Yelp
Been a member for the last 3 years. The Cabernets do not disappoint. They are complex! The Cambium is delightful. Have not had any of the wines in shipments be less thank stellar. The Tonella is the one we like the best. However, they are all wonderful. Staff is attentive and helpful! Always a treat to visit.
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
First class! Wines are really, really good- not the overblown big Napa Cabs but rather more old school classic Napa which are just so well balanced! Visiting is so nice and special and their Wine Club Program is also really great. Brian provides elevated concierge service making recommendations and ensuring that we know our options in the program.
google avatar

Denise W.

Yelp
Wonderful ambience and outdoor seating area with pleasant staff. Wines are less developed and are a bit edgy. Not buying a bottle here.

Yelp
We decided to pick this winery for part of our wine tasting tour based on my love of trees. I know it's not the best way to pick a winery but turns out, that is all we liked when by the time we left. I did appreciate them greeting us when we walk in the door with a glass of wine. That is a great touch! Unfortunately no one in our group found a wine that they liked enough to take home with them. The bonus is they do have a charging station for electric cars, Which are Tesla compatible. We had a lovely sommelier that shared lots of historical information of the winery.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Incredible wines! Our family enjoyed our experience so much. Oscar made the afternoon such a pleasure by sharing what makes sequoia grove special. We enjoyed some yummy bites from the kitchen and ended the afternoon with a warm cookie and cab. Mmmmm! Beautiful grounds and perfect service! Thank you Oscar!

Yelp
I had such a great experience at Sequoia Grove. My host was kind and so knowledgeable on the history of the winery and its production methods. The food they brought out for me was exceptional and paired deliciously with the wine, especially their Syrah. Huge fan of their truffle popcorn and Cabernet meatballs! Thank you to the entire team at Sequoia Grove for your great hospitality and warmth!

Aljona N.

Yelp
Great place, tour, service, ambiance and of course wine is the best! It is a must in Napa
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
Friendly staff, good lineup. I love the cambium! They recently introduced food paring with the tasting...DON'T DO IT. It actually interfered with the wine. So even if you're a club member and can get the food paring for free...resist the temptation.

Yelp
DATE: 07/16/2022 Sequoia Grove is one of my favorite wineries I have visited in the Napa Valley. The location was very relaxing and a great place for outdoor wine tasting, especially during the summer heat. My friends and I reserved the Wine and Food experience for a selection of red wine. We were seated indoors amongst other customers with one sommelier. We had a pretty decent and interactive experience with the sommelier. I'm not quite a wine connoisseur, but the sommelier did a great job explaining the wine and food pairing. We started off with one red wine and a variety of food samples that resonates a taste (chocolate chip for sweetness, lemon wedge for sourness, etc.). The sommelier thoroughly explained how each taste enhances/changes the flavor of the wine, which gave me a greater perspective of how to choose the right food to pair with my wine. After that, we delved into the meals. I really learned a lot from this experience and I definitely recommend it for first time wine-tasting visitors!

Yelp
Very nice scenery great wine and delicious food. The food was incredible and the waiters were helpful not snooty and just nice all around.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere and service from KENNY! Beautiful outside area and everyone here is amazing. Will definitely be back! Stand out was the Rosé and Syrah!
google avatar

Lori F.

Yelp
What can I say, well this lovely establishment guided me and my palate to appreciate red wine. Sip by sip with lil tastes of the Cabernet, Merlot and more. Delicious memories. It has changed a lot in the 30 plus year since but the wine still holds a special place in my heart. Cheers!
google avatar

Meredith M.

Yelp
Small boutique winery that had delicious red wines and delectable food. You can't get the wine here in restaurants or anywhere outside the region, making it all the more special. Of all wineries, this was some of the better food on our adventures! The mushroom arancini will remain in my dreams, they were delicious. Myself and others in my party aren't huge Merlot drinkers, but they get their grapes from the coastline and it created a robust fruitful wine - we all bought bottles. Service was attentive, but not overbearing, and seemed casual/calm - not like the cattle call or rushed atmosphere of other places. It was approachable and also polished, which was appreciated by all. When returning to Napa, this will be a place I continue to visit. A high recommend.
google avatar

Holly K.

