Shake Shack Debuts Downtown Houston Location Next Week - Eater Houston

"NYC’s Shake Shack will open its fourth Houston outpost next week, bringing the famed Shackburgers and crinkle fries to a fifth area location. The newest Shake Shack will make its debut at 702 Main Street on Saturday, June 29, joining restaurants in Montrose, the Galleria, Rice Village, and Minute Maid Park. Like the rest of the Houston-area Shake Shacks, this location will serve the Lockhart Link Burger, topped with a link of Kreuz Market jalapeno-cheese sausage and concretes made with cookies and pie from Fluff Bake Bar." - Amy McCarthy

I loved my experience! Me and my friends have an air bnb downtown and visited twice and Denise was a great woman to help with our orders! She was super sweet and kind , she deserves a raise and a promotion for her hard work ! Definitely coming back more !

Google
DO NOT EAT HERE!!! Visiting from out of town needed just a quick bite before a wedding. This was literally one of the worst experiences I’ve had eating out. The service was terrible. It took 30 minutes for our food to be done. Then the food was awful. My burger was literally pink on the inside. When I brought it to their attention I was looked at like I was dumb and they tried to say I didn’t order it right and that’s how they cook their burgers. A rare/ almost raw burger? Really?????

Google
First time in Houston, first time trying Shake Shack—and it did not disappoint! As soon as we walked in, a gentleman named Mitchell made me and my friend Natalia feel incredibly welcome. He was super helpful, gave us great recommendations, and even guided us through the menu in case we needed anything extra. His positive energy and genuine conversation made our experience feel more like a sit-down restaurant than fast food. We also had the pleasure of interacting with a sweet and kind team member named Britney (rocking pink glasses!) who added to the great vibe of the place. Overall, it was way better than what I expected from a fast food spot. The service was amazing, and the food was really good too. Definitely left a great first impression!

Google
Coming from California Shake Shack, the food quality here was definitely comparable and delicious! They one reason I couldn't give 5 stars is because there is absolutely no parking available on the front nor side of the business. Both roadways are one ways with no parking spaces so it was hard to do a "quick" in and out for an order pickup.

Google
Highly disappointed! I ordered a chicken sandwich and the chicken was thin and small. This is one of the more expensive burger joints; therefore I expected better. In addition, my table was not clean and I had to pay for parking. Never again.

Google
Food wasn't anything to rave about. The service was excellent. I asked for sweet tea & a young man went above and beyond to get it for me. The same guy gave me the bathroom code. I don't like ordering on the iPad, the iPad was slow. The shake was OK, needed a bit more chocolate taste.

Jordan North

Google
I have to say this, but this restaurant has some very good burgers. From the freshness, seasoning, and the flavor is just great. The service was also good and the wait time is pretty reasonable in itself. The menu options to choose what to eat from is one that I find filled with variety.

Google
Hi Lunch Drop / Customer Service, I wanted to bring to your attention an issue with my recent order. The bag arrived unsealed, and both my fries and burger were cold when I opened it. I found this really disappointing and not up to the standard I expected. I hope this can be addressed so it doesn’t happen again. Thanks for your understanding.

Yelp
This Shake Shack location is hard to find on this app so you'll have to access its page through Google. However, that little inconvenience -- for me, at least -- doesn't diminish the nice late lunch I had here yesterday before the Astros game. I found the place on a whim after I discovered that Finn Hall was closed for the Labor Day holiday. While Shake Shack is apparently well-known for its burgers, its Chicken Bites turned me into an instant fan. Fresh and hot out of the fryer, each bite released a juiciness you can't find in Chicken McNuggets. The buffalo sauce augmented their goodness. I can't forget about the Spicy Cheese Fries, either. They're a solid side to pair with the Chicken Bites. I must mention that both can be eaten with a fork.

