Best Rainey Street Bars and Restaurants in Downtown Austin | Eater Austin

"Find oh-so-flavorful halal food from this location of the Mediterranean food truck at the Downtown food truck court. Try the beef and lamb gyro bowl, a falafel pita, or chicken shawarma salad — those proteins, plus steak shawarma, can be swapped to make any bowl, pita, or salad. It’s a fast casual-style spot, although not a chain, that’s fully family-owned. Takeout orders can be placed online or in person." - Erin Russell

I tried the shawarma over rice at their fairground branch. The ordering process was smooth and fully automated, and my food arrived within 6 to 8 minutes—a quick turnaround. However, the meal itself was not was enjoyable. The chicken felt like it was overcooked, and the hummus lacked freshness. The salad was very fresh. That said, I believe this was an isolated incident, as Shawarma Point is usually quite consistent with its quality. On a positive note, the dining area was impressive—upscale, quiet, and offering comfortable seating, making for an enjoyable ambiance. Love that they offer halal food.

I know that true shawarma enthusiasts and purists might tear this place apart, as what they serve is far from traditional shawarma—it’s more of an Americanized adaptation, tailored to local tastes rather than sticking to the authentic Middle Eastern or Mediterranean style. That being said, if you’re looking for a solid alternative to a sandwich—something light, flavorful, and a bit different—this is a great option. The flavors are well-balanced, the portions are satisfying, and it’s an accessible, well-executed take on shawarma for the American market. Service is good, though the process takes a bit longer than expected. The kitchen is hidden from view, so you don’t get to see your food being prepared, but the ordering system is efficient. They give you a number, and instead of calling it out, you receive an SMS notification when your order is ready—a small but convenient touch. We ordered the falafel shawarma, which was juicy and flavorful, though I personally would have liked more fresh greens to balance out the texture. Overall, if you’re coming in expecting authentic shawarma, you might be disappointed. But if you’re just looking for a delicious, well-made wrap with familiar flavors, this place delivers.

Google
Bro, that is the best damn hummus I've had in my life! I live for the different seed flavors in their falafel as well. Anyone talking smack about Shawarma is crazy. Their food is dope!

Small but great place to hang out

Google
BEWARE, THEFT / HIDDEN CHARGES! Shawarma Point added an 8% “service fee” without any signage or notification, and when asked about it, the owner flat out lied and tried to say it was part of the tax. Took several minutes of convincing to get him to admit there was an extra fee added. Then I watch the next person get the same charge added… so obviously he’s been doing this all night. Shady and illegal business practice. Oh, and the order came out wrong too.

For all the places to eat or order from at the Faregrounds, I wouldn't look in this direction again. Each time I've been at the Faregrounds all employees and people around in the atmosphere are happy to be there, I immediately didn't get that energy/vibe from this vendor. Nonetheless I was willing to order (which I shouldn't have) and just got a half-assed attitude from the person interacting with me. I just got asked what I wanted and asked for a chicken shawarma. When it was ready I was staring at my order while I waited an extra few minutes for my name to be called and get it handed to me. I was asked if I wanted hot sauce, which I replied, yes please. The worker turned and started putting some in a container and was holding in her hand while she started a whole conversation with her coworker and after she was done talking, THEN handed me the hot sauce... I address others with respect and was not given the same back. Immediately after an older gentleman was asked, "What would you like today sir?" I was not addressed this way and started to analyze as to why I wasn't treated the same as another customer. I will not make assumptions and leave this for speculation as I operate off of facts. Overall would never go back. My chicken shawarma was warm and not hot when I started to eat it, once I sat down outside. Nothing really to say positively about the food it was something to eat for the meanwhile but from the taste it was not something I would seek out from here specifically. Overall shocked I had an experience like this at the Faregrounds. I would recommend any of the other vendors if you value your time and want to be treated with respect; Not be ignored and leave feeling diminished. The ambience overall at the Faregrounds is amazing and that is why I rated the place with at least 2 stars.

It was average and lacked flavor. The pita was inedible.

Google
Shawarma Point is a must! The beef kofta is absolutely amazing—perfectly seasoned and juicy—and the hummus is to die for. Everything was flavorful and fresh.

Yelp
The chicken bowl was amazing + Sebastian and J were so kind! They are located at Other Racquet Social club and this might be my new obsession meal.

