Where to Find the Best Kolaches in Houston | Eater Houston

"With more than 350 locations, this Houston-born chain has a fierce following for both its doughnuts and iconic sausage and cheese kolaches. Most recently, though, the doughnut shop has opted to switch things up. Starting in July, the chain launched a series of egg-filled kolaches, including an egg, cheese, sausage, and jalapeño kolache, which will be on offer through September." - Brittany Britto Garley

The 11 Best Kolaches In Houston, Ranked

"Opened in 1936, the Ella and 34th location of Shipley’s (often called “The Original Shipley’s” by its fanatics), is the modern Texas-style kolache blueprint. While the sausage-to-bread ratio here leans heavily on the bread side, the dough here tastes unlike anything else on the list. It’s sweet, creamy, and squishable with an ever-present thin layer of baking flour. Hot ones pull apart as though gently glued together. Somehow the cheese permeates every millimeter of sausage. Also watching kolaches get pulled from giant labeled warming drawers feels like being given a gift, especially after waiting in this location’s very long line." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene, julie takahashi

The 13 Best Donut Shops in Houston | Eater Houston

"With over 200 locations in the state, this iconic Texas chain got its start in Houston in the mid-1930s and has been going strong ever since. It’s a well-known Houston fact that not all Shipley Do-Nuts locations are the same, and this outpost off Ella Boulevard, where each doughnut is still fried to order, truly stands out." - Emily Bond

Google
This Shipleys for the win. We talkin hot out the fryer HOT N FRESH!!!! Folks who know...KNOW! It's not about the newest pretty locations. It be the hole in the wall joint that goes hard, has the best food and service. Old school rules. Basic is better...y'all better recognize!

Google
I ordered birthday donuts for my 6-year-old and her class, and the experience was quite positive overall. When I inquired about the donuts, the staff informed me that they could have them ready for the next day, which was convenient. The pricing was surprisingly affordable as they charge per letter, making it budget-friendly. To avoid any potential disagreements among the kids, I requested all sprinkle donuts, which turned out to be a great choice--kids really love sprinkles! The order was ready on time when I arrived, and the service was quick and efficient. The staff were friendly, and the establishment maintained a clean environment. Overall, it was a successful experience that added to my daughter's special day.

Google
The best donut shop I've ever visited, and I frequent many donut shops. Every time we visit family in Houston we visit this store. Only once has the service been less than superb, and then it was only because of one sour-faced staff member. The other employees more than compensated for their sullen co-worker, and that only happened once. Never had a bad donut here, and never had a bad experience.

Dee Lee

Google
The best Apple Fritters around! Donuts are great too. Offers drive-thru service and if the line gets 2 or more cars, they take your order before you get to the window.

Nope Nope

Google
I had to to leave a review after reading the weird bad reviews. 1. If you've ever worked food service, you know how it is when you're getting slammed for hours. And this place gets slammed for hours on end. So yeah you're exhausted. All these complaining about their service. They're just tired, phucking relax. Everyone takes everything so personal. 2. Those complaining about the taste or whatever. This is one of the best donut shops in Houston. It is the best Shipleys. Its completely unhinged and near psychotic to make a comment about the taste or quality when neither are an issue. Now if you never liked shipleys because you moved here from some Yankee state and miss the so-so food you were being served up there, then youre never going to enjoy Shipley delicious pillows of heaven. So however long you've waited to come back, if you didn't like them 20 or 30 years ago then you won't like them now. To come and leave a bad review because your taste buds are malformed is ridiculous. 3. This place is great and an Oak Forrest staple. If you like hot and fresh Shipleys donuts then this is the place for you. If youre looking to get your butt kissed and foul Krispy Kreme like donuts then this is not the place for you. Remember folks, its a donut shop. Its not Starbucks or River Oaks Donuts. Act accordingly. Remember, having champagne taste with beer money will disappoint ya every time. Temper expectations to reality and you'll have a great time every time.

Google
I love this location, out stays open until midnight and the donuts are always hot and fresh.

Google
You’ll know you are here when you’ve gone through the light on Ella and for some reason you encounter a line of cars backed up into the street trying to turn into a strip center. Yes it is worth it. Ordering the fresh hot glazed is the best choice you’ll make this week. Somehow when they are hot, it is easy to eat 6+ in one sitting but once cooled they are much more filling. Best fresh donut since before my existence! BUT ONLY THE ELLA LOCATION IN HOUSTON. No other is like this one! Kroger nearby has a coupon on the back of the receipts. Hope you get to experience it!

Google
Good donuts, and always hot. Cool to see the first shipley.

J L.

