Detroit’s Best Taco Restaurants | Eater Detroit

"Shell Shock’d began its journey as a pop-up where founders Cedric Andrews and Danielle “Margo Moon” Bigham showcased their signature crunchy birria tacos using a combination of chuck beef and beef cheeks. Shell Shock’d has since found a permanent home in Midtown. Customers can order birria-infused Crunchwraps, elote-style chicken wings, chicken tacos, and queso. The restaurant accepts online orders." - Serena Maria Daniels

Where to find Black-owned taquerias in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Started as a pandemic-era pop-up in May 2021, the team of Cedric Andrews and Danielle “Margo Moon” Bigham grew Shell Shock’d Tacos into a wildly popular operation known for its signature crunchy birria tacos—Andrews swaps the traditional goat for a blend of chuck beef and beef cheeks to achieve a balanced texture. Their playful, birria-forward menu also includes Crunchwraps, deep-fried birria egg rolls, and chicken wings served with mini cobs of elote; they collaborated with local hip-hop artists and influencers to build buzz, landed pop-ups at the 2022 NBA All-Star Game in Cleveland and at Comerica Park, and even found a semi-permanent spot behind the now-shuttered Bagley Central. Bigham says the concept brings different ethnicities and people of color together around tacos, and with plans to open a new Midtown restaurant and ambitions to scale like major entertainers, they’re positioning Shell Shock’d to reach a much wider audience." - Serena Maria Daniels

No idea what I was expecting necessarily, but I definitely was not expecting this. Everything is very well seasoned, tastes great. Excellent execution. Cheapskate in me wants bigger portions but in THIS economy? This is par for the course. Congratulations Midtown, you now have a decent Mexican joint, sorry Veloz and Condado, this is how you do quality right. If you want something cheap go to Taco Bell, if you want something a bit more refined I’d come here. They’re offering 4 tacos for $20 so it’s not exactly the most expensive meal you’ll have but I’d wager it’s worth the money.

This was a recommendation from a friend last night but it was late we didn't make it. She talked it up so much that I tried it for lunch today and wasn't disappointed. I couldn't choose what I wanted to try so I went for the meal that had a little bit of everything (wings, tacos and corn). I even tried Jarritos Pineapple for the first time with my meal. I ordered online and grabbed it as a pickup. I was greeted with a smile. Food was hot when I made it home. All of the items were full of flavor. Nothing extra was needed.

Wow! We are at a concert in Detroit at El Club from Cleveland,, & dude from this food truck came over on the patio and asked us if we wanted to sample the elote. Heck yes, & we proceeded to mow the BEST ever smothered elote! He told us about the menu & if we were staying, would totes order! GO, GO, Detroit! I have included a before and after pic. I had to reapply my lipstick. 💋 5⭐️’s

Google
Way too overpriced. $6 for ONE taco which wasn’t even that good. Two tacos with chips and queso was $21.00, which is really wild. I was still hungry after this meal. I truly don’t know how the reviews are so high…. Maybe they’re advertising in the right places. I’ll never come back or recommend it to anyone.

Google
this place was great, the elote is the best I've had since leaving New Mexico. The crunchwrap with the queso was amazing. Been here twice and never had a complaint

Google
The reviews were great and I was staying nearby in an Airbnb so I figured I'd stop in and perhaps they were having a bad day but the food was not as good as it was when it was Alley Tacos. Pork egg roll... the pork had no seasoning and was nearly mush like it had been over worked in the shredding, also the egg roll wrapper wasn't quite cooked it was really stretchy and starchy. The service definitely did not come with a smile. The guy kept his sunglasses on the whole time and didn't smile once. You talked in such a low voice I could barely even hear him. Like he would rather be anywhere else or like he was high. The wait time for the food was reasonable. They were not busy at all. The prices are quite high. I got a combo with two Birria tacos, some elote and some elote wings or something. Skin on the wings was rubbery and there was too much cumin or something. All I could taste. Overpowered the mayo even. For that combo and the egg roll it was $32. I didn't even eat half of it. It was all really One Note. No real flavor or texture. Even the limes that came in the box had no juice in them. Made me sad because by the eye it looked great.

Super expensive. You first walk in and have to place your order at the counter. Then you could go sit in the dining area. Food was fast coming out. Four tacos for $20. The music was very loud like at a bar playing rap. Not my type of place to eat at personally but i wanted to try this black owned taco spot.

