Le Grotte della Civita, Matera, Southern Italy - Explore & Book

"Le Grotte della Civita is a truly unique hotel, set in Unesco-listed Matera. Overlooking the deep Gravina gorge, the town's old quarters (sassi) are built into and over limestone caves, and interwoven by narrow cobbled streets. Inhabited since prehistoric times but abandoned in the 1950s, these remarkable underground spaces are now being reinvented as restaurants, boutiques and even art galleries. The hotel itself consists of 18 such cave rooms, all renovated over 10 years with obsessive attention to detail and utter respect for the past. We arrived on a misty night and opened our gnarled wooden door to find a 6m-high vault flickering with candles, like our own private cathedral - a truly sensational first impression. Simple wooden furniture, carved crosses and cosy nooks are the only visible decoration; but closer examination reveals concealed spotlights in the walls, underfloor heating beneath the time-worn stones and, in many rooms, an oversize egg-shaped Starck bathtub in the depths. With fantastic breakfasts, friendly English-speaking service from Michele and his team, and wonderful trattorie and ancient rock-hewn churches on your doorstep, it's an unforgettable break from your day-to-day travails. Highs Incredibly romantic, with glowing candles at every turn – and there’s a true cultural element to it, tooThe caves themselves are an architectural triumph. All are different – some have soaring ceilings and roaring fires, others spectacular views of the gorgeMatera is a beautiful town with a fascinating history. Its narrow streets and prehistoric landscape offer a taste of rural Italy that you won’t find elsewhere But it’s not just caves and old churches: there are cool boutiques, fountained squares and buzzing eateries to exploreHotel breakfasts are delicious: home-baked cakes, handmade jams, herb-dusted cheeses Lows It’s pretty hard to find, and you’ll have to park on the edge of town (though you can drop off luggage first). Be sure to bring the detailed directions provided when you bookThe caves are scattered across a slope, with public pathways in between, and it’s a steep climb to some of them from receptionStandard Rooms can be cramped – upgrade to a Superior or higher if you canExpect uneven floors and limited mod cons (no TVs, minibars or the like), though amazingly there's WiFi throughoutIt's quite expensive, especially in busy periods (April, May and August), when rates double" - Michael Cullen

Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita (Matera, Basilicata) 25 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The phrase albergo diffuso might not yet be entirely familiar to English-speaking travelers — or, for that matter, to Italian ones — but the concept that it denotes is one we imagine will quickly catch on. Call it a “distributed hotel” if that makes it clearer — or just take Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita as an example." - Tablet Hotels

We had high expectations for our stay at Sextantio. The pictures of Hotel on the website promised a truly unique and luxurious experience. They did not disappoint. The caves are rustic, memorable yet luxurious with ample toiletries and comforts available. The location is incredibly ideal to navigate by foot bus or car.. The breakfast were some of the best I ever had in my life. Lorenzo made us feel part of the family and was incredibly friendly and accommodating.

What an amazing and unique experience!! My husband and I stayed here for the last 5 nights of our honeymoon and enjoyed every minute. We were looking for a unique place to stay and we definitely got it here!||We stayed in room 10, which was a surprisingly roomy cave on the end. There was a second room at the back with a nice bathtub and candles everywhere. Even the Sassi tour guide we had one day said that this hotel had the best cave rooms in all of Matera, and that it was restored with love and great care.||The food was amazing (still dreaming of that ricotta cake at breakfast!). We booked a cooking class with Nunzia and then had a private candlelit dinner in the restaurant - it was one of the best nights we had during our entire honeymoon. I cannot recommend that experience enough!!||Everyone on staff was attentive and kind. I'd like to extend a special thank you to Piotr, who kept our room stocked with delicious wine, and Sara, who paid extra special attention to my food allergies.

Lovely unique hotel carved into the rock face . Rustic feel with cave rooms and breakfast area . All terraces rooms have a stunning view and have a unique old monastery type feel with a lovely touch of having candles lit in every room. Nice breakfast with local products unique to the area , they also do a limited service between 3-7 with a few eats and alcohol options , have the lasagna its fantastic . staff are very welcoming and knowledgeable. One word of caution make sure you wear comfortable trainers with a good grip as access to the hotel is cobbled which obviously adds to the charm but can be slippery which isn’t only in the hotel area but across all of Matera which is stunning like a Game of Thrones movie set so many tiny little lanes and stairs . If you have a car there is a central car park at 40 euros a day which supplies a shuttle service to the hotel word of note you will have to leave your car keys with the garage but it’s safe to do so . Matera itself is beautiful with lots of attractions walks bars and restaurants

Staying at this hotel was an incredible experience! We loved the vibe and unique setting in a cave. The decor was simple yet elegant. The candles made everything romantic.||We did find the rooms and the weather to be quite hot, but a quick request for a fan was promptly met, which helped immensely. ||We had breakfast, aperitif and a dinner there and the food and service was top notch. ||If you're looking for an unforgettable and distinctive stay, this cave hotel is definitely a hidden gem!

