Shih Chia Big Rice Ball

"Founded in the 1960s, Shih Chia is synonymous with savoury glutinous rice balls with juicy pork and vegetable filling in Miaoli Hakkanese style. The second-generation owner strictly follows his mother's recipe and uses only year-old, round-grain sticky rice to make the toothsome elastic dough; the broth seduces with the umami of bonito flakes and the tangy depth of preserved cabbage. There are also snacks from Fujian and other Chinese provinces." - Michelin Inspector

Went by and saw a line so I joined. The line moved quickly and you order your food in advance so you won't have to wait long for it. It's very cheap for what you get. Very tasty. I took 3 of the recommended dishes, it cost about 200$ and was VERY satisfying.

Shi’s Fresh Meat Tangyuan – A Taipei Classic with Michelin Bib Gourmand Warmth Founded in 1964, **Shi’s Fresh Meat Tangyuan** has been delighting diners for over six decades. It’s more than just a local favorite—it’s a must-visit for travelers seeking authentic Taiwanese flavors. Thanks to its signature **savory meat-filled tangyuan**, Shi’s has earned the **Michelin Bib Gourmand** distinction for consecutive years, becoming a proud representative of Taiwan in the international dining scene. **The Cultural Roots of Tangyuan** In Chinese culture, tangyuan symbolizes unity and completeness, traditionally enjoyed during festivals like the Lantern Festival and Winter Solstice. Shi’s breaks seasonal boundaries, offering this comforting treat year-round. Unlike the sweet dessert version, their tangyuan is **savory**, with soft, chewy glutinous rice skins encasing juicy pork, served in steaming hot broth—both deeply traditional and uniquely Taiwanese. **Signature Dish: Fresh Meat Tangyuan** Shi’s uses **pure glutinous rice** for the skin—no added starch—giving it a tender yet chewy texture. The filling features premium **Taiwanese black pork**, slow-sautéed to release its aroma, then seasoned to perfection. Bite into one and the savory juices burst out, a flavor experience that keeps loyal customers coming back. **Other Must-Try Dishes** * **Mushroom Pork Rice** – Fragrant braised mushrooms and pork over perfectly cooked rice, simple yet satisfying. * **Sesame Noodles** – Springy noodles coated in rich, nutty sesame sauce, a Taiwanese comfort food classic. * **Buddha Jumps Over the Wall** – A luxurious, slow-simmered soup made with premium ingredients, warming both body and soul. **Local Spirit, Global Recognition** The Michelin Bib Gourmand award recognizes not just Shi’s craftsmanship, but its **value, flavor, and cultural significance**. There’s no elaborate plating here—just time-honored skill and a taste of history, each bowl offering a journey through Taiwan’s culinary heritage. 📍 **Address**: No. 73, Section 2, Guiyang Street, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City ⏰ **Hours**: 10:00–21:00 (Closed Tuesdays)

One of Michelin B Gourmet that really rare and unique. Meat Glutinous ball with bone broth soup. Usually glutinous ball is dessert type. This one is considered main dish or appetizers and reviewed and recommended on Michelin’s Guide. Love the taste and the glutinous rice ball really soft and delicious. Meat ball is juicy and tender. Soup also very rich and thick. Recommended and if you visit this place be careful there are a lot of interesting stall also. So dont fulfill your stomach only at 1 stall

The food was all really delicious! The 湯圓 was really really special and the tofu with 皮蛋 was also delicious. Also definitely recommend the signature noodles!

I was absolutely blown away by this incredible restaurant! The meat rice ball was excellent, perfectly complemented by a vibrant, flavorful soup. It was my first experience with such unique cuisine. The menu boasted a lineup of signature dishes that were equally mouthwatering, including the Buddha jump wall, signature noodles, spicy wontons, and the wine-soaked chicken drumsticks. The latter was the most delicious wine-soaked chicken on this Taipei trip. The only challenge was that the order sheet was in Chinese, but thankfully, a kind staff member helped me write it. I can't wait for my next visit to dive into even more of their food!

Everything we ordered is everyone's must order items. It was tasty but nothing special. The noodles were too soft for my liking. The rice ball filled with mince, the texture is more like the bouncy meat ball rather than a typical meat ball.

Recommend the sticky rice balls with pork stuffing, the Buddha Jumps Over the Wall soup, and the chewy pork which is diaphragm. This family-owned restaurant specializes in traditional Taiwan-Hakka cuisine, using fresh local ingredients and slow-broiling their broth for hours to enhance the flavor. Eat-like-local place!

We went during lunchtime, and the line moved relatively quickly. We only waited for about 15 minutes. The big meat rice ball is quite special, something I had never tried before, but it's really large, so I recommend sharing it with someone. Also, don't forget to order the spicy wontons, they're delicious!
