What a great breakfast! This is a terrific little diner. The staff are very real and friendly. The food is tasty and just the right amount. Some places try to overwhelm you with food to somehow make it better. Not this place. I got plenty of food; it was the right amount that I could eat it all ( happily ), feel pleasantly full, and not feel like I wasted food. We’re coming back here again soon and recommending it to friends!

I went in here recently for breakfast and I have to say it was an amazing experience. Service was fast and quick. The waitress was very friendly and funny. The cook Ramon did an awesome job with my omelette. I ordered the hashlette and it looked and tasted delicious. There was a good vibe in there. I have to say the cook and waitress make you feel like you’re part of the Shady Glen family. I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you’re looking for a hidden gem with a yummy breakfast. Next time, I think I might try the breakfast burrito. Highly recommend.

I knew as soon as I walked in this would be a gem. The coffee was great and bottomless, the omelets HUGE and pancakes perfectly golden brown with fat blueberries. It was just the chef and hostess today the banter was lovely and playful, and was a very warm inviting environment. It was too quiet for how good it was on a Sunday so I highly recommend stopping in if you've never been. This is going to be our new spot, even 40 mins away. I can't wait to stop in again, you guys were amazing.

Google
Perfect small town New England diner vibe. Wait staff and cook are super friendly and attentive. Great spot for a tasty breakfast, hot cup of coffee and to find out what’s going on around town. Sat by myself at the counter and read my book for a while and then chatted with the cook while he was making my food. Even though it was only my second time, I felt like a regular.

I NEVER leave reviews on places but this one is a must. I got up wanting to grab some breakfast with my partner and after attempting 3 times to find some where to go, we settled on this place and it was an utter mistake. The atmosphere was calm but everything looked grungy and dirty. Windows hadn't been wiped down or cleaned in a while, I could tell. The coffee is absolutely awful. Not even mediocre at best. I had 2 over medium eggs, corned beef hash, "home fries" (weren't even half way cooked, drier than a nuns hooha, and just tasted gross like they were old and outdated), and white toast. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The hash was alright. The toast.. well... how do you really screw up toast? My partners breakfast burrito looked like dog food and he couldn't even finish half of it because he said it wasn't good. The waitresses were nice. But now on to the cook. This gentleman was of large stature, bald, Caucasian, and not hygenic at all. He did not wear gloves which would be fine if he washed his bear paws before touching food. I watched a waitress bring a ticket over to him after he had been leaning on the counter, playing on his phone, and touched and scratched his face numerous times. He grabbed the ticket and immediately started raw dogging all of the food without washing his hands or putting gloves on. I had just finished what I could eat of my food and saw all of this and immediately got nauseous. We will NEVER be going back. And for wandering/wondering minds... I have been a cook myself for almost 18 years and I would NEVER let this stand. I would NEVER serve people this food. And I would NEVER let the lack of hygiene in this place fly. I'm incredibly disappointed and praying we don't get food poisoning. Lastly, the prices are definitely not worth it. Please don't eat here. Save yourself from this disgusting environment.

Google
Our kind of place. Loved the prime rib hash, my wife loved the French toast. We’d come back! Across the street from the bike trail if you’re bringing your bike.

Google
This was an excellent experience. The interior is quite homey. The staff were very friendly and professional. The food was delicious. There is plenty of parking around the building and in the area. I was able to enjoy the hashlette. I am looking forward to going back again soon!

Google
Coffee was mediocre at best, food wasn't bad but uninteresting. Staff was friendly, but not very attentive, and took a while for a coffee refill. Its an old diner that has past its best days, and most of its clientele are retired folks who have always gone there.

Leslie O.

Yelp
Wow, wow, wow! Talk about a diamond in the rough. Small town, quiet area, playground/skate park around the corner. Nice views all around you. This place is small but cheery! No wait, got seated at the bar right away. (That's where we prefer). Waitress was kind and said hello as we walked in. The cook walks around as well; we got to say hi to him and give him a big thanks for the delicious meal he made for us all. Got myself the Irish Benny! It was extremely tasty. Visiting Greenfield, Turner Falls area...? Go check this place out. Enjoy a wonderful breakfast, you deserve it!

Carol W.

Yelp
The service was good, but watching the cook make our meal and continuously touching his cell phone and then our food grossed me out. I know how dirty cell phones are and your hands should be washed.

Jo I.

