Best Chinese Hot Pot Restaurants in Boston | Eater Boston

"After three years of anticipation, the Sichuan-style hot pot chain Shu DaXia celebrated its first expansion into the United States in spring 2022. The Kenmore Square restaurant has already received praise from its early diners for its intricate decor and diverse food offerings, such as goose intestines and beef aorta. Sichuan-style hot pot is deeply rooted in making less desirable parts of livestock delicious, so don’t miss this opportunity to try offal in various forms." - Valerie Li Stack

Staff members are lively and beyond. Nice variety of food selections. I especially like the beef tongue and the beef that comes with a small pot of milk. Very tender. Recommend this place. One more, they are very thoughtful giving guests bibs to keep us clean 👍🏻

Google
This by far THE BEST hot pot that I've been to period. Stopped by on a whim one chilly rainy night coming from.BU. It hit the spot. The service and staff is fantastic. The food was delicious, more affordable than most other hotpots. The fried rice is addictive. The house made sauces are delicious.the hot complimentary tea served in cast iron kettle is a beautiful fragrant floral aroma, taste and a comforting delight. You can order more on the ipad they give to you and hit "send to kitchen" The waitstaff will come right out w your additional orders. It was only $55 for us two people including a bubble tea,and a side of very delicious fries, and the best part is that we could take all the left overs home! Unlike a lot of other hotpot places. Def plan on coming back again when I'm in the area.

From the moment we sat down, everything was top-notch — the ambiance was lively, the service attentive, and the food? Impeccable. The broth was rich and flavorful, with both spicy and mild options to satisfy everyone’s taste. The selection of meats, seafood, veggies, and tofu was incredibly fresh and beautifully presented. Highlights for me were the tender slices of fish, the marinated beef, and the crunchy fried bites that paired perfectly with the dipping sauces. Also loved how customizable everything was — tons of sauces, spices, and herbs to mix to your liking. Perfect spot for a cozy, interactive meal with friends or family. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
The soup broth is amazing. Get the spicy and tomato soup. The meat is also very good and fresh. They have very nice ingredients and sauces, you should really try the all you can eat.

Had an amazing experience at Shanda Xia Hot Pot! The broth was incredibly flavorful—especially the spicy side, which had a rich, bold kick without overwhelming the ingredients. Everything was super fresh, from the beautifully marbled beef slices to the crisp corn and handmade noodles. The dipping sauces were customizable and delicious, adding a perfect balance to each bite.

Previously,I gave it full stars because of the free drinks. (Possibly, most 5-star reviews created for this reason 😂). But, as soon as I could change the review, to be honest,I have to say that the experience was terrible (comparing to all other hotpots in Boston ): 1. The prices were too high, and I was forced to top up at least $500 to become a member to settle the price displayed when ordering. 2. The hot pot was not fragrant, only industrial spicy. 3. The meatballs were hard ice balls with ice chips when they were served to table. 4. The beef slices in pic3 were dark in color and lacked meat aroma after cooking, indicating that they were frozen for too long or the original quality was poor. Overall, doesn’t worth the price. Will never go there again. BTW, In my view, it’s not authentic chongqing style hotpot, though there’s lots of decorations inside this restaurant trying to indicate it is. So weird 😑

Food is awesome! Like Mala here. The staffs are very nice, especially the manager. ***Highly recommended for throwing a small birthday party here***

Yelp
Soooooooooooooo good! Come here for the fifth time now! Has the best soup base. Meat is so fresh. Also the strawberry matcha drink is insanely good. A must come hotpot in Boston!

Yelp
Best hotpot in Boston for sure!!! I've been coming here ever since they first opened and the food never let me down.

Yelp
Upon entering, the ambiance envelops you in warmth and excitement. The vibrant décor, reminiscent of traditional Chinese teahouses, sets the stage for an immersive dining experience. The dim lighting adds an intimate touch, perfect for cozy gatherings with friends and family. The restaurant takes pride in sourcing only the finest ingredients, and it shows in every dish. The selection of meats, from succulent beef slices to plump shrimp, is unparalleled. Each bite bursts with flavor, thanks to the carefully crafted broth that simmers with aromatic spices and herbs. Vegetarians will also find a plethora of fresh vegetables and tofu options to enjoy.

