Where to Eat in San Diego During a Weekend Away | Eater

"At Shank & Bone, pho takes center stage — more than a dozen varieties are available, including a vegan option. The menu straddles the line between classic and modern Vietnamese cuisine, including traditional favorites like gỏi cuốn (spring rolls filled with shrimp and pork or veggies) phở cuốn rice noodle rolls are plump with grilled ginger beef, fresh basil, mint and bean sprouts, and there is a selection of rice plates, bún bowls, and bánh mì. Don’t sleep on the dinner specialties either — bánh xèo tacos are mini viet savory crepes in taco form, stuffed with sautéed pork, shrimp, bean sprouts, jicama, and fresh mint in a light, airy coconut turmeric shell, while phở fries are loaded with chopped brisket, shank, and flank, sautéed with garlic, then topped with Thai basil, cilantro, onions, bean sprouts, and hoisin sauce. Beverages include sixteen taps of local beer and a short list of craft cocktails, sake, and wine." - Mary Beth Abate

Modern and Classic Vietnamese Dishes Move Into North Park | Eater San Diego

"On University Avenue in North Park I found a well-designed, contemporary Vietnamese eatery created by Han Tran and Jay Choy (who run the 14-year-old Ebisu Sushi) with partners Lam Nguyen and Phuc Vo, showcasing traditional Vietnamese cuisine and ingredients. Under a wall-sized Shepard Fairey 'Revolution Girl' print (displayed with the artist’s permission) and amid vintage motorbikes and an antique map of former Saigon, the restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner, with brunch and happy hour to follow. Their signature pho uses a long-simmered bone broth made fresh daily and comes loaded with beef shank, oxtail, eye of round, flank, brisket and bone marrow; there’s also a surf-and-turf version with lobster and filet mignon, an all-seafood bowl, plus rich chicken and fully vegan broth alternatives. Classic offerings include Vietnamese baguette sandwiches, vermicelli rice noodle salad bowls, rice plates with grilled meats and bo kho (Vietnamese beef stew), while more modern innovations range from beef carpaccio with Vietnamese vinaigrette, crushed peanuts, fresh mint and watercress to banh mi–inspired crostini topped with bone marrow and taco-sized banh xeo stuffed with pork, shrimp, bean sprouts, jicama and fresh mint. The drinks program highlights hyper-local craft beer (mostly brewed in North Park), locally-made sake on tap, craft wine coolers and soju-based cocktails." - Candice Woo

Google
10/10. We had the sandwich and cold noodle salad. Both were exceptional and priced well. Cannot comment on any broth however but most reviews say it’s great. Reasonably priced glass of wine. Excellent service. Fun environment. We will be back!

Google
This is a great place to grab some noodles. They have a very customizable menu They do have a bar as well as soft drinks or hot tea. There are plenty of seats even if you go on a weekday. The servers were very kind and had great customer service. What I like about the soft drinks was it says it on the menu free refills and one of the waiters did get me a repo soda also they give you free water. My soup was very delicious and comes in a big bowl. You do have choices of your noodles of course I choose more of the traditional noodles but you can choose different noodles depending on your taste. Because this is in North Park I would highly recommend paying money to park in the parking l garage otherwise you'll be hunting for parking forever. The only negative I could think of for this restaurant would be their prices. But being a small business and this economy I was expecting to pay more than normal for this type of food.

Google
A Vietnamese Culinary Gem in North Park! Highly recommend their signature Bone Marrow Phở,The broth is rich and deeply flavorful, with the melted marrow adding a luxurious depth. Paired with wide rice noodles and fresh herbs, it's absolutely soul-satisfying! The restaurant features a modern industrial vibe with retro touches, creating a relaxed atmosphere perfect for casual hangouts with friends. We visited on a weekend evening--it was quite busy, and we waited about 30 minutes, so I'd recommend arriving early or visiting on a weekday. If you love creative Vietnamese cuisine, this is a must-visit spot in San Diego!Generous portions, authentic flavors, and yes--the bones are so good to gnaw on!

Craving some Vietnamese food? Definitely hit up this spot in North Park. You instantly will be drawn in by the vibes this place gives. I felt like I was transported into Vietnam with the aesthethic. I always judge a Vietnamese spot by its broth. And let me tell you, it’s delicious. Also I’m loving the fresh lettuce wraps they offer. The staff is very friendly and help you with what’s best on the menu to order. I can’t wait to go back!

