Denver’s Best Chinese Restaurants | Eater Denver

"Shanghai is a coastal municipality, so seafood is a must at this cozy suburban destination — especially fish, be it smoked as an appetizer or fried with pine nuts, but also eel, crab, and squid dishes (guests who express interest in the kitchen’s inner workings may be in store for an off-menu surprise or two). Beyond the ocean’s bounty, consider the green tea–smoked duck as the centerpiece for a family-style feast." - Ruth Tobias

Where to Eat With a Group in Denver

"Chinese food served family-style is always a sure bet for a crowd. This Greenwood Village longtimer welcomes them with a slew of Shanghainese and Sichuan specialties, including tea-smoked duck, Dynasty fish with pine nuts, cumin lamb, and twice-cooked pork belly, as well as a few tables decked out with Lazy Susans." - Ruth Tobias

I've been in Colorado for half a year. I finally found a taste of home! Especially Shanghai smoked fish! I drove for an hour: worth it!

Google
Great place we found through reviews and a little searching while in the area. This restaurant has been around for years and deserves the many accolades and positive comments from other reviewers. Definitely has a family feel where the chef/owner came out and chatted to us about menu options, and even whipped up something special for us when we couldn't quite find what we were in the mood for on the menu. Overall the food was authentic and delicious, and appreciated the personalized service. Highly recommended.

Google
I ordered this food for the first time via delivery. I had the shrimp with lobster sauce——it was absolutely delicious! My fiancé had the sesame chicken with white rice. He said, it was pretty good, but he didn’t like that it was overly breaded, compared to other restaurants. Our fortune cookies were stale, so we couldn’t finish those. Overall, the shrimp with lobster sauce was good. The other aspects were alright.

Google
We had such great time at this restaurant, the food was well priced and their pork was exceptional. The highlight however was our server Jayden, he was so kind and attentive. Will definitely come back.

Google
We love this place! It's very authentic and the flavors jump out in each dish. Not like other Chinese restaurants. We usually come here for that special me time. A great place to treat yourself.

Google
Excellent restaurant! Great customer service and food. My family whose from Shanghai loves coming here for the authentic food and the atmosphere of the place. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for Chinese food favorites or to try something more traditional. Their sesame chicken and crab cheese wantons are awesome, as is the Fish in Hot Chili Oil and Fried Chicken Chili Pepper dish.

Google
I KOREAA THIS VERY GOOD. I love this jambo noodle. Perfect for rainy cold chilly days. The spice is just perfect to heat up your mouth and the meat is so juicy.

Mike Herburger

Google
Worth the drive from Parker for Chinese. Best pork soup dumplings around.

Yelp
Good portions are good and service was quick. Ambiance is causal-yet-elegant. Video below shows graduation event but regular dine in was still great!

Yelp
Shanghai kitchen is a staple in the Greenwood Village community. One of the only establishments in the area that serves authentic Shanghainese Cuisine. An institution. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Shanghai Kitchen serves up some extremely delicious food, especially if you like Szechuan style food. The Szechuan style green beans are a must try. Their flavor will be what brings you back to Shanghai Kitchen over and over. I have tried many of the dishes in the menu and can highly recommend the Szechuan Style Triple Delight and the Orange Chicken. The service is always attentive and the restaurant itself is comfortable offering booth and table seating. I would suggest dining in as the times we have ordered food for take out have been underwhelming.

