Shoryu Liverpool Street Review - City - London - The Infatuation

"Shoryu Ramen is one of the most reliable restaurants in London to get a big, comforting bowl of noodles. The standard pork tonkotsu here is very good, and the quality of the noodles and broth is always consistent - however, we can’t vouch for the pork buns and karaage fried chicken, which you can safely skip. Their restaurant at Liverpool Street is good for a quick lunch or a weeknight catch-up with a friend. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch" - David Paw

A great ramen spot with the best pan-seared gyoza I’ve had! Could have gone without the gong when we were getting seated, but the ramen and attentive staff made the experience worth it. My partner got their vegetarian tofu ramen and said it’s the best he’s had in London yet- and we’ve had a lot!

Google
Lovely ramen and donburi! We had donburi (both options on the menu) and a spicy kimchi prawn ramen + katsu curry chicken ramen. The spicy ramen had a nice kick and salty juicy taste. The katsu curry ramen was lovely too, salty nice taste. Noodles were perfectly al dente, not overcooked. 4 instead of 5 stars because: Egg was not marinated, at least not longer than a couple minutes. It should be salty and almost brown but it just tasted like normal egg. However the egg was perfectly cooked with creamy yolk. A bit pricey for the ramen, but we will be back, the service was super good!

As a well-known chain with several locations across the city, Shoryu offers delicious ramen soups, Japanese curry dishes, and a nice selection of authentic Japanese alcoholic beverages. One of the standout features of Shoryu is their extensive menu, which includes a variety of ramen options, ensuring that there is something for everyone. For those who enjoy customizing their ramen, there are plenty of available toppings. If you're looking to start your meal, I highly recommend the fried prawns served with a special sauce. The prawns are crispy and delicious. When it comes to the main course, the Chicken Katsu Curry Ramen is a must-try. The portion size is generous, and you can immediately tell that everything is freshly made. No Japanese ramen evening would be complete without a sweet finish. I opted for the chocolate miso & cookie dough and mango mochi, and both were outstanding. The texture was spot on, providing a delightful contrast to the ramen soup. What adds an extra layer of authenticity is the traditional Japanese drums played whenever a guest enters the restaurant. This little touch creates a welcoming atmosphere and makes the dining experience even more memorable. The staff was friendly and ensuring that orders were delivered swiftly. Whether you're looking for a quick lunch or a nice dinner, Shoryu is a fantastic alternative that offers a true taste of ramen right in the heart of London.

I haven’t been to Shoryu Ramen in a long time (posting this from March 😅) Visited for my sister as she wanted the final fantasy poster + coasters. The set was £24 for a drink, main and dessert. We ordered spicy takoyaki extra on the side, and I’m pretty sure there wasn’t a lot of filling inside and it was small :( Also how was it spicy?? Idk maybe it’s because they added chopped chilli’s on the top? There’s definitely better ramen places to eat at! I feel like shoryu wants to be better but it’s just not it for me. No hate!! It seemed quiet when we visited in the afternoon but the staff was nice enough to give me the whole set of coasters 😅 I cannot describe everything we ordered at this moment bc it was a couple months ago and I forgot but enjoy some pictures.

It’s always a delight to dine at Shoryu. We ordered Spicy Fried Chicken Bun, Chicken Katsu Curry Ramen and Miso Wafu Chicken Ramen this time. The food was packed with bursting flavours. I have also tried their Chicken Katsu Curry, Gyoza and Dracula Tonkotsu which is to die for. I love this place and highly recommend ⭐️🤌🏼

To be honest I love ramen, any type of noodles in broth or by itself its one of my favorite dishes. But in Shoryu Ramen I was so disappointed - starting with the service - it was after 9 pm the waitress was either tired or it wasn’t her day/night. My order came but it wasn’t what I order. I had to wait additional 10-15 minutes. After it arrived it tasted weird. Maybe the cook was also tired.

I had the chicken curry ramen and it was like a warm hug on a cold day. Definitely one of my favorite meals while in London. Quite a bit on the high side at £16 but considering the location, it is what it is. However, I definitely recommend.

