Mr Chow's Favorite Special Occasion Restaurants In LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"“Another restaurant which I’m always looking for is a Shanghainese restaurant, which is my hometown and I miss very much. It’s in the San Gabriel area. I think their chefs are directly from China. Therefore the cooking and the food are ‘pure.’ They serve all the classic Chinese dishes, my childhood dishes. Comfort food, but with great skill and authenticity.”" - arden shore

Google
We had a 10-people reunion gathering and it was a perfect excuse for us to enjoy this authentic and delicious Shanghainese restaurant. All of the dishes we ordered were perfectly made, and we enjoyed everything (there were a couple of vegetarians in the group so we ordered 3 vegetable dishes which was great. The overwhelming favorites were: the special Grilled beef short ribs ($48 so count it as 2 dishes), celery with Lily, and SH braised pork. The service was prompt, but we got the sense they didn’t prefer us to stay too long and catch up after we were done with our meal.

Google
Love coming here with my family for a consistently good traditional Chinese meal that isn’t hard to get a table at - highlights are the hunan fish head and (don’t @ me) kung pao chicken! Among a number of other delicious dishes

Google
Food portions were good, flavor and presentation was very good and the service was fast. Ordered salted mixed rice, Shanhhai style pancake, veggie in sesame oil, fish filet with sea weed, chicken with sesame sosa, sing qua with dry shrimps and sesame rice ball in wine.

Don’t park your car in the plaza. multiple break-ins during broad daylight while we had dinner. Food is average. Risk is extremely high. No security cameras on the premises.

Google
Food was surprisingly good and reasonably priced. Old school chinese vibe with a touch of class. Great for big groups.

Google
The food here is very good—authentic flavors that really satisfy! However, the service needs improvement. After we were seated, we felt ignored for a while, which took away from our experience. The atmosphere is similar to many Chinese restaurants, but the restrooms could be cleaner.

Google
Surprise good taste on most of dishes. You must try their Crab with rice cake. A++

Google
Shanghainese spot good for big groups. Came here for lunch in a group of 6. We were there at 11am (the opening) and were able to get a table immediately. The food is authentic and my boyfriend, who had never tried Shanghainese food prior to this, really enjoyed it. The best dishes in my opinion were the Shanghainese shu mai (which comes with rice inside) as well as the xiao long bao. Free easy parking. Credit cards accepted. They do serve alcohol.

Yelp
Food tastes good. Nice Chinese comfort meal. Service people are friendly and nice. It's a good friendly atmosphere inside the restaurant with families eating at various tables. The price is a little higher than average but it has good presentation. Would recommend if you need to bring groups out for a meal

Yelp
This is probably my favorite Shanghainese restaurant in town. It's a bit pricier than regular Chinese restaurants, but the food is authentic and delicious and the decor is more upscale. The service is better than your average Chinese joint but the bar is low so... Dishes I love here: crispy fish w. Sweet sour sauce, pork belly in brown sauce, and sweet lotus Make sure you come as a group because some portions are quite large and are meant for sharing.

Yelp

Yelp
I was a little skeptical at first when I saw the reviews for this place, and though I agree with some of the comments I think this place is a solid place for authentic Shanghai cuisine. As someone who has been to and eaten food in Shanghai, this place is about as close as you can get to authentic Shanghainese food. First the bad. Service. We came on a Saturday lunch and were seated right away. We then sat there for at least ten minutes without anyone coming to ask about drinks or talk about the menu. Indeed, we had to flag someone down (after multiple attempts in doing so) before we got any service. However, after that, the service was really good (i.e. ordering food forced the staff to come by the table so you can then ask for other things you may need). Now the good. There was plenty of parking outside. There was a good amount of seating inside. The overall cleanliness of the restaurant and bathrooms were good. Now the best. The food. Everything we ordered was delicious! We order a medley of foods including XLB, pan fried buns, fried rice, string beans, egg plant, pork belly, and fish fillet. The fried rice was surprisingly my favorite due to the flavor and seasoning. The pork belly was good, but I didn't eat too much of it because it was pretty fatty. The fish was really good too due to its tenderness. Green beans and eggplant were good and can't go wrong with these classics. The XLB was juicy and delicious. The pan fried buns were piping hot and super juicy as well. For all this tho it was pretty pricey but well worth it for authentic Shanghainese food!