Yelp
I really love the burgers and hotdogs here, and it's amazing to find frozen custard in this part of the country. Excellent location with a casual, fast-food ambiance. This is a huge breath of fresh air from the absurd infestation of pretentious dining halls in downtown as of late. Service is good, but again, I reiterate. This is fast food and soft drinks - not full service, table service, or bar service. Being automatically prompted for a tip by the register at a fast food joint infuriates me to the point where I'm taking one star off. The prices here, like everywhere else, have gone up. How about the business pays their employees a living wage instead of guilting customers into contributing to the increasingly ridiculous tipping culture.

Yelp
very convenient option but the burger isn't as good here as other locations imo. busy and messy inside.
google avatar

Huyen C.

Yelp
Ordered to go (as always now due to COVID) two shake shack burgers & cheese fries. The fries come hot, and not soggy! The burgers were great as always. I personally like in and out burger more, and I think the price is much better than Shake Shack. We will get shake shack every once in awhile though and they have quick service! You can't go wrong either since shake shack is a bit closer to us than any in and out burger joint.

Yelp
Like sands through the hourglass, so is the wait for your food. I've always been a fan of shake shack, but the wait is a little painful. For a few burgers and fries we waited north of 30 minutes. I realize one should expect to wait a little longer for fresh food - but when it came out, the fries were cold. It tasted as if the fries were made when I ordered, but they came out with the burgers a half hour later. I returned the fries for new ones - and the new ones were fresh and piping hot. I expected a little better for the price point.

Yelp
This was my first time eating shake shack, can you believe it? lol. I ordered a regular cheeseburger with fries and a lemonade. It was actually really good! The burger was just the right size for lunch for me, the fries were not soggy or fried too hard. The lemonade could have been a tad sweeter but that's just me lol. Their menu has some times I want to try so I'll definitely be ordering from there again soon.

Yelp
I gave this location multiple tries and the service got improved. The food came out on time. The shakes and fries are consistently good. I love to order chicken sandwich, which is good as well.

Yelp
Outside of the fact that I'm a huge fan of their burgers, I recently tested out their Hot Chick'n and why not, tried out one of their Vanilla & Chocolate shakes, malted to boot. Just like their burger the Hot Chck'n was equally a well composed sandwich. The crispy chicken breast is dusted with a guajillo and cayenne pepper blend and topped with slaw and pickles. The bun is a soft potato bun that holds and binds all the items snuggly together. Definitely will have to order again. I normally won't order any sort of shake or malts, but I wanted to try theirs out since they are called 'Shake Shack'. Going through their choices I landed on the Chocolate / Vanilla blend and decided to add the malted option for an incremental amount. I have to say, its been a hot minute since I've had a shake, but this was the best tasting one I've had since I can remember. By no means am I an expert but I know what good taste like and encourage anyone to give their shakes a go and add the malted option, you won't be disappointed. Thank you Shake Shack, you hit the spot.

Yelp
As far as spicy chicken sandwiches go, Shake Shack's offering sits in a slightly below average spot. The sandwich is pretty small, but the taste was alright. It had a nice spice level, but there wasn't much flavor to the spice. The coleslaw and pickles were also a solid ok; they offered some nice crunch but lacked taste. The service at this location was straightforward. They have little iPads that they encourage you to order at and then you just pick up your order at the shelving unit next to the register. They ask for your phone number, and theoretically you should get texted when your order is ready. We never got a text when ours was ready, so check back sooner than you think. IMO though, Popeyes's and Chick fil A still have better fast food chicken sandwiches.

Yelp
Missed it the last time was in San Fran. Was going for the 5 starred Filipino fusion cuisine but not open, SS was second choice. Wow. This is much better than I expected. Organic, healthy, and hormone free. This appears to be tastier than In-N-Out burgers. The dbl smoke shack shake disappeared very quickly. Someone wolfed it down before I realize it was me eating a "gourmet" burger. Lochart Burger, only available in Texas, vanished before I can even take a picture. Pretty good. The Shroom burger, for a veggie burger, was very satisfying. Chicken bites were also delicious. Will repeat.