Yelp
It's nice to have a go-to restaurant in your direct vicinity and I must say that this Chinese restaurant is one of them (although I don't utilize it enough.) A few days ago, a little past 9pm (on Christmas Eve to be exact), on my way to go to a friend's house, I stopped here to get me a few items. There was one group of people (the last diner of the night) that was finishing off their late night meal. Other than that, I appeared to be the last customer for the night. The lady that greeted me asked me if it was for a dine in or to-go (wonder if she would have accepted me had I said dine in? Not sure.) I immediately responded, "To-go, please." Like I stated earlier I only wanted a few items (a few sides.) I got me the pork dumplings and the veggies egg rolls. The lady said it'd be 5 min. While waiting, I looked around the dining room and took a few photos. Nicely dimmed lights, each dining table was neatly arranged/set. Very clean and inviting. I like the bright red napkins. This restaurant appears to have received several accolades in the past (there are frames magazine articles on one of the walls.) As promised, it was about 5 minutes before my food was ready. A different lady gave me a bag that contained my food with a nice smile. Service is good here. I didn't eat the food until next day. Sometimes there is a huge difference between eating it fresh or a day old so I'll be fair with this review based on the fact that I ate it when the food was half day old. Overall, both of them were good. To be frank, when it comes to dumplings or potstickers, I prefer them to be pan-fried to be deep fried. I wonder if they ever make them pan-fried or even steamed. This will be a little request I'll be sure to make upon my next visit for sure. The veggie egg rolls were a bit small for the price. Tasted good however. I really need to try their main dishes in the future. Then I'll be able to elaborate more on their food in a real sense. Until then my hon/frank rating shall be 3-stat.

Yelp
Shanghai Kitchen recently introduced two new popular Shanghai dishes, the crab roe noodles and dry pot lamb chops, rarely seen not only in Denver, but also also in Los Angeles or New York. For foodies crave for authentic Shanghai food, these are must try. The other dishes are xiaolongbao, sweet and sour baby ribs, Buddhist delight, vegetable spring rolls and shepherd's purse tofu soup.

Yelp
I honestly didn't know what to expect when it comes to Shanghai food in Denver area - not many restaurants have been able to do SH food justice imho. I'm impressed by this place! They have some ver decent and authentic /staple / traditional shanghainese dishes here! Just need some prerequisite SH food knowledge to know what to order!

Stacey S.

Yelp
The hot & sour soup, xiao long bai dumplings, chili oil fish and basil eggplant are outstanding. Service is timely and friendly. We will keep enjoying your superb restaurant!!!
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
$25 for two egg rolls and general tso's chicken. It was so mediocre you have no idea, how does this place have great reviews lol?! I feel like because Denver's food scene is mediocre, people delude themselves into thinking places have good food. This isn't it.

Yelp
I've made a reservation 2 weeks ago for 9 people to celebrate the Lunar New Year. We arrived and waited 5 minutes before they showed us our table. There were 3 servers working the dining area and the take outs. The place is small and super packed. No one came to our table not even to bring water and menus for 25 minutes. I grabbed the menus and our group waited for another 10 minutes. I told the head server that we will be leaving because no one came to take our drinks and food orders. It seemed they were super busy. She showed up to our table as we were leaving and told her so. She said ok and didn't care including the other two servers. This is the first time that we received horrible service. The owner and manager should know that it will be busy on Lunar New Year so they should have more people working where one taking care of the take outs and the payments while leaving the other servers to take care of the dining area. I wanted to try this place because of their reviews but I won't ever after tonight. I have better service at Super Star, Hong Kong Cafe and Star Kitchen even when they are super busy. MY friends and I were SO DISAPPOINTED!!!

Yelp
While waiting for our to-go order, we munched on Xiao Long Bao (XLB), because, it would be sacrilege to not eat XLB hot and fresh out of the steamer! My mom, a true Shanghainese, said Shanghai Kitchen's XLB is pretty authentic. She especially liked that the meat filling wasn't too fatty. That's not to say the bun didn't contain enough soup, though. I thought it tasted great. My tongue is still burning a couple of days later from eating it while it's piping hot, but it's worth it! Our to-go foods stayed warm thanks to the meticulous packaging (they would tape down lids to make sure nothing leaks!) The Lion's Heads meatballs are impressing, bigger than my fists! So don't be stingy, share with someone so you both have room to try more stuff! We adored that night's special dish: ginger and scallion crabs stir fried with rice cakes, so so yummy and filling. The portion was huge and you would think there would be more rice cakes than crabs (as the former is cheaper) but Shanghai Kitchen is way more generous with their crabs! The sweet and sour fish steaks were more Americanized than Chinese, it's not bad, but next time I'm ready to dine in, I'll order the whole fish in sweet and sour sauce. I'm sure it'll be way better!

