Ramen Setagaya Review - East Village - New York - The Infatuation

"These days, it seems like everyone fancies themselves a ramen expert. Any time we bring up the topic - whether it be in the context of a review or even just casual conversation - someone chimes in with some bullsh*t about why [insert popular ramen restaurant] is overrated, while [insert nearly identical ramen restaurant] is more authentic and in Queens and how dare you. Apparently two trips to Ippudo makes you Ivan Orkin. Even though we eat a lot of the stuff, we certainly don't consider ourselves ramen experts. We're more of the mindset that good ramen is good ramen, no matter where you happen to find it. And Ramen Setagaya was the first place we ever found it. At least outside of a college dorm room. Many years ago, when Ramen Setagaya was on 2nd Avenue, this was the first experience I had with ramen that didn't come in a dry brick with a packet of delicious sodium poison. My eyes were opened to the glory of porky broth, chewy noodles, and soft boiled egg. It then became a regular dinner destination, even after some of the newer spots opened up nearby. Since then, Ramen Setagaya has moved to St. Marks, but everything else remains the same. We still love it most for its simplicity - you'll find no cheese ramen or ramen with corned beef here. Just traditional soups with really good noodles and plenty of cold Sapporo on hand to keep you occupied. How does it fit in amongst the many other ramen places around town? I'd say that we're probably not qualified to answer that question beyond the fact that we're always happy with a meal here. But if you really want to know, we're betting you won't have any problem finding an "expert." Food Rundown Miso Ramen Rich and delicious. Miso goes in the broth to add umami goodness, and that's a good thing. Shoyu Ramen The classic soy sauce ramen of your dreams. Eggs make everything better. Tori Paitan Ramen An almost milky chicken-based ramen that tastes like chicken soup on steroids. If porkiness isn't your thing, or even if it is, don't sleep on this option." - Chris Stang

Great ramen spot on st marks. Staff are very efficient and food comes out quickly. Ordered ramen takeout one time here and they package the noodles and broth separately. Noodles are always cooked perfectly al dente!

The ramen at this place is so delicious! I went spontaneously with a friend and got the Vegan Tan Tan, while she got the Vegetarian Spicy Miso Ramen. I tried both and was very pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is cozy and the bathroom was decently clean as well. Good service and location too. Will definitely come back if I'm in the area.

A very conveniently located ramen-ya on St. Marks place. The spicy miso was excellent for the price, with perfectly cooked chashu. The kara-age buns were surpringly very tender and delicious. The service was very warm and accommodating as well!

Just had lunch special here for the first time. really tasty and the flavors went together well. I thought the ramen was ok (only tasted the chicken shoyu). Most importantly, the food and atmosphere made me happy so I'm giving 5 stars. Reasonable price and polite attentive server. I would come again

I love Ramen Setagaya and take my kids here as often as possible. The food is exactly what you expect from Japanese comfort food and the ladies who work there are attentive and super polite. My heart wants to give it 5 stars, but my only issue is the size of the establishment; so small. If they had double the space, five stars hands down.

Absolutely everything I wanted. First ramen spot that actually satisfied me in terms of taste. I had the Shio Ramen and the bowl was fantastic as well as the service. Water refills at the ready. Very polite and speedy service. 10/10 would skip school to eat here again.

Every time I go to the city, I make sure to go to here for AMAZING & flavorful ramen. I love how they have vegetarian & vegan options! My favorite is the veggie spicy miso ramen which is $15

I think this photo speaks for itself!! I love this ramen place, I go with my friends all the time. Even if you don’t want this exact item, you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. They even have a vegan ramen option which is equally as good as the others, sometimes I even pick this when I want something vegetable based. This place is sooooo worth it.
