Where to Find Halal Food and Restaurants in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Parked outside of the Bottle Shop liquor store in South Park, this food truck slings a shawarma wrap made from wagyu beef that’s a standout pick on a menu that also offers egg rolls, wings, and rice plates. It’s been named to many popular food lists, so do expect a wait." - Candice Woo

26 Best Restaurants in San Diego, from Taco Shops to Hotel Lounges | Condé Nast Traveler

"The owners of this food truck in the residential South Park neighborhood use Australian wagyu for the beef shawarma, which is marinated in spices overnight before it’s spit-roasted on site, and then sliced and wrapped in a grilled pita and topped with garlic paste, tahini, and pickles, or served on a plate with yellow rice and tabouli.  The line for the truck has been consistently long since they opened in early 2019 in the parking lot of a neighborhood liquor store. The marbled beef used for the shawarma prevents it from getting dried out when it’s cooked on the vertical rotisserie, keeping the meat juicy. Everything is made fresh daily, from the hummus to the garlic paste." - Marie Tutko, Archana Ram

Google
One of the best places to get shawarma in San Diego! Both beef and chicken are tender, juicy and well seasoned. Fries and rice are outstanding. The shawarma plate also comes with creamy hummus that tastes homemade, and a side of fresh tabbouleh. Definitely recommend 😋😋😋

Google
Had to visit and see what all the hype was about. Ordered the Wagyu Beef Egg Rolls, plate and pita along with Falafel pita. Everything was super tasty and service was friendly and quick. To be honest though, the Wagyu beef tasted like regular beef....but still good none the less. Although they dont sell drinks, they're conveniently located beside a liquor store that also sells non alcoholic drinks. Enjoy.

Google
Seen shawarma on a YouTube channel so I had to go investigate and it didn’t disappoint. I love Mediterranean food as is , but shawarma is on another level of flavorful goodness. The wagyu eggrolls are small but packed with flavor . My husband was disappointed that he didn’t get more. I got the chicken Greek burrito. The price we paid for 2 people was very reasonable we will be going back.

Google
Really good Middle East food from this hidden gem in South Park. Even this has been well advertised from yelp but we haven’t tried it yet. Overall, their food blow my expectation and the wagyu beef was tender and everything else is well seasoned. Even the sauce was nice. Come and try it

Google
This is a food truck which is right next to a liquor store. I’m a huge fan of shawarma and we saw the good reviews about the food truck and decided to try it. The shawarma plate is a good portion and the hummus is fresh and delicious! We’ve already went back for a few times!

Google
It was good and I am glad we tried it but I do think it's is a little overhyped and pretty spendy. We watched a lot of YouTube videos saying it was the greatest and they say they are #1 restaurant in the country on yelp... We got the Wagyu Schwarma plate and Wagyu egg rolls. Both good but nothing out of this world. The hummus was pretty dang good though. I did want to try the lemon chop fries I just didn't have anymore room in my stomach lol. Heard those were tasty. If you're near there and looking for a quick place to eat, it's worth a try.

Google
The restaurant is nice and the preparation is fast. The sandwich is delicious and very filling. The spicy sauce is great! However, the sandwich could use more sauce and garlic to enhance the flavor.

Google
Meh ! I had higher expectations.. it wasn't bad by any means. But it lacked flavor and Some items were dry. I ordered a lot of different items to try them. I wish I didn't.

Yelp
Our go-to spot! I really appreciate that their vegetarian and vegan options feel intentional and well thought out. The vegan shawarma wrap is one of my favorites, and their spicy hummus is seriously delicious. Parking can be a bit tricky, but that's pretty standard for food truck spots. Totally worth it for the food.

Yelp
Chicken shawarma plate was delicious. Service was great and friendly. Chicken is tasty, hummus is delicious. Didn't take too long for a Sunday midafternoon. My only con*** I feel like the chicken plate could have had more chicken. The chicken is cut so thinly. It's scattered over rice, but I felt like the amount wasn't enough for the price.