Yelp
Authentic Chinese dishes with lots of menu options. Tried the dumplings appetizer and it was very flavorful. The Hong Kong combination noodles is also very good with lots of chicken ,beef and shrimps. Will have to come back to try out more
google avatar

Joe Y.

Yelp
Decor is very Shanghai bund like. Shang means upper and Hai means ocean. So the cuisine of Upper Ocean is sweet and it's also the birthplace of Xiaolongbao. The Chinese menu here is precise and focused with Chinese and English translation. The Americanized dishes look good too.

Yelp
This food made me angry. Beef lo mein: 2/10 Egg roll: 2/10 Cream cheese wontons: 3/10 Wonton soup: 6/10 Pretty decent soup, everything else belongs in a dumpster. Please close soon, Shanghai Kitchen. I'd like something edible in this location.

Yelp
Edamame was hot ,place is very clean Service efficient and food was fresh will definitely be returning

Miles C.

Yelp
I used to love this place but they've SIGNIFICANTLY hiked their prices the last couple of years in the 30% range. I stopped ordering from there. Was going to get food Christmas night but passed when I saw yet another price increase. I prefer Hong Kong Station these days.
google avatar

Joy J.

Yelp
Where to begin? First table seated of 11 tables by the time we left an hour later. Placed an order for $80 of food for two of us. We got the large egg drop soup and a glass of wine. It took three tries to get someone to track down white pepper for the soup. (No, that's salt. That's sugar. That's Sweet N Low.) Had to ask twice for the hot tea before finally setting a fresh pot (+) that was so fresh it was still basically water (-). After watching three other tables and countless to-go orders get picked up, we left a $20 on the table and went to Pho 75, which was ready in 15 min. For some reason Yelp refuses to let me leave one star.

David K.

Yelp
This is our favorite Chinese restaurant. The food is excellent and the owners are great. We love Shanghai Kitchen!
google avatar

Lori R.

Yelp
Delicious! We have ordered a ton of food from their menu and it has all been good. I didn't notice any MSG in their food or any MSG side effects which is a huge plus.

Portia E.

Yelp
My family has been coming to this restaurant for years and we've loved every visit. The customer service is amazing and the atmosphere of the restaurant is great. A fantastic place to get Chinese food favorites like Sesame Chicken and Crab Cheese Wontons or to try some authentic Shanghainese Cuisine. My favorites are the Fried Chicken Chili Pepper and the Scallion Pancakes. Highly recommend trying this place out!
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in town. The lunch value is unreal and always comes out delicious and fast. The owners are always around and work hard to make the dining experience professional and special. Try the shrimp dumplings, they are amazing!!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
We hadn't been to this restaurant for a while but decided to try it again due to dearth of Chinese places in Tech Center. Unfortunately, things at Shaghai have gotten worse. Sweet sour chicken was too bready & tasteless. Soup was like dishwater. The beef broccoli was acceptable but overall, the meal was disappointing. We won't be back.

Lauri ..

Yelp
Food was good. Service was a little slow, possibly new employees. The restaurant was clean. I'd recommend giving them a try!

Valerie R.

Yelp
Awesome food and the owners are very nice! We will come back. It's a cute the place. Nice environment!
google avatar

Vanitha G.

Yelp
I ordered Chicken Momos - probably made more traditional than most others places - I could see the difference in Quality and freshness of it. Also, ordered Spicy Traditional Chicken and shrimp and pineapple rice. I loved the taste of Cooked pineapple soo much.
google avatar

Diane T.

