Shōwa Ramen

Karaage Rice Bowl was good for the price. Although more expensive than other on campus options, the chicken was juicy and cooked perfectly and overall the dish was very balanced. Portion was very good, even for someone who eats a lot. Although it's not the best I've ever had, certainly worthwhile to stop by.

It was a rainy night last night and my fiance and I were craving ramen! We ordered for delivery and we're really impressed with how great the quality was! You just never know with delivery how things may travel. I ordered the spicy me so ramen, we also ordered the fried chicken, gyoza, and the Showa Fries. This is my first time trying this place, but my fiance has had it a few times, although this is his first time ordering for delivery. We are both really impressed, for me it being my first time eating here and for my fiance's first time having it delivered. The quality was unmatched, I was really surprised how tender and crisp the Fried Chicken was, the show of fries were insanely tasty! I can't believe this is my first time trying pork belly on fries. This is a great place for ramen and other tasty treats. I will definitely be a returning customer!

The food is fine. It's a decent option on a campus where most of the decent options are fast food chains. Service was much faster than I expected, which was really nice. However, considering there are so many very good ramen places in San Diego, the ramen was just a little bit disappointing. I wish the noodles were springier and the broth was a little less salty. I also felt the music playing was too loud.

Food is alright, but slightly overpriced. You pay for the convenience, since as a student it’s closer than Ramen Nagi (which outperforms by MILES). Every time I’ve gone it’s been criminally understaffed though. Egregious waits for the food to come out. They could do with hiring more people to not overwork their staff. Atmosphere and seating is mostly nice, and they have a self serve water area.

Upon returning to this spot every month or so and referencing the many other great ramen shops around I am seriously disappointed. The broth is substantially less rich than any I have tried… otherwise ingredients seem good. Broth quality is a deal breaker

Rice are warmth, but dry, and no seasoning , chashu is small….and less….. Last time have black showa ramen….salty…..less amount of chashu(even I ask extra)…..fake Japanese ramen place….not recommended

Broth not rich they use salt to compensate for the lack of flavor from the broth leading to it being way too salty. The noodles are alright but could be much better they only give half an egg two small slices of chasu which aren't that good and charge a lot for anything extra. It's not bad but could be much better for the price. Edit: went a second time and it was much better changing to 4 stars. Broth was still overly salty but was much more rich. Ramen egg and chashu were both good.

Their ramen, especially tonkostu ramen is actually good. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is their portial is small considering their price, and believe or not I don't eat a lot. Prepared for desserts if u r having this as a meal.

The ramen was good. After being through several ramen restaurants in convoy areas that were a let down for me, Shows ramen definitely mets my standard of preference. The fact that this place is isolated in a middle of university and is able to produce this level of quality did surprise me a bit. Overall satisfying flavor, I like how chashu was a bit crispy and flavorful. Another thing many other restaurants screws up is the charred cha shu. This place did it well. Kara-age too. They nailed it. Overall experience was goodez. But here is the problem for me. Is it worth the travel? And my answer is maybe. This place exceeded my expectations for being a on campus eatery. But sorry, it's not an easy access for me. If I lived on campus, I will be coming here frequently but I had to use spin bike to get here and that added to slight a bit of a bummer.

This place is definitely NOT your go to place for ramen. I wouldn't even recommend it if you live on campus because of the high pricing. UCSD is literally 10 min away from Convoy, which is home to some of the best ramen spots in SD. The ramen is ridiculously mid, and I tried both the tonkotsu and black showa ramen on separate occasions which were both recommended by friends (with bad taste). Broth is very salty, and noodles obviously come from a package of some sort. Toppings are fine, but they only give you half an egg which is stingy af. The only reason why I came here before was for the chicken karaage, which they actually did well! It came before with 6 pieces and are crunchy outside with a nice coating and juicy on the inside which was great. Recently however, they decided to reduce the count to 5 for the same $8 price. So damn sad and stingy. I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you are a starving college student. Even then, I would say go somewhere else if you can.

