Shabu Plus Rotary Hot Pot - Review - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Shabu Plus Rotary Hot Pot just opened a location in Chinatown. Like its Wicker Park sibling, this AYCE Japanese shabu shabu spot serves diners their own personal hot pot set-up with a choice of broth and 60+ ingredients that conveniently arrives at the table via conveyor belt. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

I had high expectations going into this place but the food was a let down! The broths are all flavorless :( I found the chicken breast also lacking in flavor. It felt very dry. Not the hot pot experience I expected, and it’s not very often when a hotpot experience has let me down. I must say the smoothies were great, the only silver lining. We had to keep using the device to clear up the table which made it even more annoying. I wish the operations were better. I think I will explore more hotpot places in Chicago in the future.

Usually, this place is half empty whenever we walk past. It just so happened that we came here after C2E2, that it became ridiculously busy from all of the tourists. For dinner they have two options, adventure for $27.99 and ultimate for $39.99. Honestly, for the minor difference you might as well go ultimate. You have 90 mins to eat. After you get seated, you order your broth, make your own sauce, and then proceed to gather what items you want from the conveyor belt. The conveyor belt has vegetables, noodles, tofu, fish balls, and fish cakes. You can order your meats and drinks from the tablet. The meats and drinks will come on the train (you’ll see). Service was great, they do a good job at picking up the empty plates and getting you whatever else you need. There is a station close to the sauce bar for picking up more chopsticks and silverware. For meat selection, it’s not as much as Happy Lamb or Qiao Lin. In terms of value, $40 is a decent price for ayce hot pot. It’s very tourist friendly.

Another AYCE Hotpot, Except you get your own food from a conveyor belt. You order choice of broth and it comes in an individual pot. There's a $27.99 and and $39.99 option. Go with the higher ultimate option because you get better meat (chuck roll, rib eye) and a variety of non hotpot items (spam fries and salmon sashimi). Meats, drinks (includes unlimited soda and one fruit smoothie), side items and desserts are ordered thru a tablet and it arrives on a robotic train. Great tasty food. Fun and unique experience.

Google
This hot pot place in Chinatown is fantastic! 🥢 It’s very easy and comfortable to eat here, and the ordering process is super simple. The quality of the meat and shrimp is excellent—fresh and flavorful. 🍖🦐 The price is a little on the higher side, but totally worth it for the quality and overall experience. Also, if it’s your birthday, you can eat for free—so don’t forget this awesome perk! 🎉 I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a satisfying hot pot meal!

Google
AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!! Loved the incredible variety of fresh meats, fresh vegetables, noodle varieties, sauces (recommend the sukiyaki) handmade appetizers, desserts, fruit, drinks and the to-go fresh fruit smoothie to end the meal -WOW. The conveyor belt constantly brings new items directly to your table, such a unique and fun meal -can’t wait to return on our next trip to Chicago. We did the $40/person option (way more meat selection) so with tax and tip the total was about $150 for three people- pricy but worth it for the quality and amount of food included. Definitely check it out -so much fun.

Wowowowow! We came at 9pm and it was a discount per person at $16.99 for the mostly vegetarian rotary or on demand. You can still get non vege options w this deal like quail eggs and pork dumplings. This deal doesn’t come with dessert but you get a free drink like soda or lemonade w free refills. I love that you get to add any sauce you like and the amount after you order the soup base.

