Minimalist design Japanese restaurant, sushi bar & sake lounge in Chinatown.
"What It Is: A casual neighborhood sushi place on Bowery Perfect For: Casual Weeknight Dinner, Date Night, Dining Solo Locating your nearest good, casual sushi place in this city is as important as locating the nearest emergency exit on a plane, and Shinsen in Chinatown is a new one to add to your list. When we went on a Tuesday night, there were only a few people in the modern space, but the service was friendly, and everything we ate - from the oyakodon (a chicken and rice bowl) to the 10 piece sushi plate for $29 - was fresh and excellent. The Verdict: A great sushi place to know about for a casual date or a solo meal, but you don’t need to stop what you’re already doing with your life to try it." - hannah albertine, bryan kim, katherine lewin, hillary reinsberg, chris stang, matt tervooren
"Shinsen offers a combo set with about 30 pieces of sushi, including toro, uni, and white tuna. At $79, though, it’s also by far the most expensive option on the menu at this Chinatown spot, and in the event that you want to leave a little for the sharks, you can order a very reasonable amount of excellent fish here for about $30." - matt tervooren
"If you’re looking for high-quality takeout that won’t force you to host a yard sale, order from Shinsen. You can get a $29 set with eight pieces including things like tuna, salmon, and other assorted fish." - team infatuation
"Shinsen is a casual neighborhood Japanese restaurant with quality fish for pretty decent prices. They have a few sushi sets (the least expensive one is $29 for 10 pieces), as well as dishes like oyakodon (a chicken and rice bowl) and a spicy tuna tower. Whether you decide to come to this modern sushi space for a casual date or just to have a solo meal at the sushi bar, expect to sit near several people who are staying in the hotel next door." - Hannah Albertine
"At 44 Bowery, a slim Japanese restaurant with sushi, sake, and matcha called Shinsen has opened." - Stefanie Tuder
