"Bay Area residents who crave Shake Shack’s smash-style burgers, crinkle-cut fries, and chicken sandwiches will get a new place where they can quell that desire this weekend, as the fast food chain will open its third local location. As of 11 a.m. on Sunday, December 15, Shake Shack’s third spot will start serving diners in San Mateo’s Hillsdale Shopping Center, a company spokesperson tells Eater SF." - Eve Batey

Shake Shack's self-order kiosks promise convenience but deliver frustration as the service logistics falter. Despite placing a straightforward order, the wait extends over 30 minutes, with numerous disgruntled patrons echoing similar grievances. The absence of order status updates compounds the issue, leaving customers in limbo. While the food quality may be commendable, the abysmal service overshadows any culinary merits. A recommendation for management: prioritize operational efficiency and communication, possibly by implementing ETA notifications, to salvage the dining experience.

Google
You order on a tablet and then wait for your food to be brought to you. Minimal interaction with staff. I was disappointed that this “shake” shack had only a choc shake as an option to order on the device. Burgers and fries had good flavor.

Google
The best food with the worst dining experience. The kiosks and soda machine are always broken. Last time we were there I had to get up literally three times because they forgot several items in our order. This place is like the airport...every time you go it's different, and nobody seems to know what they're doing. It's too bad because I really like the food, but not enough to put up with the chaos at this particular location.

Google
The food and drinks were impeccable! I liked how the line moved quickly and how clean the restaurant was. The cashier, Devon, who took our order was incredibly friendly, professional, and efficient. I was with my family so we took some time to order, but Devon was patient and kind. He brought out ourr in-Shack order to us and checked in on how things were going, which was so nice! He elevated Shake Shack experience and was the main reason why I would recommend this Shake Shack to my friends and family. I believe he deserves a pay raise for the hard work that he does.

Google
I purchased two burgers, one fry, and a lemonade. I paid $35. I felt the food is overvalued considering I can get more for less at higher quality restaurants. I had to put my own order into the kiosk. I was asked to tip which I felt was inappropriate given nobody interacted with me. I had to bus my own table. The food quality is not what I remember it being when I first tried shake shack years ago. Overall I would consider my experience disappointing. I am unlikely to return given I have had better experiences at other restaurants.

Pro tips: Get cheese sauce with your fries. Enjoy the free soda refills. The burgers look small, but they are very filling. Don't get more than one. The only thing good about this place are the fries. Upgrade to the cheese fries any chance you get and enjoy them while it is hot and gooey. The staff is slightly unenthusiastic. The mushroom burger was quite good, but dry. The buns should have been steamed before being toasted and the burger could use more sauce. If it wasn't for the fries I would not come back to Shake Shack.

Google
Delicious burgers and fries. I ordered the cheeseburger with the stuffed mushrooms. It's so good. I tried the pomegranate lemonade 😋. Can't go wrong eating here. The workers are nice and keep the restaurant clean.

Located in Hillsdale Mall. Loved the chicken bites, they where hot and tasty. Chicken burger was cold, didn't like that, rest it was good. Bacon inside was also hard to chew some bites. But not much a problem. Ample parking space and seating space. They had kiosk for ordering which was great

Yelp
Chicken Bites! Perfect taste after gym ;) I love your Lemonade. #FitnessYear #ShakeShake

Yelp
Shake shack is basically the same anywhere... a 3-star experience with consistent, fatty and delicious food. This location beats the average by having lots of seating, easy ordering, super friendly staff and a nice outdoor courtyard for sunny days. Order ahead for the best experience.

Yelp
Hate to say it, but the staffing here is consistently bad. The folks running the front act like the customer at the front doesn't exist. When I come up to the counter, not only do they not acknowledge me, but they actively try to ignore me when I pick up the order. I shouldn't have to work so hard to get their attention to confirm my order on the counter. For the price I'm paying I'd expect a better experience. I'd rather go to In N Out. The burger may not be as good, but the overall experience is so much better. Staff is always helpful and happy to take care of your needs. The people at this particular shake shack are a major turn off. That's coming from someone who used to have their job in highschool and junior college.

Yelp
Shake shack is one of my guilty pleasures. I love their burgers. When I visited today, I ordered the shack burger. Their burger meat is always juicy and well seasoned. And their cheese that they add on their burger just hits different if you know what I mean. I also ordered the cheese fries which was also pretty tasty. The food itself is very comforting. This location is usually pretty busy as it is within the hillsdale shopping center so don't be surprised if you are waiting quite a bit for your order. Today when I visited it wasn't very busy so I was hoping that the food would come out quicker but it still took a bit of a wait. To order they have four kiosks in the front where you can self order.