Yelp
Wayyyyyy better than any Shipley's I ever been to. They put alot of glaze on the hot donuts. Perfect.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
This is the best Shipley's. It is pretty much the only one I visit unless an emergency donut situation arises. The glazed donuts come out hot, the hours are good, and an order of donut holes gets you a full bag not just a dozen. I normally go through the drive thru, the staff who take your order sometimes come out to the car to speed up the process. The inside is just large enough for picking up orders, most of the space is reserve for donut making. They're open late and you can even get kolaches at all hours of the day.

Wyatt M.

Yelp
They did not give me the right order and did not ask what I ordered to make sure it was correct and charged me for some outrageously big order I didn't even ask for. Learn to speak English and give the right orders.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Sometimes you just have to get some donuts and coffee in the morning and you can't beat the Shipley's original glazed and jalapeño sausage kolaches. The drive thru is kind of long, but it's definitely worth it. Be patient and you will get to enjoy the best donuts in town! I also enjoy the cream filled donuts too, but you have to be careful now because it can get addicting
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
Glazed doughnuts too hot to hold. Amazing! Good old-fashioned southern yeasty doughnuts. They have delicious kolaches and other doughnuts as well but, when they are hot there is nothing better than a plain Shipley glazed doughnut. Not sure If this is the original location but it is old. The drive-thru line backs up onto the street so we parked next door and went inside. Totally worth it.
google avatar

Dee L.

Yelp
I visited this donut spot while visiting Houston, and the drive-thru line was all the way out to the street. The server recommended that I go inside and order since this was my first visit. I ordered the glaze donuts, and these were some of the best donuts I'd ever tasted in my life. The glaze donuts were so fresh, and they melt in your mouth. The cake donuts were also amazing. The service was good and fast. I can't wait to visit again, because I will be visiting this donut shop again.
google avatar

LaMecia M.

Yelp
Hands down the BEST Shipley in town. This is the one place you can go any day of the week and can get hot fresh donuts any time of the day. The staff is nice and efficient-especially when the drive-thru line is extended down the street (let me tell you-it's worth the wait). Also this is my favorite location because they sell donut holes by the bag-not the dozen so you'll likely have two dozen for just under $2. Buying for a lot of people? Check the local Leader newspaper for a coupon for some free donuts with purchase-I think they still do it. I think my car just automatically self-directs itself here whenever I am on this side of town. My family has been going here for over 25 years and it is still our favorite.
google avatar

Jeepers C.

Yelp
Good hot donuts and has anyone noticed the hot service this one always has? It all explains why there's more cars wrapped around it than a Chick Fil-A
google avatar

Claudine L.

Yelp
This is one of the best Shipley's! It's not a new fancy building just good quality Shipley's taste. They are always fresh hot and sugar dripping! The ladies that take your order are always pleasant as well. The line can be quite long during peak hours so just keep in mind that you might be in the drive through waiting from the street.
google avatar

Cyrus G.

Yelp
Best donuts in town no contest always great service the location is a classic and the donuts are perfect and fresh every time

Yelp
Best Do-Nuts in town. No matter when you come the do-nuts are always hot. Each time my daughter comes to town she wants to stop here. You can come all day and each time you come the do-nuts are hot. Ten stars. :
google avatar

Rex C.

Yelp
Five star alert. I have been going to this location for probably about 25 years. I'm actually quite shocked that I'm barely giving them an interview. Not an interview a review. I'm using voice text so excuse any errors. This is a must try five star. This Shipleys is probably the best one in Houston. I mean it doesn't get much better than this when it comes to Shipley donuts. Food: I am not sure but I'm willing to bet every single donut the cell is made fresh. At least I can say that for glaze. Whatever I get a glaze donut there a piping hot like they just pulled them out of the grease put them in a bag and oh my God it's simply amazing. I'm telling you right now if you were a fan of donuts, you have to stop at this location. There is not another Shipleys donut like this in town. I'm not sure if the owners simply go out of their way or what but man they are doing a great job at this location. Like I'm telling you right now the donuts come out fresh every single time. This is a very special place in Houston for donuts. If you're not from the Houston area I'm telling you right now do not pass up this opportunity. You'll probably never try another donut like this. They are an exceptional location out of all the Chipley's in Houston Texas that I've been to. They are so good I will probably go tomorrow. The best in Houston Texas five star well deserved. Well deserved