Rotating Mini Hotpot — Amazing lunch deal, great environment, and perfect for vegetarians! This place is an absolute hidden gem—especially during lunch hours! If you’re looking for a satisfying, affordable meal with a clean vibe and great service, look no further. Let’s start with the food: The lunch set is perfect for vegetarians or anyone looking for a lighter meal. The rotating belt constantly brings a variety of fresh ingredients—vegetables, tofu, mushrooms, noodles, rice cakes, lotus root, and more. Everything tastes fresh, clean, and is available for unlimited grabs. Although the lunch deal doesn’t include meat, dessert, or smoothies, it’s still incredibly filling and costs less than $20 including tip. That’s hard to beat in Chicago! The DIY sauce bar is another highlight. You can create your own perfect dipping sauce with garlic, sesame paste, scallions, cilantro, chili oil, and more. Plus, they even have fresh fruit like pineapple, strawberries, and melon—super refreshing after a hot meal. Meat lovers—no worries! If you choose the premium option, you can order unlimited meat directly from an iPad at your table. The portions are generous and the quality is great. Before leaving, you can also order a smoothie to go—perfect sweet finish to your meal. Drinks are unlimited and included in the price. There’s a good variety of both hot and cold options, and they’re self-serve—super convenient. What impressed me most is the environment: The restaurant is very clean, well-lit, and cozy. Tables and floors are spotless. And best of all—the ventilation is excellent! No greasy, smoky smells at all, even though it’s hotpot. You won’t leave smelling like your meal. Food arrives quickly, staff are friendly and efficient, and used plates are cleared promptly. It’s a really pleasant dining experience from start to finish. Parking is easy and cheap. There’s a connected parking lot, and if you show your parking ticket to the front desk, you get 3 hours of parking for just $2. That’s such a deal for city dining! Final thoughts: This place offers unbeatable value with a relaxing, clean atmosphere and top-notch service. Whether you’re dining solo or coming with friends, it’s a fantastic spot for lunch or dinner. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
Super fun rotary hot pot place in Chinatown. Different levels of all you can eat ingredients. Adventure course is $27.99 and the included meat is bacon, pork shoulder and chicken breast. Ultimate course is $39.99 and the included meat is rib eye, NY strip, chuck roll, beef brisket, jumbo shrimp and other sides. The Spam fries were really good and cutely presented. Each person in your party has to pick the same course. We had the ultimate and especially enjoyed the rib eye, NY strip and shrimp. There’s a topping bar where you can mix up your own sauce. There was also some fruit. Most of the meat comes to you on a little train above the rotary area. There are over 60 toppings that come around on the rotary belt. The mushroom broth was really good. There are also plenty of desserts you can order and everyone can get one fruit smoothie. The mixed berry was especially good. Good food and a really fun experience. Give it a try.

Yelp
Very good choice of meat. The broth was tasty and the food came out very fast. Awesome environment!

Yelp
I had only gone to the Wicker Park location previously but there is way more seating at this one. Though, parking in Chinatown is tough during evenings and weekends. The weekday lunch option is such a good value!! It's $15.99 and the only caveat is that meat is a la carte pricing. My friend and I ordered three meat options and our total with tip ended up being around $24. It seems like it's busy over the weekend. I had originally planned to go on a Sunday evening and it was an hour long wait.

Yelp
Shabu Plus Rotary Hot Pot in Chicago's Chinatown elevates the hot pot experience with its modern take on a classic concept. The restaurant's interior, dominated by a mesmerizing conveyor belt, creates an atmosphere that's both visually engaging and conducive to a satisfying meal. The premium all-you-can-eat option, while boasting quality ingredients, falls short in variety. For the price point, one might expect a more diverse selection, particularly in terms of proteins and seafood. This limitation becomes apparent when compared to other hot pot establishments in the city. At ~$180 for two, including drinks, Shabu Plus positions itself in the upper echelon of hot pot dining. This price tag demands scrutiny, especially when considering the somewhat limited range of offerings. Where Shabu Plus truly shines is in its service. Even during the weekend rush, the staff maintains a level of attentiveness that's both impressive and appreciated. The absence of long waits, often a dealbreaker for many diners, is a significant plus. The individual hot pots allow diners to craft their own culinary narrative, selecting broths and ingredients to suit their palates. The rotary system, while not groundbreaking, adds an element of entertainment to the dining experience.

