Shodai Teriyaki Review - Central District - Seattle - The Infatuation

"There’s a lot of teriyaki in this town, and Shodai makes our favorite. Even in transit, the rice stays moist, the protein is piping hot, and the salad is as crisp as a pile of iceberg shreds should be. You can also combine your teriyaki with Chinese dishes like general tso’s chicken or fried rice." - Aimee Rizzo

Google
fast service, super nice owners, affordable and delicious. what more is there to say?

Google
First time ordering. Was very mislead by the high ratings on all the food delivery apps which are all 4.5 stars and higher. Very kind service but the quality of the food was not good. Teriyaki chicken was very dry and the Orange Chicken attempted to cover up the dried out fried chicken with overly sweet sauce. Crab Rangoon wasn't bad but these prices are comparable to Hong Kong Bistro and Purple Dot in the ID which are much higher quality. Spent $60+ after Tip for two entree and two apps, unfortunately just not worth it.

Google
Family-owned local spot! Food comes out insanely fast, the shop aunties are adorable. Spicy chicken teriyaki is delicious (one order enough to feed me and my boyfriend), plenty of sauce, just enough sweetness of the salad dressing, rice was cooked perfectly, will come back again!

Mimi

Google
Classically delicious chicken teriyaki & gyoza! Got the chicken yakisoba as well, pretty great too! The staff is really sweet and kind! Perfect for lunch and or dinner. Definitely will come again!

Google
Have tried Shodai twice via delivery apps and each time has been solid. Items are well packaged, quick service, and tasty food. The options are pretty varied and food well portioned. Would order again.

Google
Love the old school look of this place and the piano inside. The teriyaki comes with a cabbage slaw that's tasty but overdressed (ask for light dressing). Juicy dumplings and good chicken that could use a little more char but tastes nice and fresh.

Google
The people working were very nice. We ordered pick up so quick in and out. Pick up was only 10 min so we were excited it was quick and loved the variety of teriyaki and Chinese. It was very dry chicken, the salad was drowning in dressing so it was soggy, and the teriyaki sauce was dry and grainy like someone added sugar to it to make it sweet..

Google
Wonderful, family owned hole-in-the-wall. You've been sleeping on this place if you keep passing by. We had the Mongolian Beef and egg soup. Mongolian beef is spicy, but most people should be able to handle it. The egg soup is simple and comforting. Please give them a try!

Yelp
When they say very hot they very much mean it. It's like going on an episode of Hot Ones. I've had some of the hottest hot sauces in the world. Their very hot is up there with the hottest. You will be hiccuping. But it did its job and woke me up to complete my shift when I was experiencing mid-day drowsiness. I'll order it next time as regular as I realize this place does not mess around with the word hot, they actually mean it. Well done, I am impressed.

Yelp
First time ordering from here. The tempura combo looked good so I ordered it. For takeout, everything was packed very nicely. I like how the sauce is wedged in the rice so it won't tip over. Very clever. Unfortunately the tempura was just mediocre. The veggies were very dry and batter very thick. After like the 5th piece, my jaw started to hurt from how thick the batter is. I'd be down to try another item menu in the future but the tempura was just okay for me. Oh but I really enjoyed the salad! It was very refreshing and tasty.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with place it's a strong yes- chicken teriyaki with gyoza - chefs kiss and such kind and amazing owners!

Yelp
This place is just ok for teriyaki. It isn't the best, but will get the job done. I've gotten takeout here several times and have never gotten sick and it's always been edible.

Lieolani S.

Yelp
Our first time visiting after a beautiful trip to the Arboretum. I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki and veggie tempura, my husband ordered Chicken and Gyoza. Plus 2 drinks. Great service, delicious helping of food, cold beverages and the environment and potty was clean. Many take out orders coming and going during our stay so the community loves this place. We will come back again!

Yelp
Idk why this shop got low rating huhhhh I'm confused the chicken tastes so good and not gamy at all

Yelp
Some of my favorite teriyaki I've found in the Capitol Hill/central district area. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the people inside take care of you and always deliver a great meal. I really enjoy the option of chicken breast teriyaki here. As others have said the fried rice is excellent too! It's a great quick meal and portions are big. Can easily split, share, or expect some leftovers.