Taylor O.

Yelp
This Shake Shack is located at Hillsdale on their outside terrace by the main indoor dining area. They had a lot of indoor and outdoor seating here, which was also pretty filled up with patrons. Most Shake Shacks, including this one, have self-order kiosks where you will place your order and pay without interacting with a cashier. The problem was that one of their four kiosks were broken and the other three seemed to be very slow. There was a growing line of people waiting to order and I think that they should have had someone work as cashier to help out since the kiosks were holding everything up. I only ordered a non-dairy chocolate shake. I do like their shakes a lot here. It took a bit longer than I expected to come out, and when they called my order, they gave me the wrong shake. Luckily it was no trouble for them to fix it and get me the correct order. Overall this place is decent for fast food but definitely more pricey. This specific location can get very busy and cramped so expect that it might take a while to order and get your food or find seating, especially if you're going at a busy time on the weekend.

Yelp
I hadn't been to shake shack in a while but I was at the mall and needed a bite, so burger was an easy choice. I got the smoke stack, because I love the peppers. The potato pun was soft and pillowy. The meat was good but small, I should've gotten a double. I also got a side of cheese fries, and not sure how it's possible but the cheese was kinda clumpy and cold. I still ate them, but it was definitely not the warmest which made it kinda mid. The fries themselves are ok, definitely prefer them over the other popular burger chain. For a burger and fries, it came out to $15 before tip. And I was still hungry. Definitely don't feel like the value is there for what it is. Whenever I'm in Vegas, the shake shack there hits way different. Dunno what's up with the Bay locations but the quality isn't on the same level. Dining room could use some TLC as well. I'm never mad at eating shake shack, but it's not somewhere I'm going out of my way for.

Yelp
"Top-Notch Burger Experience at Shake Shack Hillsdale" I recently visited Shake Shack Hillsdale, located on the outer edge of Hillsdale Shopping Center, just across from the Apple Store. As a burger enthusiast, this place has quickly become my favorite. The Mushroom with Cheese burger stands out, offering an unparalleled level of deliciousness. What sets this Shake Shack apart is not just the exceptional food but also the user-friendly ordering process. The self-service option, facilitated by touchscreens, simplifies the ordering experience. You can select your items, pay, and input your assigned number, allowing the staff to serve your food promptly. It's worth noting that during busy times, they might call your name for pickup, so stay attentive. I've had the pleasure of dining here twice, and the customer service has consistently been excellent. No issues encountered so far. The overall ambiance adds to the positive experience, making it a go-to spot for burger cravings. If you're a fan of burger joints, Shake Shack Hillsdale should be at the top of your list. I'll undoubtedly be returning whenever I find myself in the area - I just can't get enough of this place. Highly recommended! (Sorry I select 1 star by accident)

Yelp
Went for Lunch Food - 5/5. The beef patties are rich and full of umami, despite their thinness. I ordered a double so that flavor was multiplied by two and the addition of bacon made for an even stronger meat flavor. The cherry peppers helped to cut down the fat and give vibrancy with their spice. Buns were toasted well and just dense enough to hold everything together and provide a much needed neutral flavor in every bite. Fries were crispy but the flavors were a little too heavy, even for french fries. The spicy fries didn't actually improve much as it just tasted heavy with spicy flakes. It really could've used some sour, acidic flavors in the form of a sauce. Service - 4/5. Most service is self from ordering to getting your drinks. I love that it is another signature sign of shake shack that their water always comes out ice cold. Really helps when eating heavy burgers and fries. Value - 5/5. One thing that always surprises me with shake shack is that their burgers look to be on the smaller side but you feel so stuffed when you finish one. Most burgers and sandwiches are in the upper single digits price range for singles and lower 10s for doubles. Fries are between $4 to $7, depending on your toppings. Always a solid choice for burgers at a reasonable price! Parking - Mall Garage (Free)

Yelp
We went on a weekday around 7 pm, and it was surprisingly empty. We ordered a double and a single cheeseburger, along with regular fries. Flavor-wise, we preferred the single-patty cheeseburger because the ratio of ingredients to meat is better. I was disappointed that the fries were cold. I was hoping since there weren't too many customers, we'd have a better experience. This may come off as nitpicky, but the ketchup packets were extremely sticky. I remember why I don't frequent Shake Shack--it's because the burgers are too greasy for my liking. I prefer backyard-style burgers with fresh ingredients; however, Shake Shack feels more like a guilty pleasure. It's also way too expensive for the portions. Due to these reasons, I probably won't be coming back unless I'm craving something super greasy.