Yelp
If you're in the mood for hot breakfast served up fresh from the grill (maybe a bit greasy), can't find anything else open, and don't mind coffee being a little on the burnt side, this is the place to go. We stopped by here for a quick bite recently, and oddly it was one the only place in the neighborhood that was actually open for breakfast / brunch. Old Town Diner feel here, this place is absolutely no frills. Seems like a good amount of locals were here as almost every seat was filled at 10am. Let them know ahead of time if you want butter on the side, as all of our toasts (even French Toasts) were pre-buttered quite heavily. Our grilled chicken sandwich was heavily spiced with rosemary, it was a bit overpowering. Otherwise, our food was cooked to order. Another forewarning, in order to access the bathroom, you have to exit through the backdoor and go around to another door in the back of the diner, restrooms are situated physically behind the kitchen. Service was above average... timely to take our order, but to get the food and the check took a while.

Howard B.

Yelp
3 stars equals A-OK in Yelp land and that is a good rating for Shady Glen. The net, net is: The service was good. The food was fine. The prices were cheap. I bookmarked this place since I had seen it on an Anthony Bourdain show + I love diners. Well, this place is no better than average. I am sure the food is consistent here, so if I lived close by I likely would be a regular and find some items they do better than others. The atmosphere delivers in the kitschy cool sort of way. The place looks like an old ice cream place. They have these ugly yellow counter tops that are cool because you will likely never see that shade anywhere else! Anyway, check it out if you are so inclined. Its quick and cheap and not half bad.

Judith M.

Yelp
I've reviewed this place before, but I guess it didn't upload?? ive been coming here for years but still not add long as most if the locals bellying up to the yellow counter for solid diner breakfast and the classic housr roasted turkey. It's not the same add when the original owner greeted every customer from the spot at the corner & there was a pie list to maker my father in law weep, but it's still a neighborhood anchor with decent food that preserves the sense of this communities history. Well worth coming over the newly opened bridge for!

Vikkie P.

Yelp
Food was decent people were friendly. But that's besides the fact that the cook does not wear gloves nor does he wash his hands after putting his hands in raw eggs.

William I.

Yelp
Today I went for a ride to Greenfield and was in mood to stop and eat at a Diner so Looked at Google and saw this place So decided to stop by for lunch wow they were awesome I ordered Turkey club sandwich with fries They were so so good Good portions Turkey was fresh and thick I'm glad I stopped by Friendly waitress nice old fashioned atmosphere I will definitely stop by again if I'm in the area

Yelp
They r not like they use to b!! I have not been here for a while .. I ordered onion rings w/a fried chicken dinner. I watched him them cook it. He re-fried frozen chicken! Even the onion rings where frozen!! Those where really bad.. they didn't give me the fries that came with it! Ya it was pretty bad!! Threw that in the trash!! Almost $20 for crap frozen food!! Really need a good place to eat around here!! What to do? Frozen is frozen.. I have had the same meal from John Carey & it was awesome! Been going there since a little girl & stopped when it got sold & went down hill figured I would try it again .. live & learn!

Dan R.

Yelp
We went to Shady Glen today for a late breakfast and found it to be delicious. I had pancakes and home-fries, while my partner had eggs, ham and pancakes. Both meals were great and really filling . Since it was a late breakfast we decided to both get mimosas, which were also delicious. When having our mimosas we broke out laughing because we noticed that our Champagne flutes had wedding dates on them from 2012. Finding this on the flutes added a little character to our breakfast. The staff was great and we can't wait to go back to this little gem in Turners.

Cathy G.

Yelp
If you are thinking of stopping in for a bite to eat, DON'T! Keep driving. Shady Glen puts the "grease" in "greasy spoon" and not in a good way. My wife and I stopped in for breakfast. Part of our order was bacon, cooked crispy. Not only was the bacon not crispy in the least, it was so greasy and tasted like the grill had not been cleaned in awhile. The waitstaff was very nice. The restaurant was clean and well maintained albeit very cold. One expects warmth and cozy on snowy, winter days. Regrettably, I can't recommend this restaurant.

Jack M.

Yelp
Been for breakfast a few times. The people who work here always seem a bit on the grumpy side, but who cares. This is an old diner (no diner car - just a restaurant) here in Turners Falls. Odd yellow decor inside, but the food is pretty darn good. Old school diner stuff. I always like my breakfast here and you will too!!!!

John W.

Yelp
First time and won't be the last time. Food was excellent. Old school diner with great food, doesn't get any better than that.

Joe H.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast burrito! Charles, the owner, accommodated a group of over 50 hungry travelers on their way from Providence, RI, to East Dorset, VT. Nobody left hungry and everyone agrees it was a great stop. Get there early, they close at 2!