Google
Honestly my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in San Diego (and possibly the continental US haha). They're pho s+b with the oxtail and bone marrow is an explosion of flavor. Their vermicelli with everything on it is so fresh and delicious! 10/10 vibe, food, and staff!

Google
The Best Pho in North Park and easily a contender for Top 3 Best Pho spots in San Diego. I especially love their variety of cocktails and non-pho options (as seen by the Bahn Mi pictured here). The pho itself is bit pricier than most spots, but I promise you it won’t cost you an Arm, Leg, Shank, or Bone and is made up for by the DELIGHTFUL price on Bahn Mi!

Google
The BEST pho I ever had. Got the oxtail pho. The soup is so flavorful. Amazing!

Google
Came here for a casual birthday dinner with my best friend and it was the best pho either of us have ever had! The broth is insanely delicious and if that was all they served, I would still come back. 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
No this place is not a steakhouse. No it's not a butcher shop either. I was surprised that this was in fact a Vietnamese spot. Located in North Park, they specialize in pho and also other traditional Vietnamese dish. I came here and ordered the braised caramelized cat fish with rice and sweet/sour prawn soup. This was honestly one of the tastiest fish I've had! Super fresh, fatty, and tender. The meat just melts in your mouth. The prawn soup was also packed with flavor. Each sip just makes you want to come back and take another sip. Overall, it was a very comforting meal and reflects traditional Vietnamese cuisine. The ambiance is also quite vibrant and modernized. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. The servers were very attentive and came to check up on me multiple times. Unfortunately given that this place is at North Park, parking is near impossible. It's probably better to park in one of the nearby residential street and just walk over.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me by a friend and it was pretty yummy! We were greeted and seated pretty quickly upon arrival. The staff is friendly and answered our questions about the menu and their recommendations. We ordered the chicken egg rolls, filet mignon pho, and brisket pho. All of the food was delicious and very filling. The broth and traditional noodles tasted different to me than other pho places I've been to, but it was still delightful nonetheless. The ambiance of the place was pretty casual and noise levels weren't too bad. It was a nice spot to catch up with my friend I hadn't seen for some time. I would definitely come back here again, it's just parking can be a struggle since it's North Park and often busy with limited street parking.

Yelp
I met up with a friend for dinner who's the biggest pho fan at Shank & Bone. Since it had just started raining, it was perfect to warm up with some soup. I ordered the springs rolls and egg rolls for us to share. The veggie egg rolls were delicious and so were the shrimp and pork spring rolls. The peanut sauce for the springs rolls was perfect. I ordered the filet mignon pho and it was so good and extremely hot. I opted for the rice noodles instead of their house made noodles. My friend mentioned the rice noodles hold up better the next day. I ended up having to take the rest to go but it was the perfect rainy day meal!

Yelp
If the catfish special is still there we highly recommend it. It was such a good dish. The signature pho is solid. Big bowl and filling. The staff are super friendly too. Everything is solid in my opinion, but nothing blows us out of the water.

Yelp
Shank & Bone is the restaurant that feels like it's made by the new generation for the new generation, but still rooted in traditional flavors. Considering you have the more OG pho spots nearby in City Heights, S&B brings a more inviting and modern ambiance. The Beef Carpaccio was a really good starter. I love the dipping sauce and having a bite with the meat/watercress was excellent. I got the Signature Pho S&B which basically comes with the most amount and variety of meat. This was the first time that I've had broth brought and poured tableside which I found to be interesting. But I will say the the flavors of the broth were definitely good. Comforting and delicious. Aside from the typical cuts of meat, the oxtail was standout and very easy to eat. The bone marrow was lacking in that the bone was only half-filled with marrow. Between the upcharge in price for these other more 'premium' meats, I definitely don't think it's worth it and I would just stick a Pho Tai or Pho Filet Mignon.

Yelp
Some place new for us to try. Very trendy. We parked kinda far and walked through a dark alley with murals. I enjoyed the taste of their broth. Interior is very uncluttered but where beautiful clientele come to have pho. Their iced coffee was good and strong I'm woke awake now.

