The Best Cookies in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"Hana Yohannes started serving tender cakes and stellar Pop-Tarts out of a little house in the Central District in 2020, but the business expanded when it moved into its new home in the Pike/Pine corridor in 2024. Shikorina’s expansion brought in a new line of cookies, with the house special bebere caramel cookies ranking as one of the best and most unique cookies in the city. A soft and chewy cookie dough gets a nutty edge with the addition of crushed walnuts, all of which gets wrapped around a runny caramel filling made fragrant by Ethiopian berbere spice mix. The ginger and licorice-y fenugreek stand out, with a creeping chili coming up from behind, making for a unique eating experience. Also try out the chai-spiced oatmeal white chocolate and floral honey-spiked snickerdoodles." - Kurt Suchman

Seattle’s 2025 Restaurant Minimum Wage Increase Could Upend the Industry | Eater Seattle

"At Shikorina Bakeshop, owner Hana Yohannes pays her two employees $25 an hour; the four-year-old business recently moved to Capitol Hill, and Yohannes says she’s had to raise prices and then lower them when sales fell, still struggling to find a pricing balance and to get customers in the door." - Harry Cheadle

The Best Pies in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"Shikorina Pastries is a community-driven bakery in the heart of the Central District. Its classic apple, pumpkin, and berry pies will fit into any holiday dessert spread, but the Pop-Tart-style handpies are the real star. Rotating flavors include salted caramel apple, strawberry, and fresh blueberry matcha and can be bought individually or up to a whole dozen, so they’ll be enough for everyone at your holiday gatherings." - Kurt Suchman

Google
I've been trying a lot of chocolate chip cookies in Seattle, and these are the best ones I've had so far. I usually prefer my cookies to be a bit more on the crispy side, but the balanced and nostalgic flavor of these is so on point and a relief from the overly processed and homogenous dough used at other cafes and bakeries. The owner is friendly and welcoming, as is the space itself. Highly recommended!

Google
Curious about “Berber walnut caramel” and it turned out so good! The caramel sauce inside the cookie was somehow savory with a slight hint of cumin, and pleasantly sweet-salty, which could be so addictive. I think it’s worth to stop by picking up this unique cookie.

Google
Shikorina is a true treasure! The cookies are unbelievably delicious — perfectly baked, rich, and full of flavor. You can tell so much love goes into every batch. And the owner is an absolute sweetheart! Her kindness, passion, and welcoming energy make every visit special. It’s rare to find a place where the treats are this good and the heart behind the business shines so brightly. Highly recommend stopping by — your taste buds will thank you!

Google
This is such a cute cafe in Cap Hill. They have a variety of pastries and drinks to choose from. They also offer board games and 2 levels of seating. The barista was super sweet to us and helped with any questions we had. I definitely recommend!

Norissa W.

Google
1000/10 Hanna is amazing! I love the baked goods! Matcha & Coffee is amazing! So much attention to detail.

Malika D.

Google
We got the berry toaster pastry, the apple version as well, chocolate chunk, blueberry 🫐 muffin, vegan banana bread and the Indian spiced stuffed cookie. Everything is delicious 😋 our blue-hair server was friendly and recommended their favorites! Plus as a fellow baker I appreciate the quality!

Steve D.

Google
My gf ordered a vegan cake and I picked it up. The shop was closed but they were satisfying to go orders. You could tell the owner put her heart and soil into the place. She was so sweet and gave me instructions on how to best preserve the cake before a birthday dinner. The cake was as delicious as it was visually stunning. I plan on going back to stuff my face sometime soon!

Google
Amazing. I got 2 cookies, a brownie, and a vegan pop tart to share with family. The flavors were incredible and unlike any pastries I've had. The texture of everything was spot on. I was really impressed by the pop tart. It perfectly nailed the flavor of a classic brown sugar cinnamon pop tart while also improving on it because the pastry is so light and flaky, it was amazing. Will definitely come back whenever I'm in Cap Hill.

Varsha R.

Yelp
Phenomenal desserts!!! The blueberry matcha pastry is so buttery and flaky and has the perfect amount of sweetness. Hana threw in an extra one for me which was so sweet of her! I also got the cinnamon pastry and cornbread which were delicious as well. I was prepared to give up on trying this place, because of the relatively limited hours and unusual pickup schedule. I'm SO glad I didn't!

Yelp
Loved the multiple vegan options! The server was helpful and there is a cute but small seating area upstairs and a few tables on the first level. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
I love the new storefront on Pike and Broadway. It's light and airy with thoughtful touches, like coasters, softseating upstairs, and big digital menus on the wall. What hasn't changed is their delightful baked goods. Strawberry poptart and the chocolate chip cookies are my go-to. I believe they now serve Boonboona coffee. Hana is usually working the counter and baking when I've gone in, and she is a delight to chat with. Highly recommend stopping in for a treat, or slowing down and hanging out for a bit, too.

