Where to Eat in San Diego During a Weekend Away | Eater

"At Shank & Bone, pho takes center stage — more than a dozen varieties are available, including a vegan option. The menu straddles the line between classic and modern Vietnamese cuisine, including traditional favorites like gỏi cuốn (spring rolls filled with shrimp and pork or veggies) phở cuốn rice noodle rolls are plump with grilled ginger beef, fresh basil, mint and bean sprouts, and there is a selection of rice plates, bún bowls, and bánh mì. Don’t sleep on the dinner specialties either — bánh xèo tacos are mini viet savory crepes in taco form, stuffed with sautéed pork, shrimp, bean sprouts, jicama, and fresh mint in a light, airy coconut turmeric shell, while phở fries are loaded with chopped brisket, shank, and flank, sautéed with garlic, then topped with Thai basil, cilantro, onions, bean sprouts, and hoisin sauce. Beverages include sixteen taps of local beer and a short list of craft cocktails, sake, and wine." - Mary Beth Abate

Modern and Classic Vietnamese Dishes Move Into North Park - Eater San Diego

"A new Asian spot has arrived on University Avenue with the debut of Vietnamese eatery Shank & Bone. Created by Han Tran and Jay Choy, who run the 14-year-old Ebisu Sushi in Hillcrest, with business partners Lam Nguyen and Phuc Vo (Crab Town), the restaurant is a well-designed, contemporary showcase for a menu that features traditional Vietnamese cuisine and ingredients." - Candice Woo

A Vietnamese Culinary Gem in North Park! Highly recommend their signature Bone Marrow Phở,The broth is rich and deeply flavorful, with the melted marrow adding a luxurious depth. Paired with wide rice noodles and fresh herbs, it's absolutely soul-satisfying! The restaurant features a modern industrial vibe with retro touches, creating a relaxed atmosphere perfect for casual hangouts with friends. We visited on a weekend evening--it was quite busy, and we waited about 30 minutes, so I'd recommend arriving early or visiting on a weekday. If you love creative Vietnamese cuisine, this is a must-visit spot in San Diego!Generous portions, authentic flavors, and yes--the bones are so good to gnaw on!

Craving some Vietnamese food? Definitely hit up this spot in North Park. You instantly will be drawn in by the vibes this place gives. I felt like I was transported into Vietnam with the aesthethic. I always judge a Vietnamese spot by its broth. And let me tell you, it’s delicious. Also I’m loving the fresh lettuce wraps they offer. The staff is very friendly and help you with what’s best on the menu to order. I can’t wait to go back!

We enjoyed great food, ambiance, and service. Finding a table was easy, even with a stroller. The food arrived quickly, and everything was tasty and flavorful. I want to come back to try their weekend specials!

The BEST pho I ever had. Got the oxtail pho. The soup is so flavorful. Amazing!

We loved this casual Vietnamese restaurant in San Diego. The food was outstanding. The servers were very friendly too. We tried the Passion iced tea, the Pho-Rench Dip, the vegetarian egg rolls and the Banh Xeo tacos. The side of dipping broth for the banh mi sandwich was so good, this is one of the best banh mi's I've ever had. The egg rolls were crispy and delicious and the tacos outstanding as well. Prices were good for the quality, our bill came to $49 for the two of us.

Super super tasty! You need to get the fried chicken wings. The sauce is unlike anything else and the wings are insanely crunchy. Also the picanha pho is so soft and flavorful!

Google
Best pho I ever had. Must try the oxtail pho. Chicken wings were soso- too much fried batter, salty sauce, and they couldn't get fully rid of chicken smell and blood.,

I had the most amazing service in this restaurant, Riley was absolutely attentive, courteous, professional and very friendly not to mentioned very knowledgeable. The food was the best with lots of flavor and very fresh. Atmosphere I must say felt warm and relaxing giving the chance to enjoy the TV screen playing great movies 👍 I felt like home! Thank you the whole team and Riley to make me feel welcomed 🙏🏽

Yelp
Looking for a solid Vietnamese spot in North Park? Give Shank & Bone a try! I've visited a spot a handful of times and have had a delicious meal every time! I've yet to try their signature pho, but have heard MANY great things about it from friends and fellow Yelp reviewers. This time around, I ordered the Beef Shank Bahn Mi special, which included a side of bone broth jus. Oh my GOSH did this hit the spot!! The jus was so tasty, I could drink it on its own! I love how well it complimented the sandwich. The bread was perfectly crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside and the sandwich itself was well balanced, with perfect amount of beef and crunchy veggies. The modern, industrial decor with the plentiful daylight and spacious seating makes for an enjoyable ambience. And the service, as always, is exceptional. SOLID food, wonderful staff, and an overall delicious dining experience! I highly recommend this spot to everyone looking for a great eatery!

