NYC’s Biggest Restaurant Closings of 2018 | Eater NY

"After 45 years in Rego Park (opened in 1974), this diner closed in November because it could not sustain the landlord’s new asking rent amid slowing business as diners fell out of favor; co-owner Demi Karayiannis noted the neighborhood had changed, original customers aged or moved away, and different people had come, illustrating the larger trend of diners struggling in 2018." - Stefanie Tuder

Shalimar Diner in Queens Has Closed After 45 Years | Eater NY

"After 45 years in Rego Park, the diner at 63-68 Austin St. closed this past weekend when owners could not reach a lease agreement; co-owner Demi Karayiannis said the restaurant, opened in 1974, would not have been able to sustain the new asking rent amid slowing business. Karayiannis noted that the neighborhood has changed as the original customers got older, moved to Florida, or passed away and different people have come. While not a standout restaurant—the menu offered typical diner dishes such as breakfast plates, wraps, and burgers—it served as a longtime neighborhood stronghold and even made a brief appearance in the film The Wolf of Wall Street." - Stefanie Tuder

Google
Chicken tikka masala? More like chicken tikka mashaAllah 😂 Okay sorry It was very good and I’ve never had Indian or Pakistani cuisine so I’d definitely need to try more dishes from different places before I can speak on this. The men working there were helpful when we had questions about the menu. He provided good recommendations! 👍 Yay! Yum 😋 Spicy (I’m white so this doesn’t really help anyone because everything is spicy to me)

Google
Visited this authentic Pakistani restaurant in Sacramento and had a great experience. We ordered Chicken Biryani, Goat Biryani, Shahi Paneer, Naan, and Tandoori Chicken Boti Kebab everything was absolutely delicious. The food quality and quantity were impressive, and the flavors really reminded us of back home. Prices are reasonable, and the service was good. Highly recommended for anyone craving authentic, homestyle Pakistani food.

Low V.

Google
Good food and price! Spice is not too much, perfect to enjoy! Combo Tandoori Chicken plate in picture is only $13. One of my favorite spots.

Mihail S.

Google
Chorus, everybody! Guys I came to this restaurant by chance, the food is fantastic, I recommend it to everyone. It's really good.

HH

Google
Good food, but they can be a bit faster

Babar M.

Google
Prices were reasonable. We ordered Achari Gosht and Palak Paneer. In my opinion the Achari Gosht was ok while palak would have more flavor. Maybe they have to cook it little more. In sweet, kheir was ok as well. If they give little more time to cook the kheir, taste will be improved. Kabab taste was reasonable. Taste of pakora was acceptable but some of them were slightly raw. On our complaint they did not charge for it which is good customer service. Out of everything their Naan were the best. I suggest to cut 1-2 oz. of dough to make Naans more lighter and in return you will save some money.

Mosheem K.

Google
I would say this- the food and the prices are excellent. But the service for dining in Will make me never come back. Why would I dine at a place knowing that the servers are impolite? There are dozens of other desi options to dine in at in South Sac. We were a party of 5, but were only given 3 menus. Okay? When the server brought the dishes out, we asked him to identify which dishes they were since two of them looked similar. Well, all he said was "chicken". Okay- there were two different chicken dishes that we ordered. But nope, no help at all. Then the two platters that we ordered, they came in two to-go containers. But we were dining in. I know for some Pakistani, they think this is the norm. But it should not be the norm and it's not okay.

Desi S.

Google
Love the fish pakoras and the Khameeri roti.. but they always give alot of spicy sauce. I dont like spice

Yelp
I've been here a few times so when one of my Paki friends said let's meet here for lunch, it was a yes for me. Our go to dish is the goat karahi, absolutely delicious. Cooked hard to the brink of over done but not, just right. Pairs with the naan, it's a winner! If you're in South Sac and want to try authentic Pakistani food, get them a go... their hospitality and food will win you over

Yelp
Came here to enjoy a nice dinner out. This place had the cutest vibe staff is friendly and welcoming! Had the chili chicken that was pack with flavor spice and lots of chicken. I was fully and happy by the end with lefts overs for the next day. A definite must try

Casey D.

