Where to Eat in Manhattan’s Chinatown

"This Fujianese mini-chain with branches in Sunset Park and Flushing concentrates on homestyle cooking, with oodles of soups, stews, stir fries, and congees presented “in casserole” as the menu describes them. There are lots of smaller dishes, too, including pork tongue, pickled vegetable soup, and Shaxian peanut noodles, and you don’t have to look far on the menu to find variety meats." - Robert Sietsema

Got the Malatang and it was $13.99 per pound. They have different soup base such as beef bone, tomato, and spicy hot pot flavor. Lot of different noodle options, meat, and veggies. Friendly service too. I got the spicy hot pot flavor soup base medium spicy. Tasted pretty good just a tad too spicy for me.

The spare rib soup was great. Also enjoyed the hot and sour fatty beef noodles. The peanuts are nicely roasted. The shaxin beef noodle soup was also good. I really like the flavor of the beef. Their regular beef soup noodle is also nice but the noodles are wheat instead. Edit: they just added a mala rang and dry pot area in the back where you pick your ingredients by pound.

A small family run restaurant that I looove coming here to find a little piece of home. The staff has always been so friendly and kind, they also cook amazingly! The wontons are always a must get and I love their beef tripe noodles, their fried wontons are always a hit with my American friends, and honestly their little bowls of herbal soup is just what you need in the cold winters!!

The peanut noodles are average. The peanut sauce from the dumplings tasted different than the noodles. The sour and spicy noodles are alright as well. The price point is pretty affordable, but as a traveler to NY, I wouldn’t waste my stomach space for this. It wasn’t bad, but wasn’t mind blowing. I left the restaurant unsatisfied 🥲.

Shaxsin Snacks offers a delightful experience for those craving authentic Chinese flavors. A highlight of their menu is the Shrimp Fried Rice, which stands out with its perfectly cooked shrimp and aromatic, seasoned rice. The dish features a satisfying balance of flavors and textures, with tender shrimp and a blend of fresh vegetables adding both taste and color. Shaxsin Snacks delivers a delicious, satisfying meal in a welcoming atmosphere, making it a top choice for anyone looking to enjoy high-quality Chinese cuisine.

Family run spot with lots of great options. Fast service, extremely fresh, and very well prepared. Will be back to try the malatang!

I'm so excited there is a new, quality, cheap eats spot in the neighborhood. Not only that but they're offering different dishes than the other cheap eat spots (peanut butter noodles and dumplings). I tried the Shanxian noodles with soy bean paste and the wonton in peanut butter sauce. Both were excellent. I liked the noodles better because an interesting combination of texture and taste. The wonton I think were fish balls. And as a complete bonus the ladies who were cooking were super friendly and the service was exciting compared to the other spots nearby. I'll be back soon to try more!

I've been coming to this exact location for years prior to the switch over to this new establishment. Tried their fried beef flat noodles, and we were thoroughly unimpressed. The noodles were all cut up into little pieces, and their wasn't enough oil or color for what this dish is typically known for.

Yelp
Small cozy spot in the heart of Chinatown. I decided to come here to give it and try and honestly can say their food is very good! The prices are pretty cheap and I only spent $13 on some savory beef chow fun. I came yesterday around lunch time and it was not so busy but it is a pretty new spot. Definitely come here for some warm, yummy comfort food.

Yelp
New location of this chain opened recently in Chinatown - seems like they already have existing locations in Brooklyn and Queens. Great selection of dumplings, noodles, and rice dishes. Just a tad more expensive than other spots nearby like Shu Jiao Fu Zhou, but they do take credit cards unlike many of those competitors, so it's a solid option in the neighborhood. Pork belly and preserved vegetable (梅菜扣肉) set meal came with soup, rice, fried egg, and bok choy. Very tasty and good value for $13. I'd say this is the kind of lunch you'd find in a nicer cafeteria/canteen in many parts of China.

Yelp
Food 3 stars Services -2 stars Called to place in my order. My packed order has been sitting on the counter. Cashier did not check if my order was ready or not, waited 20 mins and decided to check dd the bags myself. Had to wave the cashier over to tell her that my order has been ready. No lines, just yell out your order to get their attention. Would not recommend to anyone.

Yelp
Hidden Gem: Shaxian Delight Review: Why isn't Shaxian Delight getting more customers? I stumbled upon this place by accident, thinking I wanted to try something new. What a surprise! The food here is genuinely delicious, and the prices are very affordable. There's another Fuzhounese restaurant right across the street, but this one isn't getting the attention it deserves. Trust me, come by and you won't regret it. The environment at Shaxian Delight is cleaner, and the lighting is much better compared to the spot across the street. If you're in the mood for some great Fuzhounese cuisine, give Shaxian Delight a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the quality and the ambiance.

Yelp
What went well? A lot of things. The service, the prices, the customers. And, of course, the food. The Shaxian peanut butter noodles can be ordered as wheat or rice noodles. I got the wheat and next time will try the rice noodles. Lovely comfort food. Who doesn't like snacks? Was having so much fun comparing notes with a father and daughter there, I forgot to take pictures.

Yelp
Pretty mediocre, it taste fine and service is about the same. The fried wontons are pretty good though, since only this place is chinatown has a thin skinned fried wontons where you can actually taste the meat filling.
