The Best Soul Food In Philadelphia

"We dream about the platters from Sheba’s Soul Plate so often that we’ve started licking our fingers in our sleep. Inside the tiny West Philly spot, you order directly from the counter, listen to something sizzling while looking at a painting of Bob Marley, and end up eating melt-in-your-mouth food. When we’re at the part-Soul, part-Caribbean restaurant, we go for the BBQ chicken platter. The diced chicken is juicy and soaked in a perfectly tangy, smoked sauce. They rotate their sides, but if their collard greens or sugary candied yams are available, grab them, along with a bunch of napkins.   " - candis mclean

The Not-Your-Average Philly Cheesesteak Guide

"The Jerk Chicken Cheesesteak at Walnut Hill’s Sheba’s Soul Plate is what happens when a Jamaican platter uses one of its three wishes from the genie to become a cheesesteak. It has smoky jerk marinated chicken, grilled peppers and onions, and melted provolone layered throughout. What we love most about it, though, outside of the charred bits, is it’s about as thick as a Kelce’s bicep. It’s one of those all-time great sandwiches you’ll savor as much as your last trip to the shore for the summer. " - candis mclean

Hidden gem! What a great spot. I got the Jerk chicken platter and Mac' n cheese. This is home cooking done right. I can’t wait to come back.

This is a really good spot! I went a couple years ago with some coworkers on our way back into town after a conference. We all loved it. I had never been before, but luckily I live in the neighborhood, so I have been returning ever since and whenever I do, I tell my coworkers that I got a soul plate and they are very jealous. I also think the jerk chicken cheesesteak is one of the best cheesesteaks in the city if you like getting a little loose and trying something different from the classique.

The best mac and cheese in the city! Their candied yams are cooked to perfection. The jerk chicken's seasoning is incredible and unique - they use a hint of cinnamon that adds a subtle sweetness, while the chicken skin remains crispy and seasoned perfectly. Portions are perfectly sized and they use sustainable packaging. Their menu is small, but every item is perfectly prepared.

Really amazing curry tofu, with sweet yams and collared greens! Excellent food! Interior was a little smoky and the food took a while, but well worth it.

I’ve visited Philadelphia from Maryland many times to visit my daughter. We decided to give Sheba’s Soul Plate a try because we enjoy good Caribbean food and the restaurant was just across the street from my daughter’s apartment. The food they serve is absolutely the best!!! The flavor is delicious, the spices are just right and not overwhelming…and the portions are enough for seconds and you will definitely want to eat some now and finish later!!! What you don’t see in the pictures is the delicious Mac and Cheese that is being blanketed by all the chicken, salmon, greens, and yams that we couldn’t wait to dive into. I only wish we had discovered the restaurant sooner. My daughter moved from Philly yesterday. Looks like I’ll have a two hour jerk chicken run in my future ;-) Small Restaurant Doing Big Things!!!

Ordered delivery. Everything was so delicious. This was the best barbecue salmon we ever had and the jerk tofu had amazing flavor. Gotta go again for the bbq salmon cheesteak!

The young lady at the front was nice. The restaurant was very smoky when I walked, like grease or something had burned. I got the jerk chicken cheese steak I had a lot of hard pieces of chicken in mine. Didn't even eat half.

I was complaining to my partner recently how take out every where is so bland these days. Then we tried this place. When I tell you we both looked at each other after taking our first bites…I didn’t know food could be this good. Huge portions and soooo flavorful. Made me want to move to Philly so I could get it whenever lol. Just make sure to order in advance. From what we saw, it’s just one guy in there doing everything and no indoor seating aside from a little bench. If you walk in to order like us, be prepared to wait a bit for your food.

Yelp
Sheba's Soul Plate is an unassuming, take-out only restaurant that hides truly delicious bites. I ordered the jerk tofu platter which came with collard greens, yam, and white rice for $14. There was a 25 minute wait and it is small inside, with only a little bench, so I would recommend calling ahead or placing your order ahead of the time online to prevent waiting like I did. The wait though was well worth it! The tofu was crispy and really well-seasoned/packed with flavor. The collard greens were soft and well-seasoned as well. And the yams were so tasty! For me, sometimes yams are too sweet but I felt these yams perfectly balanced the jerk seasoning on the tofu. This meal lasted me ~3 meals because it was very filling with the rice and sides. I highly recommend Sheba's and I am excited to go back to try more food options there soon!

Yelp
It was my first time trying the jerk sauce, I liked it but in my opinion it's a little too dry. I will definitely try the chicken with curry sauce next time. My son got the vegetable curry and it was very good.

Yelp
One of the google review's starts off "Lord have Mercy," and I must agree. What a phenomenal food experience. It is the epitome of hole in the wall. I thought I was accidentally going into the kitchen but it was the very small waiting room. We ordered our food ahead on the phone - easy to order, people were nice on the phone. Food was ready in 25min. Menu isn't huge which I always see as a good sign. We got the mac and cheese. Fantastic. Nice and toasted on the top which gave it a crispness and delicious and not overly salty or fatty throughout. We had the jerked chicken soul plate. Amazing. The chicken, the rice, the yams, the collards...all just perfect. The chicken had a great kick too it and lots of nice charred bits but also lots of juicy tender bits. Yams were naturally sweet and complemented the chicken great. I don't usually like collards because of the bitterness but these were great. Price was beyond reasonable for the quality and quantity of food (2 of us ordered one soul plate and one side of mac and cheese and it lasted for dinner for both of us and lunch for one person). Our friend got the jerked chicken cheesesteak and gave it 10/10. They also cater. Check em out immediately.

Yelp
Large portions, delicious flavors, and nice staff. I tried the chicken flavored with jerk and a side of macaroni. The chicken is shredded and appears to be dark meat. It comes with rice, greens, and sweet potatoes. The chicken has a delicious jerk flavor and wasn't overly spicy but also wasn't bland. I didn't need to add hot sauce for additional flavors. The rice, greens, and macaroni was great, but my favorite were the yams. The meal provided enough portions for two people and reasonably priced. The place is small for to go. They have a tiny sitting area so you can wait for your food but no seating for eating. I waited about 30 minutes for my meal, so call ahead and it will be ready when you arrive. I am planning to return again and support this soul food place. Definity give this place a try.

Yelp
OMG I was walking by this restaurant and smelled the good food. I had to stop in. I ordered the curry chicken dinner, yams and collard greens and rice and beans . Amazing is an understatement . I had never had curry chicken made that way before. It was so so so good. I'll be back tomorrow to try the mac and cheese. A MUST GO TO .

Yelp
The coconut curry tilapia fish was awesome . It was seasoned well, and more importantly, crispy on the edges, which I loved so bad.

Yelp
This place is MONEY! Call in advance. The curry chicken is so good.. coconut base. The owners are sweet and you can tell they care about the food. It's also easily two meals!! Come show them some love

Yelp
Food is great! My family enjoys the bbq chicken, salmon, and cheesesteaks. I enjoy the vegan options, rice & peas, veggie curry and greens.

Yelp
the food here is so good - we ordered the bbq salmon, the jerk salmon, the mac and cheese, and the vegan curry plate, and all the plates come with the peas and rice, candied yams, and greens. The salmon was perfectly cooked and lightly seasoned. The mac & cheese was baked - tender, chewy, cheesy, rich... the greens were tender and so full of fllavor you would not know they were vegan. The yans were heavenly. I''m not a big yam fan but I could not stop eating these (or the yams from my friends' plates). They tasted like buttery sweet clouds. Sheba's is take out only, portions are large, and everything is packaged in brown cardboard cartons. They have many vegan options.