Yelp
As I said before, I've been coming here since I was a kid, 20 years ago, as I grew up in the area. However, quality has gone down tremendously in the last 2 years. It's still better than other Shipley locations, but, they are no longer going to be the bar soon. I'm starting to prefer Hugs & Donuts down the street. They must've gotten a new cook/baker. The ham & cheese kolaches have been consistently dried out /very brown on the top -- no longer the dough-y deliciousness I once enjoyed. The donuts are still hot and fresh, however, they are being cooked too long and are dried out/very brown on top. The glaze doesn't help & it no longer coats the donut -- it just dries up quickly. The donut holes have all sorts of unidentifiable blemishes on them -- like they were rolled in pepper. They used to be lightly colored, fluffy, and beautiful. Now they look like rocks. The milk and orange juice options are sad -- doesn't taste good. They need to offer more milk choices & the orange juice is just nasty -- need offer fresher, colder orange juice like McDonalds or El Rey. The exterior of the building needs to be pressure washed and painted. The drive thru window is dirty -- makes one wonder what's going on in the kitchen. The bakery case needs to be cleaned and better protected -- makes one wonder about bugs.

Yelp
Hand down the best Shipleys location in Houston! There is nothing else to say. The best is the best!
google avatar

Juvie C.

Yelp
As you can probably tell from the long drive-thru line on most mornings, hands down, the best Shipley's Do-Nuts I have been to! They seem to continuously be making fresh glazed donuts as the ones we order always come to us hot with the icing melting now matter what time of day we come. Also, their "dozen" donut holes are usually just a bag filled with goodness. We went to a different Shipley's once and literally only got 12 donut holes (boo!). One star demotion because sometimes some of the staff are not wearing their masks properly.
google avatar

Hillary E.

Yelp
After passing this location on multiple occasions and always encountering a long line of cars waiting on Ella, I finally decided to see what all the fuss was about. Like other reviewers, I felt the quality of this location was a step above all other Shipleys! Hot, fresh, and delicious -- I tried the traditional glazed donut, a blueberry glazed, and a (huge!) Apple fritter. When I'm in the donut mood in the future, I can guarantee you I'll pass on other donut shops and head straight to Shipley on Ella!
google avatar

Terri H.

Yelp
I have been coming to this location for about 3 years. The donuts have always been hot and fresh. Today I went and there are new faces however I didn't think that would change anything. I was handed cold glazed donuts. Anyone that comes here knows the donuts are always hot! I asked for fresh donuts and waited and was given a new batch. I could feel the heat from the new batch and was happy and left. I got home and my donuts were under cooked! They didn't even smell like donuts but like dough. I called to discuss my issue and spoke to Lupe who didn't speak English and said a manager was only there in the morning. I told her what happened and she said come by 10 and hung up. Another good location turned bad with customer service, communication and overall quality.
google avatar

Ardara H.

Yelp
Went to the high school across the street in the mid to late 80's S.P. Waltrip and remembered how outstanding those fresh morning pre-school donuts were. My wife didn't believe so it is 2020, we woke up and traveled along the way to West 34th and Ella to try these donuts. Lol look at the photo. They tasted just as I remembered. Sorry competitors these are the best. If you EVER she that red light on. Turn in its direction for something hot and spectacular is coming. Whatever you do, before leaving Houston make this one of your stops. Oh food for thought, the long line will totally be worth the wait :)

Areesh C.

Yelp
Donuts and service is amazing! This is my go-to donut spot ! I've been here about 4 times and every time the donuts have been amazing!

Brianna H.

Yelp
The Shipley Do-Nuts location off Ella is the only good one. If you know you know! The jalapeño Kolache's are so good
google avatar

Adrian L.

Yelp
This place is a national treasure. I know doughnuts, yes I do. Shipley on Ella turns it OUT! If I could invest, I would. That's how much I believe in their doughnut magic. In the meantime, I'm more than happy to continue spending all of the money on their sweet delights. I want to say "let's take Shipley national", but I always fear that would compromise the quality of the brand itself. Not if you have the right team, though. Team Ella forever!!!!
google avatar

Azarria A.

Yelp
THE BEST SHIPLEYS IN HOUSTON. PERIOD. If your complaining about the line you clearly not from Houston cuz it's always a long line has been for years. Donuts are always fresh and hot! I've been to locations that have given me cold donuts, some that warm donuts in the microwave before giving them to you, I've had donuts that taste like old grease all from other Shipleys around Houston. I will drive 30 minutes to this location and wait in line for fresh donuts. All these "new" people moving to the area this ain't no damn chic fil a this is Shipleys that's been around for years ain't no two damn lines its one get it in or don't it's your choice.

A R.

Yelp
BEST LOCATION for fresh donuts (plain glazed)! Even open late for after hour cravings. I usually eat two before I make it home lol
google avatar

Ruth V.

