The 26 Best Restaurants In Mumbai - Mumbai - The Infatuation

"Since 1945, Mumbaiites and visitors have been lining up outside Shree Thaker Bhojanalay’s door, sometimes even down the stairs and onto the dusty chaos of Kalbadevi’s streets, and for good reason. Their unlimited Gujarati thalis are revelatory, and the warm, efficient service ensures you never want to leave. No matter how busy it gets (seating is first-come, first-served), the movements in this energetic dining room always seem choreographed. Waiters with four-bowl caddies loaded with vegetable dishes, chutneys, pickles, and platters of farsan, rotis, and rice, walk around and fill (and refill) steel plates and bowls, while urging diners to go for third helpings. More reasons to become a regular: The menu changes daily, and on weekends, the thali includes sweet dishes such as gulab jamun, shrikhand, and fruit custard." - roshni bajaj sanghvi

The 38 Best Restaurants in Mumbai, India | Eater

"No one in Mumbai does a thali better than Shree Thaker Bhojanalay, the crown jewel of Gujarati hospitality in the city. The vegetarian meal features over 20 traditional items carefully arranged on the plate in a very specific order, including some Rajasthani delicacies. In winter, Thaker will serve undhiyu, a painstaking specialty of the city of Surat made overnight. There’s a giant photo wall behind the register, where you can spot culinary legends like David Chang, Mauro Colagreco, and Nigella Lawson, who have all been humbled by the restaurant’s thali. The servers will refill your plate endlessly despite any protests; the meal is over when they say it’s over." - Sumedh Natu

Shree Thaker Bhojnalaya – A Timeless Taste of Authentic Gujarati Thali Shree Thaker Bhojnalaya is one of the most iconic and beloved places to experience authentic Gujarati cuisine. Known for its traditional thali, warm hospitality, and consistent quality, this legendary eatery has earned a special place in the hearts of locals as well as visitors. Dining here feels less like eating at a restaurant and more like being welcomed into a Gujarati household. The moment you enter Shree Thaker Bhojnalaya, you are greeted with simplicity and warmth. The interiors are modest, clean, and functional, reflecting the traditional values of Gujarati culture where food quality and hospitality matter more than luxury décor. The seating arrangement is organized, and despite the heavy rush during peak hours, the staff manages the crowd efficiently. The highlight, without any doubt, is the Gujarati Thali. The thali is a wholesome and balanced meal that represents the true essence of Gujarat’s culinary heritage. It usually includes a variety of rotating dishes such as shaak (vegetable curries), kadhi, dal, rotli or puri, rice, khichdi, farsan, chutneys, pickles, and traditional sweets like shrikhand or mohanthal. Each item is freshly prepared and served hot. One of the most impressive aspects of Shree Thaker Bhojnalaya is the unlimited serving system. The staff continuously serves food with great attentiveness, ensuring that guests never feel rushed or restricted. The flavors are authentic—mildly spiced, well-balanced, and comforting—making the food suitable for all age groups. The use of fresh ingredients and traditional cooking methods is clearly reflected in the taste. Historically, Shree Thaker Bhojnalaya has been serving Gujarati food for decades and is considered a cultural landmark. It has preserved the original style of Gujarati dining, where meals are meant to nourish both the body and the soul. Many regular visitors associate the place with nostalgia, family gatherings, and cultural pride. Cleanliness and hygiene are well maintained throughout the restaurant. Plates, serving areas, and dining spaces are kept tidy, even during peak hours. The staff is polite, disciplined, and well trained, adding to the overall pleasant dining experience. The pricing is reasonable, especially considering the quality, quantity, and authenticity of the food served. It offers excellent value for money and is often recommended as a must-visit place for anyone wanting to experience true Gujarati cuisine. Shree Thaker Bhojnalaya attracts a diverse crowd—families, elderly guests, tourists, and food lovers from across India. Despite the popularity and long waiting times during weekends, the management ensures smooth operations and quick table turnover without compromising service quality. Overall, Shree Thaker Bhojnalaya is not just a restaurant but a celebration of Gujarati tradition, flavors, and hospitality. If you want to experience a soulful Gujarati thali prepared with authenticity and served with warmth, this place is an absolute must-visit. It leaves you with a satisfied heart, a happy stomach, and a deep appreciation for Gujarat’s rich culinary culture.

Food and service were top notch! Loved each and every item served as part of the thali. However, the desserts were my favourite, especially the halwa. The service was fantastic too and the staff kept coming back pretty frequently for refills. The price was very decent, considering the number of items in the thali and the unlimited refills. Finding on-street parking nearby may be challenging!

Had the excellent Vegetarian Gujarati Thali at Shree Thaker Bhojanalay, Dadiseth Agiary Road, Kalbadevi. 'Thaker' should not be confused with 'Thackers' on Marine Drive, near Chowpatty. The Thali is priced at 1000/- per plate, which according to me is on the steep side. Apart from the cost of the Thali, the ambience of the eatery is welcoming and warm. The items in the thali are very well constructed and combined. Shree Thaker also has an Instagram page on which daily menu updates are posted well in advance, enabling patrons to plan their visit accordingly. No specific comments on any food item, just that the Kesar Basundi served to us had extremely large dry dryfruit pieces making it a bit cumbersome to have. Special mention for the different types of Rotis they served, including Jowar and Bajri rotlas and the Bhakhri which was crisp and crumbly. All in all a great experience 👍

1000 Rs. Per person on Sunday is too damn high!! Especially for a single course meal. Definitely not working the price, hype or the wait. Bhagat Tarachand is definitely a better option. Was inexpensive and tastes better imo. Again my review is relative to the price they're charging. For 400-600 this would have been a great experience. But for 1000 Rs per person and the kind of wait doesn't make sense.

We went to iconic restaurant which is well known and established where many celebrities have been there. They serve almost 20-25 varieties and all of them is satvik food. Though it is pricy but it also provide quality food. They give five types of chutneys, three starters ir farsan, six to eight gravies, three to four types of dals, three sweet dishes, four types of bread, three types of rice with chaas and mineral water. Their menu keeps changing every day and filling is unlimited. Something you need to wait as well