Yelp
This is the first time I've been to SS and for the life of me, can't figure out what the fuss is all about. The food was nothing amazing and nothing special. Burgers are tiny and good luck looking for toppings in them. I doubt I will go back to any SS establishment if there are other burger joints nearby.

Sylver C.

Yelp
Guest kiosk is quick and easy to use, to go packaging is great love this place great lettuce wrap

Anita L.

Yelp
Solid place for a fast food burger spot. We came here for lunch on a holiday weekday and the place was packed. We were able to find a free booth right away though. You place your order at one of the 4 kiosks they have by the entrance, or directly with the cashier. You receive a number and someone will bring your food to you when it's ready. The burger isn't the best I've had but it was decent. Also got some of their chicken nuggets and fries for the kids. The fries were well-cooked, chicken was a little rubbery.

Yelp
This location is in the outside area of the Hillsdale mall, and is extremely convenient to reach. Parking is no problem, and there is a nice choice of shops to browse in the surrounding area. The one item that I have had a consistently good experience with is the Avocado Bacon Chicken burger. I usually add tomato, and it is absolutely delicioius, moist, and crunchy from the sauce and components. Highly recommend this if it's your first time here! Seating inside is plentiful, sometimes they are too full but there's also an outside seating area that is well protected from the elements. My only complaint is that the price point is on the higher side for the food content that you are getting, especially since you have to order sides individually and there are no combo deals. A pretty simple basic meal for 2 with a side and a drink can run you up into sit-down restaurant prices, which is a questionable deal since you can literally go sit down at a burger place just around the corner. I think this place is really good if you have a specific craving for something on the menu, as it's pretty convenient to just swing by and grab a quick bite while spending some time at the mall.

Helena L.

Yelp
Solid Shake Shack spot. Preferred ordering is at the machines but if you prefer to pay at the register just stand near there, and someone comes by to help out. Service has always been great for me. Staff helps families out by cleaning and reorganizing the outside tables if needed. My favorite spots are outside on a nice day. Food-wise everything is as expected from Shake Shack. Classic go-to shack burger was great and the fries for the most part were all crispy. Chicken nuggets taste like real pieces of chicken. Quite busy on weekends but not impossible to find seats. Got my food relatively quick and easy through getting a text on my phone.

R S.

Yelp
My first ever experience at Shake Shack after years of senseless deliberation. Whenever I have a junk food craving, I typically default to Five Guys but wanted to try here. The double burger was very tasty and cheesy and the meat was well seasoned with a noticeable grill flavor. Condiments were minimal. The bun was very soft and I believe buttered. Fries were pretty basic. Overall I enjoyed it but can't say it's one of the best burgers I've had. With tax the meal was $21 which is definitely on the pricier side. Ordering is via a self-serve kiosk and a friendly staff member brought the food to my table about 10 minutes later.

Yelp
I liked Shake Shack when I first had it on the West Coast (in Las Vegas) and it was pretty damn good. This experience was not so good. First off, this was on a Friday night around 7:30. That being said, I get that it may be busy. But the place was DIRTY. Management should recognize that the place looks bad. And they should shift their focus from getting orders out to cleaning up the place. This was my bad. This should have been the waring sign for me to eat elsewhere. Makes you wonder that if the front of the house looks bad with garbage cans overflowing, tables and floors dirty, condiment stations and napkins ransacked....what does the back of the house look like?!?!? Can't really comment on the quality of the food. The surroundings kinda ruined it for me.

Dennis W.

Yelp
Honestly and sincerely the quality of the burgers you receive at each Shake Shack location can vary widely. For instance, when I visited New York City a few years ago, I thought their Smoke Shack burger was amazing, specifically the patty and how it all the ingredients blended together. Coming to their Hillsdale mall location a few weeks ago, I essentially duplicated my order from my NYC trip and I walked away feeling empty and still hungry to boot. As analytical as I can be, I point to the beef patty as the culprit between the discrepancy. It's typically a madhouse here, especially on the weekends. I suggest you order via their app and expect to wait quite a while before you venture over to pick up your order. With this type of food, it's also would be to your benefit to devour your petit burger and fries as quickly as you pick up your order, as the ingredients have a tendency to meld together over time.