Yelp
Came when they opened at noon for lunch and ordered the following: - Roasted Bone Marrow - I thought 3 pieces of bread wasn't going to be enough, but there was very little marrow and it probably could've fit on one slice - Beef carpaccio - delicious, I think it would've been better if the meat was cut in smaller pieces so you're not left with a giant chewy piece - Scallops - a little too much oil, but good otherwise. Wasn't sure about the carrot/daikon mixture - Pho Tai - they brought the bowl to the table and then poured the broth in from a pitcher (interesting!). Went with the flat noodles, but it was a little too soft for me. Wished there was more leafy herbs to add. Service was good. There wasn't many parties since it was early, but they were quick to clean up our table... I think I tried everything I wanted so not sure I'd be quick to return, but it was a good visit overall!

Yelp
Pretty chill lil viet spot, nothing to really write home about but the food was overall good. The egg rolls were a lil small but well made and very crispy. Shoutout the wings though, those were super buss. Service was also good, my water was always filled :)

Yelp
I ordered through Uber Eats and the Pho broth was piping hot still when delivered. I really liked their pho bowl and the portion was large enough for me to have leftovers. I ordered a large broth to go with it which wasn't needed they provided plenty of broth. The rice noodle rolls were decent but the peanut sauce really made that dish. I think I may have found my new go to Pho place.

Yelp
Vietnamese restaurant/ Café located in the busy area of North Park and has a modern feel to it both in decor and menu. The space is really cool. It feels really sleek with some nostalgic type pieces. Came here with a few of my cousins when we were visiting the area and honestly, I was a little skeptical especially with that ampersand in the name, but we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Also note that our visit was a couple years ago, so maybe it's slightly changed. I'm not sure. For starters, I ordered a drink called the Old Pho-sioned. To share, we ordered items like the beef carpaccio and the banh xeo tacos. These dishes were beautifully plated, and the Vietnamese flavors were on point. For myself, I ordered the signature pho with bone marrow. They bring a kettle with the hot broth and pour it into your bowl at your table. Is the pomp in circumstance necessary? Probably not, but is it appreciated? Absolutely! Overall, just a really fun café with delicious Vietnamese food with some fun and creative modern takes.

Yelp
My order was the tofu pho with beef broth: 10/10 This place serves up your pho without the broth just before they walk over with a metal carafe that has your broth of choice. Their broth is steaming hot and packed with flavor! The flavor from the beef broth, along with the heap of veggies and meat, made this one of my favorite pho spots in town. The portion is generous here!

Yelp
We arrived and stood at the host podium for about 5 minutes until someone greeted us and told us to go to the 2nd table out in patio because we have a dog with us. We searched specifically for restaurants that allows dogs and have outdoor dining so it worked for us. The staffs were very attentive and checked on us a few times. 3-4 different servers came by to take our orders and we had to repeatedly tell them we already ordered. I did keep 1 menu to look back at so perhaps that's the reason. They didn't offer any treats or water for my dog but we brought our own. I ordered pork and shrimps spring rolls. They were big and fat! I loved it! The sauce were perfect. Savory and sweet with a hint of peanut. Next I ordered beef ribs combination pho. It came with a small cut of bone marrow but no meatballs to my disappointment for $26 I think. It was neat that the server brought us dry bowl of pho and then poured the broth into the bowl. Nice touch! My husband ordered the all in vermicelli noodles dish. It was good but I was not too crazy about the pork meat loaf. They tasted synthetic like a pork or beef version of spam. There were 3 pieces of grilled shrimps which were delicious. Our bills came out to about $65 plus tips. It was a nice experience. Parking is a pain. We circled around 3 blocks about 3-4 times until we finally saw someone leaving. Of course you can pay for parking but it's $17 per hour with 2 hours minimum. We parked and did a short walk. Restaurant was facing the street but it was a nice evening and peaceful. I would go back for their spring rolls. Thank you Shank & Bone's staff!