Yelp
Great hot pot spot! Easy to order using their iPad service. Friendly and attentive servers. Easy to find with off street parking, right near BU.

Yelp
I went here with 3 friends last night and it was absolutely amazing. We walked in on the later side, around 9:00 pm (they close at 10:30) & we were still sat right away with amazing customer service. Everyone we interacted with on the staff was so nice & helpful. I loved ordering from the iPad as well as the little sauce bar they had set up! Everything was extremely clean as well!! The signature hot is very hot but they left an entire pitcher of ice water with us. I have to say I really loved it here and it was so fun.

Yelp
Came in before its busy time, and I had great time here! I like the broths and, everything looks so fresh. Service was amazing, the moment you enter the restaurant, the whole staffs greeted you in Chinese very loudly and friendly. You get to make your own sauces at the station. Our bill was $320 for 6, not bad for hotpot, since hotpot is pretty pricey nowadays. They offer coat hanging service, so your jackets/coats will not smelled like hotpot once you finish the meal. The staffs are well trained and friendly. They saw my group were trying to take a selfie, so they offered to take one for us. Our table was well taken care of. Will come back!

Yelp
Today was my first time trying Shu Daxia hotpot and it was a great experience! I love hotpot and have tried almost all of the places in Boston. I know that Shu Daxia is newer and I had not heard many things about it but decided to give it a go today. I love going to Chinese hotpot for the extremely spicy Szechuan broth and was happy to hear that that even their mild broth is very spicy. I got the signature spicy broth which you can choose the spice level (extra mild, mild, spicy, extra spicy, and even more spicy for $2 more). I got spicy and it was the perfect amount of spice; a little tingly in your mouth but not painful to eat. The one thing about the broth was it had a hint of lamb flavor (at least to me) which I personally don't love but it wasn't enough to deter me. I ordered the fatty beef, beef ribeye, knife shaved noodles, bok choy, and tofu puff. Both cuts of beef were delicious but I prefer the fatty beef because it had more flavor to me. The bok choy was huge but very fresh. Tofu puff was great but the star of the show was the knife shaved noodles. They were dried when served but once cooked they tasted like they were freshly made. The noodles were amazing texture and I would come back just for the noodles because not many hot pot places have noodles this unique and fresh tasting. On top of the food, the sauce bar (which is an additional $3) is a necessity and had everything I look for in a sauce. I like how their sauce bar had other snacks like orange slices, nuts, some seaweed side dish, dried pea snacks, rice crackers, and the melon candies. You order everything on an iPad which was very easy to use and straightforward. The service was quick and attentive and I overall had a great experience. I have high standards for hotpot and Shu Daxia definitely exceeded my standards. I will for sure be returning!

Yelp
Good place for a group gathering. We called ahead for a table of 12. Good soup base. One can order a split pot with double flavor soup base, 1/2 non-spicy chicken soup and 1/2 signature spicy soup. Boil the meat, seafood, vegetables dishes in the soup and eat! Afterward, one can also drink the yummy soup! Attentive service! They add more soup base, refilled water, and brought more napkins without us asking! Items were brought relatively quick. The place is clean and nicely decorated!

Yelp
Solid hotpot place. They use tablets so you can continuously order and pace yourself as you indulge in the hotpot. They had a wide variety of sauces for the sauce station. The sauces are extra, which they don't tell you beforehand, so be sure to know that before grabbing it!

Yelp
Food options were great! There's been so many new hot pots - loving this scene. Food was fresh and service was good.

Yelp
Very authentic sichuan hot pot...! Will come again for sure. Meats are very fresh and staff is incredibly friendly!