Yelp
This winery was a great location with several beautiful Sequoia trees scattered all across the grounds. The wine tasting room itself was small and quaint, with a few small high tops and a bar to sit at. You were able to do the wine tasting of all red wines, or all Cabernet wines (I liked that they offered both options), for a decent price. Probably not the place to go if you like only white wines. Thought the wine was just average, as was the tasting experience itself. Sounds like if you decide to visit, the wine AND food pairing would be the way to go (based on previous positive reviews).
google avatar

Brice B.

Yelp
We had a great experience overall and we especially enjoyed our tasting with Gary. He was extremely knowledgeable and his enthusiasm for wine was contagious. We loved the beautiful setting under the sequoia trees, and the laid back atmosphere made us feel very comfortable. Definitely recommend a visit to Sequoia Grove.

Yelp
Everything here is amazing!!! Where do I even start?! Wine quality: EXCELLENT! We started off with a Haire Vineyard Chardonnay that was not buttery (I don't care for buttery chards) easy going, with hints of lemon and apple, and some minerals. This might be one of the best chards I've had! The Atlas Peak cab was also amazing! For a mountain cab, it was very gentle and not particularly bold or overwhelming. Overall, their wines pair very well with food, and that's important! Service: AMAZING! Gary helped me with my wines and he was very knowledgeable and just a fun person to chat with! Kate was also very helpful! After I left, I called the winery and Vicki helped me out. She was very courteous and helpful! I really can't say enough about the high quality of the service here! Bonus: they serve food here and the the items on the menu are delicious! We ordered a pizza and some fried olives and had the opportunity to experience firsthand how well the wines paired with food! Wished more places would serve food to go with the wines. Wine Club: Fully customizable! How awesome is that?! A lot of places will either ship their most expensive wines or force a wine that's not very good onto their club members, but here, I get to pick specifically the wines I enjoy, and I'm very grateful for that! Great experience! I enjoyed this place, but more importantly, the wife enjoyed it (happy wife, happy life )!

Yelp
This winery offers a phenomenal wine + food pairing! I was here several years ago for a culinary challenge, and Dean was our wine educator (virtual wave to Dean) as we sat outside; the weather was perfect. They have done a fabulous job remodeling this room and transforming the entire outside area into a relaxing patio setting with comfy lounge chairs and fire place. Chef Britny Sundin Maureze sounded familiar as I had the pleasure of tasting her culinary masterpiece a decade ago at Chateau Montelena. She must've been 12 years old then, she looks so young LOL. Nice to see her in action again. The super talented Chef Britny led us through 5 amazing courses as follows: ~ Dungeness crab cake with whole grain dijon creme fraiche, herb salad, and marinated cucumber, paired with 2015 Haire Vineyard Chardonnay (Los Carneros, Napa Valley) ~ Alaskan Black Cod with garam masala, beluga lentils, pickled plum sauce, caramelized fennel and parsnip puree, paired with 2014 Tonella Vineyard Cab Franc (Rutherford, Napa Valley) ~ Ricotta Gnocchi with vegetable bolognese, roasted heirloom tomato marinara, roasted mushrooms, and shaved pecorino, paired with 2014 Stagecoach Vineyard Cab Sauv (Atlas Peak, Napa Valley) ~ Duck Three Ways with roasted duck breast, duck confit, duck "chicharron", toasted farro, currant & hazelnut gremolata, paired with 2013 Henry Brothers Cab Sauv (Howell Mountain, Napa Valley) ~ Cabernet Braised Short Rib with kohlrabi soubise, brown butter summer squash, cabernet demi, paired with 2013 Cambium (Napa Valley) We enjoyed the above-mentioned curated 5 course wine + food pairing in the Cambium room overlooking the gorgeous scenery. The food & wine pairing was indeed a full meal, not small bites, and to think we've finished our last course, Chef Britny saves the best for last...dessert! It was a decadent sea-salted caramel brownie to die for! This is definitely Michelin-star quality! Can't wait to return. Highly recommended for any special occasion in Cab country, or just because. Reservations for the Chef's tasting menu are required. 'Til we meet again ~ cheers and see you on Yelp (SYOY)!

Yelp
Very beautiful winery. We had the sips & snacks and everything was wonderful. I am looking forward to a return trip.