Yelp
Cute Viet spot in North Park! The menu feels more modernized but still authentic. I enjoyed the banh xeo tacos, they were fun to eat and loaded with shrimp, pork and bean sprouts! I liked that they included lettuce to pair it with, but i wish they were crispier and it was kinda messy to eat them lol but that's expected of banh xeo. Also had the pho-rench dip banh mi which was a little too rich for me, but very flavorful and nice to dip with the pho broth on the side. Wasn't too busy when we came for lunch on a weekday holiday. I would come back to try their other dishes!

Yelp
We absolutely love this place especially their bone marrow sandwich. The servers are very attentive and the ambience is relaxing, with R&B music and a fun vibe. A nice place to come with friends, on a date or sit solo and people watch. There are parking structures nearby or street parking.

Yelp
traditional vietnamese food with a twist in a modern, colorful setting. i've been here twice and i'm a fan! the food is delicious, the ambiance pays homage to the motherland and the service is top-tier. -phở Khô dry phở - a new take on a beloved classic. it reminds me of hu tieu where the a side of broth accompanies the bowl of noodles. you can choose to sip the broth while eating the noodles or add the broth to the noodles to loosen it up a little. -Bánh Xèo Tacos mini banh xeo, which is like a savory turmeric crepe. -Bánh Hỏi Chạo Tôm one of my all time favorite viet dishes. it's woven criss-cross vermicelli noodles with sugarcane shrimp, a side of veggies and that notorious fish sauce.

Yelp
Came when they opened at noon for lunch and ordered the following: - Roasted Bone Marrow - I thought 3 pieces of bread wasn't going to be enough, but there was very little marrow and it probably could've fit on one slice - Beef carpaccio - delicious, I think it would've been better if the meat was cut in smaller pieces so you're not left with a giant chewy piece - Scallops - a little too much oil, but good otherwise. Wasn't sure about the carrot/daikon mixture - Pho Tai - they brought the bowl to the table and then poured the broth in from a pitcher (interesting!). Went with the flat noodles, but it was a little too soft for me. Wished there was more leafy herbs to add. Service was good. There wasn't many parties since it was early, but they were quick to clean up our table... I think I tried everything I wanted so not sure I'd be quick to return, but it was a good visit overall!

Yelp
Stopped in yesterday for a quick snack. Cute spacious restaurant with both indoor & outdoor patio seating directly across from the North Park sign. Cheap and safe parking available directly across the street in a parking structure. We usually order pho from here but on a hot day like yesterday we just wanted a small snack. Ended up ordering their bone marrow crostinis, beef carpaccio, and grilled pork banh mi. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive per usual! Flavors were authentic and delicious! Thanks S&B for bringing genuine Vietnamese dishes to North Park! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Looking for a solid Vietnamese spot in North Park? Give Shank & Bone a try! I've visited a spot a handful of times and have had a delicious meal every time! I've yet to try their signature pho, but have heard MANY great things about it from friends and fellow Yelp reviewers. This time around, I ordered the Beef Shank Bahn Mi special, which included a side of bone broth jus. Oh my GOSH did this hit the spot!! The jus was so tasty, I could drink it on its own! I love how well it complimented the sandwich. The bread was perfectly crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside and the sandwich itself was well balanced, with perfect amount of beef and crunchy veggies. The modern, industrial decor with the plentiful daylight and spacious seating makes for an enjoyable ambience. And the service, as always, is exceptional. SOLID food, wonderful staff, and an overall delicious dining experience! I highly recommend this spot to everyone looking for a great eatery!

Yelp
A modern fusion Vietnamese spot and they do it well! We came on a weekday holiday around 12:30 pm and it wasn't too busy. A large spacious open air interior with lots of tables. We ordered the banh xeo tacos and pho-rench dip banh mi and I surprisingly enjoyed both! The banh xeo tacos were nicely flavorful, filled with fresh ingredients, and the shell was lightly crispy. I do wish the shell was thicker and crispier as the fillings were heavy and everything fell apart so it was messy to eat. The side of lettuce and pickled veggies was nice and the fish sauce wasn't too strong or sour. The pho-rench dip banh mi was my favorite dish as all the flavors went well together and tasted like authentic Viet flavors. The meat was savory, juicy and plentiful. The baguette bread was good and crispy and the pho broth was hearty and enhanced the sandwich flavors when dipped. The two of us shared the two dishes and were stuffed.

