Seven Lions Review - Loop - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Seven Lions is the restaurant equivalent of laying up on a par five. It’s like betting on David Simms in Tin Cup, or Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore, if Shooter McGavin was less of a dick. And for those of you who have never played golf, never watched two of the three greatest golf movies ever (Caddy Shack is the other), and have no idea what we are talking about, the point is that Seven Lions is a safe bet. Safe bet because a meal here will be just fine. Nobody will be mad if you are the one that suggests it, and you won’t be mad with yourself. You’ll have an enjoyable time, there will be something for everyone, and you’ll walk away saying that was a nice night. But Seven Lions isn’t going to excite you either. Brussels sprouts and burrata, lovely, but no different than the other 879 versions you’ve had. Filet, enjoyable, but by no means memorable. Creamed spinach, why not, can’t really mess that up either. It’s like that acquaintance at work who is a “really nice guy,” but you don’t have much else to say about him, good or bad. Seven Lions pegs itself as a “modern interpretation of the classic clubhouse restaurant,” which we agree is a pretty accurate self analysis. It’s not crusty old lawyer in a three piece suit and top hat kind of clubhouse, but you can have a business meeting here during the week. It’s location in a historic landmark building right across from the Art Institute partially gives off this vibe, so there’s no reason not to utilize it for the need. On weekends, the crowd loosens up a bit for brunch, plus is a bit more lively at night. And owner Alpana Singh carries enough of a name to convince regular Chicagoans to spend a night eating in the Loop. She’s even present a lot of them time making sure things are running smooth and checking in on people to see if they are enjoying their meals. She seems like a nice lady, kind of like Seven Lions as a whole. Food Rundown Shishito Peppers Served with a cilantro vinaigrette. We’ve got a weird thing for shisito peppers when they are an appetizer or side, and these are no different than anywhere else. Fried Chicken Skins & Pickles There’s nothing not to like about these fried chicken skins and fried pickles. The skins have a good crunch, and the sriracha honey mustard they make is a great blend of flavors. Brussels Sprout and Burrata Toast This appetizer is mostly a plate of brussels sprouts heavily served over a bit of burrata and toast. Not bad, but nothing you haven’t had before. Fritto Misto The usual fried shrimp, calamari, smelt, and shishito peppers on a plate with a side of ranch. The midwestern child in us loves dipping fried stuff in ranch. Anything fried is really just a conduit for acceptably eating ranch anyway. Squid Ink Spaghetti The pasta is noticeably tasteless. It’s served with braised octopus, spicy tomato sauce, english peas, and crispy shallots that at least add some flavor, but we’d stay away. Petite Filet Not bad if you’re craving a steak, and feel free to go for something bigger too. The best part is the horseradish sauce they serve with the meats, which we like to use generously. Whitefish Might sound pretty boring, but the whitefish is the best thing we’ve eaten at Seven Lions. It’s perfectly cooked, and the ricotta gnocchi that comes with it is great too. A little side of acorn squash doesn’t hurt either. S’mores Bread Pudding We wanted to love it, but we just can’t. It’s a decent s’mores style pastry, but not real bread pudding to us." - Sam Faye

The application process was terrible, filled with indirect communication and a noticeable lack of direct answers to my questions. The leasing manager insisted I use a specific third-party insurance company, which I later found out the property receives a commission from for referrals. This felt unethical and forced. When I arrived for the tour, the manager was unprofessional and passive. During my visit, a resident confronted her in the lobby about the fire escapes being locked, causing her to have an emotional breakdown. She locked herself in her office and started crying, leaving me waiting for 20 minutes. When she finally returned, she casually mentioned that the tour was self-guided and the unit was already unlocked—something she failed to communicate beforehand. The entire experience was disorganized and frustrating.

I have been living at this property for a long time and this is the by far one of the best property Managers I’ve seen, Josefina takes care of any issues at hand, very professional and promptly and very helpful and consistent on communication, Josefina has always offered and open doors to all tenants that need help , thank you for taking care of my unit in a timely manner, I hope you continue thriving and hopefully will continue with assistance on this property. Thank you.

This is a great building. It’s a very safe neighborhood and my kitchen was definitely the highlight. The management company recently changed and they are great!! They redid the entire building and I love it here.