Yelp
This was our first stop on our week long trip here in San Diego. When we arrived there was a healthy line and wait especially with how many mobile/online orders the staff & kitchen were working on. We decided to go with a wagyu beef & chicken shawarma plate, as well a side of fries. The wait was reasonable given how busy it was. The star of the show was the hummus, without a doubt. Immaculate texture, flavor, and taste. The meats were good, not great. The rice was better in our opinion. The French fries were hot crispy and fresh. It also came with a side of pita which was lovely to pick up some meat/hummus/tabouleh. There were additional containers of a sweet/spicy sauce which was also phenomenal. The garlic sauce/toum on top of the meats was also really good. This truck does all of the accoutrements exceptionally. It is worth to note this is a food truck on the side of a corner market/liquor store. There are no chairs, but a couple of standing tables to sit and enjoy your food. The staff were friendly and provided good service. Overall, I would recommend stopping here and giving it a shot!

Yelp
Huge portions, falafel is a great deal here but could have used a little more tahini sauce. Or get some hummus or tzatziki sauce to help it along. Pita bread with my platter was the only disappointment, seemed dried out or old. One of the two. Also had a Chicken wrap which was done well. If I came back, I'd order the falafel for sure.

Yelp
Tucked behind the Bottle House liquor store, this spot is easy to miss, but totally worth seeking out. I found it thanks to Yelp and was surprised to learn Guy Fieri had been here! I ordered the Chicken Shawarma Wrap and Lemon Cream Chicken Fries. Both were absolutely delicious. The chicken was juicy, the wrap was crisp, and the fries were seasoned perfectly with tender, katsu-style breaded chicken. I just wish there was more of that tangy lemon garlic cream sauce. Fun tip: don't skip the garlic and chili sauces. The chili sauce is tangy, slightly spicy, and refreshing. Service was fast (only a 5-minute wait), but note that parking is tight and there are only two tables so most people grab takeout. I was lucky to snag a seat and eat on the spot. I plan to come back for the wagyu shawarma wrap, lemon garlic wings, and shawarma eggrolls next time! Food: 10/10 fresh, hot, juicy, and delicious Customer Service: 7/10 it's a food truck so it's fast and efficient Parking: 5/10 street parking mainly, only two parking spots available in front of the liquor store.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to trying this food spot, but my experience was that it was overly hyped. I got the chicken and beef shawarma plate for about $20 and it really didn't have a huge portion of meats. I felt the meat was a bit dry and could've used more sauce. There was a small drizzle of the garlic sauce on top of the meat. The tabouleh and rice were ok. Hummus was average, but the sides of pita were extremely dry and not even warm (although they were served in foil). My husband got the beef shawarma pita and also said it was just average. I liked the falafel, but overall I was disappointed in my dining experience. Note they do not have any seating and are located in a liquor store parking lot. They have two small bar type tables to stand at, but those were taken on a Friday evening. We waiting about 10 minutes for our food after ordering without there being a line. The menu also differed from what was on their website, so note they didn't have any bowls (on plate entrees) on the menu in person. There are other Mediterranean spots I prefer over visiting here again.

Yelp
Our first time trying Shawarma Guys, we went to the new Mira Mesa location that just opened up. Unfortunately, we did not have the best experience there with the taste of food. After the owner had reached out to recomp our meal, we decided to try out the original food truck location and give it another try! * Wagyu Beef & Chicken Shawarma Plate - 8/10 (this time around, the beef shawarma was actually really good. it was flavorful & juicy. this was a pleasant surprise & was what we were expecting the beef to taste like the first time around. the chicken however, was still on the dry side. the hummus was very yummy. it was light but also packed a nice punch & went really well with the shawarma. the tabouli was very fresh & added a nice little kick. the pita was dry & cold. overall, this was better than our previous experience, but would not come back for the plate) * Wagyu Beef Shawarma Egg Rolls - 9.5/10 (this was fried to perfection with the perfect crunch on the outside. the beef was soooo juicy & packed great flavor. the white sauce was perfect to cut through the oiliness. would come back again just for these!)