Yelp
I have seen this place on Instagram and I was so happy I could finally give it a try. I was not disappointed at all . The place is a takeout only place but they said they will be opening a dining area soon. The menu is small and simple but everything on it was so delicious . I ordered a Birria taco with the elote chicken wings and everything was sooo delicious. The chicken wings were crispy and it was served with elote corn pieces. I do wish the elote flavor was a bit stronger on than the chicken, but everything was still delicious. The birria was full of meat and the consumme was everything. I did take a bite of the loaded fries which was also soo good I almost took them from my bestfriend lol. And the crunch wrap is unforgettable . I can't wait until they open up the seating area and for whatever they have in store next food wise 10/10 Definitely Recommend

Yelp
Shell Shock's has some of the best tacos in the city! I'm always greeted with a smile when I come in and even if there is a line, addressed as I wait. This was my third visit and first time ordering the Smacho and was not disappointed. I've had the birria tacos previously and they were excellent as well. There is no space to dine in but we're informed that the bar right next door allowed patrons to bring the food in to dine so no big deal. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Space: Carry out order counter with enough room for maybe 2-3 parties to wait in line while the dining room is under construction. We put in our order and walked around Cass Corridor until we got the text it was ready for pickup. You can bring outside food in the bar next door, so we got drinks and ate in there. Staff: Very friendly and helpful! Food: Delicious! We ordered the elote, which came as about half a dozen inch-think pieces of corn; regular and pollo tacos; and my friend got the Krunch Wrap. I preferred the pollo/chicken over the birria taco. The best part for me was finding out everything but the Krunch Wrap was gluten free! I'd never been able to try birria tacos before due to this limitation, so I was very excited!

Yelp
Super good super fun fast and I enjoyed it a lot me and my friends sat outside and ate this on a glorious night after our college classes. It was very filling. This is all we got and we were very satisfied after.

Yelp
When I tell you the flavor on this food was a 10 out of 10 OMG! I enjoyed every bite. The sauce was flavorful. The tacos were stuffed to capacity. The owner took our order. She was extremely friendly! The restaurant is carryout only but they text you when your order is ready. Very warm staff from what I could pick up. Food so mf good we ate next door at Cobb's Corner Bar and ordered some wings also. Lol

Yelp
A few things were kind of MID to me with this place however I did not try everything. The service was the first! We went in and I understand it's a new place so it's not set up all the way. The guy was nice but unwilling to remove a sauce from a dish that my partner was not too fond of. Which in turn I had to convince him to give it a try because it wasn't mayo based. The man told us he would do it now cause we aren't busy but it isn't guaranteed for the next time( who said we would return) anyway. We got the chicken birria tacos $6 a piece and they were small small, we got the crunch wrap. Both came with what they call Queso cheese but to be honest we felt like the cheese had been sitting. Now on to the food. The crunch wrap which I didn't order but was my partners was outstanding. Nothing at all was wrong. But those tacos weren't at all what we liked. Minimum cheese chicken was dry. And like I said that Queso definitely had been sitting for some time because it was cold and you could see the separation from the pico that they put on top. I'd love to Go back and get some items that they advertise but did not have on the menu. Overall I'd give them a 5.6 out of 10 for now. Hopefully when I return these thing will be fixed and much better. I love to support black business especially in Detroit.

Yelp
Shell Shock'd tacos may be the best tacos I've have! Not to say I've had every taco in the world, but this is the best I've had. I've tried 90% of the menu, and it's all delicious. They perfect what they have, and don't try to do too much out sourcing until it's perfect. Love this place. Great service, great people, great food. Yelp
If you are looking for a delicious birria taco experience in Detroit. Shell Shock'd Tacos is a MUST!!! I became acquainted with the business through their various pop ups throughout the city last year. This location is theirs and offered to-go orders Thursday through Saturday. This was my first trip here. Margo is very warm and welcoming into the space. She makes each guest the priority as she is taking care of them. I ordered a set of three Birria Tacos with consommé and Elote (Mexican Street Corn). The aroma of the order wafted in the car as I got back in and the tacos were devoured by my cousin and I in a matter of minutes. I had my cousin to go back inside and order another set of three tacos. We could not get enough. It was the perfect start to my birthday.

Yelp
Deelish!!! Flavor and ingredients on point! The Biarra was soooo yummy! However, think it may be a bit too pricey? We got all three tacos... 2 were very tiny and one was HUGE (all $6 ea) . Probably will be back since we live close by.

