South Philly is all about neighborhoods, and one of the best ways of bringing the community together is to have corner cafes in abundance that provide a warm safe place for people to congregate over excellent java and light comfort food. Whether studying or being contemplative, such atmosphere tends to bring to best out in us. So it is with Shot Tower Coffee.
Sitting on the southeast corner of S. 5th & Christian, the large plate glass windows filter the afternoon light into a mellow golden glow that quickly transforms the small room into a spiritual center whose ambiance is palpable. No wonder people come and hope to stay as long as possible; sometimes on their laptops, and often is simple chats or just meditating as they mindlessly stare out the windows to the street life on the other side of this gossamer screen.
Not to mention that the bean life is also excellent, with friendly service folk who engage so well with customers.
My chai latte was a large glass mug of well designed and prepared tea and milk that had great mellow taste and aroma. Likewise, the vanilla latte was bright with subtle vanilla flavor, and only needed a short shake of brownulated sugar to climb to the proper sweetness. A sucker for lemon bars, theirs was wonderfully tart with crunchy base. Loved it!
Why is it called, "Shot Tower?" Damned if I know, with its double meaning. I'll leave that to the coffee historians. All I know is that I'm glad to have finally stopped in and realized the pleasure of its charismatic grace.