This is the worst building I have ever lived in and I honestly cannot wait to move out. The building was sold to a new management company this year, and the new manager is the most unresponsive and unreliable manager alive. As I type this, I am sitting in my apartment with no power in my living room and bathroom. This has been the situation for over 5 hours. The power shuts off all the time, and the manager can never be reached to resolve the issue PLUS she has refused to provide an emergency/maintenance contact I can call when she is not around (which is 99.9% of the time). I have literally gone over 48 hours with no power in my kitchen before! I know the rent may seem attractive initially but please don't live here if you're considering it; it's really not worth it. Living in an old building with a horrible manager is a bonafide recipe for disaster. P.S. Don't even get me started on the roaches, dirty “elevator”, dingy hallways and NO parking!!!

Please check on yelp for the real reviews of this building. All the good reviews for this place are fake and they all reviewed the same management company. STAY AWAY from this place !

Yelp
I was very pleasantly surprised when I came to this building for the showing. The apartments were so nice, the management was very friendly and the prices were so reasonable. I paid the deposit shortly after and got the keys to my new beautiful apartment. The service is pretty attentive - if you ever need anything, they are always there to help. They have a secure entry for the tenants making this building very homey. They do gardening and pest control pretty often. They have a manager on site who has experience and is helpful. Can't wait to renew my lease!

Yelp
Wow were do I begin. This is has to be the worst apartment building I've ever come across. These people ignored my phone calls and hung up on me several times, giving me the run around when trying to speak to someone about damage that occurred when a metal bar fell through my car windshield when they didn't take proper safety measures to work on this slum building. I'm left to pay for the damage. ALSO they don't look after their tenants, several have complained about the infestation of pests and maintenance taking WEEKS to simply change a lightbulb that was out of reach. Terrible music being blasted all night and as early as 6am. Stay away from this place, save your money! These slum lords do not care about you! Don't fall for the FAKE positive reviews.

Yelp
My experience with this management company has been a true pleasure. They're very attentive and reliable, would definitely recommend to a friend. Became close friends with the staff over the course of dealing with them.

Yelp
I posted this review on google but I am reposting here in hopes to warn anyone wishing to rent here: This is the worst apartment building I have ever lived in. The management changed constantly but they are all equally inattentive to their units. The building is INFESTED. I was lied to when I moved in about the infestation, my apartment was not finished and my stove and microwave were not even hooked up and the walls were unpainted when we moved in which was weeks after we did our tour. We are trying to leave but the landlord has refused to respond to me, ignoring my calls, emails, texts. I have lost furniture to the infestation in this building, my bathroom has flooded, the fire alarm will go off at all times of the night. If you read this it is a sign. DO NOT RENT HERE.

Robert G.

Yelp
Power goes out most weeks at least twice a week, sometimes for over three hours. It is always unclear who to actually contact for the building and very hard to get a response. Also any basic amenities like front door lock /gate keypad, trash and recycling will very often be out of order. They also lied to me that there was a wi-fi connection in the unit (had to pay for spectrum to come and install one) and that I could be added to waitlist for onsite parking $150/month (this simply doesnt exist). Worse thing though by far is that its infested by cockroaches they say they will treat it but it does nothing because the building is so dirty anyway, smells terrible. Skip it and pay a little more for rent, it will save you $$ in the end. They will also say they are changing management companies but it is a lie they just change the name I think to avoid lawsuits?

Sarah K.

Yelp
This is a great building. I love the service and the management company is super helpful. My favorite part of the apartment is the kitchen and the appliances were definitely a highlight. The neighbors are really nice. It is in a very safe location too. The apartment is very central for us and this feels like home.

