"“Another restaurant which I’m always looking for is a Shanghainese restaurant, which is my hometown and I miss very much. It’s in the San Gabriel area. I think their chefs are directly from China. Therefore the cooking and the food are ‘pure.’ They serve all the classic Chinese dishes, my childhood dishes. Comfort food, but with great skill and authenticity.” " - arden shore

I have been there several times over the years and really like the Shanghailander Palace. If you like traditional Shanghainese food I would highly recommend it. There are plenty of Shanghai cold dishes and main dishes to choose from to fit your tastes. Can be a little pricy depending on your orders. A nice clean restaurant and the waiter's services are very warm and helpful. Takeout is pretty convenient as well.

Five stars for the amazing time I had with my Ad Gals. The service was great, quicker and friendlier than most places nearby ⭐️ My favorite dishes were the jellyfish and the eel 🤤 the marinade raw crab and the lightly fried fish filet are also good. Not sure what the sign at front is about but better safe than sorry 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️🫶photos for your reference below.

Five of us dined together and ordered a total of ten dishes—three appetizers and seven mains. The dishes were all quite authentic, showcasing solid technique and balanced flavors. Appetizers included pickled radish, jellyfish with vinegar, and drunken chicken. The jellyfish stood out with its refreshing crunch and well-balanced acidity. The drunken chicken had a nicely layered wine marinade—aromatic but not overpowering. On to the main courses: cauliflower with smoked bacon in casserole, stir-fried fresh abalone with ginger and scallion, meatball stuffed with salted egg yolk, vermicelli in casserole, and glutinous shao mai, among others. The vermicelli casserole had excellent wok hei (wok fragrance), giving it that deep, smoky flavor we love. The meatball with salted egg yolk was rich and savory, and the abalone was tender with clean, bright seasoning. Every dish was well-prepared, and the overall meal felt comforting.

11/2/2024 - Had a banquet menu lunchoen at an elegant private room. Overall, each dish is delicious while the Pan-fried buns (生煎包) is average (2 or 3 stars) because the meats and taste is not good, or lacks umami (缺乏鲜味), although the appearance is very good. This is either #1 Shanghai restaurant or one of the top 2 in the County of Los Angeles with an authentic Chinese Cuisine. On the other hand, exchanging a plate only took place once during a 12-course banquet period, which is below an upscale dining restaurant standard.

Google
I would give this restaurant a five star if it were for the awful long time it took to get our food. It took almost an hour for us to get two dishes this evening after waiting to be seated for 40 min, it was absolutely crazy! Fortunately, the wait staff were all friendly and the manager brought us a complimentary bowl of Shanghai sticky rice balls, which was nice. All five dishes we ordered were authentic in taste and execution, so no complaints there. If the restaurant can get its kitchen staff to work out the logistics, it will be great. Food is pricey compared to other comparable Shanghai restaurants, but good.

MSG, wow! So thirsty. Got to drink 2 glasses of water 🥴 In general, food taste good. Siu Lung Bao skin were too thick which covered the crab meat flavor. The sweet lotus roots were delicious as appetizers. Stir fry eels was so oily... The sticky rice in a pocket was great. If you like sticky rice, must try. By the way, if you pay cash, you will get 5% off.

Google
Love the decor and the environment. Most importantly the food! Pickled prune fried fish may sound weird, but was delicious! It draws the sourness from pickled prunes, deeply fried so the whole fish including bones is edible, and finishes with a glaze of sweet and sour sauce. Yum! Best Shanghai restaurant in LA! The weekday lunch specials are of great value! We ordered a couple of appetizers afraid the $14 lunch meal won’t fill us, but we were surprised!

I thought it was ok considering it’s not in a major city. Worth the visit if you are in the area if you are looking for something to eat.

Yelp
There was a lot of people in the restaurant around dinner time and I liked that were little appetizers to eat while waiting for the main entrees. The food was good but definitely a bit on the pricer side for the portion size. The soup had the largest portion but the beef entree we got was a lot smaller. This restaurant is more of a banquet/family dining to celebrate rather than a quick bite out. There's a parking lot in the back as well as street parking.