Yelp
I came to Austin for Sxsw and found this hidden gem walking to 6th street. I ordered the chicken shawarma plate and it was a hit. It was fresh and flavorful also hot sauce was fire. I also ordered the falafel which was hot n crunchy. This is by far the best food I ever had out for swsx. Amazing food and good service just make sure to ask for extra sauce if u like spice

Yelp
SLAPPIN!!! set the order to go and then he put the sauces on the side, extra protein for extra charge, but he hooked it up, great location too

Yelp
I discovered this food truck while working at Tesla. Probably one of the best days of my life!! The hot sauce makes this shawarma. It's like crack. I've ordered every single item on the menu and have zero complaints. Oh. And the service! Always friendly, respectful, and helpful. I actually came to Chicago and wanted to eat it here over local spots because yes, it's that good.

Lisa P.

Yelp
Best damn falafel wrap I've ever had. Had one 5 years ago when we visited Austin from Boston & finally having another 5yrs later. Shout out to Matthew - "wicked awesome" service!!!

Yelp
Came here after a night out in the area. The staff was super friendly and efficient in getting our order. The food was delicious and plentiful for a great price. My cousins and I all got something different and we all loved the food. The spice assortment is hilarious and delicious. I got the chicken gyro with brown people spice sauce. The chicken was so flavorful and with the condiments it was excellent. It was so good I almost got another to go! I would gladly come here again and again when in the area. Check them out!

Yelp
The only reason I knew what shawarma was before this point was because of the first avengers movie. Now after tasting this I realize why they ate this after they saved the world. It's a lot like a gyro, it looks like it, and as far as I can tell it's the same ingredients but for some reason this tasted better than any gyro ai've had to date

Yelp
We recently had shawarma point through our catering service (hungry) and I've got to say this was one of THE BEST meals we had all week! The meat was tender and soft chicken was moist and rice cooked to perfection. They even gave a giant bottle of white and red sauce! I will definitely be seeking out this place to get food here from now on and include them in regular food rotations at the office!

Betty N.

Yelp
Visited this stall at ACL and the people there are rude and disrespectful. Food was skimpy on portion size for what a festival goer pays. The behavior of the employees was horrible and they acted annoyed when asking for white sauce and red sauce..common condiments. I will not visit this place again.

Leslie R.

Yelp
A solid food truck. I ordered the chicken wrap and it was great!! Very flavorful and fresh.

Clayton K.

Yelp
Once upon a time Shawarma Point needed saved from the heat dragon so they called upon the refrigeration company of higher standards to vanquish this dragon before he lost his product. But to no avail did Shawarma pay their saving techs. Indeed they will not even speak to the ones who sacrificed their time and efforts to help. If they treat people like this you try to help them be careful, they only want whats in your pockets, not your hearts.
google avatar

Madelyn D.

Yelp
I got a chicken pita and dang it was so good! They literally gave it to me for free because I was hanging out and I guess they could tell I was hungry.

Yelp
Is it fair to review food when it is delivered late at night? I had a late flight into Austin and wanted something delivered just about the time I arrived home 11:30 PM. Shawarma was still delivering and so I ordered the Falafel plate. The ball shaped Patties are generous in size and perfect for a late night eat after an evening of drinking out on the town. Since that wasn't my goal, I was looking for something flavorful to mindfully eat after a travel heavy work week. Although the meal wasn't bad, it was underwhelming in flavor. The patties did seem more dried out than what I'd hope for yet I might chalk that up to the end of the day. (Assumption only). The white sauce didn't add anything unique to the meal. Maybe if I had more hot sauce, my palette would feel differently. It be a go to if I was starving and needed to fill a void or if I was out late needing to get food in my stomach to absorb a bit too much wine.

Yelp
Right on the corner of 7th and Red River so it's conveniently located. The prices were great and so was the food. I had the gyro that was brown people spicy. My only ding was that there was one guy working so it took a little bit of time. Worth the wait though!