On the campus of UC San Diego, this ramen place offers a limited menu that's decent and satisfying. Because it's catered to students, there isn't much ambiance, and it can get quite busy at lunchtime. The campus offers a number of interesting food offerings, so if visiting UCSD, this is a nice place to grab lunch if you're not in a hurry.

you order from a kiosk, get a number, and then when it's ready your number is called. service wise it's pretty smooth and no frills, if you need anything you go to the counter and ask the food was decent- i got the vegan one and it was pretty tasty. i added an egg (i'm not vegan, just like vegetables lol) to it which made it better. tbh i wanted gyoza but they didn't have it on the ordering kiosk. i tried a friend's fried rice which was actually pretty good. another friend got a ramen with a black soup that looked pretty good but quickly developed a film over the top if left alone for a bit (which is normal for food but just kinda icky to see). we went with a party of like 8 which we managed to squeeze in the back (a lil cozy but we didn't mind). i wouldn't come here for ramen or recommend it considering how much better ramen there is in SD but it's definitely fine if you're on campus and hungry.

Okay food for a college campus. We needed some food quick before a play at La Jolla Playhouse You order at counter and pick up your food. Attractive inside and out but you need to clear off a table yourself to eat. People behind counter do no bussing of tables and the students and customers "sometimes" clean up after themselves. Mostly not. We all had ramen. I ordered spicy miso ramen. I realized later I was missing an egg. Canned corn, noodles were nothing special. My friend had the veggie ramen with the vegan noodles. Those noodles looked softer and more appetizing. I probably wouldn't go back for broth with some chili added, mediocre noodles, some canned corn and one thin slice of pork costing $15.

What a great place to go if you are at the UCSD campus, I must say the Karage is truly special, soo Oishii and huge, the ramen too is really amazing as well, love how you order from a machine and it is a quick turn around come check it out has really great rice and ramen dishes.

I wanted to try this spot out on the UCSD campus and went with some coworkers. The place is owned by the folks from The Taco Stand and recently opened here at UCSD as a push for alumni and locally-+owned businesses. The place has a kiosk ordering system, which I thought was convenient and great for indecisive folks like myself. I liked the general atmosphere of the restaurant, where there's plenty of indoor seating with outlets and USB ports and outdoor seating. I decided to try the Tonkotsu ramen, which is my usual barometer to try new places out. I thought the bowl looked a little sad for $13. I thought the quality of the meat and the texture of the noodles were great but the broth seemed both bland and salty at the same time. For on-campus food, I'd say this is above average from your typical Panda Expresses and dining halls, but I think there's better places to try out

Decent spot on campus near Sixth College if you're in the mood for some ramen and don't want to spend at the dining halls. You order via a kiosk and the interior is pretty cozy! The ramen itself is pretty standard and is solid for campus food.

Nothing special but you cannot expect too high for a ramen restaurant inside UCSD campus. I would recommend Underbelly, which is also on campus, if you want to have some more yummy and special ramen.

Showa Ramen has opened in the new cluster of eateries near the Ridge Walk Academic Complex on the UCSD campus. The ownership group also operates other restaurants in town including The Taco Stand. Seating is available inside the suite and on the front patio adjacent to the main entrance. All of the chairs and tables had a light colored wood grain look to make the ambiance feel bright. Ordering is done through a touch screen located in a kiosk in the center of the room. A bottleneck is created if there is a line waiting to enter an order into the system. It would be prudent to set up a second kiosk, maybe outside on the patio. The menu offered seven appetizers, two salads, three donburis, and six types of ramen. The prices were about average for a ramen shop in SD although they would dent the budget of a college student if he/she ate here regularly. At least this place will allow those on campus to get their ramen fix without having to travel off-site. I picked the Gyoza and Tonkotsu Ramen for my lunch. The former came as five pan-fried, pork and vegetable dumplings with a spicy dipping sauce. The latter was a noodle bowl of light pork broth containing a piece of pork belly, half egg, bamboo shoots, nori, green onions, and sesame seeds. I asked for an extra portion of noodles, however what I received should have been the quantity for a standard serving. Both items were prepared fairly quickly by the kitchen. The flavors were decent but nothing memorable.