Yelp
DON'T EAT! NOT RECOMMENDED! Old Shanghai Stewed Duck in Soy Sauce 8/10

Yelp
One of our favorite spots in the 626. - the Spicy Pepper Sichuan Fish dish has the best broth ever. So unique and flavorful and literally golden. Come here just for this! Don't miss out. - the staples are all delicious: the pan fried buns, the juicy pork dumplings, and the fatty pork belly. - the garlic pea shoots is probably one of our favorite veggie dishes.

Yelp
This restaurant is doing very well now, and there's always a wait when I go. We went on a Friday night and waited for about half an hour. I think the long wait is mostly because their tables are quite large, making it harder for parties of two or four to get seated quickly. We ordered the special homemade pickled fish, original shrimp, and stir-fried vegetables. The food at this Shanghainese restaurant is excellent. If they had more small tables instead of mostly large ones, it would be more accommodating for smaller groups.

Yelp
It felt like something has changed with the menu. The quality of food is still delicious. We noticed that some of the portions were *ever so slightly* smaller than before; ie the ching chiang cured pork is always one that we get, but the cubes are sliced a bit smaller than before. Still delicious but made me a little sad to see! Service is as always quite minimal and you will have to flag someone down. It still remains to be great food in a quiet, clean setting, and easy parking!

Yelp

Yelp
I wanted to treat my Shanghainese parents out to lunch but we were disappointed because it felt like paying a lot for food they could've cooked better at home. The food here was very overpriced, and while it did taste authentic, overall it was mid. My favorite dish was the kung pao chicken, which isn't even Shanghainese. The braised pork was just TOO sweet. The fish lacked dimension.

Sheila W.

Yelp
This used to be Coco's and now it looks nothing like Coco's. Very nice decor, clean, and modern. Seating feels a bit crowded. They have private banquet rooms available for large parties. Highly recommend making reservations as this place was packed. Food has good presentation. They had many staff working but Randolph was the one who you see walking back and forth helping customers, with a big smile, and a calm voice. Food was very good. Large private parking lot and street parking available.

Qina P.

Yelp
I will be back. Service is good. And food is yummy. They will pack your food for you if you have leftovers. 2.50 for regular white rice. If you don't wanna order fried rice. Braised pork belly is super yummy. And the sour fish in soup is super yummy too! The environment inside is so clean and relaxing. It is fancy.

Vincent T.

Yelp
Shanghainese restaurant located in Arcadia. They have dishes here specific for Shanghainese cuisine and dishes you can't really order in other authentic Chinese restaurants. Food is really good! Service is also good, all the waiters speak mandarin. I would say if you don't speak mandarin just prepared to wave down the waiters to get their attention. Ambiance is super Chinese interior wise, the outside looks a little run down but the inside is nice. Crystal shrimp and braised pork was delicious. This the type of place you bring families or big parties as you want to share all the different types of dishes. Price is okay, a little high but if you come with a big party it's okay. They also have VIP rooms. All in all, I enjoyed the food here and would come back!

Shirley T.

Yelp
Parking: Parking lot available as well as nearby street parking Ambience: Fairly large but busy, with many tables designed for large parties Service: Standard, no complaints! Taste: Deliciously hearty soup and rice! Veggie and meat dishes were a bit too oily, and their pan fried buns weren't as crispy as they've previously been (a bit soggy, actually). Overall, would still recommend for good Shanghai cuisine!

Yelp
I came here with my parent's Shanghainese friends and loved all of the food. We ordered enough to fill our whole table and the total was much, much less than I expected. I think there was a full meal x 2 we took to go with us because we couldn't eat more. My favorites: * Pork belly (YUM) - pair it with some rice * Crab * I don't remember the name... but it was a mix of noodles, meat, and veggies (in Chinese, it starts with "jiao") * Chrysanthemum Tea This place is pretty well-lit, lively - your typical Asian sit-down restaurant (think Capital Seafood). Service was solid - never had to wait too long for someone to come by and check on us. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The parking lot isn't well-lit, so if you come at night, keep an eye out!

Angelica M.

Yelp
We live in Vegas and my boyfriend was very exited to try this place after looking at their pictures and exited about their fried rice. We walked in around 8:30 pm, got looked at funny with an unpleasant look and after asking if we can order to go he stated that it was for "club members only." As a biracial couple being black and Hispanic, with the entire dining room and staff being Chinese and no signs about having to be a member in the restaurant OR in the reviews, I can't help but feel that we were turned away based on race.