Yelp
My friend and I kind of randomly found this place which Google searching vegan banh mi - we are both vegan and never bothered to check it out. Just assuming it was more of a steakhouse. We just wanted a classic tofu banh mi and they DELIVERED. It was delicious and perfect with the steamed tofu modification or the fried tofu (both were delicious). Service was super friendly, food came out really quick even on a busy Friday at prime time. It will be in my rotation for now on

Yelp
Good not the best, and definitely on the pricier side. They decorated very cute and I loved the hanging red envelopes for lunar new year! We ordered the oxtail pho, I was surprised at how much oxtail we received! It made the price a little more justifiable, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here for it. The Saigon chicken wings were so crispy and flavorful. The smell was definitely stronger than the taste, but it was still delicious. The spring roll rice paper wrapper ripped apart on the way home. There doesn't really seem to be communication between the staff. We ordered the same pho but one flat noodle and one regular noodle. I'm assuming the server who brought out our pho didn't know there were different noodles ordered for each and we didn't think to ask which bowl was which since they were just handed to us. We ended up getting each other's bowl but didn't notice until after we put the toppings in. Not a huge deal, but definitely a small miscommunication between everyone (including us for not verifying). Additionally, when we were ordering in the beginning I had mentioned I wanted some spring rolls to go and on a separate check. When it came time to pay, everything was all on one check and the server seemed taken back that I asked for the spring rolls to be on a separate check. Again, not a big deal, but definitely made a difference in our experience.

Yelp
It is not our first time here. Every time we visit we get the Brisket and bone broth sandwich. It's exceptional! Service could be a little faster, at least from the pace we're used to, but they're always helpful and friendly. We see 2 servers when we come on a weekday, serving the tables inside and out, plus the bar area. The place is fun and hip. Parking in North Park is crazy. There are a few 15 min parking spots are available across the street. Definitely must try!!

Yelp
As an avid lover of Vietnamese food, my expectations for Shank & Bone were high. I went on a week day during lunch time and although it was busy, I liked the big open space and multiple seating options that they had, and quickly found a seat. They had a special of a brisket bahn mi sandwich with a bone marrow with chimichurri, and I devoured everything and left no crumbs. It was delicious. I'll try the pho next time because I was so full that I didn't get to try it. But everything was really good and I'm excited to come back!

Yelp
My family and I went on a trip to SD and tried this "authentic" pho spot. Filet Mignon pho: 3/5 The broth was on the bland side. The noodles were a decent texture. The filet slices were nice and soft. I'm from OC and Phoholic has set my standards high for authentic pho so this didn't hit the criteria for me. Service: 4/5 The service was decent. We were seated quickly and greeted nicely. However, I wish they would check up on us more. I did like the concept of pouring the broth out of canisters so it's nice and hot. Ambiance: 2/5 The restrooms were dirty! Toilet paper everywhere on the floor. Though the interior was modern. We were seated at a table with a caution sign right behind one of our seated when we were seated. Despite the floor being dry. We had to move it back and forth when we went to the restroom and it was an inconvenience. Overall: The pho here is not authentic, coming from someone who's Vietnamese. If you're looking for real pho go to OC.

Yelp
Shank & Bone is serving up some delicious Vietnamese cuisine in the North Park area! To get here, there is street parking all around the area. Wifey and I came for lunch right when they opened and were seated immediately upon arrival. Inside, they have some amazing Vietnamese inspired decor and a spacious setup consisting of about 12-15 tables. As for their menu, they have an awesome selection of appetizers, pho, banh mi, rice, vermicelli, and speciality dishes to choose from. We opted to try the Banh Xeo Tacos, Brisket & Bone Marrow Banh Mi, and the Signature Pho. Everything we had was absolutely delicious with generous portion sizes and elevated yet authentic flavors. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here. All of the staff are very friendly, welcoming, and attentive. We will definitely be back for another delicious meal next time we are in the area. Shank & Bone is Viet gang approved!