Yelp
Hot pot is my favorite type of food, and I'm on a mission to try all hot pot restaurants in the Boston area. So far, Shu Daxia is my favorite! It's a pretty spacious restaurant and is walk-in only. You can join the waitlist in advance, like we joined the waitlist from yelp's link and ubered over in time. Staff is generally nice. The deco is probably the cutest I've seen, for hot pot. The tables for two are a bit uncomfortable - you don't have much foot space. Food - the mushroom broth (with spicy heat level) is my new go-to broth. Very mushroom-y taste, with enoki & shiitake mushrooms already in the broth. The sichuan was very spicy, but really oily. They generally always are, no matter where you go. Loved the sauce station. And for hot pot ingredients, the signature beef slices that you dip in milk are top notch. The veggie combo is the perfect amount of veggies for 2 people. We also got the fish filets, wide rice noodles and hand cut ramen noodles. They also have a cool soda selection that I plan to try next time (apricot soda??!!). I would give them 5 stars but the foot space was uncomfortable and I was also craving beef tendon which they didn't have on the menu. Pricing was pretty standard, it came to about $45 per person.

Yelp
I came with a group of 8, and when I called ahead to make a reservation the lady was very friendly and helpful for us (I wasn't able to do so online). We got there just around 6pm on a weekday, and while it was definitely filling up, there were still plenty of tables empty. (When we left, though, the place was much busier and there were a handful of parties waiting to be seated.) Ordering is entirely via QR code which has a bit of an allure to it - it's very exciting to continually put in our orders of plates of meats and veggies and hear the "ding!" of the order being received in the back. Overall, a quite good meal - meats were tasty (we really liked the prime ribeye and the fatty beef), and they had a pretty wide selection of fresh vegetables, mushrooms, fishballs, etc. Very satisfied with both the quality and the quantity of all the portions. Word of warning though - the mala broth is *really* spicy. We ordered the lowest level (mild) but still found our mouths burning early on in the meal. It is a bit pricey, especially if you come with a smaller group as I can imagine, but worthwhile in my opinion. I think Boston does not have the most plentiful selection of Chinese hot pot restaurants, so I'm glad that I can count Shu Da Xia as a top choice in the future. Also, they are bigger than the likes of Liuyishou and I don't think I saw a queue form during our meal, which is a big plus in my opinion - it's never a great feeling when I'm craving hotpot to show up to a 2 hour wait time :)

Yucheng J.

Yelp
The butter spicy soup base tastes really good. We ordered medium level spice and it turned out just right (we both grew up in China). The coconut chicken soup was a surprise. The natural sweet flavor of the coconut comes through its clear texture that neutralizes the richness of lamb and beef. Highly recommend kelp seedlings and pork intestines!! Service was nice too, and the place was in general clean. Decor lighting and temperature etc were wonderful. My boyfriend rates it the top 1 authentic Chinese hot pot in the New England area.
google avatar

Alan C.

Yelp
Similar to Liuyishou in Chinatown, very focused on presentation, quality, ambiance and service. When you first enter, they shout a welcome to you as a group. We went on a weeknight so no reservations req'd or anything, they just sat us down. Pros: - Deep seating for the hotpot so it is at table level when put in so you don't have to peek over or strain to reach over pot - Mini vent set right around the hotpot to suck up the smells, it doesn't get everything but still a great idea and at least 50% isn't getting on your clothes - Presentation of each meat dish if phenomenal along with the quality (I recommend the fatty beef to get the gram of dry ice vapors. - Cool cocktails menu Cons: - $3 dollar pp charge for sauce station (although that is probably due to the above average sauce variety you get that otherwise would be complimentary) - Very pricey Parking is street level and very hard since you're right in BU and in front of the Questrom School. On the plus side, green line stops right in front. Overall, more like a special occasion or date night venue.