Showa Ramen opened recently on UCSD campus. According to their website, they are inspired by the Shōwa era in Japan. "Old school meets new school with the mix of authentic flavor and a clean modern design that emphasizes simplicity and the highest quality ingredients." Shōwa Hospitality is the group behind popular eateries including The Taco Stand and Himitsu Sushi. I tried the following: - Tonkotsu Ramen - Cucumber Sunomono - Gyoza Pretty good for an on-campus eatery and for the price. ENJOY!! #JapaneseLove

Showa Ramen is a pretty good ramen place for being on a college campus. The aesthetic inside the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and it has a nice vibe to it. I prefer my ramen broth light and not too fatty, and Showa Ramen does a good job of making light yet umami ramen. However, if you like fattier broths, then you might not satisfy your ramen craving here. The tonkatsu ramen was perfect for me, but it definitely was not as rich in flavor as other higher-end ramen restaurants. It's a nice ramen place to go for lunch with friends after class or dinner with visiting parents/friends. You might have to wait a bit for ramen as they can get crowded sometimes, but off rush hours have less of a wait. Also, if the weather is nice I recommend the outside seating (:

Decided to finally come here after seeing it opened and all of the UCSD social media were advertising it! I think their ordering method is wow interesting, but I can anticipate lines getting quite long due to only one ordering kiosk. I think the strongest point of this restaurant is its location. Because it is right on campus, it is very easy to schedule meals with my friends there. However, this is where the strengths end. I don't think the taste is particularly great, so if you are a ramen purist, I'm not sure this is the place for you. Taste: 2/5. I think the taste of the food itself is average at best for the price. The noodles feel kind of chewy, there isn't that many toppings, only one piece of meat for the base bowl, and only half an egg. The broth is unmemorable. The Gyoza seems like they fried some frozen gyoza and served it. Maybe I have too high standards comparing to specialty ramen stores on Convoy. Ambience: 5/5. Overall, I think new sixth is great, everything is super new and fun to be around. Everything is definitely very clean, and while the restaurant itself is a bit small, the sunny SD weather allows for some excellent outside seating. Service: 4/5. I think all of the ACTUAL service is great, they call out your name and deliver the food to your tracks. However, I don't believe that having only one kiosk to order is very wise. To get in you have to wait for people to decide what they want since there's no menu available to look at while in the line. It seems pretty odd. BIG shout-out to Mimi, she is very cool!! I think this is a great place to casually eat ramen while chatting with your friends, or to get average ramen to go. The convenience factor makes this place worth it, but if you are looking for ramen to impress you, look elsewhere. 3/5

I want to address that it does get busy here, but the main issue was training. I had to wait 35-40 minutes for my order to be served. I normally head to the terminal, place my order and pay upfront. This was how I was encouraged to order my food. The cashier/server calling orders for pick up informed me that she would call my number, and I asked, "Even if I haven't paid for it yet?" She replied we would call you, so I sat down. I waited 15 minutes and explained that I should pay to get my food. She realized I had been waiting for a while, apologized, and rang me through as best she could, thinking I had already paid for my order. She had to key in my card manually, which was fine. The process takes another 5-7 minutes to figure out. Then I had to wait again for my order. This employee expressed that it was her first day, which is fine, but management should have taken over at some point to streamline the process. Also, I don't think the cashier should have been by herself if she wasn't ready to ring people through. Worst of all, my gyoza was cold by the time I received my food. Hopefully, management can provide support to correct the issue and miscommunication.

Since all the openings of new restaurants in Sixth College, I've been excited to try some. Today, I decided on Showa Ramen and I was not disappointed. After a long day of classes, a bowl of ramen sounded really really good. You order on a screen when you walk on, which is super convenient and quick. I went with the tonkotsu ramen and garlic edamame. Can't go wrong with garlic edamame, and the ramen was pretty good. Definitely hits the spot if you're looking for a ramen place on campus. Service is great, too, they're very attentive and make sure you get all of your order. This was a great start to the newly opened restaurants on campus.