Not T.

Yelp
It's a cute little diner but doesn't seem very sanitary, they didn't wear any gloves while cooking, tables were a little dirty, and everything seemed kind of run down, especially during this pandemic I expected it to be a little more clean... the people were very nice and I can see they mean we'll just wish there was a little more effort out into the safety and cleanliness of others

Hassan E.

Yelp
The most tender clams and delightful sweet potato fries for $10 that I can remember eating out the cape.

Thomas R.

Yelp
Delicious diner food with some surprising extras on the lunch menu! Their spinach pie is particularly delicious. I was surprised when I saw that they serve alcohol too! All in all this a hidden gem.

Justin S.

Yelp
Straight up greasy diner food. Not great, but not awful. Definitely a good idea if you feel like coating your intestines with some slippery fatty food. The most telling thing about the Shady is the exterior view, which allows you to see the inch think layer of filth spewing from the grill vent onto their sign. Bottom line: Hangover breakfast

George T.

Yelp
Having just moved a couple blocks away, being a fan of diners and having a wife who's a native, we've popped in a couple times so far. It's a clean, brightly lit place, open in the pre-dawn hours (well, you've got to cater to the local icefishers!), all of that. The service is good, and the prices are as well. I wouldn't rank the food over my favorite diners in Greenfield (Brad's and Denny's), but it's been perfectly edible and with reasonable portions for the price. It's well worth patronizing.

Scarlet S.

Yelp
Its hard to live or work in Turners without hearing about the Shady Glen. My coworkers would frequently go for lunch and I couldn't help but be curious, what was so great about this place? Honestly, the first time I went I had no idea what to expect, all I knew was that whenever my coworkers came back from lunch they had smiles on their faces. Let it be said that one of the most awesome things, right off the bat, is OFF STREET PARKING!!! Everyone in Turners knows how difficult it can be to find parking when its meal time because street parking can fill up fast. But I've never had any difficulty finding a parking space when going to the Glen. Its enough to put a smile on your face even before you walk in the door! Another nice feature is that if you park in the back, you can walk right in through the back door without circling around to get inside. If you do take the back door, you can see the bathroom to the right. I know its a hassle to walk outside, but I've had to walk through mazes to get to bathrooms at other restaurants. Taylor's Tavern, anyone? As long as you know its there, you'll be fine. Its just a few steps away. Once you get inside you'll notice how lovely this diner is. They cook your breakfast right there in plain sight! How awesome is that? I love the character the Shady Glen has. Now, there's not tons of seating. You have the booths and the counter. If you have a few people and want a table, you might have to wait for someone to clear it off. But in my experience, even going at lunch hour, I've rarely had to wait. Tip: let the shorter people in your party sit closer to the wall in the booths, the way the tables are held up makes it a little crowded for the long legged among us to sit on the inside. As for the food, everything is bursting with flavor. Breakfast is my favorite meal, so I can only speak to what they serve for breakfast, but I have yet to be disappointed. I recommend the omelettes, there's a million choices and if you don't like any of those you can make your own. Though the sweet stuff is good too, they make delicious pancakes and french toast. If you want to have some fun, definitely try to mimosa. I've yet to have a better one. The only hazard is I always leave totally stuffed!

Jimmy J.

Yelp
I've stopped here many times over the years. The newest owners seem to have made this place more of a "greasy spoon" type of place. The breakfast fare is "okay", but certainly nothing above and beyond. The atmosphere is a bit run down, with torn seats, and not the cleanest tables. There was one cook and one waitress when I was here. They seemed like they were struggling to keep up, yet there weren't many customers.

Amanda F.

Yelp
We've been several times and it has always been excellent diner food. We have gotten both great sandwich and fries or onion rings as well as a hearty breakfast. This place has delivered amazing diner meals every time. We have always left full and satisfied but not completely broke!

April G.

Yelp
This place is fantastic! My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast on Saturday. Their coffee is only $1.25, with unlimited refills!! It was good too! I HATE breakfast places that charge $2+ for coffee, so was super pleased to see that. I had the french toast combo ($6), which included two eggs, 3 pieces of bacon, and 4 huge triangles of toast. It was the absolute best french toast I have ever had in my life. It was soft and custardy inside, just the way I like it, with a nice crisp but not dry crust on the outside. I want to eat it again right now. They have other diner-y sandwiches and meals on their menu. I want to go back for the hot turkey sandwich. I bet it's delicious! When we left we were the only people in the place, so they had started their post-breakfast cleaning. Two of the employees were on their hands and knees cleaning the counter stools with steel wool. I was so impressed! This place may be a greasy spoon, but it sure isn't grimy. The service was nice and friendly too. In sum: it's clean, the people are nice, it's inexpensive, and the food is great. Oh yeah, it's warm and cozy in there too, which I appreciated when it was 20 degrees out.