Yelp
We were celebrating a week before Chinese New Year and wanted to try a new restaurant to us, which we've been hearing good things about. We arrived before 11:00 AM opening just to be sure we got a nice table. The room was spectacular, but not necessarily in size, but clean and inviting. The food was served hot and fast, which is so nice to receive nowadays. Of the various courses serviced, the seaweed filet of fish was a standout in its freshness and crunch. Other notable entrees were the meatball soup, porkbelly with whole eggs and the fresh fish served in a sweet red sauce. As we were seated next to the bar, it is probably the best seat in the house to socialize and not be in the middle of the busy service and room full of other diners. If you will be celebrating the lunar new year, this is just one suggestion among so many great restaurants in the 626!

Yelp
I've been to the Hacienda Heights location a few years ago and I loved it. My feelings didn't change this time round either. The veggie rice 菜飯 - 10/10 Pork belly 紅燒肉 - 9/10 - a little too sweet. Eel 鱔魚 - 10/10 Authentic Shanghainese food, I would've chugged 5 bowls of rice if I wasn't on a diet lol. Had to try very hard to control myself. It was so good. Highly recommend.

Mike L.

Yelp
I came on a weekday for lunch and parking was very easy. I tried a few items and started with chrysanthemum tea which was nice and flavorful. Black pepper steak cubes: served on a skillet with thinly slice onions, the dish was overall pretty good. The beef was tender and the crunch from the skillet made it good. Pan fried buns: the bottom of the buns are coated in sesame seeds and pan fried so as such there was a strong sesame flavor. Inside, the pork was good but the inside was just very dry. Braised (hong shao) tofu: the dish was on the salty end and had some crunchy pieces even though it was a sauce based dish. I think there was too much cornstarch as the sauce was really thick. Service was okay - the chef forgot one item we ordered as it was not transferred over from the printer. There was also a moment when cigarette smoke filled in the whole dining room as I assume someone was smoking by an open door. Overall everything was just okay.

Suwannee C.

Yelp
The food were delicious and nice presentation. There are lots of dishes that you can't find somewhere else. We went several times in daytime and the service were good but yesterday my friends were celebrating my birthday and the service was terrible. The waiter was very rude and made us feel uncomfortable!

B C.

Yelp
Food is very average. Nothing standout except for the fatty pork, which is not welcome either because the man who appears to be the manager gave the worst customer service with bad attitude even you order a whole table of what he considers non-pricey dishes. Will never go dine-in there if he is around. Management please take note how you want to keep your customers.

Septimius T.

Yelp
Excellent food service and experience . It made me into a new lover of Chinese food at its finest

Howard L.

Yelp
Very authentic Shanghai gourmet with many selections. Customer service is very good. Ambiance is great for small to large groups. I like their private banquet rooms for family dinners.

Lizzy L.

Yelp
This was one of the best Shanghainese meals I've ever had! We came with a large group of about 15 people so they let us use the private room in the back. Great service and the food came quickly after we ordered. My cousins and uncle/aunt ordered like 20 items from the menu, banquet-style. Our favorite items were the pan-fried buns, fried fish, salted mixed Shanghai rice (like fried rice with bok choy, SO flavorful), Shanghai Style Sesame Pancake, and seafood soup. Other unique dishes we tried: loofah vegetable dish, and #107. Fish fillet with seaweed; crispy on the outside with tender fish on the inside.

Nina W.

Yelp
This place is ok. I like how there's a lot of parking. Ambiance is nice, place was clean, bathrooms clean and they were not understaffed. We got good service. Food is ok, I think it's a bit salty. Prices on the high side. Portions are on the small side. The one dish I would not recommend is SongShu Yu (squirrel fish). The sweet and sour sauce was way overwhelming and I couldn't taste the fish. It was also very dry and for $50, I expected better. Acceptable for a special occasion since ambiance is nice and tea is good but for an everyday meal, go elsewhere for better pricing.

Jessie Z.