Unbelievable stay!! If you can, try and book the caves, it’s really worth the experience. The hotel staff are so accommodating and friendly. Breakfast room was awesome. Remember to wear comfortable shoes as the streets can be uneven and there are a lot of stairs. Highly recommend staying here….

Absolutely magical experience and best hotel in Matera! Two Australians who absolutely loved this entire experience from the breathtaking view at breakfast, to the romantic candlelit cave room. We loved the location & the way they treat the beautiful cats of Matera. The breakfast was divine, and the staff so friendly. Highly recommend!

An experience to remember! From the moment I arrived, I was warmly welcomed and instantly felt at ease. The staff were absolutely wonderful — friendly, thoughtful, and always ready to assist with anything I needed. The room was charming: spotless, tastefully decorated, and full of little touches that made it extra special. The overall atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing, and the location was perfect — close to everything, yet quiet and tucked away. I’m definitely planning to come back. It’s one of those rare places that makes you feel good the second you walk through the door.

Authentic cave hotel painstakingly restored to it's original state. Very poignant accommodation to stay in when visitn the beautiful ancient city of Matera. The staff were great and very helful recommending best approach for seeeing the town and places to eat. Breakfast was authentic local food and super delicious. Conincidentally our stay coincided with the esta della Madonna della Bruna, which treated us to the most incredible (and unexpected) fireworks display.||Interestingly this is the third cave hotel I've stayed in. The others were definitely more luxurious, but I think that's because theowners of this hotel have tried so hard to restore the rooms to how they would have been when families lived in them hundreds of years ago - with the addition of running water and electicity of course. I wouldn't say that one way is better than the other - just different.||Secure parking is provided offsite with a shuttle to the hotel. We left all our luggage in the car and just took a small bag for the time we were here. This worked very well for us.

Yelp
Romantic doesn't come close to the magical dreamy place this is. Yes, lots of walking and mostly up and down stairs, but this is a cave city. 1,000+ years old. Actually, my lower back felt better walking the terrain then other cities which have flat paved streets. Our room I could relax and enjoy nearly all day. Great food at the hotel such as the buffet breakfast or dinner. And some of the best tasting bread we've ever had is in this town.

Yelp
Stayed here at the end of our Backroads Puglia bike trip. I see that the reviews are a bit mixed but most of the negative reviews seem to be from several years ago so maybe the kinks have been worked out. The entire town of Matera is an indescribably magical place that pictures don't do justice to, and this hotel fits right in. Yes, the rooms are created from a series of caves. Yes, our room had a tub in the bedroom (but a separate sink and toilet area). Yes, it got a bit dark when the sun went down but it was not problematic. Reception staff was terrific, as was the breakfast spread. The room did get a little stuffy at night (climate control is outside the room), but the hotel staff quickly bright a fan when we requested one. I'm not sure I would want to stay more than two or three nights here, but it was the perfect place to stay in one of tbe most unique towns I have ever seen.

Yelp
Amazing experience in a real cave! Authentic original peasants' houses reconverted into beautiful hotel rooms according to a preservative restoration. Unique!

Yelp
I'm graciously giving it two stars because if I give it 1 they write some lame rebuttal. The entire situation was riddled with inaccuracies. 1) they DO NOT in fact serve dinner (fine print - unless you have a large party and book well in advance). 2) the rooms might be authentic but we had no mirror. This can be a problem when they don't serve dinner and we need to go out. I had to use my iphone camera to shave. There were millions of mosquitoes because there are no screens on the windows. The shampoo was in a giant ceramic thing which visually was cool but the shampoo came out in either thin liquid or clumps on your head. 3) there are an amazingly large number of stairs to get to each room which isn't something that people going out and in during the day could possibly find appealing 4) no parking 5) there is this weird 30 day cancellation policy - which makes sense if you made reservations for more than one night....probably everyone wants to leave. I'd say that if you are young and adventurous and don't care that you are paying a LOT for a LITTLE then this is the place. There are better places in town. And if you really want to "relive" the past (which is that in the 1960's the Italian govt everyone out because of malera) then this is your place. For us, a local tour guide filled the bill on hearing and seeing the amazing history.

Yelp
If you like mold in your sink and shower then look no further and enjoy this enchanting hotel and we were one of the lucky ones that got a shower in the room. There is no air conditioning, fans or any means of air circulation. Oh I forget to mention no windows either. I guess that is why there is so much mold. Moist warm air from a doorless shower just festers in the room. The perfect environment for mold to grow. Some rooms do not doors in the toilet area. We were lucky in this area too. We got a door even though it did not close. I can look away dr