Yelp
Underrated spot for Indian food. For our tab, it came out to around $19 per person. This was a perfect amount of food of us and it was so fulfilling. My group and I are pretty basic, so we just order butter chicken, tikka masala, basmati rice, and garlic naan. I enjoy eating the tikka masala more for the spice factor, it was absolutely delicious and flavorful. I am not a big fan of the chunky chicken pieces, but it's not that big of a deal (just preference). The naan is crispy and slightly charred, perfect amount of garlic. I would definitely come back here again. I'd note that they charge for drinks and water for those expecting to be served water. Bring your own water or support the business by purchasing!

Kheloud I.

Yelp
Excellent food. We ordered some beef kebabs and chicken kababs to go as we were in a rush. When we arrived, they were super busy so we had to wait an extra 10 minutes past pick up time. We received our order went home. Meats were fresh and delicious. Cooked to perfection. Will definitely come back again to order and eat at home.

Rabi J.

Yelp
Honestly their customer service zero . Seems like they had a fight in the kitchen, cursing yelling, which is not OK does not look professional. Come to the food part one of the worst food ever for the money that they're charging they don't give lots of food no flavor overall save your time in your money.
google avatar

Ashiana K.

Yelp
If you want to be treated with DISRESPECT and no manners then Shalimar is the place for you. I gave them an extra star because the beef nihari was delicious and they're lucky they have a chef who knows what they're doing in the kitchen. The restaurant itself is like you walked up to a mafia boss establishment with tinted windows and terrible signage. Walked in, don't get greeted, told to sit anywhere, gave us 3 menus when there's 5 of us. Plates, napkins, and silverware were handed at the end of the table. We order our food and slowly, the dishes come out and basically thrown on the table with ZERO indication of what dish was just placed on the table. I asked what this is, the guy replies "Chicken". I ordered two chicken dishes, would have been nice to know which one. Then another order comes in a to-go box. Sets it down and says "Boti". I'm supposed to know which platter when we ordered 2 different ones? and if we're dining in the restaurant, why are the platter dishes being served in to-go trays? As we wait for each dish to arrive, I notice our server constantly scratching his head and goes into the kitchen. Is he washing his hands before touching the dishes? I extremely doubt it. Customer service doesn't exist. Etiquette doesn't exist. There's tons of halal options in Sacramento, this place doesn't deserve my money or business if they choose to treat their customers this way. This type of behavior should not be made into the norm for these halal indian/pakistani restaurants. Be nice and you'll be blessed with customers and tips. Plenty of other options in the area.

Yelp
hands down my favorite place for south asian food in all of sac!!! They have quick service and plenty of seating as well. I always love staring w the fish pakora because they are so good.
google avatar

Iqbal Samina K.

Yelp
The only good restaurant always serve fresh and tasty food love there fish fry Daal karahi chili chicken biryani Palou and naan are the best so fluffy and soft good and fast friendly service always recommend them

Aryan P.

Yelp
Very bad service and these guys are charging more for the food and the quality of food is very bad yesterday me and my friend ordered a palak paneer and gosht kharahi which were not tasty and seems to be like unhealthy and cheap

F S.

Yelp
We had a large gathering today at this restaurant. It turned out to be really nice. The staff were very professional. The karahis may be the best in town. Their tandoori chicken boti and naans are top notch and may be the best you can get as well. Will definitely repeat!!! The place is also clean and very inviting.
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
First time here. Food was good. Service is friendly. Love the butter chicken and garlic naan bread. There's plenty of seating. There's a back room with more seating.

Raheel K.

Yelp
Amazing experience. Employees are nice and food is delicious. We especially like the chole batura, fish platter, and vegetable biryani. There' plenty of seating as well. I highly recommend shalimar grill.

Jasmine F.

Yelp
Love this place! I'm from Fremont so I usually go to the shalimar in Fremont but since I've tried the one in Elk Grove it's become my favorite restaurant! Their food is so flavorful and one of the best restaurants I've been to. Definitely a must try

L T.