Yelp
I've come twice for the weekday lunch special so far. $16 ayce of all 60 items on the rotary belt and juice/soda options with a la cart add ons for sliced raw meats, cooked dishes, and alcohol. Super worth it! The staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. The digital display is easy to use and also includes a timer to help you pace your 90mins. The music isn't too loud. The bathrooms are clean. There's also lots of seating options. Each table is sectioned off well with access to the rotary in the middle. There wasn't ever anything that I wanted that wasn't refilled on the belt. All the items were fresh. It's a great place for vegetarians or when you want a good fill of a variety of veggies. A ton of mushroom and leafy options. I like that I can focus on these healthier options even though it's ayce. I've only tried the tonkotsu broth. My bf tried the spicy kimchi and found it a bit too spicy. The sauce bar has a lot of options to mix and match. I enjoy the fresh fruit too. Most ayce places just have oranges but here they have melon, pineapples, grapes and strawberries.

Yelp
$16 lunch special M-F soooo worth it and so generous! It only includes conveyer belt items but that's so many!! It's more than just veggies. Loved the individual hot pot broths although it's sad to only be able to try one option since they all looked good. Really appreciated that the sauce bar had some premade sauces to make it less overwhelming. Service was very nice! You order most of the stuff off an iPad but you can call them to refill your broth and get you drinks. Really fun experience overall. Will be back hopefully.

Yelp
Friends treated me to the limited time only lunch special that is AYCE shabu for $15.99 which included all items off the rotary belt, sauce bar, fresh fruits and a selection of soft drinks. This price didn't include any sliced meats and I didn't try any sliced meats either, so I can't provide a review on that. I ordered the mushroom broth and cooked many different vegetarian, quail eggs and some processed meat dishes (spam, fish balls with roe, stuffed tofu pockets, dumplings, etc.). The ingredients were fresh, cleaned well and are as delicious as they can be for hot pot. The broth is light and not too salty. They claimed there are over 60 different items at the rotary, but I only tried about 13-15 of them. Sauce bar is similar to all the other hot pot places in Chinatown, except no free appetizers or large variety of snacks and desserts. My Jasmine tea was light and went well with my food. Overall, I stuffed myself silly for $21 after tax and tip for lunch despite not having any sliced meats. I enjoyed my meal and very grateful for the experience! However, if I wanted a variety of sliced meats and fresh seafood, other AYCE establishments provide better value. What I like about this joint is, I didn't stink of hot pot broth upon leaving so their ventilation must be pretty effective. The service is also welcoming and informative. I also like the higher tech aspect of having a tablet at each table to place orders, requests service, tally up your bill, see remaining time, etc. Another plus, is Sushi plus also validates parking at the lot. I recommend this spot for first timers to hot pot and also those who are vegetarians for this lunch special.

Yelp
We visited for the first time today for their lunch special. I came with my husband and 2 kids. We each selected our own broths: 2 mushrooms, 1 tonkatsu, and 1 kimchi-jigae. The rotary was well stocked and had a great selection. We considered ordering additional plates of meat, but didn't want a too heavy lunch as we had planned to go downtown afterwards. We really likedthe pea tips and variety of veggies and noodles. Service was quick and efficient. They did a great job of explaining how to get started and also kept our table clear of clutter. Next time we will come for dinner to get more of variety.

Yelp
I already want to go back! Such a fun experience! I like that each person gets their own broth. It's truly so much food. So maybe have light meals all day before this? A friend and I went for lunch a couple days ago. We got the adventure lunch. Again, it's SO MUCH FOOD! But sooooo delicious. I got a tonkotsu broth. I think next time I'll try sukiyaki broth. I love the dip bar and fruit. And the appetizers are really good! + desserts and a smoothie?? You get well worth your money! My friend and I arrived right at 11:30 for lunch, and by noon the place was packed! So come early or be prepared to wait. They are pretty strict with the 90 minute time limit. I totally didn't think we'd be there that long but when they gave us our 15 minute warning I was so surprised. We will be back. It's so fun inside!!
google avatar

Christina T.