Yelp
It doesn't have a huge variety but if you want a donut then you can try this. There are the normal choices here, old fashioned, glazed and chocolate glazed. Some different shapes but nothing exciting.
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
This is by the worst location of Shipley's in houston. Service has gone down substantially in the morning. Expect low quantities of popular items by 6 am. Drive thru has tanked on speed because management refuses to adapt. This is a small location and drive thru will have cars parked on Ella waiting. Chick Fil A uses technology to speed up drive through experience. Whataburger uses two lanes. McDonald's uses two drive through menus so orders can be placed and processed faster. On average 100K a year is what a franchise owner will make at Shipley's. This place has plenty of money and is in a great location in an industrial park area along with neighborhoods next door. It's clear there is little to NONE reinvestment back into the franchised owned business. This place is rated 4.5 stars but I would imagine a lot of the reviews are fake or from past years. This location is extremely slow and unprepared. This is a real review of this place and the experience to expect. City should step in at some point and require expansion to get cars off of Ella and not cause dangerous environments, hazards, or traffic jams. Food quality is great and never been an issue but the planning, quality, and execution of the services are horrible. If the owner reads this please spend the extra money to get an upgraded technology system that will speed up drive through. It's a few thousand dollars and a retainer fee for a technology company to run the IT for you. Customer experience will be better and not shy people away when they see a snake of cars going from building all the way down to Ella and 34th Street.

Yelp
These Dominican ladies working here are so darn sweet and I'm so glad they didn't give me a hard time when I couldn't decide what I wanted.. so many choices, I settled with the butterfly roll, white iced donut with pecans on top and the cinnamon twist. Although, I rather that the twist was just glazed, but they were out. The cinnamon twist was still tasty, but not as sweet as I would have preferred. My favorite was the butterfly roll; I haven't seen anything like it before. It was definitely a sugar rush that I was craving. It consisted of sugar, lots of sugar, white icing, walnuts, cinnamon, soft bread and sweet yummy goodness. I used to be against Shipley's donuts, but this place has opened doors for me that no other Shipley's in past done for me.. Anywho, the drive-thru line was long and ridiculously long; I wouldn't been the one to wait. Oh and a bonus is they had a microwave in the store, so you can warm up the donuts. So many bonuses here.
google avatar

Brian A.

Yelp
These are the best Shipley Do-nuts in Houston... It's not clear why they are so good, but they are better than any other Shipley's and maybe the best donuts in the area. Maybe the original equipment? Or extra glaze under frosting? Not sure, but you won't be disappointed in the flavor--though you may have to wait in line.
google avatar

Freddie F.

Yelp
Best Donuts ever. And I have eaten ALOT of donuts. And there is no donut even close. We have eaten there for 30 years and no matter how long the line, it has always been worth it.
google avatar

Martha M.

Yelp
The place is lethal to live too close to !!! Piping hot, melt in your mouth donuts from 5am--Midnight 7 days a week . Shipley's has been my favorite glazed donut since childhood.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
I love this Shipley's but their boudain kolaches need more boudain! I bit into mine and it was maybe 10% boudain and 90% bread. The filling was only around the outside. These kolaches aren't cheap and I didn't buy them for the bread!

Love J.

Yelp
Found a long piece of straight hair on my cinnamon roll. It was darn near "baked" onto the donut because it was under the icing. Nasty, unsanitary, and horrible.
google avatar

JT T.

Yelp
I think if you visit Houston, you have to try Shipley, right?!??!! I think I went to the og spot so it was tiny..... but you can see them making fresh donuts. My girlfriend order a couple of blueberry cake donuts and a original glazed donut. The glazed donut was freshly made and it was hot and delicious. The sugary glaze seemed it was still melting. The donut was so light and fluffy.... like a cloud... if a cloud was sugary and warm and delicious. The blueberry cake donut was quite impressive also. Extremely light and flavorful.. not too sweet so you could probably eat like 4 of them without an issue. Overall an awesome place to grab some donuts for an affordable price.
google avatar

C B.

Yelp
They aren't all equal. Shipleys ELLA location Has the hottest freshest glazed doughnuts any time of day! You heard me any time of day. Anytime I'm near I gotta stop. Must buy milk!! Love love love this location!!!!
google avatar

Jenn L.

Yelp
Hands down the best Shipley's Do-Nuts! If you go to Kroger, the back of their receipts will give you a dozen of donut holes for free with a purchase of a dozen donuts. Their donuts are so fluffy and perfect. I like their jalapeño kolaches too. You can't go wrong with these food fixes. However, do not get their boudin Kolache. Maybe because I'm from Louisiana, but the boudin is not good.
google avatar

Krys Q.