Yelp
Decided to get some treats at the end of the day, and opted for the chocolate chunk cookie with salt and the peppermint bark brownie as it was a seasonal optional. The service was nice and friendly and fast and the store is in a cute spot in central cap hill and bright. Overall we thought the cookie was really good and would, the chocolate chunks were really nice and big and the saltiness was perfect, overall an 8. The peppermint bark brownie was just okay though and I probs wouldn't recommend it, the brownie wasn't really all that great and I felt it was kinda dry. It was really cute but probs like a 6/10. I do wanna go back and try the pop tarts for sure

Yelp
By the time we got there in the afternoon, they were sold out of so much but you can never go wrong with a classic chocolate chip. And this one's a good one. I got to try their cheesecake too another day and really couldn't stop myself from taking bite after bite.
google avatar

Tiffini D.

Yelp
I heard about this place on YouTube and stopped by while I was in the area. The owner was welcoming and sweet. Her attention to detail and how much she cares about her shop and her customers really shows. My friend got the pumpkin spice cheesecake and it was delicious. We each got a cookie and were upset that we didn't get more before leaving. My cookie was the chocolate chip. It was cooked perfectly throughout, soft and full of high quality rich chocolate. I can't wait to visit Seattle again so that I could stop by!

Yelp
My husband ordered me a beautiful birthday cake as a surprise. The cake tasted very good and the filling which night have been strawberry reminded me of a pop tart! The cake was on the harder side (I kind of wish it was a little more moist and cakey) and the buttercream frosting was also quite firm but it held up well and looked really nice! I can't say much about service or ambiance because I didn't pick up the cake, but it's on my list to visit their cafe and try out their other goods!
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
Amazing place! Great vibes, delicious pastries, and amazing drinks. Probably the best lemonade I've had in the city. Amazing pop tarts too! Service was wonderful! I believe the owner helped us and she was very sweet. Definitely a must stop in Cap Hill!

Yelp
Super cute, popped in here to do some work because other nearby coffee shops were packed. Go early in the day for the best pastry selection, there were limited options by later afternoon but the blueberry matcha poptart was tasty
google avatar

Dia G.

Yelp
I got a slice of the red velvet cake with chocolate ganache and cream cheese frosting. Unfortunately the cake was hard and not moist at all :/ the frosting was fine though Maybe I'll come back for their other pastries but not for the cake.

Yelp
How could I NOT visit a shop which claims to have enhanced a childhood treat- the Pop Tart? I popped in the day the new shop opened. The sales team were upbeat and friendly. The ambience was relaxed, with nice natural lighting. Everything was clean and ready to go. I selected their Strawberry version of the Poptart. Delish! The pastry is similar to a shortbread but not as rich or dense. A bit on the flaky side. The jammy interior is plentiful and has a nice bit of tartness. The light drizzle on top looked just right. Definitely want to try the other versions now! I picked up one of the chocolate chip cookies for a friend (and because I have been taste testing chocolate chip cookies all over the downtown area). Vegan? Check. Gluten free? Check. Sufficient and good quality chocolate chips? Check, and check. My friend gobbled it down, but I was able to nab a taste. Great flavor! The BeriBeri caramel walnut cookie stole the show though. What an intriguing combination. I bought one for a friend and one for me. She sent me a text 2 hours later saying "I can't stop thinking about this cookie!" She was right. Another terrific cookie dough; substantial but still flaky. Very subtle caramel, a few walnuts sprinkled inside to tantalize your tongue. But the beriberi jam (which I suspect to be a strawberry or cherry jam enhanced with peri peri sauce) plentiful, with a light tartness and soicy kick to finish. It plays off so well with the shortbread. I can't stop thinking about it either... I'll be back for these again!

Yelp
I've been a fan of Shikorina's since their lovely Central District house. Hana is an awesome baker. I'm a big fan of her vegan, gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. They are some of the best GF chocolate chip cookies inn Seattle! My partner is a big fan of her cakes, moist, delicious, and flavorful. Plus, Hana occasionally has some surprise pastries in her shop, which is always a joy to discover. Her new location is Capitol Hill is also the perfect place for a coffee and sweet snack. The high ceilings and cozy atmosphere are a perfect match to her delicious offerings. The perfect place to take out-of-town visitors, as well as the type of place where you can be regular.