Yelp
Walked in and was greeted right away with a smile on the staff's face! It definitely felt welcoming. The place is spacious and clean and the staff was very attentive. They were always checking in to see how everything is going or if we needed anything. We went with the ultimate menu, and it had a lot more different options to choose from. I felt a little overwhelmed at first, but it was fine. One thing at a time. It's a cool concept and I can see the staff is more at ease and not stressed to bring everything out to the table. It gives them more time to talk to the customers and check in on everyone. I liked the sauce station as well. A plus for me was their sanitation station! Loved that! I will be back again.
google avatar

Nolan F.

Yelp
Best meats are chuck roll and ribeye without a doubt. I even left a ribeye slice longer in the soup a few minutes longer than I should have and it was still tender. Rotary ingredients were either frozen or fresh which is fine. Good sauce selection. Complimentary fruit smoothies were decent. Salmon sashimi tasted weird. My problem is the menu options. There are two courses: adventure ($28) and ultimate($40). In adventure, there is NO beef; only bacon, pork shoulder, and chicken breast. If you want a normal hot pot meats experience, they basically force you to pay more for their ultimate course. This is unethical in my opinion. No issues with service.

Yelp
Shabu Plus offers a delightful dining experience that stands out in Chicago's vibrant Chinatown. The moment you walk in, the modern decor, paired with traditional Asian elements, sets a welcoming tone. The ambiance is lively yet comfortable, making it suitable for both casual meals and special gatherings. The star of the show is undoubtedly the shabu-shabu. The menu offers a variety of fresh ingredients, including premium cuts of beef, succulent pork, and an array of vegetables. Each diner gets their own pot, allowing for a customizable cooking experience. The broth options, particularly the rich and flavorful bone broth, elevate the meal to another level. Service is attentive without being intrusive. The staff is knowledgeable, offering recommendations and ensuring you have everything you need. The pace is just right, allowing you to savor the food without feeling rushed. One of the highlights is the dipping sauces--each is carefully crafted to complement the fresh ingredients perfectly. The spicy sesame sauce is a must-try for those who enjoy a little kick. For dessert, the mochi ice cream is a delightful finish, providing a refreshing contrast to the savory meal. Overall, Shabu Plus combines quality ingredients, a fun dining concept, and excellent service. It's a perfect spot for both shabu-shabu enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Highly recommended for anyone looking to explore the delicious offerings of Chinatown.

Yelp
Great place! You get your own hot pot to cook in. It is harder with kids as you have to help your kids cook the food as well. The veggies, fish balls, meats and hot pot ingredients come through a train (like a train on top of the conveyor belt). Each customer gets one free smoothie (also come through the train on conveyor belt). There is a sauce bar with fruits that you can walk to pick out. Decent dessert options to pick from - we loved the creme brulee! The mango duck pudding was okay but very cute to eat. We all had the ultimate and it came with salmon sashimi. This place is lively! No reservation. We came for dinner around 545pm on a Saturday and had to wait 20/30 min. 90 min limit on eat time (there's a timer on the screen where you order your food). I would've given this place a 5 stars, but it is missing one star because we asked for things (like forks or why is our dessert not here yet after 20 min) to one of the wait staff - he acknowledged our concerns but never came back to us after we were there for 90 min. So we just left.

Yelp
Lunch hotpot is one of my favorite hobbies lately. I saw this location has a lunch special and opens at 11:30 which is a double win! You can add meats and seafood at lunch for an additional cost but if you hit just the rotary, it's $15.99. There's plenty on the rotary to keep me full so it's a great deal. Their sauce bar is sizable but not extensive. I wish they had a few more offerings. All of their sauce mixes are a little too sweet for me. Overall an excellent experience!
google avatar

AJ L.

Yelp
Amazing place. Would definitely recommend and it is an all you can eat place, it has super good sides and unlimited desserts and drinks. It also comes with a compliment smoothie. The broths are also very good.
google avatar

Jackie R.

Yelp
My family LOVES coming here. All the food is very fresh & tasty. I love the option to either pick our own sushi from the rotary or you can order what you want and it comes out on a train. It's family friendly, they offer chopsticks for the kiddos little hands & they have a cute kids menu that comes out on an airplane. The drinks are very good and please make sure you save room for dessert. Sometimes they have the crepe cakes, sometimes they have cheesecake slices from the Cheesecake Factory. All the times I leave happy & excited to come back. Oh and by the way, I love that they give you a loyalty card to stamp to get a free spin on their wheel for cool prizes.
google avatar

Helen T.