Yelp
The best HOT glazed donuts in town!! Always piping hot, always melts in your mouth! Great service, super friendly staff! Totally worth the drive.
google avatar

Rasteen W.

Yelp
When you want a hot fresh fix!!! The original location is always the best choice!!!! Soon as you hit the parking lot you can smell the do-nuts!!! Mmmmmmmmmmhmmmmmmmmmmm!!!! Half a dozen glazed!!!! Yum Yum!!
google avatar

Eddie S.

Yelp
You know what I love about this one compared to any one that probably exists in Houston? When you order a bag of donut holes, your supposed to get a dozen I believe. These people just always seem to fill up the bag no matter how many are in there. This has happened every time (about 20 times) that I've been here. My favorite! Big Con: This one is so popular that if there are more than 3 cars in line, the line will wrap around to the street blocking traffic. Parking lot is crappy and after you drive through in the mornings, the exit is usually blocked off by a delivery truck. Can't complain I mean this place looks like it was build about the same time Jesus wore sandles.
google avatar

Warren C.

Yelp
"I can't believe people are subjecting themselves to Krispy Kreme" I was told that everyone feels the same about this location and i can see why -- Jesus Christ people. Get here and get here fast!
google avatar

Polly K.

Yelp
I have tried this place numerous times in 16 years and always go back to the Queen Donuts on 18th St. Shipleys can't compare to how good they are. I'm a big donut hole fan and Shipleys are heavy, light on glaze and not nearly as tender as the Queen.
google avatar

Kim V.

Yelp
I came here around 11:00 am midweek. Purchased a kolache, 2 donuts. Loved everything. The donuts to me are the best in Houston. No matter what time of day you get here. The glazed donuts seems as if they are freshly cooked. Never have to second guess this place. I will pass by 10 shipleys to get to this one. P.s. The yeast is not dry nor tough.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
I have tried a lot of Shipley's do-nuts in the Houston area, and this one out of all of them is the best. The kolaches and do-nuts are always given to you nice and warm like they were just made. Also donut holes they give you more than a dozen and fill the bag compared to others where they count them and only give you exactly 12. I've been coming here since high school and know when they're not donuts from my favorite Shipley's on Ella.

T. B.

Yelp
Best Shipley's Do-Nuts. Their donuts are always hot at anytime of the day. Been coming to this location for over 20 years
google avatar

Janice S.

Yelp
This place is so great to Waltrip High School. The girl's soccer team will have a fundraiser next Saturday again for the 2nd year in a row. The owner gives all his profits during that time to the team. The band has already had a fundraiser there many times before.
google avatar

MAC i.

Yelp
Came to this Shipley's to treat my nephews since they have never been to a donut shop before. We were being rushed and the employee complained that my nephews were having a tough time deciding. As they are 6&10 years old... the lady spoke Spanish and told these two other customers that "we were taking too long and she doesn't get why we are making the kids choose what donut they like." She didn't know I understood but she should keep that to herself as the store was empty and only one other customer had already ordered. I was disappointed due to this being the boy's first time at a donut shop and they speak Spanish as well even though they don't look like it. Will not be coming here again!

Krista N.

Yelp
Best donuts in town! We always stop by this location! Donuts are always warm any time of the day!
google avatar

Melodee F.

Yelp
I've been coming to this location since I was a teen. However, over the last couple of years the customer service has decreased and become sub par. I want to be clear, I do not expect anything outstanding, just basics like hello and a smile. That doesn't happen. Also, if you request fresh & hot donuts out of the oven of course, (that's the only reason why you come) and if they aren't ready or available they'll make them. But they'll having a major attitude like it's an inconvenience to them even if you ask them kindly and politely. Do you want donuts kinda warm or piping hot? Piping hot. This isn't complicated. Staff needs a major attitude adjustment.
google avatar

Mich E.

Yelp
Saw a few of these on my first trip to TX, driving through from Houston to Galveston. Decided I needed to try it, it has to be good if they have so many of them. I was pleasantly surprised. Extremely fluffy and fresh donut, and only 88 cents for 1!
google avatar

Joseph W.

Yelp
Doors locked out front. That's odd Also sign says something about a lawsuit. First time for drive thru Oh well.
google avatar

Annette W.

Yelp
This is the best Shipley in Houston. Unlike the other locations, this Shipley ALWAYS has hot donuts. I don't care what time of the day you go, you're guaranteed to get hot delicious glazed donuts. Their prices are cheaper than the other Shipley's as well. I love, love, love this location!

Andrew B.

Yelp
Live this place. Only annoying things are; The line; The fact they don't honour the time serviced principle of a bakers dozen (13).