Yelp
I first discovered them at a pop up shop. They now have a location. The food that I've tried is outstanding! In this order I have the birria tacos. They are sold individually or in sets of three. The set of three was $18. A little pricey for three small tacos. The flavor however was outstanding. I also had the elote wings. This is an order of seven wing dings flavored up elote style. It did come with two small corn pieces. This dish also was $18, also pricey , flavors just through the roof. Not shown in photos we got Elote, Mexican style street corn. I believe it was $12. Overall the flavors and service were amazing. Reminded me of being back in the southwest near Mexican border. The prices would be my only very small issue. This isn't Taco Bell though so ‍

Yelp
Diamond in the rough! Discovered this spot searching for something else, we decided to give it a try. The ground beef smacho is everything .....trust me! All the selections were perfect! Weekend hours only unfortunately but it's well worth the wait. Please check them out! They seem to get busy and you may have to wait unless you call-in your order

Yelp
Been here one time will definitely go back and that's just off the strength of the elote that they serve. The elote is actually 5/5 stars itself and the best I've had and I've had a lot from many different places. I got the pollo tacos and even though the topping they put on top made up for some of the flavor the meat itself was lacking flavor severely tasted like the mess had no seasoning. When I called my order in I ordered elote and elote wings and got a call back stating they had just ran out of wings which was extremely disappointing but it's okay. When I got there I picked up my order and left and was walking to the car and the chef stopped me and gave me a free birria taco w/ a side of consommé for the inconvenience. I was very pleased by this notion because FREE FOOD & I LOVE birria tacos. The flavor of the meat w/ this taco was lacking as well the cook of it was very nice but it lacked flavor. The consommé was very bland as well and just had a greasy taste to it and tasted like regular beef broth w/ the tiniest hint of flavor. I'll give them another try to get the elote wings though and more elote because that's worth the trip alone itself. Location is kind of hard to find because the door is in the back in an alleyway so it honestly might deter you depending on how that makes you feel. It's a hole in the wall but definitely give them a try for their elote. Besides the food, the customer service I received while in the restaurant was really good. The cashier was very outgoing and sweet and made sure to keep me updated w/ my order.

Yelp
Came to check out all the hype, this place does not even have a microphone system so the people have to yell your name. If you miss it, your food sits behind the counter getting cold. Not to mention that the prices are outrageous the food does taste good, but six dollars for a single taco? An iPhone is bigger then the taco... That's ridiculous this place is a one time visit.

Cristy D.

Yelp
TRY THIS PLACE OMG Wasn't sure when coming in but its more of a take out place. Does have some booths but we ate in out vehicle and cars were pulling up left and right. This place was awesome, ordered birria tacos and elote street corn my bf ordered wings and taco de pollo.

Yelp
Pretty overpriced, but extremely solid food. Would absolutely recommend. Really small so be sure to be ready for carry-out

Yelp
Headed back for my second weekend. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu but the birria and elote is exquisite. I thought I was going to eat one taco in the car and devoured it all right there outside of the restaurant. I love a good spot to call my own. Im a new regular!

Yelp
Absolutely love everything on the menu , excellent customer service. Staff very pleasant , The food is very flavorful .

Yelp
The food in this restaurant is great! This was my second time eating here I've been thinking about this place since I tried it last week. I can't even try to figure out what was my favorite because everything was good. I highly recommend you order the menu it's a sample of everything on the menu and it's enough for 2 ppl. I most definitely will be back again.

Yelp
Shell Shock'd Tacos is a must have. If you desire good food this place is for you. Southwest is a gem within itself. To add diamonds is something else. You walk into Shell Shock'd Tacos the people are so welcoming along with a very good vibe. If you desire great food this is the place. Tacos with a twist of Happy I call it. The fries are so amazing. I drive past the airport just to be blessed. Last night weather was so great I didn't place my order ahead a time.Got there the kitchen was nearly sold out. We got some smacho's and elote corn. To go to a restaurant where the food sold out, speaks volumes. This told me everything is fresh. One thing my heart desire is healthy place to eat. She'll Shock'd Tacos is a new eatery. So don't be upset if you ever get there and the kitchen sold out. Get there earlier my thoughts. The freshness is worth it all. Only open Thursday through Saturday. I wish with my food loving self it was in Belleville. I will be back. Good food I say worth my drive.