Yelp
Left the restaurant about 10 minutes ago. I called earlier to place an order for pick and got no answer. I get there and there are two workers in the front and no customers. I ordered chicken and gyoza. I get to my appointment before to eat and I didn't get a fork or napkins. I said TOGO. Quite disappointed. Chicken is dry too.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much when you walk past, but this is a great local teriyaki place!!! Awesome!

Jamie R.

Yelp
The Bi Bim Bop which literally translates hot stone pot was $17, not served in a hot stone pot, and the portion was in a bowl that fit in the palm of my hand. The guy at the counter said "well it comes with miso soup" the soup was in a to go sides dish about the size of a fried egg. The rice was not browned at all and barely warm. Also they did not provide enough sauce just one not even full ramiken. This meal could not have been worse. It also gave me diarrhera

Yelp
My go-to for ordering teriyaki off Doordash. Eventually decided its significantly cheaper to just go in. Prices a lot better in person than ordering. (+) good prices when not ordering delivery (+) big portions (+) really big menu (Id like to try the chicken and mushroom next) (+) one of the best teriyaki spots based on the 4-5 spots I've tried in Seattle. (-) Bit of a wait. Front guy is busy taking orders on the phone before getting to me and you can see the row of food they've prepared for the many delivery drivers that come in and out during the wait. That means a bit of a wait as the chefs balance those orders and mine. Good sign for the business though!

Yelp
Doesn't look like much when you walk past, but this is a great local teriyaki place!!! It is relatively inexpensive and good quality food! The family that owns this place is so kind and make you feel like a valued customer (: I got the chicken teriyaki. The chicken isn't overly saucy, but there's just enough teriyaki sauce to mix in with the rice! You get a very good portion size, and there will even be leftovers for the next day! Highly recommend the egg rolls as well! Crispy, crunchy but not oily!! Give this place a try!

Yelp
I had to rate this place finally after my 4th time ordering here. Flavor-wise the chicken teriyaki is ok. It's pretty par for the course, neither wowing you nor turning you off. The chicken being consistently over-cooked like they're creating chicken jerky is where I start to become frustrated. On todays date I had purposely ordered as soon as they opened hoping to get fresh chicken that wasn't sitting too long but sadly , once again.... WAY over cooked. Anyways, umm....salad is ok but drowned in a watery dressing. Fried rice is pretty good. Again, I want to love this place but it always leaves me feeling like they're just cooking half-ass. I likely won't eat here again sadly.

Yelp
A hole in the wall place suggested by my daughter. Ordered beef teriayki and egg drop soup. Teriayki was very good but a pass on the egg drop soup. Big serving with lots of vegetables but the taste was off.

Aaron S.

Yelp
My favorite teriyaki place! Most delicious food and large portions. It seems busy all day long, but service is fast. Recommend ordering ahead for takeout.

Yelp
Tuesday means teriyaki. Presumably, Shodai Teriyaki can satisfy this primordial need, so we hop in the Land Cruiser and head over. Shodai is a small, moderately dingy shop, so all is right with the universe so far. We order, and take a stroll over to Joyce's bistro/deli/bakery around the corner which is a 5-star treat. Food is ready on time when we get back. Chicken katsu and hot and sour soup for me, bibimbap (beef) and kimchi for her, gyoza to share. (Ok all you purists out there, chicken katsu is not teriyaki. Get over it.) The soup could use less salt. A lot less salt. Not sure what the chef (who was hidden behind a curtain much like the Wizard of Oz) was thinking. Maybe they just got caught up watching "Crash Landing on You" and kept pouring from the box; but less salt. There's plenty of spice and the sour does come through, along with a nice selection of vegetables. On to the main course. I did not know that chicken could achieve the consistency of leather, but apparently if you cut it thinly enough and fry it, it does. Nice breading. And the salad dressing! Neon yellow! Tastes like . . . yellow! Fortunately there isn't much salad. Rice was fine. Bibimbap was, to quote the lovely woman sitting across from me, "good". And the kimchi had the appropriate aroma to saturate the rest of the fridge by morning. Perfect. As to the gyoza, not bad. nice wrappers, not overcooked, decent taste and texture, good sauce. Best part of the meal. We'll be back as I feel there is potential for four stars here, but there are so many places to try and Tuesday only comes once a week.