Yelp
On top of having masterful and absolutely delicious pastries, I love the intentional ingredients (organic, local, and/or fair trade) and general mission and thoughtfulness. My favorite pastries here have been the beef pop tart, cheesecakes, and the chocolate chip cookie with super high quality dark chocolate discs. The beef pastry is super flaky and buttery, and so satisfying and flavorful. The shortcrust is addictive! The cheesecake are smal personal-sized ones, but taste so good with fruit toppings. The only suggestion is that the shahi latte (spiced like a chai) is a bit weak the one time I got it. I would have preferred it with stronger spikes and distinctiveness since it wasn't clear to me how this was different from a regular (slightly watered down) chai.

Yelp
I ordered a cake for my wife birthday we LOVED it. I ordered a salted caramel flavor with cream cheese frosting and they paired very well together; if you like a decedent dessert this is definitely a good flavor! Also, the woman at the register when I picked up the cake was also gracious enough to build a box that was big enough to transport the cake in. I already plan on ordering something from this bakery whenever another special occasion comes up but the fact that they have a rewards points system for system for purchases is a great added benefit.

Paige S.

Yelp
Stunning pastries. From the muffins to the cupcakes to the cookies, this place KNOWS what they are doing. Easy to order and great communication from the staff. Will be back again (hopefully very soon!!!!) Plus they have great vegan and gluten free options.

Yelp
Service: standard Ambiance: open concept with lots of purple hue. Enjoyable. Food: for me, the sweetness level was too much. I do acknowledge this is relative but still prefer it to be on the lighter if not at least a balance of sweetness. The pastry it self, was very nice, I bet I would love their savory version. The crust of the pop tart was just perfection but was thrown off by the overly sweet filling. I think a mixture of a fresh tart fruit would balance it out!
google avatar

Danielle D.

Yelp
Delicious every time! Every pastry I've had from here is always delicious, both savory and sweet options. Super cute inside too. I do wish they opened earlier. There are ~12 other pastry/coffee shops within 5 blocks of Shikorina, and they all open at least two hours earlier. So the number of times I've walked past and wished they were open far exceeds the number of times I've actually been able to go in. That being said I'm VERY amped about their new late night hours on the weekends!!! I'll definitely be grabbing cookies when I go for a late night hot dog run haha

Yelp
We just got home after stopping here after going to an appointment for my husband in capital hill and let me tell you how good this place is. First off, the cute and light colors of the store front are super vibrant and attractive to the eye as soon as you walk up. They have a wonderful smell of fresh baked cookies and pastries that just flood your senses with delight. The lady that took our order was super nice and super friendly and was super quick too! I got the honey snickerdoodle cookie and my husband got the chunk chocolate chip. We rushed home to have them since is was raining a lot today and omg they were good. The honey flavor of mine really compliments the cinnamon and sugar flavors and the chocolate chip was super flavorful too!! It's a great place to go for cookies in cap hill for sure!! It's about $2.50 per cookie but hey it's not a problem with flavors like that! Please give them a try if your sweet tooth is hungry. We will be back for more flavors!!
google avatar

Chantal N.

Yelp
I have been here a couples time and I would say the pastries are good. I've gotten the cookies and the pop tart and I could not recommend them more. I have also gotten the matcha latte and I would not recommend that as it just taste like milk. Overall owner is nice but don't recommend the matcha
google avatar

Britt H.

Yelp
Friendly service and tasty drinks and pastries. I wish there was more selection of pastries though. I'll definitely be back here again and I recommend it.

Yelp
Lovely relaxing interior, incredible fresh pastries, tasty homemade syrups, and fantastic service! My favorite neighborhood cafe

Dee L.

Yelp
Wow! Hana is simply amazing- I called the bakery very late afternoon seeking options for a Birthday cake. Not only did she reply quickly, professionally, and kindly - she made it happen today! I am so impressed with her and her cake. You should order from her today- no hesitation. Thank you for a job well done and it was very much appreciated. Great success to you Hana ! The cake tasted amazing!

Yelp
Stopped in on a Tuesday morning and had a blueberry muffin and honey lavender latte with oat milk. Both super yummy and great service!

Yelp
The Masala Oatmeal White Chocolate Cookie is one of a kind. Ordered ahead for pick up and service was quick and friendly. Everyone at the office was wowed.
google avatar

Yelp
A fantastic indie bakeshop in Seattle's Central District that has quite the quality line up. No surprise that several products were sold out by the early afternoon of my first visit (12/9/21) Ordered three items to share with The Homie: Strawberry Poptart, Chocolate Chunk with Sea Salt Cookie, and Chocolate Chunk Brownie. A delightful aroma once the box is opened. Each are made with quality ingredients and baked with love! Just exercise caution dealing with the stairs to get to the ordering window. I don't know if there is alternate access if one is mobility challenged. One word - B R O W N I E. Get it. Rich decadent chocolatey goodness.
google avatar

Ed G.