Yelp
This place is perfect. Wonderful spot for meeting with friends or family or coworkers.

Yelp
Such a nice spot to bring the parents! Portions are really generous -- the soup alone is huge and could easily feed 10 people. The food tastes great too, which makes it a perfect choice for family gatherings.

Yelp
Eel (鱔糊) tasted very different than that offered at the Arcadia location, in a bad way lol. Not sure if it was a one-off, but it tasted like they accidentally poured an entire bottle of rice wine in there lol. The rice with bok choy (菜飯) tasted fine, had 3 bowls. But damn this place has become so expensive... overpriced. Food isn't terrible, and they're still very much authentic, but nah not worth what you paid for.

Yelp
Came in with family and it wasn't very crowded. Service was okay, we were ignored after being seated. But the dishes rolled out quickly after putting our orders in. We ordered a whole live fish and that was the best dish of our meal. The fish was so tender and the flavor was great and balanced. This dish came at a higher price point, but thankfully was prepared well. The remaining dishes were alright; the flavors on the sauteed eel were good, but admittedly pretty oily. The jellyfish with vinegar was refreshing but was a bit sweet. The luffa with dry shrimp had perfect sticky texture and well seasoned, but the vegetable itself was bitter. Ambiance felt casual and seemed to have a good setup for larger groups. Parking was convenient as they are in a large plaza too which is nice.

Yelp
Can't really get better Shanghainese food around here -- their food is incredible and authentic. They do tend to be on the pricier end for some of their dishes but the portions sizes make up for it. The place can get busy, so the wait times can get a little heavy if you go on a weekend evening without a reservation but otherwise, the place is amazing!

Yelp
Nice culinary taste Shanghai Chinese restaurant. All courses beautifully presented. Nice courteous service and authentic Shanghai interior decoration. Pricing has gone up $$$

Yelp
Nice formal Chinese Shanghainese dining. It's on the fancier side. They have really good Shanghai Xiao long bao. Sometimes I just get a few orders to go. Kids love it. They have fancy dishes too: Crab. Shimp etc.

Yelp
Had dinner here with the family around Lunar New Year. The food was delicious except the rice from the veggie pork rice was a bit undercooked. Service was good even though the place was packed. The tables and chairs are placed so close to each other which very little space to walk round as well and bring seated comfortably. I know they want to maximize the space, but consider using less bulkier chairs might help a bit.
google avatar

Yelp
Upon entering this Shanghai Cuisine you will notice the upscale decor not typical of a Chinese Restaurant. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food were all delicious but I prefer to enjoy each dish slowly as they are served. I noticed they serve all the dishes very quickly thus not giving me enough time to enjoy and savor the taste of every dish. Will definitely come back and highly recommend!

Yelp
Very authentic Shanghainese cuisine, drunken chicken, braised duck, braised pork, sugar lotus root, eel shreds, all very classic, very satisfying, I have been there twice with my parents-in-law, husband, and sister, and I eat very full every time

Yelp
Came here around 6-7 ish. Parking was rly crowded and rly hard to find but we got lucky. Inside was busy i think most to all tables were full. Overall food was decent. We tried a bunch of things, fried fish, pork belly, soup dumplings, pan fried dumplings, and some other stuff idrk what they were LOL. But it was good. I honestly dont have much complains about the food except that it was definitely on the pricey side. Idk how much everything was bc the menu was kinda hard to read and i didnt know what was what lol. Service was fine, most spoke chinese but im pretty sure they know some english.

Yelp
Chinese New Year's Day 2-10-2024. Open for dinner 5pm. No reservation and surprisingly a short waitlist. We arrived 6:30 and quickly got seated in a corner booth with a nice view of the elegant dining room. Ordered Sweet sour whole fish, loofa green gourd with dried shrimp, shiao-long-bao dumpling, wine chicken -- all very good except the fish was a bit too sweet and saucy; the fish meat itself was fresh, crispy and, best of all, boneless; it goes great with jasmine rice. The Chrysanthemum tea we ordered was among the most fragrant, refreshing I have ever tasted. Excellent attentive waitstaff. The dining room seemed to turn over relatively quickly every 50 minutes or so, when we left two hours later, there was still no line.