Yelp
I ordered through Uber Eats and the Pho broth was piping hot still when delivered. I really liked their pho bowl and the portion was large enough for me to have leftovers. I ordered a large broth to go with it which wasn't needed they provided plenty of broth. The rice noodle rolls were decent but the peanut sauce really made that dish. I think I may have found my new go to Pho place.

Yelp
Pretty chill lil viet spot, nothing to really write home about but the food was overall good. The egg rolls were a lil small but well made and very crispy. Shoutout the wings though, those were super buss. Service was also good, my water was always filled :)

Yelp
Vietnamese restaurant/ Café located in the busy area of North Park and has a modern feel to it both in decor and menu. The space is really cool. It feels really sleek with some nostalgic type pieces. Came here with a few of my cousins when we were visiting the area and honestly, I was a little skeptical especially with that ampersand in the name, but we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Also note that our visit was a couple years ago, so maybe it's slightly changed. I'm not sure. For starters, I ordered a drink called the Old Pho-sioned. To share, we ordered items like the beef carpaccio and the banh xeo tacos. These dishes were beautifully plated, and the Vietnamese flavors were on point. For myself, I ordered the signature pho with bone marrow. They bring a kettle with the hot broth and pour it into your bowl at your table. Is the pomp in circumstance necessary? Probably not, but is it appreciated? Absolutely! Overall, just a really fun café with delicious Vietnamese food with some fun and creative modern takes.

Yelp
Cute and fun ambiance, indoor and outdoor seating available. TVs inside always mystify me as they take away from charm, but no big deal. Service is nice and helpful, and each person we dealt with pleasant and sweet. Great beers on draft! We got the wings, delicious, huge, very sweet and crunchy. Big appetizer and tasty, but very messy! The side broth, absolutely delicious, great depth of flavor, and lots to it, cannot wait to come back for a big bowl of pho. We got the bun bowl with shrimp and grilled pork, this was the favorite, pork was juicy and plentiful, shrimp perfectly done, bun bowl was nice and big, the noc Cham, a little mild and light on lime but still very good. Veggies were fresh and crunchy, super good. Can you get cheaper pho and options elsewhere, yes obviously, will it be as good? No!!! So annoying to me that people are always like "you can get it cheaper" of course you can, so just go somewhere cheaper and stop complaining about the great food served here! Quality is not cheap, and this is high quality protein, and veggies with a broth that takes time! Can't wait to come back soon!!!! Delicious!!!
google avatar

Leo V.

Yelp
Modern place with an outdoor feel with great service. The last time I was here, I ate their combination and it was good. This time I got their special Smoked Wagyu Picanha. I gotta say, the added smoke to the pho was a great addition. Definitely a must try.
google avatar

Yelp
Good not the best, and definitely on the pricier side. They decorated very cute and I loved the hanging red envelopes for lunar new year! We ordered the oxtail pho, I was surprised at how much oxtail we received! It made the price a little more justifiable, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here for it. The Saigon chicken wings were so crispy and flavorful. The smell was definitely stronger than the taste, but it was still delicious. The spring roll rice paper wrapper ripped apart on the way home. There doesn't really seem to be communication between the staff. We ordered the same pho but one flat noodle and one regular noodle. I'm assuming the server who brought out our pho didn't know there were different noodles ordered for each and we didn't think to ask which bowl was which since they were just handed to us. We ended up getting each other's bowl but didn't notice until after we put the toppings in. Not a huge deal, but definitely a small miscommunication between everyone (including us for not verifying). Additionally, when we were ordering in the beginning I had mentioned I wanted some spring rolls to go and on a separate check. When it came time to pay, everything was all on one check and the server seemed taken back that I asked for the spring rolls to be on a separate check. Again, not a big deal, but definitely made a difference in our experience.

Yelp
My favorite pho spot in San Diego. I love that they bring out the pho bowl and pour hot broth from a container as they serve your bowl. I personally prefer it over pho Duyen!
google avatar

Griffin C.