Yelp
Yummy and lively hotpot spot on BU's campus! The walk from fenway was very short (10min) and easy. Our party of 4 joined the Yelp waitlist when we started walking, and by the time we arrived, our table was ready. I'd imagine the wait is longer if you join the waitlist when you arrive. You order from a tablet like at most other hotpot restaurants and the food came pretty quickly after ordering. We ordered an assortment of meats and vegetables, and considering how much we ordered, the price wasn't too bad. Many dishes were $5-10 and veggies were less than $5. We found that ordering one plate of each was the perfect amount. The soup bases we got were amazing and tasty! Mushroom base wasn't spicy at all, and the classic Szechuan was incredibly spicy, even when we chose mild. Their sauce bar was small but had all the classics and a couple fruits, veggies and snacks. I also enjoyed their beer selection due to the fruity options. Lastly, the restaurant was super busy on this Friday night, full of students. Overall, it was a great pick for the night as I was really satisfied with how much food we got, the delicious soup bases, and the quick service!

Yelp
This is the best hotpot place I've been to. I absolutely loved the food, and the environment was perfect. Will come back next time.

Yelp
Great spot for yummy hot pot. Friendly staff and veey clean and organized. Sauce bar is worth the up charge (unique.

Dannie W.

Yelp
This place smells pretty good. The food in general is good too. We got the pickle cabbage soup and signature sichuan spicy soup. We first ate the meat and seafood in spicy soup to enjoy the spicy and numbing flavor. Then once we got tired of the grease and meat, we ate the vegetables in pickle soup to increase our appetite. They are perfect combination. Service is good. The staff took care of many things without us asking. There are two things that I don't like. Their waitlist time is a joke. The waitlist time is to check in in person. Once we checked in, we still had to wait for a long time. Total wait time is more than 1 hour on Saturday night. But they do have seats for waiting area and we could grab some fruit, snacks and water while we were waiting. Another thing I don't like is the table. It's small and there's no leg room. I couldn't sit straight with my legs facing front when I ate.

Jing Y.

Yelp
The best hotpot in Boston. The service is very good. I also like the vibes here. highly recommended

Yelp
The place is attractive to BU students. It is part of the campus. We've been where twice and are satisfied both times. Can't go wrong. Recommended.

Yalong Z.

Yelp
好吃!it's quiet during the early dinner hours. Service is fast and everyone is nice. Close to the BU campus and green line, makes it convenient. Worth a try when it's not busy.

Yelp
Glad we decided to come to this restaurant, which has been open since this past summer, on a windy and chilly day. Nestled in the Boston University (BU) campus, there's a great atmosphere for the young and the restless and also for the young and the restless at heart. For anyone's birthday, they will shift the music accordingly to a more upbeat pop/rap to suit the lively mood of the party and it'll last for a good few minutes! Our friends had ordered ahead of time for us and got all the soup bases - Signature Sichuan, Tomato, Mushroom and Pickled Cabbage. Would have to say that the Tomato hit the spot coming from the chill outside and the Pickled Cabbage had a flavorful and warming spiciness as well as a comforting sour note that was very complementary. If you like a good spicy kick, definitely try the Signature Marinated Pork Ribs (15 mins to cook) which will hit you in a good way. For everything we ordered, from the prime ribeye, lamb shoulder, pork belly to the daikon, lotus root, veggies, mushrooms, tofu puffs and fish and beef balls, the quality was very good. Next to our seating area was the condiments section where there was a variety of selections of sauces and the standard aromatics, such as garlic, cilantro and scallions. Not only this but on the wall there were Chinese engraved wooden plaques of the condiments which was a very nice touch. For our dessert, it was similar to a brown sugar mochi roll and let me tell you, if I weren't as full as I was at the time, I would've taken many more since it was nicely warm, soft, chewy and not too sweet - just a well balanced dessert. Service was top-notch with our waitress and waiter attentive and professional to our questions and removing empty plates as quickly as they can. As a word of advice: definitely get a reservation ahead of time. This hot pot restaurant is here to stay. Just gotta find the time to dine here. I know I will again and again!

Eileen M.

Yelp
The staff is very accommodating and make sure they tend to you whenever you need it. The iPad makes it very easy to order your food and staff is there to answer any questions you may have.