Yelp
Decent shanghainese food, but I reallllly dislike eating here. The service is always lacking and it's always an unpleasant experience.
google avatar

Jane K.

Yelp
Came here on a Wednesday noon for company lunch. I would say the food here is alright, can be a bit salty and heavy, but tastes way better than other Shanghai places (namely the place that calls themselves no.1). Service was alright. Nobody was rude. The environment was pretty much like every other Chinese restaurant.

Yelp
Its my 2nd time dining at Shanghailander recently. The food was great , and the prices are fairly reasonable considering today's economy. I remember coming here years ago and thinking the prices were outrageous but now it's really not that bad. I think it's very authentic Shanghainese food and I would definitely come more often. I highly recommend trying the Shanghailander Style Braised Pork in Brown Sauce, Fish Fillet with Seaweed and Sesame rice ball in wine soup.

Yelp
**July 2023: Saturday Evening Visit** I've been here a number of times with my parents and family friends and am surprised that I hadn't written a review yet. My family usually comes here whenever there's a celebration and/or if my family wants to host or attend a a large group gathering. They have ample tables for large groups and on this most recent visit we were in a private room. I think we had a party of 14. There were many cold appetizer dishes as well as large entrees to feed our party. I didn't dislike anything and felt that all the dishes tasted authentic, but had elevated presentation. There had seafood, meat dishes, vegetables, and dessert (rice ball wine soup). The service is standard Chinese restaurant style for banquets. They change out your plate every few courses, but you'll need to pour your own hot tea. Overall, I enjoyed it and will continue to go back whenever there's a call for a big group gathering.

Yelp
A classic Shanghainese restaurant serving very authentic Shanghainese cuisine. They are one of the few restaurants that has 2 private rooms besides the common dining area if you want to host a small private gathering. Overall taste is delicious but their prices are getting more and more expensive.... Definitely a 3 dollar sign restaurant. Every time I come, I enjoy their traditional Shanghainese appetizers like glutinous tofu with wood ear mushrooms, jelly fish with cucumber, fried barracuda. And entree wise, their shrimp and crab dishes are always delicious. The pork dishes can be a hit and miss. Overall, if you are looking for a traditional Shanghainese restaurant with great food presentation, come here. There's in lot parking (although it can be super packed) and it is a family friendly restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
I read many complain about service but my experience is pretty good. Other Shanghainese friends really like here, and they have been here many times. Shrimp is pretty good but I don't really into Shanghailander Style Braised Pork in Brown Sauce, very greasy.

Yelp
Never knew what this place was but happened to come here for an extended family event. We had 15 in our party and got a private room which fit up to 15 so it was perfect. The room was actually split in half with a curtain into two large table spaces but we never noticed the other group on the other side. Getting the room itself required a minimum charge of $550 so we ordered a ton. Some of the portions looked small but they just kept on coming. The large glass lazy Susan threatened to topple at first when we had a heavy water pitcher and tea pot all on one side. But once it was laden with a banquet's worth of food, it was fine. Food was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. Some were familiar Chinese food staples, others were much more unique. I couldn't take many pictures because it was a put-your-phone-away kind of meal. Here's the run down of what I remember on the table. These aren't the official names but close enough. There wasn't anything anyone disliked. The entire family was extremely pleased. Herbs and bean curd Pork jelly pâté Cold bean curd (gluten thingy) Duck Filet mignon cubes Steamed chicken Tofu in black bean sauce Bean curd soup x2 Veggie rice x2 Braised pork belly x2 Sweet and sour whole fish Fried seaweed fish x2 Sautéed and fried shrimp duo Peking pork (kinda like a dark red sweet and sour) Sesame pork sun bread (da bing) Meatball and cabbage vermicelli soup Sticky rice siu mai Fried sesame pork buns Fried green beans Radish buns with ham Shrimp paste with eggplant Bamboo stir fry Some dish with mini eels! Onchoy Service was fast and they kept drink refills coming. Our plates were also changed halfway. Each food item arrived with an announcement of the dish name as well as a sesame oil disclaimer since one of us had allergies. My husband and I are already looking forward to coming back. I'll take proper photos then.