Yelp
Definitely in the bottom tier of Seattle teriyaki. Chicken was overcooked, rice was somehow undercooked. Spicy chicken was syrupy. Sunny Teriyaki has a gochuchang based marinade for their spicy chicken that works much better. Regardless of flavor, I think the most egregious issue was the severely overcooked, dry chicken and the undercooked/crunchy (in a raw way) bits of rice in the middle of the rice scoops.

Yelp
I've eaten here a few times, most recently their bi bim bap. There is a Yelp deal to get the bi bim bap for $6 (usually $10). They were surprisingly grumbly about it, but honored the coupon in the end. The serving was big with lots of veggies, savory/sweet Korean BBQ beef. Other dishes I've tried and liked here include the yakisoba and the chicken teriyaki. The fried rice is unremarkable/ a bad deal.

Guo Rong L.

Yelp
It doesn't look like much outside, but the food is really good, I got the spicy pork teriyaki and was not disappointed. Good sized portions, and service was relatively quick. Will not hesitate to drop by again to get more spicy deliciousness!

Yelp
We have ordered from here twice now and both times the food has been amazing and arrived on time! The first time I did the Gyoza and Chicken Teriyaki with fried rice though I don't think the fried rice was up to our expectation $5.00 is a bit pricey for a scoop Of fried rice! The second time we did it with steamed rice and it was perfect! We will order again from here for sure!

Yelp
The food was okay. Extra large size of portions for 8.90 mostly. Not a cute place; not Cozy, not amenable. It was just a place.

Yelp
Delicious Chinese food and really quick Delivery! - Just one suggestion, if anything you purchase is spicy, don't request it to be spicier. I absolutely love spicy hot, but this was so hot that its taking me a couple days to eat it. -

Yelp
Shodai is everything I want out of a teriyaki place! The food is quick, affordable, and best of all, delicious! The menu is nothing out of the ordinary, everything you'd expect at such a place. What sets Shodai apart is how damn good the food is. They are unpretentious and do what they do extremely well. There's this spicy chicken you can get "extra spicy." Now especially for a pale-skinned round-eye, I have a serious taste for spicy food. The spicier the better. Shodai's extra spicy is almost too much for me. Shodai has attained that mythical balance of insanely spicy and really tasty. It's so delectable that I want to keep going but I'm sweating so much I can't see...I end up eating it in phases. It's my go to dish but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. There are a lot of plastic pretenders out there, trying to cash in on Seattle's techy new look. Shodai is the genuine article and deserves your business!

Yelp
Solid hole in the wall teriyaki joint. Not my favorite, but will definitely be kept on the list of options. I got the chicken and beef teriyaki combo. Sauce is good, meat is cooked decently. My only mild complaint was that the amount of rice was a little lacking--only one small scoop for two big portions of meat. Usually it's the other way around at restaurants since rice is generally the cheapest component, so I was a bit surprised but overall not displeased given how much meat there was.

Yelp
I love this place, I'm a medical assistant and I'm always working even sometimes during lunch so normally order from Postmates. I really like their Yellow dressing. My co worker get Teriyaki or spicy teriyaki. We sometimes go to the location and order.
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
We order spicy chicken teriyaki and gyoza fairly regularly since they're nearby, and are always pretty happy with them (we've tried other dishes but have found our favorites by far). Recently though, which prompted this review, is the fact that they waited to package our order until I arrived. I was slightly irritated at first, but it only added 2 minutes (literally) and the food was SO much fresher. It's the closest I've come to in-person-restaurant-quality food since quarantining.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
We ordered delivery and the food was really good and plentiful. Their teriyaki was delicious and flavorful. And their gyoza was so delicious I would definitely order that.
google avatar

Yelp
Always loved teriyaki and heard Seattle is the epicenter of the dish. Happened to be driving by this place while hungry and grabbed some chicken teriyaki. Flavor was awesome and I got a decent amount of rice and chicken for $11. I guess a lot of these little places are disappearing around Seattle, but if you have a chance you should support to Shodai.