Yelp
Honestly very underwhelming compared to the reviews that brought me here. I had been wanting to try this place for a long time. The ordering process was fine and the wait wasn't too long. I ordered the beef & chicken shawarma plate, a fattoush wrap, and a side of fries. The fries were subpar, warm but not hot, nothing special. The wrap had way too much lemon juice that was overpowering and really the only thing I could taste. The best part of the plate was the hummus, but the rest wasn't anything special and I didn't end up finishing it. Not worth $40, no plans to return.

Yelp
Lived up to the hype. Incredible and reasonably priced. Have to try to Iraqi salad and baklava!

Why-Tie Z.

Yelp
Came here due to the yelp top100 hype. As much as I would love to give a better review or rating. I can't. For $21 the plate I found the chicken and beef not juicy and tasty enough. I was a bit disappointed about the meal.
google avatar

Gabriela E.

Yelp
Big portions! Quick service and so tasty, but on the pricier side. We ordered the fries with chicken, and the beef shawarma plate and dolmas. Fries were our favorite with good sauces and the wagyu beef was very flavorful.

Yelp
Finally checked this food truck off my must try list and it didn't disappoint! Ambience: This is definitely more of a grab and go spot. There are only a couple of high top tables, so I'd recommend ordering ahead and picking up your food. Parking can be a bit tricky, but the truck is conveniently located in a lot shared with a convenience store where you can grab a drink since they don't sell beverages themselves. Service: There was a small line when we arrived, but ordering was quick and straightforward. The food took a little time to come out but nothing unreasonable. Food: Let's get to the good part, the food. First up was the egg roll, which was stuffed with wagyu beef and absolutely packed with flavor. The sauce paired perfectly with the rich meat. I also tried the wings and they were super flavorful and well seasoned. The plate came with rice, hummus, and tabouli, all incredibly fresh and well balanced. You can really taste the quality in each bite. Overall: Yes, it's a bit on the pricey side but you're getting wagyu beef and generous portions so it feels worth it. I will definitely be back to try a wrap or pita sometime soon.

Yelp
Not my first rodeo at Shawarma Guys, but it is the first time I've been back since I started Yelp. And luckily I think I found the menu item I've been waiting for: Greek Wrap sub chicken for falafel. (The 5stars is based on this wrap alone) Wow wow. It was huge! So juicy from all the sauces. The falafel was moist! It lasted me two meals it was so big. Now I know to go into it with someone to share it with since it's best fresh. My partner ordered the wagyu and chicken plate and the lemon chip fries (to share, but I was too full to try too much). The chicken on top was good, but the fries were a little lacking in flavor and texture. It only takes us 5 ish minutes to get home so maybe we have to eat the fries right next to the truck next time. But the star of the show is that wrap and it deserves to be seen!

Yelp
Very excited to finally try Shawarma Guys and got a variety of things to try. Service was friendly and it took about 10 minutes for our food to be ready. The Wagyu Beef & Chicken Shawarma plate was packed with flavor. The wagyu beef was the highlight. Very very tender. The chicken on the other-hand was a bit dry. I was hoping that both meats would actually be more juicy and moist, but between the two I definitely recommend the beef. The hummus and tabouli sides were also nice accompaniments. I also do think they need to give extra garlic sauce on top or on the side since by the end, it does get a bit more dry. We also got the Greek Wrap and substituted falafel as the protein. This wrap was HUGE and the falafel was really really good. I think this wrap was actually better than the plate. Next time I'd definitely get a wrap or pita to see how those are. The Lemon Cream Chop Fries were also a generous portion. I liked the lemony flavor overall but I felt overall the fries were just okay. It's not that creamy and so the fries end up being more dry and I found myself needing to sip water after every bite. A little more moisture in the form of cream or something else would help a lot.