Google
The best ramen I've ever had and the closest I would imagine to tasting authentic Japanese ramen without traveling to Japan. The Tonkostu ramen was delicious, the soup was light, yet very flavorful, complimenting the firmness of the noodles that you chose at the start, enhancing the eating experience. It was a bit difficult to find the first time I came here due to its unique location along with the other restaurants surrounded by huge office buildings and in the centre of a shopping centre with different levels, very cozy.

Yelp
Delicious! My first time in London, and from most restaurant reviews I wasn't expecting much from the Japanese cuisine here. And because Im from LA, I'd say Ive had some of the best ramen and have higher standards. This place is really good, completely wowed me and my whole family.

Yelp
Solid ramen place. Can understand why they are listed in the Michelin guide. The thin noodles have a great texture, and the broth is deep. It's a bit pricey for ramen, but you're paying for quality you know will be delivered. They have multiple locations in London, so it's easy to get your authentic ramen fix at shoryu.

Yelp
We enjoyed our ramen, edamame and the seaweed salad as well as the sake flight on a cold night. The staff was friendly and helpful and gave us some recommendations. The place is small but walk ins are welcome.

Yelp
3.5 stars rounded up to 4. My first encounter with tonkatsu ramen! Back in the states, I normally have ramen with pieces of pork belly, but the tonkatsu was a great substitute - tender, plump, and the right balance of fried but non-greasy. The white miso soup did the job of satiating that ramen craving you get when you feel under the weather. The broth was 2 ingredients away from that umami kick, however. Moreover, the BBQ pork buns were on point! The sticky buns are wrapped around sweet and tangy BBQ on a bed of lettuce and offer great textural contrasts.

Yelp
OMG, when their caption says "it's in our bones", they really mean it! Their pork broth is amazing and this is the best ramen you can get. It is a good size as well, so you do not feel short-changed and lacking. For a £1 more, I went for the Kotteri Hakata Tonkotsu ramen, an even richer, thicker, meatier tonkotsu broth, with the double nitamago egg, topped with char siu barbecue pork belly (belly pork is so much nicer), kikurage mushrooms, spring onion, sesame, ginger, and nori seaweed. Really satisfying. For drinks, I tried the Kirin Frozen, which is served in a chilled glass with a -5 degrees frozen whipped top. Very refreshing. They were very busy on a Friday night. We could not get a booking until 9pm and people were still coming in after that and still queuing after we left! There's a great buzz at this branch. The service is efficient and quick, friendly and welcoming too. The staff seems to enjoy what they are doing and this gives off a great atmosphere. No sulky, overstretched and stressed staff here. Only one gripe, prices in the City are slightly dearer than in the West End. Shame on Shoryu, absorb the higher running costs in the City, so prices are the same across all branches in London.

Yelp
Shoryu is a happening ramen spot. It's quite large compared to most but always busy and for good reason. I enjoyed the ramen selection to choose from along with other sides that can easily turn into a huge meal. If you order just the bowl of ramen, it is enough to feed a hungry post-workout person without any extra toppings. I chose their signature Shoryu Ganso dish which had the traditional tonkatsu broth that when compared with my dining partner's thicker version was barely noticeable. Both were tasty! There are also free accoutrements to spice up your dish including grating your own garlic. The service could use some improvement. Although they were extremely busy and we were very patient, it took a long time for them to take our order and then to bring our drinks. They also stuffed up my tea order, having wanted the pearl milk tea I received instead a teapot of jasmine with a side of milk. Not sure if they need more training on their drink menu. However for what it's worth the food and ambiance was excellent! I would visit one of their locations again.

Yelp
Went there twice Loved the fact that they ask you for what firmness you want the noodles to be. Curry ramen was creative and loved the broth and Karaage (Japanese fried chicken) as a topping. Their signature Tonkotsu ramen was also good. But I thought the portion was really small. (Curry ramen was fine, portion wise). You pay London price tho. About $20 USD per bowl..!

Yelp
From Kyoto to Sendai, San Francisco to London and Paris, I've been on a lifelong mission to find the perfect bowl of ramen. I'll admit that I'm a bit of a ramen snob. I've witnessed the massive improvements to the London ramen scene over the past decade and I'd say Shoryu is probably the best in London. My mouth waters every time I think about the rich garlicky tonkotsu broth and noodles cooked to perfection. And you can't serve ramen without also having good gyoza--Shoryu's is spot on. The filling is juicy on the inside and the skin is nice and crisp on the outside. Highly recommend adding to your list of ramen places to try!