Yelp
This place has been on my 'to try' list for quite a while. Me and The Hubs tried it recently for 'date night' and I'm kicking myself that we didn't come here sooner. Wow! The food is good! We ordered mostly from the 'Chinese Special' section of the menu and were not disappointed. I think we ordered five different things, including soup, and everything was fabulous! We ordered Mustard Green Fish, Pork with Bamboo and Bean Curd, Chinese Broccoli, Hong Kong Noodles, and a soup that I can't remember. We did have a lot of leftovers to take home, but that was intentional. We had great lunches for the next two days! This was a great find and has the best Chinese food I've found so far since moving to Colorado. And the service was super-friendly. We will definitely be back! BTW - they have a full bar!

Daniel Z.

Yelp
The food here is great. Good service attitude towards customers. The settings are chill and comfortable. A very good place in general, definitely worth a try!

Yelp
Authentic shanghai cuisine in north DTC. This is my go to Chinese restaurant since it's so close, and the food is so delicious. They have an authentic menu with English and Chinese to accommodate for those who need either languages. I would skip the sesame chicken and Mongolian beef and try out the kitchen specials. I highly recommend the braised pork belly, minced beef soup, and the spicy beef tendons. If you're feeling even more adventurous, go for a big pot of red chili peppers and salted fish. This place has an incredible range of Chinese dishes from all parts of China. The restaurant atmosphere is very inviting, and the servers are kind. Service is usually fast unless it gets busy, which it typically does around dinner time. Definitely check this place out if you're in the area or want to try some delicious Chinese cuisine!

Michael K.

Yelp
Always excellent food and service. Have been eating here for years. Try some of the authentic Chinese dishes from the Chinese menu!

Francis R.

Yelp
Authentic Chinese south of Denver! Sure they have "Asian fusion" (fried breaded chicken in sugar sauce), if you want. But I went immediately for the roast duck, soup dumplings, and traditional steamed whole fish (ginger and scallions). Took my back to my childhood. Last tip, this is family style portions! No need for each person to order their own meal, it's meant to share !
google avatar

Maple W.

Yelp
We ordered noodle soup and cold chicken, a couple of Shanghai style dishes. They are all big dishes and tasty.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
I didn't expect to have very traditional Shanghai style food in Denver, at least I couldn't find one in Dallas. When I came to ski this year, I just did a random search and found this restaurant in Denver which offers "shredded fresh water eel". It is a very authentic dish and many people in China grew up eating it, but it was so hard to find in the US. I really like the food, and this small restaurant in a city with not so many Chinese people indeed impressed me!
google avatar

Keva S.

Yelp
The fried tofu was exceptional. The waitstaff was both kind and accommodating, love it
google avatar

Ren N.

Yelp
Excellent place for various reasons: 1. Nice ambient environment that is not too bright or too dark. Music is nice, jazzy, not the cheesy Chinese traditional in the back 2. Chef is Shanghainese, how much more authentic can this place get? 3. Food is amazing and verified authentic by my parents who are from Shanghai. Picky as usual but if they are satisfied that says a lot about this place. I've read some critical comments here and really if you want good food you have to know what to order. If you order food that sounds like what you find at PF Changs or your local frozen food section orange chicken, come on, what do you expect? Ask for recommendations before you order!!!

Connie H.

Yelp
We ordered two entrees and one app at 5:45 and were told that it would take an hour and a half for pick up to be ready. Since it was Christmas, I understood that it would be busy, so we agreed to this. I showed up at 7:30, to a huge line of people, and was told my order would take another 1 to 2 hours to make. I went home, and when I tried to call to ask about my order an hour later, the phone was busy. I showed up at 9:00, and I did not receive my order until 9:48. The food is fine. The veggie lo mein was a little under seasoned, the black bean spareribs were adequate. The cream cheese wontons were fine. However, if the wait is going to be longer than the customer was told, I would recommend that they have a callback system to inform customers of this. I tried to ask if I would receive a notification when I first placed the order, and I was told just to show up. Since I had to wait a total of 4 hours to receive my order, I would expect to be compensated with a free meal, or have my meal be discounted at least. Like just a thought. After all, the guy filling orders at the front said that multiple people did not pick up their orders, and he was taking home lots of food. Overall, I am disappointed that this establishment has zero communication with customers. As the "best Chinese restaurant in Denver," I expect better.
google avatar

Yelp
Came to Denver with friends as tourists and glad we found this amazing Chinese restaurant with the most authentic Shanghai cuisine. Nothing we ordered has made us disappointed. In fact, I can't find anything to complain from the food. The fact that we finished all dishes (we ordered 7 dishes for just four of us) except just for one that we DONT really have any room for it, will explain everything! I would 100% recommend to everyone. Will definitely come here again next time we visit Denver.