JayeTee R.

Yelp
Very argumentative, rude young man taking order; indifferent and rather racist attitude toward African American customers. He didn't like that I asked about the cooks not wearing masks or face covering over their noses or mouths. He said they didn't have to and to show the law that says they do have to. When I wanted to cancel my order after paying for it he first said it was already made, when I asked how that could be, he then said it was being made, refused to cancel the order, and told me what was they supposed to do since the food was already being made, throw it away? He refused to cancel my payment made with my debit card. This is a very small store-front food establishment, very limited that used to be a moms & pop's neighborhood store called Rhode's in the late 50's, the 60's and 70's. Extremely rude young man!!!
google avatar

Alicia R.

Yelp
The 300 pound woman inside me is very pleased to live a few blocks away from this unassuming establishment, just across the Grocery Outlet, another favorite of mine. I've never actually stood within its walls, but I imagine it's just an average teriyaki place to most. To me, this is sinful pleasure with free delivery over $20. This justifies my desire to gorge myself with two $10 meals AND spares me the arduous 3-block journey midst Seattle's moderate winter to get my food. My deliveries arrive before I can slip into my eating pants and I could never get bored because the menu is extremely varied-- almost questionably so. You can get Korean bi bim bap with a side of chicken nuggets and fries. What? I'm giving this 4 stars because my arteries hate me. Never change, Shodai. Never change.

Yelp
it Was A Monstrosity it was supposed to be Med Rare it Came Well Done it was Only Supposed to have Mayonnaise and it had Some Greasy Yellowy Goop instead, then the lettuce was wilted, it did have pickles and onions as requested but Instead of Tomatoes it Had Ketchup I don't do Ketchup on my Burgers... NASTY AF "My Garbage disposal had Dinner" While dealing with burger issues rest of meal got cold and Nasty reheating didn't help made worse....

Steve T.

Yelp
The Korean honey chicken is great. Worth a try fo sho.

Kaylee D.

Yelp
I had the chicken yakisoba. Not only was it a huge serving ! It had so much flavor! Seriously some of the best yakisoba I've ever had! I kept telling all my coworkers. I don't really leave reviews but this place deserves it! And I'll be ordering here more often!
google avatar

Dustin C.

Yelp
Too expensive and does not taste fresh. I tried out the large option for $7 more because I was hungry. 5 bites in and I was finished. Ordered something else. Waste of $30.
google avatar

Elke B.

Yelp
*Read below* Ordered for delivery and it came quick! Ordered shrimp fried rice and it was not very flavorful and the orange chicken was very orange-y and not the best. The teriyaki chicken was good. I wish I could give back the orange chicken and just have the teriyaki chicken. Probably not going to order from here again. *Went back and changed this from 2 stars to one because this place FOR SURE uses MSG. I'm pretty sensitive to it and I got pretty sick after eating this food. I try to never waste food but the leftovers are going in the trash. Don't waste your money!**
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
I get takeout from here about twice a month. It's a solid teriyaki restaurant that is no frills and mostly dependable. I took off a star because once in a while the rice is overcooked. I like to get the chicken breast teriyaki and gyoza combo. The gyoza is always great and very crisp. My roommates like the bulgogi beef and the honey spicy chicken and those are solid choices as well. Final advice: skip the tempura, and don't eat in, and you will be happy with your choices!
google avatar

Crystal W.

Yelp
It was alright, Mongolian beef was WAAAY overcooked, scallions and onions were very soggy and mushy. Rice was hard and dry.... We had it delivered and there were some items missing from our order but they made it right and delivered them an hour and a half later. Mistakes happen. However, I probably won't be going thru them again, but it was decent....
google avatar

Yelp
Shodai has dependably yummy teriyaki and good service. It's inexpensive and the service is always friendly. It's also cool that this appears to be a family business. If you're there during a slow time, you may see the cashier doing his homework. They do delivery or pick up, and they appreciate their regulars.
google avatar

Ryan J.