Yelp
0 stars. Absolutely disgusting service, extremely rude. Drove over an hour to be greeted with a dirty look to get a table of 6 on eid. The female hostess told us 40 minute wait time we decided to split the group 4 and 2 into two separate tables to be seated immediately. After that she said "food is going to take too long" basically telling us that they don't want to serve us and the food will take too long to cook?? We got frustrated and the lady began to yell and said "why are you abusing me" in front of the entire restaurant. Honestly I had second hand embarrassment for her. Never in my entire life in America have I had an experience like this. If you can't handle working in food service don't do it. Also maybe take an anger management class.

naz k.

Yelp
Very unprofessional front desk clerks, very rude, we visited for eid dinner 6 people, two table of 4 seating g each was available, asked to put it together, they declined very rudely, than agreed to set separate, the young girl says our food will take longer, very cheap service, we all walked out from this disgusting place with unprofessional service.

Hannah T.

Yelp
We came to enjoy our food on Eid but it was very busy, we were six people and they had two tables available but they were only four chair tables, so we asked if we can add two chairs on one of the tables and they refused, so then we said we'll just sit at separate tables 3 each, and then the lady replies with "the food will be a long wait though" basically meaning that she didn't want us to stay cuz they were busy. I don't remember her name but she was rude. Was very disappointed because we came here often.

Yelp
Great halal food option in Elk Grove. We tried Tandoori boti kabab, goat biryani. Everything tasted great

Virginia C.

Yelp
The food is prepared in advance and stored in freezer and served after heating in microwave. I do not recommend this restaurant as the food was horrible and oily.
google avatar

Mariam S.

Yelp
I always come here, they have such an amazing customer service as well as tasty food. I highly recommend this place to everyone. they will not disappoint!
google avatar

Chugher X.

Yelp
Overall good food. Good fried fish, malai boti and beef seekh kabab. Nihari is not good
google avatar

Asghar K.

Yelp
Shalimar Grill has the best fried tandoori fish. I've had anywhere! It's so flavorful and juicy. Additionally, their goat, curry and chicken cry are very authentic and well-made. Their services is always on point. No matter how big the group size is.

Justicia B.

Yelp
The food here is very delicious, i recommend getting the fried fish pieces and the samosa chaat it's nice inside but a lot of music

Daljit G.

Yelp
Worse place ever for customer service. No one pays attention or check on you. They had young folks who have no idea how to treat people but has a lot attitude. Food is ok and they charge for water. Food is ok. I will not be coming back at all until or referring this place to anyone.
google avatar

Crystal H.

Yelp
Food here is delicious! But the wait for the food is ridiculous. I've been to the Fremont location and loved that place. Our friend ordered to-go food over the phone and was told food will be ready in 45 mins. When we arrived, we still had to wait another 15 mins. Very slow service. Only indoor dining available. The goat curry is to die for! We got medium and it was spicy. Beef curry and chicken biryani were also good. I didn't get to try the tandoori chicken but I'm not that into chicken dishes. The cilantro dip was spicy and refreshing. Naan was fluffy and chewy.

Rodijah A.

Yelp
I bought chicken curry 2 weeks ago and it was sooo delicious. Their food is so tasty. I will continue to eat here.
google avatar

Sunny I.

Yelp
Foods is tasty , customer service is alright not much conversation with servers. Ambience is okay .
google avatar

Mohammad Ali A.

Yelp
The food is always great here . They have some of the best fish pakora in the area, whenever I come with the family , it is a must that we order it. For dinner we decided to order a goat karahi , daal gosht, and chicken tikka boti kabob. Everything was flavored beautifully, the chicken tikka kabob had that smokey, charcoal flavor to it while still remaining juicy and tender . Naan and roti (whole wheat bread) were baked properly and used as the perfect utensils to eat our salan (curry) with. We had a cup of chai afterwards to wash everything down, and the flavor of that was immaculate. Service was prompt , and the owner is very kind, he makes you feel invited and welcome .
google avatar

Ami F.

Yelp
The is horrible. Taste bad and made me throw up all night. Don't order anything from this place.
google avatar

Laila A.