Yelp
The place is nice and clean. I tried the masala cookie and still have to try the burnt cheese cake and cookie. The host was friendly and answered any questions you have.

Yelp
Shikorina Pastries is a queer, black woman-owned business. Shikorina means "sweetness" or "sweetheart" in Tigrinya. For Pride Month, the owner, Hana Yohannes, sold popular Pride Jars with browned butter vanilla cake with Swiss buttercream and strawberry jam in rainbow colors made from plant-based dyes. When I came to pick up my order, it turns out that Hana was sold out and was working on a new batch. She was so sweet (pun intended!) to offer complimentary cookies and new pick-up date/time for the mix-up. Eventually, I did pick up a Pride Jar and loved every moment of eating it. Since then, new cake jars have made their debut (decadent chocolate cake jar) and I hope to see more flavors in the future! You can place an online order via shikorinapastries.square.site, but be aware that sometimes pastries can sell out! They're that good!!

Yelp
Arrived little late in the day. Around 3pm. This was the only pastry location that had a selection, was open and in walking distances. I arrived, and the first impression I had was it looked like a little house from the outside. Very cute. I arrived, and it seemed like it was giving off a lounge, coffee, study spot. Inside was very stuffy and hot, it wasn't a cold day at all. I was the only one there. Female staff was there. As someone who is a visual person. I was unable to find any of the pastries available, and the menu was very hard to understand and read. When I expressed my concerns of not knowing what is available, the worker looked at me as if i was stupid and didn't know English. I realized the shelf was on the other side. I would recommend them removing that wall. When i chose the strawberry pop tart she just handed it to me, rang me up and left. I was left wondering if i was even allowed to sit and eat inside. For a $5~ pastry, i would expect better service. The pop tart itself, had a great outside crunch. However the filling inside was DEATHLY sweet. I even crumbled the whole thing just to remove the jelly and eat only the outside. Kid friendly i assume but NOT adult friendly. Won't be coming back.
google avatar

Roza G.

Yelp
I just got back from my trip to Seattle and I must say Shikorina Pastries was definitely a highlight of my trip! I ordered a vanilla latte(I'm basic I know lol) but it was one of the best I've ever had!! My partner ordered a London fog and she added a sweetener to it as well, I believe it was honey lavender. We were both really excited about our drinks. The star of the show was definitely the cookie we order I can't remember the name but it was a chocolate chip cookie with caramel and BERBERE!!! This was such a creative recipe and had our taste buds doing the happy dance lol. Last but not least the owner was so friendly!! I felt right at home knowing the owner was not only Habesha but also Queer!! Y'all please check this place out, you will not regret it!

Yelp
cap hill's cutest bakery with the best music! the blueberry muffins are a 10/10 and the owner is super sweet. will def be back soon!

Candy J.

Yelp
I had my best friend pick up the cake . Because I wanted to be surprised! Boy was I surprised after I blew out the candle!!! I was so upset! It ruined part of the evening because the cake tooooo sweet! Only 2 people ate half their pieces. The rest of us weren't able to! It was heavy and hard!Besides looking horrible! So disappointed! I have never paid this much for a cake in my life! And I will never go to their business again! No return phone call,no apology nor a refund! 'The SweetSide' has wonderful, delicious and beautiful cakes! Less expensive and worth every penny!
google avatar

Adelie S.

Yelp
Super cute shop located in what looks like the upper floor of a house. You order the pastries through a window but there's a bench outside if you want to enjoy your baked goods on-site. We tried the famous strawberry pop tarts, brownie, spiced carrot cake muffin and vanilla with orange curd sliced cake. They were all pretty good, although docking a star because it's pricey for what you get - the sliced cake was $8 for a small slice and while it was moist with good texture, the flavor was too mild. Pop tarts were nice and flaky. I'd be interested to come back to try the hand pies the next time they're back in stock. Worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood and wanting to support a minority-owned small business!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious baked goods, exactly what you want. Look no further. Sweet place, wonderful owner, and absolutely delicious baked goods. So so stoked they have cake jars. Have been looking for a place with delectable cake smooshed in with icing layered together, I could eat 15. So delicious.

Carly B.

Yelp
Such a sweet cafe! I would argue they have the best lavender lemonade in Seattle (strong take, but it's well deserved). Everything is made fresh in house, so you know you're getting real quality stuff. And they include living wages for staff in their prices, which I personally love as a customer. 12/10 place.
google avatar

Rowyn H.