Yelp
There are ramen bars aplenty in London right now, and it's hard to tell which is the best. There is, afterall, no clear winner from what I've seen from various reviews and people have wildly different opinions on this! Shoryu is one that crops up quite often, and given that they now have several branches, I came into this one with my brother for a quick dinner while I was in the area. First thing to say - it is not quick AT ALL. The service here is painfully slow! It took over 25 minutes for the waitress to get our order, and the drinks took so long to arrive I considered just walking upto the bar directly and picking it up from there. We ordered a few skewers to start which were plain average. Nothing special, but not terrible either. Given the price I'd probably steer clear, but I think they do a decent deal with skewers and a pint which may appeal to some! But the ramen? Ooooooo the ramen! Rich, almost creamy and with a brilliantly soft boiled egg! I tried the original Shoryu and the Curry Ramen, and the curry ramen wins hands down. It's far more punchy and flavoursome, and packs a real punch. Overall I'd happily come back to Shoryu again, despite the slow service. You can book a table, the ramen is amazing (though not quite the best in London), and they have a brilliant reward card which has a Gold level which I'm seriously considering aiming for! But beware! For the price, the bowls are a little on the smaller side for portions, the skewers aren't really worth ordering, and the service is super slow. But - there aren't many places in the area that can take bookings, and Shoryu is one of them! book book book!

Yelp
Having had an unintentional hiatus from Asian food, it was time to get back in the saddle. When my Senior Chica, Valentina, recommended we try out Shoryu, a Japanese additional to behind Liverpool Street station - I was up for it. Located across central London and the city, Shoryu is from the folk behind Japan Centre. The clue is in the name in terms of what they offer here. Ramen is their speciality, more specifically tonkotsu which is a rich 12-hour pork broth ramen with char siu, barbecue pork belly, nitamago egg, kikurage mushroom, spring onion, sesame and nori seaweed. That said, they do offer variations on this dish with seafood, chicken and veggie. We booked a table and it was lucky we did. Whilst when we arrived, they had no record of the table, our greeter did manage to secure us a table - so full marks for the recovery. The tables of two next to each other on the left hand side as you come in, can be a little bit cramped. Be careful when getting up that you don't knock over cutlery, elbow someone's head or even worse, spread their food across the floor. The staff whiz around the room with confidence and the chefs in the open plan kitchen smile as they cook up their Asian fare. Our waiter came to the table and as an Italian he took an instant liking to Valentina (who is Italian). They chatted away in their lingo, which was great as it gave me time to familiarise myself with the menu. I have not had ramen before. In fact, most of the items on the menu where a little alien to me aside from the sashimi. For dinner we opted to go for some starters and had buns (a first for me). Valentina had the soy marinated chicken karaage and a tiger prawn tempura, I opted for the wagyu beef. When they arrived they were a lot bigger than we thought it would be. A slight fear set in as we had to get through mains. We both like the filling and we liked the buns, however there could have been less of it. Valentina thought it was slightly chewier than she was used to, I had nothing to compare it too. For our main courses, I had the black cod misoyaki which was absolutely gorgeous. Delicately cooked and subtly marinated in soy, this literally melted in my mouth. Talk about foodgasm, this word was invented to describe this dish. I also had a side order of the kaisen enoki butter which was essentially mushroom stir-fried in butter. It was really not much to look at, but a nice light side. Yes, I know we were in a Ramen place, so why didn't we have the Ramen. Hold up, Valentina went for the signature dish and had the Kotteri Hakata Tonkotsu which was a richer, thicker and meatier broth with double nitamago egg. She loved it. I was so impressed watching her tackle this dish, as for what is essentially a soup, you think it won't fill you up. This Ramen brimming with all its goodness, was a force to be reckoned with. I ended my meal with an espresso to try and alleviate the fullness. We left that place very happy and totally bloated (in a good way). Amazing food, huge portions, knowledgeable and efficient service. 5 stars!