Yelp
Authentic quality food for reasonable price and they are open for dine in and take out. Located off Stockton Blvd in South Sac (across the street from Boiling Crab). Has its own parking lot and restaurant is a decent size to accommodate large parties. Decor is blah & they use paper plates for dine-in customers, which is pretty tacky but we will let it pass this time. Food was excellent- we tried the Vegetable Pakora, Chana Masala, Garden Salad, Raita, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Tikka Leg, Naan (3), Plain Rice & for dessert we had Gulab Jamun. All dishes were cooked with the perfect amount of spices, fresh ingredients and we enjoyed every dish. It's a fairly new restaurant, make sure you pay them a visit if u haven't already. you will leave happy and full.

Yelp
Shalimar Grill Elk Grove Review Went with my family tonight ordered karahi gosh, paneer, chicken wraps, fish/rice combo. Fiest of all, the service was absolutely terrible. After the young kid who took our order never once came back to ask if everything was okay or if we needed anything else. The fish my kids ordered was dry and tasteless. My karai gosh had a foul smell like it's last weeks left overs. The bendi was a mush and seemed like they just threw some onions and random masala over it. Their restroom was clean but took a side peak to their kitchen kitty corner to the restroom and it looked very dirty. I think it's customary nowadays and I don't think most desi restaurants care if their kitchen and pots and pans are clean. I will never eat at this place again. A dam shame too after a few people said good things about this place. AVOID THIS PLACE!
google avatar

Roger B.

Yelp
Overpriced and small portions. Tried three times dinning and each time the service was way too slow. Ambience what Ambience, Hole in wall location.

Cheryl J.

Yelp
Everytime I order here the food is super overpriced for very little food. My brothers ordered and they charged them 123 dollars for 4 trays of food . When I ordered the same they charged me 500 dollars for the food ! Thats crazy (mind you I'm in hijab and my brothers look white ) so im not sure if hes just prejudice or trying to rip off certain people ? Also I want to say everytime i order from here he gets called out to do the orders and literally starts punching in any numbers and claiming thats how much it is . Im gona post a picture of how much food i got for 6 people today and i was charged 40 dollars
google avatar

Zee K.

Yelp
Shalimar Grill food is better than Shalimar Restaurant. Chicken Shish Kabob feels like eating rubber band needs improvement. Chicken leg is delicious and green chutney definitely makes taste it better.
google avatar

T C.

Yelp
Butter chicken was delicious. Chicken Buriyani was so tasty. First time I tried chicken Achaar I also liked it. Garlic naan was soft and buttery. Food came out fast. We also got free sodas. I will for sure be back to try other dishes!

Rock M.

Yelp
Good food always in all locations same taste ,service good too - chicken tikka masala and bbq leg my favorite
google avatar

Shaneel R.

Yelp
Parents asked me to make Biryani and I was not feeling like cooking so I decided to give this place a try as I had seen it passing by a few weeks ago. Ordered and came to pick up 25 minutes later. Gentleman that helped me was welcoming. Prices are excellent and food was delicious! Seasoned just right and a good amount per serving also . Biryani is enough for 2. Chutney was fresh and once again they gave many with the order . Will try there soup next time.
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
2 stars automatically for being halal and in the Sacramento area. Food was cold though. You could term it was out of the fridge. Chicken dishes were better than the gosht.
google avatar

Billy A.

Yelp
I wish I took photos of all of the amazing food. Everything is fresh and delicious. They are running around taking care of their in house and phone orders. The vibe is simply calm and relaxing. Authentic and very tasty. Spiced right, what else can I say. Nothing was disappointing. Thank you to our great waitress and phenomenal cook(s).
google avatar

Mahrukh M.