Yelp
Wth shake shack, we went at 7:00 on a sunday night and i get that it gets busy but it seemed like the place was robbed, there was no fries , no avocado and no sparkling water. We payed 60 dollars on 3 burgers ( VERY SMALL) and a grilled cheese , price was wild but do you know what was more wild? a grilled cheese with one side sourdough and one side hamburger bunThey could have told us but nah. It was kinda clean but very loud and ik that's not Shake Shacks fault. Overall not good

Yelp
Shake shack used to be great a couple years ago, and despite quality going downhill my kids insist on coming here every weekend. My husband and I oblige , and usually order burgers for ourselves to reduce waiting for food at different eateries. I used to love this place to the point where I'd order not one but TWO burgers for myself --- bc I just couldn't decide! But these days I'm always underwhelmed by how little care goes into the food here. Examples include a single wilted lettuce piece that barely covers half the burger patty, and burgers "assembled" such that the patty is not even on its bun. Maybe the novelty has worn off for me. I don't feel the same way with In And Out, where 9/10 times I'm very happy with the burger execution (lots of veggies, extra toasted bun, etc). Today at Shake Shack, however, I noticed one of our kids' cheeseburgers was undercooked. Looking it up, it seems Shake shack cooks their burgers to medium so I guess this is expected however this is the first time we felt uncomfortable about the cook temp. We brought it back home and cooked it a bit more.

Jenna R.

Yelp
I remember my first shake shack experience, I had to fly to NYC to try it. Now it's here in my city. This quick service restaurant really focuses on consistency and quality of their food. You can order ahead on their app or you walk in and order via kiosk. These are smash burgers. Flavorful and satisfying. My usual is the shack burger or I like to switch it up and get the seasonal burger or avocado bacon burger. If you are a first time I do recommend the shack stack. Fries are always good. Their shakes are really good! Their seasonal flavors are good too. Can't go wrong with a creamsicle float. This location is usually pretty clean with indoor and outdoor seating. Or you can even bring it to the food court. Don't forget to clean up after yourself!

Teresa N.

Yelp
SS is known for its classic ShackBurger, which is a popular menu item and what I get 90% of the time. Once in a while they have limited time offered items such as white truffle burger, and recently they are offering for some limited-time Korean inspired items. So far I only tried the Spicy Korean BBQ fries, it's sprinkled with kimchi seasoning and came with a side of Korean BBQ sauce. I don't know what the sauce was but it was really addictive, got a very Korean flavor in it. Love the limited time items, never get bored with Shake Shack!

Mike D.

Yelp
I get there at 8:48, I get to the machine at 8:50 and try to order my food but the machines close at 8:50 but the store doesn't close till 9:00. The employees tell us that they shut the machines 10 minutes before closing. What kind of bullshit is that? They did not even offer to take our order over the counter. Why advertise that you close at 9 but stop ordering at 8:50. Screw this place. Update: generic response. Asked me if I have a receipt when clearly in the review it states that the order was never placed.

Mandi F.

Yelp
I've now been here a bunch of times and overall my experience has more "meh" than good. Overall: Lack of consistency in the food and the service. I know this is fast food, so I assume having a set protocol in standards for the food and process in a chain is common, but it really varies. For food: Inconsistencies seems to vary depending on who's boxing the food up. Fries range from barely cooked to overcooked. Cheese sauce ranges from barely any to "do you want any fries with that cheese?". Containers for sauces range from tiny to huge as well. I don't recommend getting any of their beverages because of how messy it is to get your orders - read below on Service. By the time you can get through the crowd, get your order, the ice has melted in your drink to water it down or the milkshake has melted and it's just a creamy liquid. For service: My main gripe is the pick up area. It's just a mess. No lines, no order. Just hangry patrons crowding the counter trying to get the attention of the kid in charge of distributing the food. Maybe they need to get the manager or another person to help at peak times. Also, the estimated time for pickup is never accurate. I know they get busy and it's just an estimation, but it's so wildly inconsistent. I always show up 5 minutes earlier than the estimation time and sometimes it's already been sitting out already getting cold. Sometimes it's another 15 minutes after the estimated time window. Maybe they need to widen the time slot, especially during peak hours?

Spleaf P.

Yelp
Double Shack burger with "condiments" apparently. Just got home to sit down and eat when I opened the burger to check and make sure that there's onion, lettuce and tomato inside, and this is what I find! This is almost a joke as much as it is embarrassing and somewhat insulting. For a 11$ burger I expect there to be at least a little more coverage on the burger itself. This is just sad, last time I'll be going LOL. I hope a manager or supervisor sees this, from a customer standpoint and someone who HAS worked in the food industry this is unacceptable on every level. Thanks for reading.