Yelp
Vibrant spot with fun interior decor, pho broth is missing depth This is honestly a really fun spot to have a bite with friends. The interior is bold and modern, and has lots of interesting decor pieces (hello, motorcycle??). I appreciate that the the food is on the more classic side, which helps keeps things familiar and comforting I was really excited to try the signature pho, which included highlights like bone marrow, and oxtail - super unique touches! Broth was poured table side for great presentation points. Meat was generous. But honestly, the broth, which makes or breaks a pho, was a slight let down. It's flavour was not rich enough against all the wonderful meats. For something to be called a signature dish, and to have its cooking time flaunted, I expected more

Yelp
This was my niece's pick. They love it and it is close to her apartment. No reservation taken, so we were fortunate to arrive just before the rush. Seating is tight with tables very close to one another. Being from NY, we are lucky to have many Pho restaurant options. The food here was middle of the road with the best exception of my catfish dish. The spring rolls with shrimp were just ok but the dipping sauce elevated it. 5 in our party, no alcohol. One starter, the chicken wings was a hit at the table. $250

Yelp
It was alright but we didn't really feel it lived up to the hype. We were two people and arrived around 6 on a Thursday - the hostess was nice and said 15-20 minutes, and that was accurate. Not a bad wait and they will call you on the phone when your table is ready. Our first dish, the seafood salad came really quickly. It was pretty good - the flavors were nice, but nothing to write home about and the calamari and shrimp portions were small. The rest of our food took a pretty long time to come but I know they were very busy. The caramelized catfish special had a great sauce, but it came with two small pieces of fish and one was mostly bones. We also had the chicken pho - it was a good portion, but the broth was really bland and missing the aromatic flavors that pho typically has. It was ok overall but I don't think I'd go back.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the oxtail pho and I was pretty surprised at how much oxtail was in my bowl- the oxtail was tender and pretty much slipped off the bone! I gave half of my oxtail to husband, added it to his pho and it was just enough for both of us. The broth was very flavorful. Overall, the pho was pretty delicious and comparable to what you can get in Little Saigon in OC. The service was fast and we were seated pretty fast. We came on a Wednesday night and we were surprised at how crowded it got; it almost felt like a Saturday Night. The ambiance of the restaurant had a modern feel with Vietnamese decor. It's a little bit on pricey side for a bowl of pho, but it was worth the try overall!
google avatar

Yelp
On my previous visit I tried the banh xeo tacos, the catfish special and the chicken wings, all of which were delicious. On my recent visit we tried the signature pho and the works bun bowl. Both classic dishes were great. The decor is modern and hip. Most of the staff is very nice, however, there was one unpleasant staff member on our last visit. I live next to City Heights Little Saigon so this restaurant is definitely a splurge compared to my normal spots, but the food is definitely well made and tasty.

Yelp
I literally go here every week lol. Service can be a little slow at times but I love their chicken pho and vermicelli bowls; the pork one in particular is my favorite. They have some great happy hour deals and I love their tap selection

Yelp
Decent spot in a popular area. Stopped by around 8:00 pm on a Sunday night and the place was busy. We sat at the bar and had a couple bowls of pho with the classic pork & shrimp spring rolls. The spring rolls did not have much flavor to them except for the peanut dipping sauce. I'm also not really a big fan of the cold serving temperature in general as well. The pho was filling and the broth was on the sweeter side. The thicker, flat noodles are preferred if you're not trying to watch your gluten! Not a bad a place to try if you're looking for a satisfying bowl of pho.
google avatar

Kanya D.

Yelp
My favorite pho spot in North Park, it's walking distant. It's a bit pricer because of the location, it's worth it. The interior is clean and they have an awesome obey type painting on the wall. Bar seating, with some beer selection, regular tables and a couple outside. The service there is fast and all the server are nice. I usually order Pho Tai or Pho Brisket, the broth is flavorful. The server will pour the broth inside the bowl. Appetizer I tried the Banh xeo tacos which is okay. I highly recommend the pho and the service is pretty amazing.