Yelp
Total spur of the moment, but super happy to have stopped by. Got the waygu egg rolls, FIRE! Also the chicken shawarma wrap, BOMB! Totally glad I saw the Iraqi salad, so fresh and bursting with flavor. I added it to my wrap, next level elevation for sure. BYOD or there is a store like 10 feet away. I can not wait to go back.... I will be trying the lemon cream chopped fries and the chicken cream chop plate. JP

Yelp
This place is so good!! Someone told me to come here and it was definitely worth it!! They park in a parking lot of a liquor store and you order and wait for your food out of a food truck. Everything was pretty tasty. I got the combo which is a beef and lamb meat with chicken as well. The only thing I wish I got more of the garlic sauce because it was so good and I didn't have enough to spread over the entire dish. The hummus and tabouli were great to select as sides. Everything was very flavorful and I'll definitely come back when I'm in the San Diego area !
google avatar

Kristian T.

Yelp
It's rare that in one bite I am held speechless but this was the case. The Greek wrap was a full salad with chicken in a tortilla, the flavor was perfect. I also had the beef eggrolls but they were so rich I was afraid I wouldn't be able to eat all four. I found the solution and opened up the wrap and added three egg rolls and rewrapped it. The combination was amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
Came on a lucky Saturday and no lines! I lived west Asia for years so I had really high hopes for this place and expected nothing but the best but honestly I was let down. Was the food good? YES, it good but not great or something astronomical. The meat was pretty dry and salty and everything just didn't mash well. Service was really fast nevertheless
google avatar

Yelp
I was SHOOK at how delicious this place actually is. As someone with Lebanese/Syrian/Armenian roots, I have high standards when it comes to any middle eastern food and restaurant. Most places skimp on the flavor and spices to appease the "western" palette, while others are lazy in the process of crafting the foods with the traditions that are needed to uphold quality. Shawarma Guys not only keeps that flavor profile and preparation standards, but they also elevate it to a whole new level for Californians and foodies in general. Staff was super friendly and offered great recommendations. First up - the Wagyu Shawarma Egg Rolls. WOW. WOW. WOW. The egg rolls are SO crunchy and crispy, and great sized. They are FILLED with juicy, crispy, soft flavorful shawarma meat, plenty of cheese, and the toum is perfection. Seriously, I could eat these every day. Now for the California shawarma. I had no idea this thing was the size of a baby burrito, honestly I couldn't even finish it after eating the egg rolls, but man it was so damn good I would've finished it if I wasn't on my way to an event. This was filled with chicken shawarma, fries, lettuce, pickles, rice, garlic paste, tortila. Although it was excellent, I think it would be even more excellent with the beef shawarma. The chicken was soft and flavorful, the rice was amazing, crispy fries, fresh veggies, crunchy pickles, and again that amazing garlic paste. Seriously, this place is a must on anyone's SD food visits.
google avatar

Yelp
Best shawarma ever! Guy Fieri, an American Treasure, was right again. Get yourself to this semi-permanent food truck and get a shawarma platter. I had chicken and wagyu beef. Perfect crisp, great sauces, can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Bee K.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The Lemon cream fries were so good loved the sauce.THE EGGROLLS. those were the best thing out of everything. amazing filling, fried to perfection and loved the sauce on top. The shawarma was good! Definitely not the highlight, but still a good basic.
google avatar

Nishtha C.

Yelp
Went to this place with very high hopes. The chicken shawarma pita and falafel pita along with baklava. None of these items were very good compared to shawarma we have tried around the country. The baklava was very dry and not flaky.

Mary Lou D.

Yelp
I've been coming here for many years. My rating is dropping - had the beef shawarma plate - beef and rice are too oily, not enough beef and the rest is rice, hummus is good but tabbouli is just okay, half pita isn't enough - used to come all the time, now not so much...
google avatar

Spock S.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place after seeing so many rave reviews, especially about the egg rolls. I got the egg rolls since I saw a bunch of posts saying how good they were. I figured I'd grab a dozen to use as an appetizer for a small get-together. Unfortunately, they were a huge letdown. These were so bad--greasy to the point of being soggy, like they had been fried three times. The texture was off, and worst of all, there was just no flavor. It honestly felt like they had been sitting around for a while before being reheated. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day, but based on this experience, I won't be ordering the egg rolls again. Or anything else
google avatar

Kristine C.