Karen r.

Yelp
Why haven't I reviewed this place before?? It's so good! Love their burgers, their crispy chicken sandwich is amazing, and their fries are CRINKLE CUT (my fave) and definitely get the bacon cheese version. Don't even get me started on the milkshakes. Cookies and cream, you are my downfall!!

Jenny T.

Yelp
I came here for my Valentines Day meal -- so romantic, rightttt? We used the kiosks to order and I prayed to the technology gods that their text messaging would work properly. I watched the empty counter like a hawk to see when our order was up. Viola! Text message worked and the server gave us our meal piping hot! I love their burgers and fries. My fav fav, especially when it comes out quickly and hot! Get the double patty burger. You will not regret it.

Daisymarie G.

Yelp
Ordered on line once and the food was cold when I went to pickup- the time I ate in, I had a chicken sandwich and it was delicious- eh

Adele W.

Yelp
Shake Shake is alright. It's not bad, but it's definitely overhyped. The burgers was quite flavorful. The fries were good, I tend to be picky about my fries. But they were just crispy enough. The Hot Ones- Chicken burger was perfectly spicey. The burger is relatively small, compared to other fast food burger places that I've been too. It's definitely still affordable, but it's expensive for the size of the burger. The service was not bad. There was a line to order on a tablet; there were 4 tablets available. Upon ordering, I received a text confirmation that said I'd get another text when my order was ready. So i went to get a table. 20 minutes had passed and the text never came. I then found out that a worker was calling my name. However, it was hard to hear since it was noisy, and I was expecting a text, not my name to be called. Oh. And they have good tasting water .

Alvin W.

Yelp
I've heard about shake shack for many many years now, and finally got around to giving it a spin! The burgers were definitely delicious. However, they were on the smaller side. Here's what we ordered: - Apple Cider Donut Shake: My absolute favorite part of the meal. Way too sweet, but I love anything that tastes remotely ice-cream-like. I honestly couldn't taste much cider or donut, but just as the description said, the texture was definitely a creamy, mixed "ice cream". This is a fantastic shake...but probably only a semi-annual treat. I can't wait to have another one. - Chicken Shack Burger: Big juicy fried chicken slab with avocado. Honestly, this was a pretty good burger; for $8, I expected a bigger burger though. Chowed down in probably 8 bites. Lots of bacon slices and plenty of avocado however, so whoever assembled the burger tried their best to stuff as much as they could. - Bourbon Bacon Cheddar Burger: Also a fairly delicious burger. A bit too salty, but the patty was delicious and the sauce was perfect. I'm no burger aficionado, but having had burgers growing up all the time (e.g., In N out), this was quite competitive. - Spicy Cheese Fries: This cheese was awesome. As far as I could tell, it was decent quality nacho cheese that stayed melted. I strongly preferred the chili powder over the bacon topping, would recommend the same to others! Unfortunately, one burger was not enough to fill me up -- despite this being in between meals, at ~4p. I was still hungry afterwards, so I left pretty disappointed. Granted, it's in a bougie location (Hillsdale mall, so probably costly rent) and it's post-pandemic amid inflation, so I can see why portion sizes are smaller. However, I'd rather spend a little bit more (~$10-12) and leave full and content. In short, not filling, but definitely tasty!

Linda P.

Yelp
First time at Shake Shack . Ordered two hamburgers, one single. 1 double--$7.99 and $10.99. Very helpful and friendly staff. Food was tastier than expected. Given the price, we had expected a larger piece of lettuce and a larger piece of sliced tomato than what we got. Dining area standard. We will go back

Lita B.

Yelp
The last time I had their burgers was many moons ago in NY. I thought it was great, better than In and Out. Last week we stumbled upon this in San Mateo. We ordered the regular cheeseburger, fries, and cheese and bacon fries. They were okay, not spectacular like I had it in NY. Up there with Habit and Five Guys. Would I return? Sure.

Steffan A.

Yelp
I don't think this meal was worth $15. The hot dog was like $5 alone and for some reason I thought it was going to come with a bunch of toppings. Maybe I was thinking of the Shack-cago Dog? I could've bought a similar hot dog from Costco for a fraction of the price. That's my mistake for assuming I guess The chicken sandwich was ok, a little smaller than I expected. Garlic sauce was great! I wish I got some on the side to put on the hot dog bun. The bar for chicken sandwiches is set by Popeyes for me (much bigger and I think a little cheaper), so I'd equate this to maybe like a Chick-Fil-A chicken sando. The burgers here are great! Probably won't order the chicken sandwich or hot dog again tho

Angelica G.