Yelp
Food trucks are a must in Austin so I was on the prowl for something. Since there were so many halal carts around I wanted to try one and this was nearby where I was staying. First off, love the part of the menu where it shows spice level. No spice, white people spice, and brown people spice (there's apparently a 4th off-menu spice level which I heard about after ordering). Brown people spicy for me please! I ordered the lamb/beef gyro salad (staying low carb) so I can't really comment on the rice. The salad was fantastic though and came with a good mix of greens, olives, and feta cheese. Add to that the ground beef style gyros and I was good to go. Pricing was decent for the amount of food I got. Of course, I'm a quantity type of guy so more would be appreciated but it was enough to fill me up for under $10 and that's hard to argue with when the food is delicious. I'm not sure when I'll be back in Austin but if I'm in the area I'll be sure to stop by next time!

Yelp
We got a family meal when they visited our neighborhood. Everything had great flavor from the bread to the gyro meat. The flavor of all the dishes, sauces and sides were clearly important to the chef as nothing was overlooked and left to suffer the fate of being bland. They were very busy and forgot a couple of items and when we went back for them they made everything that was missing fresh.
google avatar

Georgina S.

Yelp
I usually don't eat Halal food, but this place is AMAZING! I got the chicken wrap with a pretty low expectation, but the first bite into it, I was in love. The meat was really juicy and every bite I could get meat and veggies, it was distributed evenly. The texture of the wrap was soft but not soggy. The sauce they use was unique and it wasn't too saucy that will cover the taste of the meat. This place is a great late night food place that you will definitely want to return.
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Ive been dreaming about falafel wraps since I got one a month ago. The chicken wrap is also solid and well seasoned.
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
I may not be able to eat Greek food for a long time. Falafel bites were like rocks. Tzatsiki sauce like a bad ranch. No dressing came with the salad, unless they made the white sauce a combo of ranch and tzatsiki ‍ Chicken and rice were sweet. Hummus wasn't too bad though! I've had better Greek food literally ever other time I've eaten it, which is a lot. Sorry won't be back.
google avatar

Soham R.

Yelp
Had the falafel bites here and they were crispy and delicious! Would like to go back and try their other offerings!

Dianna D.

Yelp
Amazing food with amazing quality. I've been enjoying Shawarma Point for almost 10 years now since it opened in 2013. My go-to order is Chicken Shawarma Wrap with brown people spicy and it never fails to satisfy my late night cravings. Employees are accommodating to modifications and helping with recommendations. I highly recommend Shawarma Point to anyone!

Dempsey J.

Yelp
Love shawarma point it's always a treat for me . ToNight I asked for the vegan option and the server said, oh you want lettuce? I said no I want the vegan falafel option. Guess he said ok and tried to make my falafel the spiciest thing ever, probs annoyed or something cuz he was on the phone. Gd I love spicy, like no restaurant believes me when I say I want spicy. I loved it tonight evens tho it left a lil burn in my mouth how spicy he made it. Thank you so much!!!! I'll definitely be back cuz this is the only time I've had this dude and he killed it thank you all much you the best dude on the phone with the spicy food.
google avatar

Yelp
Every time I'm at a major outdoor event in Austin, a Shawarma Point truck is always there and I always have to get something! The beef/lamb plate is my go-to but the pita wrap is also good if you want to eat on the go. You can customize your spice level from no spice, "white people spicy", to "brown people spicy". I wouldn't say this is a "must go" for Mediterranean/halal food in Austin, but it is definitely a solid option!
google avatar

Mariana P.

Yelp
This place is so quaint, unique, and has an all around great atmosphere. The staff is awesome lol, I had the plate with beef/lamb with the "white people spicy" sauce and it was sooooo gooooooood. Super good prices too!

Lauren P.

Yelp
Grabbed a family meal to go from one of the food truck that was in our neighborhood because my daughter thought the food looked good. She wanted the chicken which was too spicy for her to even eat. We also did not care for all of the cinnamon in the rice On the upside, the beef/gyro meat was good and so was the salad and hummus.
google avatar

Shauna P.

Yelp
Great! Especially at the end of a night! I got brown people spicy and it was just the right amount! Great flavor, great portion for the price.
google avatar

Gail A.

Yelp
Came here, because I was absolutely starving. This is a good reason to come here, you will pretty much get what you pay for. The food is OK, taste pretty good, but a little ho-hum. A little on the salty side, but way too much on the oily side. I gave it three stars because the wait was very long, the parking was atrocious, almost scary. Best recommendation is to just stop by this wonderful place if you're on foot, if you're not worrying about your health as far as salty and fatty food, and if you're starving. Thank you very much for satisfying a starving person's plight.
google avatar

William N.

