Seattle’s Restaurant and Bar Closures, 2024 - Eater Seattle

"In 2022, Hamid Majdi, a Moroccan immigrant who worked as wine director for Il Bistro, opened a fine-dining restaurant called Shama in Pike Place Market that was an ode to the food of his homeland. But less than two years after opening, Shama has closed, Hamid announced on Facebook on December 4. In its place is a new Portuguese-influenced cocktail bar and restaurant called the Lonely Siren." - Meg van Huygen

The 28 Best Restaurants & Bars At Pike Place Market - Seattle - The Infatuation

"If you’re planning a last-minute dinner Downtown, you might have difficulty finding something that isn't a hotel restaurant or The Capital Grille. Shama seems to always have availability though, and this is a good thing, because it should be one of your first choices in the area. The second-floor Moroccan spot works well for a big family meal or a kind-of-healthy tagine feast, especially if you like eating in a greenhouse that’s as tall as the surrounding trees. Make the baked fish your priority—it has a brittle sear, a flaky interior, and sauce made from briny olives and burst cherry tomatoes that tastes even better spooned on cinnamony semolina couscous. Start with some mezze, like labneh with mint oil and nigella seeds, or phyllo-wrapped basteela with a floral orange honey sauce, and add on another tagine or two like chicken in a rich saffron broth or braised lamb with prunes and sesame for something more substantial. Came here for a birthday lunch. I've walked past this place plenty of times and never stopped in. We were late for our reservations but it was not created to be an issue by staff. We were seated and because we sat exposed to the sun the waiter offered multiple times if we'd like to move but we were ohkay. The staff was attentive and the food was auh-mazing! Nice size portions too! The grape salad was ordered for the table. The braised lamb wrap was tasty and the chicken kabobs were just as good. So why the 4 stars?! You could only sit on the patio for lunch 🥴 it was hot and there were no ceiling fans. And the house side salad was bland. But I'll recommend this place and will try it again!

Enjoyed this place! I believe this is the best Moroccan food you can find in Seattle. Friendly service, savory food, wonderful and cozy atmosphere. Located in the heart of Pike place market. They took over Red Cedar and Sage restaurant. Shama opened about 8 months ago. I do recommend this place. Check them out if you are in the area.

Omg SO good! Amazing food, amazing service, beautiful views and atmosphere. I adore Moroccan food and I was beyond happy to see Basteella on the menu. I usually only get to have Basteella when my mom makes it. Shama is a beautiful addition to the Seattle dining scene. We can’t wait to come back.

This is now a favorite restaurant of mine. Went with my wife for an anniversary dinner and the experience was spectacular from start to finish. The decor is beautiful (love the blue walls), the staff is impeccable (the owner/sommelier gave us table side service and our server, Jessica was attentive and warm!), and the food was delicious. We both had amazing, fall-of-the-bone lamb for dinner, but the real star was the chicken pie we had for an appetizer. I love the flavors of Morocco- the light sweetness and cinnamon on top of the savory dishes is a new favorite. The suggested wine pairings were 10/10.

Hamid Majdi has created an oasis in the heart of Seattle. Tucked into our world-famous Market, you’ll find this refreshing North African gem. At once modern, cozy, and open, the windows and decor get you out of the PNW grey and into the warm mystique that is Morocco. I’m mostly vegetarian, so nearly (and joyfully) filled-up on the wide array of veggie-friendly apps. The za’atar sprinkled across the olives in the lebneh is so tasty. My mouth waters as I write this. Our arugula salad was dotted with delicious nuts and dried fruits. The hummus was a show-stopper. Smooth, silky, and drizzled with Moroccan olive oil, then topped with a phenomenal array of warm, tasty mushrooms, this takes your ordinary garbanzo dish and makes it extraordinary. Both my dining partner and I raved about this one. That’s my favorite thing; taking the simple and making it exciting. My couscous tagine had just the right amount of cinnamon, and my companion said of his fish, “There were moments of brilliance.” We asked Hamid for help with wine, and he immediately found the perfect, crisp Columbia Valley Albariño for my friend, and probably the best Pinot Noir I’ve ever had out of the Willamette Valley. I love wine, I especially love Spanish grapes and our local vineyards, but I always need suggestions for the right pairings. For this, we came to precisely the right place. Stunning. I was super excited about the cocktails too. I had the lemoncello nod to Bogey in Casablanca, and my friend, the Old Fashioned. For my taste, I might sub out the rosemary for mint and add a bit of wildflower honey. But for the Old Fashioned, it was perfect. Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, I’ll definitely be walking back into this one. Again and again. And bringing my foodie friends.

I found Shama on a list of Bets New Restaurants in Seattle and was disappointed to see that there were only a few other parties eating while we were there. The restaurant is located right in Pike Place and has both covered outdoor and indoor seating. They may still be a little wobbly from taking the training wheels of but I have no complaints about the food, service or selection. Their menu is small but ample and well curated. We started with two appetizers because we couldn’t choose (and honestly, everything on that portion of the menu sounded good to me). We started with Bastella, which was kind fo a Moroccan chicken pot pie, and the Shama’s salad. Both were perfect small plates and offered unique flavors. For dinner we split the M’rouzia lamb tagine, which was just about enough for two people, although if you’re hungry get two. This was some of the best tagine I have ever had and the meat fell right off the bone. The freekah it was served with was perfectly cooke and topped with delicious toasted almonds. Whether you are a local or just visiting, you will want to give this place a try. It was impeccable. The atmosphere was great, our server was friendly and insightful. The meal was also reasonably pried, considering we split an entree. I hope this place survives and I hope more people get to have an amazing meal like ours!

Exceptional food and service. I highly recommend Shama, because every bite was delicious. The restaurant is also very beautiful, so it's perfect for special occasions. We were visiting for the weekend and so glad we came made reservations.

Visited this place for the first time and really loved it! It’s the first time I went to a Moroccon cuisine restaurant. The food was great, the staff was courteous and had a lovely evening with friends. I just wish the portion sizes were a little bit bigger but rest was all super!