Yelp
It's a food truck next to a liquor store, so thankfully there was ample parking. I came 30 minutes before closing and was able to get my food within 5 minutes, so no complaints! Service was quick, employees seem friendly, but unfortunate that there wasn't any space to sit and eat. Seems more like a to go place. We ordered the chicken and beef plate and it was delicious! I will need to ask for an extra side of the garlic sauce next time!
google avatar

Abhishek S.

Yelp
This place lives up to the hype! I absolutely loved my meal. Ordered the Wagyu Shawarma plate and falafel. The shawarma plate was outstanding and super delicious. The meat was well seasoned and very flavorful. The salad was fresh and bright. The hummus was spectacular, with just the right balance between acidity and earthiness. The service was super quick, and the meal was reasonably priced. I know where I'm eating (at least) one meal when I'm in town. Well done Shawarma Guys.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
what we ordered | wagyu beef & chicken shawarma plate taste | good portion of meat. flavor was good. the veggie side and hummus was yummy as well. this had a drizzle of their garlic paste over the meat which gave the meat some additional flavor. service | server was nice parking | street notes | definitely check this out if you're in the south park area. they are a food truck close to grape street.
google avatar

Ed K.

Yelp
Disappointed this time around. Got the fatoush chicken wrap and beef egg rolls. 1st half of wrap was way too salty! Between the heavy sumac and salty salad dressing, I was thirsty all afternoon! Putting on some chili sauce, the salt bomb was every worse! I much prefer some garlic paste, tahini, and salad dressing light on salt. Oasis grill in SF has the best sauce combination. The wagyu beef egg rolls sounded interesting, but were way too heavy. I thought I was biting into a stick of butter! Definitely skip them. I'm gonna try the normal shawarma wrap next time and hope it restore my faith in these guys.
google avatar

Mai H.

Yelp
Tried the Wagyu Beef Shawarma Plate the other day. I had really high expectations due to the other reviews. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but not something I would often crave for. Wished they drizzled more of their signature garlic paste on the meat. Service was super quick. We got our order within 5 mins. If I were to return I would just take it back to my car and eat it in the car or take it home to eat. Total 3.5 stars.

Kaliko Y.

Yelp
I've wanted to try this for a really long time. Unfortunately, it was not as I had hoped. My off and ai shared the chicken egg rolls, chicken shawarma plate and a side of falafel. The service was pleasant, great options on the menu and food was piping hot. The plate.came with tabouli, hummus and rice with he shawarma. The chickengr is very salty on both dishes, the rice and hummus were delicious, helping to reduce the saltiness of the chicken. The falafel had the garlic sauce drizzled over them, which was a bit overpowering. It would be better on the side, I think. The tabouli was also salty. We could not finish the dishes. So sad.
google avatar

Jenna B.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place for awhile. Monday night crew was friendly and fast! Food was out in about 5 minutes. I got a pita wrap, and friends got plates. The plates were the way to go. For me, the pita wasn't what I expected - thin and a bit dry/crispy in places. However the meat was tasty, as was the tabouleh. Street parking in the neighborhood is easy enough. There was a standing table, but expect to take food elsewhere (two parks within 5 min drive are great options).
google avatar

Frank Y.

Yelp
Have traveled all over the world including extensively in the Middle East and would echo some of the recent reviews that food is good but probably overhyped. Found the location by random while shopping at Target nearby, and was drawn in immediately by the #1 rating from 2020. Workers couldn't really explain well how or why they got that rating but decided to give the chicken shawarma egg rolls a try. Wrapper was crisp and chicken was fresh, but a bit on the dry and salty side. Also detected a heavy coriander taste which made it taste more like Indian curry , not necessarily bad but wasn't what I was expecting. I'd come for the novelty if nearby but not worth a separate trip.
google avatar

Andrea W.

Yelp
I love their food but I suggest them to carefully pack the food. I had it delivered and it was so soggy. Salad dressing should be in the side and if you throw things on the top of the salad it will make it soggy too.
google avatar

Bruski N.

Yelp
We kept hearing how great Shawarma Guys is and we finally tried it the other day. Maybe it was too much hype but I didn't think it was so great. The Shawarma beef and chicken were tender and tasty but the rest of the plate tasted like they were premade and left out for a while. The pitas were especially bad, stale, and store bought. The service and staff were friendly and fast. Maybe we came near their closing hours but their food quality should never be aligned with their hours of operations. They should always be at their highest quality.