Yelp
Good hot pot place. Can be pretty crowded. We came at about 5:30 PM on a Saturday night. Our party waited for an hour 40 minutes for a table. The menu had a large selection of hot pot items. It's definitely on a pricier side. It was good but not worth the price. I could have similar quality hot pot for cheaper price elsewhere.

Kevin T.

Yelp
The ambiance is extremely good and the food is really good. Service is impeccable and they are really nice.
google avatar

Rani J.

Yelp
So so good. They have one of the best broths where it is very tasty. Although I do have to say the sichuan broth is VERY spicy. We liked the short ribs and prime ribeye as well as the fried bean curd, lotus, and bok choy and enoki. Love the service here.

Mengqi C.

Yelp
My first time here and so far so good! servers are very friendly, they offered coat check which is super important for a hot pot space We ordered a spicy broth and a tomato broth, both are tasty and added a layer of flavor to the food we ordered. The size of the food dishes are also pretty decent. Location is also a plus for BU students! Will come back for sure.
google avatar

Joey L.

Yelp
Worth the wait! Honestly, It was hard to get the table right now since it's still on the soft opening period! I don't know why people got upset about not be able to get a table and rated them 1 star for that matter! Relax y'all. They've just opened. Understand rather than blaming lol. Give them a call ahead and they will accommodate you as long as they can or at least what was happening to me and my friends as we cAlled to see if there's a slot! Anyway. we Love both spicy Sichuan and tomato broth. The Sichuan is firing spicy and thank to my server which he informed me to order level 1 ( mild) first and apparently we can add on the spicy sauce if we want later. Btw, eventho the service was a bit slow, but we didn't have to wait that long . we enjoyed the foods ! The beef was fresh and tender, i loved the prime rib , crispy pork and also the condiments they gave as appetizer. Also they have great selection of no-alcoholic drinks as well as cocktails and beers, soju and sake which a plus. I found my new favorite hotpot place and def will be a regular customer here lol! Relax and eat good food Yall Service: a-bit slow but attentive 4.5 Food :5 Drink :5 Definitely come back soon
google avatar

Yelp
This place inherits Chinese food plating. Every single dish has fashioned appearance. Plus, the servers are young and energetic. We really enjoyed the atmosphere. The food itself are outstanding since each course had its own feature. In addition, we enjoyed the alcohol drinks more. The cocktails combine Chinese factors with western liquors - signature and delicious. I highly recommend all cocktail drinks. I personally may just come back for the drinks.

Yelp
Very popular Sichuan hotpot near Boston University. We got a table right away around 5pm on a Friday night. (You would need reservation if going in later) Service was great. Lamb was tender and there were many beef options too. Mild level was spicy enough for us. Beverage was totally overpriced. There is a free snack bar for fruits / dressings though. Overall we had a great time.

义平

Yelp
There is a lot of snakes, and the environment is good. There is a lot of spicy level to choice
google avatar

Park G.

Yelp
A very authentic and busy Sichuan hotpot restaurant in the BU area. We tried pretty much all the cuts of meat with a tomato and a medium spicy signature Sichuan soup base. One thing to note for those new to hot pot, the signature soup base is made with beef tallow and tons of chilis/spices. If you are vegetarian, steer clear of that one! Meats and veggies were fresh. We did try the Signature Beef Ribs which comes as large chunks and was suggested to cook around 15 minutes? It was still quite tough after that cook time but was otherwise flavorful. Something else that is not standard across all hot pot places is that they charge for the soup base and the for the sauce bar usage as well. So this does add to the final bill especially if you aren't coming with a big group to split the soup. With a group of 6, we ended up spending $56/person. Not on the affordable end, but a good option to come for an authentic Sichuan style hot pot.

Shuo C.

Yelp
good hot pot............great place to go...........and the service is pretty good!...............................................

Tannielle J.

Yelp
Food is absolutely delicious. Definitely my go to hot pot place. Service is on point and everyone is very friendly!