Yelp
Well, where do I begin? My brother is apparently a huge fan of this newly opened restaurant and requested me to come and try it when I actually wanted to go to the kabob and chutney. So I came around 3:45-50ish pm. The place was pretty quiet and it also has a buffet option. It was little odd that they don't serve water in glasses instead they give you water bottles. Well we went ahead and ordered our food. Food: 1) fish pakora: I would rate fish pakoras 5/5 since they were the best tasting food. When it came out, it looked fresh and tasted delicious. 2) chicken biryani: 4/5 my brother ordered chicken biryani. This dish was also good. 3) kebab roll wrap: 0/5! This food is not what it looks or is describe on the menu. It costs $6.99 and i basically felt like they ripped me off. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED. Look at the pictures below for clear representation. BUT, it's just a plain naan with on single kebab and bunch of veggies without any sauce. In the menu, the naan looked thin and moistured (looked like a paratha in the menu) but in reality it was just plain, dry naan. You will just feel like you are eating naan with lettuce and That's it. At one point I got annoyed and just took the Kebob out and I was disappointed yet again. The kebob was just bland. DO NOT waste your money on this specific item. It's not how it is portrayed in the menu. Very unprofessional. 4) shahi paneer and naan with butter: 0/5! My mom ordered this food. So we got naan first thing at our table and it didn't have any butter on it when we requested it. The naan was hot and crispy so we let that go. However, they didn't bring us shahi paneer. Well we waited and then when we told them, they said that it wasn't in the order apparently. They brought us shahi paneer when we were done with our food. It came around 4:35-40ish pm. Well when it came, our naans were completely cold and we definitely didn't enjoy our food. Now lets talk about customer service: 0/5, might as well just go to the buffet and get food. The customer service was not good at all. High unprofessional. When I asked for a plastic bag to put our food in, the employee put the plastic bag on my plate... I came to this place with a high expectation and left this place pretty disappointed, especially because of the kebob roll and shahi paneer. They really need to work up their customer service and put food on the menu that will actually taste like how it's describe. Please don't fool customers. Our total bill was around $51 ish and I definitely think we wasted our money and the food was not worth the money.
google avatar

Emillie C.

Yelp
The Biryani and Butter Chicken was delish! Very tasty and fresh, along with super soft chicken that falls off the bone! Stop by if your craving Pakistani/Indian foods!
google avatar

Roman K.

Yelp
Tried their goat karrai 3 times. Awesome taste. Beware that it's too spicy, to an extent that not a lot of people will be able to consume it. Lol. Giving them 4 stars instead of 5 just because they need to focus on their customer's request. I asked them while order to keep it less spicy but it was very very spicy. And the same thing happened on the subsequent order as well.
google avatar

Ishac O.

Yelp
The Eatery is clean, the service is hospitable and the food is delicious. This is my go to place for my craving of chan masala, tikka masala, kabobs, and cubed chicken
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
Butter chicken was very yummy cholay bhature are always good garlic naan is excellent chili chicken was ok not bad. Fish pakora was good too will try other items next time.

Fam N.

Yelp
Food is great. Got to go with the chicken Tikka masala. 5 star dish. It's a bit spicy so I usually request them to lower the spice level. Besides the food, Not sure why the owner always parks his SUV and takes up two parking spots? Also, being that they serve halal food, I want them to focus on creating a halal environment. They often play desi music on the TV that shows semi nude images. Not appropriate at all. As for the service, it'll take time so every you give them a call in advance.

Fawzia H.

Yelp
I don't feel welcome here. The owner is racist against Afghans. He greets other customers but not once did he greet my family and I. He has an attitude and walks like Salmon Khan. His employee gaghan is also rude just like him. The food is good but service is 0 out of 10. He needs some good customer service skills and needs to treat everyone the same. The reason the owner parks in the middle of two parking spots is so no one park next to his car and damages it. His car is made from gold. I wouldn't even give him 1 star if I didn't have to because personally he doesn't deserve it.

Jimmy S.

Yelp
Food is fresh and delicious, chai is the best there is, ambience is very tranquil and the servers, wait staff are patient and friendly. Would highly recommend.
google avatar

Isa S.

Shamil A.

Yelp
The food was really good and I really loved it a lot plus their service is so nice I mean every time they comes to our table and asks how's the food which I like about that plus when i always ask for soda or water then they don't charge and it's for free I will like come there again to have some delicious food again

Amina C.

Yelp
Food is okay; not the best but not too bad either; just in the middle of u are hungry and this is the closest have had better desi food