Yelp
Went at 5 pm on a Saturday. The staff is super friendly. You can order at the kiosks next the entrance if you are paying via mobile or chip card. Super easy. The Shackburger is so good & is one of my favorites. It's a simple cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, and ShackSauce. Don't forget to add Fries to your order! They're crinkle cut, crispy, and not greasy. Topped it all off with their Handmade Vanilla Frozen Custard... I need a nap. This is one happy belly.

Yelp
First time at Shake Shack. I'd been curious about this place after driging past it every day, and finally decided to take the plunge. 5 stars for the ordering system. I loved the touch screens and order customization. It was refreshing and I can only hope more restaurants get on board with this. 4 stars for the food. The burger and fries were pretty good, and the Oreo shake was decent. I like my Oreo shakes with chunks of Oreo, and this one was too finely blended. Overall, a pretty good experience. I'd return.

Yelp
Located in the heart of downtown in a prime corner location. Unfortunately, the food and service bringing the rating down is a shame. Firstly in terms of service, our waitress and manager got the food order incorrectly and once the manager came to get the order correct, the order was actually wrong a second time. The service was less like Costco and more like Sam's club. They do respect COVID with table spacing. I wish they had outdoor seating like Flying saucer across the street but I guess space is obviously limited. The burgers were pretty greasy and fries were crinkle cut; similar to school fries. Honestly for a $10-$13 meal, you would expect a better and bigger burger and homemade fries. It's fast food that's charged for upscale fast food prices. I think the hype is a little bigger than the experience!

Yelp
Living so close and the world's biggest fan of krinkle cut fries, I finally found a hack to get them WELL DONE. The last 3 times I crossed the street to grab a burger(yes, I am only 600 feet away) I ordered my fries separately and asked for no-salt fries, well done... PERFECTION! They are now in 5-star territory. Very friendly employees, and fresh food. AWESOME!

Yelp
Ordered 2 burgers 1 fry. Got 1 burger 1 fry didn't realize til I got home. Called and they confirmed they forgot to put in the bag had it sitting there. Went back to get my burger they gave me the same burger that was sitting for 30 mins. They didn't even say sorry for making me drive back 20 mins

Yelp
Ok.....I have been wanting to come to Shake Shack for a good while now and finally came. And can I SAY!! LEAH (cashier) gave amazing customer service. I work in a Restaurant myself and this girls people skills are great. From taking our order, asking how we wanted it, even letting me taste the lemonade before I ordered it....I would personally hire this girl! She should be recognized. -Ariadna

Yoginkumar P.

Yelp
Food was very good. I ordered Chicken Shack. But it was very small sandwich for the money I paid. They were out of Pom-Basil Lemonade which was disappointing. The location was half empty, I guess most people just Oder takeout.

Yelp
Why pay $50 for two to dine at a burger place when you can get fed across the street at seemingly fancier joint? Because when the burger patties taste so authentically real, so good that the teeth can tell the difference from other Frankenstein burger patties. Well, it helps to intentionally not read the corporate promotional literature and just let my tastebuds give the verdict just how good is Shake Shack compared to In-N-Out (Californians' favorite privately-held non-franchised burger joints, and Cannibal Cafe (Vancouver's premier single-location grass-fed burger joint). Shake Shack's Double Smoke Shack and Lockhart Link Burger (a Texas exclusive) features juicy beef patties that has just the right balance of bite and softness. There is no aftertaste and no msg that I typically could detect in other burger joints. The Lockhart Link was $2 more expensive than the Double Smoke- and I ordered it as lettuce wrapped so the whole bunless burger felt super small and expensive. If you are only going to have one burger, stick with the Double Smoke. The chicken nuggets and the portobello mushroom in the 'Shroom Birger showcase delicate deep fried food unbothered by cheap oil or thick batter. The dessert "pie oh my" and chocolate milkshakes were decent but nothing special to write home about. The milkshake at least was not as over-sweet as McDonald's - thanks to not using high-fructose corn syrup. If paying with tap or Apple Pay you must order using the self-serve kiosk. Overall a pleasant health and clean food-oriented burger experience to have once in a while.