Yelp
We were planning to celebrate my FIL's birthday at Chang's Garden, but it was booked for a private event. Pretty much accidentally stumbled upon this place and so glad we did! TL;DR my in laws and husband are from Hangzhou (right next to Shanghai) and approve of this place. This a nicer restaurant to eat quality authentic Chinese food with modern food presentation, without breaking the bank. The atmosphere is traditional, but more elevated (and clean) than your average Chinese banquet restaurant, though unpretentious (i.e. not Meizhou Dongpo status). On a Saturday lunch, the place was full but without a wait, and most diners appeared to be upper middle class Chinese people. I would definitely take my parents or out-of-town relatives here. They do have several private rooms for larger parties. The food is pricier but very fair. You get what you pay for in quality and presentation. People should know that Shainghainese food supposed to be generally lighter in flavor. It's no Chinese American takeout. Shanghailander braised pork with brown sauce (4.5/5): The flavor was great, texture relatively tender, and the eggs were very flavorful. They do use a fattier pork belly (like the top is a big slab of fat), but it does have all 5 layers of a quality cut. Very good overall. Fish fillet with seaweed (5/5): Almost every table ordered this. The batter is airy with a perfect delicate crisp on the outside and mild seaweed flavor, without being overly oily. The fish on the inside is very tender. They give you white pepper on the side for dipping. Shaoxin wined chicken (5/5): Poached chicken marinated in wine. Super tender, not overly alcoholic, with a crisp and chewy skin. House special hot pot (4/5): The soup base itself was really tasty, with an assortment of fish and beef balls, shrimp, fresh egg wrapper dumplings, bean thread noodles, napa, ham, pork skin, and even sea cucumber. Would hesitate to recommend it to a non-Asian because the items are pretty niche Chinese. Pretty good for a chilly day, but not amazing. The clay pot it comes in is huge, but the dish itself is also pretty pricey. Could feed at least 10 people. It's nice that the server will portion and serve the bowls for you. Crab Tofu (2/5): I think the sauce is made with crab roe? But I was expecting there to be actual meat. The crab flavor and texture was barely detectable. I might as well have just been eating a vegetarian dish of tofu with peas and carrots dish. Not worth it for the price. Shanghailander pan fried buns: We ordered this for my kid, who seemed to like the outer bun. No rating because I didn't actually try it. I will say these are some of the best looking Shanghai pan fried buns I've seen. Service is slightly better than the average Chinese restaurant in that they'll pack your leftovers for you, serve you the soup, and don't rush you to leave. For kids, they only provide a high chair and there's a changing table in the women's bathroom. Parking is easy since they have their own lot.

Betty W.

Yelp
My long loved Shanghainese restaurant. It feels home to come here. Ambiance is very very old Shanghai feel. Food and ambiance are 5 star. I took one star off because of the service and price....sorry Favorite dish is always the braised pork in soy sauce Hong Shao rou. It is perfectly seasoned and colored. Juicy inside. Lots of restaurants make this meat very dry. But they handled it perfectly here. I also like it that it is not overly sweetened. Just perfect. The service always feels somehow under par for a beautiful Chinese restaurant like this. The waiters are mostly Shanghainese. The original waiters are mostly replaced. I feel that the current waiters could use some more smile especially when greeting the guests when we are entering the door. Maybe it's the arrogance in Shanghainese? Anyways, I still love the food. Maybe I just have high expectation for a homy restaurant.

Zixin X.

Yelp
The other servers were all nice, at least compared to the manager, who I have never seen with such a shitty attitude, service, and mandatory tips. I think his name was Jason? The restaurant was otherwise great, but the manager was a real downer.I even suspect that the manager is a mole sent by another restaurant, using his terrible service and attitude to drive away customers from this place.

Robert L.

Yelp
Food****-- really good flavor, we ordered Braised Pork Belly, Drunken Chicken Zui Ji, Seaweed Fried Fish; surprisingly their 毛血旺is actually pretty good and authentic. Would come bk again for other dishes but if you are allergic to msg then maybe not Service**-- below average, gave us wrong tea at the start and don't even provide utensils for shared dishes. Saw their waiter literally put his shoe on the chair to tie the shoelaces not wiping out...wonder how they would treat the food in the kitchen? Ambiance***-- average, even the place trying to show the Shanghai atmosphere but failed miserably.. all I felt are fake flowers and some prop-like interior

Shirely C.