Yelp
I've heard so many good things about Shank & Bone I had to come and try it. First impression, the restaurant is really nice inside and out (great location also). The service was also a solid 10/10, they kept checking up on us while also answering any questions we had. As for the food, the Pho broth wasn't really great, and I still tasted the starchiness from the noodles being cooked in my broth. I don't add any sricha or hoisin sauce to my bowl, as I like to let the broth flavor shine on it's own. I did like the Ban Xeo Tacos though, very unique and delicious. Overall though I would say I was disappointed but really want this restaurant to succeed as I love Vietnamese food. Hopefully they can make improvements to the Pho quality. Would i go again? Probably not.

Yelp
My friends rave about Shank & Bone as I've gone with them for a few times. Maybe it's the selection I chose or maybe it's the overall experience, but my feelings are always mixed whenever I do dine here. On my recent visit, I had a hair in my bowl of pho. I did wait around to see if any staff would check in, but to no avail did they come around until we flagged for the check. They were really respectful about it, but I wish the service could have been better! As for the food, our Banh Xeo tacos were tasty and held up well with lots of filling. Due to the batter of banh xeo in general, the shell part gets soggy extremely fast if not eaten right away. The thai tea we ordered was a nice balance of sweetness but more on the watery side. Their pho broth being poured once served is a nice touch! My cuts of brisket in my pho were tender. Overall, I do like the uniqueness of Shank & Bone and do believe they deliver higher quality ingredients, but I find the service and attentiveness at my local favorite pho restaurants better. Had it been more sanitary, I would dine again!

Yelp
Really really good! Enjoyed this open air restaraunt serving HUGE bowls of pho which they fill to the brim with piping hot broth upon serving. I also tried the bahn mi with beef and it was melt in my mouth delcious! Spring rolls were super fresh. Servers are great and food came out fast. I will return when im in the area. Four stars sunce the price point is a bit high for what is served but it IS good!

Delicious food! Fancy pho is not always what I'm going for, but this hits the spot. Love it!

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place! I came here not for the shank for specifically for the Banh Xeo. I've been looking everywhere for this! If you don't know what Banh is; it is a Vietnamese crepe with bean sprouts, shrimp, chicken and veggies and it's delicious. However my tacos fell very short of what I am used to.. We ordered the Gio Cuon or (spring rolls), the Bahn Xeo Tacos (Vietnamese crepes), the Pho Duoi Bo Oxtail (Oxtail Oho) and Thai tea. First, the tea was and freshly made in house. The spring rolls were good, very fresh. The Bahn Xeo fell short for me, it didn't have a lot of flavor in the crepe itself and the sauce they gave on the side which is usually a vinegar was just a watered down sweet and sour sauce.. I also had to ask for a side of white rice with them, which is how you would traditionally eat Bahn Xeo. The Duoi Bo Oxtail was a good pho, a good breath and the meat was cooked perfectly but the ingredients are brought out in a bowl at what I can assume is room temperature and then come back with a kettle of the breath and pour it on top. This is totally not necessary because the pho was luke warm within 10 minutes which sucks for people who eat slow. The restaurant was beautiful inside but the service could have been better and the staff really acted like anything I asked for was a bother :/ Bottom line is there is better pho out there. I would skip this place if you're looking for pho.

Yelp
Shank & Bone has surprisingly good vegan pho, definitely one of the best I've had in SD. My non-vegan fiancee and I came in and we both really enjoyed our meals. Parking was a little tricky but not too bad in the area and the staff were super friendly and quick!
google avatar

Yelp
Without a doubt this is the best Vietnamese joint east of Saigon. The quality of the food, the presentation, the service, the location are all 5*+.. i ordered a trip tip bahn mi with a bone marrow on the side and it was extraordinary.
google avatar

Lyn V.

Yelp
Service was great, food was good. Ambiance was kinda loud, North park vibes, I like it rather than being too quiet. I have had better pho but the pho here was good. I like that they pour the soup once it gets to the table, that way no fingers are in your bowl of soup LOL We got the signature pho and it had a lot of different meats in it, so it was filling. Banh xeo tacos were a nice concept, I wish it was more crunchy though, a bit too soft. The Goi, supposed to be shrimp and calamari salad but I didn't see any calamari in there but at least it tastes good an authentic. Grilled scallops were good also, I can eat a bunch of these!