Yelp
Tasty hotpot spot and the conveyer belt is such a cute and convenient touch! Service was excellent and I enjoyed the selection of items for hotpot. I chose the mushroom broth and it was a great combination of savory and sweet! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Nancy P.

Yelp
I have been waiting for this place to open and it was worth the wait! We got the ultimate with the tonkatsu broth. We ordered beef and shrimp. I love that you can just grab what you want off the belt! Your meat comes in the train above. It's the cutest thing. Will definitely be back
google avatar

Ask for Thi she is awesome sauce my daughter ask could she have a hug from Thi because she was sooo nice!! I would come back especially of Thi is going to be there!
google avatar

Yelp
This location offers a different variety of appetizers and smoothies compared to the Wicker Park location, which we really liked. It has a little something for everyone, making it a great choice even for picky eaters. The space is spacious and clean, and the staff was super friendly and attentive, checking in on us throughout our visit.
google avatar

Marquita E.

Yelp
This will have to be my favorite Restaurant I love the food and the staff. Friday was busy day we waited about 45 min but we're seated probably. The restaurant is beautiful. The staff that prepared the food allllll had on mask. This was a great experience that was shared with My son and grandmother.
google avatar

KELLY M.

Yelp
First time here for my sister birthday celebration. This place be busy majority the time I pass by but on a Monday evening I would say it's not that busy. The choices isn't bad. We got the ultimate package so we able to eat different type of beef. Now the shrimp is my favorite part. It so jumbo and sweet. The veggie and noodle are fresh. You get your own pot and get to choose what flavor broth you want. For the sauce there is a sauce bar where you make your own sauce. The interior design is nice and bright, music isn't loud where you can't hear your friend conversation. I would highly recommend friend and family to give this place a try. Oh they give a free smoothie!!! Love that. I got the mixed berry taste sooo good.
google avatar

Kaii L.

Yelp
The food was really good came in a fast pace. The meat was very tender. Will recommend that you try the New York steak and the smoothies are delicious
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
The food was good. Everything was cute and the idea is really cute. The place is clean and all. There's not much service to be spoken of except in the back of the kitchen. Asked for tea on the iPad and I didn't get it until I flagged down a staff when they were at the next table. Same thing happened when I asked for more broth on the iPad and nobody came and I had to flag somebody down when they were at the next table. The desserts that are included are cute.
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
This was not our first choice for dinner but it had the shortest wait. The selection of meats and veggies were great, but the noodle selection could've been better. I loved how there were free slushies and desserts included. The bacon was strange.
google avatar

Stars L.

Yelp
I'm in town for another week and I really want to come back before I leave! Great food for the introvert who wants to go out for food lol A lil robot brings your food, which is bomb af. My dude had the tonkotsh broth base and I had the kimchi jigae
google avatar

Rayanna Patricia B.

Yelp
Excellent place for hotpot! Everything was clean and fresh. All of the broth we ordered were very refreshing and flavorful. Big plus because we got such amazing service from all of the servers while we dined here.

Dorrian S.

Yelp
everything was good and was a nice vibe and really good broth and desserts, and drinks

Dewei Z.

Yelp
Good food, good deal, service is on point. Overall pleasant experience! Recommend if you're in Chinatown.
google avatar

Mei L.

Yelp
This is THE best shabu shabu in the entire city! Guys, I am a vegetarian and there are plenty of options for me. I am so happy to have found a place that I can get my hotpot fix. The prices are incredible for the quality that they offer. The veggies and variety of tofus are the most I have seen of all the hotpot places I have been to. I definitely will return again real soon!
google avatar

Mae B.

Yelp
Fast service. Clean restaurant and a lot of items to choose from. Reasonable price and free smoothies! The broths were tasty!! Definitely recommend this place!