Brad B.

Yelp
Lady at the counter was extremely helpful and friendly. Glad this place was open downtown at night when many places aren't. Conference food was getting old and wanted a good burger and fries - this fit the bill.

Yelp
If you are looking for less pricey eats downtown, come check out the Shake Shack. I was lucky enough to attend a Soft Opening this evening. Got to choose 3 items: 2 hot items & 1 cold item. You order from a kiosk and can even customize your order... enter your name and phone and they text you when your order is ready. I selected the Longhorn Burger... no cheese (love the combo of burger and sausage, 10 pcs Chicken Bites (very crispy) and Large Fifty-Fifty (otherwise know as Arnold Palmer to some people). My drink didn't taste like much... I think it was watered down by melted ice. I went back and got a lemonade... very refreshing. Service was very friendly. Once they work out the kinks... it will be awesome. During busy times it might be good to have 2 people working the counter handling order pickup and customer counter requests. Parking... um it's downtown... so parking can be pricey but bonus Redline Metro Rail runs right in front.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Shake shack. It's overall a good burger joint. There was kiosks for customers to put in their own order. Such a perfect way to practice social distancing! I technically had their new spicy chicken sandwich, but that's equivalent to a burger for me. It was spicier than I expected, which I love. The French fries were basic, but good with sauce. I also tried their Oreo shake. It taste more like chocolate than anything. I'm not a big fan of chocolate so I wasn't able to finish it. Other than getting my order wrong the first time, the employees were nice and helpful. The drink area is closed off to employees only, which is definitely something new. It was an overall good experience. I will be back if I happen to be in the area.

Jurate K.

Yelp
Don't you ever dare to ask me to look at my phone without my consent! Or forcefully hold my order because I do not show you my phone. It's illegal and violates my constitutional rights. One more time and I will look for a good lawyer. Pick the fire you play with!

Yelp
So excited to join the line and see what it's all about finally. Never paid much attention previously because the line seemed silly, that was until it was being built below my office, but the wait was worth it! The smell outside on the street is intoxicating as the smell of burgers wafts around. Inside looks a lot like the rest of the Shake Shacks I've walked past, but I read they've used recycled materials through out which is awesome to see! Burger was great, as were my fries. Can't wait to indulge my inner fat kid next time and max out with a shake too!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Very open view. Shakes were a little thick but it didn't take away from anything. Customer service was really good :)
google avatar

Amanda Q.

Yelp
I discovered Shake Shack while living in NYC, so I was super excited to find we had them here and this location is relatively close to the hospital I work at. We've ordered delivery four times now, and three of them were messed up, and always in a different way. Ask for extra sauce on the side, get none, missing items, wrong items, you name it I think it's happened. The food is great, but it's not cheap and it's very disappointing when you're excited about your lunch and then it's wrong or your item didn't come. After this last time, we decided we won't be ordering from here again.

Yelp
Nirvana is the rudest person ever. I just feel like if I planned on returning I probably wouldn't if Nirvana was going to take my order. She was very uninterested and short. My friend began to place her order and the lady walked away as she began to talk... her personality is not front of the house material.
google avatar

Captain S.

Yelp
I haven't had shake shack since New York. I must say it was absolutely delicious as I remembered. I had the double shake shack burger with the cheese crinkle cut fries. The meat was juicy and bun was soft and the burger was wrapped up nice and neat and like a nice present to opened up. Everything was proportioned perfectly. I didn't receive an ugly sloppy burger off like "other" local chain. This is by far the burger joint/chain in Houston or on Earth lol.

erika a.

Yelp
Shake Shack is one of the best places for shakes! The fries are amazing and something definitely easy to snack on. The food speaks for itself and all I can add on is AMAZING!
google avatar

Jayden T.

Yelp
My buddy and I were starving and decided to grab a burger and a shake, we ended up waiting over 25 minutes for our meals only to find out they've just been sitting in kitchen with nobody attending to them. Keep in mind the place was practically empty and we waited by the counter as the staff essentially ignored us. When we got our food they didn't even hand us a straw.