Yelp
I had really high expectations for their pho due to the reviews, and I was not disappointed. Their pho is probably the best thing on their menu (I would hope so, since that's what they specialize in). I was expecting extremely high prices, however, I don't think they charge that much higher for their pho than other generic Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego. The price for some of their sides and appetizers, though, is a little outrageous. A lot of their dishes are a bit too simple to be charging the price that they do, hence the 4 stars rather than 5. I do love the presentation of their food items, though. They find a way to make classic Vietnamese street food dishes look more elevated with their plating style, though I do not think that this justifies the higher price tag, nor does the flavor. I would still come again, for the pho, but I might hold off on the sides next time. The service was really good and I love the vibe of the restaurant as well. Overall, it was a mostly positive experience.

Chandler W.

Yelp
Great service from Steven. The staff are very friendly with each other and seemingly happy to work there. Made for a great ambiance The Pho was flavorful and had decent portions of meat. Ask for the house-made chili oil to add a nice touch!

Yelp
Shank and Bone - A Bone Marrow Lover's Paradise For New Year's, my craving for bone marrow was through the roof, and Shank and Bone in North Park was my obvious choice. This spot has consistently delivered, and last night was no exception. We started with the Saigon Chicken Wings (6 per order), and they were everything I hoped for--crispy, with a perfectly balanced fish sauce glaze that was spicy, sweet, and savory all at once. It's the kind of dish that sets the tone for the rest of the meal. Next came the Roasted Bone Marrow & Bánh Mì Crostinis. The marrow was beautifully roasted, rich, and indulgent, paired with a cilantro chimichurri that added just the right amount of brightness. The crostinis were the ideal vehicle for scooping up every last bit--it's a must-order. For our main dishes, we went all out. The Signature Phở is hands-down one of the best bowls of phở I've had. Loaded with shank, oxtail, eye of round steak, flank, brisket, and even bone marrow, it's a carnivore's dream. The broth was flavorful, aromatic, and comforting--exactly what phở should be. We also got an extra small broth on the side, which was such a great addition for slurping through the meal. Then came the Brisket & Bone Bánh Mì. It was a showstopper--Snake River Farms wagyu smoked brisket, layered with cilantro chimichurri, Viet pickles, culantro, jalapeño, and mayo, all sandwiched in a crispy, light baguette. The side of bone marrow for spreading made this sandwich over-the-top decadent. Initially, we were planning to order the Shank & Bone Bowl (bone marrow and bones with beef broth, no noodles), but they were unfortunately out for the day. No worries though--what we had was more than enough to satisfy our cravings. The service was spot-on, as it always is. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed. The ambiance is casual and welcoming, with a perfect mix of traditional Vietnamese flavors and a modern North Park twist. If you love bone marrow and bold Vietnamese flavors, Shank and Bone will never disappoint. The portions were generous--plenty for two adults to feast and leave satisfied. I've been here a few times now, and each visit has been a treat. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to kick their phở and bone marrow cravings up a notch!

Yelp
The pho here is very good and authentic. I'm glad to see two pho noodle options, the flat noodle or the normal thin ones. The pho bowls are served fully loaded plated in the bowl and the server comes and pours the pho broth into your bowl. Everything was very fresh. I had the pho tai and the pho S&B. The S&B comes in a bigger bowl to accommodate all the meats. It was worth the price. I also ordered the chicken egg rolls. It was okay, i am used to pork egg rolls. I saw that they also offered Ca Kho To, which is catfish in a clay pot and i was so excited i ordered it Togo. I was a little disappointed to see the cat fish portion was so small. It came with two pieces in this big bowl, it was a let down. The order also comes with a side soup and rice. I wouldn't recommend ordering this dish . The restaurant was very clean and organized. The staff was nice and friendly. A solid neighborhood restaurant .

Yelp
After trying at least 4 different Vietnamese restaurants in SD, it's safe to say that at Shank and bone knows what they are doing in the kitchen. All of the food was hot and flavorful! The hostess was polite and welcoming. The restaurant is has a cool funky vibe with outdoor seating. This is my new favorite spot in SD for anything Vietnamese!!!