Yelp
Well it's a fancy place which put everything in the decoration but nothing in there meals... They are acting like Japanese restaurants but there meals are not real Japanese taste. The dishes were very plain, the karaage chicken tasted like the KFC fried chicken... Well according to friend the ramen were decent so, at least they have a "good" meal I don't recommend this place at all You better go to Japan center which is next by and real Japanese experience

Yelp
I was just feeling the need to eat something comforting and not too heavy. Ramen turned out to be a perfect option. The weather was perfect to sit outside and enjoy the day. It appears it's a thing to put so many extras into the broth it's no longer about the broth. I went with the most traditional option. With Tonkatsu Ramen, it's all about the broth. I really wanted the noodles and broth. In the end, the broth is very good, but not truly excellent. The noodles were very good. The Charsu nice. The egg is well prepared, but it would be nice to be slightly warm instead of almost cold. I don't know anything about the local market and it's expectations of Ramen. In my small market, it would be better than average, but not the best.

Farhana C.

Yelp
Service was good - our waitress was friendly but didn't quite understand what I was saying, which was a shame considering the service charge. I liked that most staff could speak fluent Japanese though. Food was decent quality. I probably won't go back simply because there wasn't much (in terms of ramen) to offer for people who don't eat pork.
google avatar

Yelp
The location Can get very busy and service can lack but food is tasty. Good sized ramen bowls. It is a bit pricey for lunch with appetizer and ramen coming in around 20 quid. They have a few vegan appetizers and a nice vegan ramen. I had the white natural. As it is a lunch hotspot would suggest going for an early or late lunch to ensure a table.
google avatar

Yuen P L.

Yelp
The noodles themselves were nothing short of disappointing for me as they seemed too tough (almost rubbery) and certainly not praise-worthy. The soup/broth on the other hand was flavoursome and worth drinking up. The eggs are nicely cooked such that the egg white is cooked through and yet the yolk is soft but at £2.50 for one that seems unnecessarily pricey.  The presentation of the food is good; simple yet succeeding in looking modern and sleek. There is an open kitchen enclosed in a see-through area at the centre of the restaurant and both chefs and waiters are smartly dressed.   All in all, I feel Shoryu is not really exceptional but a decent enough offering if you happen to fancy some soup ramen and you're in its vicinity.
google avatar

Jocelyn R.

Yelp
Very tasty ramen, cute atmosphere. Since I moved to London, I was in search for some actual quality and authentic Japanese food shops. The ramen here is one of the best I've had, so much better than ramen Wagamama offers, which should not be as popular as it is. The flavor is very rich and the ramen noodles are cooked to a good firmness. The atmosphere is very cute and Japanese themed. Service is mediocre, servers get their job done. I recommend you visit Shoryu if you are a fan of ramen.
google avatar

Koji I.

Yelp
This is truly real Japanese ramen place enough to compete if this go to Tokyo though I am not sure if it already had gone or not. What impressed me was nice soup with deep broth and well balanced noodle. Grilled pork is to be improved though. Bun was nice as well.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
This is a London favorite. Having lived in NYC previously, I've had a lot of very good ramen. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Shoryu is the best of them all. My personal favorite is the karaka tan tan, a spicy broth with tender minced beef. I also recommend the gyoza and buns for appetizers. The gyoza are served directly on a small pan with green onion and ginger on top.
google avatar

Mi Z.

Yelp
The ramen are very good, which makes me come back every time. But somehow, despite the large number of staff around, you are always waiting a long time to get your order or to be served
google avatar

Joy L.

Yelp
I love ramen and finding somewhere good in London is tough. After trying several shops I found this place near my office for a dinner date. I ordered their special ramen, along with a cocktail and salmon sashimi to start. The sashimi was a bit disappointing, too warm. The cocktail was so full of ice that it was finished in a few sips, so really not worth getting. I really enjoyed the ramen, really filling for such a small bowl. But the prices I found were overall way too expensive, though the service was good and having outdoor seating is a nice option for the summer. So not sure if I would come but unless there's a lunch special and I would just stick to the ramen.
google avatar

Richard M.