Yelp
I wish they had one of these closer to where i live. Had an amazing date night here before a concert at the observatory. Spots like this make north park sd the charmfest that it is. Banh mi was fire and reasonable and the apple pie cider was so uniquely autumnal. Mango mate was gas 2. Bless up shank y bone.
google avatar

Adriana A.

Yelp
My order was the tofu pho with beef broth: 10/10 This place serves up your pho without the broth just before they walk over with a metal carafe that has your broth of choice. Their broth is steaming hot and packed with flavor! The flavor from the beef broth, along with the heap of veggies and meat, made this one of my favorite pho spots in town. The portion is generous here!
google avatar

Yelp
As an avid lover of Vietnamese food, my expectations for Shank & Bone were high. I went on a week day during lunch time and although it was busy, I liked the big open space and multiple seating options that they had, and quickly found a seat. They had a special of a brisket bahn mi sandwich with a bone marrow with chimichurri, and I devoured everything and left no crumbs. It was delicious. I'll try the pho next time because I was so full that I didn't get to try it. But everything was really good and I'm excited to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
This was my niece's pick. They love it and it is close to her apartment. No reservation taken, so we were fortunate to arrive just before the rush. Seating is tight with tables very close to one another. Being from NY, we are lucky to have many Pho restaurant options. The food here was middle of the road with the best exception of my catfish dish. The spring rolls with shrimp were just ok but the dipping sauce elevated it. 5 in our party, no alcohol. One starter, the chicken wings was a hit at the table. $250
google avatar

Yelp
Shank & Bone is serving up some delicious Vietnamese cuisine in the North Park area! To get here, there is street parking all around the area. Wifey and I came for lunch right when they opened and were seated immediately upon arrival. Inside, they have some amazing Vietnamese inspired decor and a spacious setup consisting of about 12-15 tables. As for their menu, they have an awesome selection of appetizers, pho, banh mi, rice, vermicelli, and speciality dishes to choose from. We opted to try the Banh Xeo Tacos, Brisket & Bone Marrow Banh Mi, and the Signature Pho. Everything we had was absolutely delicious with generous portion sizes and elevated yet authentic flavors. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here. All of the staff are very friendly, welcoming, and attentive. We will definitely be back for another delicious meal next time we are in the area. Shank & Bone is Viet gang approved!

Yelp
Vibrant spot with fun interior decor, pho broth is missing depth This is honestly a really fun spot to have a bite with friends. The interior is bold and modern, and has lots of interesting decor pieces (hello, motorcycle??). I appreciate that the the food is on the more classic side, which helps keeps things familiar and comforting I was really excited to try the signature pho, which included highlights like bone marrow, and oxtail - super unique touches! Broth was poured table side for great presentation points. Meat was generous. But honestly, the broth, which makes or breaks a pho, was a slight let down. It's flavour was not rich enough against all the wonderful meats. For something to be called a signature dish, and to have its cooking time flaunted, I expected more
google avatar

Yelp
We tried this at taste of north park and loved the sample, so I was excited to finally have the full dining experience. I was a party of 2 walk in early on a Friday night and it was already decently busy though we got a table no problem. Menus were QR codes unless you requested a physical menu - I personally prefer physical menus so it was nice to still have that option. The pho broth was good but you do have to add veggies, eggs, etc all individually so I felt like it added up quickly. I opted for chicken and liked the broth but I thought the chicken was tough. My friend got the pork and really enjoyed it, along with a Thai tea. The wait staff was extremely friendly and when the table next to us had an issue, the staff addressed it immediately. Overall, it was clean, had great service, and was quite busy, and decent food, but I am not going out of my way to return.
google avatar

Yelp
It was alright but we didn't really feel it lived up to the hype. We were two people and arrived around 6 on a Thursday - the hostess was nice and said 15-20 minutes, and that was accurate. Not a bad wait and they will call you on the phone when your table is ready. Our first dish, the seafood salad came really quickly. It was pretty good - the flavors were nice, but nothing to write home about and the calamari and shrimp portions were small. The rest of our food took a pretty long time to come but I know they were very busy. The caramelized catfish special had a great sauce, but it came with two small pieces of fish and one was mostly bones. We also had the chicken pho - it was a good portion, but the broth was really bland and missing the aromatic flavors that pho typically has. It was ok overall but I don't think I'd go back.