Yelp
Food is always great, always want to support local business during this pandemic. It may not look like much on the outside, but it definitely fixes your craving and they hook it up on the serving size. Thanks as always Shodai! :D
google avatar

Dylan C.

Yelp
Thought this would be a safe takeout/delivery bet when I saw the good reviews but no. This was over drenched chicken in gooey sauce. We ordered the general tso, teriyaki chicken, pot stickers and fried rice none of which was quality (everything but the fried rice could hardly be described as edible) Would avoid at all costs if you're looking to get it delivered. Big waste of money.
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
We were visiting Seattle for a medical procedure and were basically confined to the hotel room. Decided to try Shodai Teriyaki due to their free delivery option. I was surprised how fast our food arrived, much sooner than we expected. While on the way down to the lobby to meet the driver, he actually came up to our room! The food was amazing. I love teriyaki and have tried many different restaurants, this has to be one of my favorites. My only sadness is that I live 4 hours away from Seattle and will only be able order next time I'm in town! :) Great food! Excellent quality! Friendly, fast delivery! Great Value! I certainly recommend ordering directly through Yelp for this service. We avoided the high fees from other services.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
Seriously some of the best south of the U District North of the ID and East of Belltown And like the delivery tho it's always wayyyy sooner than you ever expect and it's brilliant! I thought when I went Veg I'd have a problem but the Tofu Teriyaki never lets me down. And that salad with the dressing spot on! Ohhh and it's the most sticky non sticky rice I've ever encountered for teriyaki! Soooo much love and admiration for Shodai!

Shawn M.

Yelp
Honestly, favorite teriyaki in Seattle. By far the worst delivery of any food in Seattle. Drivers refuse to deliver to the door. Sometimes even refuse to get out of the car. Will state that it is a bad neighborhood, no matter the location you are. For double digit delivery fees, it seems a bit ridiculous.
google avatar

Nicholas G.

Yelp
Shodai is the hotness. Fast, Cheap, Friendly. Like any best in breed temple of teriyaki, Shodai will not win any awards for architecture, ambiance or artwork. They do however make some very good food that is reasonably priced! So far I've had the chicken teriyaki with brown rice and the gyozo but according to other reviewers they have some darn fine yakisoba. You can call ahead if you want to order to go or just have your food waiting for you when you arrive. Takes about ten minutes or less to get your food. They also have a piano inside which is somewhere between awesome and endearing... Tickle the ivories whilst waiting for your food. YumYum in TumTum
google avatar

Marianne T.

Yelp
Love the Kimchi fried rice and bulgogi and I especially love the staffs There's a grandmother server who is the sweetest host and she took care of us. As someone who is just in Seattle for vacation, their hospitality were amazing. Gave me a good vibe about this beautiful city. Thank you so much!

Madison V.

Yelp
DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!!! FOOD POISONING! My boyfriend and I tried this place for the first time on Saturday, May 9 at around 9pm. It looks like a hole-in the wall but luckily there was a line of about 5 people waiting outside. I got the chicken breast teriyaki without the salad and my boyfriend got the chicken teriyaki. About an hour and a half after eating we both began throwing up intensely. The throw up lasted into the night and early am and transferred to diarrhea. I am positive that this is what caused the food poisoning as this is the only think we ate the same of that day and we felt totally fine once it was out of our systems. I don't know what they did to the food but something awful because we got horrific food poisoning. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!
google avatar

Jeffrey F.

Yelp
This place served older tasting teriyaki. Did not taste fresh. Small portion of chicken. Double portion of rice? Not sure how that equals out. And for the price, forget about it. They made my food in 1 minute? Odd.
google avatar

Jacqueline I.

Yelp
My boyfriend introduced me to this place a few months ago. Still our go-to teriyaki option in quarantine!

Yelp
Best around right now everything about this little mom and pop shop is 100% authentic and on time you get a lot of bang for your buck here very friendly service and fast delivery this place get two thumbs up from me and my crew