Yelp
I have had shake shack before but this time we ordered for take out and I decided to try their 'shroom burger: the description reads Crisp-fried portobello mushroom filled with melted muenster and cheddar cheeses, topped with lettuce, tomato, and ShackSauce on a toasted potato bun. I added pickles to mine. Got a side of truffle fries to share which had a truffle aioli dipping sauce and it was very strong. A little goes a long way. The burger itself was ok. Crunchy coating on a "meaty patty", and it was different. If you like truffle fries, you should get it.

Kathleen W.

Yelp
My partner has been talking about Shake Shack all weekend so we finally made our way through. He ordered the Chicken Bites and SmokeShack. The food came out quickly and the food is fresh and steaming hot. The bacon in the burger was a nice added touch to the rest of the combination, however, it felt like a small appetizer. Shake shack is fast food however, it would be ideal to be mostly satiated at the minimum.

Christina N.

Yelp
Meh. Golden state double burger - this was represented on the menu as a $12 double burger. On the ordering kiosk, it was named double burger, but when you add it to cart, the default is a single burger for almost $10. Whatttttt??? We didn't realize this until we got our order and there's less things in that $10 single patty burger than their regular shack burger. This makes no sense. The burger wasn't even good, and for that price point, I could get way more food at in and out. Shack burger - this was fine. I ordered shack sauce on the side and they forgot. Chicken bites - check your order! We ordered the 6pcs bites and there were only 5 pcs of chicken in our order -.- seriously?? Each bite was so heavily breaded there was barely any chicken. I'd pass on this. Tiramisu shake - this was good, but I wish they filled the cup to the brim instead of 80% of the way. Overall, food was not great, plenty of mistakes and forgotten items on our order, also a hefty price tag for fast food. MEH!

Roni L.

Yelp
I tried to order a soda with my meal from the kiosk and they're not there. One worker said it had to be unlocked, so I waited and waited and nothing. Wtf shake shack? This isn't the first location that was like this... I guess they want you to pay for more expensive beverages?

Debby N.

Yelp
I've been here twice ever and probably not going to come back anytime soon. The food is average greasy fast food and I still leave hungry :( I ordered a single shack burger which was about $6~$7. Now I know the burger portion is a little small for me (and my pregnant self lol) so I made sure to order fries... but it still wasn't enough! The other bothersome thing is that it takes FOREVER and a half to get your food! We ordered on the kiosk and waited at least 30 mins for our three burgers and one tray of fries. So I was super hungry and ordered another order of chicken bites and fries. Little did I know it would take another 20 mins for that order to be fulfilled! When I took a bite of the chicken bites, all the breading fell off immediately. Taste was fine but if only the breading stuck! I did enjoy the soft bun on the burger. The fries are crispy but waiting 30 mins for food is a little crazy to me especially after 2pm! I don't recommend unless you are willing to wait.

Michael C.

Yelp
I think I'm done with the Shake Shack experiment! It's so expensive! Simply doesn't present any value for me... the burgers are just OK. Nothing spectacular or unique about them. They are tiny compared to other fast casual restaurants. The disappointments: ~ Bacon Cheese Fries - 2/5 Meh. Just fries with bits of Bacon and what looks like Nacho Cheese. Skip it... ~ Bourbon Bacon Cheddar Burger - 3/5 The pics look amazing and the Burger itself sounds interesting. Yikes was it disappointing. Nothing stands out about it...just a burger. ~ Golden State Double - 3/5 Once again...just tastes like a mediocre Burger...a tiny expensive mediocre burger. An expensive disappointment that did not satisfy my Burger cravings... Personally gonna stick with In-N-Out.

Yelp
Management: took forever to order one burger, fries, and chicken bites. Approx 20 min. I see staff waiting around for the food to finish cooking and customers kept asking is "is my order ready". It is not a fast food restaurant. Took forever.

Yelp
Don't order the hot dogs... Now, I know what you're thinking: "Who would go to shake shack and get a hot dog?" I was craving a vienna beef dog, and Shake Shack is the only place nearby that serves them. Big mistake. I was hungry, so I ordered two of them. The first one was chewy. Real vienna beef dogs are supposed to have a "snap" to them when you bite in. This one was really tough to chew - not at all the consistency you're looking for in any type of hot dog. I checked the other one, and was dismayed to find the bun had mold spots on it. So if you're wondering whether you should try a hot dog from Shake Shack, the answer is a resounding "No."