Yelp
My favorite pho spot in North Park, it's walking distant. It's a bit pricer because of the location, it's worth it. The interior is clean and they have an awesome obey type painting on the wall. Bar seating, with some beer selection, regular tables and a couple outside. The service there is fast and all the server are nice. I usually order Pho Tai or Pho Brisket, the broth is flavorful. The server will pour the broth inside the bowl. Appetizer I tried the Banh xeo tacos which is okay. I highly recommend the pho and the service is pretty amazing.

Yelp
Generous potions, good views. Parking could be tricky in the area but it should not defer you from visiting this Pho gem in North Park. I ordered classic chicken pho with thin noodles and was very content with my choice. They also have a great variety of drinks to complement any meal they serve in house. Cannot wait to be back

Yelp
We arrived and stood at the host podium for about 5 minutes until someone greeted us and told us to go to the 2nd table out in patio because we have a dog with us. We searched specifically for restaurants that allows dogs and have outdoor dining so it worked for us. The staffs were very attentive and checked on us a few times. 3-4 different servers came by to take our orders and we had to repeatedly tell them we already ordered. I did keep 1 menu to look back at so perhaps that's the reason. They didn't offer any treats or water for my dog but we brought our own. I ordered pork and shrimps spring rolls. They were big and fat! I loved it! The sauce were perfect. Savory and sweet with a hint of peanut. Next I ordered beef ribs combination pho. It came with a small cut of bone marrow but no meatballs to my disappointment for $26 I think. It was neat that the server brought us dry bowl of pho and then poured the broth into the bowl. Nice touch! My husband ordered the all in vermicelli noodles dish. It was good but I was not too crazy about the pork meat loaf. They tasted synthetic like a pork or beef version of spam. There were 3 pieces of grilled shrimps which were delicious. Our bills came out to about $65 plus tips. It was a nice experience. Parking is a pain. We circled around 3 blocks about 3-4 times until we finally saw someone leaving. Of course you can pay for parking but it's $17 per hour with 2 hours minimum. We parked and did a short walk. Restaurant was facing the street but it was a nice evening and peaceful. I would go back for their spring rolls. Thank you Shank & Bone's staff!

Yelp
I ordered the oxtail pho and I was pretty surprised at how much oxtail was in my bowl- the oxtail was tender and pretty much slipped off the bone! I gave half of my oxtail to husband, added it to his pho and it was just enough for both of us. The broth was very flavorful. Overall, the pho was pretty delicious and comparable to what you can get in Little Saigon in OC. The service was fast and we were seated pretty fast. We came on a Wednesday night and we were surprised at how crowded it got; it almost felt like a Saturday Night. The ambiance of the restaurant had a modern feel with Vietnamese decor. It's a little bit on pricey side for a bowl of pho, but it was worth the try overall!

Yelp
Dinner for last night in SD! I'm a sucker for bone marrow, oxtail and short rib soup. Place didn't disappoint. We got there little over 5 and thy still had happy hour going. Special for happy hour was the shank and bone soup! No noodles came with it which I'm fine with as I'm not much a noodle person, im a broth gal with a side of rice and I'm good. Not knowing how huge this thing was going to be I ordered a side of oxtails to throw in it. The soup bone was huge! It came with two giant big beef bones with marrow inside the bone. It also had some beef, cartilage around the bone few pieces of beef. Meat was so tender including the cartridge around it. They give you a knife to carve off the meat and cartilage. Broth was good with a hit of sweetness which don't care for, ibut nothing lemon can't fix as like my soup little tangy. Side of oxtail came with 4 thin slices which is just as tender and yummy broth is minimal so don't expect a cup of it. Didn't bother to as for more broth as I dumped it in my shank bowl. My co workers got the signature pho soup! It came with the typical topping on the side, lemon, jalapeño, sprout and lemon. The thing that was different was the pour the broth at the table. Not sure if you can ask for more broth if need! Overall is cute open air place service was good and it hit the spot.