Yucheng X.

Yelp
As one of the few hotpots in Boston, especially located near Boston University, it's a great place to have dinner here in the cold winter. It's very convenience for me to come after class. The food is fresh and the taste is very good as a traditional Chinese hotpot brand, with Chinese style furnished. And the service is great and friendly. Once I had my birthday here and received warm celebration with birthday cake presenting. However, since there are always many people coming, the waiting area is a little bit small and people often stand in front of the door, appearing to be crowd.

Kai G.

Yelp
the Food was gas pack fr fr ong. Service 10/10 was vv quick and attentive. and prices were decent.

Lisa P.

Yelp
Amazing and authentic. This place is legit. We go out of way to go. Prices are reasonable as well and the sauce bar is worth a trip too!
google avatar

Yuka M.

Yelp
Went to the soft opening after making a reservation. Overall, the food was very good and fresh. We ordered the house Sichuan spicy broth, with the highest spice level, which was quite salty. The beef was very tender and stayed tender after boiling for a while.
google avatar

Tinghong Y.

Yelp
Hotpot-wise this is a good restaurant. Food materials are fresh and clean, ambience is nice.
google avatar

Frank C.

Yelp
Good spicy food, better make a reservation or waiting time is longer than you could ever imagine on weekends.
google avatar

Ivory G.

Yelp
Finally found an authentic Sichuan hotpot restaurant in town! The food here is tasty, definitely worth a try. The host lady told me they take walk-in everyday. My favorite dishes are Warrior's Beef Skewers and Special Chicken Breast Slice. Taste so good with the spicy broth. The portion of the food is also worth its price! Will come back!
google avatar

Daphne G.

Yelp
Beautiful inside and ambience. There are so many soups to choose from compared to a regular AYCE. I recommend the sour! The spicy is really spicy and the chicken broth was really good if you want a standard broth. You get complimentary cherry tomatoes and oranges and the sauce bar has everything you need. There's also so many items that you would find common in a traditional Asian hotpot place, like beef tongue and different seafood. My favorite is still the thinly sliced marbled beef, which was super tasty. The menu is also huge. There were so many drinks to choose from... including alcohol :) I would come here for a nice date or for a birthday for sure!!

Jirapon S.

Yelp
Hidden gems spot best hot pot place in my opinion compared with similar places around boston. This is the 1st location in US. I do really like the signature spicy broth. It's sooo soooo good. But let me tell you this is was super spicy even mild !!! I can notice the Sichuan peppercorns hits different. Like the food, meat even broth it's really good quality. This place is really busy but I'm surprised it's still low reviews. So i want to spread my word to all of you who love hotpot !!! Must try Shu da xia you will never disappointed

Kai L.

Yelp
We went to this new hot pot restaurant three times since it was opened in June. Place was beautifully decorated, very friendly wait staff, managers often check us to see if we needed anything, seats and tables were roomy and comfortable. The food presentation was absolutely amazing, so as the taste and choice of soup bases. We shall keep coming to this place. By the way, meat quality is excellent, other items are freshly prepared too.

Yelp
Walked for half an hour to get there, only to be told that they are reservation only... the thing is, nowhere can you find this information! Not on their website, not on yelp, not on Google map... not anywhere a normal person looks for info of a restaurant. The waitress basically told us off with the rudest tone I've ever encountered. I was really looking forward to this new addition to the Boston hotpot scene, but now I don't think I'll ever go back.

Hello W.

Yelp
Truly one of a kind. Service was top-notch. Ambiance was as authentic and homey a restaurant can get. Food was OMG delish. Sometimes there's a wait around dinner time on weekdays. Trust me. It's worth it. My go-to spot in Boston. Period.

Tonghui L.

Yelp
Nice hotpot place! Food selection is great and service is excellent. The staff here put in 10 times more effort than your average waiter/waitress. Also the spiciness here is real deal, which I love. For those who are not used to spicy food, go easy when you order!