Yelp
Well I'll review this the next time to see if it's improved but customer service is pretty poor. A half empty restaurant and they won't let me sit down as my full Party of two aren't here... I let them know I can order straight away as I'm in a rush but no, they won't do that. This used to be an ok place to go to, but poor customer service doesn't really cut it.
google avatar

Filip Z.

Yelp
Pretty decent ramen. Its a little bit crowded and loud at lunch time but waiting time was fine. Price could be lower. There's 12.5% service added on top the the bill.
google avatar

Kris H.

Yelp
Hoping ramen will take off in London like it has in the states. I'm the meantime I came across Shoryu which is a chain but it does well for itself. The ramen is so delicious. I've been here multiple times. I recommend the Dracula if you're into garlic but I've also had their house ramen and it was also very good! Highly recommend if you're looking for a rainy day treat.
google avatar

Veronica H.

Yelp
Amazing ramen, it reminded me ov my trip overseas to Japan. The broth is very rich and flavorful. The service was good too. Would highly recomend a visit to my friends.

Yelp
Brilliant as always. I was here a day before the grand opening for their soft launch. It was Friday evening and the queue was definitely an indication that ramen is a popular food item worthy of a new branch taking the total of Shoryu restaurants to 4. After a queue of about an hour, we were seated (quite dramatically) as occurs in most Shoryus apart from the Regent St branch which is a little muted. Cue lots of banging of a drum as people enter/leave, shouts of welcome from the staff and general japanese welcoming and friendly vibes. This venue does have outdoor seating, a first I believe for Shoryu, so this would be nice as we (if we) get a summer this year. But you're here to know about the food and it's exactly the same quality as the other branches. The bowls are slightly different, but nothing dramatic. On the menu I noticed a few new ramen items. A new broth using soy milk and a Piri Piri Tonkotsu which was good, but personally not as hot as the name suggested. Ask for this extra hot if you take spicy food and want a nice kick. The drinks menu was massive. At other Shoryu you get perhaps a page or two for drinks. Here it's an healthy 8 pages! Definitely catering for the local banker crowd whom I noticed on the Friday, do like to knock back their drinks. Expect alcoholic versions of every drink you find on the menu of their other locations :). In all, the location was a little hard to find, and some staff did seem a little green, forgetting orders etc.. but that's generally what a soft launch is for, and I'd expected very few teething troubles the following day. Definitely worth the hour wait.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I'm torn on this, as the Ramen itself was wonderful, but the service was less than desirable. Perhaps it was isolated to our waiter, so I'll not belabor the point.
google avatar

Shadow L.

Yelp
I had low expectations for the Ramen, and honestly they failed even that. It was pretty bad. The Broth had a weird taste to it that wasn't good and had very little favour.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
My quest for the best Tonkotsu Ramen in London is over (I hope). As I am not a fan of Nitamago (marinated boiled egg), Nori and garlic, my only option was Origin Tonkotsu. After a very long wait, it arrived piping hot. It was by far the best Tonkotsu Ramen I had eaten. The stock was not as cloying and had deeper flavour/taste than Kanadaya's. The noodle was cooked to perfection and the starchy water was shaken off properly. This dish definitely deserves a 5 star. The reason I gave a 4 star was the service. The welcome was cheerful, but after we were seated, we did not get a menu for 8 minutes. Then after we ordered, we waited for close to 25 minutes. We sat in front of the open kitchen and observed only 2 chefs making ramens. Hence the long wait. I hope they expand the noodle making area and speed up the service.

Yelp
The new Shoryu Ramen opened in Liverpool Street with a 50% off Ramen over the Bank holiday weekend. I loved this Ramen. White Natural Ramen was full of flavour and creamy. The tofu was also excellent. The broth was not as rich as some Ramens I have tasted so I didin't feel too full afterwards. However the service was a bit slow but it didn't spoil my Ramen experience. Please try this chain. It's well worth it.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
Delicious ramen hidden in a strange business-y sort of mall behind Liverpool Street station. The ramen was rich and flavorful and as good as any I've had...well, maybe not quite as good as Bone Daddies or Momofuku (NY) but very close. Definitely will come back.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Solid ramen. New location and still excellent food. The venue is nice. Happy hour from 3-5pm. They introduced the Kotteri, a thicker broth ramen with two eggs! Winner!
google avatar

Tyler L.