Yelp
Overall very good service. Servers were nice and helpful and checked on us periodically. I just thought the food quality had gone down slightly since my last visit. Bone marrow was very flavorful with lots of herbs on top but not much marrow at all within the bone that they served us. That was fairly disappointing. The chicken wings were well favored and crispy. The special pho broth was great but meat quality besides the ox tail and bone marrow was meh. Too tough for the broth and very hard to chew. The shrimp / seafood Vietnamese salad was disappointing. It is well flavored but lacked much seafood and the portions were too tiny for the price. Great ambiance and very hip with a Vietnamese flair. I think overall a good experience.

Yelp
If you're looking for non-traditional in a lively atmosphere .. this is your place. The decor is a mixture of vietnam lite and urban. Every song that pumped through the speakers was Lively and made you feel like it was the weekend. The service was fairly average, nothing too impressive but it got the job done. The pho rather average; the broth was kind of muted and not very vibrant, there were no traditional offerings of various spice on the table, and our vegetables were not very fresh. The area that really affected my score was the price. Although they have some creative offerings like smoked wag you, i find that $26 for your smaller is a little strep. There are many establishments in San Diego where you can have pho at a fraction of the price with better quality and more robust flavors. If you got money to burn and you're going to be drinking in the area, give it a try, but all in all I would say pass on this one.

Yelp
Decent spot in a popular area. Stopped by around 8:00 pm on a Sunday night and the place was busy. We sat at the bar and had a couple bowls of pho with the classic pork & shrimp spring rolls. The spring rolls did not have much flavor to them except for the peanut dipping sauce. I'm also not really a big fan of the cold serving temperature in general as well. The pho was filling and the broth was on the sweeter side. The thicker, flat noodles are preferred if you're not trying to watch your gluten! Not a bad a place to try if you're looking for a satisfying bowl of pho.

Yelp
I've heard so many good things about Shank & Bone I had to come and try it. First impression, the restaurant is really nice inside and out (great location also). The service was also a solid 10/10, they kept checking up on us while also answering any questions we had. As for the food, the Pho broth wasn't really great, and I still tasted the starchiness from the noodles being cooked in my broth. I don't add any sricha or hoisin sauce to my bowl, as I like to let the broth flavor shine on it's own. I did like the Ban Xeo Tacos though, very unique and delicious. Overall though I would say I was disappointed but really want this restaurant to succeed as I love Vietnamese food. Hopefully they can make improvements to the Pho quality. Would i go again? Probably not.

Yelp
My friends rave about Shank & Bone as I've gone with them for a few times. Maybe it's the selection I chose or maybe it's the overall experience, but my feelings are always mixed whenever I do dine here. On my recent visit, I had a hair in my bowl of pho. I did wait around to see if any staff would check in, but to no avail did they come around until we flagged for the check. They were really respectful about it, but I wish the service could have been better! As for the food, our Banh Xeo tacos were tasty and held up well with lots of filling. Due to the batter of banh xeo in general, the shell part gets soggy extremely fast if not eaten right away. The thai tea we ordered was a nice balance of sweetness but more on the watery side. Their pho broth being poured once served is a nice touch! My cuts of brisket in my pho were tender. Overall, I do like the uniqueness of Shank & Bone and do believe they deliver higher quality ingredients, but I find the service and attentiveness at my local favorite pho restaurants better. Had it been more sanitary, I would dine again!

Yelp
My family and I went on a trip to SD and tried this "authentic" pho spot. Filet Mignon pho: 3/5 The broth was on the bland side. The noodles were a decent texture. The filet slices were nice and soft. I'm from OC and Phoholic has set my standards high for authentic pho so this didn't hit the criteria for me. Service: 4/5 The service was decent. We were seated quickly and greeted nicely. However, I wish they would check up on us more. I did like the concept of pouring the broth out of canisters so it's nice and hot. Ambiance: 2/5 The restrooms were dirty! Toilet paper everywhere on the floor. Though the interior was modern. We were seated at a table with a caution sign right behind one of our seated when we were seated. Despite the floor being dry. We had to move it back and forth when we went to the restroom and it was an inconvenience. Overall: The pho here is not authentic, coming from someone who's Vietnamese. If you're looking for real pho go to OC.