Steven H.

Yelp
I good place for a basic breakfast or lunch. Breakfast is straight from the grill behind the counter and the prices are good. I don't recommend using the bathrooms though. You have to go outside, then in through the back, and they are small and unheated. They are acceptable if you can stand up.

William E.

Yelp
Stopped in here for breakfast on my way back home from a project in Colrain. Had the two egg scramble, hash, homefries and raisin toast...washed it down with two cups of coffee. I was very impressed with everything....except for the hash which was standard can or Sysco stuff. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the homefries had a nice season to them. Very good coffee...not great....but very good. The place seemed to be very clean and was staffed by very nice employees. Well worth a stop if you're looking for a quick meal while traveling on Rte. 2.

Pook A.

Yelp
We look forward to stopping here when traveling up to Northfield. Today's corn chowder was delicious as it was truly homemade, hot and yummy. My husband's Turkey Club was made with freshly sliced turkey .... YUM!

Ant M.

Yelp
I would of gave it two stars if it wasn't for the homemade raspberry cream pie. The eggs, toast and home fries were ok, the waitress had our slip ready and didn't ask if we were all set, which we were not. Would come back for the pie, O and if you want to use the bathroom you need to go outside.

Alison L.

Yelp
A great little breakfast place with something for everyone on the menu. My kids think the pancakes are the best around!

Smiley H.

Yelp
You can tell a lot about how good a restaurant is going to be regarding the attitude of the wait staff.. The waitress I had, dressed in a tank top and yoga pants (not exactly professional), was more interested in chatting with the other employee sitting at the counter eating. No friendly greeting or anything. She took my order, however the cook delivered the food. She never came back to check on me or to see if I wanted anything, like say a refill on my ice tea. I ordered a cheese burger club with fries. Oddly they offer a choice of hand cut or frozen fries. I opted for hand cut. I asked her to have the burger cooked medium rare. Medium rare is pink. There was definitely no pink in the burger. The burger patty was very small, it didn't even fill 2/3 of the bread on the sandwich. It appeared and tasted like it was steamed, there were no grill marks on it and it didn't have that grilled taste. Also, the fries probably would have been good if they were not cut so thick. They were not cooked all the way through and didn't have the crunch on the outside that you would expect fries to have. I finished my meal and probably sat there for more then 10-15 minutes waiting for the waitress to come back, perhaps suggest dessert or even bring my bill. I had piled everything onto my plate, utensils, napkin etc. which to me is a universal sign of "I'm finished". I had to go to the counter and ask for the bill. Again, waitress was not friendly, barely said thank you. I believe in tipping for service. I understand most wait staff work for tips with a menial hourly wage. It would be my suggestion to this waitress that she at least smile, perhaps consider being friendly, the tips would likely be better! Gone are the days of John Carey, the original owner who always greeted every customer with a smile and hello when they walked in. Also, the older ladies that worked in the kitchen making such yummy foods and desserts! It may have looked like a diner then but the food was definitely first class! Very sad that things have changed so much. Overall, very disappointing!

Cece R.

Yelp
Typical greasy diner food. The food is average quality with only a few things on the menu worth ordering but honestly, none come to mind. The place is filthy and you need to walk outside to go back inside to use the bathroom. The staff tends to ignore you unless you are a "townie" and known to them. It's a shame the food and service isn't more welcoming since I love to support local businesses.

J S.

Yelp
I like a good diner; not a polished, gleaming diner, but a faded, greasy diner. The Shady Glen is just that. My two friends and I had breakfast last weekend and the total bill was less than $24. The only negative was the home fries; they were cut like scalloped potatoes so they crumbled easily, and didn't have any seasonings or the nice crust that makes a good home fry. Thumbs up on the omelets and the breakfast sandwiches.

Clare H.

Yelp
Literally some of the worst food I've ever had. Please do not eat here. And the service is just as bad.

Daniel S.

Yelp
"Delicious, cheap, super friendly folks. Ask for a picnic table outside and they'll set one up for you. I'm a fan"

Andy T.