Yelp
Food quality has decreased dramatically after the COVID. Last time we went, almost all the dishes are not good. Prices have been unreasonable as well.
google avatar

Guangbin Z.

Yelp
This place is a traditional authentic Chinese restaurant. The chef has over 20 years experience of cooking. Everything tastes awesome. The rate is 3.1 something means really good Chinese food, not like those American Chinese food restaurants.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
We had a big family dinner in one of the private rooms and we were all very happy with the overall experience and dishes. The restaurant is newer, clean and bright. Nice touch with cloth hand towels in restrooms (may be only during holidays?). Service was very good, attentive and responsive. They cleared our eating plates several times for clean plates. We had 12 dishes total including a peking duck and whole stir-fried lobster. The dishes all were very well made. The lobster, shrimp and fish were cooked perfectly, just cooked enough so they were still delicate and not over-cooked. The soup was well balanced. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. A+

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for 10+ years and I still forward to eating here whenever I visit home. Their dongpuo rou is always a hit for me - it's tender and decadent with the just right amount of savory sweetness. Their plethora of Shanghainese dishes not disappoints too. Last but not least, their ba bao fan and tang yuan are stellar desserts to wrap up a meal. Shout out to Carey and Judy for always hooking it up and providing the best service!

Yelp
Very delicious & good service. My go to restaurant for Shanghainese food. 很正宗的上海美食、每道菜都很經典!
google avatar

Alexandra D.

Yelp
I've been here a few times with co workers and the food never disappoints! The soybean leaves are out of this world along with the radishes and sweet fish. Some of my favorite dishes. Portion sizes are family style so just a few items will do. The staff is always attentive and great. I highly recommend

Yelp
Our favorite Chinese restaurant in all of LA County. So delicious! It's just a little far to get to is the only down side
google avatar

Yelp
The interior really bring you back to Asia. Food was good. Definitely come here with a group of people so that each person can order a dish and the table can share family style. Huge parking lot in the plaza so dont worry about not being to find parking.

Yelp
One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the area! We are a regular here with my family and the food is consistently good. I especially love their eggplant with shrimp paste, lion's head meatball soup, braised pork belly, and lobster with noodles. Kari and Judy always take care of us and the service is great all around. If you're looking for an authentic Chinese restaurant to impress your guests, look no further!

Yelp
Always my top choice when I have a craving for a family-style meal. Here are some of my recommended dishes. The fish head soup pot is a must-have. The fish is VERY fresh, and the soup flavored is delicious. There are a lot of other items inside the soup, such as bamboo shoots, mushrooms, napa, and thick glass noodles. The fried seaweed fish stick is yummy. Something you must order when you come out to a good Shanghai restaurant. All the vegetable dishes are good also. They cook it well, even if it is just plain stir fry. The deserts are all VERY good. My favorite is the Osamathus sesame balls soup. We always enjoy it at the end of the meal. The service is amicable and quick. No complaint. The price is very reasonable and fair compared to many other Chinese restaurants.

Lan Gloria X.

Yelp
Tastes like authentic Shanghai Cuisine, tasty,,delicious, and remind me of Shanghai because the restaurant is decorated with stylish artworks, Huangbao Cart, been there around 5 times, always have great experiences.
google avatar

Yvonne W.

Yelp
This is my new favorite Shanghai style restaurant! Soup was very flavorful, spare rib was marinated perfectly but not too sweet, and the Chinese spinach was stir-fried perfectly. Mixed rice was well balanced, I could eat this by itself. Sesame rice ball in wine was exactly how I expected, not sour like other places'. Even the jasmine tea tasted like real jasmine tea! We were very impressed with the great quality of food and their service. We were also very pleased to see the bill at the end of the meal. Price is very reasonable! I can't wait to come back to try other dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
Great taste and quality food. Not busy during weekday lunch time. Service is fast. The interior is nicely decorated.