Yelp
ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE BUILDING. Long story short, tons of uncontrollable roaches everywhere, parking is hell on Earth, manager and owner are insufferable to speak to. Laundry room eats money, they don't refund you. Packages stolen all the time. The elevator is very difficult to use, and out of service all the time, (I lived on the 5th floor and often had a cart with my groceries) Entrances are all stairs, no handicap entrance. If you're still not convinced here's some details starting with the uncontrollable roach infestation. We're very clean tenants never seen a roach in my life until this place. You can expect roaches to crawl out from any area of your bathroom or kitchen, even find them crawling on your couch, inside a lamp, or crawling across your desk while you're working. The only resolution they offer is to spay your unit every other week which involves emptying the entire contents of your kitchen cabinets and bathroom into your living area and cover it with a tarp while they spray your unit. Your pets must be out of the unit for at least 4 hours during/ after, and is only done on a weekday they choose and can be from anytime between "9am and 2pm" so I'm supposed to figure out what to do with my cats every other week, while I'm at work 9-5 just so I don't have to see roaches crawling on my belongings? Vanessa the manager will just talk in circles about keeping up with spraying and treatments and she's so sorry to hear this and that they do offer pest management and if we just keep up with the biweekly sprayings we should have no problem at all!! Curious though, if the sprayings work so well, why I would see roaches in the lobby and elevator literally anytime I came home late when the building was quiet. Constantly crawling on the walls in the elevator, so so so disgusting. Aside from roaches everything is falling apart even though it's all newly renovated units. The hallways and elevator give you a real perspective of the building, those should be red flags of what lies at the core of this place. If you have a car plan to use it never or spend hours of your day searching for parking, it's really as bad as everyone says. If you step in the grass surrounding the building you're likely to step in sh*t because people don't clean it up ever and there's lot of dog owners in the building who are obviously as disgusting as the building itself. Also have seen feces and urine in the lobby. Things take days to be cleaned up because the cleaning people only come once a week. You can hear all your neighbors, ours really loved to fight and f*ck. Our doorknob didn't work since day one of living there but we just used the top lock instead. Got charged for a broken door handle upon move out even though we told them. Also cleaned the place spotless and they still took half our security deposit and just said "cleaning". Vanessa told us while we were signing the lease that "we do not charge for holes in the wall so you can hang up anything you want or even paint!" Charged us a couple hundred dollars for "damage to walls" that was just nail holes from hanging things. Not even worth my energy to argue with them. By the time we moved out (two months early) we were THRILLED. I have never been so happy to get away from somewhere in my life. This was the worst experience I've ever had living anywhere. If I had to be quarantined in the apartment building right now I honestly might have killed myself. The disgusting and depressing thought of being stuck in that place is horrifying to me. I honestly feel so sorry for anyone who is living there and feels the way we felt. To feel disgusted in your own home is so awful. So thankful to be free in a clean building with no roaches, no smells, no pee, no poop, no screaming, no fighting, no moaning, no dogs barking, no searching for parking endlessly, no packages missing, no dark dingy hallway, no dirty carpet, no black paint, no piles of trash outside.... just so thankful to be done!!!!!

Yelp
In retrospect, I wonder if management was literally bringing in roaches and creating problems to get tenants out so she could get a bonus on new lease. Her unit was right next to the guy who knocked on my door for sex. She said she'd speak to him and didn't until another older gentleman on the same floor started hitting on me too. And anytime I report anything, she literally cannot contain her joy and is grinning from ear to ear while constantly looking away. It's like she gets some sick joy in watching others suffer bc she thinks they have it better than her. I haven't seen their cars parked in the ONLY parking for the building anymore. They literally parked there EVERY DAY and EVERY NIGHT bc she considers her family "staff" and would tow anyone who parked there momentarily. I wanted to believe she was doing the best she could based on what the property could do but fucking with the roof over people's heads is not cool. Have some fucking integrity, morals, and class.

Yelp
My experience at this apartment complex was horrible. Management is not great (and that's being nice). I could write a 10 page review but I won't. Just don't do it.