Yelp
I really love shake shack. This location has plenty of parking and there's indoor and outdoor seating. There's self ordering kiosks. The wait can be quite long but super worth it. I got the regular shack burger and my bf got the golden one. Their fries are super good too, can't go wrong with cheese or bacon cheese.

Yelp
Beau and I were on a little afternoon shopping trip one weekday and we were really looking forward to eating a nice bougie well put together burger. He suggested Shake Shack since we were in the area. I went with it knowing people hold it in such high regard with the likes of In N Out and other 'fresh per order' fast food burger. I decided to go simple and ordered the shack burger, some crinkle-cut fries, and Beau did the same. I haven't eaten this since 2017 in New York and before they opened this as a chain over on the west coast. So it was basically a completely new experience. Here are my thoughts and takeaways The patty in the burger was amazingly delicious. Filled with lots of juice and super flavorful. Everything you could want from a patty. However, the portion was really small for a $6 burger, it felt more like a slider. I got the truffle burger. It was amazing. There's no lettuce no tomato, no fuss with extra juices. They used some kind of egg bun which tasted yummy to go with the patty. It was a very clean burger to eat and I finished feeling satisfied and not overly stuffed. Beau and I noticed there weren't excess sauce or toppings which I appreciated. The crinkly fries were solid and crispy, the box was a bit small but not too bad. I think the portion it was half the size and about the same price at In N Out. The fries here are a lot better and definitely an upgrade compared In N Out's. I always say you get what you pay for. But it's definitely giving you the bougie feel of fries and burger meal. The patty was a whole lot better than the ones at In N Out, but In N Out gives about the same portion but at a lower price with more lettuce and tomatoes. Overall, everything was really tasty but the price was high and I wish the portions were bigger. Beau and I would definitely come back for a solid pre-workout meal because of it's clean flavor, lean meat and no mess fast food. We just wish the portion were slightly bigger and more generous with the fries!

Yelp
Poor service. No fountain sodas. Attempted to order beer but it needed verification but it was so impossible to get help with it I had to cancel the order. Tried to get water instead but how is it almost $4?! Staff refuses to acknowledge or even make eye contact with customers. Food arrived with no napkins, no ketchup. Just the bare minimum. Why did I bother coming when habit and in-n-out treat customers better

Yelp
The Asian girl staff there was so rude! With no greetings nor respectful words at all! I thought she's had a bad day at first, but then I found her smiled, greeted the white customers while we being Asians very interesting! We ordered the burgers and chicken bites, chicken was okay, burgers were very average, meat in there was too dry. Twos stars instead of one were for the shakes, they were good! I really regretted that I tiped up front! However, as being in the mall, I would still recommend the shakes for just stop by grab and go.

Yelp
I've been to this location a couple of times and I appreciate that it is not as busy as the Palo Alto location. However, I feel like the food can be inconsistent, whether it's the temperature, texture, or taste. The husband and I usually order via online and pick-up in person. We've had this challenge with other Shake Shack locations in which the food is not ready by the allotted pick up time. Strangely, when we do get our food, it will often be cold. All in all, a fan of Shake Shack but not sure if I'll be returning to this particular location due to the inconsistencies.

Yelp
I like this location better than the Valley Fair location. Ordering on their kiosk is pretty easy. You can press the customize button to add things like pickles, lettuce and tomatoes. There is a nice waiting area where you're not standing too close to people eating indoors or those who are in line to place an order. There is a narrow "bar/counter" that you can stand next to or lean on (to fiddle with your mobile phone) while you wait for your order. Restrooms inside the restaurant are convenient for washing your hands after eating your burger & fries. They're located near the entrance. Just walk through the main entrance and hang a right (past the ordering kiosks). You can't miss it. There's a self-serve soda station. And to the right of this, there is a stack of small paper cups and a water dispenser; no need to bother the people at the counter for a cup of water. *** Strawberry Shake The strawberry shake was cold and thick. They didn't make it on the spot. It was pre-made. I saw they just grabbed a cup from their fridge unit behind the counter. *** Crinkle Cut Fries These crinkle cut fries weren't as crisp as I would like. You'd think they'd be more crispy for something with more exposed surface area. The inside of the fries were a bit under done. However, I liked how they salted the fries. It was just right. *** Avocado Bacon Burger This cheeseburger with avocado and bacon was good. There's plenty of seating indoors at this location. And there's also seating outdoors on their covered patio. This isn't my first choice for a burger in this area, however, I will find myself here again if the kiddo wants to eat here.