Peggy J.

Yelp
Idees at the La Mesa store was awesome! He got me signed up for rewards and walked me through all of the local coupons and savings - very professional.
google avatar

Daniella S.

Yelp
Second time here and I brought my husband. We both loved it , got the plate combo beef and chicken and it did not disappoint super flavorful. It's just takeout but there's plenty of parks nearby to head to for a picnic.
google avatar

Marissa P.

Yelp
I've been hearing nothing but great things about this place for years + I finally made it over to try it for myself. Let me tell you to RUN, not walk to this place!!! Omg, it was so freaking good! My first time I went I tried the half + half plate with the waygu beef + chicken shawarma. The second time I got the chicken cream chop plate. The shawarma meats were so flavorful + tender. The friend chicken was breaded + fried to perfection. The lemon garlic paste/sauce is absolutely to die for! I will say I've had better pita bread before, but that's literally the only "negative" thing I have to say. 10/10 would absolutely recommend! I went to the food truck both times but I'm excited to try the La Mesa location soon. Those cheesesteaks look amazing!

Lovre S.

Yelp
Food is good, the issue is the price & amount you get. For $20 & foodtruck I expected more. Barely feeds a person + no bread. Half of the plate is basicallz sauce, and the other half is the actual meal.

Shehzadi J.

Yelp
Got the chicken shawarma with rice. Chicken was ok, small pieces made it hard to taste the flavor much, rice had some crunch and not flavorful, hummus was not tasty. Not worth the drive to find the place.
google avatar

Ivan N.

Yelp
I hadn't been here in some time. I looked them up and saw they now had actual sit in dining spots not just the food truck I first went to on Grape St. I decided to go to food truck location. I ordered online and my food was ready to go as soon as I arrived. Like all the previous visits to this place I really enjoyed my meal. I always order the California wrap sometimes I add the beef. Like all my past visits the food was delicious. I will definitely be back and highly recommend.

Kalil H.

Yelp
Hands down the best food truck in San Diego, and arguably one of the best food trucks in the entire country. I could literally eat here every day. The staff are so friendly, and you can tell they really care about curating a great customer experience. The ambiance is very inviting. Since it's a food truck, there's limited places to sit and eat your meal, but I would eat this food standing up. They have a very diverse menu, and the food is really healthy. 10/10
google avatar

Kevin N.

Yelp
The food was bussin! Parking was iffy! Ya got a 4 soots to chose from. Best to order to go pick it up and ENJOY!

Ofelia G.

Yelp
Well worth the drive to get there and the money spent. Had the beef and chicken place and it was amazing! Very good portion I was able to have leftovers for lunch the next day. Will for sure go again and you must try.

KnoxAnn A.

Yelp
Great is not even close. Stupendous and wonderful. My mouth is watering. Find them. South Park San Diego
google avatar

Yelp
Reknowned as the #1 restaurant in the company on Yelp the hyperbole will be hard to live up to. The wagyu scharma in pit was tightly wrapped and bursting with meaty flavor accented with a sharp pickle. The pita was toasty. Really good sandwich. Worth visiting when in San Diego.
google avatar

See R.

Yelp
The hype is real. I got the fattoush wrap and it was amazing. It kind of reminded me of a crunch wrap because it had something crunchy like tortilla chips inside. The wraps are huge so you could probably split it in two and share with another person. There's like 3 parking spots in front of the liquor store the food truck is at and a couple tall tables. I got my food to go and took it to a park to eat. Will def come back.
google avatar

Roman D.

Yelp
The food is worth the hype !!! The foutush salad is bomb. Also the wagyu shawarma is really good too. The lemon garlic wings are really good.service was fast. Ambiance is more of a to go vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
shawarma guys always delivers!! served out of their food truck in North Park, they cater too! very succulent beef flavor, and great meat to bread+veggies ratio!

Yelp
The service was good. To a point. I LOVED my greek chicken shawarma salad. And the staff was