Yelp
Pleased with the ramen here. We started with the yakitori which looked great, and was worth the short wait to get.... the pork belly was especially good. The ramen itself was pretty good, at least on par with other specialist ramen places. The broth was not overwhelmingly rich, which I appreciated, but still pleasingly umami. I don't mind the noodles at all, I thought they had a pleasant amount of bite to them. Wouldn't hesitate to go back for another bowl.
google avatar

M C.

Yelp
My wife and I are vacationing here from the SF Bay Area, USA, home of some of the best ramen I've ever had, better I think than some places in Japan. As such it pains me to write this but this was probably the best bowl of TanTan Ramen I've ever had! The broth was full-bodied with hints of garlic, onion, and pickled ginger throughout. The flavor never weakened at all. We might just have to come back here one day. The black sesame tofu was a sweet and savory surprise too! Unfortunately no US locations yet.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Ok place where to get a ramen. Service is not great but not bad, food s tasty but not exceptional and a little bit pricey given that the place is in a central location. It wouldn't be my first choice for a lunch or dinner in the area but not even the last one.
google avatar

Lukas S.

Yelp
Despite being part of the same chain, the tonkotsu at the Broadgate branch seems to lag that served in Shoryu Soho and Piccadilly. Service took more than 30 minutes during lunch hour, which is 3x longer than I've ever waited for ramen and really not realistic in a financial district. That said, it's still good ramen. Service is friendly.
google avatar

Reuben W.

Yelp
One of my favourite ramen stores. Their customer services here in this store is always good :)
google avatar

Kyu L.

Yelp
I wasn't that hungry when I went but the ramen was good (though the sliced pirk wasn't hit...a little cold actually) and I especially enjoyed the pork belly yakatori. I probably wouldnt get the squid again as it wasn't memorable. Frozen beer concept was a welcome on a warm night. I would definately come back here with 2 weeks left in my visit.
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
Service was slow, they forgot all of our appetizers and seated us next to the bathroom even though we had a reservation. It took forever for them to take our order. The food was good but they brought out our orders at different times so it got cold. Overall, I would not go back to this shoryu, especially because the one by Piccadilly is much more efficient.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
All the staff is pleasant minus the guy with the green hair. If you get him as the waiter, kindly ask for someone else. Doesn't know how to communicate politely or efficiently. Other than that the ramen is great . Any broth is a good choice.

Anthony N.

Yelp
Excellent noodles, rich broth and friendly staff. Prices are still London high but at least the food was high quality.
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
The ramen improved a lot from its early days, in fact I think it can now pretty much stand toe to toe with Bone Daddies and not far off from Kanada Ya. But the side dishes are still very questionable, I had some very average sides last time and this time was no different. And one would question can Shoryu maintain the quality while expanding at such a rapid rate. Finally a massive shout out to the assistant manager on the day, very professional with a very down to earth and heart warming hospitality skill, which is all too rare these days in a chain restaurant, respect.

Marcello S.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and very good ramen. D on't take anything else. Focus on the ramen: it is reasonably priced and very very good. A green tea goes well with it. It might get very busy at peak times
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
second time coming here. This time ramen too salty and price much higher now than that of the Regent St honten.

Yelp
Felt like Ramen and was very lucky! This place came up first as we were pretty much round the corner and we thought give it a try... Was a bit tricky to find as it's located in some random after work-drink-activity mall behind Liverpool St. Station. When we arrived the cooks and waiters almost cheered because we seemed to be the first guest of the evening and welcomed us as well as all the guests after us with two hits on a Japanese drum. The waitress was really friendly and gave us a short crash course to Ramen. The Ramen itself was really nice and came pretty fast too and I really liked the different approaches like garlic, chilly or curry flavours to the traditional Ramen misos. The place got pretty lively but it did not make the impression as if one has to order a table. We paid 64 £ for three Ramen dishes, two siders and drinks which I found was relatively reasonable for a restaurant right in the middle of the bank district of London. Will definitely come again when I'm in London.