Kaitlyn S.

Yelp
DO NOT ORDER THE GARLIC HONEY CHICKEN - it is deep fried, and when I mean deep fried, I mean the chicken had a 1cm layer of fried dough around it that made it taste like a funnel cake. All of the fried morsels were sitting in a soup bowl of what I assume was butter or some other form of oil. I'm from the south and enjoy the occasional funnel cake, but it would've been nice if there was ANY warning about this on the menu. Nasty, and made me feel sick for the rest of the day.

Jian H.

Yelp
Very authentic Shanghai cuisine. Pleasant surprise on my way to Beaver creek. Will come again next time I pass by.

Saad S.

Yelp
The most disappointing experience ever first visiting Denver. We had high expectations as we have heard that there is great customer service in Denver. We were mistaken. We arrived and were not acknowledged at the beginning and had to basically seat ourselves. Now it was time to take the order. The girl was brand new and we felt bad because it felt as if she was just not trained by the manager and the owners. We had to call her out because she had forgotten about us to place the order. We placed the order and literally waited about 30 min until we had to call a manager over because it was just taking too long and there were probably only 5 tables in total at that time. The manager was extremely rude and she said she "does not know how the dishes look like or how they are made" I mean cmon you are the manager right? Now it was time for the "food" We had ordered 4 soup bowls in total. The manager came out with 3 soup bowls and one incorrect order. Keep in mind we have been here for about an hour now. We told her we have waited about an hour now and have just gotten our soups which is wrong. She was extremely rude again and started to say we should have known what we were ordering. We were like what??? You guys are the ones who took the order wrong and now you're blaming the customers. At this point we were fed up and we just wanted to leave. When we were leaving the manager went to her friends and started saying things in her language and all of their staff was just looking at us. Horrible customer service for a restaurant that says they have the "best Chinese food in Denver" Managers please learn customer service and train your waiters and be respectful to them. We could literally hear you screaming at your staff in the back when we were seated in the dining area. Will never come back here.

Yelp
Best Chinese food since I moved away from New England where China Sails and South Pacific were my favorites... a gazillion years ago in 1969 We had Hot and Sour soup, crab wontons, Mushu pork, brown rice, and Dan Dan pork lo mein!! I will take pictures next time... couldn't wait to dig in! yum yum highly recommend!!
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Came for Pad Thai, but when I asked about that vs General Tso's chicken, the General chicken was recommended. Nice atmosphere. They had a lunch special that had soup, egg roll, and appetizer. Wonton soup was good - had some strong onion slices in it, but some iceberg lettuce shreds (?). It was a small cup but filled with stuff, including 3 wontons. Wontons were thin and long though - a little hard to eat with the soup spoon / dipper. Crab Rangoons were good, served with good hot mustard and sweet sauce. Egg roll tasted food dipped in mustard and sweet sauce. General Tso's chicken was good. Food was prompt and hot.

Zech Y.

Yelp
Worst Chinese food I have ever had. Pic 1 is what 40 dollar fish look like. There's no utensils in the bag and only two bowl of rice for five dishes. I called and they told me that the sauce was missing and told me that they could deliver. To make their trip worth it, I have ordered another dish but it took nearly an hour for them to deliver to 3.9 mil distance. Once the food was delivered, the driver kept asking for tips and told me that he doesn't have a pen so that he wanted to sign instead of me. I was trying to keep my dogs inside so I asked him to give me the receipt so I can sign with my pen. He wouldn't even give me the food without promising to give him a tip. I have never met such an unethical and unprofessional driver before. His action resulted in my dog escaping the room.

