I had a taste for some roti and decided to take a drive to Pembroke Commons to get some at Sheiks Bakery & Café. Once I opened the door, there were plenty of people standing in line ordering and picking up food. Now I know what a can of sardines feels like, but with the place packed like this should only indicate that the food must be good. So while waiting in line to place my order, I did some observations.
The bakery/café part of Sheiks was small with a few table seating for patrons. Pastries, cakes, and sweets were neatly displayed behind the counter. There are a variety of West Indian entrees, appetizers, breads, and roti/dhal puri wraps all under $20. There's also daily specials from 11am - 3pm for $5.25. The employees are pleasant, and if you're known to be a regular customer, then the employees would strike up a small conversation with you...like island people would normally do when you haven't seen each other in a while. The line was moving steadily and I placed my order for two large roti skin to go.
I was told the wait will be ten minutes so I decided to check out the grocery part of Sheiks, which was filled with more table seating for patrons and a variety of West Indian products such as Milo, bottles of hot pepper sauce; canned salmon, mackerel, and evaporated milk; various crackers, mauby, sorrel, peardrax, vegetables, personal hygiene products, and frozen meat & fish. The roti, which was hot and neatly wrapped, was very good. It was cooked nicely and didn't have that doughy taste. I'm looking forward to returning to Sheiks and try other dishes.