Yelp
I wish I took a photo of the beautiful pumpkin bread and sea salt chocolate chunk cookie- but I promise they were delicious! The house roasted beans made for a delicious drip coffee as well. Thank you for sharing your inside space with us as well!

N N.

Yelp
Ordered a birthday cake for a relative's milestone (75th) birthday, and it was amazing - 4 layer (alternating browned butter & chocolate layer); dark chocolate ganache filling between layers; and mocha buttercream frosting (with frosting rosettes). The cake was beautiful, and each of its individual components, as well as the combo overall, was delicious - unlike most cakes we've had in the past, everything had exactly the perfect amount of sweetness and richness - such that everyone savored every single bite, down to the last one. Highly recommended - worthy of a special occasion cake. This woman really knows how to bake!

Maggie I.

Yelp
I highly recommend Shikorina! It is queer and black owned and it's rewarding to support a local business and contribute to its success (: Their coffee is great and they make their syrups in house! They sell a good variety of pastries and even ice cream! The cookies are delicious and there is a vegan/ gluten free option(: Getting a gluten free pastry for $2.50 is unheard of in Seattle! The people at the counter are always really nice and cool! It's such a cute fun place and they have sliding scale payment too!
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Customer service is great. The owner was serving us and she's as so nice! She told us how the shop opened in June during the pandemic. There isn't seating inside but just across the street is a cute open public seating area. We got the chocolate chunk salted cookie, the vegan triple chocolate cupcake, mocha, and chia with oat milk. I recommend all of it! The vegans triple chocolate cupcake was perfect, moist and light.

Pallavi S.

Yelp
We ordered a chocolate vegan cake with the chocolate ganache and vegan strawberry filling and it was amazing! Every person in our group loved it and even asked me where I got it from even though all of them eat dairy. I would recommend this cake without hesitation!

A G.

Yelp
I drove from the South side (2 hours away) because I had heard about this shop and its talented owner. I've heard of her story and her experiences with the Pastry Project, and I just had to take a visit. I was elated when I finally found this cute shop. Parking is not the greatest, but I managed to find some street parking. I picked up two strawberry poptarts and a lemonade. Hana is so kind--she made the lemonade for me right on the spot. If that isn't great customer service, I don't know what is. The tarts themselves are sublime. Not too sweet, not too doughy. Just chef's kiss! Thank you Hana for opening your store and God bless all your efforts and wishes. :)
google avatar

Andy Y.

Yelp
For context, I picked up an order through the Too Good to Go app. The business itself is located within a house, just in case anyone gets confused or lost. I walked up the steps and as soon as I entered the building and a team member greeted me and met me at the counter. I told them I was picking up through the app. They had it ready to go and I was in and out in less than 60 seconds! The treats themselves were absolutely delicious. This is a super cute (and black-owned!!!) business - go check them out.
google avatar

Isabella H.

Yelp
Continues to be amazing! My family has ordered about 3 or 4 celebration cakes, plus cupcakes and all kinds of other good things in the last 6 months. We are always pleased :) My favorites: salted caramel filling (just salty enough) malted chocolate buttercream frosting homemade strawberry filling + the chocolate ganache strawberry pop tart - a forever favorite pumpkin cheesecake - had this once, and it was amazing (and I don't even like cheesecake) So glad to have this wonderful bakery in the neighborhood!!!
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
This place is awesome!!! I had a brownie, cakesicle, cupcake, pop tart and ice cream from here. They were all delicious!!! I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious pastries! Purchased the seasonal which was brownie/ S'more on top! Amazing! Cookies were delicious also! A must!

Anthony N.

Yelp
I really hated my old crappy corporate job and the only thing that got me through the week were these cookies. One of the best cookies I've ever had!
google avatar

Jboogie L.

Yelp
I thought the flourless chocolate cookie with marshmallow was super sweet. The cookie was sweet too.

Serina C.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with their pop tarts here - the strawberry one is classic and the matcha blueberry one is delicious. All the folks I've encountered working here have been super sweet and friendly, too.
google avatar

Marcy S.

Yelp
I have ordered from here numerous times, but I was able to meet owner in person. She always accommodated orders if there was a mishap, very personable, and friendly. Vegan options are also available.

Yelp
My partner and I ADORED this cake, celebrating their new exciting job. I asked Hana to make them their favorite (red velvet) and decorate as a pokeball. She got this perfect little guy ready with less than 48 hours notice. Great communication and overall wonderful service. If you're gonna get a pastry, definitely support this black-owned independent business!!
