North‑side standby turning out house egg rolls, sesame chicken, and cashew chicken that many locals grew up on. Old‑school in the best way — simple, fast, and community‑minded.

stopped here since I was in the area. normally the only Chinese I eat in town is Cashew Chef. Their combo meal is same price $9 but it comes with egg roll and crab rangoon and a soda. This place only comes with a soda. The food was decent. I had orange chicken and it was good. I could tell the chicken had been fried hours ago. I was not offered any condiments. and to my surprise there were children working the drive thru.

New owners and man… it has gone down hill. Our family has been eating here for 5 generations and for the first time ever we threw all of the food away. It was completely inedible. Rubbery nasty chicken, changed recipes, egg rolls half the size they used to be, crab Rangoon was less than mediocre. It has been a sad day knowing our favorite spot is no longer what it used to be. If you’ve been here in the past, save your money and find a new place. We will not be back. It was a good run but we will be finding a new favorite Chinese food place.

I was here July 1, 2025, yesterday. I bought 2 Large Shrimp fried rice, 1 Small Shrimp fried rice. Did you change your cook? This was my favorite spot to buy fried rice. Not anymore. I spent around $38.00. the rice was so dry, tasteless, and I don't even think the shrimp was real. The shrimp looked like the imitation crab seafood grocery stores sell. Very disappointed to throw my money away. The rice is still in my refrigerator. I will throw away today. Thanks.

We chose to eat here when my boyfriend and I stayed in Springfield, since we were traveling through the states and this place was not good. I’m from Wisconsin so I trusted google reviews and was super excited only to be disappointed. We got shrimp lo mein, orange chicken with veggies and it came with rice, egg roll and crab rangoon on the side. I liked the lo mein noodles but the shrimp tasted old and gross. It didn’t look right either. The egg roll did not taste fresh at all either. It felt like they left it sitting out and served it just like that. The only good part was the orange chicken w/ veggies and the staff was friendly. I love Chinese food and I really wanted to give this place a chance, but the quality was not giving. Save your money if you’re coming from another town or state!

Stopped by to see Flosie the owner of Shanghai Inn for some of the best egg rolls in town. I haven’t found a better one yet 😉 They are so crispy and crunchy and full of deliciousness!!!!

Google
I got the sesame chicken. It was the worst Chinese food I've ever had. The chicken tasted bad which I believe they tried to cover up with way too much sauce. I also asked for it to be spicy but they must have forgotten that part. The egg roll had little to no cabbage inside and in not sure what the meat was. It appeared to be some cheap filler that also tasted terrible. The fried rice had no egg in it... just a low- cost attempt at something they could call fried rice. This is the absolute worst restaurant I've ever been to in my entire life. I would recommend that you do not go there.

My Family and I have bee. Going to Shanghai Inn since the mid or early 1980's They have amazing food and I really like Flossy she has been a familar face to me and has been there all this time. The only complaint i have is they raise their prices all the time and they are pretty pricey anymore. I still go there ocasionally because I love their food.

Yelp
There's not a single thing about this place that's fancy. It's about going there and getting some good food fast and inexpensively. The staff is friendly and the food is good. The portions are enormous if you ask me. It's a good place to get your grub on and be on your way. I didn't even know it existed until a friend pointed it out today and we had our lunch there.

Yelp
Wow, don't know where to start to describe my experience at Shanghai Inn. Filthy restaurant interior, and even worse food. Overpriced, and totally inedible. So bad that we trashed the food and went to McDonalds. Do yourself a favor and avoid Shanghai Inn.

Yelp
Might as well try it since it's close; what a mistake. Can't go wrong with cashew chicken huh? Wrong! All white meat was dry as the desert, the sauce was watery, oh and the "hand made" egg rolls eww... The final nail in the coffin was the price, way higher than most places. If you like watery sauce and tough chicken at a premium price theirs is your spot. If not literally drive a block or two in any direction.

Yelp
Best eggrolls in Springfield, and some of the best chicken+sauce+rice dishes. Shanghai Inn is also of extraordinary historical importance to the Springfield food scene. We did a full audio review on a recent episode of Springfood, MO, America's #1 podcast about restaurants in Springfield, Missouri. http://www.springfoodpod.xyz/episode/fb470583-6ad7-4d0d-8f0b-d6026c2c4ceb

Yelp
My wife and I are visiting Springfield and decided to try Shanghai. I ordered the combo dish which included cashew chicken, fried rice, egg roll, and crab rangoons. My wife got an order of spring rolls. The food was not good at all. None of it. The dark brown sauce with the cashew chicken tastes like grease with no real flavor. All of the fried items tasted like they had been fried in old grease that needed replacing. The fried rice was below average in taste. In addition, the restaurant interior was very cold. You had to wear a coat to be comfortable. We left with half of our lunch uneaten. No idea why this restaurant has decent reviews by others.