Zuzanna W.

Yelp
I had an amazing experience at Shabu Plus in Chinatown, Chicago. The food here is absolutely delicious, and there's such a wide variety to choose from, so everyone can find something they love. The soups are flavorful, perfect for the cold weather. One of the best smoothies was the mixed berry smoothie. I also really enjoyed their sauce mix bar, which lets you customize your flavors to suit your tastes. Everything was fresh, and the service was friendly and efficient. And our favorite worker Thi, I'm pretty sure that was her name. Gorgeous girl with ginger hair, super charismatic and friendly!

Daniel T.

Yelp
While the price point may seem high they give you so much food. Including appetizers, drinks, unlimited meat and add-ins (somethings cost extra, but we didn't end up ordering them -- the standard menu was perfect), deserts and a free fruit smoothie (at least when we were there). You just need to eat everything. There are definite a wide array of vegetarian and vegan choices. I would caution if you're considering the spicy kimchi broth unless -- very spicy -- order if you can't get enough spice (if you like spice but not southeast Asian levels of spice, the have a large sauce bar with plenty of spice options).

KK N.

Yelp
I think they just opened about 1 month ago. Excellent service. Staff are friendly. Good hang out place. They have 2 price ranges. One is less than $30 dollar. The ultimate is $39. We went with the ultimate. Kids under 6yo eat free. 6-12yo will have a discount, about $10 bucks. We enjoyed the free smoothies and desserts. Will definitely come back.
google avatar

Ruilin H.

Yelp
Super yummy! I got sukiyaki soup base, super tasty. The meat is fresh and the service is awesome!
google avatar

Nic N.

Yelp
Good date spot, shrimp was a good size and service was helpful. I suggest getting the free pineapple smoothie

Kid S.

Yelp
Awesome customer service, food was excellent, great music, menu was awesome and lots to chose from.
google avatar

Maira M.

Yelp
It was delicious and affordable, I will definitely be coming back soon. From the different options of broths and cute duck desserts all amazing!!!!!
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
The service from the moment you walk in until you leave is prompt and helpful. Food was great like usual. Atmosphere is a good chill vibe.
google avatar

Wei M M.

Yelp
Customer service is very good here. Our table was cleared of empty bowls very quickly and liquids refilled promptly. I prefer this type of hot pot because the meat comes in manageable amounts. The vegetable selection is nice.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Amazing service and quality items. Everything on the rotary was amazing as well! I would come back just for those items alone. We'll definitely be back!

Jerry Y.

Yelp
Went there to try their special AYCE offerings. But that offer does not include meat, which costs extra per plate and could add up to quite a bit if one orders a few plates. Feels like a fast food joint and you might be better off going to a regular AYCE hotpot place that includes both meats and veggies.

M H.

Yelp
Hosts was very kind and explained the menu well for it being my first time. The service itself was amazing, every worker was kind to us and informative. The place was clean and super cute

Alex S.

Yelp
Great Place friendly service everything explains so well and the food even better!! And the ambiance is so clean and modern
google avatar

Aaron L.

Yelp
Decent variety, fast serivce (better than a fast food establishment) -- attentive staff, and clean bright atmosphere.

Duo T.

Yelp
Everything is perfect in here. The constant movement make everything so fun. Great meat and sauce choices.

Steve P.

Yelp
Stopped in for an early dinner and was blown away by the atmosphere and quality of the food. Great entertainment to have the rotary food options as well as the "ultimate" items delivered via tram. Every service person (and there weee many) was smiling and attentive without being intrusive. $40 ultimate meal was worth every penny

Deisha D.

Yelp
If you're ever in Chicago, this place is a must! 10/10 recommend. I'll be coming here again!

Sandra O.

Yelp
The food selection is great. I loved the concept and that I had my own hot pot to customize to my liking. The service was amazing, can't wait to come back.

Eduardo S.

Yelp
Great Food, service and ambiance! Staff is attentive and friendly. Clean dining area and bathrooms.