Yelp
Came here for my mom's bday dinner. We arrived around 5:30 pm on a Saturday and were seated promptly for a group of 7. I didn't have high hopes for this place based on the rating but was pleasantly surprised! Everything was tasty and not overly salty. The only thing was the braised pork - it was good but had a noticeable burnt taste. Not sure if it's intended to be like that. The time we left was the place was packed and had a wait.
google avatar

Yimo M.

Yelp
Always good as usual! served quickly, taste great, Highly recommend the egg yolk meat ball, always my favorite.

Ken L.

Yelp
A $70 fish dish only has a huge fish head with little meat but covered with fried oily flours and over-flavored sugary source. Looked amazing, but tasted awful. You needed to take Tums to go with it. The Shanghai ribs were so poorly done that I had to bite my tooth and nail to get the meat out. We had several other dishes, none of them were that good either. I am happy to see the restaurant survived covid. But the food quality has gone down tremendously over the years. The service was also slow and non-attentative at minimum: took a long time to get tea to the table, even though it was not that busy. For the quality of the food and service we received, the restaurant is way overpriced. And the food is not that Shanghai-authentic anymore. For the money we spent there, we felt we would have been much happier at In-and-Out for 10th of the cost. Never go back again.
google avatar

Ray W.

Yelp
Food, service and ambience were great. I love the decor in the front. The menu selection was great. The food was overall a 9 out of 10. l really enjoyed my time here.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
I've lived in Shanghai for a few months and don't think I've had better Shanghainese food than this. The standout of the night was the rice cake with crab. While pricey ($68 MP), the flavor of the crab was infused into every bite and so, so delicious. There is a cheaper option to omit crab, and the soft, chewy rice cakes are fabulous on their own as well. The pork belly was delicious but really fatty, and I couldn't bring myself to eat more than a few pieces without feeling sick. Another dish I really enjoyed was the cellophane noodles with crab- the rich seafood flavor was so unique. I wouldn't order the XLB again, as they were pretty average and can be easily found anywhere in the SGV. Lastly, we did find a dead bug in the soup and had to send it back. They immediately offered to take it off our check, which I really appreciated.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here on a random dinner out with family and they had a lot of fun dishes on the menu that were a pleasant surprise. I particularly enjoyed the eight treasure glutinous rice and the sweet and sour squirrel fish. All of the food was tasty and the service was normal, as per usual. My family and I haven't had a hankering to return since going but I think it's only a matter of time before we decide to return to this restaurant. Solid place for a Chinese family dinner!
google avatar

Elisa H.

Yelp
Came here to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday. We made a reservation in advance for a party of 7. Haven't been to this place in years and was really excited to dine here. Upon arriving, we were seated in a private room by the front of the restaurant. Halfway through our meal, a server comes to tell us that we were seated at the wrong table and needed to move us. We were in the middle of our dinner! The food here was not how I remembered. The meat dishes were way too sweet, even when paired with white rice. The veggies were bland. The pork and veggie soup tasted like they just boiled water and added the content. I grew up eating authentic Shanghainese food from my mothers cooking and this was far from standard. This was not the quality as it used it. I am thoroughly disappointed.

Soya Q.

Yelp
Had the worst experience here today even though we reserved private room for big party. It has been 45 mins since we ordered and we barely have any items on the table. Servers won't come to service and cashier in the front has a bad attitude. Food is mediocre for waiting that long just to have a cold chicken dish. Would never come back. What a disappointing experience since our family has been coming here for so many times. Also restaurant has strong smell of cleaning chemical. Will never come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Came back here after four years absence. Good to see the place is crowded and standards upheld.

Yelp
had company dinner here 2 wkds ago + i tried this place a handful of times in a span of 10 yrs but have never initiated coming none of their dishes stand out 2 me & this last visit, we got 2 connecting VIP rooms, hairs on plates, tables, table cloth had holes, there were tiny bugs flyin around + ironically, head of our company got a ticket 4 not havin front car plate on her bentley; whom da heck cites violation in a parking lot of 99-RANCH :/