Yelp
Very authentic Shanghainese food, nice environment too! Ordered fried sautéed fish, san Huang chicken, bruised pork, scramble fresh water shrimp, seaweed fried fish, Chinese spinach tofu soup, Shanghailander chow main The slow cooked pork is the best! Very tender, full of flavor Top notch shrimp, very tender chicken too We are happy with the food, hope the service can be better! Probably they are short of hands!

Khine W.

Yelp
Very nice interior, finely decorated, spacious and comfortable dining hall. Food is not as tasty as other Chinese restaurants. I'm sure there are different varieties of Chinese food out there so comparing this place to others nearby, I wouldn't recommend it for the similar price places. String beans was really good but the rest of what we ordered were mediocre with taste.

Miranda Y.

Yelp
Came here to celebrate a relative's birthday. We ordered a few entrées, an appetizer, and a dessert. Service is ok. The atmosphere of this place is fine. A small little place.

Yelp
Food was excellent! Especially the chicken was really good!!!! It was juicy and tender. Love the rice, I couldn't stop eating! The serving size was decent and we couldn't finish it so had to take it to go. They were super busy so in comparison the service was not bad. Had adequate parking spaces so didn't have to worry about that. I'll definitely go back again to eat.

Yelp
Love this Shanghainese restaurant. The dishes are unique and tasty and the environment is clean and pretty upscale. The menu is seriously overwhelming. Luckily our Shanghainese friend was there to order the dishes. Aside from the fried pork and dumpling dish (which is still good but just a bit generic) in my photo section all the dishes are recommended. Sorry I don't know of a good way to get the proper name of the dishes so you might have to just show them the pictures to order.

Yelp
First, I liked this location much more than the original in Hacienda Hts; decor, taste, and service are all better here. Second, the old folks dining with me were ok with the camera eating first at the beginning, but quickly forgot as more food came out. So, only pics of the first few items. Third, dad wanted to give his comments, so see Chinese below. Overall the food was tasty, if a bit too oily for me. Cured pork was delicious, goose soup was delicious but oily, youtiao shrimp was tasty but too oily and too heavy on the sauce. Shanghai chicken was good, bean curd roll good but super oily cause it was in chicken juice (like a super condensed chicken fat that was straight fat after a night in the fridge), Shanghai style spareribs weren't really Shanghai style (like sweet and sour pork) and way too fatty. But the pork and vegetable rice was tasty and not too fatty or oily at all. Pan fried buns looked great, but not crispy bottomed.

Yelp
We came here for lunch to celebrate the arrival of my Mother-In-Law's cousin. After having ordered several dishes, we couldn't decide which soup we should order. We then asked the waitress if she could describe the difference of two soups listed on the menu. After listening to her descriptions, we decided on one of them. Only to find out later, the soup we ordered was exactly the same as the free soup they served at lunch. There's no pre warning nor any explanations from the waitress. I usually love fish, especially when it is steamed and recommended by the waitress. However, it was so fishy, I couldn't even swallow my bite. I was very disappointed.

Yelp
First time back here since before pandemic on a Sunday for lunch. We came as a group of 8. Fortunately called ahead or else the wait would be no fun. The food is very good in general just like before. I forgot to take many pictures since it was late and I was very hungry. My favorites of the day were Lion Head Soup, Seaweed Fish, and Shanghailander Pan Fried Buns. I would definitely order those again. The only bad thing about this place is the parking and possible waits. The service is not bad and there are many many yummy dishes. Keep it up Shanghailanders!

Yelp
Service - zero star. Food - four star. A lot of authentic Shanghai food. I took off one star because the fried buns do come with enough soups/ juices. Ambiance - Nice place.

Yelp
The worst white cut chicken I ever had. No taste at all. Good looking for sure but not worth it.

Yelp
Came with my husband and son on the Saturday before Mother's Day at 11:50am. Since we were walk-in without reservation it took us around 30 minutes to wait for a table. We had the Braised Meatball with Crab Roe (it came in a pot and had a lot of soup), KaiYang Loofah, and Dry Noodle in Pot. All were really good. Ambience and service were above average. It's now one of our favorite Shanghai restaurants in the region. Pricing was not cheap - with three relatively "simple" dishes (compared to some of the more complicated ones in their menu) and three bowls of rice, the lunch cost us more than $80. We will save this place for another special occasion in the future.