Yelp
The fact that I'm writing about yet another Shake Shack is probably both unsurprising and mildly pointless. The former because my love for them is pretty well documented already (this would be my...fifth Shake Shack that I've reviewed/praised?); the latter because I'm pretty sure, at this point, most people are familiar with who they are/what they have to offer. And yet, here I am, because how could I resist? If it helps any, at least this is the first one I've reviewed here in California! Which now means I need to think of another excuse when it comes time to review my second one... In light of the fact that the vast majority of the menu is mostly the same as any other location's, I'll refrain from the usual details on what Shake Shack has to offer (a lot of burgers and shakes - I couldn't help myself!). However, one item that they had listed that I'd never seen before was a "Golden State Double" burger that they had photos of posted on their walls. Presumably, it's something new and/or specific to this location/the Bay Area, and it looked pretty interesting, but I didn't see it listed in their kiosk's menu for me to order. Not that I necessarily had a problem getting "stuck" with my reliably delicious SHACK STACK. As with every Shack Stack that I've had before, this one was just as solid. The fried, cheese-stuffed mushroom, the patty, the bun - everything just worked so well together. To this day, I still regret that it took my third Shake Shack experience to finally try this thing for myself! My one minor quibble was that, compared to the others, the mushroom in this one wasn't as crispy nor cheesy. That said, the former might be because I didn't dive into it immediately and the latter might just be a luck of the draw issue. Regardless, it's not like any of this would deter me from ordering this again in the future - love is love! Now, despite how familiar and reliably good the food was, I have to admit that my trip here wasn't quite as amazing as the other visits I've made. Not sure if it's a sign that Shake Shack is becoming TOO familiar/starting to lose its luster or if it's because everything just seems better when you're travelling (I know I'm definitely happier...), but I will say that the rebuild/additions to this end of Hillsdale are pretty impressive. Gone is their generic, stereotypical mall food court, replaced by a far more modern one (it looks like an airport terminal), as well as an outdoor area where the likes of Shake Shack calls home. Pretty underrated to be able to either dine in or snag one of the tables sprinkled around the water fountain, especially during COVID! All in all, FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded down - I'll most definitely be back!

Yelp
I remember waiting in a huge line for a satisfying burger in NYC. We were happy to see Shake Shack near the Apple Store at Hillsdale. So on a quiet Monday night, with no basketball, baseball or football games my husband had to see on TV, we drove to Hillsdale just to eat at Shake Shack. Ordering is efficient on the touch screens. The food was good, but not memorable. The burger was cooked well done, so it wasn't greasy and had good texture. The fries and shake were also good, but not great. In the future, I would not go out of my way to eat at Shake Shack, but it's a quick meal if at the mall.

Yelp
Came to this location for the second time a couple weeks ago and I have to say, I'd forgotten how good Shake Shack burgers were. Something about a griddle fried crispy burger is just so good! Ordering at Shake Shack is pretty easy, it's all by touch screen (at least I think it is only by touchscreen; We ordered in a large group and one of us was paying for the whole thing so ordering by touchscreen was definitely preferred even if we could have ordered with the person at the counter.) Touchscreen ordering makes it much easier to customize orders and we had a lot of customization. There were a number of holiday shakes and custards which multiple members of our group tried. The nice thing about the Hillsdale Mall location is that they have adequate indoor and outdoor seating and the outdoor seating is covered which is good if there is rain or even just as protection from some of the wind. Overall, I like Shake Shack generally and I like this location in particular more than other Bay Area locations due to the better seating.

Yelp
I used to love this place, even preferred it over In N Out. I had a very disappointing experience yesterday for late lunch. Food took really long to be ready (even though the place was not busy). We got the text that order was ready and still had to wait about 5 mins for the food. First staff was not available to hand over food order then when someone did show up he didn't acknowledge me or any one else also waiting for their order. I had to call out to him several times and had to point at my own order because he didn't even ask what I needed. Once I sat down to eat I realized we had no straws, the wrong drink order and there were no napkins available for any guests. We could also see other patrons upset and losing patience. To be completely frank, it felt like this management wasn't there and the staff did not care about the job or the guests. In addition trash was overflowing, no napkins (we had to ask),soft drink station was not working, fries were not as usual (soft and yummy) but instead overcooked and dry. It is terrible because we really liked this place, and now we are now considering not going back after this experience.