Yelp
No question ask, this is one of my go to spot for a late night snack !!! I have tried alot of locations across town and this one always come out on top. The employees are very nice and accommodating to all my needs. The wait is never long (5 mins max) unless it's like 2 AM when everyone just demands foods (even then the wait is only like 10 mins max) The food always hits the spot for me. On top of that, they have a wide variety that will solved all your vegan/gluten free group problem. They are even vegan/gluten friendly. They are the best. I always come back to this location whenever I am in the area. If you haven't try it yet, I am really recommending this location. You will not be disappointed . The only thing i would advise is to know your spicy when you come here. Their spiciness scale is not your normal average spicy scale. I would defiantly come back
google avatar

Aaron A.

Yelp
Shawarma Point has the highest quality ingredients of any downtown foodtruck. The beef/lamb gyro wrap is the greatest ever
google avatar

Becca F.

Yelp
The good: Try the chicken plate (brown people spicy) and I highly recommend it! It's a generous size as well so if you're not very hungry it's good enough for two. :tip: add extra white sauce! The bad: in tiny letters in the side of the truck there is a sign reminding you of a $1 fee for all credit card transactions. It's pretty cheesy to charge your customers a extra fee for a CC payment! I would come here more often if not for that fee. Update: Was told by the owner that the $1 cc transaction charge was a rule set for every food vendor in their lot during SXSW. Customers will not have a transaction fee any other time of the year.
google avatar

Manuel R.

Yelp
My neighborhood got this food truck for our food truck Friday and I never have a problem! Well today I tried to order online and it wouldn't work, that's ok it happens I understand. So I went to the truck and told the guy hey it wasn't working and he's like ok what did you want I'll take your order. So I just relax and I'm a happy mood because I just got my order taken, well time passes and he asked me what was my name did I have an order and I tried to explain to him again what happen, his automatic response is well I am not Facebook soo. Then he starts to raise his voice after he asked what I would like and I tell him he already took my order and he continues to raise voice as I leave cause I don't want to deal with it. I am a huge fan of these trucks but he ruined this experience, I hope my neighborhood doesn't bring them again.

Kaitlyn E.

Yelp
If I could plausibly order the beef gyro every single time I was drunk and in need of sustenance I would. It's delicious, and full of surprises. The sheer naan that it is wrapped in is absolutely perfect. I happened upon this by chance and will not stop ordering them as far as I'm concerned
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible food, Extremely friendly service, and accurate descriptions of their spice levels. Best place to go to after a concert at Empire Control Room
google avatar

Jess B.

Yelp
Like whoa! I dunno if it was the awesome jams they were playing. The guys across the street dancing to said jams. Our reasonably priced street food meal. Or the two guys who promised it would be delicious, the same two guys who were so super nice and friendly taking our order and serving us, but I'm still impressed with my first (and def to be a regular) visit. Still salivating. The flavors were on point. *No pun intended. (; Thanks guys. I'll come back on a Tuesday... so its appropriate to play that catchy track.
google avatar

Rob P.

Yelp
Was it good? Yes. Was it overpriced? I think so. I guess I'm biased because shawarma is what I get for cheap when I'm traveling around Europe. So almost $10 for a shawarma seems like a lot. But it's a cool hip food truck (?) in Austin, so that's what you get. I was in town for SXSW and they didn't have a big line, so it worked for me. I'll be generous and give them 4* but I dunno if I'd go back.

Emily R.

Yelp
Cool guys that run the truck. I had the falafel wrap. A tiny bit dry, but overall really tasty. My roommate got the beef/lamb wrap, which was great and the fries are curly fries, which are always good.
google avatar

Heath W.

Yelp
The food is decent, the prices are ridiculous, I ordered a falafel plate, rice great, cucumbers 4 thinly slices, black olives 4, tomatoes 3, scoop of hummus, ok scoop, but add a buck, some pita, 3 small bite size pitas, another dollar, add a baklava 3 bucks more, walked out with a 15 plate with limited ingredients. Like I said I have had better. A sure sign of a failing business is how they treat their customers and what they give you for your dollars. It's not worth it stay away. All I can say is I expected better.
google avatar

Cesar R.