Yelp
This was a cute place, and good service. Pho and bahn mi were good! The price is a little higher than some places off city heights but it's conveniently located in north by bars and shops.

Yelp
I've been to S&B a handful of times and it's definitely on the pricier side for when it comes to Viet food in SD. Their spring rolls are pretty standard, nothing super exciting, but their pho is usually what makes the experience great. We've tried their filet mignon, round eye, short rib, and chicken pho. The beef pho broth is significantly better than the chicken broth, in which the chicken broth really lacks any flavor. The beef phos are what I would recommend and I like how they give you the option of flat or thin noodles. My only concern is that every time I go the service is really slow. It takes forever to flag down a server for anything.

Yelp
People talk about Shank & Bone a lot, so thought I'd give it a try. But overall, find it pretty mid & quite overrated. We got a few appetizers and their signature pho -- nothing spectacular, broth was pretty plain and lacked in the umami pho flavor (maybe they put less msg in there or something?). They specialize in bone marrow, but it's so high in fat content that my stomach can't take it... washes straight out, if you get my gist. I wouldn't care to come back, but at least now I know!

Yelp
BEST PHO in San Diego hands down. Always great service and food is top notch. I'm a bone marrow fanatic, so this was my splurge!

Yelp
Shank & Bone is among the popular restaurants in North Park. Located on University and a block from 30th. Metered Street parking only. The restaurant layout offered both indoor and outdoor seating. I always prefer basking in a little sunshine to get my dose of vitamin D and sat outside with my pup Fendi. The table I sat had a great view of the North Park sign for background pics. However, all outdoor seatings are exposed to the exhaust fumes from the busy traffic and the bus stop right out front, I knew I would not stay long. The restaurant offers their version of Vietnamese foods, most notably Pho, a Vietnamese soup. I've had my share of pho but I am always on the hunt for the best. Even though I wanted to try the vegan pho, I need to increase my collagen intake and so I ordered the beef bone broth pho soup sans noodles to make it gluten and carb free. The waitress was nice but uninformed about some of the menu item details. I noticed the menu offered a kids menu with half the portion which would have been perfect for Me but the waitress quickly said I was not allowed to order. My quick reply was, I was going to order more items like the sugar cane with shrimp on the stick and veggie spring rolls, but since I couldn't order a smaller portion of pho, cancel the other items. Also, if I ordered from the kids menu togo, they can't prevent that! I never finish a bowl of pho and a smaller portion is what I wanted as NOT to be wasteful. Hesitantly, I ordered the simplest pho soup with the beef bones. The wait for my simple order took longer than reasonable time and I informed the waitress, that I have an appointment and cannot wait longer. 2 minutes later my bowl of soup was presented by another staffer. The bowl had two Brontosaurus size beef bones with bone marrow. The bones occupied so much space I couldn't even put my soup spoon inside. I was not comfortable dealing with these hugh bones, it would be too laborious and messy. The bones had some tender meat, the fatty bone marrow as well as lots of glutenous tendons, which I'm NOT a fan of. FYI the meat, tendon and fatty parts happen to be what collagen is made of, but I will stick to taking the pill form! After tilting the bowl, I manage to taste the broth, which was phenomenal. The taste of star anise and other herbs was flavorful, wholesome delish, but could have been served piping hot and not warm so the taste of this Bone Broth alone deserves 4.5 stars! I didn't feel comfortable eating this bowl with all the bones, so I promptly asked for togo packaging. Also, didn't like the outdoor elements of the traffic exhaust and countless number of lookey-loos and sadly many homeless people passing by. The interior of the restaurant was decorated modernish but did NOT appear clean, lots of debris on the floor and surfaces, which is a major faux pas. If you're not as peculiarly picky about some of the negatives I mentioned, this place is a worth visit or order Togo for the collagen rich beef bone broth soup, Pho from Shank and Bone!

Yelp
I haven't been here in a while, but I'm happy it's back on my radar! I was wandering around North Park and ended up here so randomly. Had the beef stew and it was SO tasty. The flavors of that stew were so perfect, and the portion size was great for me. The bread was warm and had a nice outer crust with a fluffy inside. If I could eat their bread every day at home I would be in heaven. Service was friendly, prices above average for Vietnamese, but reasonable for the location. Ambiance was open air, hipster, relaxed. It was a great lunch stop surprise today, and I will be back again for more bread and other goodies soon!

