I'm a fan of the Shake Shack. But I put the Shake Shack in the league of fast food thin-patty burger chains. Yes, we'll always have the Texas institution Whataburger. Sure, we may be stuck with California's In-N-Out. And locals love to talk about the thicker-patty, pricier Hopdoddy. So where does this leave the New York transplant?
Somewhere in between at the purgatory. But this purgatory is good, because we're still surrounded by hell, ya know.
Plus, comparing with Whataburger, In-N-Out, and whatever else - the plain ShackBurger (aka cheeseburger) is good but it's not going to have anybody raving. But still, you cannot not give kudos to the Shake Shack for coming up with a burger that features Lockhart's BBQ sausages. And their thick concrete shakes are sometimes innovative.
What really won me over are two things in the menu - and yes, two things only - that got me raving... and one of them will be a surprise. Read on, read on....
1. Shack Stack - the ShackBurger stacked with the fried portobello burger. But this fried portobello is stuffed with cheese that oozes out as you bite in - and it's rich! It's good! It's richly good! Get this if you love portobello and also having lots of cheese in your burger. But yes, this burger is pricey, coming just below $10. Still, I get hankerings on ordering it again - because it's that artery-busting-but-don't-care good. At least there's no bacon, so you can say it's on the healthy side.
2. Shack-cago-style Shackburger - yes, this is the surprise, an off-menu item consisting of a regular cheeseburger, with all the Chicago dog toppings inside - and priced as a cheeseburger! Talk about Chicago-love with relish, onion, cucumber, pickle, tomato, sport pepper (for the kick!), celery salt, mustard - and all this in the burger instead of the hot dog! If the burger tastes this good, then I'm sure the Shack-cago dog does too (embarrassingly, I haven't gotten around to it, but this burger is a secret solid favorite!
Honorary Mention: Chick n' Shack is the chicken burger here and the Chick-fil-A guy told me that Shack makes better fried chicken sandwiches. But I am not sure how it compares with other local establishments.
So there you have it - where else can you get these two things? Cheesy-portobello? Chicago dog toppings in the burger? And before you judge me on this, those In-N-Outers judge theirs by saying Animal-style should be mandatory. Well, try the Shack, but also upping the game.