Yelp
Living in this building was the absolute WORST renting experience of my life. From the first day that we moved in, it was a nightmare. It all started with signing the lease. We moved to LA from San Diego. When we were scheduled to sign the lease, the manger Vanessa (who is a totally horrible person to deal with, and completely unprofessional and under qualified) said that she had a 'family emergency' and would have her associate there to sign our lease with us. Well, she sent the maintenance man, who I'm pretty sure is not authorized to sign a lease, and who also laughed when I said I hope everything is ok with Vanessa's family emergency, and informed me that she was at Disneyland. We moved in 2 weeks later. I was pretty shocked when we walked in to our newly remodeled apartment to find that they never cleaned up from the work being done. Construction buckets, layers of dust, it was disgusting. Not to mention there was a broken window, no pole in the closet to hang our clothes on, and no flusher handle on the toilet. After a long day, I turned on the bath water, only to have the knob break off in my hand with water rushing and no way to turn it off. Once we were settled in, things never improved. The building is COMPLETELY infested with cockroaches. Their ill attempts at spraying, using two different companies yielded no results. Vanessa is never in her office, and next to impossible to get any kind of help with. She is full of excuses, and puts blame on everyone but herself. One example was when I tried to get ahold of her with no success, days later she told me that her phone had been confiscated by an employee at Target. WHAT?! Seriously, I don't know where she comes up with this stuff. The building not only had cockroaches, the tenants in the building are just as disgusting. They let their dogs urinate ALL OVER the building as well as poop everywhere and just leave it. When I have left emails and messages to Vanessa about poop in front of the mailboxes, and in the elevator, she never responded or had it cleaned up. Apparently that wasn't her job. There has also been on more than one occasion vomit in the elevator and at the front entrance, that would stay for DAYS. Oh, and speaking of the elevator, it constantly breaks down. In June, I noticed a spot on the wall that looked like it was from a leak. We showed Vanessa, who told my husband yes, it looks like a leak, and NOTHING was done! It wasn't until a month later, when brown sludge water started streaming down the walls that a maintenance man came to take a look. During the process of the leak, we were in formed of NOTHING. It was still a problem when we moved out. Parking in the neighborhood is horrific. Good luck. After a long day of work be prepared to circle the block for sometimes over an hour. Again, another nightmare of our renting experience. We were so disgusted with our experiences, the building and Vanessa, that we actually moved out a month early and paid rent for 2 apartments. We couldn't stomach one more day. So our lease is up and nightmare over right?? WRONG. As we all know as renters, we are to receive our deposit by 21 days. Well, those days came and went. We even gave it an extra week thinking it had to have been in the mail. It wasn't. We emailed and called Vanessa multiple times, with zero response. I had to track down the actual owner of the building, which was not easy. She said that she would have the maintenance man look at our apartment for damage (there was none, we left if cleaner and in better condition than when we moved in) to see how much of our deposit we would get back. No. It's past the legal amount of time they had and now they owe us the deposit entirely. When I mentioned this she agreed and we FINALLY have gotten our money back. The owner was actually very nice, but they need to realize that as long as they have somebody like Vanessa running their building, they are going to have a very difficult time keeping tenants.

Yelp
I lived here for a year and just moved out a couple months ago. I know to take yelp reviews with a grain of salt, but if you're looking at moving here, please at least talk with a tenant first. The building is wildly infested with cockroaches. If you complain, they will have someone spray your apartment, but it won't accomplish anything (they spray mine 3x). Pretty embarrassing having people over and having roaches running around and getting into your food. And I don't just mean one or two occasionally, if you turn the light on in the kitchen at night, you'll see 5-10 scurrying away every time. It's disgusting. There is very little hot water pressure, so I hope you like cold showers. It's a high density neighborhood, so parking is impossible. I typically had to park over a half mile away (and still had trouble finding a spot)--especially at night. I usually had to park on Vermont (meaning I had to get up at 6:30 am to move my car). The elevator breaks down all the time. People leave their trash in the elevator and on the stairs. They had to take the recycling bin away, as people were overfilling it and leaving their trash on the ground. Like Sandra mentioned, I also did not get my security deposit back from them and had to threaten legal action in order to get their attention. I finally got it back a month later, and they deducted a $115 cleaning fee. I was ultimately refunded for that, as they couldn't justify it, so it sounds like they do this to everyone. The rent was pretty reasonable though--$950 with utilities included, so that was nice. But not worth all of the trouble.

Yelp
The Seven Lions Apartments is a great place to live. The staff and management are great willing to make this place a place you'll love. Friendly and convenient. Unfortunately, after 4 years of living in the wonderful place I had to move with my job. I very was sad to move my job relocated me but I would so come back without thinking twice about it. I give it 5 stars because that's what it deserves.
