Pizzeria Luigi Partners Up With The Balboa Bar & Grill in Sherman Heights | Eater San Diego

"Opened in Sherman Heights at the corner of 25th Street and Market, Sister Ray is a casual spot the owners of Pizzeria Luigi and The Balboa Bar & Grill transformed from an existing eatery last fall. With both partners tied to the surrounding community, the place focuses on classic burgers and chili dogs and is open Wednesday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Logsdon developed different versions of his legendary burgers for this project—using the same buns and 1/3-pound patties—while the menu also includes chili-topped burgers and hot dogs, a fried chicken sandwich, hand-cut fries that can be smothered in chili and cheese, and fried pickles. Nearly every menu item can be made vegan using Impossible burgers, Field Roast hot dogs, and Daiya cheese, and there’s even a vegan chili made with soyrizo and beans. The beverage selection includes four beer taps plus bottles and domestic tall cans." - Candice Woo

Beautiful community center hosting a touring group of musical artists was my first experience here. The decor of the building was thoughtfully designed and bathrooms were updated. Would love to attend another event here if the occasion arose.

Sherman Heights Community Center earns a few brownie points. Good location small but allows you to have a function for adults and toddlers A+. Facilities were clean, functioning, and accessible by all A+. I think it is a location that needs to be utilized by the community.

Thank you all for your comments. I am a legacy of traditional cooks in which my husband and I decided to undertake and showcase our culinary gastronomy of Michoacan MX.

We have rented the community space on the second floor for events and it is such a great space. It is on the darker side but it is simple, bare, and there is so much that you can do with the space. It is also very reasonably priced. They provide tables and chairs. They also have a kitchen and allow you to bring in your own food. There is an elevator so folks can access the second floor without walking up the stairs. Parking is also really easy.

I went to the Sherman Heights Community Center for their 2023 Dia De Los Muertos Celebration and had a great time. There was food, live music, various ofrendas and lots of people paying their respects to deceased loved-ones. It's a small center but most community centers are. A great place to host community events in the area.

Beautiful cultural center with some great events and resources. Definitely planning to go back to more of their events. The place is small but they manage to make the most of it. I saw flyers for some ESL and citizenship classes as well.

Yelp
One of my coworkers that grew up nearby shared the story of this historic center. Established in 1984, SHCC was created to serve the resident of the community, predominantly Mexican American. Providing health services, educational learning, the arts and personal development, SHCC is regarded as integral part of San Diego. There is parking, playground apparatus, a communal courtyard, gathering room with a kitchen and a balcony. This facility reflects the rich history and culture of the community

Yelp
I thought the Day of the Dead theme was left over from October, apparently this is their art thing since 10 years ago which is very cool, it does educate the kids more about the culture, this center is huge with 2 levels access by stairs or elevator. Great location to organize meetings, gatherings and such, they also have different rooms for workshops and classes, also a playground, many stuffs to explore here.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and I like what this center does for the community. The center offers several activities, classes and community support opportunities such as Art Festivals, Community and Holiday Festivals. I came by during a community festival with food vendors, community support leaders (CHP, several local businesses and a couple financial institutions had tents set up. There were some local craftspeople and artists displaying their work. There were plenty of contests, giveaways and activities for small children. Live music and dance performances were up on the stage and the vibe was festive.

Yelp
annual dia de los muertos fiesta - great stuff, food, music, and free. OK! and then easy walk to downtown, okx2.

Yelp
Super local dia de los muertos festival with locals serving tacos, homemade baked goods and beautiful altars overflowing with bright, orange marigolds. The sunny flowers lighten the alters of the young men who perished...too many. Artist sold graphic t-shirts, one-of-a-kind styles at ridiculously low prices. Children made alter crafts and painted their faces like cherubic skeletons. Less somber than mission day of the day festivals, and located in a gorgeous, victorian neighborhood. Music was pounding, couples dancing and the sun shined. This neighborhood community center is a very bright spot in a warm and welcoming community.

Yelp
The community organization #CBO Comunitarias thanks Sherman Heights Community Center for the support given to our youth with the Workshop THE ROAD TO COLLEGE where out youth received information about their future college path. Many thanks to its director and Dulce for all the support! This place is truly a place for community.

Yelp
Attended a party here, great venue. It has a big dance floor in the middle they rent with round and rectangle tables. Also has a small kitchen which can be used. Very accessible close to downtown, would keep this place in mind for future events.