Yelp
The Shady Glen is probably the most diner-y diner in greater Western Massachusetts. It's really truly been around forever, and caters first and foremost to a local crowd that's been around forever too, and likes solid food at fair prices. It can be a little awkward walking in if you don't know the deal - service does not tend towards warm and welcoming, so you kinda have to make a place for yourself and ask for what you want. It's possibly to view the slight surliness as part of the ambiance - more authentic, right? Anyhow, solid food and good prices, if you're looking for a diner you won't regret it.

Marco N.

Yelp
Went for breakfast Coffee was so so Eggs done just right. Home fries were gd, toast was gd,bacon very lousy. Place was clean and friendly.

Kathleen M.

Yelp
Always there, always good, (except for that 3 months 4 years ago, in between owners). Good, solid diner breakfast and lunch, dependable eggs, diner coffee (you can drink 4 or 5 cups and still function) excellent pancakes, good pies, good price

Debbie B.

Yelp
Great food. We had homemade soup and sandwiches, burgers and a special order omelet that was made perfectly. The owner happened to be our server and couldn't have been nicer. The homemade pie brought back memories from many years ago. Come to find out, the woman who makes the pies, made them for a prior owner years ago. I will make this a stop on each visit home. Can't wait to return.

Tommy V.

Yelp
Was driving to VT stopped for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised. Small place great food and fine service a must if u are in the area.

Bill L.

Yelp
We always enjoy the Shady Glen. They have add many daily specials and have very convenient hours

Sha S.

Yelp
The summer day that the flies repeatedly landed on my arms and food ended my occasional visit here. I complained to the waitress and she said, "I know, the owner makes us keep the windows open." I wanted to throw up. The owner wasn't In sight. I probably should have called the board of health.

Alex G.

Yelp
This place is a f***ing legit, classic American diner. A local institution. Not as great as it was under previous management, but still a nice place very much worth visiting.

Kristal L.

Yelp
This is my favorite local diner. Good food, good service, and lots of good people watching. Everybody gets a full belly at a decent price served with a smile (or a frown). Love it.

Olivia S.

Yelp
The pancakes were amazing. It'd been awhile since I'd eaten good pancakes. We showed up during a busy time Sunday morning, and the owner pulled out a picnic table for us to eat outside and not have to wait. Also, it's really close to Farley Ledge. So if you're climbing stop by and have a bite.

William D.

Yelp
Went back here a few time for breakfast and their burgers which were better than McDs'. Stopped going there after the staff ignored our existence because we were not recognized as regulars. The grilled food last time tasted like a ton of lard.

Shay C.

Yelp
Tried and true, The Shady Glen is clearly the long-standing local favorite. It's the definition of "no frills dining" in the best possible sense. You'll get efficient service while you watch your (eggs/ pancakes/ sandwich/ burger) get grilled right in front of you. Perfect place to chat with locals or read the paper while you wait. Very small, very old school, very small town Americana. You'll leave satisfied and your wallet won't even know the difference.

Kristy M.

Yelp
I've worked as a diner waitress for years before, and I have never seen a waitress so unfriendly, and so angry just to have to serve someone! I guess her name is "Carrie" because I heard an older woman say, "Oh no. Carrie is working today." She eventually took our order, begrudgingly, never filled our coffee, or even come by to see if we needed anything. We sat there waiting for the check for 15 minutes...the place was not that busy by this time. She came over, said nothing, dropped the check on the table, and walked away. We went to the counter to pay our check, she gets angry over the machine, and throws a receipt, hitting a customer at the counter, who jumped, and then dropped our receipt to be signed on the counter in front of us. She never said, "thank you" or "have a nice day." She just walked off. I whispered to my husband to not put too much of a tip, and another guy at the counter heard me, laughed, and gave me a thumbs up. Worst service ever! I can't believe someone working for tips acts like this! We drove a long way, because a friend told us the food was good, and I don't care how good the food is, I will never go back!

Mark S.

Yelp
Very interesting combination of food and service. This establishment has a history of a good reputation for food. The food is great diner food, no doubt about it. The service is lacking. The owner was easy to identify. He was the one strutting around looking important while tapping away on his smartphone. Too bad he was busy focusing on his smartphone instead of acknowledging his customers or lack of service to his customers. The counter help was too young to be experienced in food service or even customer service. It may have been too advanced for her to ask "would you like more coffee?" during our breakfast. Eye contact? Then we might ask her for something so avoid eye contact at all costs. Drive-thrus have more customer service. My advice is to keep driving as there are plenty of other local places that serve great diner food and compliment their menus by offering sincere service. Maybe somebody should text the owner on his smartphone and see if he notices?