Yelp
Came for a weekday lunch and was pleasantly surprised! I ordered a grilled pork banh mi (without cilantro) and my friend ordered the classic spring rolls. The banh mi isn't very large but the pork was so flavorful and tender, and the bread was crispy but not too hard like I've had at some other banh mi spots. Flavors balanced nicely and the banh mi was $10 which I thought was a fair price. My friend also really enjoyed her spring rolls! Service was very friendly and attentive, and there's plenty of seating inside with a casual and lively ambiance. Parking can be tough to find since it's street parking so make sure to factor that in when planning your arrival. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Was in North Park and was feeling like pho. Found Shank & Bone on Yelp and it looked pretty good, so we stopped by. I love these new pho restaurants that don't just feed you the same old menu, but actually give you some real quality. Had the Signature Pho S&B, which somehow both has oxtail AND bone marrow. This is definitely some of the best pho I have had anywhere. The meat was plentiful and came off easily, the broth was fantastic, and the noodles were on point. Plus I saw short rib as an add-on, but this was actually real short rib with a substantial amount of meat. Absolutely worth it. Service is fine, no complaints from me. Parking is tough, but there is a parking structure nearby. Really happy to have found this gem. It's a bit expensive, but I'll pay all day for great quality!

Yelp
Pho was good! The fresh noodles were delicious. There was only like 3 or 4 very thin small pieces of meat in my bowl which was kinda sad especially since it was almost 20 dollars. The taste was good. Some waitresses were nice some seemed a little annoyed i had my baby there. I sat outside so i didn't annoy anyone with him crying in a busy restaurant but some people did still seem annoyed which is sad. Especially since he wasn't crying for more than a minute if that.

Yelp
Oh man, this place is bomb!!! We ordered the chicken egg rolls to start, and just to let everyone know... the lettuce and picked carrots are not garnish, you can rip off the lettuce and wrap the egg roll, add some shredded radish and carrots in side, roll the crisp cold lettuce around your hot crispy egg roll and and dip it in the delicious sauce to balance the hotness with the chill lettuce. So friggin good!!! You're welcome! We also ordered the crepe tacos, and damn, that was bomb too!!! Great starters, highly recommend 10 out of 10! Then we ordered the special brisket banh mi complimented with a bone marrow on the side. Oh god... this blew my mind, soooo perfectly balanced, with the fattiness of the bone marrow and tenderness of the brisket, soooo flavorful and all the chimichurri sauce dripping that I used the sandwich to clean up the plate. I can't wait to come back and try the whole menu!!!

Yelp
I really like Shank. We (or just me sometimes) tend to go there if we're going to a show at the Observatory across the street, because it's in easy walking distance. It's an upscale hipster version of the typical hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese eatery. Four stars because it is delicious, but a little pricey. Hopefully I can get one of the mini booth seats, because the other seats are those annoying brightly-colored metal new-style motel chairs that are all the rage (which baffles me, because in no way are they comfortable). Service is always friendly, even when they are crazy busy, which tends to be on the weekends. Otherwise, I've been able to snag a seat ok. It's delicious. But my beef stew is $18, so consider yourself warned.

Yelp
Rating - 3.5 if there was that option Celebrated my mother in law's birthday here around 5pm and it wasn't too crowded which was nice! It starts getting busy around 6-6:30pm on a week day. We ordered: GRILLED SHRIMP SANDWICH - The sandwich itself was a little small but the ingredients were fresh & bread was soft & nicely toasted! The amount of shrimp in the sandwich was about 6 which wasn't too bad but I feel for the price it could've been bigger WHISKEY - My husband ordered 2 thinking it was $8 for a glass but when the check came it ended up being $10 per glass. Not a huge deal and could've easily been a mistake about the pricing but couldn't help but think they weren't being honest OVERALL - The service & experience was ok. The staff were super fast but weren't too attentive & welcoming. If you're craving Vietnamese food & in the area I would stop by for the convenience.