Yelp
Absolutely my favorite place to go eat. I've tried over 20 different locations that sell shawarmas and this one tops EVERYTHING. I even went to new york and tried their "famous halal" place and it was bothing compared to shawarma point. If i ever leave Austin this place would be the reason i come back. I also highly recommend the chicken shawarma. 10/10 Thanks for everything, you guys are great! -cesar

Yelp
This place is amazing! Me and a few of my friends went here and all the stuff we ordered was so good! The staff was so nice and friendly also, I love this place!!!

Yelp
They were a vendor at Phx Lights music fest. I got the brown people spicy chicken shawarma and it was so amazing I got 3 more that weekend.

Yelp
Def one of my fave go-tos for drunken late night tastey-ness. I like that they have a "Chipotle-themed" menu breakdown. 1. Chose a Wrap, Plate or Salad 2. chose your protein 3. Add ons? I'm vegan I always do the salad and the falafel! or sometimes the wrap. I always add hummus! Gotta have the hummus. I get it "White People Spicy" (Okay, this is kind of racist no? There's also "Brown People Spicy" I thought it was funny but one time some other drunk people of mixed race were super offended in line behind me... which got me thinking, I kind of agree. BUT WHATEVER I am white and it's the perfect amount of spice for me so F* it! Hahaha) Super nomnombomb.com
google avatar

Martini C.

Yelp
Open late. Perfect after a night downtown. White people spicy is hot! I can only imagine what brown people spicy is like. Talk about the ring of fire! But it is very tasty.

Yelp
Shawarma Point I wandered into your establishment during lunch for my Thai massage class. Why not? There are picnic tables, it's sunny and nice and I've freebased enough claritin to live in this city without committing hara kiri. I peruse the menu and order my beef/lamb shawarma as the plate with rice. I'm asked if I want it white people hot or brown people hot. Since the guy I'm talking to is brown and I'm white (like Jim Gaffigan Pale), I pause for a second and ponder the race relations debacle I'm about to succumb to. I begin to ask, "What kind of brown people? Thai? Indian? African?" I gaze to my right and see the thermometer and announce...make it white people hot, no ghost chilis for me. $9 bucks later I wander to my spot in the shade with a bottle of water. The guy comes out a few minutes later and casually hands off what could have been a foil dish of porn. Booty so curvy and round...oh wait, we're talking about food. Shawarma that's been on a vertical roaster and caramelized like the food of the gods it is. Marinaded in the spices and sauces that Sirens tended to while they washed laundry in O Brother Where Art Thou. The rice was a light yellow and each grain was unstuck to the next. It was like they all got together and decided they'd snuggle underneath this meat of love I could say love meat but that'd be gross. The lettuce and tomato on the side was cool and refreshing while the cucumber sauce was tart and tangy thus meshing a barrage or flavors and textures into a nearly ecstasy like experience that made me forget people were watching me eat like a hog at a trough. The chile sauce that came with was hot, think sambal but fresh. I don't believe this was bottled folks and it blended with the food just like all the other flavors in such a way that I wondered what culinary Motzart was in that food trailer figuring this out. I sadly finished my tin plate, considered licking yogurt off the pan but allowed myself tie to breathe. Another plate? I refrained, I had class to teach and it'd be too much in my belly. I looked at the trailer longingly and noticed that they cater. My only thought was how many more Thai massage classes would I have to teach to get them to set up outside of my home permanently.

Yelp
Good spot for some quick halal gyros. I got their chicken with salad and it was really good.

Rodney J.

Yelp
Shared a gyro with my gf, was very tasty but we both got lasting diarrhea and a queasy nauseous feeling, which so rarely happens to either of us. I've eaten here before and loved it but sadly can't say I will be back

Yelp
I ordered one chicken wrap, nothing added to it, last night. On the sign it says it's $7(ish) yet my card was charged double that...$14! One of my friends said the same thing happened to him. I'd have given this place 5 stars cause the food was great. But ya know ... don't mess with my money!
google avatar

Salman M.

Yelp
Hands down best chicken wraps in Austin. You'll be amazed regardless of what you order.

Valerie D.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I ordered the falafel. Everything was fresh and tasted amazing. Great portion sizes. Falafels are huge! Staff were super friendly and lovely!! Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Soooooo good but holy moly they don't joke around about their spice . Beware it gets hot