Sterling H.

Yelp
Slow as the fuk, how the cook cooking in sunglasses and a fake ass gucci mask with his nose still out.... Consentraing on the wrong damn thing .. Took over 10 minutes for one stupid ass burger. NEVER AGAIN!!!!! USLESS AS MANAGER WAITS UNTIL THE LOBBY STORMING WITH PPL AND STILL NO FUKING HELP!!! Then u get this sorry ass shit!!
google avatar

Llana A.

Yelp
You have to place your order on an iPad... Really? Someone can't help me place my order, so I don't have to touch the iPad? Apart from that I really enjoyed my visit to Shake Shack. It is like a better McDonald's. The location was nearby my hotel and since the service was fast and the restaurant was clean I tried it out twice during my visit to Houston.

Mark J.

Yelp
Ordered hot dog and fries. Fries were sitting in the kitchen window when I came in. When dog finally was delivered, it was barely warm. Asked at counter if dogs were pre cooked or cooked from scratch. They said they were not pre cooked. Counter staff reacted like "so". Told her "I guess this place is not a place to come to twice". They were not at all busy. My advice: go somewhere else. Would give less than one star if possible. Will never go to shake shack again. This one or any other. Awful. Worst McDonald's I've been to was better.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
Not crowded on a Saturday night! I was very happy with the convenience of the kiosks, and how promptly the food was ready. My only disappointment with this location was the fries were room temperature and seemed like they weren't fresh. Nonetheless, my chicken could not taste fresher!
google avatar

Maya C.

Yelp
I ordered my dinner online while I was walking to the restaurant. I had a short wait before I got the text letting me know my order was ready. Friendly staff. Clean restaurant. Good location. Order a burger no bun, fries, a coffee fair shake and a Topo Chico. All good. Will definitely be back for lunch with my team.
google avatar

Poornima A.

Yelp
We like Shake shack because the burgers are just the right size. I do not care for the shroom burger - too oily. Tried the new korean style fried chicken here and it was ok. We also like the chicken bites here. I love the way they have the order pickup window - perfect for social distancing!
google avatar

Anantha K.

Yelp
Original shack burger, was really good. Service a little bit off. Would give it 4 and half easy. Give it a try fosure !
google avatar

Fran W.

Yelp
The cashier was absolutely wonderful. My order was placed promptly and delivered promptly. It is lunchtime on Christmas Eve so there was no line at all. My disappointment is with the hot dog. The wiener could not be cut with the fork. It was so rubbery, I had to pick it up and bite it. It saddens me to say this was the worse hot dog I have ever had. Needless to say, I only had one bite. This place is only a block away from my office. I'd like to give it another try.

The Mena H.

Yelp
The burgers taste good, just small for the price you pay. Staff is super nice and place is clean. Not crowded, menu is organized.
google avatar

Evelyn R.

Yelp
Had Shake Shack for the first time a couple days ago. Honestly, I'm not sure what the hype is all about. The burger was good and seasoned but there wasn't anything spectacular about it to say it was one of the best burgers I've had. I will say the chocolate milkshake was really good and if I ever get food from Shake Shack again it would be for the milkshake and the chicken bites because my kiddo liked them.
google avatar

Yelp
Story time about the worst service ever!! I walked in with my friend at around 8:50pm (they close at 9) and we were ordering on the tablet. My friend receives a phone call, so he steps out to take it. Meanwhile, I try ordering a shake. This worker tells me: "We're out of vanilla and oreo shakes" Me: "Ok i'll just get strawberry." Worker: "No we're out of all shakes, that's what I'm trying to tell you." Me: "You just said you're only out of vanilla and oreo" Worker: "Nah, the vanilla is in all the shakes so that means we're completely out" Me (thinking): "Well why didnt you just say that in the first place.." More on this later... I walk out to tell my friend that they're out of shakes. At 8:57pm, we try to come back in but the worker locks the door and refuses to let us back in. We tried explaining everything, but he still refused. At least 6 or 7 other people tried to go in, but the worker still refused to let anyone in. Some guy just wanted to refill his water, and he still refused. He says they're trying to close everything down (not sure how refilling your water affects that, especially when there's 4 to 5 people sitting inside eating). Luckily, we had two other friends that were still inside. We call them so they can order for us. They get their food. They eat inside until 9:15pm without getting kicked out. They ordered a chocolate shake. They got a chocolate shake when they were "out of all shakes". This worker had no idea what he was talking about. He made stuff up as he went. Completely ridiculous and rude to customers and we should not be treated like that. Would rate 0/5 stars if I could. Might consider changing if this worker was re-trained not to be a jerk.