Yelp
Introduced to me by one of my husband's coworkers, Sequoia Grove's Chardonnay has become one of my favorites! So naturally, I had to go to the source on my last trip to Napa. We were welcomed to our tasting with a splash of a very unique Chardonnay that was actually made by 2 different winemakers: started by one and finished by another! It was so good, I definitely bought a bottle to bring home Our sommelier, Oscar, was an extremely knowledgeable wine educator and brand ambassador. Not only did he make the tasting worthwhile with great descriptions and history behind the grapes and wines, he also made it special by bringing us the most delicious brownies to taste alongside a killer Cabernet. Tbh, I loved every wine I tried You can also go around the main building to see vines planted for different varietals. Since we went during/ towards the end of Harvest, a lot of grapes have been picked, but the leaves were still so pretty with hints of autumn I can't wait to go back and visit (especially the winery dog)!
google avatar

Silver A.

Yelp
If you like California wine, this place is it. It's not Italian wine but it's good nonetheless the less.
google avatar

Eric U.

Yelp
We've been here a couple times for tastings as wine club members and the experience has been fantastic every time. We most recently had Gary help us and I can't say enough great things about him. He was very knowledgeable, charming, entertaining, and funny. As for the wine, Sequoia Grove is known for their reds, specifically their Cabernet Sauvignon, and they do an amazing job! They have a great variety from Cabs you can just drink on their own and enjoy, to more full-body Cabs that would pair well with a nice steak dinner or cheese platter. If you're strictly a white wine drinker, this may not be the best place for you, as they generally only have Chardonnay. It's a decent Chardonnay, but that will be your only option. If, however, you're a red wine drinker and want to have some of the best Cabs Napa Valley has to offer, do yourself a favor and come here!
google avatar

Tommy B.

Yelp
Sleepy tasting with very mediocre wine. We were so excited to try this on our first trip to Napa, based off all of the reviews. It was very disappointing.. The staff was nice but the entire vibe of the place was very sleepy, and perhaps old fashioned. It's very beautiful there! But it all just felt a little underwhelming. We were totally willing to not care about any of that if the wine was great! It was not.... Sounds like food pairings might be the way to go here? I hate leaving bad reviews but I would have appreciated someone saying this to me before we booked a tasting here. We only had so much time and wanted to really make the best use of our few winery choices. This one was a regret.

Yelp
My group of 3 were frazzled about finding a place last minute for a weekend tasting. We were able to do a walk-in, and wow this place's interior decor and surround landscape was so beautiful and rich in history. Kate was the one who took care of us for the most part. She was super down-to-earth, professional, knowledgable, and very kind. Any questions we had she answered in-depth. Our tasting was fabulous where we got to try several different fragrant wines, plus they were generous on the pour. We had a few questions on what made Napa wine special and Kate had Gary take us out to the vineyard where we were able to get rich insight to the process of cultivating their grapes into wine. He is incredibly passionate about the craft and made the wine making process very interesting to our group. We left the tasting very satisfied and with a lot more respect for Napa wineries. Will definitely recommend this to anyone and will be returning when I make my way back to Napa.

Yelp
Gary was our Wine host!! Such an AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!!!! Gary was extremely knowledgeable about everything regarding the various grape varieties etc. Thank you !!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice winery in Napa if you want to do a tasting of some reds! They had Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. They also sell snacks if you are hungry. The mushroom arancini was very good. Our sommelier was very personable and gave us tons of recommendations when our third winery cancelled cuz of the weather. They have cute bottle etchings too
google avatar

Rachael P.

Yelp
We were recommended this winery, and let me tell you... it did not disappoint! From the history of the Sequoias, it feels like you're in a backyard in the red woods. The staff were very knowledgeable and accommodating! Let me just say we will be back to enjoy some wine.
google avatar

Yelp
If I had to recommend a place to do a membership, this is definitely top 3! Not only are the wines amazing, but it's the only place where u can share your membership with friends and family that come to town without you having to be there! Lowest bottles were about $30 and the higher were about $165...so not bad when considering other places are usually $50-75 for the lower bottles. Here your membership is buy 3 bottles per quarter vs a dollar minimum at other places. So say you like the $30 wine...that's $90 per quarter, vs other spots where it is a $200+ per quarter membership fulfillment. I bought a bottle of the 2015, $155, which I was told will last a number of years. I really liked the 2013, $165, tho so decided on our following trip to get a couples bottles of that, plus a few others. Definitely looking forward to using my Coravin to start on some of these wines I've picked up. They were also doing a Christmas sale, so wines are even less! The ambiance with the little private fireplace was amazing and the customer service we were given when we went back to pick up wine...top notch! Highly recommend trying this place, especially the Cambium tasting. They do have other items not on the menu that are good as well.