Yelp
Don't ever come this place if you are not big group, they will never give u a table, even take out takes forever. We got here around 5:30 since they don't have table so we ordered to go, took 2 hours. Management chaos.

Yelp
This can easily be one of the best Shanghainese restaurants in LA, great 烤籽鱼is Devine! overall it's really good, I strongly recommend it anyone who like Shanghainese cuisine :)

Yelp
The food is generally authentic with nice presentation but most of them is bit salty.

Yelp
My neighbor says this is the most authentic Shanghainese restaurant in the area so we had to try it out. We arrived here on a Wed night at 5pm -- the place was empty but quickly filled up. We ordered our staple Shanghainese food. Keep in mind though that Shanghainese food tends to be sweeter in general so it may just be my taste. - Special Fish Soup - sweet and sour, super yummy, would recommend the small for 3-5 ppl - Fish Filet with Seaweed - not as crunchy but each bite was full of fish - Shanghai Style Spare Ribs - too sweet, would not get next time - Three Cup Chicken Pot - too sweet and couldn't find the chicken - Sesame Balls in Rice Wine - nice cap to the meal, the osmanthus was a nice touch and not too overwhelming Parking: There's a parking lot with plenty of spaces but was filled up when we left at 6:30pm. They also have a huge sign warning customers not to leave valuables in car and have security walking around. Ambiance: Good for small to large tables and also multiple large banquet rooms available for reservation. Service: The host/waiter was a bit curt but he was actually nice so don't be thrown off by first impressions. Overall a luxurious Chinese food dining experience. The dishes were a hit or miss so may come back to try other ones. Currently standing at 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Food we ordered: Shanghailander Style Braised Pork with Brown Sauce, Squirrel Fish in Sweet & Sour Sauce, Shrimp, Vegetable Fried Rice, and a veggie dish I forgot the name of. Fish dish was good. Everything was pretty salty. Extremely rude service and loud environment with a party occurring in the open area. Holy moly. Waiter is an excellent sales person and quite aggressive when we were in the process of making our order. He convinced us to switch from regular white rice to a $20 fried rice dish that was completely unnecessary and way too salty to balance out the other dishes. Would never come back.

Yelp
The Pork Belly was soo yummy! The portion was very ideal. I would definitely go here again!

Yelp
Our experience here was a bit out of the ordinary and perhaps elevated above what a typical diner would enjoy, as it was a private party in a separate room, with a pre-set banquet menu. Presentation and plating were top notch and fitting of a fine dining establishment. It felt like classic Chinese cuisine reinterpreted with a more modern aesthetic. I wasn't blown away by the flavors, and perhaps that was simply because the dishes were not ones we would typically order and were catered towards the palate of a more senior generation. My favorite dishes were the poached chicken, Beijing duck, vegetable rice, and lobster. I typically love whole steamed fish but I found this particular variety to have far too many tiny needle like bones which were hard to pick out and avoid chewing.

Yelp
I visited here for a banquet meal and didn't personally order any of the dishes. The ambiance is slightly more fancy than casual and there is ample parking on site. The service was commendable and I felt the party was well attended by the wait staff. We were situated in a private dining space that was sufficiently isolated from the regular diners that it felt like we were the only ones there despite the regular dining room being completely full. The banquet meal itself was exquisite, with beautifully presented dishes with generous portions. The flavors were all top-notch and you can't go wrong with any of the dishes we enjoyed. This is a good place to consider for your next banquet, or just to enjoy some unique Shanghai dishes with friends.

Yelp
As a fellow Shanghainese person, this is my favorite place to get stable Shanghainese food. Everything here is consistently good, but some of my favorites are the Seaweed Fried Fish, Spare Ribs and Braised Pork! It's also a great place for special occasions or for larger parties as there's no shortage of large tables. I definitely recommend making a reservation or getting there early because it fills up quick!

Yelp
Great food. My wife and I have finally found an authentic Shanghai restaurant in Los Angeles!