Yelp
Got takeout from Shank & Bone the other night for the first time and it was good, and I think I'll try other places in the future. - shrimp & pork spring roll - 4/5, definitely the largest sized spring roll I've ever had at any Vietnamese restaurant to date, two pieces that were a third larger than most other places. The inside was great, the rice paper roll a bit hard/thick, so that part wasn't as good. The dipping sauce could have been more peanut forward for my taste. - surf & turf bun bowl - 4/5, it's hard to describe the pork part of this bowl, almost like thick pressed pieces of congealed meat cut into slices and topped with crushed peanuts. I kept taking bites because I couldn't decide if I liked it or not but in the end decided not. I really prefer grilled thin slices of flavored pork in my pork bun bowls and this was not it. The three pieces of grilled shrimp were just okay, a little on the small side (I'd say medium sized shrimp) and a little dry. The bed of noodles was generously portioned and came with lots of shredded lettuce, carrots, mint leaves, bean sprouts, slivers of cucumber, so that part was very good, I just wished the surf and turf part that went with it was tastier.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place! I came here not for the shank for specifically for the Banh Xeo. I've been looking everywhere for this! If you don't know what Banh is; it is a Vietnamese crepe with bean sprouts, shrimp, chicken and veggies and it's delicious. However my tacos fell very short of what I am used to.. We ordered the Gio Cuon or (spring rolls), the Bahn Xeo Tacos (Vietnamese crepes), the Pho Duoi Bo Oxtail (Oxtail Oho) and Thai tea. First, the tea was and freshly made in house. The spring rolls were good, very fresh. The Bahn Xeo fell short for me, it didn't have a lot of flavor in the crepe itself and the sauce they gave on the side which is usually a vinegar was just a watered down sweet and sour sauce.. I also had to ask for a side of white rice with them, which is how you would traditionally eat Bahn Xeo. The Duoi Bo Oxtail was a good pho, a good breath and the meat was cooked perfectly but the ingredients are brought out in a bowl at what I can assume is room temperature and then come back with a kettle of the breath and pour it on top. This is totally not necessary because the pho was luke warm within 10 minutes which sucks for people who eat slow. The restaurant was beautiful inside but the service could have been better and the staff really acted like anything I asked for was a bother :/ Bottom line is there is better pho out there. I would skip this place if you're looking for pho.

Yelp
On my previous visit I tried the banh xeo tacos, the catfish special and the chicken wings, all of which were delicious. On my recent visit we tried the signature pho and the works bun bowl. Both classic dishes were great. The decor is modern and hip. Most of the staff is very nice, however, there was one unpleasant staff member on our last visit. I live next to City Heights Little Saigon so this restaurant is definitely a splurge compared to my normal spots, but the food is definitely well made and tasty.

Yelp

Yelp
Service was great, food was good. Ambiance was kinda loud, North park vibes, I like it rather than being too quiet. I have had better pho but the pho here was good. I like that they pour the soup once it gets to the table, that way no fingers are in your bowl of soup LOL We got the signature pho and it had a lot of different meats in it, so it was filling. Banh xeo tacos were a nice concept, I wish it was more crunchy though, a bit too soft. The Goi, supposed to be shrimp and calamari salad but I didn't see any calamari in there but at least it tastes good an authentic. Grilled scallops were good also, I can eat a bunch of these!

Yelp
I've been to S&B a handful of times and it's definitely on the pricier side for when it comes to Viet food in SD. Their spring rolls are pretty standard, nothing super exciting, but their pho is usually what makes the experience great. We've tried their filet mignon, round eye, short rib, and chicken pho. The beef pho broth is significantly better than the chicken broth, in which the chicken broth really lacks any flavor. The beef phos are what I would recommend and I like how they give you the option of flat or thin noodles. My only concern is that every time I go the service is really slow. It takes forever to flag down a server for anything.

Yelp
food was good but the server had bad vibes. She also spilled the broth on my boyfriend. and when we ask for water she almost knocked most items on the table

Yelp
Impressed with the taste, not your regular Vietnamese cuisine. The roasted bone marrow and roasted crostinis in cilantro chimichurri is delightful and their signature pho' and wagyu pho was perfectly simmered with spices in addition to bone marrow and special slices of prime beef. I am not too sure why the female food server seemed to be so quick to offer the check though there was no one waiting in line to get in. The male food server was kind and friendly. We also requested to have our to go orders separated but was not done. They were quick to replenish our drinks and the overall turn around of our orders was also quick.
