Tuesday means teriyaki. Presumably, Shodai Teriyaki can satisfy this primordial need, so we hop in the Land Cruiser and head over. Shodai is a small, moderately dingy shop, so all is right with the universe so far. We order, and take a stroll over to Joyce's bistro/deli/bakery around the corner which is a 5-star treat. Food is ready on time when we get back. Chicken katsu and hot and sour soup for me, bibimbap (beef) and kimchi for her, gyoza to share. (Ok all you purists out there, chicken katsu is not teriyaki. Get over it.)
The soup could use less salt. A lot less salt. Not sure what the chef (who was hidden behind a curtain much like the Wizard of Oz) was thinking. Maybe they just got caught up watching "Crash Landing on You" and kept pouring from the box; but less salt. There's plenty of spice and the sour does come through, along with a nice selection of vegetables. On to the main course.
I did not know that chicken could achieve the consistency of leather, but apparently if you cut it thinly enough and fry it, it does. Nice breading. And the salad dressing! Neon yellow! Tastes like . . . yellow! Fortunately there isn't much salad. Rice was fine. Bibimbap was, to quote the lovely woman sitting across from me, "good". And the kimchi had the appropriate aroma to saturate the rest of the fridge by morning. Perfect. As to the gyoza, not bad. nice wrappers, not overcooked, decent taste and texture, good sauce. Best part of the meal.
We'll be back as I feel there is potential for four stars here, but there are so many places to try and Tuesday only comes once a week.