Yelp
Easily the best Chinese food in Springfield and very reasonably priced. I've been eating here since I was a teenager and now I'm 53 and have yet to have tasted anything bad. Flossie almost feels like a member of the family at this point! Cashew Chicken is always our go-to but everything else is great too. We even ate there the night we got married, 29 years ago!

Yelp
Food poisoning is a never welcome presence, and I dearly wish I'd told the staff this before they served me tainted meat. If you're ordering cashew chicken, no worries. They sell it quickly enough for it not to go bad. But if you dare venture to the other items on the menu, be wary. They are too cheap to toss out things that are out of date and will unabashedly serve them to any unwitting patron. Sure, the staff is nice enough, but I will never understand this state's fascination with throwing soy sauce in brown gravy and calling it cashew chicken. It's disgusting- you know you're just eating a soy and rice edition of KFC, right? My husband wanted to go there, so I went through the drive thru for him. Check out the overstuffed wonton I snuck a pic of.

Yelp
Food was freshly cooked and piping hot! I had Combo 3 with Hot and Spicy Chicken. The sauce was fantastic and meat crispy on outside and tender on inside. I chose the dark and light meat for variation. Crab Rangoon is not the sickly sweet type. Egg roll is hand rolled in house and tastes MUCH better than some other restaurants. I had the steamed rice and not fried. Rice is low quality standard fare, however. They should switch to jasmine rice and the whole meal would be superior. Still I would recommend for American Chinese food if you have a choice.

Yelp
Great food! Friendly staff egg roll and crab Rangoon are the best in Springfield... I highly recommend to anyone

Yelp
Second worse won ton soup I've ever had. That's not saying much because the worst was made with frozen mixed vegetables. Broth tasted odd and slightly burnt. Broth was very dark, no green onions or anything else. Wontons were over-boiled noodles. Slightly resembled wontons, but not by much. They weren't filled with anything. Rangoons were not horrible, but not that good. The place looked a little greasy. Ugly atmosphere, but that can be overlooked if the food is good. The lady that took the order was very nice.

Yelp
Went here regularly for the thirty years I lived in the area and try to hit it every time I'm back in town. It tastes like happy childhood memories. As a long time resident I can say it's the best cashew chicken on the Northside.

Yelp
Have been eating at Shanghai Inn for years. The food is good, reasonably priced and the portions are huge. Flossie is a sweetheart and always comes out to greet us.

Yelp
Stayed the night here during lent and was looking for a good non meat option. I ordered the shrimp fried rice with extra bean sprouts and onions. They did it up perfectly and what generous portions. I order a small and got enough fir two...but it was so good, I forced myself to eat it all. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese place in Springfield--and considering how many there are, that is saying something. Their portions are plentiful and every sauce I have tried is yummy. They have the BEST egg rolls I have had anywhere. It is on the north side, which isn't convenient for me, but that is probably good or I would end up eating here all the time. The only thing I think they could improve is to update/expand the dining area to accommodate more people and groups of more than 4. Also they are closed on Sundays.

Yelp
I went there today after not being there for a few years. I was excited because it always was so good!! The Cashew Chicken was ok but wasn't nearly as good as I remembered it to be. I got an egg roll and it was so bad I couldn't eat it. The food made me thirsty but they never asked if I needed a refill. As soon as I left I HAD to go get a fountain drink. I always leave a tip but did NOT today. They were not that busy. They didn't care. Will not go back!!!

Yelp
My favorite Chinese place in Springfield. The egg rolls are amazing. The best I have had anywhere. General Chicken is my preferred dish, but chicken fried rice is great as well.

Yelp
Good Chinese food. The portions range from healthy to ludicrous (like the fried rice or the soft noodle). It's not very big, but it's very affordable and tasty. Try the chicken fried rice, the general chicken, or the cashew chicken.

Yelp
Boom boom boom. Awesome cashew chicken just get spicy brown sauce on the side, one of the only few places here that offer it. Spicy means spiiiiiicy. Egg drop needs work

Tara M.

Yelp
Have been eating here since I was a little girl and it is definitely, I agree, the best Chinese food in Springfield. Love their chicken fried rice and wontons. I don't get to go as often as I'd like since I live about 45 minutes away, but when I do get to.....YAY!