Yelp
We had the best experience here. They were able to squeeze us in for a tasting on a Friday which was timely for my birthday. Shout out to Julie for making it happen and for Darleen for her impeccable service. We had an amazing time.
google avatar

Ria J.

Yelp
This was an absolute gem from location, ambience, hospitality and wine! Gary was someone we would have wanted to sit for hours with sharing wine with his spirit and knowledge. Kate was accommodating and just lovely in making sure our party was taken care of.

Yelp
Nice little gem here, tucked away with a beautiful open outdoor seating. I was pleasantly surprised how spaced out all the tables were - very Covid friendly so I felt very safe coming here. They offer two types of tastings - current release or single vineyard (all reds) and also a cheese & charcuterie pairing ($20). I was able to try the current release tasting ($40) as well as the vineyard tasting ($50) and was very pleased with what I tasted. Prior to starting the tasting, we were poured a Chardonnay not on the list and it was a great palette cleanser- a nice crisp start. I enjoyed the 2017 Haire Vineyard Chardonnay as well as the 2016 Reserve cabernet sauvignon from the current release tasting, and from the single vineyard tasting, the 2015 Tonella Vineyard and 2016 Stagecoach Vineyard Cabarnet were both outstanding. Yes I ended up buying 4 bottles in which by then I realized joining the membership to get the discount made sense. Haha. Yes, they got me but I walked away with some very good wines. I wish I could remember her name but we also had a great server. She's a student training to be a sommelier and was super knowledgeable and kind. If you get her, you're in luck!

Yelp
We did the cabernet and food tasting, which such an amazing experience thanks to Fernando. He was so knowledgeable and made the experience memorable. Excellent wines and great food, top notch service. We will be back!

Yelp
Thank you so much Sequoia for showing my dad a wonderful time. The kind woman at the front served us tastings inside despite us not having a reservation and the winery being booked up. My dad went there during his honeymoon in 1985 and really wanted to see it again. He unfortunately has terminal cancer, so our trip to Napa was very nostalgic for him. Thank you so much for your kindness, I will definitely be back! The wine was delicious as well. He bought a bottle to take on a romantic trip up north with my mom next month.

K K.

Yelp
This is a tough one. Did the food and wine pairing. Our hostess was fantastic. Pleasant, informing and engaged. The food was ok. Falafel and cod were okay. Duck empanada dry and cool temp. The steak and fries were poor. Fries were underdone and greasy. Steak was fatty and cold by the time I got to it. Whole experience was less than an hour. Not worth the money. And the wines were unremarkable. So much going on with the food that the wines all just did not stand out. Pretty place. Got some cool pics but we won't be back
google avatar

Kimberly N.

Yelp
Very cute winery and I love how quiet this place is. They have a decent charcuterie board you can order. I also appreciate that they are one of the easier places to get reservations at in Napa, it's all done online too. 40 pp for their current release tasting. I would say the wine is a solid 3.5 stars.
google avatar

Jack V.

Yelp
I've been a here a few times and always get great service. We had some friends from out of town and they said this was the highlight of their trip. Fernando was knowledgeable and kind and made our experience enjoyable. Our friends loved the service, wine, and the location. Can't wait to come again.

Yelp
One of my favorite experiences during our trip to Napa. We only did the wine tasting but I was so bummed that we weren't able to do the food pairing because it looked incredible. I think our wine expert was named Michael and he was so knowledgeable and gave us a great time. The outdoor seating underneath the huge trees was such a vibe and a perfect setting for a nice wine tasting. Michael even let my wife try multiple different white wines that weren't on the traditional tasting because she doesn't like Reds (yet) so we felt very welcome. Highly recommend: The Stagecoach Cabernet Sauvignon was my favorite wine that I tasted throughout my trip -If you're able to do the wine pairing DO IT -Their Sauvignon Blanc sells out fast so if your there when they have it you should buy it.

Mary-beth R.

Yelp
Good wine but our car got broken into along with 4 other people. The dim wit in charge did nothing. No help I'm now filthy from cleaning my car and my trip is ruined. No security. No help.... Nothing.Never again. My trip is ruined. I'm just told I'm sorry!