Georgia H.

Yelp
This was found in my friend's food. Disgusting. And the manger acted like it was no big deal.
google avatar

Zoe H.

Yelp
I come here for lunch sometimes and it can get pretty packed during lunch hours. With that said, it still isn't too hard to find seating. The chicken sandwich was mediocre; it's tender but not too crispy and falls apart easily. The shack burger is great though service is good as well!
google avatar

Donna M.

Yelp
Love having this Shake Shack nearby and Downtown. I feel like they are still trying to iron out a few issues that happen with new businesses, but it's okay for the most part. The one thing that's annoying is when I order from Door Dash, it's not coming from this one Downtown location...it's coming from the one a few miles away in the Montrose. We need to be able to order from this Downtown location for those of us who live Downtown. Please make it so!
google avatar

Lucas A.

Yelp
I know what you are thinking, how can a burger be "soul food"? I do not mean this in the traditional sense. I just remember taking one bite of a cheeseburger, and it touched my very soul. This sounds outlandish, and you may be right, but it is the best burger I have had. If you are in downtown, try it!
google avatar

Reuben P.

Yelp
Burgers are great. Chicken sandwich is in the running as THE BEST among chicken sandwiches (Popeyes and Chick Fil A). Fries could be fresh all the time. Sometimes they are made and just sitting under the heat lamp.

Hailey W.

Yelp
I have to go down to 3 stars only because the person who made my experience enjoyable is no longer there :(. Bubbles was the reason I kept coming up there. My kids love her I love her and my husband who is very picky and hard to please even loves her and that never happened considering we been married for 30 years. It sucks i wish i knew where she was now. Restaurant still great. Some of the worker are okay. But that Bubbles was the icing in the cake. Now my babies dont even want to go back. They even made this picture for her. Well they come and they go

Yelp
After a Sunday afternoon at Discovery Green, I felt like stopping for an ice cream. Shake Shack is right by my parking garage and I had never tried it. I ordered a custard with "mix ins" at the tablet kiosk. It wasn't clear how to choose the "mix ins" but the picture looked more appetizing than the plain custard. After ordering, I noticed there seemed to be a lot of chaos and frustration coming from the kitchen and some hovering customers at the front who had obviously been kept waiting. It took 10 minutes from the time I received the text confirming my order until the time I got the text saying it was ready. I went to the front and gave the cashier my name (as entered at the kiosk). She appeared confused and asked the guy in charge of the desserts, who responded he would make my order. So apparently it wasn't really ready? After about 2 more minutes, he got me the custard with no spoon. By that time my toddler had had it, and I seriously doubted their ability to competently locate a spoon, so I grabbed a straw and left. There weren't even any so-called "mix ins" in my custard. But the custard was above average, hence the second star. God forbid the staff at this location have to serve the big law attorneys next door during the weekday lunch rush, but maybe they simply use the B team on the weekends.

Leon F.

Yelp
Next time I pay $21 to have a simple bacon cheeseburger and fries delivered to my wife's job I would appreciate if the food was hot. Being you guys a located two blocks over from her job.

Shelbi H.

Yelp
Horrible customer service! Picked up my order and when I said thank you, no one responded! Will not be going back!

Philip M.

Yelp
Finally shake shack comes to downtown besides Minute Maid Park. Love this location! Lots of space and food is always great and quickly prepared.