Haley C.

Yelp
The chicken lo mein is absolutely to die for. We love the fact that it's quick pick up and always hot! Best Chinese in DTC
google avatar

Yelp
I am a longtime fan of Shanghai Kitchen! Years ago when our favorite spot closed we found this gem. Christmas dinner tonight was no different on the quality and care put into our dinner. The wait tonight was a bit overwhelming but all said it is a blip and not at all their normal service. On any other night when we call in an order it is fulfilled quickly. We had hot and sour soup that had just the right amount of kick and our favorite sesame beef (it's as close as we have found to our favorite Kung Pao Beef from Red Coral). Thanks for a great meal tonight and we look forward to picking up again soon!

Riza H. C.

Yelp
We went here after their remodeling days. They provide a Private Room if you are bringing along your guests for a BIG PARTY. Hubs and I went here for an EARLY Friday Evening Dinner at about 17:10hrs ish. By the time its almost 18:00hrs, this establishment is indeed packed with other patrons alike. We opt to order from the "CHINESE MENU". Hubs opt to have 2 Main Entrees of the Salt and Pepper Chicken ($12.95) and Cannon Beef ($13.95). I opt to have the Spicy Squid Sautee ($10.95) and the Fried Rice ONLY with Shrimp. All in all the food comes out fast. Both the Cannon Beef and Squid dish DID tasted similar. The only difference was in the Canon Beef dish contains Carrots, while the Squid dish Does NOT. Both dishes contains Bell Peppers, Lotus Roots, Bamboo Shoots etc. Both dish its MORE Greasy than I am used to. The saving grace for my overall dining experience is the Fried Rice, that I ask ONLY to have Shrimp. Its the WHITE kind of Fried Rice, that I prefer. For this alone, this establishment received 3 stars in my books. Else, it would be lower than that. I heard great things about this establishment ESPECIALLY their PORK dishes but since I don't eat PORK I cannot really say about those dishes... *SIGH* To return NOT IN A Hurry, unless they can WOW me with the dishes that I prefer to eat. Left Shanghai Kitchen at about 18:20hrs ish. Shanghai Kitchen 4940 S. Yosemite St, E-8 Englewood, CO 80111 Tel : (303)-290-6666

Yelp
Solid family owned spot with lots of regulars. The menu is diverse although I don't understand how a restaurant can be good with so many items on the menu. We opted out for green tea duck, shrimp dumplings, Hong Kong noodles - food is good, not wow but just solidly good. It's a decent spot if you want to stay local. For more authentic items Federal is still the place in Denver. Friendly fast service.

Chengliang L.

Yelp
This restaurant is totally disappointing. The food is not as good as we expected neither the service. And the service is so bad, the waitress did not provide us any water until we asked, honestly there is no service at all. I would not recommend you to come here and try their food as a tourist in Denver, it will just ruin your whole trip.

Jad S.

Yelp
The food is outstanding. The best food I've ever tasted. The Shanghai kitchen is the most authentic. I recommend 100/10. Must bring your family over and try !

Roxy V.

Yelp
Came in to try a new Chinese place. Started with an OK hot and sour soup which is the only reason this place even gets a star. Everything after that was poorly made. Got the coconut shrimp- half were burnt. The egg roll was disgusting and mostly oil. My fiancé and I split the Mongolian pork entree and it was 80% onion with small scraps of meat you had to go digging to find. The waitress lost our ticket so it took forever to get our food at all. Overall very negative experience. Oh- and we both got food poisoning.

Yelp
I go there EVERY week. The food their is really good. The best Chinese restaurant in Denver. As a Chinese, i think the food here is really traditional.

Jiang Z.

Yelp
They cheat on the bill! Be careful with your check if you dine/order here!!! The food was fine but it was disgusting that they cheated on the bill. We were charged $7 more on one dish and $1 more on another. The woman boss gave some bullshit excuse when we checked the bill with her. If they can cheat on the bill, how could I trust them prepare food with good quality? You are stupid if you think your customer is stupid.
