The fact that I'm writing about yet another Shake Shack is probably both unsurprising and mildly pointless. The former because my love for them is pretty well documented already (this would be my...fifth Shake Shack that I've reviewed/praised?); the latter because I'm pretty sure, at this point, most people are familiar with who they are/what they have to offer. And yet, here I am, because how could I resist? If it helps any, at least this is the first one I've reviewed here in California! Which now means I need to think of another excuse when it comes time to review my second one...
In light of the fact that the vast majority of the menu is mostly the same as any other location's, I'll refrain from the usual details on what Shake Shack has to offer (a lot of burgers and shakes - I couldn't help myself!). However, one item that they had listed that I'd never seen before was a "Golden State Double" burger that they had photos of posted on their walls. Presumably, it's something new and/or specific to this location/the Bay Area, and it looked pretty interesting, but I didn't see it listed in their kiosk's menu for me to order. Not that I necessarily had a problem getting "stuck" with my reliably delicious SHACK STACK.
As with every Shack Stack that I've had before, this one was just as solid. The fried, cheese-stuffed mushroom, the patty, the bun - everything just worked so well together. To this day, I still regret that it took my third Shake Shack experience to finally try this thing for myself! My one minor quibble was that, compared to the others, the mushroom in this one wasn't as crispy nor cheesy. That said, the former might be because I didn't dive into it immediately and the latter might just be a luck of the draw issue. Regardless, it's not like any of this would deter me from ordering this again in the future - love is love!
Now, despite how familiar and reliably good the food was, I have to admit that my trip here wasn't quite as amazing as the other visits I've made. Not sure if it's a sign that Shake Shack is becoming TOO familiar/starting to lose its luster or if it's because everything just seems better when you're travelling (I know I'm definitely happier...), but I will say that the rebuild/additions to this end of Hillsdale are pretty impressive. Gone is their generic, stereotypical mall food court, replaced by a far more modern one (it looks like an airport terminal), as well as an outdoor area where the likes of Shake Shack calls home. Pretty underrated to be able to either dine in or snag one of the tables sprinkled around the water fountain, especially during COVID!
All in all, FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded down - I'll most definitely be back!
