I have eaten at Shoryu Ramen many times before and always enjoyed their ramen. Therefore, I was intrigued when I found out they were introducing a new breakfast menu exclusively at their Covent Garden location. It was my first time there and I had a great experience.
What is great about the breakfast menu is that it includes dishes influenced by Japanese tradition and others for a more Western taste. There are also savoury and sweet items for you to choose from.
I was looking forward to the things I had not had since leaving Japan. Firstly, I had Ochazuke (お茶漬け) which is a type of Japanese comfort food. It is made from cooked rice soaked with green tea and various toppings added on top. I had salmon and seaweed flakes with mine and the salmon was cooked perfectly.
I then had Mazemen (まぜ麺) which is soupless ramen with raw egg yolk, pork belly and various toppings. Instead of broth or soup, you mix the uncooked ramen noodles with the egg yolk and toppings. This was my favourite, because it was so filling.
Of course, I had to have dessert and I chose the Chicken Kara-age Waffle with fruit and maple syrup. Kara-age and maple syrup may sound like a strange combination, but the contrast between the soy marinated chicken and sweet maple syrup was really nice.
Even the drinks were delicious. I had a strawberry matcha latte and a kinako (roasted soybean) latte. I particularly liked the kinako latte, which is difficult to find in London and had a nutty flavour.
The customer service was also excellent. I was served by Suraj who was polite and professional but also friendly. He checked in with me several times while I was eating, but was never intrusive. I also spoke to the manager and we had an interesting conversation about the new menu and Japanese food in general.
The restaurant itself was very clean and well maintained with plenty of comfortable seating. The interior is influenced by Japanese design without being over the top or tacky.
I definitely recommend the breakfast menu at Shoryu Ramen Covent Garden if you fancy trying Japanese breakfast dishes or just something different with a Japanese influence. You will not be disappointed.