I got food poisoning from this place. Do not recommend, because the noodles weren't even that good. I watched them make the fries too, and they dumped the oil with the fries to serve them instead of taking at least some oil out, so the fries were really oily and gross. It's not worth the money or the wait.

I came in hoping to get ramen but saw noodles thinner than hair and saw not one face truly enjoying the food, so i opted for a chicken Karrage bowl. Unfortunately for me I was still disappointed . Poor ingredients and even worse preparation. The rice was soggier than frosted flakes sitting in milk for an hour. The chicken was full of tendons and was as dry as the dirt outside. Grass has more bite than the green onions they add. The only good part about the meal was the spicy mayo but they give you a teaspoon in a large plastic container- of course u can ask for more but what a waste of plastic and a clear lack or any idea on how their food is eaten- clearly because no one here would eat any of it: by far the worst food on campus

I'm someone who doesn't eat ramen very much because it's just not something that I like all that much, but my friend brought me here and let me just say that it was one of the best ramen bowls I've ever had. I loved how light the broth was and the proportion to the noodles was perfect! The chashu pork was perfectly cooked and for the price of the bowl (about $13), I'd say you're getting a solid meal. It's a really tiny ramen shop where you order on a screen instead of through a person, which I thought was pretty unique. Definitely a place to check out!

Super good for on-campus ramen! Their spicy miso is the best, and definitely the most flavorful out of every other ramen choices. Apparently the chicken is great, but I haven't tried it yet. Would recommend! Yummy yummy in my tummy

I ordered extra noodles AND STILL felt unfulfilled after this dish. The broth was..lackluster. topping choice was decent but its not the best in san diego.

Super yum! The portions for their food is perfect, and since I've got the chance to try all of their ramen, I would say I love all the options they have on their menu. Their quality is pretty consistent throughout the many times I've gone, but I know for some people they've felt that the ramen or rice bowls were pretty oily or heavy. That being said, I would still recommend trying this place, since it's hard to find a nice soup dish around this area. The workers were are super kind and helpful as well, although you don't get the chance to interact with them much since you order through a tablet up front before finding a seat. I'd recommend this place if your looking for a warm and heavy meal in a small and warm atmosphere.

Good find if you are near UCSD or Scripps. It is on campus but there is free parking close by. Also you can order before you show up. Ramen to-go is on the smaller side so I order extra meat, noodles, and egg. So it is about $20 a bowl after all the adds. The karage chicken was okay. Cucumber salad was good.

Kinda salty :') But for campus food, it's not bad. I got the tonkatsu ramen, and I think the egg was my favorite part LOL BUT THERE WAS ONLY HALF :(

Came here after studying with my girlfriend, she got the spicy miso ramen. Was expecting to dish out a fortune here because ramen is usually expensive. However it turned out to be decently priced I believe it was $26, I forgot. I don't have anything much to say, but I was satisfied; if you want ramen around UCSD, just go here to get your fix. I have a low standard for food, so take this review with a grain of salt

Great ramen! Fast service & I love the veggie ramen option (added spicy). Thought it would be bland, but it was very flavorful. My kids loved the tonkatsu ramen.

Would review it, but when you state hours and then close instead, it's hard to sample your food. Not even a note on the door. Won't be getting my business.

Quite the disappointment! Half the toppings that were listed on the menu weren't even included, and they even forgot one that I had paid for. If it was tasty that might be excusable, but it was barely edible. To top it all off they forgot to include my drink and it was a to go order so I didn't realize until I got home. Skip this one!

This is the veggie ramen ($12.00). It's originally vegan but I added egg (+$1.00) and made it spicy (+$0.75). The photo on the self-ordering machines showed the ramen with a piece of corn which was missing. All in all, the broth was tasty and there was enough noodles to fill me up. The thinly sliced beets were crunchy and it's juices added to the vegetable taste of it all. Wish they added more variety of veggies.
